Sarah Palin got her facts wrong in Thursday's debate with Joe Biden when
discussing where John McCain stands on new protections for homeowners facing
foreclosures.

The Alaska governor incorrectly made it sound like McCain supports giving
bankruptcy judges the power to rewrite mortgage payment terms on first homes.

He doesn't.

The McCain campaign confirms to ABC News that Palin misstated McCain's
position.

Car bomb in South Ossetia capital

The commander of Russia's peacekeeping forces in South Ossetia's has said that a car bomb has exploded near his troop's headquarters in Tskhinvali, the capital of the separatist region, killing seven Russian peacekeepers and injuring seven others.

Friday's blast comes amid persistent tension following Russia's war with Georgia over South Ossetia.

Major-general Marat Kulakhmetov said that a car that had been confiscated in an ethnic Georgian village after weapons were found in it had exploded near a building where leaders of the Russian peacekeeping force were located.

Kulakhmetov said: "Seven servicemen died, another seven were wounded."

He said that the peacekeepers, who are deployed in the breakaway region and a swathe of Georgian territory outside it, had detained two cars in the Georgian village of Ditsa.

Mexico protesters clash with police

At least 18 people have been injured in clashes between Mexican police and demonstrators marking the 40th anniversary of a student massacre.

More than 30,000 people turned out on the streets of Mexico City on Thursday to demand justice for student protesters killed by Mexican security forces in a 1968 demonstration.

The demonstrators were marking the anniversary of a massacre in Tlatelolco, when Mexican security forces opened fire on an 8,000-strong political protest.

Between 44 and 300 pro-democracy activists are believed to have died in the police attack.

The Mexican police covered up evidence of the atrocities, which came 10 days before the 1968 summer Olympic games.

Forty years after the attack in Tlatelolco, the full details of the massacre remain mired in mystery. No individuals have been prosecuted for their role in the killings.

More than just Democrat and Republican

Friday, October 3, 2008
Emily McIntosh, Staff Writer

The past several weeks have been nothing but politics on radio and TV broadcasts because of the Democratic and Republican conventions and political ads attacking opposing parties. One would think that the two parties would give the voters a bit of a breather in between the conventions and all the buzz and hype to soak up what the candidates stand for. Though most people now clearly know who the candidates are and their long awaited running mates, what about the other parties that have places on the presidential ticket? You know, like the Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party. Not familiar with those two? How about the Green Party or the Independent Party? Usually, when people think about "the third party," they think of the Green and Independent parties, but they know fairly little about them and even less about the Libertarian and Constitution parties.

Running for the Independent Party are Ralph Nadar for president and Matt Gonzalez for vice-president. Yes, Nadar is running again, this time on an Independent ticket instead of Green. The Independent Party can be summed up in a few words: Vote for who and what you like with or without a party backing you.

Some things Nadar and Gonzalez are running for are single payer health care and energy conservation focused on solar not nuclear power. They are also for getting more workers rights, like better pay and more benefits. Part of the workers rights is getting health benefits for temporary and part-time workers, according to www.votenadar.org.

This election year has definitely been a melting pot of candidates with a woman and an African American running for president and now Gov. Sarah Palin for a vice-presidential hopeful. What would the American people think of a black woman presidential candidate and a Latina woman for a running mate? That is exactly what the Green Party has done for this election.

Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente are the Green Party's pick for the White House. If you don't know, the Green Party is something of a branch of the Democratic Party with an emphasis on human rights.

According to the Green Party's Web site (www.votetruth08.com), McKinney was elected the first black congresswoman in Georgia in 1992. The McKinney campaign is all for universal health care and helping those who are suffering and in need.

The lesser known parties, the Libertarian and Constitution parties, seem to be extremes of opposite ends of the spectrum. You probably thought the Republican and Democrat parties were extreme enough.

...

According to the Arkansas Secretary of State's Web site, all of the mentioned candidates will be on the November ballot including Gloria La Riva and Eugene Puryear for the Socialism and Liberation Party.

So, just in case Barack Obama and John McCain don't float your boat as a good future president, you can keep these others in mind.

Nader Speaks in Downtown Santa Cruz

...
Though Nader was well received by the large audience, a few protesters picketed outside holding signs including “Every vote for Nader is a vote for McCain.”
Jack Ferguson, a self-proclaimed “Nader Raider,” could not disagree more with the accusation that Nader’s candidacy hurts a Democrats’ chances of winning the general election.

“That’s contemptible; anybody’s got the right to run. If the Democrats can’t hold their election together, that’s their problem,” said Ferguson, a 15-year supporter of Nader. “I always write him in even if he is not on the ballot.”
Leflore Cunningham Walsh, 22, a member on the National Board of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, sees the two party system as inherently undemocratic.

“I really believe in third-party platforms,” Walsh said after Nader’s speech. “I believe that the two-party system is really corrupt and is controlled by corporate America, as this evening talked about, and I really feel that Ralph Nader has set a strong precedent for protecting the American people and the American country as a whole, including our environmental standards.”

Remember when $700 billion

Remember when $700 billion was considered lot of money?

Hey guys, did I tell you...

I took the kiddos to work at Obama's campaign office last Saturday. They and my 10 yo's bff stuffed and rubberstamped envelopes for mailing to people wanting to know more about his stand on issues.

I sat at the reception desk, took money, sold signs and bumper stickers, and signed up volunteers. In return, I was given a BEAUTIFUL poster that was hand-drawn by an artist in California with a picture of Harry S. at the top of the poster, centered in between Obama's and Joe's mug, with the Arch in there, and at the bottom, a list of their platform issues. I ran it straight to hobby lobby to be framed.

The children each received beautiful large 5'7' stickers that had Obama's face highlighted in different colors, with the word "HOPE" at the bottom. They stuck them on their school planners.

Those people are so sweet, you know? We may go back out there this weekend...

so i wonder

Luis Posada Carriles
In Central America, Posada was assigned as deputy to Félix Rodríguez, a CIA operative who had overseen the capture and execution of Ernesto "Che" Guevara in 1967. The pair were to coordinate drops of military supplies to the Contras, a paramilitary collective opposed to the leftist Sandinistas in Nicaragua. Posada was paid $3000 per month plus expenses from U.S. Major General Richard Secord, who was directing operations for Oliver North.[15] The subsequent Iran-Contra investigations cast light over U.S. operations in the region, and several of Posada's connections, including Félix Rodríguez were asked to testify.
In 1997, Posada was again implicated in a series of terrorist bombings in Cuba intended to deter the growing tourism trade on the island. An Italian, Fabio di Celmo, was killed and 11 people wounded as a result.

