McCain Losing Ground With
McCain Losing Ground With Older Voters: Campaign Notebook
By Bob Drummond and Joe Sobczyk
Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- John McCain is losing ground with older Americans, a group that consistently has high turnout at the voting booth.
Barack Obama jumped to a 46-42 percent lead among those 65 and older in the latest Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll. That's an 18 percentage-point swing since mid-August, when the poll showed McCain with a 50-36 percent advantage.
People 65 and older are among Americans most concerned about financial upheaval, according to the poll, taken Sept 19-22. Only 11 percent say they're better off than they were four years ago, compared with 24 percent of all respondents; 8 percent of the older Americans say the country is moving in the right direction, compared with 13 percent overall.
Obama also has the advantage with younger voters. The Illinois senator leads 52-41 percent among Americans between 18 and 44 years old. Those in the middle, ages 45-64, are going for McCain 47 percent to 42 percent.
While McCain gets a majority of Protestants, 51 percent to 41 percent, Obama wins Catholics 47 percent to 35 percent for McCain.

mmr - it's an axis-II personality disorder.
you can google 'narcissistic personality disorder' or 'borderline personality disorder' for the general idea. persons having a weak, practically non-existent sense of a coherent 'self' exist in a constant state of near-panic.
this feels 'normal' to such a person. relationships, if you could call them that, tend to take the form of bullying and/or high 'drama'.
these are extremely difficult-to-treat pathologies, some would say 'impossible' from a clinical standpoint, because they will not acknowledge that they have a problem... everyone else is 'f'd up'... not them. Creates an ethical dilemma for the practitioner, since they rarely enter treatment apart from court-ordered treatment for 'threatened suicide', etc.
such persons are highly manipulative, may be 'clever', but not particularly intelligent; characteristically stubborn and resistant to learning new things. unable to take the point of view of another (sociopathy).

Mad Dog Palin
Mad Dog Palin
By Matt Taibbi, RollingStone.com. Posted September 27, 2008.
The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is -- it's what her candidacy says about America.
I'm standing outside the XCEL ENERGY CENTER in St. Paul Minnesota Sarah Palin has just finished her speech to the Republican National Convention, accepting the party's nomination for vice president. If I hadn't quit my two-packs-a-day habit earlier this year, I'd be chain-smoking now. So the only thing left is to stand mute against the fit-for-a-cheap-dog-kennel crowd-control fencing you see everywhere at these idiotic conventions and gnaw on weird new feelings of shock and anarchist rage as one would a rawhide chew toy.
All around me, a million cops in their absurd post-9/11 space-combat get-ups stand guard as assholes in papier-mache puppet heads scramble around for one last moment of network face time before the coverage goes dark. Four-chinned delegates from places like Arkansas and Georgia are pouring joyously out the gates in search of bars where they can load up on Zombies and Scorpion Bowls and other "wild" drinks and extramaritally grope their turkey-necked female companions in bathroom stalls as part of the "unbelievable time" they will inevitably report to their pals back home. Only 21st-century Americans can pass through a metal detector six times in an hour and still think they're at a party.

President of Paraguay Turns Down Meeting with Sarah Palin
I'm not kidding.
Paraguay President Fernando Lugo, while attending both the United Nations General Assembly meetings and the Clinton Global Initiative, shared with friends over dinner some of the other meetings he had been having in New York.
He met this head of state. . .and that head of state. . .and so on. . .
. . .but then the room went silent and then broke into subdued laughter when he confided that he was approached about meeting with GOP Vice Presidential candidate and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
President Lugo turned the meeting down.
With all due respect to Paraguay and its great citizens, something is really wrong when the Paraguayan President won't even hang with Palin.
But note to world leaders, PLEASE start meeting with her.
Otherwise, she'll never get any credible international experience.
Who would of thunked it..

It’s not hard to guess why McCain had blown off Letterman for Couric at the last minute. The McCain campaign’s high anxiety about the disastrous Couric-Palin sit-down was skyrocketing as advance excerpts flooded the Internet. By offering his own interview to Couric for the same night, McCain hoped (in vain) to dilute Palin’s primacy on the “CBS Evening News.”
Letterman’s most mordant laughs on Wednesday came when he riffed about McCain’s campaign “suspension”: “Do you suspend your campaign? No, because that makes me think maybe there will be other things down the road, like if he’s in the White House, he might just suspend being president. I mean, we’ve got a guy like that now!”
That’s no joke. Bush has so little credibility he can govern only through surrogates (Paulson is the new Petraeus). When he spoke about the economic crisis in prime time earlier that same night, he registered as no more than an irritating speed bump en route to “David Blaine: Dive of Death.”
It’s that utter power vacuum that gave McCain the opening to pull his potentially catastrophic display of economic “leadership” last week. He may be the first presidential candidate in our history to risk wrecking the country even before being voted into the Oval Office.

