This is what is the generally accepted spelling. The NYTimes even had that as an answer in their crossword puzzle this past Sunday.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I hesitate to admit that I had a nagging feeling that the correct spelling of ptui/p'tooie/patooie/patooey begins with "pt". (I hesitate because, if Catharine is correct, no one will believe me after-the-fact.)
Catharine--Does the NYTimes use the Oxford as a reference? Does the NYTimes use a consensus of several different references? I don't know but I believe that the NYTimes crossword puzzle uses solid research to prevent hate mail from frustrated crossworders.
The "p'tooie, diminutive of p'too" comment is funny and clever. I had already explored "spittoon" for a connection owing to its own possible onomatopoeic root but I had not considered the diminutive angle (and overlooked a good joke in the process).
Unless someone can trump Catharine's spelling source (or is willing to call her a big fat liar), I'm going with ptui. It fits with my vague memory and belief that the most common spelling is short and begins with "pt".

In Sinclair v. United States,9 a different witness at the congressional hearings refused to provide answers, and was prosecuted for contempt of Congress. The witness had noted that a lawsuit had been commenced between the government and the Mammoth Oil Company, and declared, “I shall reserve any evidence I may be able to give for those courts ... and shall respectfully decline to answer any questions propounded by your committee.” The Supreme Court upheld the witness’s conviction for contempt of Congress. The Court considered and rejected in unequivocal terms the witness’s contention that the pendency of lawsuits provided an excuse for withholding information.

Your citation is interesting in this light: Admiral Poindexter and Ollie North had their convictions overturned due to the prejudice of their cases created by their Senate investigation testimony under immunity.
"A Senate investigation resulted in the conviction of North and Poindexter on charges of obstructing justice and related offenses, though their convictions were later overturned on the ground that testimony given at their trials had been influenced by information they had supplied to Congress under a limited grant of immunity."
This seems to apply as a circumstance similar to the Mammoth Oil case though in reverse.
Channel the public's anger into action.

maybe what the dems need is to be a lot more heavy handed. the neocons were for the last god knows how many years and it hasn't hurt them. pelosi, boxer, reid, clinton, schumer, kennedy all need to stop worrying so much about what the press thinks of them.

dan,
On one side of the political influence balance there is the cash and lobbyists of wealthy citizens and companies.
On the other side is a large group of people gathering together with a common goal.
The cash and lobbyists continue to work for their wealthy masters while the wealthy masters are on the golf course, whereas the large group of people must take a day off from work.
The deck is kinda stacked...

Limitations on
contempt are specifically, that you can deny testimony if in fact Congress is asking you for information regarding pending suits, which is directly supported by overturning Admiral Poindexter and Ollie North's convictions.
That is where the line is.
Findings of contempt for not showing do not approach any such limitation. There is no pending suit regarding conspiracy within the Justice Department. They are investigating whether that is happening. Clearly, in my mind, it has already happened.

Fernando,
The nuances of law and precedence are many, so I don't doubt that I'm missing something important.
The connection that I see is:
Mammoth claimed that it was withholding testimony from the Senate in anticipation of using the unexposed (and untainted) testimony in a courtroom.
North and Poindexter gave testimony to the Senate which was determined to have tainted their trials in a courtroom.
I think?

You wrote: "you can deny testimony if in fact Congress is asking you for information regarding pending suits, which is directly supported by overturning Admiral Poindexter and Ollie North's convictions."
Forgive me if I am remembering this inaccurately (and forgive me for not rereading the entire Iran Contra mess to find the facts).
I think that the charges against North and Poindexter went to trial as a RESULT of the Senate investigation findings. I (kinda, sorta) don't think that their trials were pending when the Senate was investigating Iran Contra.

WASHINGTON, DC.— Political observers say they have observed cherry picked intelligence linked to the slaying of countless Iraqi citizens and close to 3,600 American soldiers during a series of strategic releases and cynical manipulation of public fear and opinion.
Colleagues said Richard Perle, William Kristol, noted idiot Douglas Feith, and other members of the Project for the New American Century had been working on a story about remaking the Middle East. They sold the film rights to the Bush Administration who within 5 years time blew the thus-far over trillion dollar budget and have yet to produce anything but death, destruction, disease and auto-ethnic cleansing. When plague theory ultimately runs it's course, the film reportedly will finance itself with untold reserves lying beneath the sand and corpses.