Orlando Bosch
In 1987, almost a decade after the Flight 455 incident, Bosch was freed from Venezuelan charges and went to the United States, assisted by US Ambassador to Venezuela Otto Reich; there, he was ultimately arrested for a parole violation. Bosch was detained in the United States for six months until all charges were dropped and he was able to live in the United States freely. Although many assume he was pardoned by President Bush, this is inaccurate.[6] Bosch was merely released after Cuban-Americans pressured Jeb Bush to have his father intervene on Bosch's behalf.[7] "Although many countries seek Bosch's extradition he remains free in the United States. The political pressure to grant Bosch a pardon began during the congressional campaign run by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, herself a Cuban American, and overseen by her campaign manager Jeb Bush

The Bush Doctrine? [transcript] As long as we're dropping them as a deterrent, well ok.

IFILL: Governor, on another issue, interventionism, nuclear weapons. What should be the trigger, or should there be a trigger, when nuclear weapons use is ever put into play?

PALIN: Nuclear weaponry, of course, would be the be all, end all of just too many people in too many parts of our planet, so those dangerous regimes, again, cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, period.

Our nuclear weaponry here in the U.S. is used as a deterrent. And that's a safe, stable way to use nuclear weaponry.

Well, another step toward Socialism. I wonder how long it's going to be before Wall Street needs another fix of taxpayer money?

Palin Calls a Whaaaambulance...

For the record, Couric asked her, among other things, what type of news sources she turns to for information, which Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, why Alaska's proximity to Russia gave her foreign policy experience, her opinion of the bailout package for Wall Street, and where she thought Vice President Dick Cheney erred. Which one of those questions was designed to trip her up (as opposed to, say, give viewers a better sense of her character and views) is tough to ascertain.

...

Appearing on a friendlier news outlet, Gov. Sarah Palin said she was "annoyed" with the way Katie Couric handled their interview and complained that the CBS Evening News host failed to give her the opportunity to take a proverbial axe to Barack Obama.

In a portion of her sit-down with Fox News correspondent Carl Cameron, Palin claimed that Couric's questions -- which produced a series of staggeringly embarrassing responses -- put her in a lose-lose position.

"The Sarah Palin in those interviews was a little bit annoyed," she said. "It's like, man, no matter what you say, you are going to get clobbered. If you choose to answer a question, you are going to get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to try to pivot and go to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about, you get clobbered for that too."

~-~-~

No honey, you're just upset because your "answers" when you gave them were seen as beyond the realm of "dumb blonde," and the moose-in-headlights, non-answers of "I'll bring 'em to ya!" and "Ummmmmm..." didn't sit well with most people. No one to blame but yourself for not realizing Katie Couric is a Stealth-Liberal-Nazi hellbent on taking down America as we know it.

I am not taking a definite position either way, only saying that La Jornada (a center-left paper out of Mexico City and hosted by the major university there [I'm sure you know this]) seems to agree with the assessment that the violent people in the commemoration were "porros" (organized right-wing infiltrators).

La Jornada reports that this group:

"rompieron vitrinas, destruyeron teléfonos públicos, realizaron pintas, saquearon comercios y agredieron a transeúntes, policías y representantes de medios de comunicación"

"they broke shop windows, destroyed public telephones, (spray?) painted, looted businesses and attacked passersby, police and representatives of the media."

In other words, if this is true, it wasn't the people who were peacefully making chalk outlines to commemorate the murdered activists of 68 with whom the police clashed. It was a group of people trying to fuck things up.

The story also said that the university organizers got news there would be such "infiltrators" involved in their planning for the event. Of the twenty arrested, 11 were 16 and 17 year olds.

Chomsky: "The Majority of the World Supports Iran"

The fact of the matter is that the majority of the world supports Iran. The non-aligned movement supports Iran. The majority of the world is part of the non-aligned movement. But they are not part of the world, from the U.S. point of view. It is a striking illustration of the strength and depth of the imperial mentality. If the majority of the world opposes Washington, they are not part of the world. Strikingly, the American population is not part of the world. A large majority of Americans -- something like 75 percent -- agree that Iran has the right to develop nuclear energy, if it is not for nuclear weapons. But they are not part of the world either. The world consists of Washington and whoever goes along with it. Everything else is not the world. Not the majority of Americans. Not the majority of countries of the world.

Dead on as usual--

Judging "how the candidates did" is rather like weighing in on the wittiness of the libretto of "Big Brother" or the pace of character development in the latest episode of "Keeping up with the Kardashians." The genre of the political review assumes that both candidates are credible in their roles. It becomes self-parody when one candidate is a ditzy nonentity cynically foisted on the public in the same way a 'reality show' is, based on a targeted demographic and without regard to quality.

It reminded me of the excruciating first episodes every season of "American Idol," when a single candidate is found who has the voice of an angel and then everyone else auditioned sounds like fingernails on a blackboard.

The news organizations and civic groups that sponsor political debates have allowed the campaigns to push them around so vigorously that nothing like a debate is any longer possible. The Bushies even tried to force the networks to hide the fact that John Kerry was taller than his rival in 2004. It is not about debating but about how your candidate looks on television....

The Gay Angle of the VP Debate.
Last night I had a meeting at the NYC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, so I was unable to watch the debate from home or liveblog it. Fortunately, the Center did broadcast the debate from their large auditorium, selling booze and pizza... (Thank God for the booze!)

There were about 150 or so people watching on a large screen TV. And just to give you an idea of the political makeup of the GLBT center, earlier that day, they had a forum for the various political parties to speak to the community. The attendees were:

Tobias Wolff, Chair of Barack Obama's Democratic National LGBT Policy Committee, representing Barack Obama/Joe Biden

Dan Schaffer, Former State Committee Member of the Green Party, representing Cynthia McKinney/Rosa Clemente

Jinnette Caceres, NYC Branch Organizer and Member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, representing Gloria La Riva/Eugene Puryear

As you can imagine, it was a very different experience watching the crowd cheer everything (well not everything) Biden said and boo, hiss and curse out at everything Palin said. At one point in the evening, when one of the more obnoxious attendees kept loudly cursing at Sarah Palin preventing anyone around her from hearing the debate, I calmly said, "She can't hear you." She lowered her voice. Note: The assumption in the room was everyone was an Obama supporter, and I did nothing stupid like indicate I would be voting for McCain.

