Five people are arrested at
White House demanding, "Bush: Free the Cuban Five Now!"
In an action that received significant media attention, on the 10th anniversary of the unjust imprisonment of the Cuban Five political prisoners, five people were arrested in a civil disobedience action, trying to present 102,000 signatures on petitions that call on President Bush to free the Five.
Each of the five arrested represented one of the Five, Gerardo Hernández, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Fernando González. The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five presented 102,000 signatures from 78 countries.
Those arrested were Gloria La Riva, Coordinator, National Committee to Free the Cuban Five; Brian Becker, National Coordinator A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism); Elizabeth Lowengard, A.N.S.W.E.R. Washington-DC organizer, Keith Pavlik, National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, and Chuck Kaufman, Interim Coordinator of the Venezuela Solidarity Network.
During the action they demanded 1.) Free the Cuban Five immediately; 2.) Grant entry visas to Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, and 3.) Extradite Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela.

Ohio GOP sues to block early voting
Ohio Republicans on Friday challenged the state's top elections official, a Democrat, with allegations of power abuse and filed a lawsuit over a separate calendar glitch. Democrats countered that Republicans were trying to suppress the vote.
Republican Sen. John McCain's campaign helped thousands of people request absentee ballots, but Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner said many of them forgot to check a box attesting they were registered voters. Republicans protested, claiming Brunner was using her office to benefit her Democratic Party.
On Friday, Brunner offered a fix to the McCain-enlisted voters: Go on the Internet, print a form and mail it back.
"If they would have simply left the check-box off, they would have avoided all these problems and we wouldn't be here today," Brunner said.
Ohio Republicans and McCain's top campaign official in the state objected.
"There is no reason to reject a form that includes all necessary legal requirements," said Jon Seaton, McCain's top aide in the region. "Our position has not changed - qualified electors who request an absentee ballot should not be disenfranchised."
Ohio Republican Chairman Bob Bennett said Brunner was adding "another layer of bureaucracy to complicate the process even more" with the online handling.

McCain Attacks Obama Over Venezuela
Sen. John McCain today blasted the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador from Venezuela -- and at the same time the Republican presidential nominee sharply attacked his Democratic rival for suggesting he would meet with Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez during his first year in office. ...
... By contrast, he said, Sen. Barak Obama "calls for meeting directly and unconditionally with the region's worst tyrants.... Rather than focus on strengthening America's ties with friends and allies, he has pledged to sit down with dictators in Venezuela and Cuba in the first year of his presidency. Such a course of action would undermine our democratic allies and embolden anti-American dictators. The United States, and our partners throughout Latin America, cannot afford Senator Obama's brand of unilateralism that rewards Hugo Chavez and his dangerous despotism." ...

Palin challenged Gibson to show where she says global warming isn't man-made
Here's where she said it on 08-29-08
Newsmax: What is your take on global warming and how is it affecting our country?
Palin: A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made.

The 10 Commandments Of The New American Theocracy
Assimilated Press:
The following 10 Commandments have been released by the Bush administration in concert with a coalition of Republican lawmakers and evangelical Christians in order to prepare the population of the United States for a full scale transition to Biblical governance expected to be completed sometime in 2010
1. All women must be modestly dressed when in public. Any exposure of the female body that serves to entice or create lascivious reactions in men will be a criminal offense punishable by 10 lashes.
2. Women must at all times respect the wishes and commands of their husbands or closest patriarchal figure. Failure to obey the will of the closest masculine authority is a criminal offense punishable by 10 lashes.
3. All abortion is strictly prohibited. Women and doctors who violate this commandment will face 20 years of hard labor in a federal penitentiary.
4. Be obedient and never question the authorities. Failure to obey this commandment will lead to re-education at the nearest Halliburton Luxury Spa & Resort. Repeat violators will be dealt with in a harsh but humane manner.

