Who's in control of McCain's campaign?
John McCain’s campaign is pretty much a shambles right now.
If you don’t believe me, just listen to John McCain. His chief goal these days is calming down his crowds, not firing them up.
And that is an honorable thing to do. It may not be a winning thing to do. But it is honorable.
Sarah Palin, once seen as a huge plus to the ticket, is now increasingly emerging as a liability.
Forget that an independent legislative panel found Friday that she had abused her power and violated ethics laws as governor of Alaska. Forget that with the possibility of Palin being a heartbeat away from the presidency, McCain gives up the argument that his ticket represents experience and a steady hand on the tiller.
The real problem for McCain is that Palin is running a separate — and scary — campaign that does not seem to be under anybody’s control.
She storms around the country saying: “Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.”
She also says: “This is not a man who sees America as you see America and as I see America.”
Get the drift? Obama is not only different, not only an alien incapable of loving his country, he is an actual friend of terrorists who would attack America.
The great benefit of putting Palin on the ticket, we were told, is that it would excite the Republican base. Maybe it will. But the Republican base has never been smaller. And it is insufficient to carry the McCain-Palin ticket to victory.
To win, the Republican ticket must attract a significant number of independent voters, swing voters and even some Democrats. Do Sarah Palin’s attacks really help achieve that?
Her attacks certainly appeal to some. Cries of “traitor” and “terrorist” and “off with his head” are heard at Republican rallies when Obama’s name is mentioned.
And Palin is not the only one who is fear-mongering. Karen Tumulty of Time magazine was invited by the McCain campaign to visit its operations in Virginia on Saturday. So Tumulty was there when Virginia Republican Party Chairman Jeffrey M. Frederick “climbed atop a folding chair to give 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door their talking points — for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden.”
“Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon,” Frederick said. “That is scary.”
At Tumulty points out, “It is also not exactly true — though that distorted reference to Obama’s controversial association with William Ayers, a former ’60s radical, was enough to get the volunteers stoked. ‘And he won’t salute the flag,’ one woman added, repeating another myth about Obama. She was quickly topped by a man who called out, ‘We don’t even know where Sen. Obama was really born.’ Actually, we do; it’s Hawaii.”
(And, actually, John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, a location at least as exotic as Hawaii.)

Guard: We Didn't Torture McCain
John McCain’s claims that he was tortured while imprisoned in Vietnam are false, says the head guard at the prison where he was held. “On the contrary, we saved his life, curing him with extremely valuable medicines that at times were not available to our own wounded,” said the guard. He noted that conditions at the prison were “tough, though not inhuman,” the Guardian reports.
After his release, McCain said he had been beaten “from pillar to post” and that repeated torture made him suicidal and willing to confess to war crimes. His cellmate corroborated the torture claim. But McCain’s father was head of Navy operations in Vietnam, and the guard said he recognized the propaganda value of this. "I never lost him from sight,” he said. “I was frightened a doctor or nurse might do him harm."

McCain's economic plan....
McCain Proposes $52.5B Economic Plan
Republican Calls For Eliminating Taxes On Unemployment Checks, Lowering Taxes On Retirement Accounts And Capital Gains
(CBS/ AP) Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Tuesday proposed a $52.5 billion economic plan that would eliminate taxes on unemployment benefits and cut the capital gains tax while warning voters about taking a chance on Democratic rival Barack Obama.
"Perhaps never before in history have the American people been asked to risk so much based on so little," McCain told a suburban Philadelphia audience about his opponent.
McCain also promised that as president he would order the Treasury Department to guarantee 100 percent of all savings for six months.
The Arizona senator, who trails in the polls on economic issues, said, "The moment requires that government act. And as president I intend to act, quickly and decisively."
McCain said President Bush's $250 billion plan to buy shares in the nation's leading banks should be short-term and last only until the institutions are reformed and put on a sound footing again.
"When that is accomplished," McCain said, "government will relinquish its interest in these private companies. We're going to get the government out of the business of bailouts and equity stakes and back in the business of responsible regulation."
"Like the proposals offered by Obama yesterday, these are designed to help ease some of the economic pain being felt by various groups," said CBSNews.com senior political editor Vaughn Ververs. "The problem for McCain is that voters increasingly see Obama as better able to deal with the overall economic situation and piecemeal proposals aren’t likely to do anything to alter those perceptions. He has one more chance to make his case in tomorrow night’s final presidential debate."
More than 3.6 million Americans received unemployment benefits, according to the McCain campaign. If the government eliminated taxes on unemployment benefits, recipients would see an increase on average of nearly 10 percent, the campaign said.
McCain also called for cutting the tax rate on capital gains in half, down to 7.5 percent for two years. "This vital measure will promote buying, raise asset values, help companies and shore up the pension plans for workers and retirees," he said.

Poll: Obama maintains 9-point edge in Colorado
The most recent presidential debate did not change Colorado's mind.
A Quinnipiac University telephone poll shows Democrat Barack Obama maintained his margin over Republican John McCain among Colorado voters after their Oct. 7 debate.
The poll of about 1,000 randomly selected likely voters taken before and after the debate showed Obama with 52 percent of the vote and McCain with 43 percent of the vote.
Obama widened his lead to 11 points among independent voters, the largest bloc in Colorado. Independent voters also said Obama won the debate by a 3-to-1 margin.
A narrow majority of both male and female voters said Alaska's Republican Gov. Sarah Palin is unqualified to be vice president.
The poll indicated that women were slightly more likely than men to doubt her qualifications, 52 percent to 51 percent.

Even Repubs afraid of Palin ...
GOP strategist: McCain ‘put the country at risk’ by picking Palin.
Ari Melber and Sam Stein both report that at today’s TimeWarner media summit, GOP strategist Matthew Dowd sharply criticized Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) pick of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his running mate:
“They didn’t allow John McCain to pick the person he wanted for Vice President,” Dowd said, referring to Sen. Joe Lieberman, which undercut his experience argument and tethered McCain to the GOP base.
“He knows in his gut he put somebody unqualified on the ballot,” Dowd stressed, “and put the country at risk.”
Dowd joins a growing list of conservatives critical of Palin.

‘Axis Of Evil’ Author
‘Axis Of Evil’ Author Compares Rachel Maddow To Racist Hecklers
Last night on MSNBC, Rachel Maddow hosted David Frum, former speechwriter to President Bush, to discuss the increasingly nasty — and sometimes racist — tone among some of the attendees at McCain-Palin rallies. Frum has been openly critical of the McCain campaign, and Maddow intended to discuss his concerns about the campaign’s turn toward negativity.
From his first answer, however, it was clear Frum had a very different agenda: to attack Rachel Maddow. Discussing the “ugliness of tone” in American politics, he said that Maddow’s show, “unfortunately, is itself an example of that problem.” He then compared her tone to the hateful outbursts of some McCain-Palin supporters:
MADDOW: Do you think that my tone on this show is equivalent to people calling Barack Obama somebody who pals around with terrorists, people yelling from the audience at McCain-Palin rallies, Bomb Obama. Kill him. Off with his head. Traitor. Are you accusing me of an equivalence in tone?
FRUM: I don’t think that’s an important question. I think the question is, given the small plate of responsibility that you personally have, how do you manage that responsibility? The fact that other people fail in other ways is not an excuse for you failing in your way.
MADDOW: But you did just say it’s the same thing, that you’re seeing the same thing on this show in a lot -
(CROSS TALK)
FRUM: I worry about that.
Watch it: at link
It’s laughable for Frum to be lecturing Maddow on striking an appropriate tone. It was David Frum, after all, who coined the phrase “Axis of Evil,” writing it into Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address. After leaving the White House, Frum helped fund a smear campaign against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) when she visited Syria. He attacked Al Gore for speaking out against Bush’s foreign policy, saying, “Maybe a National Psychological Council would be a good idea after all … [Gore] ought to seek out for his own good a cool and quiet darkened room.”
In the past weeks, McCain supporters have called Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “an Arab,” “Little Hussein,” and a “terrorist.” They have declared themselves to be “scared” of an Obama presidency, and have likened him to a monkey. By contrast, Maddow has consistently welcomed guests who disagree with her — including Frum himself — and has interviewed conservatives and progressives alike with dignity and poise, even when the interviewee decides to attack her and her show. Perhaps that’s why Maddow’s ratings continue to skyrocket.

