Somebody made a telling
Somebody made a telling comment about Manhattan last night on the Malloy show. If the elections get stolen, New Yorkers will order a bagel and a coffee and read the paper. Without Wall Street, Manhattan would be a wasteland. Rent is incredibly high there. Just like healthcare is too high everywhere, Why is that so?

Great article by John Cusack who completely nailed the Republican greed machine. Remember folks, it was the Republicans who looted our treasury in the name of Holy Capitalism, wrapped in the flag of patriotism, singing jingoistic hymns until they were hoarse.
Call them out on their delusions and greed!

Catholic Bishop: Voters Who Support Pro-Abortion Obama Put Salvation at Risk
by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor, November 3, 2008
Kansas City, MO (LifeNews.com) -- In one of the most far-reaching statements about Catholics and the presidential election, Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City has urged Catholics not to vote for Barack Obama. Bishop Finn says Catholics who support him put their souls at risk by supporting Obama's "fanatical" stance on abortion.
The comments came in an interview with KCMO 710's Chris Stigall.
"There are Catholics listening to me right now who are thinking strongly or are convinced that they will vote for Barack Obama. What would you say to them?" Stigall asked the bishop.
"I would say, give consideration to your eternal salvation," Finn responded.
"To vote for a person who has a fanatical determination to not only support abortion as it is now but to remove all limitations on it through the Freedom of Choice Act and to extend it without any recourse -- throwing out all of the efforts of citizens over the last 35 years to place reasonable limits on abortion," Bishop Finn explained.
"By voting for a person who has expressed his determination to do this to Planned Parenthood and NARAL -- you make yourself a participant in the act of abortion and you mustn't do it because your eternal salvation is tied up with that important choice," Bishop Finn said.
Following his appearance on the radio program, Bishop Finn appeared on the Mike Gallagher Show on another station.
Gallagher asked: "In good conscience, how can a Catholic vote for Senator Obama?"
Finn replied, "I don't think any Catholic can in good conscience," he said. About Obama, Finn added, "In his brief career, he has collected a very consistent record of a kind of fanaticism for abortion."

The small minority of the catholic uber right radical one issue voters are freaking out that polls of catholic voters show Obama with a lead among catholics. It is amazing that a very few bishops are violating their own election rules as put forth in The American Council Of Catholic Bishops document FaithfulCitizenship.org specifically saying:
Political Responsibility Guidelines to Keep in Mind during Election Season
Parishes and other IRS-designated section 501(c)(3) church organizations are prohibited from participating in political campaign activity. Thus, certain political activities that are entirely appropriate for individuals may not be undertaken by church organizations or their representatives.
Activities to Avoid
In order to avoid violating the political campaign activity prohibitions, parishes, other church organizations, and their representatives should remember these guidelines:
* Do not endorse or oppose candidates, political parties, or groups of candidates, or take any action that reasonably could be construed as endorsement or opposition…

"The era of market idolatry is over."

"As Bush leaves office, the real truth is this: the new economies of the world disprove everything he ever said. Apparently that doesn't matter.
Neoconservatives will lie in the weeds and gather forces, the same players in a revolving door. They want back in and if history has proved anything, worshiping the markets is not enough. We must actually kill to feed them.A horrible cross-pollination of fundamentalism, dementia and market fever has turned America into a willing enabler of corporate cannibalism. Nothing else to call it when murder is seen as a legitimate extension of economic policy."

The real challenge is to erase the delusion that greed equals freedom and prosperity, let alone the hideous lie that it somehow spreads justice.

just talked to an 82-yr-old in virginia who went to vote, but came home after the lines were too long. tried to give him the number for voting help, but he didn't want it. says he might not bother going back...
sam, the long lines make me very nervous. i remember feeling that it was a great thing in cincinnati in 2004, that it meant incredible voter turnout. it didn't. it meant not enough machines and voting problems all over the place. granted, it might mean something else in new york...

Poll Problems in Kansas and MO
The wrong voter registration books were sent to 3 different locations. Election workers didn't show up. Booth machines that didn't work...

