Joe the Plumber: No new taxes -- and no old ones, either

Joe the Plumber really is no fan of paying taxes.

According to records from the Lucas County (OH) Court of Common Pleas found by my colleague Avi Zenilman, Samuel J. Wurzelbacher has a lien placed against him to the tune of $1,182.92.

The lien is dated from January of '07.

Let's take a quick look at the impact Obama's entire economic plan would have on Joe's new plumbing business and see how Joe's opinion basically just makes him a greedy conservative asshole.

First off, Joe claims his new business will be generating $280,000. Let's assume for a second that is all profit (after paying his employees, paying for gas, etc.) The marginal tax rate for anything he makes over $250,000 will change from 36% to 39% under Obama's tax plan meaning he will pay an additional $900 on that extra $30,000.

One of McCain's points was that it would be more difficult for Joe to create jobs, however Obama has proposed a tax credit for any new jobs created for US citizens. However, this comment ignores the proposals Obama has made for tax credits to stimulate small businesses. Specifics are not available, however if the credit is anything like that proposed by Obama in the Patriot Employer Act the credit would be approximately $500 (I seem to remember a mention of the new credit being $3000, but I can't find a reference). So all in all, on Joe's shiny new $280,000 income, he'll be paying an additonal $400 at most in taxes.

To me, the only thing stopping him from creating new jobs is taking a 0.14% ($400) pay cut. That's what I call a greedy conservative asshole.

Wurzelbacher told the CBS Morning News that he feels like he’s being “used by the Republican Party as a pawn to make their point.” During a press conference this morning, “Joe the Plumber” answered some questions from the media. He said he was “bothered” by the fact that his name was invoked so many times. “To be honest with you, I’m sure Obama didn’t want my name mentioned,” he said. “I wish they had talked about, you know, more important issues.”

Meaning, he KNEW he was going to be used as a tool. We know it now. It's an admission.

In some cases I believe that he does know the facts. In most cases I don't believe that he has the intellectual horsepower to comprehend the many dots, let alone connect them.

John McCain did great tonight in the debate. But every time John mentioned “Joe the Plumber,” some of us in the campaign banged our heads against the wall. If Steve Schmidt had any hair left, I hear he would have been pulling it out tonight. He reportedly screamed at John’s debate prep team tonight (out of earshot of reporters, of course). “You idiots - he’s related to Charles Keating… of the Keating Five scandal!” They thought they had a real live Joe Six-Pack who’s spurned Barack Obama’s tax plan. But what they forgot to do was check on Joe Wurzelbacher’s background.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Federal home heating aid to states will nearly double this winter to $5.1 billion

The Bush administration on Thursday released $5.1 billion in fuel assistance to states, nearly doubling federal money to help poor people cope with high home heating bills expected this winter.

Despite oil price drops in recent months, lawmakers from cold weather states said high energy prices and the slumping economy are leaving many families struggling to pay to keep warm.

"The double whammy of rising costs and economic uncertainty is hitting local consumers hard," said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass. "With this increase in funding, hopefully no one in Massachusetts should have to make a heat-or-eat decision this winter."

About 2 million more families are expected to get fuel aid this winter, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors' Association, which represents state-run low-income energy assistance programs. About 5.8 million families got help last winter.

The extra money could enable states to increase benefit levels as well as help more people.

The Northeast, with its cold winters and reliance on oil heat, is particularly vulnerable to high energy costs.

Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said there has been a sharp increase in the number of families applying for aid in his state.

"More and more families in Connecticut and across the country are struggling to keep up with rising home heating costs," Dodd said. "These additional funds will go a long way toward helping the tens of thousands of senior citizens and low income families in our state fighting to stay warm this winter."

Home heating oil in Connecticut currently averages about $3.30 a gallon, an increase of nearly $1 per gallon since the beginning of 2007, said Rep. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. Connecticut families are expected to pay upwards of $3,000 for heating oil this winter, he said.

"Everywhere I go in this district, I hear from people who are concerned about how they are going to heat their homes and their businesses this winter," Murphy.

A senior law enforcement official confirmed the investigation to The Associated Press on Thursday. A second senior law enforcement official says the FBI was looking at results of recent raids on ACORN offices in several states for any evidence of a coordinated national scam.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Justice Department regulations forbid discussing ongoing investigations particularly so close to an election.

I wonder what the relationship between Samuel J. Wurzelbacher and Richard M. Wurzelbacher Jr. (the convicted son-in-law of Charles Keating) precisely is? Brothers? Son? Nephew?

BTW I found that Samuel “Joe” was actually living in Tucson, AZ back in the early 1990’s precisely when RM Jr. was going on trial there. After a nasty divorce (which involved his wife fleeing to a women’s shelter and obtaining medical help, the police involved, etc.) he went to Toledo. So there is a connection geographically as well to RM Jr.

It should be pointed out that both RM Jr. and Sr. were quite wealthy Republican contributors, as were their wives. Both have residential ties to both Ohio and Arizona, and also “Unknown, Alaska”.

Ironically, Samuel J. Wurzelbacher (Joe) IS registered to vote as a Republican…but somehow his name is misspelled as “Worzelbacher”. If the Republicans disqualify recent registrants in Ohio due to “errors” he may, in fact, be ruled ineligible to vote at all.