Thought For The Day
"Decency, security and liberty alike demand that government officials shall be subjected to the same rules of conduct that are commands to the citizen. In a government of laws, existence of the government will be imperiled if it fails to observe the law scrupulously. Our Government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the Government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that, in the administration of the criminal law, the end justifies the means -- to declare that the Government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal -- would bring terrible retribution. Against that pernicious doctrine this Court should resolutely set its face." Justice Louis Brandeis dissent in Olmstead v. United States 1928

Bush Withholds Salmon Disaster Money as He Pushes for Corporate Bailouts
As George Bush pushes Congress to bail out Wall Street corporations, he refuses to immediately release $70 million out of the $170 million appropriated by Congress for disaster relief to salmon fishermen and businesses impacted by this year's salmon closures.
While George W. Bush wants taxpayers to give Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson a $700 billion blank check to bail out Wall Street for its reckless speculation and greed, the administration announced last week that it would release only $100 million of the $170 million appropriated to salmon fishermen and businesses impacted by this year's salmon fishing closure off the California and Oregon coasts and in Central Valley rivers.

"It Would Be Fantastic."
09.28.08 -- 12:44AM By Josh Marshall
I take everything I read about American politics in the British papers with a grain of salt. But giving what we've seen so far, I can't say I'd be surprised if the moral jalopy that is the McCain-Palin Straight Talk Express sunk us even further into farce with something like this. From the Times of London ...
In an election campaign notable for its surprises, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate, may be about to spring a new one -- the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fiancé before the November 4 election.
Inside John McCain's campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. "It would be fantastic," said a McCain insider. "You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week."

Can Palin give a coherent answer?
The reviews of Sarah Palin's latest television appearance tumbled in yesterday and they were ugly. Take me to your socialism
Charles said that every system contains the seeds of its own destruction; every economy contains contradictions which, over time, wear on the machinery, until they eventually jam it up. Feudalism didn't give way to capitalism because somebody thought it would be a good idea. It gave way to capitalism because feudalism didn't work anymore. And when the contradictions in capitalism finally approach critical mass, that system too will appear increasingly absurd, and finally be paralyzed, and then we will have a new system. The system that will follow capitalism, said Charles, is socialism.
The contradictions in capitalism, and the requisite cluelessness of the rulers in its decadent phase, have finally reached the height of absurdity with the current administration, so that now, the free marketeers in the White House are demanding that the congress enact socialism, right now, this week! Only they're not calling it that. That's because they can't see that far ahead. To them, the solution is not socialism, it's fascism, which is socialism for the few, the proud, the financiers. - RS

rctowns,
I created a joke a few years ago that suffered from the multiple pronunciations of Iraq just as your reference does.
I don't remember the setup. It setup isn't important except that it must tie automobile steering repair with the Cheney/Bush administration's steering of the news cycles.
The punchline is "Iraq opinion steering." (Rack and pinion steering.)
You're not laughing. Now you know why the joke didn't work. If Iraq is pronounced E-rock or I-rock instead of I-rack or E-rack, the pun falls flat. Your pun has the opposite pronunciation problem.
Oh, the comedic crosses we must bear...

