I'm hearing that a major story about McSame is going to drop after the weekend- Who knows, but it's something to chew on.... McCain the Pimp

Betty Bowers, America' Best Christian

I don’t know if it is because of all the Botox that Pan-Am stewardess lookalike and rich, bored voracious pill-popper Cindy got him to try, but it a bit hard to tell when John McCain is joking (especially with that creepy, too-late, too-long, denture-addled “I just made a funny and a poppy in my Depends!” laugh of his).

After all, the basic theme of his acceptance speech tonight was that when he booked out of the Hanoi Hilton he was no longer about his ego and selfish needs, but only about serving America.

As a patriotic American, I find it disturbing that America apparently encouraged him to abandon his sick, devoted wife and throw himself into a flurry of protracted sexual, extramarital affairs until he found someone nubile and rich enough to pay for his ambitions! Honestly, it makes you question America (“USA! USA! USA! USA!”) when she inspires such base, unseemly and selfish behavior!

A Talk with Robert Anton Wilson

Prop: You once said that the law is based on precedents and the past. With technology rapidly increasing, there seems to be no real map for the territory that is coming upon us. If there is going to be some kind of change, socially, how do you think it is going to occur?

Wilson: I don't know how change is going to occur. In a rational world there would be enough politicians on this planet, in each country, that, two or three of them would eventually stumble upon the World Game Center in Philadelphia, founded by Buckminster Fuller, and they would study it intelligently, or assign a team to study it intelligently, and they would take out a few suggestions that seems useful to them. If this happened often enough, the world would keep changing in a way that would be satisfactory to everybody on the planet and hurt nobody.

...

We have a government run almost entirely by lawyers. What do lawyers do? They look up precedent. That means the government is always governed by the past, never by the present, much less the possibilities of the future. They're always looking backwards. A government made up of lawyers is by definition reactionary. Looking backwards, all the time looking backwards.

Scientists Get Death Threats Over Large Hadron Collider

Roger Highfield, Telegraph: Scientists working on the world's biggest machine are being besieged by phone calls and emails from people who fear the world will end next Wednesday, when the gigantic atom smasher starts up.

The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, where particles will begin to circulate around its 17 mile circumference tunnel next week, will recreate energies not seen since the universe was very young, when particles smash together at near the speed of light.

Such is the angst that the American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has even had death threats, said Prof Brian Cox of Manchester University, adding: "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat."

The head of public relations, James Gillies, says he gets tearful phone calls, pleading for the £4.5 billion machine to stop.

Look what Bush is doing now....

U.S. Rescue Seen at Hand for 2 Mortgage Giants
By STEPHEN LABATON and ANDREW ROSS SORKIN
WASHINGTON — Senior officials from the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve on Friday called in top executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage finance giants, and told them that the government was preparing to place the two companies under federal control, officials and company executives briefed on the discussions said.

The plan, which would place the companies into a conservatorship, was outlined in separate meetings with the chief executives at the office of the companies’ new regulator. The executives were told that, under the plan, they and their boards would be replaced and shareholders would be virtually wiped out, but that the companies would be able to continue functioning with the government generally standing behind their debt, people briefed on the discussions said.

It is not possible to calculate the cost of any government bailout, but the huge potential liabilities of the companies could cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and make any rescue among the largest in the nation’s history.

The drastic effort follows the bailout this year of Bear Stearns, the investment bank, as government officials continue to grapple with how to stem the credit crisis and housing crisis that have hobbled the economy. With Bear Stearns, the government provided guarantees, and the bulk of its assets were transferred to JPMorgan Chase, leaving shareholders with a nominal amount.

Under a conservatorship, the common and preferred shares of Fannie and Freddie would be reduced to little or nothing, and any losses on mortgages they own or guarantee could be paid by taxpayers. Shareholders have already lost billions of dollars as the stocks have plunged more than 80 percent this year.

A conservatorship would operate much like a pre-packaged bankruptcy, similar to what smaller companies use to clean up their books and then emerge with stronger balance sheets. It would allow for uninterrupted operation of the companies, crucial players in the diminished mortgage market, where they are now responsible for nearly 70 percent of new loans.

The executives were told that the government had been planning to announce the decision as early as Sunday, before the Asian markets reopen, the officials said. More...

no, my life is not quite that sad.

yet.

Speaking of sand and cats...I hate this part of town sometimes. people around here don't even bother to get their dead cats out of the street after they've been run down.

I don't know if I mentioned the one the road about 30 feet from here. It was on the road until it was nothing but bones poking out of dehydrated flesh and fur. flatter than I ver thought possible. Someone finally tossed it into the bushes by the sidewalk, where it sits to this day, and it stinks. The cat literally, the situation, generally.

And today an pretty little gray cat joined it. I walked by it twice...the second time, a few hours after the first time, it had been hit enough times to...well, you don't need to know.

Everytime I pass then, I think I should scrape them up. but just thinking about it bums me out. actually doing it would probably drive me to tears.

I guess I should just find a shovel and a couple plastic bags and unceremoniously toss them in the dumpster 10 feet away...one short intensely depressing episode as opposed to many, many less depressing episodes.

but I know those cats deserve better. but anything is better than being in the road like that.

sorry to be so depressing...

Why do people wait till

Anyway, that's why I don't let my cats roam at will.

the road, not the bass playing or the mariachi music...

My boys go out for hours on end, but usually don't get too far away from my little back yard.

and I've never seen them anywhere near the road. But I don't want them out there late at night, that seems to be the time the young cats take their chances crossing the road.

the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac takeover by the government.

It should cost tax payers billions. Then they went into jobless claims and foreclosures.

Recession or Depression?

Local newscaster just spoke about the lack of vetting for Palin and the idea we can't ask her questions. In his own opinion, he said she is running for the second highest office in the US and we should know everything about her. Anyone running for office should be properly vetted and that is the News Media's job.

I guess this is spreading now and maybe is waking up the news media since the McCain campaign won't let anyone ask Palin questions. If there is nothing to hide, why won't she answer questions? This is starting to backfire on the McCain campaign.

Harry Reid Puts Lieberman On

Harry Reid Puts Lieberman On Notice
By: John Amato @ 9:14 PM - PDT

(h/t FDL for the video) Anita Dunn gave us an indication something was finally brewing. It’s on CNS, but the word I have so far is it’s true.

Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent and a close friend of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, still caucuses with Democrats, which allows them to control the Senate with a 51-49 majority . A spokesman for Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., indicated Thursday that Lieberman may no longer be welcome.

“Lieberman went too far when he distorted Sen. Obama’s record,” said Reid spokesman Jim Manley. “From Reid’s perspective, (Lieberman) has every right to give a partisan speech to whomever he wants. But he doesn’t have the right to distort Sen. Obama’s record like that. Sen. Reid was very disappointed in Lieberman’s speech.”

Added Manley: “The Democratic caucus will likely revisit Lieberman’s situation after the November elections.”

Asked if Reid was putting Lieberman on notice, Manley replied: “Without overplaying it, the answer is, yes.”

I’m not sure what that means yet, but it is a step in the right direction that took way too long to happen. He’s smeared Obama endlessly. The Democratic Party should have taken much stronger action against Joe many moons ago. Vid at link.

Remember when you were a kid and you asked you Mom or Dad why there were commercials?

they'd explain it was to keep us from having to put a nickle in the tv every 15 inutes.

and then came cable. and, seemingly even more commercials.

Cable cost has gone through the roof since it first came out in the 80s. yet we not only still have commercials, we now have the infomercials you mentioned.

And I think some of them might have commercial breaks?

So cable companies like Comcast and Adelphia went from NOTHING to huge multi-national entities nearly over night...partially thanks to deregulation.

But especially because the consumer has no real choice or, especially, input.

Why can't we have ala carte programming?

there's a lot of channels I simply do not want to watch, like the shopping channels. And others I don't want to support like FOXnews and religious-right networks...

but they all get a cut of the cable dollar and we have no choice in the matter.

"call your local cable provider", they say. But it does no good.

How religion guides Palin By

How religion guides Palin
By Manya A. Brachear | Chicago Tribune reporter
1:46 AM CDT, September 6, 2008
When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin promised to lead the nation with a "servant's heart," evangelical Christians immediately recognized her as one of their own.

Whether before an audience of ministry students or on a national stage at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, the 44-year-old Palin speaks fluently about her faith, striking chords with phrases that evoke Christian virtue. Palin has called on people to pray for the cooperation necessary to build a natural gas pipeline across Alaska, labeled the U.S. mission in Iraq a "task that is from God" and argued that students should be taught the creation account from Genesis in public schools.

In a race where both presidential candidates, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain, have tried to court religious voting blocs, Palin's introduction to the Republican ticket adds another dimension.

Just as McCain's politics are largely shaped by his experience as a prisoner of war and Obama's by his embrace of his racial identity, Palin's approach has been shaped by her relationship with God. Palin sees her government work as paling in comparison to a greater mission.

"I can do my job there in developing our natural resources and doing things like getting the roads paved and making sure our troopers have their cop cars and their uniforms and their guns, and making sure our public schools are funded," she said in June to ministry students at her former church. "But really, all of that stuff doesn't do any good if the people of Alaska's heart isn't right with God."

Palin found palatable
Historically a key constituency for the GOP, conservative Christian voters had been uneasy about McCain, doubting his commitment to fighting abortion. For them, the choice of Palin as his running mate removes doubt, as they know Palin's position on the issue is sealed by her faith.

Palin was baptized as an infant in the Roman Catholic church, but she would spend nearly three decades in the Assemblies of God church, the nation's largest Pentecostal denomination and the church of former U.S. Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft.

She now eschews the denominational label, choosing to attend independent churches in Alaska and calling herself a generic Christian when asked. But she remains connected to the Assemblies of God, addressing pastors' conferences and ministry students.

i don't think her hairbun is becoming... of course that would only be a slight improvement on the overall appearance - it's mostly that maniacal look in her eyes reinforced by the devilish smile that makes the picture very disturbing...

reading last night's thread

man! you night people had so much fun! i wish i could stay up and hang out with this crowd one of these nights! camel toes and bears, the music and the poetry...and the jokes (even I can get these jokes!) what a wild ride, this IS the best blog in the webwide world

Very perceptive Mire

I've been wanting to wipe that smile off her face for days now. Maniacal smile! Very true. The hair? Maybe a nice haircut, yes. When her hair is down it looks stringy. And that bun is used to make her look authoratative, along with the glasses.

hurricane ike

if it comes to New Orleans it's gonna kill a lot of people, because people here are not gonna evacuate again - we're just starting to settle in, it's so wonderful to watch the city slowly coming back to life..... i do believe neworleanians are ready to go down with it this time....

why can't i show a little more sympathy and compassion

for the north carolina people who are dealing with hanna? I just jumped forward and started worrying about ike....i am selfish, yes but also all hurricaned-out, i don't have it in me any more, sick of the whole thing, need to block it out, why do i have the weather channel on?

Yeah right ! These Racists Clowns are So Sick in The Head & Pathetic !

WASHINGTON -- A Republican congressman from Georgia who referred to Barack and Michelle Obama as "uppity" says he wasn't aware of the term's racial overtones and did not intend to insult anyone.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Grantville, Ga., described the Obamas as members of an "elitist-class ... that thinks that they're uppity," according to The Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper.

Asked if he intended to use the word, he said, "Yeah, uppity."

That nut on C-Klan this morning!

The right wing media watch group, Accuracy In Media, are a bunch of kooks. Cliff Kincaid was representing the organization this morning. Check out this from Wikipedia.

------

In November 2005, AIM columnist Cliff Kincaid criticized Fox News for broadcasting a program "The Heat is On," which endorsed the view that global warming represents a serious problem (although the program was broadcast with a disclaimer). Kincaid stated that this "scandal" amounted to a "hostile takeover of Fox News" [4].

In a December 13, 2005 column, Kincaid called for a "Quit Gay Sex" campaign to rival "Quit Smoking Campaigns" launched by certain media outlets in the United States. He contended that homosexual sex is widespread and homosexual men "simply cannot stop having homosexual sex" and that it was spreading HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
-----

Sound familiar!

