Another fine day for the free market!
How long before Americans decide to stop paying income taxes? How difficult would that be to organize via the Internet?
Thanks for the warning 60th
I appreciate it1
How long before Americans decide to stop paying income taxes?
maybe we should all just incorporate. then we would qualify for bailouts too.
Maybe we can order the banks

I like your idea.
I would also like an apology from all these CEOs for screwing up; and then maybe jailtime, if appropriate.
A little accountability somewhere down the line ...

The public should form a giant corporation!
We the People, Inc.
Given the amount of debt the government has heaped on us in the past 8 years, against our combined net annual revenue and expenses, we would definitely be in need of a bailout! We the People, Inc. is definitely too big to fail!

Caricature [Boner] economics
The answer is, eliminate the capital gains tax. Now, what was the question?
John Boehner:
“If we’re really serious about creating jobs, what we ought to do is, we ought to eliminate the capital gains tax for the next two years on any equities that are purchased,” he said. He argued that cutting the corporate income tax would help boost employment.
This brings back a memory: on Sept. 13, 2001, I got frantic calls from staffers on Capitol Hill. They informed me that Republican leaders in the House were trying to use the terrorist attack to ram through, you guessed it, a cut in the capital gains tax.

Uproar in Maine over Obama assassination sign
November 20, 2008
Reuters
BOSTON (Reuters) - Passions flared in a Maine town on Thursday over a sign in a store asking customers to place bets on an assassination of President-elect Barack Obama.
The Town Council in Standish condemned the sign on Thursday in a 6-0 vote and declared it reprehensible at a meeting where some residents defended the store owner, saying he had a right to free speech even if in bad taste, local authorities said.
"The town of Standish condemns in the strongest terms any such alleged activity calling for violence against any individual no matter their position, race or ethnicity," said the resolution posted on the town's website.
The sign in the Oak Hill General Store asked customers to place a $1 bet on the date of Obama's assassination, and said "Let's hope someone wins," the Portland Press Herald reported. It was called the "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool."
The store in the town of 9,285 people in southwest Maine has remained closed since reports of the sign appeared in the media on Sunday.
About 80 people attended the meeting, including some who defended the store owner, said town clerk Mary Chapman.
"There were folks on both sides of the issue," Chapman said in a telephone interview. "People were passionate of their opinion but very respectful of others."
Obama's historic election victory as the nation's first black president has sparked racist incidents nationwide, according to groups that monitor hate crimes.
Obama, an Illinois senator, won the November 4 presidential contest in Maine over Republic Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

BREAKING: Al Qaeda To Apply For Bailout.
Citing the recent drop in the price of crude oil, its resulting impact on revenue to the Bin Laden family, and the general reversal of fortunes of the organization relative to the United States after the election of Barack Obama as President, Al Qaeda today announced plans to seek a bailout under the U.S. government’s Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
Speaking on a video released earlier today, current Al Qaeda deputy director Ayman Al-Zawahiri announced the organization’s intention to seek bailout protection.
Economic conditions are such that we will require bridge financing from the Great Satan so that we can continue to provide services to the Great Satan in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and in emerging markets. Once economic conditions have stabilized, we are confident that the Great Satan will be repaid many times over in blood of the Infidel.
Richard Perle, architect of the Iraq invasion, heralded the decision as one vital to the continued success of the Global War on Terror.
Our ability to defeat Al Qaeda depends on having a healthy Al Qaeda with an identifiable presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. We cannot allow Al Qaeda to go underground.
When asked if driving Al Qaeda underground wasn’t the object of fighting it in the first place, Perle maintained that the reporter "did not understand the complexity of asymmetrical warfare."
Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas, former Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and longtime Al Qaeda supporter, echoed the sentiments of Perle, and stressed the need to act quickly on any bailout.
As we approach the holidays, it is vital that we have an identifiable enemy in theater. Otherwise, our patriotic contractors, such as Blackwater and Haliburton would simply be murdering civilians. Having a credible Al Qaeda presence will ensure that we avoid any unnecessary and unflattering public relations problems.
More of this deliciously good snark here.

