Reformed Maverick

Back in the day Janeane Garofalo and I would argue about John McCain- she sort of liked him, mostly because of his appearances on the daily show. Back then Stewart seemed to like him too, of course, that was before the Maverick reformed himself....

George S. asked Obama, if Barry would be willing to take on Sarah Baracuda on the basketball court? What????????????
How inappropriate to try and make this an election between Obama and Palin? That is just what the Republicans want. They want a split image on newspapers, internet, tv with the African American on one side and the White Woman on the other. They are appealing among other things to the racists out there with Palin's selection. And, Palin's speech had racial undertones. How dare an undereducated, intellectual lightweight, with little experience make fun of and lie about an accomplished black man, given the racial history of this nation. I have been so upset since Palin's speech I can't even find the words to express myself. I listened to two white men who were delegates to the republican convention, give definitions to what a "community organizer is. Here are the answers they gave, I am paraphrasing, "rabble rowser", "get paid for doing nothing", "bring discontent to the neighborhood", "try to get people to take advantage of the welfare system." That's exactly why they concentrated on his two years as a community organizer to appeal to white bigots.

Thanks for letting me vent a little on this blog.

McCain vows to have Democrats in Cabinet
Posted: 01:12 PM ET
(CNN) — Promising a “very bipartisan approach” to how he’ll run his
administration, Sen. John McCain said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he
would appoint Democrats to his Cabinet.

Speaking to CBS’ “Face the Nation,” the Republican presidential nominee
vowed that he won’t just have a single token Democrat in his Cabinet.

“It’s going to be the best people in America, the smartest people in
America,” McCain said. “So many of these problems we face — for example,
energy independence — what’s partisan about that?”

I like Sarah Palin's public speaking ability. I think she is fun to look at, certainly the hottest vice presidential candidate in history. But I looked up some facts. The United States has 10,000 nuclear weapons, 100 aircraft carriers, 3,000,000 people in the armed forces, and ten trillion dollars of debt.

I am now hearing from the Karl Roves of the world that having a 17-year-old daughter pregnant out of wedlock will make Palin sympathetic to millions of Americans who know the pain of that situation. But my question is WHERE WAS THE ADVICE? Do we want a president who cannot communicate to their own child that possibly having a baby a year after you get your driver's license is not the smartest thing to do? Is this the new way for women to break the glass ceiling? To have their daughters throw their babies at it? I want my president to control their children, then they can tell the Navy what to do.

Bush announces federal takeover of Fannie, Freddie
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration, acting to avert the potential for major financial turmoil, says the federal government was taking control of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Officials announced that the executives of both institutions had been replaced. Herb Allison, a former vice chairman of Merrill Lynch, was selected to head Fannie Mae and David Moffett, a former vice chairman of US Bancorp, was picked to head Freddie Mac.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson says the actions were being taken because "Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are so large and so interwoven in our financial system that a failure of either of them would cause great turmoil in our financial markets here at home and around the globe."

Education and Eloquence a Liability?

Since when are education and eloquence liabilities in a president?

Isn’t it ludicrous even to ask such a question? Apparently not, in the presidential race of 2008.

I’ve spent the better part of the last two weeks absorbing and reflecting on the drama of the conventions. I got so whupped up alongside the head with the Palin pick, followed by incredulity at the delirious embrace by her party, that I’m only just now managing to mobilize some reactions. One of the strongest is that I don’t want – and we don’t need – “just a regular Joe – or Jane” – at the helm of this nation, whether as president or vice president.

Palin has been touted as a hockey mom normal folks can relate to, a small-town gal who somehow exudes virtue merely because of those roots, an NRA-backing good ol’ girl who can fish and hunt and dress her game alongside the boys – yet isn’t afraid to keep the boys in line in her state when they misbehave. Rah-rah, Sarah Barracuda.

Many of the contrasts drawn in the media barrage of late have been, interestingly, between Palin and Obama, not Palin and Biden. Perhaps it’s their similar age, and that each has been accused of an experience deficit. Obama’s detractors have further tried to frame him as a self-serving, offensively ambitious, liberal elitist, “out of touch” with regular folk like residents of Wasilla, Alaska — ergo, unfit to be president. (Oops – arrogant and presumptuous of me to resort to Latin; sorry.)