Hi Kev! Happy Friday!
Lies, Damned Lies, and
Lies, Damned Lies, and Barack Obama = Why isn't Obama stretching the truth more often?
Slate
Since July, John McCain and his campaign have made 11 political claims that are barely true, eight that are categorically false, and three that you'd have to call pants-on-fire lies—a total of 22 clearly deceptive statements (many of them made repeatedly in ads and stump speeches).
Barack Obama and Joe Biden, meanwhile, have put out eight bare truths, four untruths, and zero pants-on-fire lies—12 false claims. These stats and categories come from PolitiFact, but the story looks pretty much the same if you count up fabrications documented by FactCheck.org or the Washington Post's Fact Checker, the other truth-squad operations working the race: During the past two and a half months, McCain has lied more often and more outrageously than Obama.......
HI Alice
happy friday to you too 8-)
Coleman's two-second mistake
Coleman's two-second mistake could cost millions (MN-Senate)
Source: Politico
...snip...
Al Franken, who’s trying to unseat the Minnesota Republican this fall, is claiming that a tiny error at the end of a 30-second Coleman commercial violates federal communications law – and Coleman has to forfeit the special, reduced ad rate given to political candidates.
Coleman recently produced an ad featuring former Minnesota Lt. Gov. Sandy Keith attacking Franken. To receive the “lowest unit charge” – which can sometimes be half of typical rates -- Coleman must include a disclaimer saying he approved the message. He also needs to broadcast his own likeness for a minimum of four seconds, according to the federal Communications Act of 1934.
...snip...
“Though the written disclaimer does appear for four seconds, Coleman’s image only appears for the last two seconds of the advertisement,” wrote Franken’s counsel Marc Elias of Perkins Coie, in a letter to 11 Minnesota station managers obtained by Politico.
It’s a loser-pays-all kind of law, according to Elias: If a campaign violates the rule once, it loses the discount for the "duration of the current election cycle."

Hubby and I lived in western Alaska in the 80's (Bethel).
I don't know if you are aware that Wasilla is the xurb of Anchorage that the Rednecks pushed to make the state capital. They thought Juneau was too elitist. Alaskans (mostly the anglo/redneck ones) are that weird breed of libertarians that think they truly take care of themselves while having a budget that is 33% Federal. It is truly scary trying to survive now in the Bush. Someone posted a link to the Tundra Drums on a previous thread (Bethel's hometown paper) that highlighted that. We just sold a passive solar house (Thank the powers) in Bethel that we built in 81 (after reinsulating and residing) and I want to say that solar works!

McCain and Palin's Top 20 Lies, Myths and Flip-Flops
Reposted because it's Friday
You can live a Lie or Live with it, or vote against it!
1. The Myth: McCain and Palin claim to be agents of change.
The Truth: In a desperate attempt to revive McCain's "maverick" reputation, the McCain campaign is trying to co-opt Obama's slogan. But "change" is a tough act to pull off when your record almost exactly matches the current president's. According to a study cited by the Huffington Post, John McCain voted in keeping with the president's positions 100 percent of the time in 2008 and 95 percent in 2007.
2. The Lie: To burnish Palin's rep as a down-to-earth, no-nonsense fighter of government waste, the campaign keeps bringing up the state-owned jet Palin put on eBay. Today McCain stated: "You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- made a profit."
The Truth: As Politico points out, Palin did put the Alaska-owned plane on eBay. But she failed to sell it. Instead, the state had to go through a private broker to unload the jet and ended up losing money in the transaction. Or, the opposite of profit.
3. Flip-Flop: Offshore Drilling.
Original Position: In 1999, McCain made conservatives very unhappy by supporting a moratorium on offshore drilling.
Politically Expedient Position: McCain can't afford to make conservatives unhappy anymore; his campaign now depends on the rapturous love of a conservative base that is still suspicious of him
4. : McCain and Palin have said up to 29 times and counting that Palin told Congress "'thanks but no thanks' on that Bridge to Nowhere."
The Truth: Palin strongly supported the Bridge to Nowhere and campaigned on the issue while running for governor of Alaska in 2006. It should also be noted that she never actually got the chance to tell Congress "no thanks," as Congress killed off the project, choosing instead to give a lump sum for all of Alaska's transportation projects, money that Palin gladly accepted.
5. The Lie: McCain keeps repeating, over and over and over again, that Obama's tax proposals will hurt the middle class.
The Truth: Obama's tax policy cuts taxes for people in the middle-income brackets, while his plan would increase taxes only for those with a family income above $250,000 and individuals who make more than $200,000. Not exactly the middle class.
6. The Lie: McCain falsely claims he received every award from every veterans organization.
The Truth: Despite saying it again and again, McCain is flat-out lying when he claims to have received the highest award from every veterans organization. As Think Progress reports:
He received a grade of D from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and a 20 percent vote rating from the Disabled Veterans of America; Vietnam Veterans of America noted McCain had "voted against us" in 15 "key votes."
As for the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars -- with whom McCain claims to have a "perfect voting record" -- both groups vigorously supported Sen. Jim Webb's (D-Va.) GI Bill that McCain tirelessly opposed.
7. Flip-Flop: Immigration Reform.
Original Position: McCain was once a proponent of an immigration plan that would combine securing the borders with a temporary worker program and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Politically Expedient Position: With his poll numbers dipping and under attack from Republican opponents during the primaries, McCain switched his position on immigration. As the AP reports, instead of supporting broad immigration reform, McCain's first and foremost priority now is to secure the borders. All that other, less important stuff, could come ... whenever. Stated McCain: "I got the message. ... We will secure the borders first and then go on to other issues."
8. The Lie: An attack ad (ironically called "Fact Check") by the McCain campaign claimed that Factcheck.org, a nonpartisan election-accuracy watchdog, accused Obama of spreading misleading information about Sarah Palin.
The Truth: Factcheck.org did not attribute Internet rumors about Palin to the Obama campaign. The organization was in fact debunking information about Palin spread online though anonymous e-mails and Web posts.
9. The Lie: The very same attack ad seems to purposefully misquote an article in the Wall Street Journal. The ad states that the Obama campaign sent a team to Alaska to "dig dirt on Governor Palin."
The Truth: The article actually stated they were sent to "dig into her record and background." Also, as it turns out, the article was wrong to begin with. Obama did not send a team to Alaska to dig into anything. What are the chances McCain will pull the ad and apologize?
10. The Lie: An attack ad by the McCain campaign says Obama is "against troop funding."
The Truth: According to Factcheck.org, Obama has only voted against one war-funding bill, "after Bush vetoed a version that contained a date for withdrawal from Iraq."
Check out the next 10 Lies