$7.7 Trillion Bail-Out
U.S. Pledges Top $7.7 Trillion to Ease Frozen Credit
Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. government is prepared to provide more than $7.76 trillion on behalf of American taxpayers after guaranteeing $306 billion of Citigroup Inc. debt yesterday. The pledges, amounting to half the value of everything produced in the nation last year, are intended to rescue the financial system after the credit markets seized up 15 months ago.
The unprecedented pledge of funds includes $3.18 trillion already tapped by financial institutions in the biggest response to an economic emergency since the New Deal of the 1930s, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The commitment dwarfs the plan approved by lawmakers, the Treasury Department’s $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. Federal Reserve lending last week was 1,900 times the weekly average for the three years before the crisis.

I agree. The market is a psychology-driven beast. When the national and global markets attitudes turn sour, the result can be traced back to a root psychological cause. In the current case, it is crappy loans driven by bundled mortgages sold as securities for no better reason than to make more bucks on a contrived derivative investment vehicle.

Sarah Palin's Turkey Farmer Killer Speaks Out - "Things Happen"
Sarah Palin's Turkey Farmer Speaks Out
ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 11/24/2008
INSIDE EDITION traveled to Wasilla, Alaska to speak with the turkey farmer seen in the background of the latest Sarah Palin video making headlines.
For the first time, the world is now hearing from the man seen in the background of Governor Sarah Palin's visit to an Alaskan turkey farm.
Brian Tomes says he was just doing his job and "things happen."
Tomes was going about his gruesome task of slaughtering turkeys as Palin gave a TV interview, talking about her Thanksgiving plans.
The farmhand told INSIDE EDITION he didn't realize he could be seen as Palin was speaking. "I thought they had panned in on her face.I did try and block the process," he says.
The video has become a YouTube sensation with more than 2.2 million hits so far.
Tomes has worked at the Triple D Turkey Farm in Palin's hometown of Wasilla, Alaska for the past nine years. He says Palin is being unfairly criticized over the video. "The only thing I can say is, 'Don't mess with my Governor!'"
INSIDE EDITION viewers seemed to agree, sending in e-mails following our coverage of the incident which has ruffled some feathers.
In an e-mail, one INSIDE EDITION viewer said: "It was a turkey farm...of course they butcher them there."
Another said: "Where do you think the turkey you buy at the store comes from?"

Monkey Waiters Hired In Japanese Restaurant Due To Economic Downturn

Restaurants are always hit hard during economic downturns, but one restaurant in Japan has a novel approach to cutting costs: replace the wait staff with monkeys. The monkeys only work two hours a day, but bring in tourists from around the globe. They've even been deemed sanitary, so long as they wear their miniature uniforms;

People Said to Believe in Aliens and Ghosts More Than God
People Said to Believe in Aliens and Ghosts More Than God
Robert Roy Britt, Editorial Director - LiveScience.com
livescience.com Mon Nov 24, 9:48 am ET
More people believe in aliens and ghosts than in God, a new survey finds, according to a British newspaper.
The survey, however, was done by a marketing firm in conjunction with the release of an X-Files DVD, and details of how the poll was conducted were not reported in the Daily Mail. Survey questions, depending on how they are written, can greatly skew results, along with how subjects are sampled.
That said, the poll of 3,000 people found that 58 percent believe in the supernatural, including paranormal encounters, while 54 percent believe God exists. Women were more likely than men to believe in the supernatural and were also more likely to visit a medium.
Indeed, humans are prone to believing in things they can neither see nor find logical evidence for.
A survey of U.S. college students done in 2006 found 23 percent of freshmen had a general belief in paranormal concepts - from astrology to communicating with the dead. Interestingly, the number jumped to 31 percent among seniors and 34 percent among graduate students.
Researchers who have compared various human belief systems say our tendency to believe is deeply rooted.
"While it is difficult to know for certain, the tendency to believe in the paranormal appears to be there from the beginning," said Christopher Bader, a Baylor University sociologist. "What changes is the content of the paranormal. For example, very few people believe in faeries and elves these days. But as belief in faeries faded, other beliefs, such as belief in UFOs, emerged to take their place."
Religion and belief in the paranormal are not linked as one might imagine. A handful of surveys show just the opposite, in fact.
"Paranormal beliefs are very strongly negatively related to religious belief," said Rod Stark, another Baylor researcher. Some scientists think this is so because religions tend to discourage paranormal beliefs, and indeed most devout practitioners of a religion have been shown to be the least likely to believe in Bigfoot, ghosts or aliens.