Her own Agenda...
Palin Opposed Plan To Bring Alaska’s Natural Gas To The Lower 48 States
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) often claims that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) is the country’s top energy expert, citing her work sharing Alaska’s energy wealth with the rest of the country. For example, McCain said she was responsible for “the $40 billion pipeline bringing natural gas from Alaska down to the lower 48.” (However, “the pipeline exists only on paper.”) Similarly, Palin has claimed that her state produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy. (This is a lie.)
Actually, last year, Palin opposed a plan to bring Alaska’s natural gas to the lower 48 states. This past summer, the Department of Energy issued an order allowing ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil to to export 98.1 billion cubic feet of Alaskan natural gas — roughly the amount of natural gas used by 1.4 million families — to Asia. This had been the practice since 1969, since there was no alternative.
However, as Time reports, “since this past May, some of Alaska’s gas could have wound up in domestic hands.” Sempra Energy opened the first Liquified Natural Gas terminal on the West Coast of North America. The facility “is tied directly to the gas pipeline system that leads to California, Texas and Arizona.” However, Palin intervened with the DOE in April 2007, asking it to approve Conoco/Marathon’s exports to Asia:
She asked DOE to condition its approval on guarantees that gas needed in Alaska not be diverted to the better-paying foreign venues — a position she held until this past January, when the producers reached separate agreement with the state to meet its needs.
At no time did Palin or her government cite the desire to preserve Alaskan gas for the lower 48 states. The Sempra terminal began operations just four months after Palin announced unconditional support for the Marathon and ConocoPhillips request and a month before DOE approved their plans to export gas to Asia.
As one of America’s top energy experts, Palin should have known about the Sempra project, which was “well-known and much anticipated in energy circles.”
In addition, as Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) pointed out in a letter to Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman in September, Chugach Electric Association, the largest electric utility in Alaska, also opposed Palin’s request. “Indeed, the Department rejected the pleas from Chugach to condition the export of Alaskan gas on assurances that Alaska’s own need for natural gas was met,” wrote Wyden.

Three 2008 Nobel Laureates In Science Endorse Obama
Barack Obama's campaign will announce today that three 2008 Nobel laureates in Science have added their names to a list of 62 Nobel winners endorsing the Democratic candidate for president: Martin Chalfie of Columbia University, Roger Tsien of the University of California at San Diego, and the University of Chicago's Yoichiro Nambu.
During the administration of George W. Bush, vital parts of our country's scientific enterprise have been damaged by stagnant or declining federal support. The government's scientific advisory process has been distorted by political considerations. As a result, our once dominant position in the scientific world has been shaken and our prosperity has been placed at risk. We have lost time critical for the development of new ways to provide energy, treat disease, reverse climate change, strengthen our security, and improve our economy.
We have watched Senator Obama's approach to these issues with admiration. We especially applaud his emphasis during the campaign on the power of science and technology to enhance our nation's competitiveness. In particular, we support the measures he plans to take – through new initiatives in education and training, expanded research funding, an unbiased process for obtaining scientific advice, and an appropriate balance of basic and applied research – to meet the nation's and the world's most urgent needs.
Senator Obama understands that Presidential leadership and federal investments in science and technology are crucial elements in successful governance of the world's leading country. We hope you will join us as we work together to ensure his election in November.

McCain Transition Chief Aided Saddam In Lobbying Effort
Uh. Oh.
Palling around with terrorist sympathizers again, John?
~-~-~
William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.
The two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein's government.
During the same period beginning in 1992, Timmons worked closely with the two lobbyists, Samir Vincent and Tongsun Park, on a previously unreported prospective deal with the Iraqis in which they hoped to be awarded a contract to purchase and resell Iraqi oil. Timmons, Vincent, and Park stood to share at least $45 million if the business deal went through.
...
Timmons' activities occurred in the years following the first Gulf War, when Washington considered Iraq to be a rogue enemy state and a sponsor of terrorism.

President Calderón's announcement earlier this month must have come as a bit of an unwanted surprise to the Bush Administration. On October 2, Calderón proposed legislation that would decriminalize drug possession, ostensibly for personal use. Not just for marijuana, as one might have expected in a country where pot smoke has not been demonized to the same degree as in the U.S., but for cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin, as well.

Second Trooper-Gate Probe
Second Trooper-Gate Probe Expanding
By Zachary Roth - October 14, 2008, 2:15PM
There's further evidence that the investigation into Trooper-Gate being conducted by the state Personnel Board could have real teeth.
The Anchorage Daily News reports that the probe has broadened to include other ethics complaints against Sarah Palin, and actions by other state employees.
That's according to the investigator hired by the board, Timothy Petumenos, who conveyed the information in two recent letters sent to an Anchorage attorney who had threated a lawsuit over Palin's effort to waive confidentiality in the matter.
Petumenos, a Democrat with a reputation for aggressive prosecutions, plans to sit down with the governor, who is cooperating with his investigation, next week.
It's not clear which other ethics complaints about the governor Petumenos is now looking into, but two have been previously reported. One relates somewhat to Trooper-Gate: the state troopers' union alleges that state officials illegally examined the personnel file of Mike Wooten, seeking damaging information on him. Wooten's feud with the Palin family was at the center of Trooper-Gate.
In addition, a good-government activist has alleged that Palin circumvented state hiring practices in giving a job to a supporter.
Petumenos has also requested a copy of the Branchflower report, released Friday.
Many observers have questioned the ability of the personnel board to come to independent conclusions on Trooper-Gate, largely because its three members are appointed by the governor, and it conducts its deliberations largely in secret.
It's unclear when Petumenos' investigation will wrap up, but the ADN also reports that the personnel board has meetings scheduled for Oct. 20 and Nov. 3. Adds the paper: "The agendas for those meetings mention confidential ethics matters to be handled in executive session."
Separately, ADN reports that Walt Monegan, the former public safety commissioner whose firing by Palin is at the heart of Trooper-Gate, has asked the personnel board to hold a hearing, then issue public findings, on whether he was a "rogue" employee and demonstrated "insubordination", as the Palin camp has publicly alleged in an effort to discredit him.
Palin has given several apparently contradictory explanations for why she fired Monegan. Branchflower's report concluded that Monegan's reluctance to fire Wooten was a contributing factor in his own dismissal.

