Mud eruption 'caused by
Mud eruption 'caused by drilling'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7699672.stm
By James Morgan
Science & Environment reporter, BBC News
The eruption of the Lusi mud volcano in Indonesia was caused by drilling for oil and gas, a meeting of 74 leading geologists has concluded.
Lusi erupted in May 2006 and continues to spew out boiling mud, displacing around 30,000 people in East Java.
Drilling firm Lapindo Brantas denies a nearby well was the trigger, blaming an earthquake 280km (174 miles) away.
Around 10,000 families who have lost their homes are awaiting compensation, which could run as high as $70m (£43m).
After debating new evidence at a conference in South Africa, most geologists voted drilling as the cause.
Correspondents describe the result a significant development in the tug-of-war to establish liability for the disaster.
The debate on the cause of the eruption took place at a meeting of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, in Cape Town.
It was the first time the two opposing sides had agreed to debate before an international conference of independent experts.
The contest was chaired by a professional football referee - Professor John Underhill, an Edinburgh University geologist, who is also a match official in the Scottish Premier League.
The dispute centres on some newly released data - measurements taken from the Banjar-Panji-1 exploration well during the final 24 hours leading up to the eruption.
Professor Richard Davies, of Durham University in the UK, argued that these readings clearly point to a build up of pressure, causing fractures which propagated from the bore hole to the surface 150m away, resulting in the eruption.
However, Rocky Sawolo, senior drilling adviser of Lapindo Brantas, used the same primary data to argue the opposite - the pressure within the well was within acceptable limits.
His colleague Dr Adriano Mazzini, of the University of Oslo, testified that the fracture was triggered by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake two days earlier, centred on Yogyakarta, some 280km away.
But these claims were directly contradicted by Dr Mark Tingay from Curtin University, Australia, a geological pressure and rock mechanics expert.
The earthquake "was at least an order of magnitude too small," he said, stressing that the force felt at the Lusi site would have been "very small" - comparable to the effect of a heavy truck passing overhead.
When the vote was called, 42 out of the 74 scientists in the audience were convinced that the drilling was the trigger of the eruption.
Only three voted for the earthquake.
A further 16 scientists believed the evidence was inconclusive, and the remaining 13 felt that a combination of earthquake and drilling was to blame.
"The geologists voted overwhelmingly that drilling was the most likely cause," said Prof Underhill.
"The atmosphere was very tense, so all credit to them for not sitting on their hands.
"Hopefully this will be a catalyst for taking things forward. To my mind the result demonstrates that at the very least, the drilling company have a case to answer."
Prof Davies said: "I remain convinced that drilling was the cause of the mud volcano.
"The opinion of the international scientists adds further weight to my conviction."

Republican Mailer In Ohio Targets Wright, Says Obama's "Friends" Are "Hostile To America"
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/11/gop_mailer_in_oh...
By Greg Sargent - November 3, 2008, 12:30PM
The Republican Jewish Coalition -- which recently hit Pennsylvania mailboxes with a mailer implying a vote for Obama could produce a second Holocaust -- is now hitting Ohio with a wave of incendiary new mailers that directly target his association with Reverend Wright.
"Barack Obama's friends and advisors: Pro-Palestinian, Anti-Israel, even hostile to America," reads the mailer, adding that his associates harbor "anti-Israel views" that are "dangerous, naive and reckless."
A second mailer attacks Obama on Israel with a picture of the Wailing Wall, a holy site whose use in a political attack could prove offensive to many Jews.
Ironically, both mailers, which are presumably targeted to Jewish voters, landed in the Columbus-area mailbox of Cliff Schecter, the author of the anti-McCain book "The Real McCain." Schecter sent them in to us.

Now on my blog: "Cesca has lost it."
Bob Cesca is off the reservation, and his childlike adoration for Senator Obama is nauseating. I've written about my admiration for Cesca and his blog on my blog in the past. Now I wish that I could retract some of my praise. Cesca has entered into a phase of hero worship for a man who has disrespected Moveon.org and condoned illegal wiretapping (to name two of only at least twenty abominations from this year). Although I want Senator Obama to win this election, everything that I have witnessed about him during the last several months indicates that he is quite possibly to the right of Bill Clinton. He is deserving of your support; he is undeserving of worship.
Aside from Cesca's nonstop propaganda, I think that I came to the realization that he has lost it when he posted this poll on his blog -- a poll that he probably created. He concluded after much hesitation that he wished Kerry had won the '04 election, but it indicates that Cesca and the people who either voted for the first option or hesitated about the choice think that:
1) Bush "ain't so bad."
2) Obama is the actual christ.
3) Kerry was almost as bad as Bush.
4) Some combination of 1-3
Cesca, stop. Please. You're at 50. We need you to be at 5. You're reminding me of the [k]onservatives who blindly worshipped Bush during the early half of this decade.
Seriously.

(...)Why will the G.O.P. become more, not less, extreme? For one thing, projections suggest that this election will drive many of the remaining Republican moderates out of Congress, while leaving the hard right in place.
For example, Larry Sabato, the election forecaster, predicts that seven Senate seats currently held by Republicans will go Democratic on Tuesday. According to the liberal-conservative rankings of the political scientists Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal, five of the soon-to-be-gone senators are more moderate than the median Republican senator — so the rump, the G.O.P. caucus that remains, will have shifted further to the right. The same thing seems set to happen in the House.
Also, the Republican base already seems to be gearing up to regard defeat not as a verdict on conservative policies, but as the result of an evil conspiracy. A recent Democracy Corps poll found that Republicans, by a margin of more than two to one, believe that Mr. McCain is losing “because the mainstream media is biased” rather than “because Americans are tired of George Bush.”

As the United States presidential election looms, it's not just polls in the US that are putting Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the lead.
A witch doctor in Kogelo, western Kenya, where Obama's father grew up, on Saturday also predicted victory for the Democrat.
John Radima, who lives not far from the home of Obama's grandmother in Kogelo, threw stones, bones and shells on the ground and "read" them.
The message was that Obama will be the winner in the November 4 election.
Meanwhile, the press began to set up camp outside Obama's grandmother's home ahead of Tuesday's historic US election.
Obama has become quite a celebrity in Kenya, where a popular song and a musical have been released in his honour.

A campaign of, by and for working-class people
...After months of hard work, the PSL secured ballot status in 12 states—more states than any other U.S. socialist organization.
The PSL’s La Riva/Puryear ticket achieved ballot status in New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont in the Northeast; Arkansas, Florida and Louisiana in the South; Iowa and Wisconsin in the Midwest; and Colorado, Utah and Washington state in the West. In all, the PSL’s candidates will appear on the ballot before nearly 30 percent of the U.S. electorate.
Accomplishing this was no easy feat. We had to decode complex ballot access barriers in nearly every state. PSL members and allies gathered a total of 45,000 petition signatures to get on the ballot. In New York state alone, in the course of six weeks of 14-hour days, the PSL collected nearly 30,000 signatures. We recruited over 100 electors and held state conventions across the country. We fought blizzards, tornadoes and hurricanes to win ballot access.
Not only did we field national candidates for president and vice president, we also had 10 additional congressional, state, and local candidates in Washington, D.C., Florida, Chicago, South Dakota and California. All ran openly as socialists and members of the PSL; all received significant local media coverage and support from progressive people. Two PSL candidates for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors received 53,000 votes combined.
‘People over profits’
Unlike the capitalist candidates, who say anything to win voter allegiance, our goal is to build a movement. The PSL is not a party of professional politicians. We are revolutionary activists, organizers and working-class leaders.