Cross-post from Bob Cesca's blog
To All,
I have finally figured out this game called the Bailout.
1.) We(lower/working/middle class) got fucked.
2.) WE have invested into 401Ks and mutual funds with as much disposable income WE could to establish some wealth in hopes to retire and not eat cat food.
3.) They(wealthy class) told us to keep our money in the market. Don't worry about the ups and downs that come. Movement in the market is a good thing.
4.) THEY used our investments to run up the stock market to include the companies THEY own and operate. THEY made millions off of our modest investments.
5.) THEY pulled their money out of the losing banks months ago to avoid any losses during this economic meltdown. WE stayed and have watched everything WE have worked for turn to shit.
6.) Stocks have fallen to record lows and now THEY are going to buy up these stocks because WE have just bailed out the market.
7.) WE have lost our retirement and now WE are going to pay the bill so THEY can make millions again.
KO is right this will not be called a Bailout for much longer. It will be called "How Daddy Went To Jail".
Please somebody send this to everyone who will listen and check my theory.

Bush was supposed to be the first M.B.A. president, which didn't work out that well. But the one lesson from that world we should import into politics is how to get rid of people. Instead of a three month transition period that gives them time to steal office supplies, get in a few last minute bombings and pardon his friends, he should be told to handover his I.D. and be escorted out by security after lunch.
Instead we have two more months of him, and he seems increasingly distracted. Chat with him yourself and see....

The dumbing down of the
The dumbing down of the GOP
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/saturdayspin/387928_gop15.html
THE ECONOMIST
John Stuart Mill once dismissed the British Conservative Party as the stupid party. Today the Conservative Party is run by Oxford-educated high-fliers who are busy reinventing conservatism for a new era.
As The Economist's pundit Lexington sees it, the title of the "stupid party" now belongs to the Tories' transatlantic cousins, the Republicans.
There are any number of reasons for the Republican Party's defeat. But high on the list is the fact that the party lost the battle for brains.
Barack Obama won college graduates by two points, a group that George Bush won by six points four years ago. He won voters with postgraduate degrees by 18 points. And he won voters with a household income of more than $200,000 -- many of whom will get thumped by his tax increases -- by six points.
John McCain did best among uneducated voters in Appalachia and the South.
The GOP lost the battle of ideas even more comprehensively than the battle for educated votes, marching into the election with nothing more than slogans.
Energy? Just drill, baby, drill. Global warming? Crack a joke about Ozone Al. Immigration? Send the bums home. Torture and Guantanamo? Wear a T-shirt saying you would rather be waterboarding.
The Republican Party's divorce from the intelligentsia has been a while in the making. The born-again Bush preferred listening to his "heart" rather than his "head." He also filled the government with incompetent toadies like Michael "heck-of-a-job" Brown.
McCain, once the chattering classes' favorite Republican, refused to grapple with the intricacies of the financial meltdown, preferring instead to look for cartoonish villains. In a desperate attempt to serve boob bait to Bubba, he appointed Sarah Palin to his ticket, a woman who took five years to get a degree in journalism and was apparently unaware of some of the most rudimentary facts about international politics.
Republicanism's anti-intellectual turn is devastating for its future. Its electoral success from 1980 on was driven by its ability to link brains with brawn.
The conservative intelligentsia not only helped to craft a message that resonated with working-class Democrats, which emphasized entrepreneurialism, law and order and American pride. It provided the party with a sweeping policy agenda. The loss of brains leaves it rudderless, without a compelling agenda.
This is happening at a time when the American population is becoming more educated. More than a quarter of Americans now have university degrees. Twenty percent of households earn more than $100,000 a year, up from 16 percent in 1996.
The Republican Party's current "redneck strategy" will leave it appealing to a shrinking and backward-looking portion of the electorate.
Why is this happening? One reason is that conservative brawn has lost patience with brains of all kinds. Many conservatives -- particularly lower-income ones -- are consumed with elemental fury about everything from immigration to liberal do-gooders.
They take their opinions from talk radio and regard Palin's apparent ignorance as a badge of honor.
Another reason is the degeneracy of the conservative intelligentsia itself, a modern-day version of the 1970s liberals it arose to do battle with: trapped in an ideological cocoon, defined by its outer fringes and incapable of adjusting to a changed world.
The movement has little to say about pressing problems and expends too much energy on xenophobia, homophobia and opposing stem-cell research.
Conservative intellectuals are also engaged in their own version of what Julian Benda dubbed la trahison des clercs, the treason of the learned.
They have fallen into constructing cartoon images of "real Americans," with their "volkish" wisdom and charming habit of dropping their "g's."
How likely is it that the Republican Party will come to its senses? There are glimmers of hope. Business conservatives worry that the party has lost the business vote. Moderates complain that the Republicans are becoming the party of "white-trash pride."
One of the most encouraging signs is the support for giving the chairmanship of the party to John Sununu, a sensible and clever man who has the added advantage of coming from the Northeast.
But the odds in favor of an imminent renaissance look long. Richard Weaver, a founder of modern conservatism, once wrote a book titled "Ideas have Consequences"; unfortunately, too many Republicans are still refusing to acknowledge that idiocy has consequences, too.