Cops: Editor's killer confesses Officers say bakery handyman, 19, angered by Bailey's reporting
OAKLAND — A 19-year-old handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery admitted to police Friday night that he ambushed and killed Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, investigators said.
Police said Devaughndre Broussard told them he killed Bailey because he was angry over stories the journalist had written about the bakery, its employees and leaders in the past. Investigators said Broussard was also concerned about stories that he thought Bailey might be working on. Bailey had apparently been working on a story about the group and its finances, authorities said.
Broussard made the admission to Sgts. Derwin Longmire and Lou Cruz.Broussard had been arrested at his home Friday morning in the 1000 block of 59th Street, where police recovered the shotgun that they believe was used to kill Bailey the day before.
Apparently Broussard had found out where Bailey lived and before the killing Friday morning had gone to the newspaper offices to see if he was there. When he found that Bailey had not arrived at work yet, he began driving around in a van looking for him and spotted him in the 200 block of 14th Street, where he confronted him on the street and shot him several times with the shotgun.
Spent shotgun shells found at the scene were matched to the shotgun recovered at Broussard's residence, police said. Broussard had worked at the bakery as a handyman and occasional cook for eight months before leaving in March to find other employment. But when he could not find a job here turned to the bakery about a month ago and was given a post again, police said.
Broussard is currently on probation for a robbery conviction out of San Francisco. He is scheduled booked on suspicion of murder today. Six other people who were arrested in a raid at the bakery Friday morning were still being interviewed lateFriday night, but no one else was expected to be booked on murder charges.
Those arrested included Yusuf Bey IV, the son of the Black Muslim Bakery founders.
Those in custody Friday were arrested for past assaults, gun attacks and a kidnapping. Two others are still being sought by police. Lorna Brown, an Oakland attorney who has represented the Beys in the past, did not return calls for comment.
Bailey, 57, a former Oakland Tribune reporter, was walking to theOakland Post when he was gunned down at 14th and Alice streets about 7:25 a.m.
Walter Riley, an attorney for the Oakland Post, said Bailey had been working on a story about "the financial status of the organization" and the "activities of a number of people who were working in the organization," including possible criminal activity.
Riley said the newspaper was unable to verify key details of the story and decided not to run it, possibly abandoning the article altogether.
Bailey was known for not shirking from any source, said Donna Ayo, a founder of the community group BARONS, or Brave Academic Rise of N'powered Students. Bridges, who knew Bailey for 14 years, said that included the Black Muslims.
"He was forthright and gave (the group) their due when they were doing positive things," she said. "When they started doing negative things, things that harmed the community, he had to notify the community. ... He made a decision."
Ayo knew Bailey's reporting had angered people affiliated with the Black Muslim Bakery.

Keeping The Homophones Straight
Alice,
I don't know that there is a simple way. I always remember that affect is the verb (requiring action) and effect is the result...but that isn't particularly helpful for people who can't remember which one is the verb. I have zero confidence is my ability to correctly spell the various forms of "occur", so I feel your pain.
I know that I happen to use the word effect (properly, I hope) far more often than I use the word affect. I don't know if this is true for most people.

Buddhas must obtain permission before they reincarnate
Times Online
Tibet’s living Buddhas have been banned from reincarnation without permission from China’s atheist leaders. The ban is included in new rules intended to assert Beijing’s authority over Tibet’s restive and deeply Buddhist people.
“The so-called reincarnated living Buddha without government approval is illegal and invalid,” according to the order, which comes into effect on September 1.
The 14-part regulation issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs is aimed at limiting the influence of Tibet’s exiled god-king, the Dalai Lama, and at preventing the re-incarnation of the 72-year-old monk without approval from Beijing.
It is the latest in a series of measures by the Communist authorities to tighten their grip over Tibet. Reincarnate lamas, known as tulkus, often lead religious communities and oversee the training of monks, giving them enormous influence over religious life in the Himalayan region. Anyone outside China is banned from taking part in the process of seeking and recognising a living Buddha, effectively excluding the Dalai Lama, who traditionally can play an important role in giving recognition to candidate reincarnates.

I [Alexander Cockburn] vividly remember Sen. Harold Hughes of Iowa, a great man, being asked on a Sunday show years ago whether he was ready to run for the nomination. He answered, “When I tell you that if as President I was told that the Russians had launched a nuclear strike, and that missiles were speeding towards America, I would order that we not launch nuclear missiles in retaliation, you will understand that I am not a candidate for the presidential nomination.”
In other words Hughes was saying correctly that since he wasn’t a deranged mass murderer he could not possibly qualify as presidential timber.

A man who just died....
A man who just died is delivered to a Kentucky mortuary wearing an expensive, expertly tailored black suit.
Bubba the mortician asks the deceased's wife how she would like the body dressed.
He points out that the man does look very good in the black suit he is already wearing.
The widow however, says that she always thought her husband looked his best in blue, and that she wants him in a blue suit.
She gives Bubba a blank check and says, 'I don't care what it costs, but please have my husband in a blue suit for the viewing.'
The woman returns the next day for the viewing. To her delight she finds her husband dressed in a gorgeous blue suit with a subtle chalk stripe; the suit fits him perfectly.
She says to Bubba, 'Whatever the cost, I'm very satisfied. You did an excellent job and I'm very grateful.
How much did you spend?' To her astonishment, Bubba presents her with the blank check.
'Dere's no charge,' he says.
'No, really, I must pay you for the cost of that exquisite blue suit!' she says.
'Honestly, ma'am, Bubba says, 'it didn't cost me a thing'.
You see, a deceased gentleman of about your husband's size was brought in shortly after you left yesterday, and he was wearing an attractive blue suit.
I asked his missus if she minded him going to his grave wearing a black suit instead, and she said it made no difference as long as he looked nice.'
'So, I just switched the heads.'