String of bombings shakes Baghdad, kills 10
By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer, Mon Nov 3, 2008
BAGHDAD – A series of bombings struck Baghdad and a neighboring province Monday, killing at least 10 people and wounding 40, including a deputy oil minister who was injured when a bomb went off in front of his house as he was leaving for work.
Most of the six blasts occurred in Baghdad, reinforcing U.S. military warnings that extremists remain capable of launching attacks in the capital despite an overall improvement in security.
The attacks took place on the eve of the U.S. presidential election between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain, who hold widely differing views on the war in Iraq.
Six people died when a pair of bombs — one of them hidden in a trash can — exploded in Tahariyat square in the Karradah district of central Baghdad during the morning rush hour.
Police said 21 people were wounded, including 10 policemen and two women. The blasts blew out store fronts lining the square in a mostly Shiite area of eastern Baghdad.
Soon afterward, a bomb went off in front of the north Baghdad home of Abdul-Sahib Salman Qutub, a deputy oil minister in charge of crude oil production. Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said the bomb was attached to Qutub's car and went off as he was walking to the vehicle.
Qutub was treated and released from a hospital, but his driver was seriously injured, Jihad said.
One policeman was killed and six were injured in a roadside bombing in east Baghdad, police said. Another policeman and a civilian were wounded when a bomb went off near a police patrol in the western part of the capital.
In Baqouba, about 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, a car bomb blew up across the street from the provincial council headquarters, killing two policemen and a 10-year-old girl, Diyala provincial police said. Nine people were wounded.
A group of people were inside the council headquarters attending a conference on how to protect journalists in Diyala, one of Iraq's most unstable provinces. None of the participants was hurt, police said.
The police officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not supposed to release the information...

Mississippi's Largest Paper Endorses Obama
by Robert S. McElvaine, Posted November 2, 2008
Mississippi's Largest Paper Endorses Obama
If Colonel Robert McCormack, the longtime publisher of the arch-Republican Chicago Tribune is spinning in his grave as a result of that paper's endorsement two weeks ago of Democrat Barack Obama, imagine what sort of posthumous somersaults the brothers Thomas and Robert Hederman must be doing after this morning's editorial in the Mississippi paper they controlled for a half century through the middle deacdes of the twentieth century.
No major media organ was more intransigent in its support for segregation and its opposition to the civil rights movement than the Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Mississippi. Typical of the paper's attitudes on racial questions was its headline after the 1963 March on Washington at which Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech:
WASHINGTON IS CLEAN AGAIN WITH NEGRO TRASH REMOVED
In the days when the Hederman brothers owned the paper, it frequently warned of the dangers of the horror of "miscegenation."
This morning the Clarion-Ledger endorsed a mixed race man who identifies himself (as the Hederman brothers would have identified him) as black for president of the United States!
The times, they have a-changed.

With all the energy and
With all the energy and excitement about Obama and this election, the reality is that some folks will have to wait in line before voting. But there's no reason for it to be a downer. With your help, we can turn it into a party!
Why a party? So many people showing up and voting for change is a reason to celebrate. And, of course, we need everyone to stick it out and vote. Here's the idea: If we can make the lines at polling places fun and entertaining, more folks will stay in line and vote. It's easy: after you vote (or while you're waiting), you can bring food, water, and entertainment for your neighbors who have a long wait. Just a few words of kindness and encouragement could mean the difference between a vote being cast or thrown away.
To learn more and sign up, click below:
http://colorofchange.org/party08/?id=2263-598689
How to Start a Party at the Polls
You can do this while you're waiting in line yourself, you can come back after you've voted, or you can go to other polling places in your area where you hear there are long lines. Here are some ways you can make the wait easier and more fun for voters:
* Bring water, food, snacks. A lot of people might not have realized how long they'd have to wait. A little food and water can help give people the energy they need to power through. Cook something the night before, buy some bottled water to share. Healthy snacks are good, but you can also use the opportunity to get rid of extra Halloween candy.
* Bring some folding chairs. Some people may need a break from standing; you can give them somewhere to sit.
* Rain? Bring umbrellas, ponchos, plastic bags. Help people stay dry.
* Tell jokes, juggle, provide some other kind of entertainment. Are you a comedian, dancer, or street performer of some kind? Put on a show! Make sure it's family-friendly.
* Play some music or bring a boombox. Play an instrument? Bring it to the polls and play some songs. Bring a boombox. Take requests. Avoid music that might be offensive or abrasive to some people. Keep in mind that not everyone may like your music, so pay attention to how people are reacting; you don't want to drive anyone away.
* Be prepared to cover up campaign t-shirts, buttons, etc. Some places have rules against campaigning within 100 feet of the polls. Wearing a t-shirt or button can be considered a form of campaigning, so if you're wearing gear from a particular candidate, be prepared to cover it up or change into different clothes if someone asks you to.
* Above all, have fun, and spread it around. Help everyone out, not just people supporting your candidate. This is about making sure everyone has the right to vote. Voters disagree on many issues, but we should all be able to agree that participation in our democracy is an exciting thing. Help bring a festive spirit to the polling place
.
Please let us know what you plan on doing, and read our tips for making sure we do this in a responsible and inclusive way. It just takes a minute:

Palin's Rising Star?
11.03.08 -- 4:08PM By Josh Marshall
I know there's a lot of talk in Republican circles that Sarah Palin is going to be the star, the new face of the GOP in the post-Bush, post-McCain era. And this speculation has been goosed by Palin's own hints that it's full speed ahead with Palinism on the national stage if she and McCain fall short on Tuesday. But for me the whole idea has never really added up. I'm certainly not the target audience. But my own sense is that Palin's appeal is uniquely and paradoxically tied to the dynamics of this particular election -- an election in which Republicans are expecting, rightly or wrongly, to be beaten decisively and the most aggrieved are uniquely drawn to Palin's bright eyed and unapologetic appeal to resentment and victimology.
As I think Noam Scheiber said a week or two ago, Palin is the first Republican presidential or vice-presidential since Richard Nixon to so genuinely appeal to the politics of resentment. Sure, the Bushes and McCain have played to it. But either economically or socially or both, these men were all to-the-manor-born -- elites who've lived their whole lives on greased rails.
To use a different analogy I think Palin (and perhaps Joe the Plumber too) appeal to the brainstem of conservatism, where the most primitive and persistent impulses are registered, even as the areas of higher reasoning and cognition (frontal lobes and all that) are flat-lining or tracking into oblivion.
Even a week or so back a poll of Republicans found that Palin came in third behind Romney and Huckabee in their choice for a 2012 nominee.
The conventional wisdom seems to be that only the conservative 'intellectuals' have a beef with Palin. But I'm pretty sure the post-election view is going to seem very different. The chatter out of the McCain campaign only confirms what her two months on the public stage has made painfully clear. Palin wasn't simply unprepared for intense scrutiny of a national campaign. The woman is an ignoramus of almost unprecedented magnitude in the annals of national politics. It's not just that virtually every-non-Republican has a negative view of her. I just don't see a national party getting behind someone like that. And before you snark, "What about George Bush?" Sorry but there's no comparison. Whatever else I think of him, he's not a moron. And while he appears to be astoundingly incurious, there's simply no comparison to Palin.
I guess I could imagine a rump Republican party nominating Palin. It could be Palin with perhaps Mark Levin as veep to nail down the all important angry, middle-aged DC Jewish male, right-wing ravanchist vote and Joe the Plumber to run her Phalangist paramilitary. But my strong hunch is that if McCain loses tomorrow that will be the end of Sarah Palin's national political career even if there are some persistent twitches and jerks over the coming months.

The second Trooper-gate report is due out in minutes!!!
From Alaskan Daily News:
A report detailing whether Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power by firing public safety commissioner Walt Monegan will be released this afternoon.Anchorage attorney Timothy Petumenos, hired by the Alaska Personnel Board as an independent investigator, says he will release the report during a news conference starting at 3:30 p.m.
He said the report would cover Monegan's firing as well as a separate complaint from Anchorage activist Andree McLeod alleging that state hiring practices were circumvented for a Palin supporter.

TPM Track Composite: Obama
TPM Track Composite: Obama Approaching 52%
By Eric Kleefeld - November 3, 2008, 5:07PM
Here's our final daily composite of the six major national tracking polls. Many national polls have coalesced around a projected 52% popular-vote share for Barack Obama, and it shows in our composite:
• Gallup: Obama 53%, McCain 42%, with a ±2% margin of error, compared to a 52%-43% lead from yesterday.
• Rasmussen: Obama 52%, McCain 46%, with a ±2% margin of error, compared to a 51%-46% Obama lead from yesterday.
• ABC/Washington Post: Obama 53%, McCain 44%, with a ±2% margin of error, compared to a 54%-43% Obama lead yesterday
• Hotline/Diageo: Obama 50%, McCain 45%, with a ±3.3% margin of error, unchanged from yesterday.
• Research 2000: Obama 51%, McCain 45%, with a ±3% margin of error, compared to a 51%-44% Obama lead from yesterday.
• Zogby: Obama 51%, McCain 44%, with a ±2.9% margin of error, compared to a 50%-44% Obama lead from yesterday.
Adding these polls together and weighting them by the square roots of their sample sizes, Obama is ahead 51.9%-44.3%, a lead of 7.6 points, compared to the 51.5%-44.2% Obama lead from yesterday.
Counting today, Obama's lead has increased by small amounts in the last five consecutive Composites.
Most elections conclude with a tightening of the race, as the underdog picks up some final bit of steam. But this one seems to have been an exception -- McCain began closing the gap, but then Obama just pulled away all over again.
One more important poll is due tomorrow. We'll be live-blogging it when it comes out.

Probe of 'troopergate'
Probe of 'troopergate' expands to other Palin complaints
http://www.centredaily.com/206/story/940582.html
Tom Kizzia- Anchorage Daily News
The state Personnel Board investigation of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of Walt Monegan has broadened to include other ethics complaints against the governor and examination of actions by other state employees, according to the independent counsel handling the case.
The investigator, Tim Petumenos, did not say who else is under scrutiny. But in two recent letters describing his inquiry, he cited the consolidation of complaints and the involvement of other officials as a reason for not going along with Palin's request to make the examination of her activities more public.
Two other ethics complaints involving Palin are known. One, by activist Andree McLeod, alleges that state hiring practices were circumvented for a Palin supporter. The case is not related to Monegan's firing. The other, by the Public Safety Employees Association, alleges that trooper Mike Wooten's personnel file was illegally breached by state officials.
John Cyr, the PSEA executive director, said Monday the union plans to amend its complaint to be sure the board investigates "harassment" of Wooten as well.
Petumenos has not spoken to the press, in keeping with the secrecy of the state process. But he gave a rough description of the investigation's course in two letters to an Anchorage attorney threatening a lawsuit over Palin's effort to waive confidentiality.
Attention is turning this week to the Personnel Board -- the state's official avenue for investigating ethics complaints -- after release of the Legislature's Troopergate investigation last Friday. The Legislature's investigator concluded that Palin was within her rights to fire Monegan as public safety commissioner, but abused her power and broke the ethics law in joining her husband to push for the firing of Wooten, who was once married to the governor's sister.
Palin reversed an earlier pledge and refused to cooperate with the Legislature's investigation, calling it politically biased. In an unusual twist, she filed the ethics complaint against herself before the board, saying she hoped to "clear the air" by an inquiry through proper channels. She asked the board to decide if she broke ethics laws or acted improperly in dismissing Monegan or in dealing with Wooten -- basically the same ground Branchflower covered.
Petumenos has requested a copy of Friday's legislative report, including confidential backup material, said Sen. Kim Elton, D-Juneau, chairman of the Legislative Council. Elton said the council will meet Thursday to vote on whether to give Petumenos all the material gathered by its investigator, Steve Branchflower.
Petumenos was hired by the Personnel Board to handle the case because the state attorney general's office, which normally investigates ethics charges, would have a conflict investigating the governor.
Under the state's inscrutable system for investigating official ethics complaints, there's no way to tell how long Petumenos' investigation might take. The Personnel Board, made up of three gubernatorial appointees, has meetings scheduled for Oct. 20 and Nov. 3. Agendas for those meetings mention confidential ethics matters to be handled in executive session.
Nor is there any certainty, if the complaints are settled or dismissed, that the results of the investigation will ever be made public. A review of recent Personnel Board cases, however, suggests it's likely most information will eventually be released.
Palin has been involved in Personnel Board investigations before -- though not as a subject of complaint -- and at the time complained about their secrecy.
In high-profile cases that established her statewide reputation as an ethics reformer, Palin helped with a 2003 investigation of Republican Party chairman Randy Ruedrich, who was working on a state oil regulatory panel, and she co-filed a complaint in 2004 against then-attorney general Gregg Renkes.
Both men were found by investigators to have crossed ethical lines. Details of the investigations were released in the end, as part of a settlement that stopped short of the full public hearing before an administrative law judge that the law requires in serious cases.
In the Ruedrich case, Palin resigned her state job in protest while the investigation was still secret, saying she felt implicated in a cover-up because of the shroud.
"I'd like to find a hero in the Legislature who can take on and change that law and make it more sensible," Palin said at the time she resigned. As governor, she has supported changes to ethics laws, but the secrecy of board investigations has not been changed.
Palin fired Monegan in July and the legislative inquiry began later that month.
Four days after her Aug. 29 selection as John McCain's Republican vice presidential candidate, Palin's lawyer filed an official ethics complaint over the Monegan affair with the Personnel Board, urging the Legislature to give way. The Legislature refused, creating parallel investigations.
Judging from Petumenos' letters on the case, he feels able to range as broadly as Branchflower into subjects related to the original ethics complaints.
One element will distinguish the Personnel Board inquiry: It will have Palin's cooperation.
Sarah and Todd Palin have agreed to be interviewed by Petumenos at the end of next week, said Meg Stapleton, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign. She said Monday she has no other details of the arrangement.