CNN Ordered to Rehire 110 Workers Fired for Belonging to a Union
This report likely won’t be on CNN’s “Headline News,” but after five years, former workers at CNN have finally gained justice. In a decision made public today, an administrative law judge ordered the network to rehire 110 workers who were fired because they were union members. CNN also was ordered to recognize the workers’ unions, National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-CWA (NABET-CWA) locals 31 and 11.
Judge Arthur Amchan found that CNN violated the rights of more than 250 employees at the network’s bureaus in Washington, D.C., and New York City when it ended its subcontract with Team Video Services (TVS), whose employees were represented by NABET-CWA. He also ruled that CNN discriminated against TVS employees who wanted to continue working at CNN’s bureaus to avoid having to recognize and bargain with the union.
Ed McEwan, president of Local 11, said the decision
is a victory for workers, but one that took far too long to achieve
because of our broken labor laws. Everyone in America should know that
the network management we rely on to bring us the news are not above the
illegal practices that they headline on a regular basis. From the very
beginning we promised our members that “we will not forget.” We didn’t,
and we’re keeping up the fight until fairness is fully won.

Perriello (D) Wins (VA) House Seat
The State Board of Elections certified Virginia's Nov. 4 election results, which includes a win for Democrat Tom Perriello over Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., a longtime incumbent in southern Virginia.
Goode has not conceded the close race and has 10 days to ask for a recount. Calls to his spokesman were not immediately returned.
"The citizens of the fifth district have spoken, every vote has been counted and certified, and they have elected Tom Perriello to be their new representative in Washington to bring the change and economic recovery they need,'' said Jessica Barba, a Perriello spokeswoman..

Wachovia execs may get $98.1 million severance
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wachovia Corp (NYSE:WB - News), which lost $33 billion in the last two quarters, said 10 top executives may be entitled to $98.1 million in severance pay after the bank is acquired by Wells Fargo & Co
In a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Wachovia said the executives would receive severance under their employment agreements if the merger closes by December 31, as expected. Wachovia said shareholders will vote on the merger on Dec 23.
The 10 executives do not include Robert Steel, who in July replaced the ousted Ken Thompson as Wachovia's chief executive, and does not have an employment agreement.
Wachovia also said a closing would entitle its 11 executive officers, who include Steel, as well as Chairman Lanty Smith to $2.5 million in equity-based awards under existing stock incentive plans. But the executives' stock options are worthless, the bank said.