Apparently it’s a problem when a presidential candidate has an Ivy League education. Heaven forbid we’d want to put in office someone with a political science bachelor’s degree from Columbia with a specialization in international affairs, who then went on to Harvard Law School and became the first African-American to edit the Harvard Law Review. As good populists we are not going to make a distinction between Harvard and the University of Idaho.

Nor are we going to suggest that there is any difference in the value or quality of post-graduate experience in which one individual went on to a fellowship at the University of Chicago Law School while the other became a sports broadcaster for a local Anchorage TV station.

Obama, who chose to waste his time in community activism, directed the Illinois Project Vote from April to October 1992, a voter registration drive that marshaled 700 volunteers to achieve its goal of registering 150,000 of 400,000 unregistered African Americans in the state, leading Crain’s Chicago Business to name Obama to its 1993 list of “Forty under 40″ powers to be. After being appointed as a Lecturer in constitutional law at the University of Chicago, Obama joined a small law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development. From there to the Illinois state senate, then to Washington where he held assignments on the Senate Committees for Veterans’ Affairs and Homeland Security, and served as Chairman of the Senate’s subcommittee on European Affairs. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa.

Ms. Palin got her first passport in 2007.

How dare someone suggest that there are different degrees of “inexperience”?

Police recommend charges against Olmert
Posted: 02:22 PM ET
JERUSALEM (CNN) — Israeli police on Sunday recommended that outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert be indicted on corruption charges stemming from two investigations, a police spokesman told CNN.

Police have given their recommendation to Israel’s attorney general and the state prosecution office, which will make a final decision on whether Olmert will be charged, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told CNN.

The recommended indictment stems from police probes into the “Talansky affair,” in which Olmert allegedly received illegal funds and bribes from Jewish-American businessman Morris Talansky, and the “Rishon Tours affair,” in which Olmert was accused of pocketing money for official travels.

Olmert has denied any wrongdoing. He announced on July 30 that he would resign as prime minister once his Kadima party elects a new chairman. He cited “a wave of investigations and criticism” at the hands of his political opponents.

Kadima is scheduled to hold its party primary on September 17.

Cuban officials urge U.S. to lift embargo
Posted: 09:15 PM ET
(CNN) — Cuban officials on Saturday urged the United States to loosen the decades-old trade embargo on the Communist-ruled island in the wake of deadly flooding caused by powerful storms.

A statement written by the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Cuban officials acknowledged that the U.S. government has recently pledged to give humanitarian aid to victims of the severe flooding.

But “if the government of the United States is really willing to cooperate with the Cuban people in face of the tragedy of the hurricane, it is requested to allow the sale to Cuba of those materials considered indispensable and to suspend the restrictions that prevent U.S. companies from offering private commercial credits to our country for the purchase of food in the United States,” the statement said.

Hurricane Ike, a dangerous Category 4 storm with 135 mph winds neared Cuba Saturday.

Cuba has already been hit by Hurricane Gustav in recent weeks.

Chevron Donates $500,000 to Alaska College

SAN RAMON, Calif. -- In an effort to support technological research and development efforts, Chevron donated $500,000 to Kenai Peninsula College’s Kenia River Campus, one of the three institutes in Alaska where a student can get a degree in process technology.

"Chevron said 'this is what we want to see,'" Kenai Peninsula College (KPC) director Gary Turner told the Peninsula Clarion. "I guarantee every dollar we receive from them will benefit our students."

In total, Chevron donated $1 million to the University of Alaska Anchorage. Half that sum went toward the university’s Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program, and the other half will help KPC purchase industry-quality equipment for its process technology, instrumentation and computer electronics program. The pledge marks the largest corporate donation KPC has received in its 44 years of operation.

Chevron presented its gift at the Kenai River Campus' fall barbecue Friday. The event was attended by University of Alaska Chancellor Fran Ulmer and John Zager, Chevron Alaska manager.

"It’s wonderful to get $500,000," Turner told the paper. "That makes it a huge milestone."

Iraqi parliament faces urgent national issues

Sorry,if this was posted earlier..

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD - Iraqi lawmakers end their summer break this week facing urgent tasks of approving a new election law and signing off on a still-unfinished security pact with the U.S. — key steps in laying the foundation for a lasting peace.

The 275-member legislature failed last month to approve a law providing for provincial elections this fall after Kurds objected to a power-sharing arrangement for the oil-rich area around Kirkuk, which they want to incorporate into their self-ruled region in the north.

U.N. and Iraqi election officials warn the balloting cannot be held this year unless parliament approves the measure quickly after it reconvenes Tuesday.