Critics say AIM's attacks on the media seem to have little to do with actual misrepresentation or inaccuracies in media accounts. They assert that Irvine and AIM is quick to attack groups that do not fit in the group's ideological niche. Donald Graham, the publisher of The Washington Post, alleges that Irvine tends to "throw around accusations about people being communists."[citation needed]

Colorado's State Election Director Resigns

No Official Explanation Yet for Holly Lowder's Sudden and Unexpected Departure, Just 60 Days Prior to Presidential Election in a Very Important 'Swing State'

..But We Have a Few Well-Informed Guesses...
From Rocky Mountain News today...

The director of elections at the secretary of state's office resigned suddenly Thursday.

The departure of Holly Lowder, former Alamosa County clerk, comes two months before what is expected to be one of the biggest elections in recent Colorado history. Lowder's work centered on the implementation of the new statewide voter registration system, said Richard Coolidge, spokesman for the agency.

Sources in CO tell us there will be more coming, likely tomorrow, on this. We're also told that there may be a salacious aspect here that might just make the well-worn euphemism about "election officials being in bed with voting machine vendors," um, somewhat more than just a euphemism. What happened to Let the Market control the Economy?

The Economy Is Strong, Ed. #193
NYT:

Senior officials from the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve on Friday called in top executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage finance giants, and told them that the government was preparing to place the two companies under federal control, officials and company executives briefed on the discussions said.

The repubs don't want big government to handle this until there is a problem. Then the tax payers foot the bill for mistakes the market makes with no oversight.

Obstruction Newsweek: McCain

Obstruction
Newsweek: McCain camp and its Alaska allies move to shut down trooper-gate probe.

Definitely take a look at the Newsweek article. Also take note of the following, that we're going to be looking into next week. Within days of Palin's selection, at least seven of her aides and associates, who had previously agreed to cooperate with the trooper-gate investigation, informed investigator Steve Branchflower that they were now no longer willing to be deposed. Not too that this was immediately after the McCain team deployed what George Stephanopoulos reported was a "rapid response team of about ten operatives that includes lawyers" to the state.

So the question is: what contact did representatives of the McCain campaign have with these aides that had agreed to testify but within days of her selection took back their pledge and are now refusing to cooperate?

Telling the truth up to a point....

Nitpicking
There are plenty of issues in the career of Sarah Palin that deserve a hefty amount of scrutiny, so I'm only going to give this one a few seconds.

The McCain camp is reveling in her sale of the governor's jet on eBay. McCain himself said yesterday, "You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor, and sold it on eBay -- and made a profit!"

Someone should really tell McCain to be more careful with his words:

In fact, the jet did not sell on eBay. It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the plane -- shy of the $2.7 million purchase price -- according to news reports at the time. Reynolds contributed to Palin's campaign in 2006.
Palin, so far as I can tell, has precisely said she auctioned the plane on eBay, without confirming whether or not it actually sold. Just a friendly reminder that details can be pesky things.

--Will Thomas

The repub mentality, leaving out details!

They should say, "Let the market decide ..

.. what to do with the profits. Let the government pickup the pieces when their greedy tactics result in collapse.

what is happening with this mcain interference in the judicial

process has a ring of an eery deja` vue for Italians.... ya'll know the story of how berlusconi went into politics right? dogged by corruption charges and indictments, hints of mafia connections and such, was just a billionaire ceo and "maverick" and nobody knew exactly how he had made his fortune, so what did he do? first he buys a soccer team (yeah, he gets the jingoiism angle down first) - does this remind of a stadium purchase with public funds and team buy in texas, was it baseball or football? whatever, let's get on with the berlusca story.....next step, he decides to enter the arena of politics, from sports and glamor to politics... from then on, all investigations and law suits and judicial problems have been depicted in the media (oh did I mention that he also bought off - and now owns 75% of the networks and tv stations - just as preparation before he entered politics) - so in the media now all this legal and judicial stuff against berlusconi is no longer perceived as legitimate; it is depicted as "political persecution" "judges out of control" "judges with a political agenda"....

and now securely installed without visible opposition other than a lemming very week "shadow" democratic party modeled after the american dlc (they kicked out and destroyed the authentic left wing of the dem party), now berlusconi is changing the juidicial systems and the courts from within, purging the judges that want to go after him, and thundering in the media that this is awful, he's reforming a corrupt judiciary and bla bla

so, why did i mention this? well first, berlusconi is listening to the same people that are moving the string of the bush maccains puppetry, yes, exactly the same people, same names even, same electoral shenanigans (did berlusconi work for the mafia and cia, is this how he made his money? is this how he came to power? the murdoch connection allowed him to build his media empire.... that's a rumor floating out there)

let's get to the point: macain and palin are doing the same; now suddenly the judicial things against her are suddenly "political", it is those liberal that are persecuting and smearing her for "political" reasons, they have an agenda

this is how criminals rise to power

watch out america - just take a look at what's happening in italy, (if you have time) they're now openly admitting they are fascists again and they like it that way.....

Can Palin also galvanize the US left?

Reuters

ST. PAUL - Sarah Palin is the magnet John McCain needs to attract religious and social conservatives who are not convinced he's one of them.

But the little-known first-term Alaska governor is a big risk for McCain who had hoped to market his brand of maverick Republican politics to Democrats and moderates in his party.

McCain, who will accept his party's presidential nomination for the November 4 election on Thursday at its national convention, ignited conservatives by picking as his running mate the staunchly anti-abortion Palin.

Despite his strong opposition to abortion rights, evangelicals have stayed lukewarm on McCain. He did not back a failed federal ban on gay marriage and broke with them on other social issues such as his support for stem cell research.

The first woman vice presidential candidate for the Republican party, Palin is a conservative Christian, avid hunter and has five children.

But her "God and guns" persona may also benefit Democrat Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden. Some experts say she will galvanize abortion rights groups and moderate faith groups in a way a more moderate selection for the Republican ticket might have avoided.

"Everybody pays attention to the mobilizing affect on the right but equally important is the mobilizing affect that Palin's nomination makes for the left," said Michael Lindsay, a political sociologist at Rice University in Houston who has written extensively on the U.S. evangelical movement.

"In many ways she is a much more mobilizing figure for both sides than John McCain because he is seen as much more of a moderate middle of the road political figure," he said.

Obama's campaign said that after her fiery speech on Wednesday night to the Republican National Convention, $8 million had poured into it from more than 130,000 donors and that it was on track to hit $10 million by the time McCain takes the stage Thursday night.