Morning!
It's a beautiful day and will be a beautiful night for an election celebration (or riot).
Personally, I want Palast and Brad Friedman to be proven wrong...I know they're both convinced they're going to steal it and i have to say, I find a some of what they've been saying to be alarmist bunk, tin-foil hat territory. They play a valuable role, but I have seen them become a little egomaniacal about it. Who knows, though, today might just be a vindication for all the work they've done.
I suspect Republicans will pull out all the stops, regardless of the overwhelming support and enthusiasm for Obama and his incredible campaign machine. I know they have all the machinery in place, but I also believe that if it looks ANYTHING like 2000 or 2004, Obama will fight that shit with all he has...he won't repeat Kerry's mistake after all of this work and with all of this support behind him and everything at stake...and, I think the media will back him and not McCain and there will be more coverage of the efforts to disenfranchise voters.
I, for one, am celebrating today, not biting my nails.
Who else?
Warner - VA for sure
Shaheen - NH has a good shot
Martin - GA very possible upset.
I watched them spoil a ballot and make him do it over
I've never seen that happen before.
The election workers seemed to be very slow, deliberate, careful. They would not fill more than half the booths at a time.
I think that is part of the reason it took 1 1/2 hours to vote.
voting lines
not bad where I am (Astoria) - small polling place. I saw people from my neighborhood and building - there was a crowd, more than I remember from before. Good mood. Short wait, too; the line moved crisply.

Perspective
"thing I hate about election days is that reading around the internets you get lots of reports of voting problems, often with lots of exclamation points, by people who don't seem to be able distinguish between serious voter intimidation, general incompetence, and the to be expected occasional malfunctioning machine or whatever. Obviously our election system is completely stupid and in an ideal world we'd have only a small fraction of all of these problems, but not all of these problems are evidence of massive conspiracy.
...adding, voting issues are serious, but the inability to distinguish between the important and the not so important obscures what the real problems are."
Thanks Atrios

Votes do get scrubbed, mostly minority votes. That is Palast's bailiwick. Friedman is all about vote flipping by the rightwing. I used to think it was largely tinfoilism, but he does compile lots of evidence.
The consensus among the "hatters" seems to be that Obama's lead is too big to flip, but that several house and senate races are in danger of remaining Republican.
Who is Palast, Who is Friedman,
and can we please identify the state whose elections we're referring to so I can learn something?