Senator Hatch: both sides "ridiculous" in squabbles
Senator Hatch: both sides "ridiculous" in squabbles (defends Obama))
NEW YORK -- Senator Orrin Hatch, a conservative Utah Republican, today defended Barack Obama from what Hatch called ``ridiculous'' charges that Obama had insulted GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin with the use of an age-old expression, ``lipstick on a pig.''
``I think it's ridiculous, what they've said about Sarah Palin,'' Hatch said, referring to criticisms of her fitness for the White House. But to suggest that Democratic nominee Obama was calling Palin a ``pig?'' Just as silly, Hatch said. ...
...While Hatch said he is committed to electing GOP nominee John McCain, ``Barack Obama is a nice person. He's smart; he's intelligent. He writes well. He's very charismatic.'' Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, who has served with Hatch for decades in the US Senate, is ``a very fine human being,'' Hatch added. ...

Not only is it clear that John McCain is no longer running for president, but rather is taking a back seat to his human shield Sarah Palin, but it seems that Sarah Palin herself often takes a back seat in public office to her husband. Putting aside the fact that it's not clear how great a feminist she can be if her unelected husband is calling the shots in her public office, but what kind of elected official has their spouse in every meeting? They don't. And Hillary Clinton got a lot of crap from the Republicans for having such an extended role in Bill Clinton's White House. And with Sarah Palin clearly being billed as the one wearing the pants in the McCain/Palin family, I mean Palin/McCain, does this mean Todd, warts and all, will really be in charge? Because if he is, he just got subpoenaed.

I transferred to AZ in the late 80's (Tohono O'Odham Reservation with the BIA) and now live in Tucson. We had our house rented to the Indian Health Service and after Katrina they notified us they were moving out (and out of about 30 other rentals in that small town of about 8000.) Fuel oil is over 5.oo a gallon there and groceries are incredibly expensive. The native Yupiks subsistance fish but there is no longer commercial fishing in the rivers of the Yukon/Kuskokwim Delta. Now the Repubs are pushing a relaxation of clean water laws to allow Canadians the right to mine for gold at the headwaters of some of the richest fish habitat in the world.

Sarah Palin's 9 Most Disturbing Beliefs
It's time to shift the discussion about Palin to what really matters: her far-right views on the issues.
Let's forget for a moment that Sarah Palin likes to kill moose, has lots of children and was once voted the second-prettiest lady in Alaska; that's all part of the gusher of sensationalist, but not particularly substantive, news that has dominated coverage of the Alaska governor's addition to the Republican ticket.
Before the next news cycle brings the shocking information that Palin was actually impregnated by Bigfoot, we need to shift the discussion to what really matters about her in the context of the White House: her dangerous views.