Certainly, I expected that this location would be supportive of Obama, but I was struck by the intensity of the hatred for Sarah Palin. The best example was the question on gay marriage/civil unions. Both Biden and Palin expressed identical opinions in their support for civil unions and rejection of gay marriage. (It would have been nice had Palin mentioned her veto of a law which would have discriminated against gay couples). Of course, a chorus of boos rained down on Palin, and silence for Joe Biden when he spoke out against gay marriage. Just to have some fun, I booed Joe Biden at his anti-gay stance, and got about 20 people to join in. :)

One thing I am sure of... not a single person in that room changed their vote as a result of the debate.

Economy sheds most jobs since 2003, more cuts seen

The Old Piss Down Theory working it's magic again !

By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - Jobs are vanishing at the fastest pace in more than five years with pink slips likely to keep stacking higher in the months ahead, an urgent signal the country may be careening toward a deep and painful recession just as Americans prepare to elect a new president.

Whether that's Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain, one of them will be dealing with the weakest employment climate in years.

Increasingly skittish employers dropped the ax even harder in September, chopping payrolls by 159,000 — more than double the cuts made just one month before. It was the ninth straight month of job losses. A staggering 760,000 jobs have disappeared so far this year.

The Labor Department's report, released Friday, also showed that the nation's unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, up sharply from 4.7 percent a year ago. Over the last year, the number of unemployed people has risen by 2.2 million to 9.5 million.

Obama's Lead Keeps Growing

Obama's Lead Keeps Growing In Tracking Polls
By Eric Kleefeld - October 3, 2008, 1:07PM
Here's a wrap-up of the four major national tracking polls for today, showing Barack Obama expanding his lead even further:

• Gallup: Obama 49%, McCain 42%, with a ±2% margin of error, compared to a 48%-43% Obama lead yesterday.

• Rasmussen: Obama 51%, McCain 44%, with a ±2% margin of error, unchanged from yesterday.

• Hotline/Diageo: Obama 48%, McCain 42%, with a ±3.2% margin of error, compared to a 47%-42% Obama lead yesterday.

• Research 2000: Obama 51%, McCain 40%, with a ±3% margin of error, the same as yesterday.

Adding these polls together and weighting them by sample sizes, Obama is ahead 49.9%-42.5%, even wider than his lead yesterday of 49.4%-42.9%.

Bear in mind that these three-day surveys were conducted before last night's vice-presidential debate. As such, they don't tell us what effect -- if any -- that the debate had on the race. But what they do give us is a baseline for determining that effect as we see more polls over the next few days.

"It is almost as though she's autistic..."

It doesn't matter in the end. She's corrupt and unqualified and far right AND(if you even have to go there after all that) mean and manipulative and socially insensitive. It's a shame that people have to present others with a brand/diagnosis, as if having that word attached to her is what disqualifies her, and not her lack of experience, intellectual mediocrity and behavior/attitudes.

I understand where it's coming from, but even with John McCain, it scares me a little that it is supposed to make so much difference whether or not he will release his health records. Why should a specific prognosis or diagnosis disqualify somebody for a job so much more than what any honest person with a half a brain can see with their own eyes?

It's a little frustrating, is all. It's like you can bullshit your way into any job you want, unless you have the misfortune of being branded as disabled and/or ill--that's the deal breaker.

The House passed the Senate's rescue/bailout bill and the President just sign it. While the Senate's draft added perks which benefit, among others, the wool, rum and children's wooden arrow industry, the House's change of heart was actually due to calls from constituents. Apparently, Americans who had been furious at the thought of bailing out "fat cats," changed their minds after the stock market tanked. How about you? Why did you change your mind? Take our poll.

America, what made you change your mind about the bailout?

Justice Inspector General:

Justice Inspector General: Rove needs to answer to prosecutor
Nick Juliano and David Edwards

While he was able to compile a nearly 400-page report exposing the fundamentally flawed, politically motivated processes that led to the unjustified firings of nine US Attorneys, Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine says more details of the scandal remain unknown.

Officials like Karl Rove and Harriet Miers, who have refused to cooperate with separate investigations from the IG and Congress, should be compelled to answer to a federal prosecutor, Fine told lawmakers Friday.

Rove, Miers and several other White House officials refused to cooperate making it impossible "to fully investigate all of the reasons for the removal of the US attorneys," Fine told the House Judiciary Committee, responding to questions about his lengthy report released Monday.

"We were not able to uncover all the facts," he said, "and we believe the prosecutor ought to look at them."

Attorney General Michael Mukasey has appointed a special prosecutor to follow up on Fine's report.

Seven Russian troops die in Ossetia car bomb attack: officials

Seven Russian soldiers were killed on Friday in an apparent car bomb attack near the Russian force headquarters in the volatile Georgian separatist region of South Ossetia, Russian and local officials said.

"Seven servicemen were killed, seven others were wounded," Major-General Marat Kulakhmetov told Interfax news agency in the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali where Russian troops are based and where the attack occurred.

The wounded were evacuated by helicopter and taken to defence ministry hospitals in Russia, the report quoted him as saying.

Local officials in the rebel province said the Russian soldiers were killed after security forces seized from Georgian citizens a suspect automobile that turned out to be packed with explosives that blew up near their main base.

The leader of the rebel province, Eduard Kokoity, immediately blamed the attack on Georgia, an accusation Tbilisi promptly rejected.

"This was an attack planned by the Georgian Ministry of National Security," Kokoity told Russia's state-run ITAR-TASS news agency in Tskhinvali.

Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashivili denied any Georgian involvement.

"I think this is a provocation with the aim of keeping Russian forces in Georgia," Utiashvili told AFP in Tbilisi.

The apparent attack marked the most serious violence in the region since the brief war that broke out in South Ossetia in August between Russia and Georgia.

Fred Armisen has the Obama "look" pegged pretty well, but the mannerisms and speaking impression need some work.

Woman, 90, shoots self inside foreclosed home

"A 90-year-old Akron, Ohio, woman who shot herself as sheriff's deputies tried to evict her from her foreclosed home became a symbol of the nation's home mortgage crisis Friday.

Fannie Mae foreclosed on the Akron, Ohio, home of Addie Polk, 90, after acquiring the mortgage in 2007.

Addie Polk is being treated at Akron General Medical Center after shooting herself at least twice in the upper body Wednesday afternoon, her city councilman said.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, mentioned Polk on the House floor Friday during debate over the latest economic rescue proposal.