Returning to the Scene of the Crime
So now we hear leaked word that the FBI is beginning an investigation into whether ACORN "helped foster voter registration fraud around the nation before the presidential election" and where there is "any evidence of a coordinated national scam."

Let's note a few points. DC Republicans have been aggressively lobbying the DOJ to open an investigation into ACORN in advance of the election. And leaking word of such an investigation (possibly starting the investigation at all) most likely violates DOJ guidelines about DOJ/FBI actions which can end up interfering with or manipulating an election.

But, remember, this is right out of the book of the Bush Justice Department's efforts to assist in GOP voter suppression efforts in the 2004 and 2006 elections (part and parcel of the US Attorney firing story). This is the same scam US Attorney firing player Bradley Schlozman got in trouble for pulling with ACORN just before the 2006 election. And before he got canned, Gonzales helped revise and soften the departmental prohibition on DOJ announcements, thus making it easier to play these kinds of games.

This is a big deal. It may be their last gasp to use the DOJ to help mitigate the scale of Republican defeat on November 4th.

harsh new robocall (above) — at least the third in a series — attacks Obama for having "worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers" whose group "killed Americans."

Robocalls are a relatively inexpensive way to deliver a negative message, and used to be seen as an under-the-radar way to do it, though that's no longer really true. The ad comes just hours after McCain dismissed the issue: "I don't care about an old, washed-up terrorist," he said.

It seems that Joe, from Toledo, Ohio, is related to Robert Wurzelbacher, from Milford, Ohio. And who is Robert Wurzelbacher? He's the son-in-law of Charles Keating, and is now known as Robert the Felon, having been sentenced to 40 months in prison in 1993 for his role in the Keating Five (or the "McCain + 4") scandal. He was also, until he, uh, went away for a while, a huge donor to the Republican Party.

Attorney General Mike Cox today announced the arrest of Antonio Johnson, a former employee of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), on forgery charges after he falsely submitted State of Michigan voter registration forms to the City of Jackson.
Johnson, a convicted felon who is currently being held in Jackson County on a parole violation, is charged with falsifying six State of Michigan voter registration applications. The registrations were submitted through ACORN to City of Jackson Clerk Lynn Fessel. Johnson filled out, signed and submitted the six applications, using two Jackson residents' names without their permission or knowledge, between May 20, 2008 and June 2, 2008.

HOLLAND, Ohio - Joe the Plumber's story sprang a few leaks Thursday. Turns out that the man who was held up by John McCain as the typical, hard-working American taxpayer isn't really a licensed plumber. And court documents show he owes nearly $1,200 in back taxes.

"Joe," whose name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, was cited repeatedly in Wednesday night's final presidential debate by McCain for questioning Barack Obama's tax policy.

Wurzelbacher instantly became a media celebrity, fielding calls during the debate and facing reporters outside his home near Toledo on Thursday morning for an impromptu nationally televised news conference.

The burly, bald man acknowledged he doesn't have a plumber's license, but said he didn't need one because he works for someone else at a company that does residential work.

But Wurzelbacher still would need to be a licensed apprentice or journeyman to work in Toledo, and he's not, said David Golis, manager and residential building official for the Toledo Division of Building Inspection.

State and local records show Wurzelbacher has no license, although his employer does. Golis said there are no records of inspectors citing Wurzelbacher for unlicensed work in Toledo.

And then there was the matter of his taxes.

Wurzelbacher owes the state of Ohio $1,182.98 in personal income tax, according to Lucas County Court of Common Pleas records.

In January 2007, Ohio's Department of Taxation filed a claim on his property until he pays the debt, according to the records. The lien remains active.

The expert said that a business grossing $250,000 probably has many deductions, so Joe would not be "making" $250,000 and would not be in Obama's increased-tax group of earners.

However, if Joe pocketed $250,000 AFTER deductions, he would be subject to the Obama tax but it would be negligible (a few hundred bucks) compared to his increase in income from helper/employee to business owner.

As it turns out (this should not come as a surprise to anyone imagining the gross receipts generated by a sole-proprietor plumber and his helper), Joe's boss's business GROSSES $250,000 per year [this is Bait talking again because, well, a plumber with one helper does not clear $250,000 per year, trust me]. The $250,000 figure includes materials and coffee and gasoline and, presumably, septic tank pump-out subcontractors.

I doubt that Joe is a Republican plant. It is easier for me to believe that Joe is so unsophisticated as to confuse gross receipts with net income.

The wrap-up to the NPR report includes the comment that McCain picked the wrong guy to use as a weapon against Obama's tax proposals because Joe is one of the many struggling citizens who would receive a cut in his taxes.

Imagine that you form a group with the express purpose to register citizens to vote. Or imagine that your church group or your local Rotary club decides to register voters.

In most of the fifty states, your group is required to submit every completed registration form, even if it states that the applicant is Nosferatu and was born in 1312.

Why? Because most of the states in the union do not want you and your group to trash registration forms based on your assessment of their validity. It is not within your group's purview or range of responsibility to do the verification work for the state.