Kitty hanging around
My friend's cat, Squeak, died on New Year's Eve 2007. She was a well loved pet and her passing was very hard on them. The next day her daughter was testing the camera on her new cell phone and decided to take a photo of the chair where her cat had loved to sit. When she reviewed the photo she found this image. They were very surprised, but also comforted that Squeak seemed to still be with them.

'Throw the bums out' say the bums
So the Republicans have decided to run against themselves. The bums have tiptoed out
the back door and circled around to the front and started yelling, "Throw the bums out!"
They've been running Washington like a well-oiled machine, to the point of inviting lobbyists into
the back rooms to write the legislation, and now they are anti-establishment reformers dedicated
to delivering us from themselves. And Giuliani is an advocate for small-town America.

Obama's reno office has moved their Alaska
I suppose you could say we have Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to thank for the Obama campaign's newest Nevada staffer. Jeff Giertz will be the campaign's Reno-based press secretary. He was transferred here this week from his previous post as Alaska communications director. The Obama campaign had chalked Alaska up as an early battleground state, and while the camp still says publicly they will compete there, Giertz's transfer is a bit more telling sign they're shedding Alaska staff in the wake of Palin joining the GOP ticket.

Obama to pressure McCain on openness
By MIKE ALLEN | 9/12/08 7:09 AM EST
full article
Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) plans to release 10 years of his tax returns on Friday morning, pressuring his Republican counterpart, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, to do the same, Politico has learned.
Disclosure, or transparency, is a big way for a candidate to make that case during a campaign.
News reports from Alaska have said that Palin collected per diem travel payments even when she was at home, and the Obama-Biden campaign wants reporters to see if she paid taxes on it.

A Tangled Story of Addiction
Consequences of Cindy McCain's Drug Abuse Were More Complex Than She Has Portrayed
By Kimberly Kindy
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 12, 2008; Page A01
When Cindy McCain is asked what issues she would champion as first lady, she often cites one of the most difficult periods of her life: her battle with -- and ultimate victory over -- prescription painkillers. Her struggle, she has said repeatedly, taught her valuable lessons about drug abuse that she would pass on to the nation.
*
Her misuse of painkillers prompted an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and local prosecutors that put her in legal jeopardy. A doctor with McCain's medical charity who supplied her with prescriptions for the drugs lost his license and never practiced again. The charity, the American Voluntary Medical Team, eventually had to be closed in the wake of the controversy. Her husband was forced to admit publicly that he was absent much of the time she was having problems and was not aware of them.

McCain said We WON ... No victory in Iraq, says Petraeus
BBC
The outgoing commander of US troops in Iraq, Gen David Petraeus, has said that he will never declare victory there.
In a BBC interview, Gen Petraeus said that recent security gains were "not irreversible" and that the US still faced a "long struggle".
When asked if US troops could withdraw from Iraqi cities by the middle of next year, he said that would be "doable".
In his next job leading the US Central Command, Gen Petraeus will also oversee operations in Afghanistan.
He said "the trends in Afghanistan have not gone in the right direction... and that has to be addressed".
Afghanistan remained a "hugely important endeavour", he said.
Earlier this week, President George W Bush announced a cut of 8,000 US troops in Iraq by February - with some 4,500 being sent to Afghanistan........

US 'in need of rebellion'
Howard Zinn: US 'In Need of Rebellion'
Al Jazeera speaks to Howard Zinn, the author, American historian, social critic and activist, about how the Iraq war damaged attitudes towards the US and why the US "empire" is close to collapse
09/09/08 "Al Jazeera" -- - - HZ: America has been heading - for some time, and is heading right now - toward less and less world power, less and less influence.
Obviously, since the war in Iraq, the rest of the world has fallen away from the United States, and if American foreign policy continues in the way it has been - that is aggressive and violent and uncaring about the feelings and thoughts of other people - then the influence of the United States is going to decline more and more.
This is an empire which is on the one hand the most powerful empire that ever existed; on the other hand an empire that is crumbling - an empire that has no future ... because the rest of the world is alienated and simply because this empire is top-heavy with military commitments, with bases around the world, with the exhaustion of its own resources at home.
[This is] leading to more and more discontent and home, so I think the American empire will go the way of other empires and I think it is on its way now.
Q: Is there any hope the US will change its approach to the rest of the world?
HZ: If there is any hope, the hope lies in the American people.
[It] lies in American people becoming resentful enough and indignant enough over what has happened to their country, over the loss of dignity in the world, over the starving of human resources in the United States, the starving of education and health, the takeover of the political mechanism by corporate power and the result this has on the everyday lives of the American people.
[There is also] the higher and higher food prices, the more and more insecurity, the sending of the young people to war.
I think all of this may very well build up into a movement of rebellion.
We have seen movements of rebellion in the past: The labour movement, the civil rights movement, the movement against the war in Vietnam.
I think we may well see, if the United States keeps heading in the same direction, a new popular movement. That is the only hope for the United States.........

