Weekend Watchdog
Hello Sam Seder fans! This is Bill Scher. You may remember me from classic radio shows like "The Sam Seder Show" and "The Majority Report."
Sam has asked me to incorporate "Weekend Watchdog" into the new "Seder on Sundays" program. What's Weekend Watchdog? A way for us to influence the Sunday TV talk shows and get some real questions put to the politicians.
Fridays at the Campaign for America's Future blog, I've been posting suggested questions for the scheduled guests, and readers can add their own questions in the comments. I also include the contact information for the shows, so we can let them know what their viewers want asked.
Then on "Seder on Sundays," we'll circle back and find out if our questions got asked and answered.
My suggested questions for the week are below. Post your own, send 'em to the shows, and let's take back our media!
Remember: always be brief, polite and respectful when contacting the media, so our voices will be taken seriously.
For Newt Gingrich (NBC's Meet The Press) : You're one of the intellectual architects of the current foreign policy strategy in the Gulf, and President Bush is following your advice on Iraq by naming a "war czar."
Yet in May 1999 during the NATO campaign in Kosovo, you said that:
...the elite news media, the liberal academic elite, the liberal political elite: I accuse you in Littleton, and I accuse you in Kosovo, of being afraid to talk about the mess you have made, and being afraid to take responsibility for the things that you have done, and instead foisting on the rest of us pathetic banalities because you don't have the courage to look at the world you have created...
...I don't know why none of the Joints Chiefs have resigned because this campaign is a violation of every rule I know of in how you design a campaign...
... We are wasting our resources. Our prestige is diminishing. And all over the world we look like a violent, helpless, pathetic country.
Few now see the Kosovo campaign as a failure, but most of the American people believe the Iraq war is a failure that's not worth our resources .
Our prestige is greatly diminished, most recently manifested by our inability to control the presidency of the World Bank .
World opinion of the U.S. government has plummeted as many see the current foreign policy as "violent" and hypocritical on democracy.
Shouldn't you take some "responsibility" for the current "mess" in Iraq? And shouldn't the Joint Chiefs resign in protest?
For Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. (Fox News Sunday ): You support the immigration compromise because it's about "America being competitive."
As the deal devalues family ties in favor of work skills, and creates a new temporary worker program that would not allow new immigrants to stay and earn citizenship, is "being competitive" just a euphemism for maintaining a steady flow of cheap labor?
For Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. (CBS' Face The Nation ): You have called for a no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales .
But aside from the merits of removing Gonzales from office, would his ouster "put this behind us" as some have argued? Or would we still need to find out who put names on the prosecutor purge list and why?

For Newt Gingrich
For Newt Gingrich (NBC's Meet The Press) : WayneMadsenReport.com reported last week that two Republican presidential candidates are on DC-Madame Palfrey's client list. One declared and one not yet declared. Do you think publicly funded elections would promote a healthier election process? How would you change the process to help promote the candidates?

2 Hous member ask for no-confidence vote on Gonzales
Gonzales no-confidence vote proposed in House by Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Artur Davis (D-AL), two “former Assistant United States Attorneys, with a combined 10 years of experience as prosecutors in the Department of Justice.

Waiting and watching...why?
Sen. Allard ‘weighing’ Gonzales resignation call. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO) is “weighing” whether to call for Alberto Gonzales to resign “after reports that a former interim U.S. attorney for Colorado — who had Allard’s backing — was targeted for dismissal in early 2006. ‘Clearly these revelations are cause for concern,’ Allard’s chief of staff, Sean Conway, told The Associated Press Friday. … ‘(Allard is) watching things carefully and taking them all in…in terms of the attorney general’s future.’” Let us know how that goes.
UPDATE: Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO) makes up his mind. “Salazar today called for the resignation of his friend, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, whose leadership he said had tarnished the Department of Justice. ‘I arrive at the decision with a heavy heart and disappointment,’ said Salazar.”
** Doolittle **
Doolittle Blames Corruption Probe On Partisan Democrats At Bush Justice Department
In recent weeks, two conservative House members whose homes were raided in FBI corruption investigations have claimed that the raids were part of a Justice Department conspiracy.
Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) said the raid on his house last month was “little more than an attempt to intimidate and pressure” him to admit criminal wrongdoing. Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) said that the Justice Department had been leaking “lies” about him “and that needs to be investigated.”
Today, Doolittle took the conspiracy theory a step further, blaming the Justice Department’s actions on partisan Democrats inside the Bush administration:
In a telephone press conference with California reporters, the Roseville Republican said he still thinks the raid - and more importantly, the government’s leak of information about it - was all about rehabilitating the reputation of embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
But it wasn’t Republicans trying to do the rehabilitating, Doolittle said. It was embedded Democratic staffers in the Justice Department who were responsible because of the party’s “Republican culture of corruption” campaign.
Doolittle apparently didn’t explain why partisan Democrats would be interested in “rehabilitating” Alberto Gonzales’ image, or how these liberal Bush officials managed to convince FBI agents to seek a warrant for the raid and then convince a judge to approve the warrant. We’re sure there’s a perfectly good explanation.