"Sarah Palin's attacks have rallied our supporters in ways we never expected, and we fully expect John McCain's attacks tonight to help us make our grassroots organization even stronger," said Jen Psaki, a campaign spokesman.

Abortion rights activists said Palin gave them a target and threw McCain's own views into sharp relief.

"We on the pro-choice side have had a hard time convincing pro-choice women that McCain is not their friend because he has a reputation of being a maverick," said Sarah Stoesz, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota.

"His selection of Palin has cast his position (against abortion rights) in a bright shining light that can't be ignored," she told Reuters.

Democrats have been concerned that women supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton's failed bid for their party's presidential nomination would desert Obama after he did not pick her as his No. 2.

THEOCRAT ALLEGATIONS

Moderate religious groups and liberal activists have already started to pin the "religious extremism" label on Palin -- a label that wouldn't stick to McCain.

They focus on her reported comments to a church in Alaska that U.S. soldiers in Iraq were "on a task that is from God," on her strident opposition to abortion and other "culture war" issues which her candidacy has revived.

"Governor Palin appears out of touch with many people of faith, who are desperate for leaders who will move our country beyond the politics of division," said James Salt, organizing director of the centrist Catholics United.

The moderate Interfaith Alliance said it was concerned by Palin's "theocratic rhetoric."

:John McCain: Morally, Mentally, and Emotionally Unfit

Headlined on 9/5/08:
John McCain: Morally, Mentally, and Emotionally Unfit

Madison, WI (OpEdNews) – September 5, 2008 – The Republican Party has now nominated the most unqualified candidate for the Presidency in our history, with the possible exception of George W. Bush. Over his entire life-span, he has repeatedly shown that he is out of touch with reality, impulsive and reckless in his judgment, and intellectually lazy and lacking in curiosity.

You already know that he thinks you have to make $5,000,000 a year in income to be rich. How out of touch with reality is that? You already know he can't remember how many houses he and his wife own. How truly bizarre is that? At a bikers' rally, he suggested that his wife should enter the "Miss Buffalo Chip" contest, a lewd affair that includes a topless competition. Did he have any idea what he was talking about? Did he even care?

He appears to be a man who has been successful with women and uses them. He not only offered Cindy to score points at that bikers' rally but sent her off to the Republic of Georgia in a crass political stunt. His personal life displays a preference for beautiful women, especially models and beauty queens. He married a beautiful divorcee, Carol Shepp, adopted the former model's two children and had a daughter with her.

McCain has blamed the failure to his first marriage on his own selfishness and immaturity. One month after divorcing his first wife, he married Cindy Hensley, 17 years his junior. A cheerleader at USC, they both say that he lied about his age by taking off four years and she by adding four to hers. Even though she has half-siblings, she refers to herself as an "only child" and suppresses their existence. She seems to be a woman who puts appearance before reality.

According to the AP, "McCain was lucky. Carol McCain, who had been in a crippling car accident while her husband was imprisoned in Vietnam, let him out of the marriage without theatrics or recriminations." Cindy, after all, was "the other woman." If the Christian Right cares about family values-really cares about them rather than merely talking about them when it is politically expedient-how many commandments has McCain violated here? Respect for others is the core of morality and McCain has no respect for women.

He was equally "lucky" in his professional life. Finishing near the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy, he described his experience as a "four year course of insubordination and rebellion". Calling himself a "maverick" appears to be a way to disguise his arrogance and immaturity. Given his own military history, does he even have the self-discipline to subordinate himself to the authority of the U.S. Constitution?

There are reasons to wonder. According to the AP, before he was shot down over Vietnam, he had already crashed a plane into Corpus Christi Bay, ejected from another jet that flamed out as he was flying solo, and knocked down power lines while flying too low in Southern Spain. Most stunning of all, he had survived an explosion aboard the USS Forrestal that left 134 dead.

According to Wayne Madsen, an investigative journalist, "it is believed by many crewmen and those who have investigated the case that McCain deliberately 'wet started' his A-4E to shake up the guy in the plane behind him, . . ."-as a practical joke, in other words-"[which] apparently 'cooked off' and launched a Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that touched off the explosions and massive fire" that killed 134. "He was quickly transferred to the USS Oriskany," no doubt to avoid being savaged by shipmates. That would have been 134 counts of manslaughter.

I am a former commissioned officer in the Marine Corps. Anyone with a military background can confirm that, given his history of repeated screw-ups, McCain should have been removed from flight status and subjected to courts-martial. Had that been done, 134 lives might have been sparred. I believe that did not happen only because his father and grandfather were four-star admirals and he was receiving preferential treatment.

Such success as McCain has enjoyed appears to have been based upon 5 ½ years as a POW, who was tortured by the North Vietnamese, a story which he tells at the drop of a hat, with a disarming demeanor. But there appears to be a hidden story here. What would 5 ½ years of torture by the North Vietnamese do to you or me? Surely, if the experience was as horrendous as he suggests, then it has to have left profound emotional and mental scars, an issue that has arisen in other cases.

In 1999, the McCain campaign-engaged in a contest with George W. Bush-released 1,500 pages of medical reports, which included a great deal about his mental health. They were open to public inspection. This time around, however, the campaign hesitated and delayed their release. When it finally happened, they restricted access to a few selected reporters. One of them, Sanjay Gupta of CBS NEWS, observed that there was very little-almost nothing-about his psychological state. Something is wrong. Concealing information the nation needs is grossly corrupt and immoral.

It may not be Alzheimer's, but if John McCain is suffering from other serious mental problems, the American people are entitled to know. When he sang about bombing Iran-"Bomb, bomb, bomb; bomb boom Iran"-to the tune of The Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann", that should have set off alarm bells with the national press. It has to be investigated.

Past indications of his reckless judgment have been reinforced by his choice of a transparently unqualified running mate, Sarah Palin, another beauty queen. He married a trophy wife and has now selected a trophy nominee to run with him. She is pro-life, even in the case of rape and incest, and supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

She belongs to the NRA and favors teaching creationism in the public schools. The problem is that creationism is not science and has no place in the science curriculum, as I explain in my latest book, RENDER UNTO DARWN. We need to get religion out of public schools, not put more in!

She is the governor of a large state with a small population, the former mayor of a hamlet, and-we are told-a member of the PTA. She received 115,000 votes during her election as Alaska's governor, not many more than Barack Obama drew to his acceptance speech at Mile High Stadium. The typical member of the House has more constituents.