Democracy Corps: Independent Voters Move to Obama
The latest Democracy Corps survey shows Sen. Barack Obama holding a double-digit national lead over Sen. John McCain, 50% to 40%.
Key finding: "Obama's double-digit electoral advantage is built on his surge among independent voters. In this survey, Obama edged McCain among independents by 14 points (47 to 33 percent) - his biggest margin since the beginning of the campaign. His advantage emerged as more independent voters moved away from McCain to support Bob Barr and some to support Ralph Nader."

More on McCain's "Transistion Chief"
Later, when Timmons pressed the case even more aggressively that sanctions against Saddam's regime be eased, he, Vincent and Park hoped to profit as well, according to the Volcker report. "Continuing through 1994 and 1995, Mr. Vincent and Mr. Park, along with Mr. Timmons and others, persisted in their efforts to establish a foothold in the Iraqi oil business," the report stated.
At one point, Timmons even boasted to investigators that it was his ideas that later became the basis for the United Nations' oil-for-food program.
(Ya, THAT program right-wingers went ballistic over)
Under that program, the United Nations allowed Iraq to sell its oil under U.N. supervision, with the proceeds placed in U.N. escrow accounts to buy food, medicine, and other humanitarian goods for the Iraqi people.
However, a major flaw in the program was that Saddam Hussein's regime was allowed to play a role in the selection of oil companies awarded contracts. Because of lax oversight of the program, Saddam's government was able to demand that foreign oil companies -- including American ones -- provide more than $1.7 billion in kickbacks to his regime.
One of the most outspoken critics in the U.S. Senate of the oil-for-food program was John McCain:
"We need to have a full and complete cooperation on the part of the U.N. about this whole oil-for-food program, which stinks to high heaven," McCain told Fox News in Dec. 2004. "We're talking about billions and billions of dollars here that were diverted for many wrong purposes. And this is an example of corruption.
"And by the way, it's an argument, maybe a small one, but maybe an argument that justifies our action in Iraq. Because clearly the sanctions and the framework of those sanctions was completely eroded."

It is from MoveOn. Very cute
This isn't about the trailer trash.
The media, and prominent politicians, should demand that McLiar apologize to both Arab Americans, Arabs generally, and Muslims.
One of those prominent politicians, the perfect Rethug:
Darrell Issa
Middle East involvement
As one of the few Arab-Americans in Congress, Issa has had a significant but sometimes controversial role in U.S. peace initiatives in the Middle East. He traveled to Lebanon and Syria in an effort to negotiate the end of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon. In 2003, he appeared at a Washington rally by Iranian groups protesting against the Islamic government in Iran.[7]
Activist Debbie Schlussel wrote a column calling him "Jihad Darrell", charging that he sympathized with Hezbollah despite its being listed by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization[8]. Issa denied this; he later speculated that Schlussel's column might have inspired an aborted Jewish Defense League plot in 2001 to bomb his district office in San Clemente[9]. JDL leader Irving Rubin was arrested along with Earl Krugel in connection with the plot, which reportedly had focused on other targets before shifting to Issa's office.[10]
(Of course, I'm not holding my breath.)
Republicans Who Fund Bill Ayers
Andrew Sullivan:
I think Obama's relatively weak but nonetheless real interactions with William Ayers are a legitimate campaign issue. But Obama's best response, after telling the facts of the relationship, is to point out who else supported him. Republican machers Walter and Leonora Annenberg gave the former terrorist $50 million. They also gave money to Rick Santorum, Strom Thurmond and Mitt Romney. Annenberg was Nixon's ambassador to Britain. If Obama is "palling around with terrorists," the Republican Annenbergs are funding them.
Yesterday, the McCain campain put out a press release boasting that Leonore Annenberg had just endorsed him for president. Why is McCain happy to accept the endorsement of a funder of terrorism?

A little scoop on Christopher Buckley
Christopher Buckley, author and son of late conservative icon William F. Buckley, last week surprised readers of the magazine his father founded, the National Review: “Sorry, Dad, I’m voting for Obama” was the headline on The Daily Beast blog.
Tuesday in a phone interview with the Austin American-Statesman he revealed another surprise: After NR readers raised holy heck over his perceived betrayal of the right, he offered to resign his column - and it was accepted.
http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=12387
...
More From Buckley:
As for the mail flooding into National Review Online—that’s been running about, oh, 700-to-1 against. In fact, the only thing the Right can’t quite decide is whether I should be boiled in oil or just put up against the wall and shot. Lethal injection would be too painless.
I had gone out of my way in my Beast endorsement to say that I was not doing it in the pages of National Review, where I write the back-page column, because of the experience of my colleague, the lovely Kathleen Parker. Kathleen had written in NRO that she felt Sarah Palin was an embarrassment. (Hardly an alarmist view.) This brought 12,000 livid emails, among them a real charmer suggesting that Kathleen’s mother ought to have aborted her and tossed the fetus into a dumpster. I didn’t want to put NR in an awkward position.
Since my Obama endorsement, Kathleen and I have become BFFs and now trade incoming hate-mails.
...
So, I have been effectively fatwahed (is that how you spell it?) by the conservative movement, and the magazine that my father founded must now distance itself from me. But then, conservatives have always had a bit of trouble with the concept of diversity. The GOP likes to say it’s a big-tent. Looks more like a yurt to me.
While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for. Eight years of “conservative” government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case.
So, to paraphrase a real conservative, Ronald Reagan: I haven’t left the Republican Party. It left me.
Thanks, anyway, for the memories, and here’s to happier days and with any luck, a bit less fresh hell.

i love the smell of panic and fear
you can tell the republiscum are panicking when they send me a form letter asking for money. it means they are buying any list they can and throwing their net pretty wide.
the best part is the crap they write. its hard to believe they can keep a straight face when they say:
"we've reached a criticial juncture in the campaign. the obama democrats and their left-wing special interest allies have come together in a united front, combining their enormous fundraising arsenal. meanwhile, the national democrats lead by chairman howard dean are stepping up their cynical campaign of distortions and outright lies, and with the help of their cronies, like moveon.org are raising staggering amounts of money.
my friend, the last thing we republicans can afford is to have our hands tied behind our backs due to the fact that their candidate broke his promise to the american people and refused to accept the presidental campaign spending limit..."

A leading neuroscientist says processing digital information can rewire your circuits. But is it evolution?
By Jeneen Interlandi | NEWSWEEK

Is technology changing our brains? A new study by UCLA neuroscientist Gary Small adds to a growing body of research that says it is. And according to Small's new book, "iBRAIN: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind," a dramatic shift in how we gather information and communicate with one another has touched off an era of rapid evolution that may ultimately change the human brain as we know it. "Perhaps not since early man first discovered how to use a tool has the human brain been affected so quickly and so dramatically," he writes. "As the brain evolves and shifts its focus towards new technological skills, it drifts away from fundamental social skills."

Dem administrations should sell bonds--
Bulls, Bears, Donkeys and Elephants
By TOMMY McCALL
Since 1929, Republicans and Democrats have each controlled the presidency for nearly 40 years. So which party has been better for American pocketbooks and capitalism as a whole? Well, here’s an experiment: imagine that during these years you had to invest exclusively under either Democratic or Republican administrations. How would you have fared?
As of Friday, a $10,000 investment in the S.& P. stock market index* would have grown to $11,733 if invested under Republican presidents only, although that would be $51,211 if we exclude Herbert Hoover’s presidency during the Great Depression. Invested under Democratic presidents only, $10,000 would have grown to $300,671 at a compound rate of 8.9 percent over nearly 40 years.