The City of Lud!
Lud is a fictional city in Stephen King's Dark Tower series and mentioned in his Rose Madder. In The Waste Lands, the book's protagonists travel from Lud to an alternate reality version of Kansas via a supersonic monorail. However, they also pass through a thinny before reaching Kansas; therefore there may be no relationship at all between the Kansas of our reality and Lud.
Lud resembles New York City in many ways, most notably in a version of the George Washington Bridge. This "GWB" spans a massive river canyon that protected the city from marauders after the fall of the Imperium, and later of the river baronies. The bridge, and the rest of the city, has been in disrepair for at least five hundred years.
The state of Lud
Since the technological capacity of the Great Old Ones was lost, Lud has been slowly decaying for hundreds of years. This decay has been hastened by the siege and eventual (partial) occupation by the Grays.
Lud's streets are strewn with relics from The Great Old Ones. Cars are a common sight, albeit without glass and tires, both of which were probably highly prized commodities at one time. The streets are also strewn with human bodies: either ones killed in the frequent battles between the Pubes and the Grays, or sacrificed to the God Drums.
Nearly everything created by The Great Old Ones has incredible longevity: this applies to the robots who surface occasionally in the series as well as buildings like skyscrapers and military installations. Nonetheless, most buildings in Lud have fallen into heavy disrepair over the many years.
[edit] Geography
Lud is uniquely situated; it is protected on one side by a deep river valley that can only be traversed by the GWB parallel (see below); on the other, by deep cliffs that drop down into the radioactive hell known as The Wastelands. As a result, Lud is easily defensible, especially against the sword-wielding barbarians who tried to conquer Lud in the past.
[edit] Post-Affiliation History
Lud possibly belonged to a River Barony during the time of the Affiliation, and millenia before that, served as a capital city of the Imperium. After the local governments were destroyed due to rebellions similar to the one led by John Farson in Roland's own Gilead, Luddites began defending their city from roving gangs ("harriers") who pillaged any village they came across.
Lud was besieged by various armies for many years, but because of its fortunate location, the only way into the city was the "George Washington Bridge" and another bridge fallen to the river many years earlier. The "GWB" had many weak spots and holes, and was watched at all hours by both attackers and defenders. People in days of old who wanted to join the "Luddites" had to cross the bridge but many perished in the attempt.
Armies were routinely turned away by the Luddites, but their power was fading. Finally, David Quick, an "outlaw prince," mustered the "last army in the world" and attacked the city with what few advanced weapons he had.
Eventually, the Luddites were worn down completely. They had lost all technical knowledge and dissolved into nothing more than primitive inhabitants of a once-advanced city. They still managed to prevent a complete takeover of Lud, and David Quick's army was soon reduced to the same state as the Luddites. They soon became two factions: the Pubes and the Grays.
[edit] Pubes and Grays
[edit] Pubes
Pubes were the original inhabitants of Lud (after the Great Old Ones). The admittance test required quick wits and agility, and so youths more easily gained entrance than older people. The name Pubes is an apparent reference to this, as most of the members were pubescent at the time they joined. This may have originally been a derogatory term, but has become the commonly accepted name for the group. The Pubes live mostly above the ground, and are at war with the Grays. Blue bandannas are an identifying mark of the Pubes.
[edit] Grays
Grays are the descendants of David Quick's army who managed to infiltrate Lud and take control of the vast underground network of tunnels. They live mostly in these tunnels, and usually leave to fight their ancient war with the Pubes.
Since the Grays were originally a predominantly male army, there were few women to inhabit the Gray part of Lud. This forces the Greys to routinely "harvest" women and children from the Pubes. Yellow bandanas are the identifying mark of the Grays.
[edit] The God Drums
The God Drums are a form of psychological warfare used against the Pubes.
Shortly before the Cataclysm created the Wastelands next to Lud, its leaders installed large loudspeakers throughout the city. This P.A. system was still intact when the Grays took control of the city's underground, which included vast computer banks that controlled the P.A. system as well as the "brain" of Blaine the Mono.
The Grays used the P.A. system to periodically play a deafening recording of pounding drums. The superstitious Pubes executed one of their own, usually by hanging, every time these "God Drums" were heard. These sacrifices, the Pubes believed, appeased the evil spirits and prevented them from possessing the bodies of the dead to attack the living. Eddie Dean, upon hearing the "God Drums," recognizes them as the drumbeat from ZZ Top's song Velcro Fly.
It is unlikely that the Grays actually planned the Drums to have this particular effect; although the Grays are the most technically advanced people remaining in All-World, they cannot use most of the thousands of computers that fill the city's underground. According to the Tick-Tock Man:
"There's a thousand of those ever-fucking dipolar computers right under the ever-fucking city, maybe even a HUNDRED thousand, and the only ones that still work don't do a thing except play Watch Me and run those drums! I want those computers! I want them working for ME!" (The Waste Lands, p. 366)
Blaine the Mono mentions that he had done nothing for several years but play the God Drums for the Grays. This seems to indicate that the Tick-Tock Man was unable to use the city's computers because Blaine prevented him from doing so, not because he was unable to understand their operation. Additionally, Blaine does not appear to have any particular motivation for activating the Drums other than the sadistic pleasure he takes in sensing the Pubes' fear.