But weeks of private meetings and contacts among Sunni Arab, Shiite and Kurdish lawmakers have failed to produce any breakthrough on the issue, and it was unclear whether the bill would win speedy approval.

Fox News Sunday: Rick Davis Tells Voters To Forget His Lobbyist Ties, Calls Them “Ghosts Of The Past”
By: Nicole Belle on Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at 10:00 AM

Republicans ought to thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for Fox News Sunday. Where else could you get away with this laughingly lame deflection? When Obama Campaign Manager David Axelrod reminded viewers in an earlier segment that McCain’s “reformer” claims are at odds with the people with whom he chooses to staff his campaign–a whole bunch of connected lobbyists, led by uber-lobbyist (allegedly retired) Rick Davis, Davis dismisses the charge by saying that the Obama campaign has nothing left but to chase after “ghosts of the past.”

The past, you say? Oh really? Only if you consider “the past” to be just a few weeks ago.

Working Women Leery of Palin

Working-class women may decide who makes it to the White House, and while Sarah Palin piqued the interest of many undecideds, her gender isn’t enough to override their main concerns over soaring food and gas prices, unaffordable health care, and record-high unemployment. The Los Angeles Times takes the pulse of blue-collar women in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

“I wanted Hillary to win so bad, but I saw Sarah, and it just didn't work for me,” said a $10.50-an-hour cook, who worries about sending her daughter to college. "I have no retirement. Obama understands it's the economy. He knows how we live." One waitress dubbed Palin “the perfect candidate,” but decided to vote for whoever addressed gas prices first. “And—I’ll be danged—it was Obama,” she told the LA Times.

AP Praises McCain Speech That Misrepresents Obama

AP Praises McCain Speech That Misrepresents Obama Health Care Plan

The Associated Press (AP) ran an article that praised Senator McCain's acceptance speech as "a bipartisan pitch." The article outlined the main themes, but politely managed to ignore the fact that Senator McCain found it necessary to completely misrepresent Senator Obama's health care proposal.

Senator McCain claimed that Obama's proposal would force people into a health care plan run by government bureaucrats. This is not true. Senator Obama's plan would give people the option of buying into a publicly run Medicare-type plan, but this would only be an option. Under Senator Obama's plan, no one would be forced to join the public plan, they would be free to stay with their current plan if they chose.

Senator McCain also misrepresented his plan on taxes for ordinary people. He claimed that he would not raise taxes, but his health care plan would raise taxes for tens of millions of middle income workers. McCain proposes making employer payments for health care taxable income. This will be a substantial tax increase for many workers. It also would have been appropriate to note this misrepresentation since Senator McCain has made low taxes so central to his campaign.

As a rule AP is not hesitant to criticize presidential acceptance speeches. The headline for its article on Senator Obama's speech was "Obama Spares Details: Keeps Up Attacks."

It is worth noting that most other news accounts seem to have ignored Senator McCain's misrepresentation of Obama's position on this important issue.

NEW YORK (AP) - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has agreed to sit down with ABC's Charles Gibson later this week for her first television interview since John McCain chose her as his running mate more than a week ago.

ABC would not release any details about where and when Gibson would question Palin; a McCain-Palin adviser had said earlier Sunday that the interview was expected to take place later this week in Alaska. The interview with Palin was confirmed Friday, ABC News spokesman Jeffrey Schneider said.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW:

The interview is a coup for Gibson, who also had the only sit-down with McCain during the Republican National Convention. During that interview, he did not question McCain about Palin's family, a decision that he fretted about for hours, Gibson said in a Web log posted last week.

``Once you know about her daughter's pregnancy, once you know about her husband's political interest in the Alaska Independent Party, once you know about the special nature of their latest child, I think that's enough,'' Gibson wrote.

So I was just playing a video game when my daughter came downstairs hungry for something to eat. While she scoured the kitchen she told me about her day yesterday. She spent it with her best friend who is also a college student. She ran errands with her. One of her errands was to go to her scheduled gyno appt, she didn't want to go alone and my daughter accompanied her. You see, she is a college student so health care is a no frills item and her appointment was at the community family planning clinic. She was worried about going there because there are always fundy protesters who stand outside to hassle the people who use their services. Sure enough when they got there, the fundies were there. My daughter was bragging to me how she "got rid of them". Rather than avoiding the group she parked right next to them and commenced to play Nine Inch Nails at the highest possible volume possible. I put the system in, its very loud just like mine is. She played "Get Down" and within two minutes they moved down the street. So she moved there to park again. That's all it took.