"This bill does nothing for the Addie Polks of the world," Kucinich said after telling her story. "This bill fails to address the fact that millions of homeowners are facing foreclosure, are facing the loss of their home. This bill will take care of Wall Street, and the market may go up for a few days, but democracy is going downhill."

Vintage Hot Wheels Helps

Vintage Hot Wheels Helps Finance Down Payment on House

Collectibles: Hot Wheels Are Hot Moneymakers

http://www.worthpoint.com/editorial/collectibles-hot-wheels-are-hot-mone...

What do you do when presented with 35 cases of toy collectibles? You sell about 25% of them for a down payment on a house and squirrel away the rest for a rainy day, of course.

This is exactly what my friend, Erik, did when his mother gave him 35 unopened cases of vintage Hot Wheels 12 years ago. Now that the financial outlook for most of us is not as rosy as it was just a year or even a week ago, that rainy day may be coming sooner than later.

While Hot Wheels were first produced in 1968—making it Hot Wheels’ 40th anniversary—this particular story of Hot Wheels collectibles begins in 1973. Erik’s parents have been owner/operators of a string Shell gas stations in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 40 years.

In ’73, Shell held a promotion, in conjunction with Mattel, offering a free Hot Wheels car with a fill-up. In the beginning, 10 specially selected Hot Wheels styles were handed out in a plastic bag printed with the Shell logo. Shell bought the cars from Mattel, and station owners, in turn, bought the cars directly from Shell, already in the collectibles bags.

1970 Spoilers (left) and a blistered-pack California custom (right)

But the well-planned promotion had grown into a marketing monster. The demand for the cars was so great, Shell couldn’t print enough of the bags, and Mattel couldn’t supply enough of the 10 designated styles of Hot Wheels. So the toy company started shipping whatever they had in stock to the oil giant, which included Hot Wheels manufactured as early as the inaugural year.

When the promotion ended, Erik’s parents had some 40 cases left over, and they wound up in the attic. Now, Erik knew of the toys in the attic, and they weren’t exactly left alone up there untouched. “When I was a kid, I’d sneak up there and take out a few to play with every now and then, or to use some as birthday presents,” says Erik.

Looking for a down payment? Check the attic.

In the mid-1990s, when Erik and his wife were looking to move out of a condo and buy a house, his mother gave him the remaining 35 cases of Hot Wheels to see if they were worth anything. Boy, were they.

At first, a business associate of Erik’s father wanted to know if the family had any Hot Wheels left. A Hot Wheels collector, he was looking to make an easy score and offered $20 a car. Each case contained 96 cars, so the haul would have been an easy $67,200—more than enough for a down payment on a house, even in the spectacularly expensive Bay Area.

HAHAHAHAHA....kooky talk...

The event was besieged with problems beginning just a few weeks before the scheduled event at the Los Angeles State Historic Park located just south of Downtown LA.

The event organizers were put under an enormous amount of pressure after certain political entities became abusive over the event artwork, and the choice of speakers to attend. The police were “concerned” that a riot could ensue if we spoke to the 5,000 plus crowd. (Many more would’ve been at the event which could hold 20,000 if the police did not block the entrance after they decided too many people were gathered together with “anti - government” opinions.) Palin's debate LIE on Sudan

During the VP debate Palin played up her foreign policy credentials by claiming credit for efforts to remove assets owned by the Sudanese government from the Alaskan multi-billion-dollar investment fund.

The truth is in fact very different

"The [Palin] administration killed our bill," said Alaska state representative Les Gara, D-Anchorage. Gara and state Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage, co-sponsored a resolution early this year to force the Alaska Permanent Fund – a $40 billion investment fund, a portion of whose dividends are distributed annually to state residents – to divest millions of dollars in holdings tied to the Sudanese government.

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Story?id=5948944&page=1

Palin's team eventually dropped their opposition to the bill-but it was their forestalling which had prevented it being passed.

Like the bridge to nowhere-this is another prime example of Palin wanting to take full credit for a popular stance whilst banking on no one checking her past record.

Holt: Bailout Package

Holt: Bailout Package Doesn’t Address The ‘Heart Of The Problem’ — People ‘Saddled With Bad Mortgages’
In an interview with ThinkProgress today, Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) said he had concerns with the way Congress rushed through the bailout package. “There should have been more deliberation,” he said. “It would have been better if there been hearings…and had a somewhat more open process.”

Holt noted that voting down the proposal on Monday didn’t actually improve the substance of the bill. But like his Democratic colleague Rep. Chet Edwards (D-TX), Holt voted for the bailout package despite his reservations:

It will do some good. It will not be the cure-all. It’s not the bill I hoped for and have worked for and am still working for. But it has some merits.

He added that the bailout plan is “more good than bad,” but said the new law is “not the most efficient way” to deal with the financial crisis. Holt took issue with critics who say the bill expands the scope of executive power. “I actually don’t see it as a major transfer of power. It’s a transfer of $700 billion,” he argued. Listen here:

“if you were trying to help ordinary Americans,” Holt explained, “then why don’t we actually go to the heart of the problem that we’re trying to solve here.” The “root” of cause, he said, is people who are “saddled with bad mortgages.” “By doing that, we would not only be draining the poison from Wall Street…but we would be actually helping the home owners, helping the neighborhoods, helping the towns.”

Holt is pushing a proposal backed by the Center for American Progress to enact a program like FDR’s Great Depression program, the Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC). Holt noted that the government put up today’s equivalent of $70 billion. “It stemmed the mortgage crisis of that day,” he said, and it “actually ended up in the black — it ended up in a net return to taxpayers.”

How Political Warfare in Missouri Led to Prosecutor's Firing

CREW:

3 Oct 2008 // In Missouri, evidently, Republican politics are exceptionally bloody, with clans fighting like rival mobs whose carnage spreads to other locales and sweeps in innocent civilians.

This is what former U.S. attorney Todd P. Graves discovered when he was ousted in January 2006 by the Justice Department. He got his first inkling of trouble in 2004 not from the department, but from an aide to Sen. Christopher S. Bond (R-Mo.), whose office was then embroiled in a bitter dispute with Graves's brother, a U.S. congressman.

In a telephone call, the aide angrily warned Graves that if he did not intervene on Bond's behalf -- against his brother's chief of staff -- the senator "could no longer protect [his] job." Graves refused, and a little over a year later, he was bounced from his Kansas City office after Bond's staff made repeated complaints to the White House counsel's office.