Magnetic Portals Connect Sun And Earth
Magnetic Portals Connect Sun And Earth
ScienceDaily (Nov. 2, 2008) — During the time it takes you to read this article, something will happen high overhead that until recently many scientists didn't believe in. A magnetic portal will open, linking Earth to the sun 93 million miles away. Tons of high-energy particles may flow through the opening before it closes again, around the time you reach the end of the page.
"It's called a flux transfer event or 'FTE,'" says space physicist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Ten years ago I was pretty sure they didn't exist, but now the evidence is incontrovertible."
Indeed, today Sibeck is telling an international assembly of space physicists at the 2008 Plasma Workshop in Huntsville, Alabama, that FTEs are not just common, but possibly twice as common as anyone had ever imagined.
Researchers have long known that the Earth and sun must be connected. Earth's magnetosphere (the magnetic bubble that surrounds our planet) is filled with particles from the sun that arrive via the solar wind and penetrate the planet's magnetic defenses. They enter by following magnetic field lines that can be traced from terra firma all the way back to the sun's atmosphere.
"We used to think the connection was permanent and that solar wind could trickle into the near-Earth environment anytime the wind was active," says Sibeck. "We were wrong. The connections are not steady at all. They are often brief, bursty and very dynamic."
Several speakers at the Workshop have outlined how FTEs form: On the dayside of Earth (the side closest to the sun), Earth's magnetic field presses against the sun's magnetic field. Approximately every eight minutes, the two fields briefly merge or "reconnect," forming a portal through which particles can flow. The portal takes the form of a magnetic cylinder about as wide as Earth. The European Space Agency's fleet of four Cluster spacecraft and NASA's five THEMIS probes have flown through and surrounded these cylinders, measuring their dimensions and sensing the particles that shoot through. "They're real," says Sibeck...

The Troopergate report suggests how Sarah Palin would govern the US: by abusing her power to settle personal grudges
When I was in Alaska last month, several people told me they were afraid to speak about Sarah Palin on the record, lest they invite retaliation from the governor's office or, God forbid, from the next vice-president. At the time, I didn't take such worries too seriously. As abominable a candidate as Palin is, it was hard for me to imagine vice-presidential staffers trying ruin the lives of private Wasilla citizens just because they had displeased her. But reading the official report of the investigation into the Palin abuse-of-power scandal known as Troopergate, it seems that perhaps her critics were being more prudent than paranoid.
As scandals go, Troopergate is absurdly picayune. According to the report, released Friday by the bipartisan legislative council that authorised the investigation, Palin and her husband tried to use their political power to have her sister's ex-husband, state trooper Michael Wooten, fired from his job and investigated for workers compensation fraud. They also pressed authorities to prosecute him for a moose shooting that was unlawful because of a technicality (the permit had been issued to his then-wife, who was with him at the time, rather than to Wooten, who pulled the trigger). The governor then fired Walt Monegan, the public safety commissioner, because he refused to get rid of Wooten, something he could not legally have done. This stuff is so ridiculously small it seems silly to even be writing about it, especially at time of multiplying global emergencies.
Yet given that there is still a chance - albeit a diminishing one - that Palin could soon be in a position of national political power, it's worth looking at how she has exercised power in the past. As a window into how Palin might rule, Troopergate's very pettiness is what makes it so troubling. We're used to politicians who do favours for campaign contributors, who are too cozy with lobbyists and who resort to underhanded tactics against political foes. What we are not used to are politicians who use their offices to intervene in family quarrels and punish their relatives' personal enemies. For the last eight years, we've suffered under an administration that sees no difference between politics and governing. Palin is something arguably worse, a person who sees no difference between her private life and her public duties. Even Dick Cheney, after all, hasn't used his office to torment disfavoured former in-laws.
Though Palin claims the report has exonerated her, that's an outright lie. It is true that it concluded that she was within her rights to fire Monegan, since the governor is allowed to replace department heads without cause. But it also found that Palin "abused her power" by violating the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act, which holds that any "effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action" is a violation of the public trust.
More interesting than the report's conclusion, though, are its pitiful little details. There are endless haranguing phone calls to people throughout the bureaucracy demanding action against Wooten, even after the Palins are warned that their actions could get them in legal trouble. There are scenes of Todd Palin, who apparently spent a great deal of time working in no official capacity out of his wife's office, presenting Monegan with dirt on Wooten unearthed by a private investigator. We see Todd trying to bust his ex-brother-in- law for dropping his kids off at school and then at church in a patrol car (both times, it turns out Wooten had permission to use the vehicle for personal business). We learn that the judge presiding over Wooten's divorce from Palin's sister weighed the Palin family's vendetta against him in splitting up their assets, ruling that Wooten is likely to earn less in the future because his ex-wife's family "have decided to take off with the guy's livelihood".
This is not, of course, the only case in which Palin has behaved like Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf, mobilising her minions against those who've fallen from her good graces. One of the people enlisted against Wooten was Palin's legislative director John Bitney, a friend of hers since junior high school. Bitney later angered Palin by having an affair with Debbie Richter, who at the time was separated from Todd Palin's best friend. He was summarily fired. (Debbie Richter has since become Debbie Bitney).
All this is, of course, pretty trivial stuff. But how terrifying to think of a vice-president - or a president - wielding the power of her office to settle such personal grudges. The Bush administration has famously been described as the reign of the Mayberry Machiavellis. Palin promises something tawdrier still. Again, bad prime-time soap operas offer the best analogy. Could America survive the rule of the Mayberry Carringtons?

Josh Marshall's take on Joe the Plumber is spot on. But it is worth remembering that he represents a fake demographic: plumbers that make over $250,000. There were reports following the last debate the Joe actually makes around $42,000 or so. Note that he needs to make SIX times that income to qualify for Obama's proposed tax increase. He claimed he wanted to buy a business that would make $280,000. But that is just a pipe dream (pun intended). He would like to make 6-7 times the income he now does. But there is no indication he ever will do so. After all, he doesn't even have a plumber's license, which presumably he will need to go into business for himself.
I don't mind him taking advantage of his media opportunity, but he represents a demographic that does not exist. He is not part of the "quarter-of-a-million-dollars-a-year" plumber's demographic. I suspect that there are some plumbing contractors who make that much; but I would be surprised if they get their hands dirty by the time they can achieve this. And a contractor or builder is a very different demographic than he is representing.
So, not only does he appear to be a skinhead, but he is a fabricator. This is entirely appropriate for the McCain campaign, where EVERYTHING is made up.
The McCain campaign is truly reprehensible. Once this campaign is over, President Obama might well forgive him; but we don't have to. We can keep active, keep organized, and call McCain out for the repulsive campagin he waged. And keep at it. And keep at it. And do it again. So that such disrespectible tactics have consequences, and are less likely to happen again.