I'm putting this down here for anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation. I'm so proud of my daughter because I know how modest she is, rarely making a spectacle of herself...

if they can handle the tech difficulties, they will *own* progressive talk. They covered it all - in an hour. And, they couldn't have done it without the bloggerinos and bloggerinis.

Oberman is on NBC football

Oberman is on NBC football show right now.

So far he hasn't mentioned Bush, McCain or Palin.

Mandatory Homework for everyone who..

..has participated in the 3rd Party debate. Either watch this 21 min vid from GRITtv from last week

or listen to it at the link below. If you listen you get the full RN that had another story on the front end.

The only reason I post this is because this is better than any of the newscycle drivel on M$M tonight. It's a really heated discussion I can only describe as "civil screaming". Chris Hedges makes a very compelling pitch for 3rd parties. Alice should listen to improve her argument. The other panel members have just as compelling coutner-arguments but what keeps it flowing is Laura Flanders who will admit to voting for Nader but is able to cogently explain the ramifications of throwing away your vote.

If 60th comes back...
I changed my mind. I prefer Luh-buh.
Will explain some other time.

Who is arguing, maggiesboy?

I don't feel like I'm arguing...

anyone notice that Olbermann's been sent down to the minors?

maybe for the rest of the campaign season?

According to you and others I have my opinions because I want to

"FEEL GOOD..."

be "GUILT FREE"

have "NO RESPONSIBILITY"

rubbish...I feel no more of those things went into my decision than anyone else's decision about pretty much anything...I make my choices just like you do - with all the knowledge I can gather...and with the resolve that this is the correct decision for me...

You act like one human's measuring stick for life is the same

as another's...Whatever the hell she is saying (I cannot see it now) it is HER OWN decision...right or wrong...

Besides...Obama has made decisions you don't like, just like I am apparently, and you still are going to vote for him...so don't toss me over as a person because you don't like how I vote.

Or do toss me over...

whatever...

Bond

>>with all the knowledge I

>>with all the knowledge I can gather

who is the Peace and Freedom candidate, Nader, right?

Yes he is

Gloria La Riva is with the Party for Socialism and Liberation - also a candidate on some state ballots.

you don't like how I vote.

>>with all the knowledge I

>>with all the knowledge I can gather

I really don't know how you ignore the 2 most important pieces of information:

1) McCain/Palin will fuck up the country in ways we can't afford.

2) only Obama/Biden has a credible chance of beating McCain/Palin

I like Stewart Alexander a lot.he's a Vp candidate tho

I don't care for Brian Moore so much and he's the Pres. cand with Stewart...

>>also a candidate on some

>>also a candidate on some state ballots.

wow. you have to like *those* chances.

not just one or two but, `some'?

wow, I'm impressed!

oh but which one of yourll "whitey's" knows about the

"coal stove"? ours was a "welcome dover" black as hell (my sister in germany dies with laughter when i even can recall that far to name it

sorry, I'll quit now.

It never changes Chubbs..there will always be Republicans

to put out of office...

It's not that I'm ignoring what you think...

It's that I don't think like you.

Bad or good that's how it is...

true story true story

for real for real

It's rock solid in you that there are only two parties...and

they're your only choices...

I guess - IMHO - Mission Accomplished for the two parties...

and so yeah did i say we used to mishandle it all

till my father took my late brothers hand and put it on the "dover" and burnt it coz he stole?

i learnt my lesson

"continue to steal Lucille"
now there story of my life

It's so tempting to end this (temporarily) with a huge

FUCK YOU!

But that's not how I roll... ;)

But it'll still be two days til I say

oh but wait!!!! im not done yet

just trying to help out here

C-Span is making me crazy

The international view of our elections now. Great stuff.

Yes women with brown hair and glasses are all alike

Fernando...

>>there will always be

>>there will always be Republicans

especially if we don't vote them out of office.

>>It's rock solid in you that there are only two parties.

Come on, that's not fair and you know it.

Show me a grass roots party that has grass roots support up to and includeing the Senate and I'll consider them viable.

but the idea that a 3rd party president could get anything done without such grass roots support is absurd.

The idea that you can vote without being exposed to all the

views equally of all the candidates is also absurd...
