Stephen Colbert did a brilliant bit the other night comparing the Dems constant need to believe Bush will compromise to Charlie Brown's belief that Lucy will finally let him kick that football.

This is dispiriting and embarrassing.

McCain uses the F bomb

McCain Drops F-Bomb On Senator When Confronted With Recent Absences »
Busy campaigning for his presidential bid, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has missed over 40 consecutive roll-call votes, going five straight weeks “without casting a vote on the Senate floor.”

Yesterday, after apparently skipping most of the extended closed-door White House/Senate immigration negotiations, McCain “suddenly re-emerged” to take part in the press conference announcing the deal.

This isn’t sitting well with McCain’s colleagues. Tonight, Fox News correspondent Major Garrett reported that “anger burst forth memorably and loudly” when Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) accused McCain of being “too busy running for president.” McCain responded by using “the f-word toward Cornyn,” though it’s not clear “if the f-word was a verb or a gerund.”

Watch it:

Maybe McCain should take his own advice and “lighten up.”

Digg It!

UPDATE: Apparently it wasn’t just the f-word:

At a bipartisan gathering in an ornate meeting room just off the Senate floor, McCain complained that Cornyn was raising petty objections to a compromise plan being worked out between Senate Republicans and Democrats and the White House. He used a curse word associated with chickens and accused Cornyn of raising the issue just to torpedo a deal.

Things got really heated when Cornyn accused McCain of being too busy campaigning for president to take part in the negotiations, which have gone on for months behind closed doors. “Wait a second here,” Cornyn said to McCain. “I’ve been sitting in here for all of these negotiations and you just parachute in here on the last day. You’re out of line.”

McCain, a former Navy pilot, then used language more accustomed to sailors (not to mention the current vice president, who made news a few years back after a verbal encounter with Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont).

“[Expletive] you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room,” shouted McCain at Cornyn.

Ron Paul

Column: Paul's 9/11 theory should be considered RAW STORY
Published: Friday May 18, 2007

Ron Paul's assertion in this week's Republican presidential debate that American foreign policy in the Middle East invited the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 should not be dismissed, lest Americans continue to ignore the lessons of history, a CNN contributor wrote in an opinion piece Friday on the network's Web site.

"As Americans, we believe in forgiving and forgetting, and are terrible at understanding how history affects us today," wrote Roland S. Martin, who also hosts a talk show in Chicago. "We are arrogant in not recognizing that when we benefit, someone else may suffer. That will lead to resentment and anger, and if suppressed, will boil over one day."

After Paul, a Texas congressman, asserted that terrorists attacked the US "because we've been over there" bombing Iraq for a decade, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said he'd never heard such an assertion and pounced on Paul and demanded for a retraction of the statement.

Paul's performance at the debates has rankled some GOP faithful, who have said he should not be allowed to participate in future debates. Supporters of the outspoken, quirky longshot have responded in force, inundating Republicans unfriendly to their cause with angry phone calls, according to The Hotline's On Call blog.

US Nuke Official: I Was A Government Assassin
Detroit News | May 18, 2007 06:23 PM

Federal nuclear watchdogs and members of Congress are seeking answers after a former security director at a western Michigan nuclear plant gave a bizarre series of interviews to Esquire magazine in which he claimed to be a hired assassin.

William E. Clark, who until recently was security chief at the Palisades nuclear power plant near South Haven on Lake Michigan, told the magazine for an article in its June edition that he had worked as a government assassin, killing people in Vietnam, New Orleans and Iraq.

Under Bush, loyalty has reigned supreme. But as his presidency unravels, his obligation to his faithful servants -- from Gonzales to Wolfowitz -- has become perilously relative.

** Al Gore **

Al Gore’s The Assault on Reason
By: Logan Murphy @ 2:34 PM - PDT

Time Magazine has made Al Gore this week's cover story, as well as offering an excerpt of Al's new book, The Assault On Reason:

American democracy is now in danger-not from any one set of ideas, but from unprecedented changes in the environment within which ideas either live and spread, or wither and die. I do not mean the physical environment; I mean what is called the public sphere, or the marketplace of ideas.

It is simply no longer possible to ignore the strangeness of our public discourse. I know I am not alone in feeling that something has gone fundamentally wrong. In 2001, I had hoped it was an aberration when polls showed that three-quarters of Americans believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for attacking us on Sept. 11. More than five years later, however, nearly half of the American public still believes Saddam was connected to the attack.

While Al Gore is still not committing to whether or not he will toss his hat in the presidential ring (he says "he's fallen out of love with politics"), Smoking Politics guarantees he will be attacked next week –for daring to say the truth about how dishonest political discourse has become.

Colbert - You have to see this! DeLay was believing it!

Colbert Nails a Clueless Tom DeLay
By: SilentPatriot @ 10:40 AM - PDT

When Stephen starts off the interview by saying "you're my first indicted guest," you know you're in for a good Colbert-style skewering. "The Hammer" gets nailed on his dopey mugshot, his pending legal troubles, his likening of liberals to Adolph Hitler, and Terri Schiavo — which Tom remembers as one of his finer moments.