Pakistan order to kill US invaders
The Australian
KEY corps commanders of Pakistan's 600,000-strong army issued orders last night to retaliate against "invading" US forces that enter the country to attack militant targets.
The move has plunged relations between Islamabad and Washington into deep crisis over how to deal with al-Qa'ida and the Taliban
What amounts to a dramatic order to "kill the invaders", as one senior officer put it last night, was disclosed after the commanders - who control the army's deployments at divisional level - met at their headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi under the chairmanship of army chief and former ISI spy agency boss Ashfaq Kayani.
Leading English-language newspaper The News warned in an editorial that the US determination to attack targets inside Pakistan was likely to be "the best recruiting sergeant that the extremists ever had", with even "moderates" outraged by it.
The "retaliate and kill" order came amid reports of unprecedentedly fierce fighting in the Bajaur Agency of Pakistan's tribal areas, an al-Qa'ida stronghold frequently mentioned as the most likely lair of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri.
At the same time, a series of brutal killings by the militants were reported.
The beheaded bodies of two of nearly 40 police recruits abducted a week ago were found near the town of Hangu. Their discovery follows warnings that the recruits would be put to death, one by one, unless Pakistan stopped its big offensive in Bajaur.
The bodies of three local Bajaur men who had been shot in the neck were also found yesterday. Notes were attached declaring the men to have been spies.
In a day of what appears to have been unrelenting combat in Bajaur, helicopter gunships, heavy artillery and tanks were used to strike al-Qa'ida targets.
Officials said at least 100 militants had been killed, bringing the number who have died in the six weeks since the offensive was launched to well over 700. The figure is regarded as remarkable, given that NATO forces in Afghanistan seldom achieve a "kill" rate of more than about 30 in any single operation. Many of those killed are reported to have been "foreign fighters" - mostly Arabs and Central Asians, who have been flooding into Pakistan's tribal areas to join al-Qa'ida and the Taliban......

BOB HERBERT: She’s Not Ready
NYT
While watching the Sarah Palin interview with Charlie Gibson Thursday night, and the coverage of the Palin phenomenon in general, I’ve gotten the scary feeling, for the first time in my life, that dimwittedness is not just on the march in the U.S., but that it might actually prevail.
How is it that this woman could have been selected to be the vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket? How is it that so much of the mainstream media has dropped all pretense of seriousness to hop aboard the bandwagon and go along for the giddy ride?
For those who haven’t noticed, we’re electing a president and vice president, not selecting a winner on “American Idol.”
Ms. Palin may be a perfectly competent and reasonably intelligent woman (however troubling her views on evolution and global warming may be), but she is not ready to be vice president..........

Palin lied about Iraq visit
Palin lied about Iraq visit to "battle zone"

Good grief, she lies repeatedly about everything. Then again, considering how flimsy her resume is, this is no surprise. Hey, I looked at China from the border in Laos so does that count as a visit to China? I changed planes at the airport in Seoul, so maybe that also counts as a visit according to Palin. I took a bus through Zambia for thirty minutes after rafting down the Zambezi River. Does that bus trip count as "on the ground experience" in Zambia? Does flying over Greenland count? I could see it from the plane window, after all.
Following her selection last month as John McCain's running mate, aides said Palin had traveled to Ireland, Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq to meet with members of the Alaska National Guard. During that trip she was said to have visited a "military outpost" inside Iraq. The campaign has since repeated that Palin's foreign travel included an excursion into the Iraq battle zone.
But in response to queries about the details of her trip, campaign aides and National Guard officials in Alaska said by telephone yesterday that she did not venture beyond the Kuwait-Iraq border when she visited Khabari Alawazem Crossing, also known as "K-Crossing," on July 25, 2007.
Asked to clarify where she traveled in Iraq, Palin's spokeswoman, Maria Comella, confirmed that "She visited a military outpost on the other side of the Kuwait-Iraq border."
It was the second such clarification in as many weeks of the itinerary of what Palin has called "the trip of a lifetime." Earlier, the campaign acknowledged that Palin made only a refueling stop in Ireland.
She took a few steps over the border to an outpost and thinks that was a battle zone? Does McCain honesty think this is valid experience for a v.p. candidate? Is he serious when he repeats the "she can see Russia" line? Even with that line, she has never even said that she personally saw Russia, only that it's possible. What new lie are we going to discover next? When is the media going to quit calling her lies "clarifications" or "stretching the truth" or providing other excuses. A lie is a lie and Palin-McCain can't stop themselves from lying.