In other words, if you were not required to submit every completed registration form, then you and your group could toss the forms having applicant names like Nikeeshia Washington or Juan Santana or Barack Obama.

ACORN has stated repeatedly that they flag registration forms that appear to be less-than-legitimate as a courtesy to the authorities who must review the registration forms.

A few of the "authorities" have complained about the workload created when ACORN submits a batch of completed registration forms.

Tough shit. Registering to vote is a rock-solid right afforded the citizenry of this country. The "authorities" know the statistics as well as anyone does, so they should not be surprised that a huge theoretical workload exists if the non-registered citizenry suddenly decides to register to vote prior to an election that is well-known to be of great interest to the public.

You'll be glad to hear that while attendees at McCain/Palin rallies are hurling death threats at Barack Obama, the Secret Service is busy babysitting the media.

Yes. The Secret Service says it can't find the people in the crowd who keep calling for Barack Obama to be killed, and now we perhaps know why. Their agents are busy making sure that reporters don't leave their penned in areas and ask regular American citizens questions.

Now, how is it the Secret Service's job to play crowd control with reporters? Do they take sandwich orders too?

We know about this because Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank finally went public, and Huff Post caught it. Here's Milbank:

I wasn't at the Scranton event, but I have to say the Secret Service is in dangerous territory here. In cooperation with the Palin campaign, they've started preventing reporters from leaving the press section to interview people in the crowd. This is a serious violation of their duty -- protecting the protectee -- and gets into assisting with the political aspirations of the candidate. It also often makes it impossible for reporters to get into the crowd to question the people who say vulgar things. So they prevent reporters from getting near the people doing the shouting, then claim it's unfounded because the reporters can't get close enough to identify the person.

So, instead of maximizing the number of agents they have to catch people calling for the Democratic presidential candidate to be killed, the Secret Service is busy doing the political bidding of the McCain campaign. Putting aside the issue of why the media puts up with this - did we really have to hear about it as an off-hand comment in an online chat - why is the Secret Service putting up with this?

But look on the bright side, I hear the Secret Service does windows.

Seriously, why are we friends with these despots? They're now moving up the next OPEC meeting because they're distraught that oil prices have "dropped" to $67 a barrel.So they're going to meet to artificially prop up prices - OPEC would like the price to stay above $80, only four times what we paid years ago. Again, why are we friends with these corrupt, illegitimate regimes? We saved the Saudis' collective ass from Saddam Hussein in 1991. We let them off the hook after a group of their citizens decided to take down the World Trade Center and attack the Pentagon. We listened to their BS when only a few months ago they said the market must dictate prices. And now we're going to put up with this crap when we're on the verge of an international economic meltdown? Saudi Arabia isn't our friend. OPEC isn't our friends. It's time we realized that, and acted accordingly.

Oh, and Kuwait (whose ass we saved too) and Iraq are members of OPEC too. A lot of good that did us.

A female telecommunications lobbyist who became part of an explosive story early this year about John McCain has broken months of silence to deny the main subtext of the account — that she was suspected of being romantically involved with the Republican presidential candidate. "I did not have a sexual relationship with Senator McCain," Vicky Iseman told the National Journal magazine.

Um, something smells here. (Not to mention, why give a quote that sounds eerily like Bill Clinton during the Monica affair?)

Vicky Iseman has been missing for six months. She hasn't been in the news. Everyone has forgotten about her. She now appears, out of the blue, in a National Journal story, and gives an on-the-record interview denying, in quotes, that she had a "sexual relationship" with John McCain. Huh? That isn't something you just do out of the blue. You don't go public and give an interview about a possible sex scandal, less than three weeks before the election, after everyone has already forgotten about the sex scandal. It just doesn't make sense.

One more thing. National Journal says the interview took place last month. That's a nuance without a difference. If you're Vicky Iseman, you don't disappear since February - for seven months - only to reappear six weeks before your good buddy John McCain's election in order to remind everyone that you did not have sex with him. That's just absurd.

There are a few possibilities of the rat I'm smelling:

1. Perhaps Vicky Iseman wants to hurt John McCain, so she's going public right before the election to remind people of the possible affair. But this doesn't make sense, as, if she wanted to hurt McCain, she'd allege that she had an affair, she wouldn't deny it.

2. Perhaps someone is about to break a story proving that McCain and Iseman had a sexual relationship, and the McCain campaign asked Iseman to publicly deny it before the story comes out. This one seems plausible to me.

3. Perhaps, just as McCain had his staff say a few weeks ago that he had an affair 50 years ago with a hot Brazilian, McCain sees it in his political interests to have guys think he maybe, just maybe, he DID have an affair with a hot, blonde woman nearly half his age. Maybe, but that seems a bit extreme.

4. Perhaps this is another weird Hail Mary (hail Vicky?) attempt by McCain to change the conversation away from the economy? Talking about a sex scandal is better than talking about his age? I don't know, sounds weird, but then again, he is desperate.

I have to go with option two. It sounds like someone has the story, and the McCain people are trying to pre-empt. Iseman knows Washington. You don't go public on something like this less than three weeks before the election, not without a good reason.