Sam Seder's new Air America show, "Seder on Sundays" debuts this Sunday at 4 PM. As I noted last week, I'll be doing a segment called "Weekend Watchdog," which I'm bringing from the Campaign for America's Future blog.

On Fridays, I'll be posting, at both the CAF blog and Sam Seder's blog, suggested questions for the scheduled guests on the Sunday shows. Readers are encouraged to contact the shows and recommend the questions. Then on "Seder on Sundays" we'll circle back and see if our questions were asked and answered.

FTR - I wasn't drunk when I set up the screenname.

(NB: i'm not really a help-desk guy)

BTW - the system is set up for one email address per screen name

So even if I chose to create a new screenname, I'd have to create another email address in order to use it.

When I attempted to create a "new" screenname (the same one that I wanted to use) and inserted my current email address, I got the error message that both the screenname and email address are already in the system. It then asked me if I forgot my screenname and would I like a new one emailed to me.

"When I attempted to create a "new" screenname (the same one that I wanted to use) and inserted my current email address, I got the error message that both the screenname and email address are already in the system."

that's because it keeps track of your nic card ip address. unique to evcry card and therefore your computer. my everyday comp has three nic setups by default if yer in linux. one in windows if i don't change em manually.

ok, ShelaghC

1. your nic is registered (y/n)
2. you don't have a password (y/n)

if you don't have a password, it should be at the email address you gave

i didn't realise the password would be sent there

Yes, my nickname is registered

No I do not have a password.

It has never been sent to my email address.

I registered the same day that Sam opened the blog. I awaited the email with my official password so I could change it to something I preferred. I refreshed constantly throughout the day.

I never received the email.

I checked my spam folder multiple times.

I requested a new password multiple times.

I checked, double checked, triple checked and quadruple checked my email and spam folders every single time I requested a new password.

No I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever received a single solitary email from the system with any password ever, ever, ever.

No man is an island entire of itself; every man

is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;

if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe

Too easy to wind up on the other threads [I just was]

This is what I posted on the other thread before I realized my mistake:

My personal preference is for the simplicity of the chronological thread. I understand why people might want to do the open mic a la DailyKos, but for me that's one of the negatives of Kos - it was a bother to navigate. It draws attention away into smaller clusters. It's like too many channels on cable. I see the potential for it as well - the individual soap boxes, but as it grows and grows... it becomes a bit of a morass.

Oh shit .... I just realized I'm not on the main page. See? That's another thing.

Wayne Madsen on Letterman

May 18-20, 2007 -- On Wednesday night, CBS Late Night host David Letterman referred to our report about Dick Cheney being a client of the Pamela Martin & Associates escort agency in the 1990s. That earned Letterman a stinging commentary by Radar Online, a Hollywood gossip web site that leans decidedly to the neo-con right. Radar called Letterman a gap-toothed "comic." This editor remembers other late night TV hosts -- Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, and Tom Snyder. None of them were considered "comics." They were TV variety show hosts, not "comics."

In his monologue Letterman quipped, "Here's a story we're working on now. Apparently, there are rumors coming out of Washington that Vice President Dick Cheney, when he was the CEO of Halliburton, used to go visit prostitutes. This could explain why one girl was paid two billion dollars. I mean, I was thinking about this and Cheney ... I mean, going to a prostitute, that's ... I mean, I can't believe a good-looking guy like that would ever have to pay for sex, you know what I'm saying?"

More about MSM from Wayne....

Radar once had the backing of neo-con Mort Zuckerman. In something that should be of interest to Don Imus' attorney, Radar - which does not hide its sympathy for the Bush administration, is also backed by a consortium that includes Yusef Jackson, the son of Jesse Jackson. Jesse Jackson, along with Al Sharpton, were the chief instigators behind Imus' firing by CBS and MS-NBC. The current attack by Radar on Letterman appears to fit a pattern. Jackson and Sharpton have long been considered agents provocateur for certain special interests. One of Radar's original co-financiers, Jeffrey Epstein, was charged on July 27, 2006 with solicitation of prostitution from female minors.

This editor checked out a few more Radar stories. One criticized the TV commercials directed by Oliver Stone for Moveon.org that were against George Bush's Iraq war. Another pooh-poohed the discovery of two of Karl Rove's emails concerning the US Attorney firings as largely unimportant.

What is unimportant is the delusional self-importance of many entertainment executives who support the neo-con Bush cause. To report that Disney-owned ABC News caved on the DC Madam story is heresy -- an attack on Tinsel Town and New York megamedia and all that they represent. Some of these infotainment cockalorums make the worst politician in Washington look like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms by comparison.

DAMN! Cheney JUST.WILL.NOT.DIE!!!

:)

Thanks Dave...

Yesterday, Radar referred to this editor as a "weird and lonely" blogger. Anytime anyone in the neo-con corporate media executive office suites (and they know who they are) wants to compare life styles on the weirdness meter, I stand ready. By the way, when I'm lonely I don't have to resort to calling escorts or engage in phone sex. And as far as the name calling is concerned, when all Cheney's friends can do is muster up Gopher from the "Love Boat" and an on-line gossip column to throw stones, its merely a question of "mind over matter" -- I don't mind and they don't matter.