Heartless bastards. The California Republican Party filed an FEC complaint against Barack Obama today for visiting his dying grandmother -- just hours before his grandmother died. BarbinMD at DailyKos has the details in a post aptly titled, "This Is What Desperation Smells Like." The Republicans are somehow alleging Obama that a presidential candidate using the campaign plane to fly to one of the 50 states is a violation of the law. They're sick. Really, they're sick.
You know, maybe the GOPers don't actually know that Hawaii is a state. They just know about Alaska. Remember all the talk from idiots like Cokie Roberts that Hawaii was "exotic."
Anyway, this is what we get from the GOP. Heartless bastards. Any political attack is acceptable. No wonder this country is such a mess after years of GOP rule. This action says everything you need to know about the Republicans. And, this is another reason why the GOP must be crushed, just crushed, tomorrow.
Soon enough, Obama will be flying on Air Force One. That's pretty sweet revenge, too.

Alice. did you catch SNL's
Alice. did you catch SNL's Countdown parody?
what did you think of the part about Miss Precius Perfect?
And now as promised, a special comment. The letter was brief and to the point. "Dear Mr. Olbermann," it read. "The co-op board, having reviewed your request for an exception to its 'no pets' policy in order to accommodate your cat, Miss Precious Perfect, regretfully concludes that in consideration of the rights of the other co-op residents, such an exception is not possible at this time. Sincerely Richard Lieberstein, co-op president."
And there it was. All perfectly legal. Like the 1942 internment of more than 100,000 Japanese American citizens. Or the forced relocation of the Cherokee on the trail of tears. Or the monstrous injustice of our nation's Jim Crow laws. It was all perfectly legal, and every bit as wrong. If not indeed more so! Mr. Lieberstein, you speak of considerations of the rights of others. How dare you, sir? How dare you? Where, sir, in any of this were the rights of Miss Precious Perfect considered? Damn you Mr. Lieberstein, damn you to hell! No, Mr. Lieberstein -- your decision is not based on consideration but on fear. Fear of the carpets stained, of deliverymen clawed, of kitty litter, boxes tipped over, of hairballs coughed up! We have seen this fear before in Cambodia under Pol Pot. In Russia under Stalin. In Massachusetts under Mitt Romney. It is the fear, sir, and the tyranny up with which we dare no longer put. I pray thee, sir, let us have done with it. And what of the building's other residents? The Donnellys in 7a. The Gaspens in 4b. The gay guys in the garden apartment. Their silence is deafening. See they not that horror to which the Liebersteins have so willingly blinded themselves? This, sir, is a genocide! A feline genocide. And so the verdict is rendered, there is no appeal. Miss Precious Perfect, my mother and I, shall find another apartment. For me, the financial damage is negligible. For Miss Precious Perfect, the psychological damage, incalculable. Still, one imperative remains. Mr. Lieberstein, sir, if you yet retain any trace of honor, you must at once resign as president of this co-op, indeed, sir, justice and decency demands you so to do! Good night. Good luck.

As for what we will witness tomorrow night:
* Expect the theft of a landslide victory in the presidential race. The announced results may still be convincing. But those results will not show the same level of mandate that the people voted for.
* Be prepared for the possibility of a contested presidential election. McCain continues to insist, all evidence to the contrary, that he can win tomorrow.
* Expect the theft of at least one, potentially many, U.S. Senate and House seats.
Under any of these outcomes, democracy is denied. We must be ready. We must be organized.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR TOMORROW
At No More Stolen Elections!, we will be looking for, and reporting back to you, specific voting rights violations:
* Vote suppression in the form of voter intimidation and polling place, ballot, poll worker, and machine shortages.
* Voting machine problems involving vote flipping and denied recounts.
* Exit poll manipulation and the possibility of a concerted effort to force the winning candidate to concede.

McCain camp: "all examples of fraud" should be addressed
The McCain-Palin campaign released the following statement today:
"With the tomorrow's election, our Honest and Open Election hotline will serve as an informative guide for all Americans participating in the electoral process," said McCain-Palin National Political Director Mike DuHaime. "The hotline will allow us to learn about and take steps toward remedying any voter irregularities at polling places across the country. While we are hopeful that Election Day will be free of any wrongdoing, allies of the Democrat Party, such as ACORN, have shown a willingness to commit fraud in both this election cycle and in 2004. Given the tightness of the polls, all examples of fraud must be addressed to preserve the integrity of the election."
In 2004, multiple forms of voter fraud occurred, including voter intimidation, fraudulent registrations, multiple ballots cast and votes bought for money. Already during the 2008 election cycle, a dead woman in Missouri cast an absentee ballot, individuals were arrested for voting twice in Florida and people in Ohio registered and voted on the same day.

A police report obtained by NBC24 states that the patrol unit did not issue a citation to Wurzelbacher because it felt doing so would have "negative repercussions to the department and city as a whole".
...
The Ohio Attorney General's office has made an inquiry into why Wurzelbacher was not issued a citation since it was a legitimate traffic violation.

Early voting could go nationwide, experts say
The unexpected wave of millions of early voters casting ballots for Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama may prompt Congress to mandate some form of early voting nationwide for future elections, experts say.
So far, more than 24.4 million voters have cast ballots in states where early voting is allowed, providing convenience for voters and, in theory, rescuing poll workers from an overwhelming turnout on Tuesday. This historic election is expected to fuel congressional support for a law that allows voters to cast early ballots without providing an excuse, said the director of the nonpartisan Early Voting Institute, professor Paul Gronke.
In many states that require a reason for early voting, mail-in voters must provide election officials with a formal excuse explaining why they cannot vote on Election Day. They often must obtain signatures from notaries or physicians before they can be granted a ballot.
"It is almost certain that after the election there will be legislation proposed in the next session of Congress that will mandate no-excuse absentee balloting nationwide," said Gronke. "This will especially be the case if Democrats take the White House."

Voter information dumped on side of Fla. highway
Highway workers found voter information scattered on the side of Interstate 4 this morning in Tampa, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
The documents, which filled nine garbage bags, "carried an alphabetical listing of Tampa residents, their party affiliations, age, sex, home address, and sometimes phone numbers," the paper says. "Each entry includes a check boxes to mark whether each person supports John McCain or Barack Obama, whether they voted and whether they need a ride to the polls on Election Day."
Local election officials say the documents are based on public information. "They're not our papers," Mia McCormick, a spokeswoman for the county elections office, tells The Tampa Tribune. "Sometimes candidates request this information for campaign surveys. But we don't know whose they are."
Officials say the documents will probably be destroyed.