More Ammo For Alice's Position
There seems to be a consensus among members of the "legacy media", bloggers and D.C. insiders: The Republicans want to block any legislative progress by the Democrats before they go to their home districts for vacation. The theory is that Democratic politicos will either be able to brag to their constituencies or will be assailed for accomplishing little.
I don't have hard evidence to indicate that this is more often a Republican tactic than a Democratic one. I'm sure that the Democrats have engaged in obstruction on many occasions.
However, the Democrats have been the legislative majority in modern history more often than not. It makes me wonder if the Republicans know more about standing in the way than creating acceptable legislation. Perhaps it has become the Republican M.O. through habit?
Whatever the case, the whole mess is looking like governance for party, not country. If the Republicans are functioning as obstructionists in an effort to make Democrats look bad, all of that patriotic hogwash they spew is pretty empty.
I am certain that individual Republican politicos will claim that they are protecting the country from bad Democratic legislation. It's too bad that the average voter does not understand or does not see party power maneuvering for what it is.
And if the Republicans tend to obstruct when their party is weak, look for plenty more to come. Their party is really, really weak right now. Like a cornered and frightened dog, they will bite anything within reach; even a helping hand.

I'll See Your Invasion and Raise One Nuke
According to Wikipedia, the slogan for Theodore Roosvelt's aggressive foreign policy came from the West African proverb,"Speak softly and carry a big stick, you will go far". Using invasion, nuclear annihilation, etc. as bargaining chips, some of our present-day candidates have been playing a perverse form of poker. Are we to conclude that they are boisterous pacifists or simply desperate for attention?

Bundy's political future seemed secure, when in 1973 he became assistant to Ross Davis, chairman of the Washington State Republican Party. It was a good time in Bundy's life. He had a girlfriend, his old girlfriend was once again in love with him, and his footing in the political arena was strong.

Growing Number Of Newspapers Call For Troop Withdrawal From Iraq »

HuffingtonPost.com | Max Follmer | August 3, 2007 09:58 PM
A growing number of newspapers across the country are calling for the Bush Administration to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
Among them are newspapers from red states, including several (such as the Roanoke Times in Virginia and The Olympian in Washington state) that circulate in areas with large concentrations of military families.
Perhaps the most surprising paper to join the chorus calling for a troop withdrawal is the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, owned by conservative billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife.

Most Top GOP Presidential Candidates Duck Executive Privilege Question

On July 20, the Bush administration took preemptive action designed to mute in advance charges of a cover-up in the likely event that the dispute over present and former White House aides' testimony turns into a head-on collision with Congress.
Top White House officials told the Washington Post that President Bush has the power and would use it to bar the Justice Department from prosecuting contempt of Congress charges against those claiming executive privilege.
This is a highly controversial claim. Mark J. Rozell, of George Mason University, told the Post that Bush's assertion of presidential power "is almost Nixonian in its scope and breadth. . . . It's allowing the executive to define the scope and limits of its own powers."
In an interview with the Huffington Post, Harvard professor of constitutional law Laurence Tribe was highly critical of the Bush administration's invocation of executive privilege. He described it as "promiscuous to the point of being frivolous and dangerous to the survival of the republic," noting that the use of executive privilege to cover up crimes could be an impeachable offence.
But, Tribe said, it is "within the power of the President" to determine whom the Justice Department prosecutes and whom it does not, based on Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution which declares that the president "shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed." This, then, is fodder for debate in the presidential campaign and the Huffington Post surveyed the top Republican contenders to get their views. Only one, Mitt Romney, was willing to take a stand. Matt Rhoades, Romney's communications director, provided a cautious response:
"If Congress' inquiry is related to the advice that senior staff gives to the President, that would be an encroachment into the affairs of the executive branch. There are three co-equal branches of government. It would be wrong for one branch to impede or interfere in the workings of another branch. As Governor, Mitt Romney stood up for the prerogatives of the executive branch, and he will do the same as President."
Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson all ducked the issue.
The Giuliani campaign wrote in an emailed response: "On background....Giuliani campaign had no comment at this time." Brooke Buchanan, press spokeswoman for John McCain: "no comment." Mark Corallo, spokesman for Fred Thompson: "Fred is not a candidate."
The Republicans will debate on Sunday, and the unwillingness of most of them to discuss this matter may prompt further questioning before television cameras. The controversy over executive privilege is currently on a glide path toward a constitutional confrontation between the White House and Congress.
The ranks of those in the Bush administration claiming executive privilege has been growing steadily, and now includes, among others, chief political aide Karl Rove, White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers. <>By leaking in advance its commitment to barring the Justice Department from prosecuting on contempt charges aides claiming executive privilege, the White House is attempting to make such an order less newsworthy and controversial when and if Bush gives it.
Both House and Senate Democratic leaders and committee chairs have indicated they are likely to try find one or more top assistants to Bush in contempt after their refusal to testify and, in some cases, their refusal to appear before Congress.
White House strategists know that even with such preparation, it will be difficult for Bush to win public support for an intervention blocking the normal workings of the legal system - especially after the strong negative reaction to the commutation of Scooter Libby's 30 month sentence on perjury charges. Jack Muse contributed to this story.