JUDGE OKs SCRUTINY OF ABRAMOFF VISITS TO WHITE HOUSE

CREW:

3 Oct 2008 // WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has rejected attempts by the Bush administration to shield records that may shed light on the visits by now imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff to the White House in 2001 and 2004.

In several orders this week, U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth sided with watchdog groups Judicial Watch and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, which are suing the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security for access to the logs.

The administration in 2006 agreed to produce all responsive records about the visits "without redactions or claims of exemption." But it soon argued that the contents of certain "Sensitive Security Records," which are created in the course of conducting more extensive background checks on particular White House visitors, cannot be publicly revealed even though they could show some of Abramoff's visits.

CHENEY PETITIONS COURT TO BLOCK ADDINGTON DEPOSITION

CREW:

1 Oct 2008 // Washington, D.C. - On the eve of the first scheduled deposition in CREW, et al. v. Cheney, et al., Vice President Cheney and the other defendants filed an emergency petition for a writ of mandamus with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Mandamus is an extraordinary remedy, and was filed here in an attempt to make the D.C. Circuit Court intrude directly into the district court litigation by demanding that the district court judge vacate her discovery orders.
This would eliminate the possibility of garnering evidence on White House policies on complying with record keeping obligations under the Presidential Records Act. The petition is based on a claim that the discovery authorized by the district court raises serious separation of powers concerns merely because the deponent is David Addington.

Anne Weismann, CREW’s chief counsel, said today, "The White House, having failed to convince the Court that it is saving all that the Presidential Records Act required, is now attempting to stop any further fact-finding in order to prevent the plaintiffs, the court and the American people from learning the truth."

The organization of the We the People festival was conceived due to a great need for a stimulant in social awareness and an encompassing platform within the urban community to inspire the involvement and active participation of the conscious urban youth populous throughout the country.

While providing a vastly artistic and intellectually satisfying array of talent at the concert series, The We the People festival's primary objective involves reaching out to the myriad of organizations, groups, like-minded promotion firms, and of course artists, in order to conceive the greatest arena in which to engage and then garner participation from a grossly uninformed youth audience, including all other age groups affected by contemporary matters that involve our communities.

By in large, the We the People festival aspires to continue to promote and suggest a much needed platform that calls for a voice for the youth of our nation and those artists they credit with acknowledging their daily struggles within the environments that surround them, socially, culturally and politically.

The "We the People" festival promotes non-partisan, non-violent, environmental and politically conscious views.

Democratic Georgia

Georgia's Saakashvili: freedom fighter or rights abuser?

TBILISI, Georgia — A large group of influential Georgian opposition leaders has mounted a blistering political campaign against U.S.-backed President Mikheil Saakashvili, accusing his government of running an autocratic regime that tramples human rights and stifles democracy.

The timing could embarrass the Bush administration, which is pressing NATO members to approve an action plan for Georgia — a key step toward full membership — at the organization's meeting in December.

Salome Zurabishvili, who previously served as foreign minister under Saakashvili.

"The balance has shifted," she said. "The main problem for Georgia is a lack of democracy."

Zurabishvili, like other opposition leaders, emphasized that she's pro-Western and doesn't support Russia, which seized two Georgian rebel enclaves and marched its forces within 25 miles of Tbilisi during the invasion.

"I think the big confusion in the American policy . . . is to confuse support for a country and its democracy with the support for a small group of people," Zurabishvili said of Saakashvili, a U.S.-educated lawyer, and his allies.

"He is building an authoritarian regime here," said Levan Gachechiladze, an opposition candidate for president earlier this year who finished second with about 25 percent of the vote. "The West closed its eyes because they were not ready . . . to change their so-called democratic star."

Saakashvili's unchecked centralization of power, people such as Gachechiladze maintain, allowed the president to launch an ill-advised military strike against the separatist region of North Ossetia in August. That move led to a five-day war with Russia that ended in crushing defeat.

Sozar Subari, the Georgian government's human-rights ombudsman, has documented what he terms severe human-rights abuses by government forces as well as elections in which police intimidated voters on a widespread basis and a corrupt elite that's allowed to use state offices to its own ends.

In several cases, Subari said in a report to parliament, armed men in ski masks beat up the administration's political enemies. He named two high-profile cases in 2005 and 2007. Subari said it was clear that the attackers were being protected from prosecution in such a way "that implies the involvement of several high-rank(ing) officials."

Sarah Palin is a joke

Two eskimos, a big one and a little one, go to their local Alaskan convent with a question. The big one nudges the little one and says, "Go ahead, knock on the door, knock on the door."

The Mother Superior answers the door. Again, the big eskimo nudges the little one and says, "Go ahead, ask her the question, ask her the question."

The little eskimo timidly says, "May we speak with the midget nun that lives here please?"

The Mother Superior answers, "There are no midget nuns living here."

The big eskimo starts nudging the little one again and says, "Go ahead, ask her the other question, ask her the other question."

The little eskimo asks in a quavering voice, "Well. Are there any midget nuns in Alaska?"

The Mother Superior responds uncertainly, "Why no, I don't believe so."

With this the big eskimo falls down and rolls on the ground, clutching his belly as he laughs uncontrollably. "See", he says to the little eskimo, "I told you you f**ked a penguin!"

14 Points of Fascism

12. Obsession with crime and punishment

Most of these regimes maintained Draconian systems of criminal justice with huge prison populations. The police were often glorified and had almost unchecked power, leading to rampant abuse. “Normal” and political crime were often merged into trumped-up criminal charges and sometimes used against political opponents of the regime. Fear, and hatred, of criminals or “traitors” was often promoted among the population as an excuse for more police power.

I believe that when the dust settles and everyone is looking back on the history of the current presidential campaigns, it will be said that McCain was a drowning candidate who tossed himself a picture of a life-preserver when he picked Palin.

I have no doubt that he could have picked a running mate who would have attracted more votes than Palin.

All other things being equal (no explosions in New York City and no major gaffe by Obama), I believe that McCain's chances of winning the election were slim all along the way.

Romney probably would have made a better showing. For the same reasons that I reject Romney, the Republican faithful would have loved him at this point in the campaign.

He's ReaganLite. The credit crisis would have helped his campaign by highlighting his perceived strength.

Oh, well. We'll see. I have been surprised by election results before.

Note to America's men: If

Note to America's men: If your brain resides in your nutsack, perhaps you aren't qualified to vote

http://brilliantatbreakfast.blogspot.com/2008/10/note-to-americas-men-if...