So this 72-year old man with a history of cancer is putting an anti-environmental, anti-choice, creationist zealot-who has so little respect for other women that she does not trust them to choose for themselves about the most private matters!-just a heartbeat away from the Presidency of a nation with a population of some 300,000,000! How responsible is that?

Big Oil and Palin’s ‘experience’

Big Oil and Palin’s ‘experience’
By Jerry Mazza
Online Journal Associate Editor

Sep 5, 2008, 00:18

It’s difficult to evaluate the experience of the Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, since her job as governor of Alaska was somewhat atypical. Aside from the fact that the state has a population of 680,000, about a third of Brooklyn’s, Alaska has a budget surplus of $5 billion thanks to its oil and natural gas supplies. After you gasp, listen to this . . .

In fact, Alaska, as the New York Times reported, is now passing out a $1,200-per-resident oil-bounty bonus check. This while the governors of 31 other states wonder how their people, working in the shattered US economy, will make it through the winter with the price of fuel oil, gas and other commodities going through the roof.

Actually, one third of Alaska’s economy has been sustained by Big Oil, another third by federal spending, and the balance by the state’s own efforts. And so, working people across the country might have real trouble identifying with the bonanza belt’s US oil and natural gas exploitation. I don’t know of many extractive industries -- or of any other kind in America -- that are passing out bounty bonus checks. Do you?

Mrs. Palin arrived in office in time for the bonanza, having run-out some of her own Republican Party members from cash-guzzling power, albeit with considerable help from state Democrats, who are actually a minority in the legislature. She wielded her power to best her own party members on important bills and suggested that those in disagreement with her were in the pocket of “Big Oil.” Actually, the whole state of Alaska is in the pocket of Big Oil.

And Gregg's a columnist for the Anchorage Daily News and the Juneau Empire.

They always start late.

So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

The national media is all over Sarah's little town of Wasilla and what they are finding should prove shocking to anybody who really believed that Sarah Palin was ethical, honest, or even a human being.

Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive.

I read this with a mixture of revulsion and sense of relief that finally people are learning about the REAL Sarah Palin. And they are also learning about just how corrupt our Republican party is up here in the last frontier.

“The GOP is kind of like organized crime up here,” an insurance agent in Anchorage who knows the Palin family, explained. “It’s corrupt and arrogant. They’re all rich because they do private sweetheart deals with the oil companies, and they can destroy anyone. And they will, if they have to.”

“Once Palin became mayor,” he continued, “She became part of that inner circle.”

Newsweek - Isikoff: The education of Sarah

Bushies Come to Palin's Aid
Michael Isikoff
By Michael Isikoff

The McCain team has hastily assembled a team of former Bush White House aides to tutor the vice-presidential candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, on foreign-policy issues, to write her speeches and to begin preparing her for her all-important Oct. 2 debate against Sen. Joe Biden.

Steve Biegun, who once served as the No. 3 National Security Council official under Condoleezza Rice at the White House, has been hired as chief foreign-policy adviser to the Alaska governor, campaign officials told NEWSWEEK. After taking leave from his job as vice president for international affairs at Ford Motor Co. last Friday, Biegun flew to St. Paul and, together with McCain’s foreign-policy guru Randy Schuenemann, began briefings for Palin on national-security issues—an area where her resume is conspicuously thin.

Biegun is hardly the only Bushie to be tapped for Palin duty. Among others:

Matt Scully, a former Bush White House speechwriter who helped draft some of the major foreign-policy addresses during the president’s first term, is working on Palin’s acceptance speech to the convention Wednesday night.

Mark Wallace, a former lawyer for the Bush 2000 campaign who served in a variety of administration jobs including chief counsel at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and deputy ambassador to the United Nations, has been put in charge of “prep” for the debate against Biden.

Wallace’s wife, Nicolle Wallace, the former White House communications director, has taken over the same job for Palin.

Tucker Eskew, another senior Bush White House communications aide, is serving as senior counselor to Palin’s operation.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the former chief economist at the Council of Economic Advisers who has been serving as top economics guru for the McCain campaign, has moved over to serve as Palin’s chief domestic-policy adviser.

The proliferation of former Bush White House aides in the Palin team may strike some as ironic—and could even provide some fodder for the Democrats—given the McCain camp’s efforts to distance itself from the unpopular president. (It has been widely noted, for example, that while the president is addressing the convention tonight by satellite, neither the president nor Vice President Cheney will be coming anywhere near St. Paul. And when Palin's selection was announced last week, McCain aides touted it as an example of the senator returning to his "reformer roots" and rebelling against the GOP establishment.)

One administration critic, Steve Clemons of the New America Foundation, said today that while he personally liked Biegun and viewed him as “extremely competent,” his retention as Palin’s foreign-policy tutor could have unpleasant consequences. Describing Biegun—a Russia expert who once served as staff director for Sen. Jesse Helms at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee—as a “big gun” in conservative foreign-policy circles, Clemens said “he will turn her into an advocate of Cheneyism and Cheney’s view of national-security issues.”

Silver State of Nevada Is 11th Bank Failure This Year (Update2)

By Alison Vekshin and Ari Levy

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Silver State Bank of Henderson, Nevada was closed by U.S. regulators today, the 11th bank to collapse this year amid a surge in soured real-estate loans stemming from the worst housing slump since the Depression.

Silver State, with $2 billion in assets and $1.7 billion in deposits, was shut by the Nevada Financial Institutions Division and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the FDIC said today in a statement. Nevada State Bank in Las Vegas will assume the deposits from Silver State, which was run by Silver State Bancorp. The failed bank's offices will open Sept. 8 as branches of Nevada State and National Bank of Arizona, the FDIC said.

``Deposits will continue to be insured by the FDIC, so there is no need for customers to change their banking relationship,'' the FDIC said.

Banks are being closed at the fastest pace in 14 years and regulators have publicly ordered dozens of institutions to shore up capital or restrict their business. California lender IndyMac Bancorp Inc., which had $32 billion in assets, was closed July 11 in the third-largest bank seizure, contributing to a 14 percent drop in the U.S. deposit insurance fund that had $45.2 billion at the end of the second quarter.