Reply to Greg Palast
September 20, 2005 By George Galloway
Until a couple of days ago I hadn't heard of Greg Palast in years, the man who claims to have been pursuing me with questions for two months. He has never phoned, written, emailed or made any other contact with me, which is curiously reminiscent of the behavior of the US Senate committee. Having now forced myself to look at his pernicious writing, it seems like the deranged ramblings you might expect to find pushed out from under the door of a locked ward. He claims to be a journalist. He clearly doesn't get much work.
Palast conflates meetings, truths and half-truths, statements taken out of context to produce a toxic smear which would be actionable in the country he claims to work in, my country. How many times do I have to respond to the ravings of guttersnipes? I met Saddam twice, the same number of times as Donald Rumsfeld. The difference is that I wasn't trying to sell him weapons and guidance systems. The first, and infamous time, my words were taken out of context. The second, where Saddam revealed his favorite confectionery, I was trying to persuade him to let the weapons' inspectors back in. A vain mission, of course, as the US and UK had already decided to illegally go to war whatever he did.
The Mariam Appeal, which Palast drags in to allege I benefited financially from its work, was not a charity. It was a political campaign. Its primary function was not to provide medicines for Iraqi children, although we did, but to highlight the political conditions which were killing them. Sanctions! The largest donor was the ruler of the UAE (who gave approximately £500,000), followed by Fawaz Zureikat's £375,000, and then the now king of Saudi Arabia (a regime I loath) with £150,000. The donations of these three represented 99% of the campaign's total income. These donors were prominently identified at the time, there was no attempt to hide them, as this palooka claims. None of them have complained the money was ill-spent. Palast might take the view that finance should not be taken from such sources. Sorry, but needs must.
Among the works undertaken by the appeal was a daily newsletter on sanctions, a sanctions-busting flight into Baghdad, the Big Ben to Baghdad trip in a red London bus, countless meetings and conferences, posters and flyers, the projection of an anti-war slogan on the House of Commons, the first time that had ever been done -- and the facilitating of trips to Iraq by dozens of journalists, many of whom sat in on my meetings with Tariq Aziz. And virtually all of whom were conducted around Baghdad by Fawaz Zureikat, openly introduced as the Mariam Appeal's chairman, as well as a businessman trading with Iraq. We brought Mariam Hamza to Britain for treatment -- immodestly, but factually, I claim that we saved her life -- where she remained for half a year, sent back cured. I could go on and on but my enemies would surely claim I was blowing my own trumpet.
But what I will not tolerate -- and will sue in any territory where it is possible to do so -- is the lie that I personally benefited financially from the campaign. The Charity Commission inquiry Palast refers to was occasioned by a referral from Tony Blair's Attorney General. The commission are in possession of every receipt of funds and every cheque issues or bank transfer ever made. They satisfied that there was no malfeasance and closed the case without further action, no doubt to the disappointment of Mr Blair's Attorney General. Charities in Britain cannot campaign politically, which was the prime function of the appeal and in their judgment the commission said that the operation should have been split in two, one arm of which, the one which provided the physical aid, should have registered as a charity. Well, sorry, but that's poppycock.
The stumblebum then drags in Hitchens -- perhaps it's two bums finding mutual support -- a man I recently debated in New York. For what seems like the ten-thousandth time let me try to finally nail the canard that I benefited through the oil-for-food programme, an allegation at the time of writing which has netted me at least $4 million in libel damages and costs. Of course, when I talked with Tariq Aziz, I talked about the programme, but only in respect of the effects it was having on Iraq. I did not request or receive oil vouchers. I did not benefit financially. Not by one thin dime! I said voluntarily and on pain of prosecution under oath to the US Senate committee -- another body which doesn't let the facts get in the way of a good smear -- and I say it again. If I had been guilty of what Palast alleges I'd be sitting not in the House of Commons but a prison cell! Let that be an end to it because I'm sure the public is even more tired and bemused than I am.
Crawl back under your rock, Mr Palast!

Right now they're pushing for this Proposition A that would remove loss limits. It will actually aid and abet gamblers to dig themselves into deeper holes and is a terrible thing, an enabler for them, IMO. But, here you've got teachers on these commercials begging for this Proposition A so the schools can have more money.
IF churches had to PAY TAXES, they could be as politically involved (as they are) and not be waving a huge KMA at the Code of Federal Regulations (as they do) every time they open their mouths.
Hey, I am poor as they come, and I pay $1800 a year to my kids' school in taxes, regardless of whether they go there or to a private school. Every church should have to pay right along with me.

Careening threads
Since I have not seen it anywhere but the have been several threads going so I could have missed it.
Mark Luther was Al Franken's high school friend who was the conservative. I found those exchanges a lot better than Hartmann's daily challenge. Luther had a Fiddle Camp at which another of Al's friends Andy Stein teaches. Andy was a charter member of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen and moved on to Asleep at the Wheel and much more. He is a pretty regular on the Prairie Home Companion.
Since the purity patrol is ragging on Franken, calling him a 'carpet begger' is a little unfair. Al was raised in Minneapolis but after college pursued a career in entertainment and ended up in NYC. Go figure.
I would tend to believe Gram Parsons on the Country Honk story. He worshiped those guys (may have cost him his life) and when asked about their denials he just said that it was an honor just to have been associated with the Stones. Ry Cooder was not as forgiving.