Tina Fey reprises role as Sarah Palin on `SNL'
By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer
Sun Sep 28, 2008
NEW YORK - Tina Fey reprised her role as Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live," again appearing as the Republican vice presidential candidate in an opening sketch.
Saturday night's show — the third of the season for the NBC comedy program — brought back the season premiere tandem of Fey and Amy Poehler, who opened the season with a memorable sketch featuring Fey as Palin and Poehler as Hillary Clinton.
This time around, Poehler played CBS's Katie Couric, parodying the interview with Palin earlier this week. Poehler, though, mostly played straight man to Fey, who ratcheted up her performance of Sen. John McCain's running mate by satirizing her foreign affairs experience.
When Poehler's Couric pushed Fey's Palin to specifically discuss how she would help facilitate democracy abroad, Fey gave in: "Katie, I'd like to use one of my lifelines. ... I want to phone a friend."
When a confused Poehler informed her that that wasn't how the interview worked, Fey's Palin responded — alluding to one of the governor's most quoted lines from the interview — "Well, in that case, I'm just gonna have to get back to ya."
Fey, a former cast member and head writer of "SNL," has seemingly been thrust back into regular appearances on the program despite her full-time gig with NBC's "30 Rock."
She is widely considered to look like Palin, and "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels persuaded her to ride the show's hot hand. Her first appearance as the Alaskan governor two weeks ago was a huge hit, helping boost the premiere's ratings and garnering attention online.
Fey wasn't the only former cast member who returned Saturday night. Chris Parnell came back to play presidential debate moderator Jim Lehrer in a sketch that parodied Friday night's contest between McCain and Democratic rival Barack Obama — which occurred less than 27 hours earlier than the live "SNL" broadcast.
The sketch mainly played up McCain's attempts to shake up the debate process, as Darrell Hammond's McCain urged his opponent to join him in "nude or seminude" town hall meetings.
At the outset, Parnell announced: "Throughout the debate, I will urge you both to look at one another up to and beyond the point it becomes uncomfortable." -

The Problem with SNL Last Night
The real interview was too funny to be parodied. Even David Brooks compared it to Borat on Charlie Rose the other night saying that he couldn't watch it because he doesn't like embarrassment like Borat.
he hopes to see none of the people
that seems to be the unspoken wish all around and for all of us, let's just make it thru these final days and then god willing we might be able to go back to the drawing board with a new and better congress in January; let's just not screw it up so much that it ties our hands for the future.... (let's leave a few pennies in the coffers)
of course for this to happen we should have to get rid of all those laughing asses in the picture, pelosi and reid should be the first to go
Thinking about stocking up on canned goods
It sounds a bit apocalyptic but I'm actually considering buying a bunch of canned food and some jugs of distilled water. I usually collect a hundred bucks of cans for the food shelters for the holidays. I'm thinking about buying a bunch of cans early and just put it in a closet just in case we are expected to grow potatoes in our yards for food. I can't re order blood pressure medicine for a month.

McCain/Obama debate numbers were down.
So Sarah will most likely draw the biggest crowd of the year.

The human airbag that will protect the elderly if they fall - at £700 a pop

If your loved ones aren't quite as steady on their feet as they used to be, fear not - help is at hand.
The solution, according to its Japanese inventors, is this bizarre 'human airbag'.
Sensors on a vest strapped round the wearer's waist detect if he or she is taking a tumble.
Within 0.1 seconds, it inflates each of the two airbags to the size of three footballs, providing a soft padding to the back of the head and bottom.
Sadly, the 2 1/2lb (1.1kg) device, made by Japanese firm Prop, does have one or two drawbacks.
It only protects the wearer if he or she falls backwards, not forwards, and the price - around £700 - seems a little-inflated.
The airbag was unveiled at the International Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo, where it was displayed by Prop president Mitsuya Uchida.
Britons are unlikely to find out for themselves if it's worth it, however, as the airbag is not available here.
Around 22 per cent of Japan's population, nearly 30million people, are over 65.
As well as the airbag, recent inventions to assist them include light-up slippers and a kettle which alerts family members if its owner does not make enough tea.

I am not sure I understand your point...assuming you have one..
What is "the left" afraid of, this time?
Sarah Palin? C'mon, puppy..

Today McSame say's he's a Teddy Roosevelt Republican! I've heard this before, but not with as much frequency. I guess he's a full fledged populist now!
That's gonna resonate! I wonder which part of Teddy he likens himself to! The economic regulator? The one who taxes the rich their fair share? The one who valued organized labor?

“How about the Pakistan situation?” Rovito asked. “What’s your thoughts about that.”
“In Pakistan?” Palin responded.
“What’s going on over there, like Waziristian?”
“It’s working with Zardari to make sure that we’re all working together to stop the guys from coming in over the border,” Palin said. “And we’ll go from there.”
“Waziristan is blowing up,” Rovito replied.
“Yeah, it is,” Palin said. “And the economy there is blowing up, too.”
“So we do cross-border, like from Afghanistan to Pakistan, you think?” Rovito asked.
“If that’s what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should,” Palin said.

