Upshot

In general, I think this Palin Letterman "controversy" and ones like it are a complete waste of time. That said, this episode allows Palin to raise money and culture points from the whackos. And anything that empowers the Palinites diminishes that chances of Republicans everywhere and that makes me smile.

Judge: Ex-Bush lawyer can be sued over torture

Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer
Saturday, June 13, 2009

A prisoner who says he was tortured while being held for nearly four years as a suspected terrorist can sue former Bush administration lawyer John Yoo for coming up with the legal theories that justified his alleged treatment, a federal judge in San Francisco ruled Friday.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White's decision marks the first time a government lawyer has been held potentially responsible for the abuse of detainees.

"Like any other government official, government lawyers are responsible for the foreseeable consequences of their conduct," White said in refusing to dismiss Jose Padilla's lawsuit against Yoo.

The consensus was that Palin did herself no favors by what she is saying about Letterman right now.

Ahmadinejad set for landslide in disputed Iran vote
by Farhad Pouladi and Jay Deshmukh Farhad Pouladi And Jay Deshmukh 1 hr 29 mins ago

TEHRAN (AFP) – Hardline incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was on Saturday poised for a landslide win in Iran's presidential race, crushing his moderate rival and Western hopes for change in the Islamic republic.

Signs of tension emerged as his main challenger, ex-premier Mir Hossein Mousavi, cried foul over election irregularities and some of his supporters were beaten by baton-wielding police, an AFP correspondent said.

Ahmadinejad was assured of victory after election commission chief Kamran Daneshjoo said he had won almost 21.8 million votes or over 63 percent of the total with most districts counted.

Mousavi, one of Ahmadinejad's three rivals in the most heated election campaign since the Islamic revolution, had also declared himself the victor, well before official results were released, suggesting a tense feud ahead.

The international community has been keenly watching the election for any signs of a shift in policy after four years of hardline rhetoric from the 52-year-old Ahmadinejad and a standoff over Iran's nuclear drive.

North Korea says it will 'weaponize' its plutonium

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea vowed on Saturday to embark on a uranium enrichment program and "weaponize" all the plutonium in its possession as it rejected the new U.N. sanctions meant to punish the communist nation for its recent nuclear test.

North Korea also said it would not abandon its nuclear programs, saying it was an inevitable decision to defend itself from what it says is a hostile U.S. policy and its nuclear threat against the North.

Pentagon's Cybercommand

Pentagon's Cybercommand Raises Privacy Fears

Plans to put America's cybersecurity under the control of the Pentagon are raising some thorny privacy and diplomacy issues, the New York Times reports. President Obama has insisted that the military, under the cybercommand being developed, will not be monitoring private sector networks and Internet traffic—but Pentagon officials say the nature of cyberwarfare could make that promise difficult to guarantee.

Military officials believe it could be necessary to intercept some messages from abroad to check for viruses and terror threats as a kind of "digital customs inspection." The cybercommand, to be headed by a four-star general, will be tasked with carrying out attacks when necessary, and the military is trying to figure out the rules of engagement for when the threat comes from servers in neutral countries.

If the Pentagon and the military services see cyberspace as a battlefield domain, then the lines protecting privacy and our civil liberties get blurred very, very quickly.

U.N. warns of catastrophe as hungry people top one billion
Fri Jun 12, 2009 1:33pm EDT

By Silvia Aloisi

ROME (Reuters) - High food prices have pushed another 105 million people into hunger in the first half of 2009, the head of the U.N. World Food Programme said on Friday, raising the total number of hungry people to over 1 billion.

Urging rich nations at a meeting of G8 development ministers not to cut back on aid, Josette Sheeran said the world faced a human catastrophe as more people struggle to eat a decent meal.

"This year we are clocking in on average four million new hungry people a week, urgently hungry," Sheeran told Reuters.

"For the first six months of this year, 105 million people have been added," she said, citing figures to be released by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization next week that will raise the total number of undernourished people to over 1 billion.

In 2008, FAO said the world's hungry numbered 963 million.

The WFP needs $6.4 billion this year for food aid, but donors' contributions have fallen way behind that level -- it had around $1.5 billion at the end of last week.

The agency says it has had to cut food aid rations and shut some operations in eastern Africa and North Korea because of the credit crunch.

"I know it seems a big figure, but if you compare it with the global stimulus package, it means that for less than 1 percent of that we could help meet the urgent human crisis that is unfolding, and that is just as essential to the stability of the world," Sheeran said.

She said despite a decline in most food prices from record peaks last year, they remained high in developing countries, while global food aid was at a 20-year low.

Senators Held Stock in Bailed-Out Banks

Friday 12 June 2009

by: Reid Wilson and Kevin Bogardus | Visit article original @ The Hill

Senators who oversee the $700 billion Wall Street rescue package held stocks in many of the banks bailed out towards the end of last year, according to financial disclosure reports released Friday.

According to the reports detailing senators' finances in 2008, nearly half of the members of the Senate Banking Committee had holdings in financial institutions that have taken funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). The panel has jurisdiction over the bailout fund and other relief efforts directed by federal regulators to save the nation's financial system.

For example, Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), a Banking panel member, has assets in several banks that have taken bailout funds. Along with Goldman Sachs, the senator has several assets in Bank of America funds, worth at least $115,00. Bank of America has received $45 billion in government funds.

Another Democrat invested in bailed-out institutions is Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.). Schumer has assets valued between $15,001 and $50,000 in Morgan Stanley and $1,001 to $15,000 in Citibank, according to his financial disclosure report. Morgan Stanley received $10 billion in TARP money while Citigroup was given $25 billion from the program.

Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), another Banking Committee member, also invested in some of the banks that received federal money. In a separate trust that the senator does not oversee, Kohl had assets valued between $15,001 and $50,000 and another valued from $1,001 to $15,001 in JP MorganChase funds, which received $25 billion in bailout money.

Few Republicans on the committee have significant holdings in companies that have received federal bailout money.

corn is pollinated by wind

I wonder if the bees are smart enough to start avoiding the dangerous corn
=======

Corn is pollinated by wind, not insects. That's why it has tassels at the top that drop pollen down on the silks.

(Grew up on an Iowa corn farm.)

But there are plenty of other dangerous crops for the bees.

I was referring to an article I read, mishld

that stated that bees were dying off because of mutated corn that when ingested, caused the bees to have a disease similar to AIDS that was killing them off in droves.

However, in looking for the article, I found this one that said that bees feed off the pollen from the tassel of the corn - published by Utah State University (see page 4)

http://extension.usu.edu/files/publications/factsheet/corn-earworm%2798....

I thought it odd, that corn could be pollinated by wind, not insects. :-)

Mom told me stories about farmers having to jump off and abandon their tractors because of bee swarms in the cornfields. I don't suppose they were just there having tea parties or bee orgies, but I suppose anything is possible.

Your cited article tells of chemicals applied to corn to kill a corn pest, the corn earworm, can also kill bees. It says nothing about mutated corn.

Apparently bees do eat the pollen, but the corn plant doesn't get pollinated by it. The bees visit the tassles, but not the silks.

A quick search will give you many references to corn being wind-pollinated.

Never heard of a bee swarm in a corn field, but various ground-nesting bees and wasps were a hazard in hay fields.

The only bee swarm attack I experienced in childhood
was when I was standing on the tractor while my dad drove, hauling a load of hay bales on the road, and we drove over a rotten limb that had fallen during the previous night's storm. Honey bees had made a home inside. I freaked out but never got stung because the bees got tangled in my hair. My brother and cousins who were riding on the hay wagon did get several stings.