In July, Silver State announced the resignation of Andrew McCain as a director of the bank. McCain, who had served on the audit committee and was a director for five months, is the son of Republican presidential nominee John McCain. A call to the campaign's press line wasn't immediately returned.

Nevada State

Nevada State will buy insured deposits for a 1.3 percent premium, the FDIC said. Silver State had about $20 million in uninsured deposits in 500 accounts, the FDIC said. The FDIC insures deposits of up to $100,000 per depositor per bank, and up to $250,000 for some retirement accounts at 8,451 institutions with $13.3 trillion in assets.

The FDIC last week said 117 banks were classified as ``problem'' in the second quarter, a 30 percent jump from the first quarter. The agency doesn't identify ``problem'' lenders.

``More banks will come on the list as credit problems worsen,'' FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair said at an Aug. 26 Washington news conference.

DEUTSCH: There is the new creation that the feminist woman has not figured out in 40 years of the feminist ideal that men can take in a woman in power and women can celebrate a woman in power. Hillary Clinton didn’t figure it out. She didn’t put a skirt on! […]

Fox News: 'McCain's TV Commercials Contain ... Out-Right Lies'

Wait, we're seriously talking about Fox News? The Fox News?

How transparent are McCain's bogus claims? Even Fox News has noticed. Consider this report from Major Garrett:

Based on the crowd reaction to recent attacks from Barack Obama and Joe Biden about John McCain's tax policy, the Republican nominee may have something to worry about. [...]

The crowds roar with approval when Obama and Biden describe their plans for a middle class tax cut and boo loudly at statistics showing how McCain's continuation of the Bush tax cuts favor the wealthy. Of course, these are partisan Obama crowds. But it would be unwise for anyone seriously backing McCain to dismiss their full-throated roars for Obama-Biden on an issue that historically has favored the GOP nominee. [...]

Add to this the mounting evidence that McCain's TV commercials assailing Obama's tax policy contain serious distortions, if not out-right lies.

Wait, is that a Fox News report accusing John McCain of blatant dishonesty? Yep, I think it is.

Well, that's not what I wanted to read first thing this morning.

Palin blames media for daughter's pregnancy

Andy Borowitz

Coming out on the offensive after a day of controversy, presumptive GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin said today that the media was to blame for making her daughter Bristol pregnant.

"My husband and I are well aware that Bristol is pregnant, and we know who made her that way -- the media," she told reporters in Pittsburgh.

It has become common in presidential campaigns for candidates to lash out against the news media, but Gov. Palin's attack was the first known example of a politician blaming the media for her daughter's pregnancy.

Gov. Palin went on to say that since the media had made her daughter pregnant, it was now up to the media to "do the right thing and marry her."

Moments after the governor's statement, the National Enquirer said that it would marry Bristol Palin in exchange for exclusive rights to the wedding photos and the first pictures of the baby.

The Enquirer's proposal was just one of several positive developments for Gov. Palin, who today picked up the endorsement of Unplanned Parenthood.

Elsewhere, the Republican Party officially changed its slogan to "Condoms First."

Poll: Obama Faring Poorly Among Racists

Bigots Oppose Barack by 1000-1 Margin

In a potentially ominous sign for the presumptive Democratic nominee, a new poll shows Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill) trailing far behind G.O.P. standard bearer Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) among voters who identify themselves as racists.

Pundits and pollsters alike have wondered about the role racists might play in the 2008 presidential contest, but the new survey released today was the first concrete attempt to take the pulse of this key voting bloc.

The poll, conducted by Duh Magazine, suggests that Mr. Obama faces an uphill battle in his effort to win the votes of dyed-in-the-wool bigots.

"We wanted to know, why isn't Barack Obama closing the deal among racists?" said Charles Plugh, editor-in-chief of Duh. "The answer seems to be, because he's black."

In a head-to-head match-up, likely bigots chose Sen. McCain over Sen. Obama by a margin of one thousand to one, with a majority of racists saying they "strongly disagree" with Sen. Obama's decision not to be white.

Asked under what conditions they would conceivably vote for a black presidential candidate, 95% of racists responded, "Only if he was running against someone from a group I hated even more, such as Arabs."

Duh editor Plugh says the poll indicates that Sen. Obama "has his work cut out for him" if he is going to make up lost ground among racists.

"Sen. Obama made a choice at the beginning of this campaign to run as a black man," Mr. Plugh said. "He could change his position on that, but racists might see that as too little, too late."

Boeing Machinists on Strike

Boeing Machinists on Strike

Some 27,000 Boeing machinists launched a strike early this morning after failing to reach an agreement with the company on a new contract, reports Reuters. A boisterous crowd of more than 100 workers gathered near the entrance of Boeing's factory in Everett, Washington, whistling, honking and waving picket signs as the strike started. The action followed two days of fruitless emergency talks with a federal mediator after the union rejected Boeing's latest offer.

Boeing said it would keep its plants open, but its massive assembly lines and plane production will stop. The strike could cost the company about $100 million in revenue a day. No further talks are planned. Machinists earn about $65,000 a year with overtime. They're seeking a 13% wage hike over three years and a rollback of provisions that allow Boeing to outsource work.

Ralph Nader volunteer, Peace and Freedom state official beaten, hospitalized at GOP convention; PF Party condemns 'brutal' attack

MINNEAPOLIS -

A volunteer with the Ralph Nader for President campaign - and an official of the Peace and Freedom Party California State Central Committee - was beaten by police and hospitalized at the Republican National Convention here in what party leaders condemned as a "brutal assault on Barry Burgess and our liberties."

Burgess, elected to the Peace and Freedom Party Contra Costa County Central Committee and state committee in June, was attacked distributing literature for the Ralph Nader for President campaign, according to Kevin Akin, California State Chair, Peace and Freedom Party. Atkins statement follows:

"Barry Burgess was handing out literature for Peace and Freedom presidential candidate Ralph Nader (and) was the subject of an unprovoked attack by club-wielding police, who inflicted head injuries and arrested him... he was treated at a hospital and released, and is now recovering at a Nader supporter's home.

"Following similar but smaller attacks on demonstrators in Denver, the police attacks on peaceful demonstrators in Minneapolis, which have occurred without any criticism from leaders of the Republican and Democratic Parties, show how seriously our civil liberties have been eroded.