When I was in high school, someone very near and dear to me said that in males, the brain is located in the penis, and that as they get closer to adulthood, the brain migrates into the cranium, at which point the male is an adult. And he was in a position to know that this is true.

So what are we to make, then, of Rich Lowry, at the National Review, who thinks he's going to get to have sex with Sarah Palin because of "the wink":

I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.

OK, Lowry. First of all, Sarah Palin is not going to have sex with you. Second of all, are you aware of how pathetic this makes you look? Here you are, someone who actually gets paid for this, admitting that instead of having a real relationship, or even real sex, for that matter, with a real woman, you're spending your time on your couch fantasizing about Sarah Palin. I hate to break this to you, but Sarah Palin was not looking at you, and she was not winking at you. Sarah Palin is a middle-aged woman who is still attractive, but still thinks it's junior year and she's the new prom queen. And that wink got her elected prom queen by a bunch of high school boys whose gray matter was still located between their legs. So, Lowry, if yours still is, I suggest you seek the advice of a physician. Because that thing can get infected down there and when it does, it could be painful.

And by the way, I don't want to hear Dick Morris or the other idiots at Faux Noise talk about the "deep sexism" directed at Sarah Palin. Because the only people who are being sexist about Sarah Palin are a bunch of Republican men sitting alone in front of the TV with their trousers around their ankles.

U.S. announces Taiwan arms package

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration announced plans Friday to sell $6 billion in arms to Taiwan, a decision sure to anger Taiwan's rival China and one that could complicate stalled North Korean disarmament efforts.
The announcement of the package, which includes Apache helicopters and Patriot III anti-missile missiles, came in a notification to Congress posted on the Defense Security Cooperation Agency website. The State Department said lawmakers, who were expected to leave Friday to campaign for November elections, have 30 days to comment on the proposed sale. Without objections, the deal is completed.

The arms package enjoys support among senior lawmakers. China, however, vehemently opposes the U.S. provision of weapons to Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory and threatens to invade should the self-governing island ever formalize its de facto independence.

The United States and China are part of troubled six-nation negotiations to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons. A successful result to the stalled talks is an important foreign policy goal of the Bush administration in its remaining months in office. China, which hosts the talks, is seen as having economic and political leverage with the North.

The State Department said in a statement that the arms package, which also includes Harpoon missiles, Javelin missiles, upgrades for Taiwan's E-2T aircraft and spare parts for Taiwan's air force, is "a significant and tangible demonstration of the commitment of this administration to provide Taiwan the defensive arms its needs to be strong."

Palin tax returns for 2006

Palin tax returns for 2006 and 2007 released By RICHARD T. PIENCIAK, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 8 minutes ago

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sarah and Todd Palin underpaid their estimated taxes with an April extension and could owe interest, according to an Associated Press analysis of the couple's 2007 federal tax returns released Friday by the McCain campaign.

On an undated extension form filed with a $2,000 check dated April 11, the Palins claimed an estimated tax liability of $22,721 and total withholding payments of $20,721. The attached check meant the couple believed they had paid all of their taxes for 2007, as required.

However, when they filed their taxes last month, dated Sept. 3, their tax liability turned out to be $24,738 — meaning they owed an additional $2,017.

IRS rules require that when a taxpayer files for an extension in April, all outstanding taxes must be paid at that time.

When asked if the Palins had paid any interest or penalties, and if so, how much, Maria Comella, McCain-Palin spokeswoman said the couple had paid "at least $2,017," and that the campaign was researching if an additional payment had been made.

"In April, they made a reasonable estimate of what they would owe, and they underpaid," she added.

The documents released Friday by the McCain campaign contained a copy of the $2,000 check sent with the April extension, but there was no copy of any check that might have been sent when the tax return was ultimately filed on Sept. 3.

"They're going to be billed the interest," said Sheldon Cohen, former IRS commissioner under the Johnson administration. He said the Palins would likely avoid any penalties because their tax payments as of April for last year were higher than all payments made the prior year. "If they constantly underpaid, that would be another story."

Overall, the 2007 return shows that last year the couple had a gross adjusted income of $166,080 and paid $24,738 in taxes — about a 15 percent rate after deductions. In 2006, the records show, the Palins earned $127,869 as adjusted gross income, with taxes paid listed at $11,944 — less than a 10 percent rate.

On federal financial disclosure forms, also released Friday, Palin and her husband listed assets worth from $960,000 to $2.3 million. Because the values of assets are reported in broad ranges, it's not possible to calculate an exact value for their holdings.

Like many Americans, their most valuable asset is their home in Wasilla, valued at between $500,000 and $1 million. According to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, the land and structure at the Wasilla property is appraised at $552,100.

Their next most valuable asset is a fishing leasehold on the Nushagak River, worth between $100,000 and $250,000. Todd Palin's fishing business was valued at between $50,000 and $100,000, and his snowmobile racing enterprise was put at $15,000 to $50,000.

Todd Palin also has a retirement account worth between $50,000 and $100,000, and he owns a variety of mutual funds in a 401(k) retirement plan through his employer, the oil company BP. Sara Palin also has retirement accounts from the state of Alaska and the town of Wasilla, where she was once mayor, valued at a total of $115,000 to $250,000.

The Palins also own shares of two land parcels worth a combined $51,000 to $115,000.

On their tax returns, the Palins said they donated $8,105 to charity over the two years. The bulk of the donations came in "gifts by cash or check" — $4,250 in 2006 and $2,500 last year. For each year, the cash donations were identified only as "various."

Comella said the Palins gave the money to "local churches." She would not elaborate.

The Palins made noncash charitable contributions, claiming "thrift store value" of $825 for a Dec. 31, 2007, donation to the Salvation Army of Wasilla.

Who will be who in fascist overlords

If I understand Naomi Wolf's theory correctly, what she thinks is that they'll let the election go on in name but steal it for McCain. (W. will then indeed go Crawford or Paraguay or Dubai wherever he wants to go to fall off the wagon.) Then it'll be Rove + Cheney et al really running things just like now, only more so--and Palin will be their Evita, to provide "populist" cover.

My extrapolation: Doesn't really matter if McCain survives or not, considering he is growing more and more senile and/or insane by the millisecond. Anyways he probably already made a deal.

Pakistan claims "right to seek" N-deal with China

(RTTNews) - Islamabad announced its intention to strike a deal with its ally China similar to the Indo-US civilian nuclear treaty, immediately after the U.S. Senate approved it by more than the required three-fifth majority Wednesday.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani raised his country's claim for a corresponding deal because they "do not want there to be any discrimination."