So you were an Obama guy all along?
That's good because many lefties are not happy with the way Obama is drifting to the right.
You were ok with his War Plans?
You are ok with his FISA and Bailout votes?
You were not in favor of anyone more liberal?
Well it's good to see our left wing come in out of the cold and move to the center.
I just noticed there was a lot of energy in trying to attack the woman who changed the whole election outlook this year.
The folks kinda like Sarah and want to see her do well.
The more the liberals attack her, the more the folks want to see her succeed.
I have notice when liberals get frightened they lash out.
Did Palin lie about 'trade missions' with Russia? We Love Sarah
Now that McCain has gone over my bettingline when she would leave I am all for her staying in .... she is the best thing since Richard Nixon/Watergate.
RAW STORY
In a Thursday interview with Katie Couric, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin cited "trade missions" with Russia as her one tangible piece of foreign policy experience.
What trade missions?
Research doesn't show a single Alaska-Russia trade mission since former Democratic governor Tony Knowles visited Siberia in 1997, when Palin was running Wasilla, according to Salon.com.
When the reporter asked gubernatorial spokeswoman Kate Morgan about this issue, she refused to answer. Morgan claimed she couldn't legally discuss the matter because she is a state employee and the reporter had learned about the trade missions through the Couric interview, which stems from her bid for the Oval Office.
Spokespeople for the McCain/Palin campaign did not respond to requests for comment.
Palin has never visited Russia and had never traveled outside of North America until last year, the Associated Press reported. The vice presidential candidate had never met a foreign leader until a trip to New York this week.
A press release details Palin's meeting with a trade mission from the Yukon, but nothing about dealings with Russia.
The "pattern is familiar" to Andrew Sullivan of The Atlantic, who refers to Palin's"odd lies."
The following is an excerpt from Palin's interview:
###
COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?
PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We -- we do -- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where -- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is -- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to -- to our state.
###
Sen. John McCain told ABC’s Charles Gibson that Palin has foreign policy experience because "Alaska is right next to Russia. She understands that."
Palin also falsely stated in the same interview with Couric that former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger supported her view that U.S. leaders should not talk to Iranian leaders without preconditions.
Couric called Kissinger after the interview to confirm he believes, as does Sen. Barack Obama, that the U.S. should talk to Iran without any preconditions, Examiner.com reported.
“And the economy there is blowing up, too.”
what the eff is she talking about, McV?
enlighten us?
when did the economy of waziristan become an issue pertinent 2 this camp-pain [sic, schmuck]?
WaDo you must be blogging DelusionalNonsense from a mental ward
In FACT every major reputable poll proves that the national laughing stock named Sarah Palin is a huge boat anchor around McSame's neck dragging him way down. The FACTS clearly show that McCain/Palin has nosedived a lot in the past week.
That FACT should even be obvious to a delusional mental case like you Wado/McSameVoter

McCain Replaces Palin with Startled Deer
Hoofed Running Mate Could be Game-changer
Andy Borowitz
With less than a week to go before the crucial vice-presidential debate, GOP presidential nominee John McCain announced today that he was replacing his running mate, Alaska governor Sarah Palin, with a startled deer.
According to campaign insiders, the decision to select a hoofed mammal to replace Gov. Palin evolved after Sen. McCain watched his running mate's performance in a series of interviews with CBS's Katie Couric.
"Good Lord, a startled deer could do better than that," Sen. McCain reportedly said, prompting his aides to draw up a shortlist of startled deer.
The Arizona senator supposedly brushed aside concerns that a startled deer would wilt under the pressure of a televised debate, telling aides, "At least a goddamn deer won't go on about Alaska being close to Russia."
The McCain campaign said today that Sen. McCain's new running mate, Bucky the Red Deer, would not be made available to the press prior to the debate.
"Bucky is very much a work in progress," said McCain campaign manager Rick Davis. "Right now we're working on keeping him from bolting off the stage."
Bucky's opponent in the upcoming debate, Delaware senator Joseph Biden, appeared today to be trying to manage expectations for the high-stakes face-off with his four-legged rival.
"Bucky the Red Deer is articulate, bright and clean," Sen. Biden said. "That's storybook, man."
Elsewhere, former "American Idol" star Clay Aiken revealed that he was gay in an exclusive interview with Duh magazine.