You can learn early what early voters did
But the final count from polls will take hours and hours
County clerks will announce about half of their vote counts shortly after the polls close today.
But for the rest of the count, it's anyone's guess. Which means most Coloradans could be fast asleep before the final, unofficial results are in early Wednesday - if all goes well.
Election workers already have processed more than 1.3 million mail ballots and 365,000 votes cast at early voting sites statewide. That's about half of the state's registered voters.

Sessions
"No Expectations"
Under the influence of the great Robert Johnson, "No Expectations" became the band's signature soulful blues numbers. The return of the slide guitar was as welcome as it was unexpected. While recording Beggars Banquet, the Stones made a virtue of using guest musicians, including virtuoso guitarist Ry Cooder, then all but unknown to the public, and Dave Mason of Traffic. Both of them, as well as Brian Jones, recorded slide-guitar parts for "No Expectations," and nobody involved seems very clear on whose recording was used on the released version.
ottilie
toni d is on poll duty, she's an election judge for her precinct, so she'll be hard at work today all day probably into late evening
Beggars Banquet
"Factory Girl"
The most countrified number on Beggars Banquet introduces an instrument wholly new to the Stones' repertory, the mandolin, as played by Ry Cooder. By the time these sessions were done, Cooder had been offered the chance to join the group as Brian Jones's replacement. He turned it down, of course, preferring instead to make his way as a solo act in his own image.
There's also a country fiddle in here, courtesy of Lord knows who. Nicky Hopkins suggested it for flavor, and it works, giving the track the feel of an authentic folk song recorded in the field. As a piece of rural working-class sentiment, it was different for the Stones but still slotted in perfectly alongside the rural blues and urban blues/rock found elsewhere on the record.

Firstly, Keith Richards played extensively with Ry Cooder, and was taught his open-G guitar tuning (as used by John Lee Hooker), later admitting " I took Ry Cooder for all I could get ". Secondly, both Jagger and Richards befriended Gram Parsons, who introduced them to country music with which he had grown up. Music was not all the Stones and the independently wealthy Parsons had in common: "We liked drugs," Richards said later, "and we liked the finest quality."

EXCLUSIVE: Obama/DNC Incident Report Database Reveals Startling, Wide-Spread Voting Machine Problems Across Nevada During Early Voting
Presidential Race Missing on Ballots; Machines Go Down; Votes Not Recorded; Printers Jam
Attorneys Decline to Take Action to Remove Machines From Service, Ensure Paper Ballots for Voters.
Wide-spread voting machine failures have been reported to the Obama/DNC election protection hotline in Nevada since early voting began more than a week ago in the state, The BRAD BLOG has learned. All voters who vote in person in the crucial battleground state are forced to cast their votes on 100% unverifiable Sequoia EDGE touch-screen voting machines with the VeriVote "paper trail" printer add-on.
Attorneys monitoring the incident reports coming in to the hotline have taken no action in regard to removing the failed machines from service, despite reports of the presidential race not appearing at all on some ballots; voters having problems selecting their preferred candidates; machines not starting up at all; "paper trail" printers jamming or running out of paper, and; a number of machines at a number of sites which refuse to work at all.
And this is just during early voting. A number of those startling reports are posted at the end of this article...

Thanks for providing that Galloway article..interesting...I have always enjoyed Galloway's debates, especially against fucking Cristopher Hitchens, who is just a obstinate slob...
I have no real opinion of Palast, I have read a lot of his writings and his site, as well and think he has brought a lot of things to light that weren't in the light before....but, I also see a trend in his writing that seems like journalistic reaching and very circumstantial..
The one thing I can't buy is that one fifth of ALL registered voters have already been purged from the voter rolls in Colorado
"In swing-state Colorado, the Republican Secretary of State conducted the biggest purge of voters in history, dumping a fifth of all registrations. Guess their color."
Palast and Robert Kennedy Jr. did a great and scary piece on this in Rolling Stone, but it is hard for me to swallow completely considering that that is an awfully large amount of people for a state to disenfranchise. Too large to not go unnoticed by all other journalists in this country and I find it specious that Palast and Brad Friedman from bradblog.com are seemingly purposefully ignored at many major progressive blogs.
Like I said, Palast does great work and I want him to keep doing it, but I find that it is having more and more of a self-serving tone to it, bradblog too.