Speaking to reporters in his hometown of Multan, Gialni called upon the world community to also "accommodate" Pakistan. He assured that there is "no need to worry" in Pakistan doing so.

He indicated that cooperation between the two countries in defense will increase when he visits China within weeks with President Asif Ali Zardari.

Gilani stressed the need to develop a joint strategy to bring prosperity, progress, and security to the region consisting of Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan.

When does your schooling

When does your schooling start, Bob.

I usually am a little cautionary to people who go to culinary school.

first, it is harder than most people think, some folk pick it cuz they think it'll be easy.

second, it seems like every city's idea of helping the homeless is to train them to be a fry cook.

but mainly, not everyone is really interested in cooking. Like my nephew, who at one point expressed the interest...he's skinny as a rail (didn't get that from my side of the family) and I can't ever recall seeing him cook anything more complicated than Top Ramen.

But you, Bob, Do have a genuine interest in cooking. I recall several , if not many, instances through the years of you talking about what you're cooking or asking questions on how to make this dish or that.

I wish you the best!!!

The Georgian Russian debacle:

Russia: US Warship In Black Sea, May Port In Georgia - Report

MOSCOW (AFP)--A U.S. navy destroyer with sophisticated missile defense systems has moved into the eastern Black Sea and may put into a port in Georgia, the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported Friday.

Quoting an unnamed Russian intelligence source, the agency said the USS Mason, the U.S. Navy's newest Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, had entered the Black Sea in mid-September.

"It is possible that the destroyer Mason may enter one of Georgia's ports in the coming days," the source said. "Why this vessel entered the Black Sea is not known."

The ship was commissioned in 2003. A U.S. Defense Department description available on the Internet says it "contains a myriad of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime defense needs well into the 21st century."

Neither the U.S. nor Russia routinely comment on movements of U.S. warships. Russia however has recently showed high sensitivity to U.S. naval activity in the wake of its conflict with Georgia in August.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have since then angrily questioned U.S. motives in using warships to send humanitarian aid to Georgia, accusing Washington of re-arming Tblisi.

Russia also deployed warships from its Black Sea Fleet in the area during the conflict with Georgia.

FEMA Not Immune From Toxic Trailer Suits
A federal judge says the government isn't immune from lawsuits claiming many Gulf Coast hurricane victims were exposed to potentially dangerous fumes while living in trailers it provided.

Friday's ruling says there is evidence that the Federal Emergency Management Agency delayed its response to concerns about formaldehyde levels in its trailers due to liability concerns. The preservative can cause breathing problems and is classified as a carcinogen.

Lawyers for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita have accused FEMA of negligence.

But the judge says the agency is shielded from liability over its decision to shelter tens of thousands of people in the trailers in the first place after the 2005 hurricanes.

Credit markets to Washington: Bailout isn't enough

NEW YORK - The credit markets finally got a bailout bill, but the stranglehold hasn't let up — a troubling sign that lenders and investors believe the package will only be a baby step in the long road to economic recovery.

The credit markets, where companies go to get cash loans, have seized up since the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and in anticipation of the $700 billion plan initially voted down by the House. The House passed a revised version of it Friday following the Senate's approval earlier this week, but anxiety about its effectiveness kept demand for Treasury bills high and nearly nonexistent for other types of debt.

Overall, market participants have begun regarding the rescue plan as a medicine for what's ailing the financial system, but not a cure-all.

Some are worried, though, that the plan will not work at all.

GM to shut Ohio SUV plant by end of 2008 (1200 jobs gone)

DETROIT, Oct 3 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Friday it would close an SUV plant in Ohio by the end of the year, cutting about 1,200 jobs, most of them hourly workers.

GM builds the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7X SUVs at the plant in Moraine, Ohio, which it said in June it expected to close by 2010 because of sharply reduced demand for larger trucks and SUVs.

U.S. auto industry sales have plunged 12.8 percent in 2008 through September due to a slowing in the economy, pressure on the housing market and, more recently, tight credit conditions.

Through September, GM sales were down 17.6 percent, including a nearly 23 percent decline in light trucks. Sales of the TrailBlazer were down 37 percent, the Envoy down 44 percent and the 9-7X down about 30 percent.

GM told the 1,100 hourly workers and 100 salaried employees of the plans on Friday, GM spokesman Chris Lee said.

"The market has continued to deteriorate and it's forecast to continue to deteriorate going forward," Lee said.

The alternative is simple and powerful. Take that huge sum of money and give it directly to the people who need it. Let the government declare a moratorium on foreclosures and give aid to homeowners to help them pay off their mortgages. Create a federal jobs programme to guarantee work to people who want and need jobs and for whom "the free market" has not come through.

What will 700 billion buy?

If you're anything like me, it is impossible to comprehend spending 700 billion. What on earth would it take to spend that amount of money? This article does just that, in several ways.

good ideas. also they need to open up more money for small business loans (to qualified businesses).

One of the big reaon Clinton's economy was so robust is they provided lots of small business loans.

I'm not positive, but I would venture to guess that most

so-called poor (monetarily) people do not own homes.

So I still remain at no bailout for anyone...at all...If they wanna "go big" they need to go BIGGER...or STAY HOME....

HELLO dr... It's nice to see you again...I'd say I thought of you 6 days ago....yes..I think 6 days...Welcome back!

Where have you been? What have you been doing? What is new?

-Some kid wants to go on myspace here at the li'bry.-

The adults and kids share computers at this library? Here's some insider information...tell the kid you are doing homework...You can stay forever on the public computer if you say you are doing homework...

________________

Hi, Alice:

Nice to read you, too.

Yep, adults 'n kids shares computers at the Sitka Public Li'bry, of which there ain't but eight (three of which is short-timers), so 'puter time-space is hyper-regulated
'n jealously defended. And tx. for the tip re: the homework dodge, but I'm a-feared even a pardon from AK's perky-but-poleaxed governor will avail me not on that score. Runnin' outta 'puter time at Sitka Public is sorta like pleadin' for clemency from an unmerciful God -- when a body's time is up, yer just tits up.

I is in Alaska. Been here the summer. Crewed for an old buddy of mine, then bought a boat and power troll permit in late August. Like a damn fool, for my first trip solo, I went 80 mile north to Cross Sound 'n had a worrisome trifecta hit -- GPS ceased functionin', radar stopped workin', stove become tempermental. Got two outta three solved at port in Pelican 'n were commercial fishin' for cohos till the closure (which were Sept. 20th). Gettin' boat work done till Oct. 11th, when the king salmon season reopens for the winter.