Aagh.
god - this is horrifying on ABC This week. They have Robert Reich, Newt Gingrich, and this guy named Steven Pearlstein. George Will, Gingrich and Pearlstein all said 'so what' when Reich pointed out that the middle class has less purchasing power because the top 1% has 20% of the national income, while this top 1% only earned 8% back in 1980.
Pearlstein responds that this is irrelevant, and that the middle class just needs to stop spending, and the main problem is people living beyond their income. (seriously - perhaps this guy should study the Russian revolution, and how poor people can strike back against the ruling class).
Newt is just on about his book called 'drill, drill' or similar name, and he's pretending to be angry about the bailout, but is suggesting the worst solutions.

Somali pirates, besieged by foreign warships, demand 20 mln dlrs
MOGADISHU (AFP) — Somali pirates who hijacked a Ukrainian freighter carrying military weapons defiantly demanded 20 million dollars in ransom despite being surrounded by three foreign warships on Sunday.
The spokesman for the pirates, contacted by AFP via satellite telephone, confirmed that they were surrounded by three foreign war vessels off Somalia's central coast and said the ship's crew was "safe and not harmed."
"What we are awaiting eagerly is the 20 million dollars (13.7 million euros), nothing less, nothing more," Sugule Ali said. On Saturday, figures ranging between five and 35 million dollars had been put forward.
Ali confirmed that the ship was under siege, but he said the pirates would not give themselves up.
"It is true we are surrounded by three foreign military vessels and there are some others we can see (in the) distance," he said.

“The Palin choice was good at the time but she has not done too well since. She has been shown in the wrong formats and appears to be speaking from a memorized text. She needs to be freed up and let her sink or swim on her own.I believe she will do well if not being examined by hostile press. She must become more aggressive. Her treatment by the press has been shameful.Let her bust some reporter in the chops(figuratively)and the people will love it.However if she can’t be trusted to be herself then it was a bad choice by McCain.”
I TOTALLY AGREE!
“Next republicans do NOT back each other. We are the party of ill speaking prima donnas.Republican senators attacking McCain for his actions.Where is Reagan’s commandant number 11.So called “conservative writers jumping on Palin. If we lose it will be a self inflicted wound.”
AGAIN, I AGREE except for a few. Hell - Lieberman shows more support of McCain than some Rs.
The Rs need to start acting like a TEAM. You can not win if everyone is all about themselves. They need to get on the same page and want to win! Otherwise, they are going to lose more and more Rs out in the country that keep getting picked/pulled off by the left. People don’t want to be a part of a party who doesn’t fight for their principles/beliefs - they want representatives who espouse and stand up for them as a TEAM!
Get it together...all of you Rs up on capital hill.

Palin
looking at this stuff with Sarah Palin and her family.... the person who is my 'supervisor' and coworker, but is located in another state, is the daughter of an attorney general during the Nixon era who had initially been selected by Ford as his VP, but then he went with Bob Dole instead. That would be a very different home family life than average. My coworker is very well-balanced and great at science and running meetings. It's absolutely clear that both her father, and even my coworker, would be better able to field questions on MSNBC and have a broader education.
That isn't to say that Palin isn't an excellent politician, and has the skills to make people like her. Indeed, I think a lot of top executives in business might be able to fake or shield their lack of expertise and knowledge with their good verbal skills. Lots of powerful people are probably partly 'frauds'.
Palin is just clearly specialized in Alaska issues, and hasn't been able to do basic reading and education on national level issues.