something to factor in is that they know how many ballots were sent out. if the difference between the two candidates is greater than the number of ballots than counting them is a formality that does not effect the outcome.
this has been the case in ohio where provisional ballots were ignored in the past because they couldn't fill the gap between the candidates.
again
The Seven Blunders of the World is a list that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi gave to his grandson Arun Gandhi, written on a piece of paper, on their final day together, not too long before his assassination (1948).
1. wealth without work
2. pleasure without conscience
3. knowledge without character
4. commerce without morality
5. science without humanity
6. worship without sacrifice
7. politics without principle
This list was a result of Gandhi's search for the roots of violence. He called these acts of passive violence (greed, selfishness, hate, anger, etc.). Acts of passive violence generate anger in the victim, and since the victim has not learned how to use anger positively, the victim abuses anger and generates physical violence. He said that preventing these (blunders) is the best way to prevent oneself or one's society from reaching a point of violence.

hey, we're counting on northeast ohio to win this for obama. that plus my familys 2 votes :)
our turnout was reminiscent of 2004 although we have moved from the conservative burbs to the progressive urban area in the intervening time. i'm just hoping most of those people standing in line this morning are looking for the same change i'm looking for.

Some of the stuff that Friedman and Palast come up with seems incredible. But much turns out to be accurate. Ohio was crawling with fraud in '04. It was interesting that, although Nader had been barred from the ballot, his name was physically on the ballot and somehow Kerry votes were flipping to Nader (I think). Peter B Collins pointed this out to me in a private e-mail.

Ry Cooder latest-I, Flathead
Ry Cooder’s I, Flathead, is the culmination of his ambitious and fascinating "California Trilogy," the last of three albums in which the singer and guitarist journeys through the real and imagined history of mid-20th century, multi-ethnic California, sampling the sounds of its barrios and byways, its nightclubs and honkytonks. He encounters the disenfranchised, the hopeful, the cheerfully strange and seriously nefarious, along with the occasional alien who races around in a souped-up flying saucer on the desert salt flats. On previous installments, Chávez Ravine (2005) and My Name Is Buddy (2007), learning the facts and stories behind Cooder’s songs made them even more compelling, whether it was the not-quite vanished legacy of the Chávez Ravine neighborhood of Los Angeles, bulldozed to make way for Dodger Stadium, or the allegorical, Bound For Glory-like adventures of Buddy Red Cat in a time of commie-baiting and union-busting. This time, however, no research is necessary: Cooder, a California native, has written a remarkable 104-page novella to accompany this disc, a surreally funny page-turner of a tale about itinerant musician Kash Buk and the various characters he meets in his travels out west, all of whom get to narrate parts of the story. If you mixed John Steinbeck with, say, Thomas Pynchon, and threw in a bit of Popular Mechanics for good measure, it might read something like the I, Flathead narrative.
Haven't heard it yet. My fellow Cooder fans say it is great.
Use a 1 in its place MMRules

Women's hands 'harbour more
Women's hands 'harbour more bugs'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7705608.stm
Women have a greater range of different types of bacteria on the palms of their hands than men, US research suggests.
The study also found that human hands harbour far higher numbers of bacteria species than previously thought.
Using powerful gene sequencing techniques, researchers found a typical hand had roughly 150 different species of bacteria living on it.
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study found bacteria types varied greatly between individuals.
The researchers, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, hope their work will help scientists to establish a "healthy baseline" of bacteria species on the human hand.
This could potentially help them to identify which species are linked to specific diseases.
Lead researcher Dr Noah Fierer said: "The sheer number of bacteria species detected on the hands of the study participants was a big surprise, and so was the greater diversity of bacteria we found on the hands of women."
The study detected and identified more than 4,700 different bacteria species across 102 human hands in the study.
However, only five species were shared among all 51 participants.
Even the right and left palms of the same individual shared an average of only 17% of the same bacteria types.
On average, women had 50% more bacterial species on their hands than men.