It is interesting how the right-wing corporate media is now treating the DC Madam story. After attempting to have ABC News put a lid on the story, the Cheney revelations have caused the media barons to relegate the matter to the gossip sector. However, this tactic is not working. As anyone familiar with national security knows, there are two signs that someone is a security risk: sudden and inexplicable affluence or a radical change in demeanor and personality stemming from blackmail. Colin Powell and Brent Scowcroft have both said that the Dick Cheney of today is not the same person they knew as Secretary of Defense. Cheney's reported dalliances during his time at Halliburton and his radical personality change call for a full national security investigation. If a foreign power or foreign interests had access to Cheney's phone records from the 1990s -- and many foreign intelligence agencies would have been interested in communications in the neighborhood of the CIA where Cheney lived -- there is a distinct possibility that blackmail is behind Cheney's push for the war in Iraq. The right-wing focused on Bill Clinton's comments to Monica Lewinsky during one of their conversations that he had been warned that a "foreign power" could be listening to his conversations. What was good for Clinton then should be good for Cheney now.

Thanks go to David Letterman for keeping this important story in the public eye. Note to Cheney and company: attempts to have a "work up" or "work over" done to this editor, whether from Washington or London, will surely fail as much as the Bush-Cheney administration has failed. Call off your dogs, Mr. Cheney.

Greg Palast

May 18-20, 2007 -- WMR readers will want to read Greg Palast's new edition of "Armed Madhouse: From Baghdad to New Orleans -- Sordid Secrets & Strange Tales of a White House Gone Wild." Of particular importance is a new chapter on how Karl Rove and the GOP election thieves plan to steal the 2008 election. At the heart of this plan was the firing of several of the U.S. Attorneys after the 2004 election. Greg does not disappoint in this updated version of his New York Times bestseller. You will read about the most insidious machinations of the Bush administration, including its callous and racist response to Hurricane Katrina. We cannot defeat the enemy without knowing his tactics.

Missy Heart, Ono, Miss Catharine, Star Vox, Donn, and all other bloggers posting or lurking...

May 18-20, 2007 -- WMR's

May 18-20, 2007 -- WMR's first series of articles, upon our inception in 2005, covered the misuse by the Bush administration, particularly Vice President Dick Cheney and State Department Arms Control Assistant Secretary John Bolton, of the National Security Agency (NSA) to conduct illegal domestic eavesdropping, particularly against Secretary of State Colin Powell, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, and Democratic members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, including ranking member Joe Biden. WMR reported that NSA's then-Director, General Michael Hayden, authorized domestic eavesdropping under the cover of NSA "training exercises," permitted under United States Signals Intelligence Directive 18 but illegal under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) if transcripts of the intercepts were maintained and not destroyed. We reported that the transcripts were sent to Bolton and Cheney.

Recent revelations by former Deputy Attorney General James Comey that in 2004 he, then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, and FBI Director Robert Mueller refused to authorize the White House's plans for NSA domestic eavesdropping are further indications that our well-placed NSA sources witnessed wholesale violation of FISA and internal NSA regulations prohibiting warrantless domestic wiretapping. Then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales and Chief of Staff Andrew Card attempted to have Ashcroft, who was barely conscious and recovering from surgery in George Washington University Hospital, authorize the illegal eavesdropping. Ashcroft refused the White House pressure as did Comey.

Mix it Up

Palestinian Right of Return

Right of Return

International refugee law expert Susan Akram argues that the legal basis for a refugee's right of return is established in three main bodies of law: the law of nationality and state succession, human rights law and humanitarian law. In all three, explains Akram, the right of return is both "a rule of customary international law and codified in international treaties." Pointing to numerous treaties that Israel has ratified, which bind it to recognize and implement this right, Akram argues that Israel is the state entity responsible for creating the refugees and is thus held responsible for the implementation of Palestinians' right of return.

During the July 2000 Camp David negotiations, Israel argued that it bore no responsibility for the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem or its solution.

In December 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton, through the "Clinton Parameters," adopted the concept of choice, or options, but excluded the most fundamental one: the option to exercise the right to return to Israel.

Israel and the Refugees

Despite confirmation by Israeli historians such as Ilan Pappe and Benny Morris, who pored over hundreds of declassified Israeli files and confirmed in minute detail that in 1948 Zionist forces committed massacres, expelled Palestinians and destroyed their villages, Israel refuses to admit responsibility for the depopulation of Palestinian villages and towns.

In a speech at the Technion in Haifa in 1969, (Haaretz, 4 April 1969) former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan confirmed: "Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you because geography books no longer exist. Not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either. Nahlal arose in the place of Mahlul; Kibbutz Gvat in the place of Jibta; Kibbutz Sarid in the place of Huneifies; and Kefar Yehushua in the place of Tal al-Shuman. There is not a single place built in this country that does not have a former Arab population."[...]