Conscience of the Israeli spymaster’s daughter
Igal Sarna meets a Mossad chief’s daughter who is in jail for refusing national service
Omer Goldman is a very pretty girl, slender as a model. Never still and very restless, the expected loss of her freedom fills her with anxiety. For months before she refused to be drafted into the Israel Defence Forces she went to a psychologist every week to prepare for what was to come: incarceration in a cell in a military prison. A narrow cage for a songbird.
On her last day of freedom as a civilian, I saw her at the gates of the intake base to which she had received orders to report for induction for a two-year stint with the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), like every Israeli girl. But she came to refuse the draft, to be tried and to be imprisoned immediately.
Several dozen supporters showed up - members of Anarchists Against the Wall, her mother and a few girlfriends - and she stayed close to them as though she were trying to delay the end, the moment when she would clash all alone with the army.
For Omer, this transition is sharper and more surprising than for most conscientious objectors: she is the daughter of the outgoing deputy head of Mossad, the man who very nearly became head of the organisation.
She is one of about 40 high school students who signed the 2008 12th-graders' letter. Thirty-eight years ago, the first such letter caused a huge uproar. In April 1970 students from my final year in secondary school sent a letter to the prime minister, Golda Meir, against the occupation and the war of attrition. Since then there have been other letters and the uproar has died down. But in Israel conscientious objection still arouses cold, self-righteous wrath.
Omer told me that the crucial moment of her metamorphosis occurred this year when she went to a Palestinian village where the IDF had set up a roadblock. Someone she had considered her enemy all her life stood beside her and someone who was supposed to be defending her opened fire at her.
"We were sitting by the roadside talking and soldiers came along and after a few seconds they received an order and fired gas grenades and rubber bullets at us. Then it struck me, to my astonishment, that the soldiers were following an order without thinking. For the first time in my life an Israeli soldier raised his weapon and fired at me."
And when you told your father?
"Dad was astonished and angry that I had been there and endangered my life. After that we had conversations. He supported me as his daughter and we have a good relationship, but he is decidedly opposed to what I do.

The latest national poll shows McCain has done himself serious damage:
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is entering the third and final presidential debate Wednesday with a wide lead over Republican rival John McCain nationally, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows.
The Obama-Biden ticket now leads the McCain-Palin ticket 53 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, a 14-point margin. One week ago, prior to the Town Hall debate that uncommitted voters saw as a win for Obama, that margin was just three points.
Among independents who are likely voters - a group that has swung back and forth between McCain and Obama over the course of the campaign - the Democratic ticket now leads by 18 points. McCain led among independents last week.
McCain's campaign strategy may be hurting hurt him: Twenty-one percent of voters say their opinion of the Republican has changed for the worse in the last few weeks. The top two reasons cited for the change of heart are McCain's attacks on Obama and his choice of Sarah Palin as running mate....
McCain's favorable rating has fallen four points from last week, to 36 percent, and is now lower than his 41 percent unfavorable rating. Obama, by contrast, is now viewed favorably by half of registered voters and unfavorably by just 32 percent....
But with more than four out of five of each candidate’s supporters now saying their minds are made up, the poll suggests that McCain faces serious challenges as he looks to close the gap on his Democratic rival in the final three weeks of the campaign.

I just got back from a rally
I went just to blog it. I got on the will call list for the best seats. I stood in line and was about to go into this small gym where a very few of us could go and listen. Outside were so many who wanted in but had to listen from the outside speaker that was set up for the huge "overflow" crowd.
The speakers were Bill Clinton and Rick Noriega.
I went to take a picture of the crowd size before entering only to discover I had forgot to get batteries off the charger this morning when I grabbed my camera bag.
So I left.
I just went to blog it. Next in 30 min I'm meeting the Democratic challenger to the awful Sam Johnson. Maybe I'll remember to grab my battery this time.
...will greed still be good?
It may seem an unlikely time to revisit the notion that "greed is good", but it was revealed yesterday that plans are advancing on a sequel to the 1987 film Wall Street. Titled Money Never Sleeps, the film meets Wall Street's iconic trader Gordon Gekko as he leaves prison. While Michael Douglas, who won an Oscar for the part in the original, has not signed to reprise the role, he has not dismissed the possibility either.

McCain-Palin Supporter Shouts: "Obama Bin Laden"
By Greg Sargent - October 14, 2008, 4:32PM
The creativity of some of McCain-Palin's supporters continues to dazzle and amaze. Here's the latest -- at a rally yesterday morning, a McCain-Palin supporter shouted out: "Obama Bin Laden."
You can hear it at the 12-second mark, just before Palin launches into her now-familiar (and false) claim that McCain is too modest to discuss his POW service: Video at link
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/mccain-palin_sup...
It's impossible to know whether Palin heard it. The above vid makes it seem like the person who shouted it was far away from her, but the video posted by this DailyKos diarist suggests otherwise.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/14/15330/121/125/605008
Earlier today we heard a McCain-Palin supporter shout "kill him" at a Palin rally. TPM Reader MLC asks a very good question about all this: "Where is the Secret Service in all of this? What obligation does the Palin detail have if they actually hear something at one of her rallies?"

Here's waht I reported on earlier on CNN's Rick Sanchez show
Palin's Pals: Talking about those Alaska fringe alliances on CNN
By David Neiwert Tuesday Oct 14, 2008 2:30pm
Video at link
Well, now we know what it takes to get a response to legitimate questions about their candidate out of the McCain/Palin campaign: Appear on CNN.
I did so today, on Rick Sanchez's CNN Newsroom program, where we discussed the Salon piece Max Blumenthal and I co-wrote and its ramifications. Sanchez was particularly focused on Palin's connections to the Alaskan Independence Party, so that was the bulk of our discussion. (I'll update with the transcript when it's available.)
Now, when we were preparing the Salon piece for publication, I contacted the McCain/Palin campaign first by phone to ask for their reactions to our report's findings. They asked me to send an e-mail, which I did. But I never heard a word back from them.
So today, after CNN picked up the story, they were in fact able to elicit the following response:
CNN is furthering a smear with this report, no different than if your network ran a piece questioning Senator Obama's religion. No serious news organization has tried to make this connection, and it is unfortunate that CNN would be the first.
We are trying to arrange to have one of the Governor's people come on air to respond in the event you do run this piece.
A few points about this:
-- A smear by definition is untrue. However, everything in our story is fully documented. We've even posted the relevant documents here so readers can judge the accuracy of the story for themselves.
-- This is not about Sarah Palin's faith; it's about her conduct as a public official.
-- In fact, CNN is not the first network to pick up on this story. Rachel Maddow at MSNBC in fact featured Blumenthal on her Thursday night broadcast, when the story first broke, to talk about it.
If Team McCain wants to convince anyone this is merely a "smear", they're going to have to demonstrate some falsity or distortion first.
What we've already heard from some Palin defenders is that this report is merely another attempt at "guilt by association."
But "guilt by association," by definition, involves an entirely irrelevant association (which describes the William Ayers "connection" to a T). Palin's associations with the "Patriot" right, however, are entirely relevant, because they reflect directly on her conduct as a public official and her judgment. They also, I should add, reflect on a deeper level the kind of right-wing populism she's been indulging in recent weeks.