Just voted in Saint Louis County
Took me 1 hour and 15 minutes. 10:45 to 12:00 noon.
Have any of you guys taken your camera to your polling place? I took mine and took photos outside the building standing in line and then inside in the gym crammed full of voters. A worker came over and said I could not take photos unless I was someone with the media whose credentials had been cleared. I asked them to show me where it said you were forbidden to take pictures. They didn't have anything in writing. So, they got on the phone and said an election judge would send out the police to arrest me unless I stopped taking photos. So, I stopped taking photos. Outside, the Obama worker called and and they said that was in fact the law. But, I can't find it anywhere. This is supposed to be America. No one is allowed inside with campaign stuff so there is no way to know how anybody was going to vote.

Attempted break-in at my polling place...
Woke up this morning to the news that there was an attempted to break-in at more polling place that resulted in a police officer being grazed in the head by a bullet.
http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1108/566885.html
The news said that the best time to go vote is between 10am and 3pm. I figured I would wait till then especially with the incident that occurred.
When I got there the line was about sixty people deep outside the building with a line 30 deep inside the building hallway and 4 lines with 15-20 deep in the all purpose room. There were 14 voting machines. It took approximately 1.5-2 hours to vote, but people were exhilarated by the historical nature of this election.
In addition. there were two important questions. One was on allowing slots machines at primarily racing facilities; and the other to allow early voting in Maryland.
When I left the polling place the outside line was a little shorter, probably 40 outside. The streets are unusually busy with a festive ambience, or may be its the euphoria of seeing so many people voting, the likes I've never seen before in my voting experience.
`flip animation' thing..?

galloway used to have a radio show
fantastic, such great debating skills and a way with words, also loved his scottish accent - kind of like a sophisticated malloy, if you can imagine such a thing, got really addicted to it for a while - i used to download the podcasts and listen in bed in the evenings, it did wonders for my insomnia; not sure why, but i found it comforting, his tirades against blair and bush and the neonazi xenophobes who called in to his show and he just destroyed their arguments with such gusto, it was something to behold
also a great defender of palestinian rights against israel's abuses
at some point i stopped listening because downloading the podcasts had become too much work, they had a funky website and a volunteer handling the technology, worse than the early maron seder stuff - i wonder if it got better now, should give it another try

I was gonna ask...
Liddy's situation depends on which state he lives in.
I believe laws/restrictions range from none to complete ineligibility.
He could afford to go anywhere, I'm sure he lives somewhere liberal.
here's the bottom line on E-voting:
a) because the ballot definition software is proprietary, the secretaries of state cannot certify that it does what it is intended to do (record voter's intent).
b) because the voting machine software is proprietary, the secretaries of state cannot certify that it does what it is intended to do (record voter's intent).
c) because the tabulator software is proprietary, the secretaries of state cannot certify that it does what it is intended to do (record voter's intent).
'live-fire' testing is not possible under the current circumstances, since the 'calibration/test' software is separate and also proprietary.
any one of a), b), or c) is sufficient to de-certify (or not certify in the first place) - but there's more:
because of a) or b) or c), there is no way to do a recount.
ever. even the Veri-Vote so-called 'paper-trail' is generated by the unverifiable software, so it is neither verifiable nor certifiable.
'lost' or 'spoiled' votes cannot be identified as such.
independent field-testing of machines running proprietary software routinely show error-rates (known input comparison to output) of 10%.
a return to paper ballots is the only solution; it would undoubtedly require each state to file lawsuits to recover costs from the voting machine vendors, and complicated by state-by-state HAVA-funding. Lawsuits against the EAC and FEC will also make this even more difficult.
An immediate 'fix' would be to open all voting software, firmware, and hardware to independent, public review; but this would not eliminate the problem.
The practical solution would modify the machines to generate a voter-verified ballot with a unique identifier number and barcode which the voter takes, verifies, and places into a secure ballot box.
The electronic data collected by the machine is used as a backup, or for 'instant polling' results; but only paper ballots are used for optical-scan or hand counting, certifiable votes.
I'm open to other suggestions.