"The Peace and Freedom Party demands accountability from Minneapolis, Minnesota and federal authorities, and an investigation with appropriate consequences for those engaging in this mass brutality and intimidation. We also demand that all the trumped-up charges against those exercising their constitutional rights be dropped.

Alexander would also want other left groups involved; such as the Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL), Freedom Socialist Party (FSP), the Green Party, the Liberty Union Party, Workers World Party, Communist Party USA, and many other left groups and activists.” Alexander says he hopes “a national conference could convene by May 2009 and use the struggle for May Day as a kickoff.”

Obama hits McCain on Social Security

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer

NEWARK, N.J. - Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama criticized Republican John McCain's approach to Social Security on Saturday, saying it would undermine the government program aimed mainly at retirees.

Obama said McCain's campaign has suggested trimming Social Security benefits and raising the eligibility age, according to prepared remarks of his speech to a gathering of the AARP. Obama was addressing the group via satellite.

McCain has not specifically embraced such plans. But by saying "everything is on the table" in discussing changes to Social Security, he has opened himself to such criticisms from Democrats.

Obama also said McCain wants to privatize a portion of Social Security. McCain has praised the notion of letting younger workers place a portion of their Social Security taxes into a package that is invested and follows them to retirement, but he has not made it a campaign promise.

Fake Soldiers Used In RNC Video

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/04/cbsnews_investigates/main44158...

...
But CBS News found that the footage of the ‘funeral’ and soldiers is what is called ‘stock’ footage. The soldiers were actors and the funeral scene was from a one-day film shoot, produced in June. No real soldiers were used during production.

The footage, sold by stock-film house Getty Images was produced by a commercial filmmaker in Chicago. Both Getty and the production company, Mr. Big Films, confirmed that the footage was shot on spec and sold to the Republican National Committee.

One of the actors, Perry Denton of Chicago, Ill. also confirmed that he was hired on a day-rate as an actor for the shoot and told CBS News he was surprised to learn the footage was shown at the convention.

Scarborough On McCain

Scarborough On McCain Campaign’s War Against The Media: ‘I Think They’re Making A Mistake’
In her speech on Wednesday night, Sarah Palin attacked journalists for scrutinizing her record. “I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite,” she said, “then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.”

During an interview with ThinkProgress in St. Paul yesterday, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough told us, “The McCain campaign has made a very calculated decision they’re going to run against the press. Personally, I don’t think it works.” He continued:

Attacking the press for conservatives, for Republicans, it always provides a sugar high. It excites the base. It is never ever worth the pay off. … Don’t engage in a war. I think McCain’s campaign is making a mistake. Because that never pays off in the end.

But, they’ve adopted that strategy. Make no mistake of it. They’ve adopted the strategy publicly, privately. They’re fighting behind the scenes. And we’ll see — maybe it works this year. I don’t think so though.

The McCain campaign recently said journalists are creating a “faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee.” In a jeering and sarcastic column this past week, Politico’s Roger Simon wrote, “On behalf of the elite media, I would like to say we are very sorry” for asking basic questions about Palin’s record.

Scarborough said he’s always had a better relationship with the Obama campaign than with the McCain campaign. He added, “The Bush White House — not a big friend of mine. I think they stopped talking to me after Hurricane Katrina.” Watch it: at link

When Palin was first announced last Friday as John McCain’s vice presidential running mate, Scarborough declared that she had too little foreign policy experience for the job. Earlier this week, ThinkProgress questioned whether Scarborough was backtracking a bit from his initial criticism.

But during the interview yesterday, Scarborough reiterated his initial concerns. In the wake of developments in Georgia and Pakistan, Scarborough said now is “no time to have a vice president that has so little experience. And I still agree with that.” That being said, he added, “she has a remarkable resume.”

Since the last federal election in 2006, volunteers like Graham combined with the enthusiasm generated by the Obama-Clinton struggle to add more than 2 million Democrats to voter rolls in the 28 states that register voters according to party affiliation. Bhutto widower sweeps Pakistan presidential polls

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Asif Ali Zardari secured a large win in Pakistan's presidential elections on Saturday, capping a remarkable rise from jail, exile and his wife Benazir Bhutto's assassination just nine months ago.

The controversial front-runner swept a poll among lawmakers to become the 14th president in Pakistan's short but turbulent history, taking power in the world's only nuclear-armed Islamic state and frontline "war on terror" ally.

"It is an historic win. It is a victory for democracy," said Sherry Rehman, the country's information minister and a close aide of Bhutto.

"This man suffered jail for more than 11 years for the sake of democracy and today he is elected as the president of the country and it is a sign of the strengthening of democracy."

My doctor...wanted me to wear a sling. I just couldn't do it.
-----
Obviously a sling immobilizes an arm and allows it to be restive which allows it to heal, but there is a secondary advantage that I believe is more important: A sling is a constant reminder to not reflexively use the arm to do something stupid and ill-advised, like reaching up into the cabinet for a can of beans.

That's my advice. I trashed my right shoulder in May and allowed the arm hang limp for a few days. When it felt better, I reflexively did something stupid, effectively setting the healing process back into the Stone Age.

So I bought a sling and wore it while I was at risk of reflexively doing something stupid. Many times I started to use the arm, the sling sent a signal to my brain, and my brain said, "What? Are you crazy?"

I am repeating myself with the following comment.

The low-tech coiffure is part of a Fundamentalist's religious uniform. I submit the following passage from Corinthians as the source of the Fundamentalist belief that women should have long hair (and men should not). The bun is an offshoot of the biblical directive because long hair is a constant interference during daily activities.

1 Corinthians 11: ...13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering...

The entire passage in Corinthians contains more Talibangelistic nonsense if you are so inclined to read it.

Palin Attended 5 Colleges In 6 Years

(A bit old..Last month..But,I hadn't heard this)

The Huffington Post from AP

POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

50-60 miles inland would be nice, even though it might take a 6 hours drive in the traffic of an evacuation, the problem is that hotels in that distance range get filled up immediately - for gustav, still barely on the wednesday before last week (as soon as talk was becoming serious) places as far as Jackson MS had been booked up solid - i think Memphis or Nashville TN was the only option at that point, involving a very long and slow haul by car; i wish there was a train we could take; yes there were trains for the subsidized mass evacuations, but i mean trains regular trains that you can take to go anywhere - i'd love to just jump on a train and go "anywhere"

The Resentment Strategy

The Resentment Strategy

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/05/opinion/05krugman.html

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: September 4, 2008

Can the former mayor of New York City, a man who, as USA Today put it, “marched in gay pride parades, dressed up in drag and lived temporarily with a gay couple and their Shih Tzu” — that was between his second and third marriages — really get away with saying that Barack Obama doesn’t think small towns are sufficiently “cosmopolitan”?