Special Comment: Control
Special Comment: Control Your Campaign
by Keith Olbermann
Tue Oct 14, 2008 at 03:34:32 PM PDT
"It's not negativity, it's truthfulness," said the Demagogue from Alaska as she drew visions of terrorists and foreigners and hobgoblins across the blank minds of her supporters...
"I've heard the same things said about me at Senator Obama's speeches," said Senator Holier-Than-Thou - ever the real victim, never at fault.
And so, as Senator Obama's lead spirals upwards (14 points over McCain in tonight's CBS News/New York Times poll) we spiral downwards towards the point where anybody can say anything at a McCain or Palin rally - someone else shouted "kill him" today - knowing neither candidate will ever draw a line... will never say enough!...
Because - they do not want to.
Tonight's Special Comment actually grows out of the "McCain In The Membrane" segment, but obviously the topic has become far too serious to be treated in the satirical manner reserved for that feature.
That another voice of hate should have emanated from a Palin or McCain event, with not a hint of reproach from either candidate, is appalling enough.
That Senator McCain should have gone on another martyrdom kick - insisting he is the true victim here - is beneath the minimum dignity a political figure must retain to maintain viability as a public leader.
Congressman Lewis, Senator McCain says, "accused me and Sarah Palin of being involved in segregation, George Wallace and even made reference to a church bombing where children were killed. Senator Obama has not repudiated that statement. Senator Obama should do so immediately. Its the most outrageous thing that I have heard since in politics. It is disgraceful."
Disgraceful?
Obviously, Senator, you haven't heard your own speeches, and Governor Palin's, and what people shout during them.
And you haven't heard your state GOP Chair in Virginia, Jeffrey Frederick, giving talking points to 30 of your field-operatives heading out to canvass voters in Gainesville, Virginia...
With a reporter present, telling them to try to forge a connection between Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden - to emphasize bombings and terrorism.
And you haven't heard those volunteers, your volunteers Senator McCain, shout back "and he won't salute the flag" and "we don't even know where Senator Obama was really born."
Senator McCain -- these people are speaking for you!
It is a brief Comment tonight and not placed at the show's end.
There is a simple demand at its end, harkening back to Senator McCain's stunt of late September. The gist: rein this in, or get out.

Thanks you guys,
I appreciate your concern. Cat Chew got it right, I did kinda get rooked into doing it and decided to try and make it work. The initial fear of trying to do it gave way to the realization that it was actually fun, but that led to demanding more time to keep it working. I realized in the past 3 months that it is possible to do it "IF" I can attract folks to help and get the occasional big name or expert guest. It's a lot of fun when it all works, hell sometimes it's a rush. I never would have thought Sam would come on the show (thanks to Fernando) or Marc Maron (thanks to mhappenow) or that Shannyn Moore would be on the show and 2 weeks later be on Countdown. Without doubt, it can be a real rush, but it's also been a drain and I need a break.
If I do come back, I'll definitely have a better plan and want to attract a slightly bigger audience. I'll also definitely pass the hat to help cover the costs but I'd never want to go commercial. It would have to be user supported with any excess $$ going to some cause or candidate or to pay talent.
So, in the meantime I'm just gonna have some free form fun and do as many updates as I can ... as long as it's fun.

US Sen Dodd To Introduce Consumer Protection Bill
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd said Tuesday that he plans to unveil a legislative package including consumer protection measures pertaining to credit cards, predatory lending, bankruptcies and subprime mortgages.
Dodd, D-Conn., said that he will seek passage of the package - either on its own or as part of an economic stimulus bill - as soon as mid-November, when the Senate will hold a lame-duck work session after the Nov. 4 election Dodd framed the package as a counterpart to a $700 billion Wall Street rescue package signed into law earlier this month.
"It seems to me appropriate that we take some steps to provide for the consumer as well," Dodd said.
Dodd said that he had contacted House and Senate leaders to discuss the package, but hadn't spoken to anyone yet.
The package would include a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures and a provision allowing homeowners to protect their first property through bankruptcy proceedings, according to Dodd. While many congressional Democrats wanted to include a bankruptcy provision in the rescue bill passed earlier this month, the proposal faced strong opposition from congressional Republicans and the White House.

Amazing and funny show and it's a shame they appear to be retiring. I think the only U.S. dates left are in Chicago, but if you are there or in Europe you should definitely check them out. Nobody puts on a show like The Residents....

An opinion on the situation we find ourselves in
I think the homeless and unemployed people need to camp out outside of their most recent CEO's mansion's electric gates. Before it comes to begging for food, maybe we can go as protesters. The downsizers deserve no peace and should be dogged everywhere they go. I drive by these castles, these compounds of the CEO's and hedge funders on my way to work. What better way to show who they are and what they are guilty of than to protest right at the door. Once we become fully disempowered, ie: starving, we will not have the strength to protest. We should not wait until we are completely hobbled. It will help them too. Good Christians need to be reminded that the lesser among us are perhaps closer to Jesus than they are! Yes?

Two More Polls Show Obama
Two More Polls Show Obama Pulling Away
Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg: Obama 50%, McCain 41%
"Obama improved sharply over the last month among independent voters, a much-desired bloc. McCain carried them by a 15-point margin in September; in this poll, Obama led among that group by five points. Men, too, moved toward Obama, with the traditionally Republican-leaning group now in his camp. He also maintained his lead among female voters."
New York Times/CBS News: Obama 53%, McCain 39%
"Six in 10 voters surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than explaining what he would do as president; by about the same number, voters said Mr. Obama was spending more of his time explaining than attacking."

I can see 479 oak trees from my deck. Okay, maybe not 479. I haven't counted them.
But there is another twenty or more acres of forest that I cannot see from my deck, so 479 trees is a conservative estimate.

What’s Your Breaking Point?
Posted by Loralynne Krobetzky
We’ve Reached Ours…Share your story
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job as Communications Director for the Nader/Gonzalez campaign is hearing from individual people all over the country who have decided to break away from the corporate-controlled two-party options offered them by the media. It reminds me what we’re fighting for, through late nights, media blackouts, and ballot obstructions, when I hear the stories of citizens who have concluded that the lesser of two evils is not good enough, citizens who have abandoned the two party system because it has abandoned them, citizens who have reached their breaking point.
Every responsible citizen must know their breaking point or they are doomed to have their rights trampled and their power usurped. For some, when both major parties refuse to seriously invest in sustainable energy, they have reached their breaking point. For others, when single-payer healthcare for all is not even up for discussion, they have reached their breaking point. For many, when both parties collude to bailout Wall Street lenders while the homeowners they victimized are left to fend for themselves, they have reached their breaking point.
It is easy enough to simply pull the lever for a Democrat or Republican. It takes courage and effort to break through the media blockade and political bigotry to support an independent or third-party campaign. But all over America, citizens are growing tired of politics as usual and are reaching out for a candidate who truly represents their views. These voters have reached their breaking points, and are embracing the progressive voice of the Nader/Gonzalez campaign. Send me your story to share at loralynne@votenader.org, so the growing numbers of independent voters can join our voices, and together, we can change the system.