Alex on Hillary
Here is what Alexander Cockburn wrote about Hillary Clinton today:
The Politics of Hillary
One of Chicago's top Republican fund-raisers, Terry Duffy, has just announced that he’s endorsing Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for the 2008 election.
He’s the executive chairman of the entity formed by the 2007 merger of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), which respectively were the largest and second largest derivatives exchanges in the U.S.
Duffy says Mrs Clinton “understands the important role that financial markets play in our global economy as well as the economic opportunities and risk management benefits these critical markets create for all."
It’s true that Mrs C knows a bit about “risk management”.
Let’s say you want to turn $1,000 into $100,000 by trading in cattle futures. That’s risky. You might lose a bundle. On the other hand, you might manage your risk prudently by using as your commodities broker a man with close connections to an immensely powerful agribusiness eager to bring financial benefit and hence a feeling of profound gratitude and obligation to Mrs C and her husband Mr C, at that time inhabiting the governor’s mansion in Little Rock, Arkansas. That’s risk management.

Neither Fish Nor Fowl
While claiming Executive Privilege, Both-Side-Of-His-Mouth Bush and people who work with him claim no involvement in a laundry list of dirty dealings. Changeling Cheney has his feet in both the Legislative and Executive Branches, not to mention his sway on the neoconservative Judicial Branch.
Here is your mirror...
Larisa Alexandrovna
Read the below article snip and tell me which country you think this is describing:
"[Blank] has approved a new law allowing the security services to intercept postal, internet and telephone communications. The law also establishes a state-run communications monitoring centre.
Officials say the new law is meant to provide security and prevent crime but critics say it is aimed at stifling opposition [to the President]. [Blank Country] is undergoing an economic crisis with hyper-inflation, fuel and food shortages and high unemployment."
Sounds like the US, does it not? Does the part about "allowing security services to intercept postal, internet, and telephone communications," make you feel safer, since the leadership is claiming it will make the public more secure?
A Mirror for Conservatives:
If you said yes, you feel safer (and you are likely either in need of medical care or are a neo-fascist "Conservative"), congratulations, you are now officially a citizen of Zimbabwe under the dictatorship of dictator Roberto Mugabe:
"Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has approved a new law allowing the security services to intercept postal, internet and telephone communications."
If you are a "Conservative" then pack your bags, because not only will you be "safer" but you will also get the following almost all-American services and programs:
-The right wing dictatorship in control hates gays too.
So you know these folks won't be passing legislation granting marriage rights to same-sex couples. They love the bible, love guns, and hate gays. Sound like heaven yet?
-The right wing dictatorship in control steals elections too:
"Mugabe defeated Tsvangirai by 56.2% to 41.9% amid violence and the prevention of large numbers of citizens in urban areas from voting. The conduct of the elections was widely viewed internationally as having been manipulated."
Sound familiar? Remember all of those African American voters standing in line for up to 11 hours in Ohio? How about those college students who also stood in line for up to 11 hours? Or how about the poor standing in line for hours and hours while their rich and/or white counterparts had a 20 minutes wait? Support that type of election do you? Don't like it when people different from you get access to voting machines? Like the idea better of innocent Americans being listed as felons (Democrats), stopped by police officers ONLY in Democratic areas, not provided with enough machines, and so forth? Well, welcome to Zimbabwe, where the right wing makes sure to never allow the wrong kind of people to vote.
-The right wing dictatorship in control hates freedom of the press too:
" The octogenarian Mugabe, one of world's oldest rulers, was hailed when he came to power as a "liberator" comparable with Nelson Mandela but these days he tolerates no criticism. His regime's "slum clearance" targets opposition strongholds and made 700,000 people homeless in 2005, but he describes it as a public health operation. The 2002 information law introduced strict monitoring of the media and is used to combat supposed foreign subversion. The 2003 ban on the country's most popular newspaper, the Daily News, was described by Mugabe as simply a bureaucratic move."
Sound familiar? Now you can have Fox on every channel and those damn treasonous journalists will be put in their place too.

Another thought I've had lately...
Bush and the religious right were pushing private schools and home schools. But to what end?
Private schools can set the agenda of teaching, and like Hitler did with the young, turned them into another army against the people of Germany by using the young to turn in people who were against Hitler.
Also, there is a similar problem in Pakistan with the madrassas which are run by Islamist extremeists that are teaching the children to hate Americans.
Just another way of turning future generations.

Once Edwards opened up the challenge to her to refuse to take money from lobbyists, Hillary grabbed a shovel and just kept digging. After Edwards had her down Obama hit her, challenging her assertion that lobbyists had no undue influence on policy.
Dodd had a good moment when he called for public financing of elections. Also, during his blogger klatch he implicitly criticized the strategy of the Senate leadership for not forcing the Republicans to filibuster.
Edwards was funny and relaxed and had the crowd but I think Obama made a lot of people more comfortable about him with his willingness to challenge the existing power structure, especially the foreign policy establishment.
Matt Bai as a moderator detracted from the whole event with his penchant for inserting his ego in the debate as if he were hosting The Price is Right, something Anderson Cooper had the class and good sense not to do.