Greg Palast/Bill Richardson
Speaking of...
I remember that in _The Best Democracy Money Can Buy_ (?) that Palast said Richardson was capable of looking the other way for voter suppression in 04 because although "he had the right to call himself a Mexican-American," (almost a direct quote) he was also a "Citibank-American"(because his Anglo father was an executive for them in Mexico when he met R's mother). I hope there was more to it than that, but it did strike me as kind of a simpleminded explanation of the conduct, whether or not the allegations themselves were true.
I'm not dumping on Greg Palast generally at all. I don't know enough from independent sources to question his stuff on election fraud and it has always sounded plausible to me in general.
Other skepticism to be shared by more informed ppl than I?

He is the most down to earth person there is. He's from Flint. Anyway, he has organized a film fest here in Traverse City that has become in three years our best summer tourist attraction. This despite all types of abortive efforts to destroy it by Christo-fascists.
Btw he drives a highly used minivan.

In line with the first report:
DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.
Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.
"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.
With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

________________
How-do, glory:
Tho' you didn't axe me, I will offer my opinion, fwiw.
I is gotta hunnerd-year-old Victorian in downtown Tragic City, tho' I'ma presently working in Alaska. I is seen and met and spoke with Michael Moore onna casual basis on several occasions thru the years (mostly thru the TC Film Festival, tho' other occasions as well; Mike's gotta place on Torch Lake, if mem'ry serves), tho' I'm near-'bout certain Mike's got no clue who I am. (Why should he?)
That said, w/o fail, Mike has been funny, affable, patient, kind and open to myself and all those I've seen him interact with. Unfailingly so. Ever'one I know who's met him sez the same.
Now, perhaps he beats his dog in private 'n strangles kittens just for fun, but my sense is he's just what you see -- one hell of a nice guy and a true patriot.
It's a testament, in my mind, to the false equivalence memes that daily get pimped by the village idiots who run our moribund press corpse that Michael Moore is somehow portrayed as the equivalent of someone like Ann Coulter. (You know, b/c they're both so *extreme*. And *scary!*)
No. Man Coulter is a paid shill (operative) for any and all Republican disasters, no matter how counter-productive or self-defeating. Michael Moore is a kind-hearted progressive who isn't extreme in the slightest and puts the well-being of his fellow Americans first. Both have strong points of view, but one deals in bad faith, the other in good, imo.
But, I guess it's like Oscar Wilde observed many years ago (in paraphrase): “If you're going to tell people the truth, be funny or they'll kill you.”
An aside: Michael Moore, in addition to creating the TC Film Festival (w/a coupla locals), also renovated a (historic!) movie-house (sounds grander than it is, but it's still nice) called the State Theater in downtown Traverse City. What's innerestin' from them's what knows is this:
Tragic City is allus been run by Republicans, mostly of the Rockefeller or Bill Milliken variety. And like many communities, the downtown is allus struggling to figger out how to reclaim its former glory in commerce. Well, Michael Moore has gone a long ways towards rejuvenating Tragic City's downtown w/his work on the Film Festival and the State Theater and other initiatives.
So here's the upshot. There now exist a great many downtown Republicans who loathe and despise Michael Moore w/every fiber of their being, but, knowing where their bread gets buttered, now make a point of kissing his ass.
Not that Michael Moore encourages such ass-kissing. He doesn't, apparently. (Tho' I suspect he finds it somewhat amusing that the same sorts who used to call him a "traitor" are now kissing his ass. Hey, he's only human.)
But, evidently that psychic whiplash is just part 'n parcel of the kiss-up/kick-down mentality that frequently accompanies a Republican worldview.
Oh you are a twisted soul Dan...
That would be the ULTIMATE fuck you to the boneheads...
I would certainly get a chuckle out of it. :)

Currently, Betfair lists Barack Obama as an overwhelming 1-7 favorite (paying $8 for a $7 winning bet). A John McCain win would pay $6.80 for every dollar bet.