Lance V. Mack – former Obama Iowa delegate
Marion, Iowa
Against an unpopular war, a worsening climate crisis, and a politics of fear and partisanship, CHANGE is a welcome word. As Senator Obama promises pragmatism and reform, many Americans see his candidacy as a reviving wind—as another chance to energize our democracy. Lance V. Mack, an Obama Delegate to the Iowa State Convention, was one such American. He thought that if America was to save itself, if our government was to deal with the dangers that face us, we would have to elect a Democrat - a principled, hopeful, progressive. But even after supporting the Senator, after believing in his vision and his promise, Mr. Mack reached his breaking point.
Senator Obama’s stances on national health care and the impeachment of Bush and Cheney are “progressive” only in name. For Mr. Mack, Obama’s position on these two issues has caused him to renounce his support. “I had hoped that Obama would see the light and move further to the left,” Mr. Mack said. “Bush and Cheney should be tried and convicted….and national health insurance should be affordable to everybody on American soil.” Instead, Mr. Mack believes that Obama has folded on the FISA bill, failed in his duty to protect the constitution, and has given in to insurance companies- to the detriment of the sick.
Like many Americans who feel shut out and forgotten, Mr. Mack wants change to come to Washington. But Senator Obama cannot take people like Mr. Mack for granted. The progressive vote must be earned. Mr. Mack’s demands and his hopes lie with Nader/Gonzalez – the ticket whose promise remains uncompromised.
“Senator Obama’s positions are politics as usual that make me feel like an invisible American. But Ralph Nader and Matt Gonzalez are right on every issue that matters to me” adds Mr. Mack. “Enough is enough, Barack. I have reached –and indeed passed- my breaking point. It is with a heavy, yet audacious and hope filled heart that I am withdrawing my support and enthusiasm for you and dedicating my energies to Ralph Nader and Matt Gonzalez.”

This morning while I was taking my nap I dreamed I was interviewing McCain with someone from this blog but I don't know who, only it was a woman. (Prolly tD) While answering a question McCain's left eye rolled back in his head and his speech turned to incoherent stutters. I was unusually lucid in this dream and rationalized my reaction. Rather than be a "gothca journalist" type ready to snap pics of the old fart having a TIA, I reverted to my E.R. medic mode and tried to render aid.
it woke me up and I felt rather proud of myself because when it comes to politics I can be a real ass. Humans I find are another matter.

My memory sucks, but you mentioned your springtime frozen oaks a while back... I've been wondering how they're doing.
------
It seems to have been just another day in the life of a tree. I don't doubt that the annular representing that year of poor growth would reveal itself to an arborist.
This growing year has been stupendous (from a tree's perspective); lots of rain, never dry and hot, the springtime arrived early and the fall is arriving late.
Both my house and my shop have metal roofs. The acorns have been thumping for over a month. The squirrels have become slackers, "What, me worry?" Judging from the heaps of hulls at the walnut buyer locations, it has been a banner year all around.
And so it goes. The springtime buds get their asses frozen off one year and the next year is made in the shade.
The east exterior wall of my house is currently nothing more than a sheet of plastic and a few framing studs (don't ask). A few nights ago, a hoot owl parked a very short distance from the wall and launched into an announcement of something-or-other. It was very loud and awoke me from a sound sleep.
It is not as quiet in the sticks as some people think.

Tonight I met Tom Daley
Tonight I met Tom Daley for Congress Texas District 3. Below is a picture of his beautiful family. Super smart and nice guy. My favorite part was when I asked his daughter what she thought of him. She had too many things she liked about him to count. That goes a very long way with me.
Besides all of that, his stand on helping people and his personal volunteer efforts are noteworthy, unexpected, and a clear contrast between him and his opponent
I see the logic.. I do..
My friend explained things, Kevin explains things...I understand...
I almost never have the word McCain or Palin in any of my posts..you know why? They are too stupid to think about....I understand that danger and get it completely...
So that leaves Obama to think about..and if the only reason I can come up with to vote for him is that he isn't McCain...that's not satisfactory to me...Couple of days ago I was closer to the idea...But I really feel like I am doing what I am supposed to do. If I vote for Obama, I'm saying his votes are ok with me - they are not. His tough talk, for election strategy - or not - are not representative of me.
And if we were exposed to all the valid candidates, equally
and all voted for the true representative for ourselves from them, we might be making some sort of progress in this dumb-ass country of stolen, imaginary borders...But we aren't. We have. Most people think they have two choices...Good luck with that....I don't get pissed about it like some do at me...it just is the way it is..Since this blog is open to me I be myself here...
On the other hand..I undertook this voting thing on purpose...I think I'm going to re-focus after this election...Leaders SUCK....Followers suck too...IMHO...

President Evo Morales
Bolivian President Evo Morales today led a peaceful march of social organizations that set off towards La Paz to call for a referendum on the new constitution, PL reports.
At the mass rally in Caracollo, a town in the Bolivian altiplano 200 kilometers from the seat of government, Morales affirmed that the demonstration is an expression of the conscience of the people, who support the current process of change.
The head of state highlighted that this is the biggest demonstration to date of unity and the will to fight for social justice, since the March for Life led by Bolivian miners in 1986.
He added that 5,000 people from the country’s nine departments and representing different sectors and political affiliations are on their way to La Paz to demand that Congress pass a bill calling for a referendum on the constitution.
"But at the end of this march, we could be joined by close to one million people determined to re-found Bolivia by establishing a new political constitution," he affirmed.

The revolutionary struggle and social reform in Ecuador
An interview with a comrade from the Grupo Anarco-Comunista "15 de Noviembre" The following interview was made in July and August 2008 with a member of the "15th November" Anarchist Communist Group, a recently-formed libertarian group in Ecuador, which among other things publishes the magazine "Chasqui Anarquista" with other anarchists, of which two issues have so far come out. In this interview, we tried to find out a little about the origins of the libertarian movement in Ecuador and understand how anarchist communists feel about the social reforms being carried out by Rafael Correa's government. [Castellano]...
Do you believe there is some tangible threat on the part of the aggressive Colombian military forces, who are undoubtedly acting at the dictates of the USA?
Uribe's right-wing government is the expression of the imperialist re-composition of South America. This was seen in the plan to put "Plan Colombia" into operation at the start of this decade.
Behind the euphemism of combating drug trafficking, the United States is trying to set up geopolitical control over our lands. This behaviour, together with the growing arms funding and professionalization of the Colombian army, demonstrates the interests and influence of Yankee imperialism over the Colombian government.
The real danger is that the conflict will spread throughout the region, a policy that guides the Colombian government's relations with its neighbours, including Ecuador. There have of course been set-ups, like the cowardly murder of the FARC-EP commander "Raúl Reyes" in this country, or lies like Ecuador being the home of the guerrillas' rearguard.
We must be careful with the distortions that can easily be given to this problem, and at least for the moment prevent any direct intervention in "our America" by the imperialists.
Lastly, could I ask you what chances there are of building a revolutionary, libertarian alternative in Ecuador?
What possibilities there are, depend not only on the conditions for it. It would be ironic to say that, as they are already in place; we live in a class society.
It depends on the conviction and dedication of each member of the Organization in being a part of the class war, in the neighbourhoods, in schools and universities, in the workplace. It is interesting to see that in Ecuador, three consecutive presidents in a row have been swept away by the "Out, all of them!" movement - and not only these three parasites, but also the institutions and both private and State bodies. And one of our most basic weapons in this revolutionary task is to take advantage of this discontent.