Pakistan army ordered to hit back at U.S. forces
TEHRAN (Press TV) -- The Pakistani Army has been given orders to retaliate against any unilateral strike by the Afghanistan-based U.S. troops inside the country.
Army Spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas confirmed the orders in a brief interview with Geo News on late Thursday night.
The decision was made on the first day of the two-day meeting of Pakistan's top military commanders to discuss the U.S. coalition's ground and air assault in Waziristan region which killed dozens of civilians.
Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani chaired the meeting which began in Rawalpindi on Thursday at the Army General Headquarters.
Pakistan's military commanders expressed their determination to defend the country's borders without allowing any external forces to conduct operations inside the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, sources said.

Palin backs Israeli right to strike Iran - WHAT A FUCK NUT
The US must ensure that Teheran does not obtain weapons of mass destruction and should not second guess an Israeli decision to carry out a strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, John McCain's running mate in the US presidential race, said Thursday night in an interview with ABC News that focused almost exclusively on foreign policy issues.
"I believe that under the leadership of [President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, nuclear weapons in the hands of his government are extremely dangerous to everyone on this globe," Palin asserted. "We have got to make sure these weapons of mass destruction; that nuclear weapons are not given to the hands of Ahmadinejad, not that he would use them, but that he would allow terrorists to be able to use them. So we have got to put the pressure on Iran."
When asked how the US should respond in the event of an Israeli attack on Iran, Palin said, "Well, first, we are friends of Israel, and I don't think that we should second guess the measures that Israel has to take to defend themselves, and for their security."

Terror Plan Would Give F.B.I. More Power - Oh great
WASHINGTON — The Justice Department made public on Friday a plan to expand the tools the Federal Bureau of Investigation can use to investigate suspicions of terrorism inside the United States, even without any direct evidence of wrongdoing.
Justice Department officials said the plan, which is likely to be completed by the end of the month despite criticism from civil rights advocates, is intended to allow F.B.I. agents to be more aggressive and pre-emptive in assessing possible threats to national security.
It would allow an agent, for instance, to pursue an anonymous tip about terrorism by conducting an undercover interview or watching someone in a public place. Such steps are now prohibited unless there is more specific evidence of wrongdoing.
The plan is the latest in a series of steps by the Bush administration to extend key aspects of its counterterrorism strategy beyond the end of President Bush’s tenure. An executive order from Mr. Bush in August rewrote the rules for the nation’s 16 spy agencies, and an administration legislative proposal before Congress would reaffirm that the country “remains engaged in an armed conflict with Al Qaeda.”

Palin has no clue how
Palin has no clue how entitlements work.
Tonight in an ABC interview, host Charlie Gibson asked Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) if she would cut entitlements — such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Palin, however, began talking about spending by government agencies, demonstrating a fundamental ignorance on economics:
GIBSON: Do you talk about entitlement reform? Is there money you can save in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?
PALIN: I am sure that there are efficiencies that are going to be found in all of these agencies. I’m confident in that.
GIBSON: The agencies are not involved in entitlements. Basically, discretionary spending is 18 percent of the budget.
Watch it: at link
Last weekend, Palin also tried to explain the recent federal bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by saying that they had “gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.” The companies, however, aren’t taxpayer funded but rather operate as private companies.

Update Palin used the word "efficiencies" four different times during the interview to refer to money that can be saved in government agencies. She presumably meant "inefficiencies."

Matthew Yglesias on Palin's lack of budget knowledge....
I suppose in practice a McCain administration’s budgets would just look like George W. Bush’s budgets or Ronald Reagan’s budgets — tax cuts and huge deficits. But it is telling that the woman John McCain chose as his running mate doesn’t seem to understand what “entitlements” are. Clearly, just as most citizens don’t know what the Bush Doctrine is, most people probably aren’t all that familiar with the meaning of the entitlement/discretionary distinction in federal budgeting. But it’s a big deal for people who actually pay attention to political and policy issues in the United States. I wonder if McCain chatted with Palin at all about her views on entitlement reform before adding her to the ticket?