AP Investigation: Palin got zoning aid, gifts
By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE, Associated Press Writer
WASILLA, Alaska - Though Sarah Palin depicts herself as a pit bull fighting good-old-boy politics, in her years as mayor she and her friends received special benefits more typical of small-town politics as usual, an Associated Press investigation shows.
When Palin needed to sell her house during her last year as Wasilla mayor, she got the city to sign off on a special zoning exception — and did so without keeping a promise to remove a potential fire hazard.
She gladly accepted gifts from merchants: A free "awesome facial" she raved about in a thank-you note to a spa. The "absolutely gorgeous flowers" she received from a welding supply store. Even fresh salmon to take home.
She also stepped in to help friends or neighbors with City Hall dealings. She asked the City Council to add a friend to the list of speakers at a 2002 meeting — and then the friend got up and asked them to give his radio station advertising business.
That year, records show, she tried to help a neighbor and political contributor fighting City Hall over his small lakeside development. Palin wanted the city to refund some of the man's fees, but the city attorney told the mayor she didn't have the authority.
Palin claims she has more executive experience than her opponent and the two presidential candidates, but most of those years were spent running a city with a population of less than 7,000.
Some of her first actions after being elected mayor in 1996 raised possible ethical red flags: She cast the tie-breaking vote to propose a tax exemption on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one, and backed the city's repeal of all taxes a year later on planes, snow machines and other personal property. She also asked the council to consider looser rules for snow machine races. Palin and her husband, Todd, a champion racer, co-owned a snow machine store at the time.
Palin often told the City Council of her personal involvement in such issues, but that didn't stop her from pressing them, according to minutes of council meetings.
She sometimes followed a cautious path in the face of real or potential conflicts — for example, stepping away from the table in 1997 when the council considered a grant for the Iron Dog snow machine race in which her husband competes.
But mostly, like other Wasilla elected officials at the time, she took an active role on issues that directly affected and sometimes benefited her. Her efforts to clear the way for the $327,000 sale of the Palin family home on Lake Wasilla is an example.

The Truth About Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin's credentials as a "reformer" are nothing but spin. She has sided with Big Oil, lobbied to increase pork spending and abused her public power to carry out personal vendettas. Here's a guide to separating myth from fact.
by TIM DICKINSON
Posted Oct 02, 2008 9:30 AM
*THE MYTH: "She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay. And made a profit!" — John McCain, at a campaign stop in Wisconsin
*THE FACTS: No one bought the jet online. It was eventually sold through an aircraft broker — at a loss to taxpayers of nearly $600,000.
**
*THE MYTH: "I told the Congress 'Thanks, but no thanks' on that Bridge to Nowhere." — Sarah Palin, convention speech
*THE FACTS: Supported the infamous pork project in her 2006 run for governor, even after Congress had killed the bridge; derided its opponents as "spinmeisters." Reversed her stance a year later — but kept the money, doling out the $223 million in federal funds to other pork projects throughout the state.
**
*THE MYTH: "We ... championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress." — Sarah Palin, convention speech
*THE FACTS: As mayor, employed a lobbyist who also worked for Jack Abramoff to secure $27 million in pork spending for Wasilla — more than $4,000 per resident. In her two years as governor, requested $453 million in earmarks. Alaska ranks first in the nation for pork, raking in seven times the national average.
**
*THE MYTH: "I found ... someone who stopped government from wasting taxpayers' money." — John McCain, introducing Palin
*THE FACTS: Signature accomplishment as mayor: building a $15 million hockey arena that plunged the city into debt. Broke ground on the project without finalizing the city's purchase of the land; the resulting fiasco cost Wasilla $1.3 million — roughly $200 per resident.
*
*THE MYTH: "Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems — as if we didn't know that already." — Sarah Palin, convention speech
*THE FACTS: "I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can't drill our way out of our
problem." — Sarah Palin, July 2008
**
*THE MYTH: "We began a nearly $40 billion natural-gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence." — Sarah Palin, convention speech
*THE FACTS: With federal approval years away, not a single section of the pipeline has been laid. State could end up paying the pipeline's contractor $500 million — even if it never breaks ground on the project.
**
*THE MYTH: "She's from a small town with small-town values." — Fred Thompson, convention speech
*THE FACTS: Wasilla and the surrounding valley recently named the meth capital of Alaska, with 42 meth labs busted in a single year.
**
*THE MYTH: Palin has "taken on the political establishment in the largest state of the union." — Fred Thompson, convention speech
*THE FACTS: Served until 2005 as director of fundraising group associated with indicted senator Ted Stevens.
**
THE MYTH: "She's fought oil companies." — John McCain, introducing Palin
*THE FACTS: Collected $13,000 in campaign contributions from oil and gas lobbyists, including Exxon, BP, Shell and Chevron. BP was a sponsor of her inaugural ball.
**
*THE MYTH: "She's been to Kuwait. She's been over there. She has been with her troops. The National Guard that she commands, who have been over there and had the experience." — John McCain, highlighting Palin's national-security credentials
*THE FACTS: Never had a passport before 2007, when she made a brief photo-op trip to visit troops in Germany and Kuwait. Has never been to Iraq, and has not met a single foreign head of state.
**
THE MYTH: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending." — Sarah Palin, convention speech
*THE FACTS: As governor, sought travel reimbursement for 312 nights she spent in her own home.