alternatives
Alice, that Chomsky quote about "if I were in a swing state I'd vote for Obama" is good enough for me. Chomsky tries to emphasize the practical while retaining the goal of the ideal.
In 2000 I voted Nader. Living in Boston, my vote didn't hurt the lesser of the two evils. Now Al Gore ran a shitty campaign, but a few thousand people in Florida who felt like I did had a part in swinging that election to the WORSE of two evils. I think we can say that Al Gore would have been significantly less atrocious than The Decider, even if he wouldn't have represented our ideals.
So I'm all for better candidates and third party options. But the whole electoral apparatus is currently set up to make that nearly impossible. Step One, work towards changing the way elections are decided in this country while voting 3rd party candidates into local and state offices where they have a shot at winning and therefore developing a Farm Team (in the sports sense) of viable future candidates for higher offices. Step Two, elect one of these people to the Presidency who will have the good of the American people in heart and mind.
I feel like supporting a campaign that has no chance of winning (until Step One is completed) is like trying to hammer the square peg into the round hole. But I'm with you aspiration-wise. We all deserve better.

Federal court: Ohio must check voter registrations
These asshole rethugs !
Stupid F-ing Judges..
By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A federal appeals court ordered Ohio's top elections official to set up a system by Friday to verify the eligibility of newly registered voters and make the information available to the state's 88 county election boards.
The full 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on Tuesday upheld a lower court ruling that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner must use other government records to check thousands of new voters for registration fraud.
A three-judge panel of the 6th Circuit had disagreed last week. The full court's ruling, in which nine of 16 judges concurred, overturns that decision.
Ohio Republicans had sued Brunner, a Democrat. Her spokesman had no immediate comment Tuesday.
About 666,000 Ohioans have registered to vote since January, with many doing so before the contested Democratic presidential primary election last March between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. The presidential election is Nov. 4.

The Republican Voter Fraud Hoax
Donald Duck and the Dallas Cowboys won't steal the election for Obama. Acorn's only crime is registering Democratic voters.
Brad Friedman:
Barack Obama and the Democrats are stealing the election. Massive voter fraud is being carried out, even as we speak, by their henchmen, known by the innocuous sounding Association for Community Organisations for Reform Now, or Acorn. Clever bastards.
The only problem? Despite the screaming wall-to-wall coverage of "Democratic voter fraud in 11 swing states" as seen on Fox News and even the once-respectable CNN, none of it's true. None of it.
In just the last week, we've had a phoney stunt raid in swing state Nevada (where Acorn had been cooperating with officials for months, concerning problem canvassers they'd long ago fired); a Republican election official in swing state Missouri tell Fox News that she's being beseiged with fraudulent registration forms from Acorn (in a county where they've not done any registration work since August); a Republican sheriff in swing state Ohio, who, the very next day, suddenly requested the names and addresses of hundreds of early voters (with evidence of exactly zero wrong doing, but lots of Democratic-leaning college student in the particular county, and John McCain's state campaign chair as a partner in the investigation); and a screaming front page headline in Rupert Murdoch's New York Post about a guy who claims he was somehow tricked by Acorn into registering 72 times (but read the article closely to note he says he registered at the same address each time, which, even if true, would allow him - you guessed it - precisely one legal vote.)
It's an old Republican scam, but it's never been carried out with more zeal than this year. The Republicans have been putting so much time, money and resources into the propaganda leading up to this over the last four years, we should have expected no less.

China cutting back on

This is a very significant sign and not necessarily a good one for anyone. Obviously Western consumers are cutting back due to the credit crisis. This is a necessity but not a good sign for the US economy that relies on consumers shopping 24x7. Related to such cutbacks is a report from Rio Tinto (large mining corporation) that China is trimming its demand. They need to produce less, so need less, that much is easy to understand.
What is going to cause problems moving forward is China's already stressed out economy that requires adding new factories and hiring from the countryside. The growth in the economy has been thanks to ever-expanding export markets (where consumers have readily available money to buy) and money being pumped into feeding this giant factory machine. During this time China has struggled with often violent dissension in the countryside. When times are going well, it's easy enough to spread the cash around to throw at problems but it's less obvious how China will address a falling market. Less fast money and few jobs does not bode well for China's future. An unstable China is not going to be a positive development for China or the West.

hyperinflation coming?
Got this message from a friend who has been very prescient about the financial situation for several years now and she has been talking about hyperinflation coming...and I know Glenn Beck's main job is to incite and scare but this is truly scary stuff... and the message is coming from more reliable quarters apparently...
Well, I'm no fan of Glenn Beck, but occasionally he has an interesting
interview. Check out this interview with Peter Schiff:

maggiesboy dream and the supreme court
i too wake up early but i don't have dogs (non-sequitur good morning, only two cups of coffee so far)
your dream about mccain having some kind of seizure in the middle of a blog interview which reveals his humanity to you and in turns triggers in you (asleep on the couch) a recognition of common human fellowship to include even such an unsympathetic and unworthy character -
all i can say about this is that politics has become too much of an emotional investment for many of us in this season, no, not season, for me it's been the last 8 years. I was not involved in politics during the clinton years, nor the bush one years, though i remember getting pissed off during the regan years, I had a kid to raise, relationships' woes, career concerns, in short, a life, and politics was in the background. It's been in the forefront since 1998, if i have to put a specific date on it, since the monica levinsky bullshit started, which alerted me for the first time to the serious viciousness and dangerous streak of the modern republican party; i saw it as an attempted coup, an assassination by other means, a way to kneecap a president whom i thought was doing a decent job, yes i was still naive but with good instincts i think, because what i was sensing about the GOP (sliding into fascism) was correct. Where i was naive is in the fact that i should have recognized that this didn't start in 1998, but much earlier, and it's actually been bubbling under the surface like forever in american history (yes my historic knowledge is shaky as witnessed by my 4th of july flop)
gee, i'd better take a breath
and just cut to the chase and get to the supreme court thoughts
early mornings dreams, nightmares and forebodings - what's the first thing that pops into my head when i wake up... lingering worries about some problem at work, just picking up from where i was last night, what's happening in media, in politics, on tv, on the blog, and it's been grim, i don't know why exactly, even with obama doing well in the poll, this undercurrent of dark stuff loose in the country - yes, the palin ugliness... i swear it's tough getting out of bed sometimes (coffee helps)
but this morning the first thought was a fastforward to february 2009 - obama is president and yes, the palin dogs, the neonazis are still on the loose, but now there is a sudden onslaught of supreme court justices' retirements, leaving the door open to an amazing 6 new slots! even - unexpectedly justice roberts had a stroke (so young, what a pity, who could have predicted?) maybe the election returns did it, ah ah. These decent judges (resigning or dying out) who were ripe for retirement 8 years ago but postponed it for the good of the country, now they can do it with a good conscience.
so i am looking at a new and imperfect president obama, a decent man with a good grasp of law and justice nominating somebody who actually might care about law and justice; and a democratic majority in both houses of congress which will support his choices
the long slow process of undoing the ugliness can begin
well that's enough for me to get me out of bed this morning
hyperinflation coming?
it seems odd hearing all this fear and panic coming from an asshat like beck when its his party and his philosophy that have created this mess.
i left the vid playing in the background after listening to half. of course when he gets to the end he has to get his dig in at roosevelt and democrats. personally, i don't see whats wrong with price controls and slapping heavy penalties on people and companies that gouge.
doesn't that make you wanna scream? Bastards!
Paulson Lacks Leverage to Force Banks to Put Federal Cash Infusion to Work Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson persuaded nine major U.S. banks to accept $125 billion in government investment. Getting them to lend it out may prove a tougher sell.
I say, nationalize! let the government, with the banks' money, make the loans directly, cut the dirty sleazy middle man, (the banks) (poor babys they had to be persuaded to accept 125 billion but now they are just taking their marbles and going home, they won't play)
The long slow process of undoing the ugliness can begin
Is that too much to ask ? Hell No !
If we had any Democrat Leaders who weren't scared of their own shadows it wouldn't have gotten this bad..
Jeebus,I hope alot of them get replaced with Better Democrats..
Pelosi,Reid,Conyers and Leahy..The usual suspects..
No backbone,weak leadership..
Just letting the fascists do what they want..When they want..
Hell, they should be having Impeachment Hearings right now
especially after the latest news that The NSA was wiretapping everyday Americans,Aid Workers and the Military !
Bush Lied Again About This..Kick His Fascists Ass Out Of Office !
But no..The Democrats will wait and give the Rethugs a chance to steal the elections again..
What rule of Law ? It makes me sick..Pathetic !