(Now it sounds McCain's pullin' outta Michigan, will prolly vote absentee for Obama 'stead a volunteerin' in Mich. and stay 'n fish my boat for a spell longer'n originally planned. Been wonderin' if my dogs would accommodate to boat life or not? Would like to try but Mich. to AK is a long way to drive w/dogs that might wind up bein' miserable 'n pukin' alla time. Prolly will leave 'em to home and keep payin' the guy that's watchin' 'em for me -- w/much love 'n affection, thankfully, so I only feels *slightly* less guilty 'bout not seein' 'em. I misses me some pooches prolly like you does yer cats.)

Ain't had internet access to speak of, but for occasional forays to the li'bry.

Hope you been well, Alice. What's news w/you? Still workin' at the li'bry? Full-time still suck? Topped three digits on cats yet?

The dog is still alive! You're right! This is brutal!

How could my parents have done this to me! ;)

Suffer and die

(To reword a little)
Direct quotation from Alice (whom I do adore): "cannot believe the tv people let it die and suffer right in the movie....!!"

Yes - the empty salesman sensationalism of tv people is destructive.

But isn't it feline - and this may reaffirm the divinity of cats - to share in that ultimate (last) moment of life with an other before devouring that other, thereby inviting it warmly to share one's own life cycle?

I honor the hunters in Vermont - the ones I know really feel for each deer and its plight in today's planet - when they seek their winter sustenance in my back nineteen.

No - moose-skinner Sarah probably doesn't get it, and has long worn her earth-hardiness as a badge - nothing else.

But my friend Spotted Wolf reminds me to honor the life of everything I eat, including those whom he would call the "bean people." That's why it's so cool to have a garden.

But next time you see one of the cats seemingly getting sadistic pleasure out of prolonging the death of its prey, think again: perhaps there's a cosmic bonding going on there. Just look at the intensity - the single-pointed union - in the act.

That said, I am revolted by the mechanized industrial slaughter and symmetrical packaging "other" life on this planet for our ingestion, like lab pills. I stay away from packaged food-shit, veg and carn alike.

Well that got me off on a diatribe. Cut it out!

Washington State

Time and time again they try to screw with our state-even though the the western part is very Democratic (with some exceptions)the eastern part tends to be republican. I live in a small town in the latter-seriously if we see a Obama Biden bumper sticker here we quietly exchange knowing glances. We belong to the Eastern Washington Progressive Voters and that has been my only connection to reality other than the Internet for 8 years. The ads Rossi is running here are just plain lies-he looks like a frigging alter boy (not nearly as smug as last time)but still a LIAR.

Because they've been so right, so often about so many things. Translated to everyone else outside of the once respected organization, I think this works out to be "China is our trading partner and we'd rather not offend them or call them out for failing so miserably and in fact, our own US companies who outsource products under such conditions for a few extra pennies of profit are equally clueless and dangerous." Or something like that.

This is what happens when you leave religious zealots and deregulation extremists to run the shop and that's what we have across the entire administration. Pick your branch of the federal government and it's always the same.

Detroit Free Press columnist:
So Sarah Palin didn't indulge the critics' lowest expectations in her Thursday night debate with Joe Biden. She didn't stumble or stammer, commit any awful gaffes or make a fool of herself.

But it's only by the shallowest of standards that her performance could be called creditable or impressive.

Palin surfed through the questions by skimming over the topics, offering little in the way of depth, context or understanding. When she was asked for substance, she too often respond with clichés. When she was asked something directly, she too often dodged with a change of subject.... Palin did score some style points with her consistent efforts to connect with ordinary Americans; she kept her delivery folksy and salted her answers with colloquial phrases and jabs at Washington insiders.

If it had been coupled with any sign that she has given serious thought to the issues that face this country, it would have been a slam dunk win for her.

As it is, her biggest accomplishment was to heighten the fears that she is woefully unprepared for the job she is seeking.

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008
September 28th, 2008 by Office of the Speaker
Significant bipartisan work has built consensus around dramatic improvements to the original Bush-Paulson plan to stabilize American financial markets—including requiring a plan to ensure the taxpayer is repaid in full.

Read the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (SUBJECT TO FURTHER TECHNICAL REVISIONS) .pdf >>

CRITICAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE RESCUE PLAN
Democrats have insisted from day one on substantial changes to make the Bush-Paulson plan acceptable—protecting American taxpayers and Main Street—and these elements are included in the draft legislation under consideration.

PROTECTION FOR TAXPAYERS, REQUIRING A PLAN TO BE REPAID IN FULL

Requiring Congressional review after the first $350 billion is disbursed

Gives taxpayers a share of the profits of participating companies, or puts taxpayers first in line to recover assets if a company fails

Requires a President five years from now to submit a plan to ensure taxpayers are repaid in full, with Wall Street making up any difference

Allows the government to also purchase troubled assets from pension plans, local governments, and small banks that serve low- and middle-income families

LIMITS ON EXCESSIVE COMPENSATION FOR CEOs AND EXECUTIVES
For companies publicly auctioning over $300 million:

No multi-million dollar golden parachutes for top 5 executives after auction

No tax deduction for executive compensation over $500,000

Penalizes golden parachutes for CEOs who are fired or have run the company into the ground

For companies from which the government makes direct purchases:

No multi-million dollar golden parachutes

Limits CEO compensation that encourages unnecessary risk-taking

Recovers bonuses paid to executives who promise gains that later turn out to be false or inaccurate

STRONG INDEPENDENT OVERSIGHT AND TRANSPARENCY

Four separate independent oversight entities or processes to protect the taxpayer

A strong oversight board appointed by bipartisan leaders of Congress

GAO oversight and audits at Treasury to ensure strong controls; to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse

An independent Inspector General to monitor the Treasury Secretary’s decisions

Transparency—requiring posting of transactions online

Meaningful judicial review of the Treasury Secretary’s actions

HELP TO PREVENT HOME FORECLOSURES CRIPPLING THE AMERICAN ECONOMY

The government can work with loan servicers to change the terms of mortgages (reduce principal or interest rate, lengthen time to pay back the mortgage) to reduce the 2 million projected foreclosures in the next year

Extends provision (enacted earlier in this Congress) to stop tax liability on mortgage foreclosures

Helps save small businesses that need credit by aiding small community banks hurt by the mortgage crisis—allowing these banks to deduct losses from investments in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac stocks