I think that most people have become numb to the surreal religious ironies brought about by the Republicans, the Religious Right, the Neocons, nutbag Muslims and Bush.
They are worse than ironies. They are abject and unmistakable contradictions. I was dumbfounded when I heard Bush use the word crusade in a speech about Muslim terrorists. I am dumbfounded every time another Christian argues for injecting more of his/her religion into government and into our lives, In the same breath he will decry madrassas and tout school prayer. He will decry Muslim burkas and find skin-revealing American clothing sinful. I go slack-jawed by the absurd contradictions in their reasoning.
There is a very fine line between stoning a Muslim adulteress and the fantasies that some of our Christian brethren dream for our society. House approves foreign
House approves foreign wiretap bill By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer
37 minutes ago
The House handed President Bush a victory Saturday, voting to expand the government's abilities to eavesdrop without warrants on foreign suspects whose communications pass through the United States.
The 227-183 vote, which followed the Senate's approval Friday, sends the bill to Bush for his signature. He had urged Congress to approve it, saying Saturday, "Protecting America is our most solemn obligation."
The administration said the measure is needed to speed the National Security Agency's ability to intercept phone calls, e-mails and other communications involving foreign nationals "reasonably believed to be outside the United States." Civil liberties groups and many Democrats said it goes too far, possibly enabling the government to wiretap U.S. residents communicating with overseas parties without adequate oversight from courts or Congress.
The bill updates the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA. It gives the government leeway to intercept, without warrants, communications between foreigners that are routed through equipment in United States, provided that "foreign intelligence information" is at stake. Bush describes the effort as an anti-terrorist program, but the bill is not limited to terror suspects and could have wider applications, some lawmakers said.
The government long has had substantial powers to intercept purely foreign communications that don't touch U.S. soil.
If a U.S. resident becomes the chief target of surveillance, the government would have to obtain a warrant from the special FISA court.
Congressional Democrats won a few concessions in negotiations earlier in the week. New wiretaps must be approved by the director of national intelligence and the attorney general, not just the attorney general. Congress has battled with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on several issues, and some Democrats have accused him of perjury.
The new law also will expire in six months unless Congress renews it. The administration wanted the changes to be permanent.
Many congressional Democrats wanted tighter restrictions on government surveillance, but yielded in the face of Bush's veto threats and the impending August recess.
"This bill would grant the attorney general the ability to wiretap anybody, any place, any time without court review, without any checks and balances," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., during the debate preceding the vote. "I think this unwarranted, unprecedented measure would simply eviscerate the 4th Amendment," which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures.
Republicans disputed her description. "It does nothing to tear up the Constitution," said Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Calif.
If an American's communications are swept up in surveillance of a foreigner, he said, "we go through a process called minimization" and get rid of the records unless there is reason to suspect the American is a threat.

Iraqi power grid nearing
Iraqi power grid nearing collapse By STEVEN R. HURST, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 39 minutes ago
Iraq's power grid is on the brink of collapse because of insurgent sabotage, rising demand, fuel shortages and provinces that are unplugging local power stations from the national grid, officials said Saturday.
Electricity Ministry spokesman Aziz al-Shimari said power generation nationally is only meeting half the demand, and there had been four nationwide blackouts over the past two days. The shortages across the country are the worst since the summer of 2003, shortly after the U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein, he said.
Power supplies in Baghdad have been sporadic all summer and now are down to just a few hours a day, if that. The water supply in the capital has also been severely curtailed by power blackouts and cuts that have affected pumping and filtration stations.
Karbala province south of Baghdad has been without power for three days, causing water mains to go dry in the provincial capital, the Shiite holy city of Karbala.
"We no longer need television documentaries about the Stone Age. We are actually living in it. We are in constant danger because of the filthy water and rotten food we are having," said Hazim Obeid, who sells clothing at a stall in the Karbala market.
Electricity shortages are a perennial problem in Iraq, even though it sits atop one of the world's largest crude oil reserves. The national power grid became decrepit under Saddam Hussein because his regime was under U.N. sanctions after the Gulf War and had trouble buying spare parts or equipment to upgrade the system.
The power problems are only adding to the misery of Iraqis, already suffering from the effects of more than four years of war and sectarian violence. Outages make life almost unbearable in the summer months, when average daily temperatures reach between 110 and 120 degrees.
One of the biggest problems facing the national grid is the move by provinces to disconnect their power plants from the system, reducing the overall amount of electricity being generated for the entire country. Provinces say they have no choice because they are not getting as much electricity in return for what they produce, mainly because the capital requires so much power.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sixty-five Oklahoma bridges will be re-inspected, including three "deck-truss" spans that the federal government has suggested all states examine, an Oklahoma Department of Transportation official said Friday.
A U.S. Department of Transportation report ranks Oklahoma with the highest percentage of structurally deficient bridges in the nation. About 27 percent of Oklahoma's bridges are structurally deficient, the same rating as that given to a bridge that collapsed this week in Minneapolis...