Slow Mutants!
Slow mutants are an offshoot of humanity in the post-apocalyptic world of Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
Slow mutants are the result of a long-passed nuclear war. They have green skin, and horrid visages. They are referred to as slow due to their clumsiness in battle. Roland Deschain, the gunslinger, seems to be very familiar with them. He encounters them several times in his adventures. The first time is in The Little Sisters of Eluria, where they demonstrate the ability to talk and make rudimentary reasoning. The second encounter is inside of a long tunnel transversed by ancient train tracks during Roland's quest to the Dark Tower. Roland also encounters slow mutants in the sixth and seventh books in the Dark Tower series. The slow mutants work for the taheen and other guards at Algul Siento for food and a place to sleep. It turns out that one slow mutant plays a very important role in the down fall of Algul Siento.
Slow mutants seem to love the flesh of humans, and will attack normal people on sight.

However, if all of this hoop-through jumping means that I will never again be forced to wade through another series of spamish posts from War Dog (or to read his "list" or his "plan" or his certainty that all evolves from "good choices" and nothing is affected by chance, or that he didn't hide from possible death or dismemberment in Vietnam by enlisting in the Air Force, or that the war in Iraq has accomplished wonderful positives instead of a shitstorm of negatives), then it will be worth it.

Hey Jim
How come the last post you did says 02:12, but the one right before it says 23:59?
Is that accurate [in terms of my time, of course]?
Chronological main Thread vs. Open Mic
My personal preference is for the simplicity of the chronological thread. I understand why people might want to do the open mic a la DailyKos, but for me that's one of the negatives of Kos - it was a bother to navigate. It draws attention away into smaller clusters. It's like too many channels on cable. I see the potential for it as well - the individual soap boxes, but as it grows and grows... it gets more of a morass.
Oh shit .... I just realized I'm not on the main page. See? That's another thing.

I'd really like to finish getting registered.
ShelaghC is my screenname.
If you'd like my email address, I can supply that too. I just don't want to post it in the blog for the world to see.
Anonymous, I had the same problem, I waited nearly 2 days. Then I re-registered under a different name and email address, and it came immediately. About 20 minutes later one of my previous requests showed up in my first email inbox. I just looked, and the first request is in the spam bin.
Upshot is, try giving it a different email address, or check your spam bin.
This is *so* weird
I just created a new email address elsewhere, created this screenname (which I don't want to use), and *immediately* I got the validation email - just as you said.
However, I still haven't seen anything for the screenname I *do* want to use in my standard email folder. And, yeah, I've been checking the spam folder constantly to see if it's shown up there.
The system *definitely* knows I've registered under my screenname of choice - it acknowledges that I've created that name and it knows my email address but it's never sent me my validation link.
I've even checked my deleted mail to see if I accidentally chucked it thinking it was junkmail. Nada there either.
The Blog doesn't like my real screenname for some reason.
I still want my screenname of choice, but I'll use this one for the time being until the Blog gets over itself.