The documents found today on I-4 appear to be survey results but remain unclaimed. The elections office says the information in the documents is public record.

no maggiesboy, that's in city park, there's a stretch of land
that looks quite wild but it's right in the middle of the city - as to the catfish, yes probably, occasionally i have seen people fish there, people letting their dogs run unleashed (or swim), young couples picnicking, but most of the time it's very quiet, it really feels like being in some remote place, I think not many people know about it, known to just a few who don't wanna talk about it too much so they can have it to themselves for as long as possible -

Hillary Clinton at UMD today to campaign for Franken
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is back in Minnesota today with the goal of adding Al Franken as a colleague and nudging the Democrats toward that magic total of 60 seats in the Senate.
Clinton, the former First Lady who pushed to the very end in her campaign for the Democratic nomination for president, is scheduled to appear on Franken's behalf at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
The rally to get out the vote for Franken and Barack Obama, her party's choice for president, is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Romano Gym. The doors open at 3:45 p.m., and no tickets are required.
A Franken victory over GOP incumbent Norm Coleman is seen as vital to the Democrats' drive to control 60 seats in the Senate, a total that would give the party a better chance of thwarting filibusters.

Mon Nov 3rd, 2008 at 03:14:42 PM EST
Here's my Top Ten list of Republicans I'd like to see lose tomorrow (that have at least a reasonable shot of being defeated):
1. John McCain- because that means we get President Obama!!
2. Rep. Virgil Goode (VA-05)- because of his histrionic anti-Muslim bashing.
3. Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia- because of his campaign against Max Cleland in 2002 and his view of black people as 'the other guys'.
4. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky- for being a total corporate tool and because he's the leader of the obstructionist Senate Republicans.
5. Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN-06)- because she wants the FBI to interrogate Democrats for signs of anti-Americanism. Because she's a hero of the loony religious right.
6. Sen. Liddy Dole- for running an ad that falsely accused her opponent of atheism.
7. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (CO-04)- for her over-the-top gay-bashing.
8. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska- because he's a convicted felon. Because I am very excited about the job Mark Begich will do in the Senate.
9. Rep. Steve King (IA-05)- because he's a frothing-at-the-mouth lunatic and because his opponent Ron Hubler would be an awesome progressive replacement.
10. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15)- because his opponent Sam Bennett and I had a great time together in Austin, and I'd like to have a friend in Congress.

Have to be at the polling place at 5 AM. Lots still to do tonight and I have to set an alarm for 3:30AM
I'm intrigued to know how many people will vote at our poll tomorrow. I wish I had the amount from the 2004 election for our polling place to compare.
The election commission said they may approve a later close subject to the lines we have. If it's really bad, I may not get home until Wednesday!

Rules for polling place
No newspapers, TVs, radios, laptops, cameras. No wearing political clothing, buttons, logos, etc.
If someone tries to come in with apolitical t-shirt, they may not be admitted to the polling place.
We are not to ask for an ID if the voter's name is on our list. If they aren't on the list, we have another place to look which is our little blackberry that we can use to go to the election commission's list of voters to make sure they are at the right polling place.
We have the voter sign below thier signature that was copied onto our form and the only time we ask for IDs is if their sig doesn't match or their file copy is flagged.

I've been an election judge for many years now. I missed the primary this past year because of my knee but I've been doing it for awhile.
They're going to be needing more election judges in the future. With early voting and more voters, election judges will be at a premium.
tonid I would have liked to do it too
but only found out too late - they were giving classes, certifications and hiring poll workers, last saturday - by the time i read about it in the paper they were done with their search
they had many openings in preparation for large turnout and paying $200 for the day - not too bad for interesting work
i was sorry for the missed chance - I will have to keep my eyes open for the next time (2012)

Is John McCain the Second
Is John McCain the Second Coming of Christ?

Meg Favreau | Bio
On the eve of an election so important that it will physically force the Hale-Bopp comet to once again pass by the Earth, I worry about the information people will have when they go to the polls. This campaign season, there has been too much misdirection and not enough facts. This is why I want you to consider one important question before casting your vote: Is John McCain the second coming of Jesus Christ?
Think about it. Both have suffered great torture. Both have had friends who have betrayed them (Judas, Colin Powell). And both are deeply loved by the elderly.
But that's not all. John McCain is against gay marriage and abortion, and in the Bible, didn't Jesus say "I am against gay marriage and abortion?" (not a direct quote). And where Jesus magically turned water into wine, John McCain magically turned himself from someone who was kind of hated by Republicans into a Republican-loved guy who uses an unlicensed plumber as a campaign mascot.
Moreover, if we're talking about mavericks, Jesus was the original maverick--rallying against the system to bring a totally new religion to the people. John McCain is kind of like that in how he will bring a new sense of hatred and depression to many of the American people if he wins.
So when you go to the polls tomorrow, just remember this one plain fact: John McCain is Jesus Christ

A Letter for McCain
A Letter for McCain Supporters' Eyes Only
http://www.236.com/blog/w/adam_mckay/a_letter_for_mccain_supporters_1000...
If you're voting for McCain and you've clicked to read this I promise this will be pain free and fast. First off, I respect you for voting tomorrow. Right away you've set yourself above the apathetic millions and clearly you care about this country.
Before you punch, click or fill in your ballot for John McCain I would like to have a small one sided non-argumentative conversation with you as a person who also cares whether this country continues to grow and flourish or not.
If you're not going to vote for Barack Obama because of the emails and rumors that he is a terrorist or hangs out with criminals or is a Muslim please do not let that be the reason.
This begs the first question: why in the hell should you listen to me? Well my answer would be, why not? I have no tax breaks or corporate interests to be supported by Barack Obama. In fact, as someone who makes over 250k a year I will pay more. So why would I lie or shill for him unless I truly believed he is the right choice?
And remember, there were a lot of us who said very early on that Bush was up to no good and that the Iraq war would be a mistake. If you voted for Bush in the past why not at least listen to another point of view? If you're one of the twenty something percent who still think Bush has done a good job then I'm guessing you aren't reading this anyway.
The bottom line is that I believe no one wants a bad leader on purpose so clearly you were given some bum information if you voted for Bush. That's okay. You were doing the best you could. But don't rely on that very same information all over again. Whether it be FOX news, emails or friends or family.
Which brings me back to the rumors and emails about Obama. They are false. Not only are they false, they're crazy false. They are. And it would be a tragedy for anyone to make a decision based on those kinds of dark ugly lies.
It's also possible you are voting for McCain because he is "pro-life." I ask you to please remember that there is not one person in this country who thinks abortion is a "good" thing. The only reason any of us think that it should be open as an option to women is because if it wasn't, then people would do it anyway and they be hurt and assaulted by creeps offering illegal abortions. That is literally the only reason. The way to stop abortion is to offer sex education and protection. For that reason there were fewer abortions during the Clinton administration then during the Bush tenure.
If by chance your religion is against protection or sex education then I ask you to question that stance and any group that resists educating kids about how easy it is to have a baby. After all, is there anything more precious than a baby? Nope.
I'm almost done. Stay with me (or stay against me but please keep reading).
If you are a person who is voting for McCain because you think Obama is a communist who wants to redistribute the wealth, I know you are smarter than that. Bush already gave obscene tax breaks to people like me and Warren Buffet and we are saying it's not fair. Why would we work against our own interests? The answer is simple: because fair taxation makes the whole country stronger and if the country isn't strong our money ends up disappearing anyway (see massive stock market crash currently in progress). Bush redistributed the wealth and McCain has been very clear that he will continue to give tax breaks to big corporations and the wealthy in the name of trickle down economics. He really truly has. It's a big fat fact.
I also know that from years of Corporatists and fundamentalists turning the word "liberal" into a code word for gays and hippies and commies you think that blue staters all want to corrupt our country and have people marrying dogs and smoking crack and burning Christmas trees. Here's the real truth we're pretty much just like you. We really, truly are.
And finally if you are not voting for Barack because of the color of his skin, then there may be nothing I can say to you. But I just ask that you really consider this decision. Can anything good come of a backward way of thinking like judging someone based on skin color? No way. And I think in your heart of hearts you know that is very true. The world is changing and if we think and act like it's the 1600s then America will slip hard.
That's it. Thank you for reading. Now let's send a message to the world and our children that the United States learns from it's mistakes and can change when necessary. Remember, you're alone in that voting booth. You don't have to tell your McCain loving friends who you voted for. And chances are one or two of them will secretly vote for Obama. And as a reward for reading this a 30% off coupon for Dave & Busters is being sent to your home.