House OKs new oil company taxes By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 1 minute ago
WASHINGTON - Declaring a new direction in energy policy, the House on Saturday approved $16 billion in taxes on oil companies, while providing billions of dollars in tax breaks and incentives for renewable energy and conservation efforts.
Republican opponents said the legislation ignored the need to produce more domestic oil, natural gas and coal. One GOP lawmaker bemoaned "the pure venom ... against the oil and gas industry."
The House passed the tax provisions by a vote of 221-189. Earlier it had approved, 241-172, a companion energy package aimed at boosting energy efficiency and expanding use of biofuels, wind power and other renewable energy sources.
"We are turning to the future," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The two bills, passed at an unusual Saturday session as lawmakers prepared to leave town for their monthlong summer recess, will be merged with legislation passed by the Senate in June.

There aren’t Republican bridges and there aren’t Democratic bridges and there aren’t Republican sewers and Democratic levees. We’re a country that, as a whole, is paying this incredible, deadly price for a brand of American conservatism that hates and demeans government. And that has defined any sort of spending on anything for the common good as something that’s soft-headed and suspect. And it’s a brand of conservatism that goes back to you know, Reagan’s first inaugural where he defined government as the problem, and to Barry Goldwater before him and the Republican party defines as uncritical inheritors of that legacy. And while they may be benefiting from it politically, we’re all paying the price for it in terms of a country that’s just falling apart. It’s a national disgrace.

My Two Cents (Down From Three Last Week)
For what it's worth, Cramer has always (in my opinion) put a lot of blame and responsibility at the doorstep of the Fed. Cramer is a player in the game. He is less likely to blame, oh, I dunno, maybe the fuckwads who created mortgage parameters that serviced unqualified buyers?
They would also be players in the game.
The overarching problem (again, in my miserably unqualified opinion) is the weakened SEC and, in some cases like annuities (an "insurance" item), nearly zero regulation and oversight.
Somebody oughta be watching these rascals and reining them in when they over-excitedly launch new money making schemes and techniques that push the envelope.
The Fed can make a huge difference by lowering rates at times like this. Cramer is absolutely correct. But the Fed shouldn't have to jump in and bail out stupid, risky practices after-the-fact. The SEC should have been on top of this when the bubble was forming.
The calamity of disregard It
The calamity of disregard
It is now chillingly clear: MI6's pre-Iraq warnings were swept aside by an obsessed White House
Richard Norton-Taylor
Saturday August 4, 2007
The Guardian
In the run-up to war, senior British security and intelligence officials as well as diplomats made it clear that they were strongly opposed to the invasion of Iraq - though not clear enough. Why now, why Iraq, they asked; it would merely increase the terrorist threat, as the joint intelligence committee warned ministers less than a month before British troops and bombers joined the US attack on the country. Concern in Whitehall was shared by some perspicacious Americans, including General Tony Zinni, the former head of US central command, which is responsible for operations throughout the Middle East. He called it the wrong war, fought in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
Now comes fresh evidence that senior British officials tried to persuade the Bush administration to keep off Iraq and concentrate on Afghanistan, the real source of terrorist violence inspired by al-Qaida. On the Brink, the newly published memoirs of Tyler Drumheller - the CIA's chief of clandestine operations in Europe until 2005 - tells of a meeting on September 12 2001. The day after al-Qaida's attacks on America, George Tenet, then CIA director, met three British guests - Sir David Manning, then Tony Blair's foreign policy adviser; Richard Dearlove, then head of MI6; and Eliza Manningham-Buller, then head of MI5. "I hope we can all agree that we should concentrate on Afghanistan and not be tempted to launch any attacks on Iraq," Drumheller quotes the leader of the British delegation as telling Tenet.
In a recent article in the New York Review of Books on Tenet's autobiography, At the Center of the Storm, Thomas Powers points out that Tenet names his British guests but omits what was said at the meeting - while Drumheller reports what was said but was prevented by the CIA (which did not want to upset the British) from identifying who said it.
Powers says the appeal not to attack Iraq came from Manning. Drumheller does not dispute that. In his book he says Tenet responded to Manning by saying: "Absolutely, we all agree on that. Some might want to link the issues, but none of us wants to go that route."
A few days later, a group of diplomats and MI6 officers met their American counterparts at a lunch at the British embassy in Washington. Again MI6 expressed concern that the Bush administration had Iraq in its sights. A senior official (Drumheller, obeying instructions, does not identify the official or his nationality) went further, inquiring what the CIA was going to do once the US had "hit the mercury with the hammer in Afghanistan and the al-Qaida cadre has spread all over the world". The official asked: "Aren't you concerned about the potential destabilising effect on Middle Eastern countries?"
Questioned last week about just how far MI6 and other British officials tried to apply pressure on the Americans, Drumheller told the Guardian: "I think the British did everything they could to keep the US focused on Afghanistan. They understood Iraq much better than we did." One of the things they understood was that there was no link between al-Qaida and Saddam, an assertion made against all the evidence by Dick Cheney and his circle.
The worrying, even terrifying, thing about these and other accounts by former CIA officers is the ease with which America's intelligence agency was swept aside by cliques in the White House and the Pentagon intent on war. The CIA's weakness had a knock-on effect on MI6 as both agencies became victims of the blind determination of their respective political masters.