I know we are facing the most extreme form of extinction. I'm sure you already understand how much I loath the global warming deniers who want to destroy what is left of our planet.
I hope that people who write such violent things as blowing up oil wells understand the chaos and backlash that would bring. I support non-violent resistance, most of all because they won't permanently detain you that way. I think blowing up oil wells is just as irresponsible as denying global warming and it's effects on the inhabitants of the planet. I urge you to be careful.
Critique of charlie Gibson....
Charlie Gibson's War
By Todd Gitlin - September 12, 2008, 11:42PM
Well, not war, but a milder though satisfying combat and a valuable moment of self-redemption. By network standards, Gibson was a lipstickless bulldog. The encounter was combative enough to blow some of her Teflon off.
Much has already been written on segment one of the Gibsonthon, aired on World News Tonight Thursday. Palin didn't recognize the pillar of Bush's foreign policy, and then mischaracterized it. She repeated her absurdity about command of the Alaska National Guard and proximity to Russia. (He might well have asked her what she'd learned from all that proximity.) She declared that she was ready for war with Russia. Mild-mannered Charlie, who is always wishing us a good day, confessed: "I get lost in a blizzard of words there." I've never heard him so blunt.
On the Friday night 20/20 segment, Kate Snow's teaser began: "You discover her story is part fact and part fable." Palin was an earmark queen, winning $27,000,000 for 6000 people. She spent $8,000,000 on a road to nowhere. "Some of her best friends...are reluctant to endorse Sarah Palin the candidate," Snow reported.
That was for openers. Then Gibson continued: "We've got a very sick economy....What are three principal things you would change in the Bush economic plan?" Her answer: "Put government back on the side of the people." She touted "what I did with Wasilla. We cut the personal property tax." Gibson: "You came into a debt-free city and left it with considerable debt."
Gibson: "You've advertised yourselves as the party of change. What would you change in the Bush economic ;lan ?" As she rolled into her preprogrammed cant, drifting away from his question, he had to keep pressing her. Here's what she came up with at last: 1. Reduce taxes. 2. Control spending. 3. Oversight. Now, leave aside that oversight is not an executive prerogative at all, does this sound convincing? When she called for "efficiencies," Gibson asked whether that included entitlement programs. "All sectors," she clarified.
He might have asked what's so inefficient about Social Security. He might have asked whether she agreed with her running-mate that Social Security is a "disgrace." Still, to me, Palin sounded unconvincing.
"Why do you keep saying Obama's going to raise taxes?" "What was wrong with the Clinton economic plan? He produced 22,000,000 jobs against 5 million for Bush." Her bulldozer bulled on.
On the Bridge to Nowhere, he was Robert Jordan and William Holden in "The Bridge over the River Kwai" rolled together.
What do I know? I don't, of course, know how any of this played with independents who are disinclined to believe that Charlie Gibson is Satan's playmate. Are they prepared to believe that "Alaska is such a microcosm of the rest of the United States"? Do points 1-3 sound like a plausible remedy for the grave economic malaise and the Bush depredations? Doubletalk, tripletalk.

Yes Fernando
I agree - I was suprized to see that "game" on

mean to preach. I really appreciate your comments smcgee43. The law is restricting that kind of speech much like yelling fire in a theater. Not sure I blame them.
I'm often struck by the scene in that video of Rome I posted in that Destiny Open Mic above. Evidence of what we can do when there is peace and we work together (even under the rules of tyrants) compared to the devastation of working against one another deciding on the fucking tyrant....

GOP Congressman Lies On The Air About Palin And The Bridge -- And Is Called On It
By Eric Kleefeld - September 12, 2008, 10:01PM
A fun pattern has emerged that we don't see too often in politics -- the lies from the McCain-Palin campaign are now being called out as they are told live on the air. Just check out the reception that Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) received today on MSNBC:
Video at link
"You know I think the proof, the proof is in the pudding," Cantor said confidently. "And the fact is, Sarah Palin when she was governor of Alaska, rejected the moneys that came from Washington to construct the Bridge To Nowhere."
He then faced a now-predictable grilling from Norah O'Donnell, who pointed out the truth that Palin did not reject the money at all -- she kept it and used it for other projects.

Venezuela may be on verge

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on Venezuelan officials it accused of helping Colombian rebels smuggle drugs, deepening a diplomatic crisis that raised the specter of an oil supply cutoff.

