Inappropriate Touching, 1990's

Formative years. They're mostly all gone now. There'll be no Sinatra, no Neil Young, no David Bowie, not for us. Not for my poor generation. Selfish bastards deprived us mainly of the opportunity to grow old with at least a few of our heroes. Oh poor generation. Oh wallow. The kids these days, they've got a President, and they've got a few cultural icons who might survive to enjoy life with them.

Is that too much to ask?

Begin:

I'll admit I got into Iron Maiden 1st, but Nirvana... Well on the bus in middle school, this kid a couple years above me let me listen to Guns n' Roses on his walkman, which I thought was OK. And a couple weeks later he played me the Nirvana tape. And I immediately went out and bought a guitar and taught meself how to play it a bit.

Never saw them live. My parents had heard the rumors.

couple years later

I stumbled on this on MTV late one night. Perspective shift.

My friend and I were enraged when we couldn't get in to see them in Boston. We were too young.

the "Soup" record

by Blind Melon became a staple. I still consider it one of the best records ever made.

It's damn haunting. And there isn't a bad song on it.

Sadly, Shannon Hoon, musical genius, decided that cocaine was more important than his new family.

Martin Carr

is a wonderful guy. And a wonderful songwriter. One of the best. There's not much of them on the Internets, but this is a great Boo Radleys tune:

Shoegaze? Why not?

The Jesus & Mary Chain

were not just an 80's post-punk band with too much hairspray and guitar feedback. They also made some fantastic music in the 1990's, which was when I caught up with them...

IMO, "Honey's Dead" and "Munki" are their best records, but who am I to argue with the thousands of used record shop employees still hung up on their "Psychocandy" debut...

The Manic Street Preachers

were the best band of the 1990's, and though I didn't figure that out until the early 2000's, I think that's more my fault than theirs...

The Manics' Richey Edwards was officially declare dead November 24, 2008.

Fin:

Maybe Thom Yorke will still be singing when I'm grey...

I can't tell what's up with this particular song, "Lift". It might be the best song they've ever written, but they refuse to release it. This was performed over a decade ago. Perhaps they've been saving it for a rainy day in a decade of sunshine? Do they know it's the best song they'll ever write and are saving it for the last single of their acclaimed career? Or maybe they think it sucks and isn't worth recording at all?

Ah well, I'm perfectly acclimated to being let down. I'm a child of the 90's after all...

addendum

also, U2 made their only two great records in the 90's. Achtung Baby and Zooropa.

Zooropa in particular is gorgeous. Allow me to demonstrate. Please ignore the Bono, everyone hates him anyways.

From a solely sonic and production standpoint, this is amazing stuff. It's still ahead of its time. I don't expect them to ever top it. If I were in a real critical mood, I'd say that Achtung, Zooropa, and their first album Boy are the only solid records they've ever made. Still, hats off to them and Brian Eno for creating something very strange and also kind of beautiful.