Ford Recalls 3.6 Million Vehicles Over Cruise Control Switch
August 03, 2007: 04:15 PM EST
WASHINGTON (AP)--Ford Motor Co. (F) said Friday it would recall 3.6 million passenger cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to address concerns about a cruise control switch that has led to previous recalls based on reports of fires.
Ford said the recall covered more than a dozen vehicle models built from 1992- 2007. The company said it was responding to concerns from owners about the safety of their cars and questions about the speed control deactivation switch in the vehicles that is powered at all times.
The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker previously had recalled nearly 6 million vehicles beginning in January 2005 because of engine fires linked to the cruise control systems in trucks, SUVs and vans.
"Customers remain concerned about the long-term durability of the speed control system and about the safety of their vehicles," said Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis.
He said the automaker had received "a few reports of fires" in Ford Crown Victoria passenger cars prior to the recall. He did not have a precise number.
The recall involves the following vehicles: 1998-2002 Ford Ranger, 1992-1997 Lincoln Town Car, 1992-1997 Ford Crown Victoria, 1992-1997 Mercury Grand Marquis, 1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII, 1993-1995 Taurus SHO, 1999-2001 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer.
Also covered are the 2001-2002 Ford Explorer Sport, 2001-2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, 1992-1993 E150-350 vans, 1997-2002 E150-350 vans, 1993 Ford F-Series pickups, 1993 Ford Bronco, 1994 Mercury Capri, 2003-2004 Ford F-150 Lightning, and 1995-2002 Ford F53 motor homes.
An additional 177,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Europe are covered by the recall.
Owners will begin receiving recall notices on Aug. 13. Dealers will install a fused wiring harness into the speed control electrical system or replace the deactivation switch.
Owners with questions about the recall can contact Ford at (888) 222-2751.

During Politicized FISA
During Politicized FISA Debate, Nadler Forced To Withdraw ‘Truthful And Accurate Statement’ That Bush Broke The Law
Yesterday, under heavy political pressure from the White House, the Senate approved a bill that provided expansive spying authority for the Bush administration. The White House had earlier rejected a compromise bill that provided powers sought by the Director of National Intelligence, opting instead to play politics with the issue.
Moments ago, the House passed the White House-backed Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) bill by a 227-183 vote.
During the heated House floor debate over the legislation, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said the White House-backed FISA legislation was nothing more than a political ploy:
This bill is what Karl Rove and his political operatives in the White House have decided they need to win elections. That’s not national security. That’s political warfare.
I do not believe we will soon be able to undo this damage. Rights given away are not easily regained. This bill is not needed to protect America from terrorists. The only purpose of this bill is to protect this administration from its own political problems and cynicism, and its own illegal actions it has taken outside the law without any authorization.
In a symbolic move that reflected the efforts by many conservatives to politicize the FISA debate, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) immediately rose and asked that Nadler withdraw his statement that the Bush administration had conducted illegal activities.
After some pause, Nadler said he would withdraw his “truthful and accurate statements” in order to proceed with the floor debate. Issa, unhappy with Nadler’s retraction, said, “He is not withdrawing it if he claims they’re accurate.” Nadler responded, “I’m withdrawing them without any reservation but I retain my opinion.” Watch it:
Issa’s comments reflected the nature of the FISA debate — conservatives were more concerned with providing political cover for the White House than passing legislation that addressed national security concerns.
Nadler’s comments are hardly inaccurate. The current FISA debate was precipitated by the fact that a court had ruled the administration’s spying actions were outside the law. Just this week, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) revealed a secret court ruling that found “a key element of the Bush administration’s wiretapping efforts illegal.”

Giuliani’s former anti-terrorism chief voices stern criticism. Rudy Guiliani’s former emergency management director, Jerome Hauer, blamed the former mayor for “locating the city’s crisis control room in the World Trade Center complex, even though it was a known terrorist target after the 1993 truck bomb attack which killed six people at the site.” Hauer said Giuliani rejected a facility in Brooklyn in favor of because “the mayor himself made clear that the site had to be walking distance from City Hall.” He added, “Rudy would make a terrible president and that is why I am speaking now.”

Right-wing effort to embarrass Murtha fails. The Crypt reports:
House Republicans sought to rebuke Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) Friday night for his actions while presiding over the chamber earlier in the day. […]
Sitting in the chair, Murtha overruled GOP requests for a recorded vote to approve the previous day’s record despite an overwhelming majority of Republicans in the chamber, even though rules dictate the party with the majority can force a vote. […]
Republicans, still fuming over the contested vote, were upset all day that Democratic leaders chose Murtha to preside over the House, given his reputation as a hardball politician who once threatened a Michigan Republican on the House floor.

I may not have made it to
I may not have made it to Chicago this year, but I've learned a few things from the tubes about what the Democratic presidential candidates were up to at YearlyKos:
* Hillary Clinton's defense of accepting contributions from lobbyists was probably the day's most controversial comment. She seemed to get to the right answer, but it took a couple of tries.
* John Edwards was in his element today.
* Barack Obama was excellent in his private off-the-record session -- so much so that he probably shouldn't have been speaking off-the-record.
* When Bill Richardson touted his position on the Balanced Budget Amendment and the line-item veto, it may have been "the first fiscal policy booing on record." (YearlyKos attracts a smart crowd.)
* Clinton learned valuable lessons about healthcare in the early '90s, and the issue will be her highest domestic policy priority if elected.