My question, (maybe for Diane Feinstein) is if anyone thinks that maybe Cheney escaped being charged with violating the espionage act, and conspiracy (on AirForce One where Ari Fleisher,
Dick Cheney, Scooter Libby and Richard Armitage discussed Valerie Plame's identity and called at least six reporters about it...but Fitzgerald backed away from probing this in his questioning)...because Fitzgerald was worried about keeping his job?
[Was that clear?] Everyone speaks of Fitzgerald like he is Mr. Integrity. Though he could possibly have been worried about keeping his job like many other USAs might have been.

Homeless Vets vs. Bill O'Reilly, part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW2OagxHFV0
Ryan was the first vet I interviewed that day at U.S. Vets. As I talked to him, I simply couldn't believe that Ryan was just 21. It's not that he didn't look young, but the way he talked and what he was talking about reflected the experiences of someone much older.
By the age of 18, Ryan was fending for himself and figuring out what to do with his life while I was enjoying the training wheels/daycare we know as college. During his two and a half years in the Navy, Ryan was grappling with the forces of life and death. When he got out, Ryan was forced to experience the warped priorities of our government and face a country that claims to revere soldiers while leaving them out in the cold. At 21, I was coasting through my senior year of college, trying not to think about the future. At 21, Ryan had done what he was supposed to, but had no idea what the future held. At 21, Ryan was homeless, and the country he served didn't give a damn.
At 21, Ryan is a guy who should have his whole future in front of him. He should be looking at a world of limitless possibilities. That's what America is supposed to be all about, right? But because he served our country and because our government has little interest in supporting those who served, Ryan, at 21, is in trouble. He doesn't know what's going to happen to him. One slip up and he could be out on the streets again. He feels like the country he served has turned his back on him and that he has no place in it. Ryan wants to get a job, have a place to live, and be just like everyone else. He's not asking for anything special. He's trying, but his government isn't helping. If it weren't for the good people at U.S. Vets, it's hard to know where Ryan would be right now. He might just be another statistic, another number lost to addiction, mental illness, or suicide. A number with no name or face.
Bill O'Reilly wants to pretend that everything is great. That homeless vets want to be homeless, that vets with substance abuse want to be addicts. He wants to blame Ryan's problems on Ryan, not the system and people who ignore him. I don't mean to diminish him, but Ryan is 21. He's just a kid. Where were you and what were you doing at 21? What had you seen and experienced? What had your country done to you? Ryan served his country for 2 ½ years. His country said it would welcome him back with open arms and help him get a good job at a good wage so he could make a good living because he deserves it. At 21, Ryan is living at U.S. Vets in transitional housing while millionaires who never served like O'Reilly shit all over him.
There's something wrong with that picture. You know it. I know it. And Ryan knows it. In fact, Ryan has to live it.
If you want to help vets like Ryan, go to U.S. Vets and the Fitzgerald House. They spend every day doing what people like Bill O'Reilly won't.
Pejorative
From Wikipedia,
A word is a term of derision, or a phrase is pejorative, if it implies contempt or disapproval. The adjective pejorative is synonymous with derogatory, derisive, and dyslogistic. When used as an adjective, pejorative has two meanings: (1) tending to make or become worse, and (2) tending to disparage or belittle.[1] When used as a noun, pejorative means "a belittling or disparaging word or expression".[2]
Pejorative expressions that are not inherently dyslogisms may also be used in a non-pejorative way, however, and determining the intent of the speaker is problematic — as with any implied meaning. Conversely, a common rhetorical ploy is to apply "pejorative" to a factual descriptor — as "toxic" might be applied to poison — and then decry it as "pejorative" to suit the agenda of those defending the substance as harmless.
Not every instance of criticism is pejorative.
Sometimes a term may begin as a pejorative word and eventually be adopted in a non-pejorative sense. This happened with the terms Quaker, Yankee, Okie, Tory and Whig, Ham radio operator, Methodist, Shaker Unitarian, and Sooner which were originally slang insults but came to be used as non-pejorative standard words. In historical linguistics, this phenomenon is known as melioration, or amelioration. Sometimes a term is still considered as a pejorative word by some but not by others. In other cases, some groups have attempted to reclaim formerly offensive words applied against them, with limited success. Such terms as nigger (nigga), "kike", redneck, cracker, white trash, Redskin, dyke, queer, fairy, faggot, tranny, geek, nerd, chav, or cripple are considered pejorative if used by a non-member of the particular group in question. British English also incorporates many British regional slurs.