Bail-outs for Corporations? We need decorporation!
DECORPORATE the predators!
'Corporations' first priority is profit'--I contest this view
Although it now is said by everyone, including Thom, that the first priority of an American corporation is to profit, I contest this view. This view is the capitalist rewrite of the purpose of the corporation.
I contend that the government's intent in legally licensing the corporate mode was the public good. That's the history of it, right? Now that the biggest, most bailed-out corporations have proven themselves to be outright PREDATORS on the public (investors and consumers alike) in every way -- we should admit that many corporations today exist in violation of their original charter/license agreement (that permits special dispensations and tax protections etc.!).
Oh yeah, there are excuses that the "free market" and removal of regulations are to blame. Baloney! These predatory corporations have been violating and twisting the truth since before the Reagan Revolution. Indeed, it's been happening for so long, and we are so removed from the conception of American corporations, that the public is led to believe profit is the only purpose of the corporation. The government licensed the corporation to help fulfill governmental programs and to aid the business sector in furthering public goals and the success of society at large. This corporate responsibility has now been ignored and replaced with pure PREDATION. We are expected to accept this PROFIT FIRST stuff, but it is as much hocus-pocus as the so-called Corporate Personhood Supreme Court ruling. Both are scams on the public!
I just saw "Who Killed the Electric Car", and it illustrates that corrupt corporate minds deliberately choose to destroy products that would benefit the public. My friend has lost almost half his 401K this year, with no recourse against the predatory scam going down by the bank corporations et al. When will we say 'NO' to this continued predatory mode of operation?
When will the corporations be forced to live up to the agreements made to the public at the heart of corporate existence.
I'm reaching here, but hope someone with some know can tell me how incorporating permits profiteering to the point of harming the public!
Krugman: Citigroup Bailout Necessary But Structured Outrageously
Krugman: Citigroup Bailout Necessary, But Structured Outrageously
Huffington Post | Nicholas Graham | November 24, 2008 06:51 PM
One economist who's not pleased with the way the bailout of Citigroup is structured is Nobel Prize winner, and Princeton economics professor, Paul Krugman. Krugman acknowledged that the bailout was necessary, but wrote on his blog that the structure of this bailout is an 'outrage':
A bailout was necessary -- but this bailout is an outrage: a lousy deal for the taxpayers, no accountability for management, and just to make things perfect, quite possibly inadequate, so that Citi will be back for more.
Krugman also criticized the details of the Citi bailout on CBS' The Early Show:
"If Citigroup had not been bailed out, then the whole financial system could collapse," said Princeton economics professor Paul Krugman on CBS' The Early Show.
But is the government bailout of Citigroup well-structured, and are taxpayers getting a fair deal here?
Krugman, author of "The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008" (Norton), says on first read, no.
"Most of the people who have looked at it, the small hours of this morning, have said this is a lot of taxpayer risk in return for not much," Krugman told co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez.
"It looks like a very sweet deal for Citigroup management, very sweet deal for Citigroup shareholders, to the extent they have anything left - not very good for the taxpayer. This was not good."
With other bailouts seemingly having done nothing to boost consumer confidence, Rodriguez asked, why do it if it is not well-structured?
"Well, you know, things could be worse, you know? That's been the moral of this crisis: things can always be worse,' Krugman said, "and they have been getting worse.
"Things could be much worse than they are. It's what hasn't happened, not what has, is the justification. We had to do this, but we should have done it better."
Wall Street cheered the news of Citigroup's bailout with stocks rising sharply.

Virginia GOP Rep. Goode Seeks Recount After State Certifies Democratic Pickup
Virginia GOP Rep. Goode Seeks Recount After State Certifies Democratic Pickup
Mon Nov 24, 1:10 pm ET
Democrat Tom Perriello's upset victory over Republican Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. in the Nov. 4 election, by a margin of 745 votes, was certified Monday by Virginia's elections board. But Goode responded by requesting a recount of the contest in the 5th Congressional District, which he has represented for the past dozen years.
Perriello told reporters Monday that he was "honored and humbled" by the certification of the returns showing he won what began as a distinctly long-shot challenge.
"We are continuing to move forward with our transition program, focused on how we can be ready to hit the ground running on day one, working on bringing jobs and economic relief back to the district," he said.
The certified count shows Perriello defeated Goode by 158,712 votes to 157,967 votes, which translates to a margin of victory of about two-tenths of 1 percentage point. That is well within the threshold set by Virginia law that allows the trailing candidate to request a recount if the margin is less than 1 percentage point.

A friend who worked for an agricultural magazine once visited a chicken farm that had a 'processing' plant.
After seeing a worker chopping off chicken heads rapid fire, my friend asked the owner if it was hard to find workers to do that job day after day. The owner replied that it wasn't hard to find workers to do the chopping, but it was hard to keep workers who would not take their work home and 'chop' their wives or somebody else.