This is a very important ruling. It may stop suits of drug co's
Court weighs amputee's case, limits on drug suits
By Joan Biskupic, USA TODAY
Supreme Court justices struggled Monday with when people hurt by federally approved drugs may sue for their injuries in state courts.
At its broadest, the case could lead to a sea-change in how manufacturers are held accountable when something goes wrong with a prescription drug because of inadequate labeling.
Yet, arguments Monday suggested the justices could also end up with a narrow decision based on the specific facts of the dispute brought by a woman whose arm had to be amputated after a drug was wrongly administered and she developed gangrene.
Diana Levine won a $6.7 million jury award against drug maker Wyeth. It was upheld by the Vermont Supreme Court.
The question before the justices was when drug labels that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration can be targeted in state product-liability lawsuits.
The case could come down to whether the FDA specifically had considered and rejected a revised label for Wyeth's anti-nausea drug Phenergan that would have prevented its mis-use.
Numerous outside groups have lined up on the two sides of the case in anticipation of a broad ruling that would dramatically affect state remedies for personal injuries.
The National Conference of State Legislatures, siding with Levine, warned the court of the high social costs to states of injured and uninsured people with no recourse in state courts for damages from manufacturers.
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, siding with Wyeth, countered that the threat of liability under myriad state laws can drive beneficial drugs off the market and discourage the development of new ones.
A majority of the justices did not tip their hand during the hour of oral arguments. Many suggested a key question may be how the FDA had handled any attempt by Wyeth to change its label to made clear the dangers from the particular administration used on Levine.
Levine had gone to a Vermont Clinic in 2000 to be treated for a migraine headache. The Phenergan was inadvertently injected into an artery, rather than a vein, and caused immediate gangrene.
Levine sued Wyeth under Vermont laws related to manufacturer negligence and failure to warn about dangerous side effects.
She said the intravenous "push" method used to inject the drug directly into her arm significantly increased the risks of arterial exposure to the Phenergan. Vermont courts said Wyeth should have warned of the greater risks of IV-push administration of Phenergan so clinicians would not use that method. (Levine separately settled a case with the clinic.)
In the company's appeal Monday, Wyeth's lawyer Seth Waxman said labeling claims are the domain of the FDA, which has the authority to determine what should be on a label. He said Wyeth had sought to change the drug's label but was turned down by the FDA.
Waxman emphasized that the agency has comprehensive authority to determine the benefits and risks associated with drugs and their labeling language.
Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Antonin Scalia appeared most open to arguments that would limit state authority for such product-liability cases.
Scalia suggested that the Phenergan label might already have provided sufficient warning about methods and that allowing states to add more requirements could "make a mush out" of product-liability policy faced by manufacturers.
Levine's lawyer, David Frederick, argued that the FDA had never specifically reviewed whether a new warning related to the so-called IV-push method should be on the label.
Justices David Souter and Ruth Bader Ginsburg seemed most sympathetic to his arguments. Ginsburg expressed doubts that the FDA would have rejected a stronger label warning for a method shown to cause gangrene.
In Frederick's written filing he noted that, "For more than a century, patients injured by dangerous drugs have successfully brought state-law failure-to-warn claims against drug manufacturers."
He said the FDA had regarded such state claims as a complement to federal regulatory efforts until the Bush administration changed the policy in 2002.

The Miss Precious Perfect Thing:
Good night. Good luck.

Martin Luther King, excerpt from 5/17/57
"Give Us the Ballot," Address Delivered at the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom, Washington, D.C.
Give us the ballot, and we will no longer have to worry the federal government about our basic rights.
Give us the ballot (Yes), and we will no longer plead to the federal government for passage of an anti-lynching law; we will by the power of our vote write the law on the statute books of the South (All right) and bring an end to the dastardly acts of the hooded perpetrators of violence.
Give us the ballot (Give us the ballot), and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs (Yeah) into the calculated good deeds of orderly citizens.
Give us the ballot (Give us the ballot), and we will fill our legislative halls with men of goodwill (All right now) and send to the sacred halls of Congress men who will not sign a "Southern Manifesto" because of their devotion to the manifesto of justice. (Tell 'em about it)
Give us the ballot (Yeah), and we will place judges on the benches of the South who will do justly and love mercy (Yeah), and we will place at the head of the southern states governors who will, who have felt not only the tang of the human, but the glow of the Divine.
Give us the ballot (Yes), and we will quietly and nonviolently, without rancor or bitterness, implement the Supreme Court's decision of May seventeenth, 1954. (That's right)

David Sedaris hadda bit in the New Yorker 'bout that peculiar brand of fatuous "it's-really-all-about-me-you-know?" navel-gazer what is knowed as the "undecided voter". You can look it up if yer innerested in what he said, cuz it's easier for me to relate the (his) upshot inna joke format:

So the undecided voter mulled his options real earnest-like, as were his wont to do, then w/his customary gravity 'n caution, he axed:

Obama wins in earliest vote in tiny Dixville, NH
DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. – Democrat Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch, N.H., where the nation's first Election Day votes were cast and counted early Tuesday.
Obama defeated John McCain 15-6. Independent Ralph Nader was also on the ballot, but received no votes.
The first voter, following tradition established in 1948, was picked ahead of the midnight voting and the rest of the town's 19 registered voters followed suit in Tuesday's first minutes.
Town Clerk Rick Erwin says the northern New Hampshire town is proud of its tradition, but says the most important thing is that the turnout represents 100 percent vote.