Funny you sez, Jim: Just hadda fella tell me on the sly 'bout that very phenomenon offa Cape Edgecombe on Kruzof Is.
The guys what's snuck out for day-trips during our trial of awful weather ain't done much. Purty slow fishin' for them's what's ventured out.
Me 'n a buddy been waitin' for a unrowdy forecast to make a trip north, mebbe Slocum Arm in Khaz Bay or round the corner of Peril Strait 'n to the south offa northern Baranof. Coupla hot springs further south, too.
Wanna go deer hunting and drag them trinkets thru the water 'n see what turns up, but it'll be nice to (hopefully) celebrate an Obama win.
Took a 10-hr. safety course from AMSEA (Alaska Marine Safety Education Assoc.). Showed footage of two largish vessels (hunnerd-footers) colliding at sea to illustrate just how quick a boat could sink. One vessel T-boned t'other (twere both steel). The T-boner reckoned it'd be a good ideer to pull his bow outta the T-bonee. The T-bonee could be heard wrenching steel -- it took on water inna gaping hole 'n sunk (and I mean gone) in less than 5 seconds. One poor sad-sack got caught inna hatch-door and the vessel pulled him under.
A curio aside, fwiw: It's a myth (as you prolly know, Jim) -- fostered primarily by the maudlin (imo) film Titanic, I reckon -- that a sinking vessel creates a vortex or "bubble" that'll drag you under. The rigging or lines can drag you under, or you can get trapped by all sorts of structures, but evidently there were a cook (if mem'ry serves) on the Titanic what was wearin' a Mae West 'n just kept climbing to the top of the sinkin' vessel (think it went bow-down, stern in the air) and when it went full-under, he never even got his head wet. Or so the story goes we was tolt at the AMSEA gatherin'. They just wanted to vividly reinforce the advice that it's best to stay w/the boat till she goes full-under.

"The Fix" Cocktail
I just made this recipe that Rachel Maddow posted yesterday, only with lime. Very yummy.
The Fix
Source: an American classic! courtesy of Josey Packard
Build in a tumbler:
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon water
mix that up til the sugar has started to dissolve
half-fill the glass with cracked ice, then add:
2 oz spirits (josey likes whisky)
fill the glass to the brim with more cracked ice
stir
garnish lavishly -- slice of lemon, slice of lime, berries, tropical fruits if you've got 'em.
Howdy everybody

mire, thanks. Yes. Specifically Vigo County, according to Rove
Vigo County’s election record cited by Karl Rove
Staff report
The Tribune-Star
TERRE HAUTE — Karl Rove, the man credited with orchestrating President George W. Bush’s two successful campaigns for the presidency, reportedly singled out Vigo County as a place to watch tonight when election returns start coming in.
In response to a questioner on Fox News, Rove said he would be watching Indiana’s returns in general, and Vigo County’s in particular because of the western Indiana county’s unique record of picking presidential winners in all but two elections in the past 100-plus years.
Vigo County has not failed to vote for the eventual presidential winner since 1952, when Illinois Sen. Adlai Stevenson won a narrow victory here over Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The National Law Journal
November 4, 2008
The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the departments of Defense, Justice and Homeland Security, seeking an explanation for the Army's decision to station what the ACLU believes is an active-duty military unit inside the United States.
The ACLU says this is the first-ever permanent deployment of an active-duty unit within the country. The deployment threatens "a significant erosion" of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, according to the civil rights organization, and raises critical questions "about the longstanding separation between civilian and military government within the United States -- a separation that dates to the Nation's founding."
In its FOIA request, the ACLU asked for records relating to the decision to deploy the unit, as well as documents concerning its purpose, including "contemplated functions; duties; surveillance activities; and relationship to existing civilian agencies or personnel or the National Guard."