Right in their own backyard- Climate Change....
Global warming could
cost Ohio its buckeyes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not the best-researched global-warming theory, but it could be the most horrifying to certain fans of college football: Environmentalists said Friday that climate change might push the growing range of Ohio's iconic buckeye tree out of the state, leaving it for archrival Michigan. "People had thought of global warming as something far away, affecting polar bears," said Tom Bullock.

WHAT MAKES PEOPLE VOTE REPUBLICAN?
By Jonathan Haidt
...the second rule of moral psychology is that morality is not just about how we treat each other (as most liberals think); it is also about binding groups together, supporting essential institutions, and living in a sanctified and noble way. When Republicans say that Democrats "just don't get it," this is the "it" to which they refer.
WHAT MAKES PEOPLE VOTE REPUBLICAN?
What makes people vote Republican? Why in particular do working class and rural Americans usually vote for pro-business Republicans when their economic interests would seem better served by Democratic policies? We psychologists have been examining the origins of ideology ever since Hitler sent us Germany's best psychologists, and we long ago reported that strict parenting and a variety of personal insecurities work together to turn people against liberalism, diversity, and progress. But now that we can map the brains, genes, and unconscious attitudes of conservatives, we have refined our diagnosis: conservatism is a partially heritable personality trait that predisposes some people to be cognitively inflexible, fond of hierarchy, and inordinately afraid of uncertainty, change, and death. People vote Republican because Republicans offer "moral clarity"—a simple vision of good and evil that activates deep seated fears in much of the electorate. Democrats, in contrast, appeal to reason with their long-winded explorations of policy options for a complex world.
Diagnosis is a pleasure. It is a thrill to solve a mystery from scattered clues, and it is empowering to know what makes others tick. In the psychological community, where almost all of us are politically liberal, our diagnosis of conservatism gives us the additional pleasure of shared righteous anger. We can explain how Republicans exploit frames, phrases, and fears to trick Americans into supporting policies (such as the "war on terror" and repeal of the "death tax") that damage the national interest for partisan advantage.
But with pleasure comes seduction, and with righteous pleasure comes seduction wearing a halo. Our diagnosis explains away Republican successes while convincing us and our fellow liberals that we hold the moral high ground. Our diagnosis tells us that we have nothing to learn from other ideologies, and it blinds us to what I think is one of the main reasons that so many Americans voted Republican over the last 30 years: they honestly prefer the Republican vision of a moral order to the one offered by Democrats. To see what Democrats have been missing, it helps to take off the halo, step back for a moment, and think about what morality really is.

We have a problem here where I live.
Flooding.
They just called me from work not to go in because the parking lot is flooded and they cancelled everything.
The pond outside my window is overflowing it's bank.
And Harminder, the lady that helps me said that the street to get to where I live is flooded also.
WHAT MAKES PEOPLE VOTE REPUBLICAN?
1. Democrats want to take your money and give it to someone else.
2. Democrats are weak on national defense.
3. Republicans love God.
4. Republicans believe in capitalism.
5. Republicans are patriotic.
6. Republicans want change in Congress.
what a waste of bandwidth
incubus - how are you doing on that troll filtering patch?
You wanted change - well things have changed !

Morning Sederville, heavy night for alot of people...
in Texas & the midwest up to Chicago, I hope you all are getting through this weather without to much damage. Nando can you get in touch with your family in Corpus Christi?
Watching live weather channel video of Ike. Galveston is really beat up.
Time for some Haydn! (J Haydn String Quartet Op.64 No.5 "Finale")
Corpus Christi?
My mom has been in Virginia for a month and my brothers family is in Connecticut for the next week. My sister-in-law's family moved her mom out of Corpus to Houston when the target was further south. They made it out of Houston in time and are fine in Corpus again. One of the reasons that people do not head evacuations is because of the headache avoiding the storms.
Toni that was an amazing article by Haidt.
I read the whole thing out loud to Steve. Brilliant and insightful. I am sending it to both Sam and Marc who I think will find it interesting.
Happe Talk
"FINALLY! " Fern,
are you actually to ALL the opinions in the article? Cuz I am definitely over the "hot" part, although I appreciate the imaginative scene creation by Mr. Seltzman. (And I respect the fact that he and his wife include provisos, as I would have done.)
P.S. Are there really Barack Obama sheets?
I still see no new VODs
Sam. I checked again just now. Am I looking in the wrong place?