Volunteers remain committed to end
Candidates need them to reach out to voters
Chris Knowlton walks the streets of Wauwatosa armed with a map, campaign literature and a smile. He has one mission: help Barack Obama become the next president of the United States.
Karen Mueller spends much of her free time in a Waukesha strip mall, working the phones, sorting campaign fliers and training other volunteers. Her goal: help send John McCain to the White House.
The two are among the thousands of campaign volunteers in Wisconsin so committed to seeing their candidate win the presidency that they are willing to give up free time with their families, burn through vacation days and endure a constant stream of rejection from people who might not share their enthusiasm for their choice of candidate.
...
Volunteers for third-party candidates also got involved in pre-election efforts. Doug Freedman of Chicago drove 90 miles to the UWM campus to hand out fliers for his candidate, Gloria La Riva, who is on the ballot representing the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
It's important work, he said, though he might just be the only La Riva volunteer in the state.

Antelope's sex signal in the
Antelope's sex signal in the knee
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7707141.stm
To demonstrate their sexual prowess, peacocks spread their tail feathers, men flex their muscles and eland antelope, it seems, click their knees.
Scientists from the Zoological Society of London and the University of Copenhagen recorded the sounds of eland bulls in Kenya, Africa.
Reporting in the journal BMC Biology, the researchers say that the depth of the sound correlates to body size.
The tactic signals the bulls' fighting potential, establishing mating rights.
The sound is thought to be made as a tendon in the animals' legs slips over one of the leg bones, and can be heard from hundreds of metres away.
"The tendon in this case behaves like a string being plucked, and the frequency of the sound from a string correlates negatively with both its length and diameter," said Jakob Bro-Jorgensen.
That means that the sound signals how large - and thus how fighting fit - the antelopes are. The antelope can thus establish mating rights among each other while avoiding actual fights.
The unusual approach adds to the list of signals that are known in the animals to provide an indication of their status.
A fold of skin under their throats called the dewlap indicates age, and the darkness of their hair indicates levels of aggression.

who would have thought.....
that my home town in a red state (13% for GWB'04)... would feel like it really matters to this country... (as all do)....
Barack first came to Charlotte, NC in April to a little community college gym. About 5000 showed up and about 3000 got into the event. When I ended up close to what they call the rope line, I started to think about what I would say if I had that 5-10 second chance to have his attention at the end. Well, after working the line to my right, as he came to me, the only thing I was thinking was, 'I wish my wife, who was working two miles away, could be here with me'.
So what came out my mouth? As I shook hands, I paused to give him the chance to look at me to see if I had his attention. Then only three words came out....
Please Come Back!?! (I tore myself up on the waste of a chance).....
~~~~~~
So today.... the last day, we knew Barack was coming back to see us for the fourth time, but the venue was at the University which is 20 minutes north of the Charlotte campaign HQ office. Having been to his three other events here, I decided to stay at work at HQ, and not break the momentum of supplying all the volunteer canvassers with their materials. The event would have absorbed my day, and we had a lot more work to do preparing for our last GOTV day.
Well, when a canvasser we just sent out, came back in following our press guy (he had told him he might want to stick around), I could feel it coming. Barack was going to make the crowd of 25,000 wait in the rain while he took 20 minutes to stop off at CLT Campaign Central, and make a few calls and meet us all and say thanks, and to remind us: DON'T LET UP!!!
I guess "Please Come Back!?!" wasn't such a waste after all......
And being able to chat it up with Reggie Love for a couple minutes waiting for Barack to come my way was pretty damn cool... That man is freaking cool as ice....
I'm up and about to get ready for the polls today. Couldn't sleep well of course! And it's going to be a long ass day.
How McCain Could Win
Monday 03 November 2008
by: Greg Palast, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
It's November 5 and the nation is in shock. Media blame it on the "Bradley effect": Americans supposedly turned into Klansmen inside the voting booth, and Barack Obama turned up with 6 million votes less than calculated from the exit polls. Florida came in for McCain and so did Indiana. Colorado, despite the Democrats' Rocky Mountain high after the Denver convention, stayed surprisingly Red. New Mexico, a state where Anglos are a minority, went McCain by 300 votes, as did Virginia.
That's the nightmare. Here's the cold reality.
how long did you wait: 8 years
i got to the polls 20 minutes before they opened and was number 18 for my precinct. the verification process takes about 45 seconds per person and we had 5 booths. with a 3 page ballot it takes several minutes to ink in your choices and then feed it thru the scanner. by the time i was leaving the line was easily 100 people long.
it was impossible to tell from peoples demeanor who they were voting for and nobody was saying except for one old curmudgeon who was voting for mcasshole.
How McCain Could Win
i read that and i'm at a loss to understand democratic complacency. the article says we've known about the vote purging and all the other republican dirty tricks but we have failed to mount an effective offense. is it obama's belief that the number of people voting for him will simply overwhelm the opposition and that he can suffer a 20% slippage?
------------
nobody, i haven't been able to figure out why your stance is so different in this election than it was in 2004. i know you don't like obama much, but is that all?
In Central Virginia
It was already over 50 degrees at 5:45 when I got in line. It was cloudy but not raining and it didn't look like it was gonna start anytime soon.
Pretty much since shortly after that, the line was consistently maybe 200 people. This is a largely Democratic precinct (racially mixed, mainly African-American and white) in a majority Democratic city.
Voters and election workers were handling things very efficiently. We had the option to vote on paper ballots that weren't provisional. No chads, just unambiguous forms with rectangles to fill in all the way. My neighbor informed people of that choice right when they came into the main room and I made sure to ask "These are not provisional?" and "They go in the machine like the old days and we can see them get counted?" They had a lots of paper-voting cubicles and about six machines (which could get hairy later). Maybe more ppl will be encouraged to vote on paper.
I gave them my collapseable chair that I don't use and then I hung "stay in line and exercise your right" signs for about an hour until they told me to go home.
There were about ten folks there when I left so they really didn't need me.
So, a very good experience. I wish I could average out some of the stress with the people who are getting a hard time, but I can't so I'll just enjoy it.
Oh yeah, and there was a tiny tiny card table for McCain with a plastic box of supplies with the lid still on, but when I left there was still no one there. (Well there was a guy in a sports jacket standing back against the wall looking very self-conscious.)
I really hate talking to strangers on the phone, because I used to have to do it for a living, but I might do it after work until (knock knock) it looks like a done deal.
The bar for Drinking Liberally is right down the street from the office. But that means nothing because I've got to study doncha know. Seriously, I can't stomach the price they want to charge you for cocktail in restaurants, especially with the gentrification here and all.
OT: I thought Bill Press (:-p) just called a male caller "bitch," but I think his name must have been Mitch or something.