with Bush yesterday? He reminds me of that man, when you are a child, you instinctively want to stay far away from.
I can't believe he is back in power in Italy. But I understand how it would happen since it happened here and I never thought it would happen here.
You are right about the undercurrents here and if we don't watch out and be alert and prepare, it will come to the surface again. We have to watch what these people are doing and try to stop it before it gets to far.

David Gregory cherry picks polls to favor McCain

Look at these two screen shots from David Gregory's show "Race to the White House" today (Tuesday 10/15). Notice something strange? The Virgina poll is over two weeks old, and the North Carolina poll is nine days old. And what do you know, both show McCain with a small lead! Why rely on old data? Maybe because the newer ones conflict with the McCain "Comeback" storyline?
Here are the current trends in Virginia:

Investors looking to sue companies such as Lehman Brothers and AIG for fraud after the banking collapse may be out of luck. The 1995 Private Securities Litigation Reform Act places the burden of proof on the investors, making it all but impossible for shareholders to get their money back. Private sector loans, not Fannie or Freddie, triggered crisis
David Goldstein and Kevin G. Hall | McClatchy Newspapers
last updated: October 12, 2008 10:13:10 PM
WASHINGTON — As the economy worsens and Election Day approaches, a conservative campaign that blames the global financial crisis on a government push to make housing more affordable to lower-class Americans has taken off on talk radio and e-mail.
Commentators say that's what triggered the stock market meltdown and the freeze on credit. They've specifically targeted the mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which the federal government seized on Sept. 6, contending that lending to poor and minority Americans caused Fannie's and Freddie's financial problems.
Federal housing data reveal that the charges aren't true, and that the private sector, not the government or government-backed companies, was behind the soaring subprime lending at the core of the crisis.
Subprime lending offered high-cost loans to the weakest borrowers during the housing boom that lasted from 2001 to 2007. Subprime lending was at its height from 2004 to 2006.
Federal Reserve Board data show that:
More than 84 percent of the subprime mortgages in 2006 were issued by private lending institutions.
Private firms made nearly 83 percent of the subprime loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers that year.
Only one of the top 25 subprime lenders in 2006 was directly subject to the housing law that's being lambasted by conservative critics.
The "turmoil in financial markets clearly was triggered by a dramatic weakening of underwriting standards for U.S. subprime mortgages, beginning in late 2004 and extending into 2007," the President's Working Group on Financial Markets reported Friday.
Conservative critics claim that the Clinton administration pushed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to make home ownership more available to riskier borrowers with little concern for their ability to pay the mortgages.
"I don't remember a clarion call that said Fannie and Freddie are a disaster. Loaning to minorities and risky folks is a disaster," said Neil Cavuto of Fox News.
Fannie, the Federal National Mortgage Association, and Freddie, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp., don't lend money, to minorities or anyone else, however. They purchase loans from the private lenders who actually underwrite the loans.
It's a process called securitization, and by passing on the loans, banks have more capital on hand so they can lend even more.
This much is true. In an effort to promote affordable home ownership for minorities and rural whites, the Department of Housing and Urban Development set targets for Fannie and Freddie in 1992 to purchase low-income loans for sale into the secondary market that eventually reached this number: 52 percent of loans given to low-to moderate-income families.
To be sure, encouraging lower-income Americans to become homeowners gave unsophisticated borrowers and unscrupulous lenders and mortgage brokers more chances to turn dreams of homeownership in nightmares.
But these loans, and those to low- and moderate-income families represent a small portion of overall lending. And at the height of the housing boom in 2005 and 2006, Republicans and their party's standard bearer, President Bush, didn't criticize any sort of lending, frequently boasting that they were presiding over the highest-ever rates of U.S. homeownership.

big range....
Are you having to take precautions?
What precautions, you say?
I don't really know..sandbags? boarded windows?
------
The big rain range is due to several factors. First, if you look at a satellite picture of the storm, it dwarfs the islands. My former home is 22 miles long at the longest point and 5 miles wide at the widest point. Most of the rain will fall into the sea, so predicting the geographical pinpoints of heaviest and lightest rainfall is impossible.
Second, Omar has a lot of rain in him but, as most people now know, hurricanes have "rain bands" carrying torrential rain. The rain bands are, again, only a small portion of a much bigger storm.
Third, the forward speed of storms change unpredictably. If Omar stalls or slows while a rain band is over an island, the total rainfall will increase dramatically.
On my former island home (and, I assume, all islands), everyone with eyes and a brain knows where the flooding occurs. There is an added problem, though. The sea surge can flood coastal roads with salt water while the fresh water races down from the hills. Since it is all happening on an island, there is no "drive around it" route to travel from point A to point B. The flooding creates islands of non-flooded land within the island itself which isolates residents from, well, everything else.
Even when the flood waters recede, some areas of the coastal roads will be entirely covered with stones and shells and coral and sand, and some areas of the inland roads will be washed out or covered with debris.
...and none of this discussion addresses the wind (and tornado) problem. Omar might escalate to Category 2. That's when the real fun begins. If my island friends haven't boarded and battened-down the hatches by now...and moved their cars away from trees and their boats to "hurricane holes"...and stocked water and food, they are pushing their luck.

Russians Invade Alaska
Gov. Palin has spent the last six weeks telling us she's on lookout if Russia tries to mount an invasion of the US through Alaska. But while she's down here in the Lower 48 trying to get her crowds to think that Barack Obama is in league with Muslim terrorists, the Russians themselves just landed in Anchorage. According to Bloomberg, more or less the entire senior management of the Russian oil and gas monopoly Gazprom just showed up in Alaska to meet with Palin's Department of Natural Resources and the CEO of ConocoPhillips to see if they can get in on that big pipeline projects she keeps bragging about that she says is going to lead us to energy independence.