Enough depressing news
It's been a very long day for me and my fingers are hitting the wrong keys so it's time to say Good Night.
Hope I will be able to sleep. I am so angry with the Dems for that Fisa Act. I did hear that it is only for 6 months, but this admin can do damage in a week.

Intervention
So what is Cramer proposing, that the federales step in and cut rates? If it is left to market forces, if nothing is done, millions will be forced to default?
My agenda
Issa’s comments reflected the nature of the FISA debate — conservatives were more concerned with providing political cover for the White House than passing legislation that addressed national security concerns.
Pressure the Democrats to hang the Republicans on their own petards on this FISAstuff. Illegal. Illegal. Illegal.
Secondly: Infrastructure breakdown due to mismanagement.
What else?
Gotcha!

Clever.
Illegal Policies
Just this week, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) revealed a secret court ruling that found “a key element of the Bush administration’s wiretapping efforts illegal.”
What did the opposition party do to exploit this?
Keeping the powder dry
Nadler did some good politicking: "I withdraw my truthful and accurate statement..."
My hunch is that this battle is not over. Continue pressuring your leaders.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)
During Politicized FISA
Submitted by toniD on Sun, 08/05/2007 - 12:40am
During the heated House floor debate over the legislation, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said the White House-backed FISA legislation was nothing more than a political ploy:
This bill is what Karl Rove and his political operatives in the White House have decided they need to win elections. That’s not national security. That’s political warfare.
*******
I wish Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) was my congressperson! This man knows what the Hell is going on!And,that snippy Repuke congressional Hack standing up a demanding that Rep.Nadler's remarks about Bush's illegal act's be taken out of the record! That makes me want to throw-up!"Patooie!"included!
That's like the second time in aweek some Republican Congressional Hack has stood up to do that!It might not be in the congressional record anymore Asshole. But,Anyone who dosen't have Political Syphilis of the brain knows Damn well those Statements are True, and Should be keeped in the Congressional record.Bullshit in,Bullshit out!Illegality in,Illegality out!To those Repuke congressional hacks damnding that the Congressional record be cleaned of The Truth,I say"Ihope your Children are Proud!"If they only knew Asshole!!
And,to "I withdraw my truthful and accurate statement..."Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)
children. You should be Very Proud of your Father! He is a Very Good Man!
I like Nadler's spirit
Nadler's withdrawal of his "truthful and accurate statement" is in the record. This just gives us more stuff to organize around.
This is like dan rather's report on Bush's National Guard record. True in the popular culture is true enough.

You would not believe this short movie...spectacular imo...it's called Most
http://www.mostthemovie.com/most.html
First we watched one called Return to Me...and it didn't have the certain coincidences or spiritual touch I would have expected from a movie with a heart transplant in it...
But then we watched Most and it had exactly what was missing from the first movie...really powerful - wonderful...
We love...

Federal Jobs Program
I am listening to an Ed Schultz repeat. He is calling for a new FDR (New Deal) jobs program to repair the nation's infrastructure. Got to do more than talk about it to get it done, Ed.
Good idea; old idea.
Israel’s Jewish Problem in Tehran
So why hasn’t Iran started by wiping its own Jews off the map?
...
A few weeks ago, as Israel’s military intelligence claimed — as it has been doing regularly since the early 1990s — that Iran is only a year or so away from the “point of no return” on developing a nuclear warhead, Netanyahu was at it again. “Iran could be the first undeterrable nuclear power,” he warned, adding: “This is a Jewish problem like Hitler was a Jewish problem … The future of the Jewish people depends on the future of Israel.”

Ideal Political system
of govt on it?
I am partial to Parecon. Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel worked it out theoretically. It goes beyond marxisn, libertarian socialism (anarchism), and the other systems. Incorporates feminist principles, anti-racist, and such. Basically, the economy will be in the hands of the people, organized through councils. It is hard to summarize. The dirty jobs needed by the community will be shared. Basic needs will be met. Councils decide much. I want to study it and really nail the understanding of it. But so far...
Prevent Zionist Aggression in Iran
So why hasn’t Iran started by wiping its own Jews off the map?
Because they are Iranians who have lived there for 3000 years.
What is the basis for Israel’s dire forecasts — the ideological scaffolding being erected, presumably, to justify an attack on Iran? Helpfully, as George Bush defended his Iraq policies last month, he reminded us yet again of the menace Iran supposedly poses: it is “threatening to wipe Israel off the map”.
This myth has been endlessly recycled since a translating error was made of a speech Ahmadinejad delivered nearly two years ago. Farsi experts have verified that the Iranian president, far from threatening to destroy Israel, was quoting from an earlier speech by the late Ayatollah Khomeini in which he reassured supporters of the Palestinians that “the Zionist regime in Jerusalem” would “vanish from the page of time”.
He was not threatening to exterminate Jews or even Israel. He was comparing Israel’s occupation of the Palestinians with other illegitimate systems of rule whose time had passed, including the Shahs who once ruled Iran, apartheid South Africa and the Soviet empire. Nonetheless, this erroneous translation has survived and prospered because Israel and her supporters have exploited it for their own crude propaganda purposes.