McCain retracts Palin's Pakistan comments
McCain being the MAN corrects Palin's own words ... sounds sexist.
WASHINGTON (CNN)— Sen. John McCain retracted Sarah Palin's stance on Pakistan Sunday morning, after the Alaska governor appeared to back Sen. Barack Obama's support for unilaeteral strikes inside Pakistan against terrorists
"She would not…she understands and has stated repeatedly that we're not going to do anything except in America's national security interest," McCain told ABC's George Stephanopoulos of Palin. "In all due respect, people going around and… sticking a microphone while conversations are being held, and then all of a sudden that's—that's a person's position… This is a free country, but I don't think most Americans think that that's a definitve policy statement made by Governor Palin."
Saturday night, while on a stop for cheesesteaks in South Philadelphia, Palin was questioned by a Temple graduate student about whether the U.S. should cross the border from Afghanistan into Pakistan.
"If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should," Palin said.

Hmmm. The seventh photo looks like some tofu I forgot in the fridge once.
hello, childrens.
does anyone else feel that we've passed some kind of turning point?
time to redouble our registration, GOtV, vote-protection efforts.
if you have 'early voting', then vote early, and get trained as a poll-worker, and volunteer at the polling places on november 4th. or work with your local party as a poll-monitor. the more eyes and ears and hands-on participation, the harder it will be for them to steal another election.
be assured that the efforts on the other side to cage, suppress, challenge, and mess with the vote tallies electronically will be greater than ever.
even if the poll numbers favor obama on the day by double-digits, electronic theft is still possible - and even if electronic theft doesn't do it for them, they've still got the supreme court.
this could be the most important election in our nation's history. I'm sure that it is, most people haven't got a clue.
As in all recent elections, the outcome turns on the majority - who are uninformed, misinformed, frightened, and/or apathetic.
Old-school conventional 'wisdom' was that "when your opponent is self-destructing, stand back and let them have at it..." But this is no longer true.
It is no longer sufficient to point out the lies, the cheating, the theft *after* the fact; for those whom have been taken in byt the lies, it is too late.
it is now necessary to *predict* it, before the fact - loudly and wherever possible - this is the power of political satire and humor - it exposes the liars and cheats when we can anticipate their malfeasances.
'Failure' is the keyword for Bush/McCain/Palin/Wall Street - every. single. policy. decision. has resulted in 'failure'... ask your repug 'friends' to name one Cheneycorp success; one aspect of their lives which is better now than it was before the Chimp. name the failures as such - failure to protect and defend the constitution - failure to interdict on 9/11, the lies that led to the failure to capture OBL, the failure to prove the threat from Iraq and the failed occupation there - and Afghanistan;
the failure of katrina, the failed economy. then ask your repug to name one single 'success' in the past eight years... just one. there aren't any.
but don't expect them to change their minds - they won't. but you can plant that seed of doubt that might keep them home on election day.
it takes courage for one to admit they've made a mistake, and the one thing we know about the bushies/neocon-supporters is that they lack courage. they are the frightened children who line up behind the schoolyard bully and hope that their toadying will keep them safe for another day. it never has, and never will.
we're the ones with the courage of our convictions, the certain knowledge that when one advocates for the least of us, speak for those without a voice, to defend the defenseless - we're doing the right thing.
one doesn't need 'reason' to do the right thing, so there's nothing to 'defend'.
we need to draw a sharp line in the sand re: this 'bailout' crap. Not one penny to any agency or organization that benefitted from the sub-prime meltdown, not one penny for any bank or institution that traded in mortgage-backed securities. there is no institution that is 'too big to fail.' they must be forced into bankruptcy, and collections made to pay to 'bail out' the individual taxpayer.
every single penny of any 'bailout' must go to individual taxpayers who have been harmed; every penny should be collected from the institutions which profited.
I Feel It!
Time to hammer these ignoramuses into a bloody pulp!
I say we keep swinging the axes until Nov. 5.

Go look at your link again. Stuff there you might not want.
that shotgun wedding story
i think they're chumming the waters looking to start a controversy that will take everyones eye off the real prize.
its just like the way they start to use the race card and leave a few blanks which we quickly jump in an fill and then they push back and accuse us of being the first to use the race card.
the real challenge is to let the main stream media know that covering a shotgun wedding is a non starter. nobody cares.