Alien-like Squid Filmed at Ultra-Deep Oil-Drilling Site
Alien-like Squid Filmed at Ultra-Deep Oil-Drilling Site
Kelly Hearn | for National Geographic News | November 24, 2008
A mile and a half (two and a half kilometers) underwater, a remote control submersible's camera has captured an eerie surprise: an alien-like, long-armed, and—strangest of all—"elbowed" Magnapinna squid. (See photos of Magnapinna.)
In a brief video from the dive recently obtained by National Geographic News, one of the rarely seen squid loiters above the seafloor in the Gulf of Mexico on November 11, 2007.
The clip—from a Shell oil company ROV (remotely operated vehicle)—arrived after a long, circuitous trip through oil-industry in-boxes and other email accounts.
"Perdido ROV Visitor, What Is It?" the email's subject line read—Perdido being the name of a Shell-owned drilling site. Located about 200 miles (320 kilometers) off Houston, Texas (Gulf of Mexico map), Perdido is one of the world's deepest oil and gas developments.
The video clip shows the screen of the ROV's guidance monitor framed with pulsing inputs of time and positioning data.
In a few seconds of jerky camerawork, the squid appears with its huge fins waving like elephant ears and its remarkable arms and tentacles trailing from elbow-like appendages.
Despite the squid's apparent unflappability on camera, Magnapinna, or "big fin," squid remain largely a mystery to science.
ROVs have filmed Magnapinna squid a dozen or so times in the Gulf and the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
The recent video marks the first sighting of a Magnapinna at an oil development, though experts don't think the squid's presence there has any special scientific significance.
But the video is evidence of how, as oil- and gas-industry ROVs dive deeper and stay down longer, they are yielding valuable footage of deep-sea animals.
Some marine biologists have even formed formal partnerships with oil companies, allowing scientists to share camera time on the corporate ROVs—though critics worry about possible conflicts of interest.
Real Deal
The Perdido squid may look like a science fiction movie monster, but it's no special effect, according to squid biologist Michael Vecchione of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who is based at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
In 1998 Vecchoine and University of Hawaii biologist Richard Young became the first to document a Magnapinna, based on juveniles of the Magnapinna pacifica species. M. pacifica was so unusual that the scientists had to create a new classification category to accommodate it: the family Magnapinnidae, which currently boasts four species.
In 2001 the pair released the first scientific report based on adult Magnapinna specimens, as seen via video. The study demonstrated that Magnapinna are common worldwide in the permanently dark zone of the ocean below about 4,000 feet (1,219 meters).
(See "'Weird' New Squid Species Discovered in Deep Sea" [December 20, 2001].)
In 2006 a single damaged specimen from the North Atlantic led to the naming of a second Magnapinna species, M. talismani. And in 2007 the scientists documented two more: M. atlantica and a species based on a specimen from the mid-Atlantic.
That fourth Magnapinna species remains nameless, because its arms were too badly damaged for a full study. "However, it was clearly different from the three known species," Vecchione said.
The Magnapinna species apparently have only slight physical differences, mainly related to tentacle and arm structure in juveniles.
The subtlety of those variations makes it impossible to identify which species is in the oil-rig video, given that at least two Magnapinna species—M. atlantica and M. pacifica—are known to inhabit the Gulf of Mexico, Vecchione said...

There should be a thorough investigation of the ways in which the current Administration may have disregarded the Constitution (examples: under the Constitution, the suspension of habeas corpus rights -- for anybody -- is flatly prohibited; the Constitution gives to the Congress, not the Executive, the sole authority to determine the treatment of captives; surveillance of American citizens requires a warrant). But that investigation should -- no, must -- be carried out not by an independent commission but by the Congress, just as Harry Truman, a Democratic Senator, investigated the War Department in a Democratic Administration and just as a Congress controlled by Democrats investigated the Watergate break-in during a Republican Administration. Party considerations must not trump legislative responsibility. The Congress has the obligation to examine whether laws were broken or new laws are needed. Members of Congress have taken an oath to defend the Constitution. During the Bush Administration, the Congress receded further and further into irrelevancy; it is up to its new members to ensure that it regains its position as the First Branch of government. The original post begins with the wrong premise: the competing forces in this drama are not Republicans and Democrats but the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch and it's high time that the legislative branch re-established itself as a separate, independent and equal check on the presidency.