Can the vice-presidential candidate of a party that has controlled the White House, Congress or both for 26 of the past 28 years, a party that, Borg-like, assimilated much of the D.C. lobbying industry into itself — until Congress changed hands, high-paying lobbying jobs were reserved for loyal Republicans — really portray herself as running against the “Washington elite”?

Yes, they can.

On Tuesday, He Who Must Not Be Named — Mitt Romney mentioned him just once, Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin not at all — gave a video address to the Republican National Convention. John McCain, promised President Bush, would stand up to the “angry left.” That’s no doubt true. But don’t be fooled either by Mr. McCain’s long-ago reputation as a maverick or by Ms. Palin’s appealing persona: the Republican Party, now more than ever, is firmly in the hands of the angry right, which has always been much bigger, much more influential and much angrier than its counterpart on the other side.

What’s the source of all that anger?

Some of it, of course, is driven by cultural and religious conflict: fundamentalist Christians are sincerely dismayed by Roe v. Wade and evolution in the curriculum. What struck me as I watched the convention speeches, however, is how much of the anger on the right is based not on the claim that Democrats have done bad things, but on the perception — generally based on no evidence whatsoever — that Democrats look down their noses at regular people.

Thus Mr. Giuliani asserted that Wasilla, Alaska, isn’t “flashy enough” for Mr. Obama, who never said any such thing. And Ms. Palin asserted that Democrats “look down” on small-town mayors — again, without any evidence.

What the G.O.P. is selling, in other words, is the pure politics of resentment; you’re supposed to vote Republican to stick it to an elite that thinks it’s better than you. Or to put it another way, the G.O.P. is still the party of Nixon.

One of the key insights in “Nixonland,” the new book by the historian Rick Perlstein, is that Nixon’s political strategy throughout his career was inspired by his college experience, in which he got himself elected student body president by exploiting his classmates’ resentment against the Franklins, the school’s elite social club. There’s a direct line from that student election to Spiro Agnew’s attacks on the “nattering nabobs of negativism” as “an effete corps of impudent snobs,” and from there to the peculiar cult of personality that not long ago surrounded George W. Bush — a cult that celebrated his anti-intellectualism and made much of the supposed fact that the “misunderestimated” C-average student had proved himself smarter than all the fancy-pants experts.

And when Mr. Bush turned out not to be that smart after all, and his presidency crashed and burned, the angry right — the raging rajas of resentment? — became, if anything, even angrier. Humiliation will do that.

Can Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin really ride Nixonian resentment into an upset election victory in what should be an overwhelmingly Democratic year? The answer is a definite maybe.

By selecting Barack Obama as their nominee, the Democrats may have given Republicans an opening: the very qualities that inspire many fervent Obama supporters — the candidate’s high-flown eloquence, his coolness factor — have also laid him open to a Nixonian backlash. Unlike many observers, I wasn’t surprised at the effectiveness of the McCain “celebrity” ad. It didn’t make much sense intellectually, but it skillfully exploited the resentment some voters feel toward Mr. Obama’s star quality.

That said, the experience of the years since 2000 — the memory of what happened to working Americans when faux-populist Republicans controlled the government — is still fairly fresh in voters’ minds. Furthermore, while Democrats’ supposed contempt for ordinary people is mainly a figment of Republican imagination, the G.O.P. really is the Gramm Old Party — it really does believe that the economy is just fine, and the fact that most Americans disagree just shows that we’re a nation of whiners.

But the Democrats can’t afford to be complacent. Resentment, no matter how contrived, is a powerful force, and it’s one that Republicans are very, very good at exploiting.

WASILLA, Alaska — Shortly after taking office as governor in 2006, Sarah Palin sent an e-mail message to Paul E. Riley, her former pastor in the Assembly of God Church, which her family began attending when she was a youth. She needed spiritual advice in how to do her new job, said Mr. Riley, who is 78 and retired from the church.

“She asked for a biblical example of people who were great leaders and what was the secret of their leadership,” Mr. Riley said.

He wrote back that she should read again from the Old Testament the story of Esther, a beauty queen who became a real one, gaining the king’s ear to avert the slaughter of the Jews and vanquish their enemies. When Esther is called to serve, God grants her a strength she never knew she had.

Mr. Riley said he thought Ms. Palin had lived out the advice as governor, and would now do so again as the Republican Party’s vice-presidential nominee.

“God has given her the opportunity to serve,” he said. “And God has given her the strength to carry out her goals.”

Running From Reality

Running From Reality

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/06/opinion/06herbert.html?hp

By BOB HERBERT
Published: September 6, 2008

If there was one pre-eminent characteristic of the Republican convention this week, it was the quality of deception. Words completely lost their meaning. Reality was turned upside down.

From the faux populist gibberish mouthed by speaker after speaker, you would never have known that the Republicans have been in power over the past several years and used that titanic power to lead the country to its present sorry state.

In his acceptance speech on Thursday night, Senator John McCain did his best Sam Cooke imitation (“A Change is Gonna Come”) and vowed to put the country “back on the road to prosperity and peace.”

Mr. McCain spoke at the end of a day in which stock market indexes plunged. The next morning the Labor Department gave us the grim news that another 84,000 jobs had been lost in August, and that the official unemployment rate had climbed to 6.1 percent — the highest in five years.

If there were any good ideas at this convention of mostly rich and mostly right-wing delegates about how to haul the country out of this mess that the G.O.P. has gotten it into, they were kept well hidden. Perhaps they were tucked away behind the more prominently displayed creationism and “just-say-no to global warming” documents.

It stretches the mind almost to the breaking point to think of John McCain as an agent of substantive change. He once believed that Phil Gramm was the most qualified person in the United States to be president. And he now believes that Sarah Palin is the most qualified to be vice president.

That is not the fault of Mr. Gramm or Ms. Palin. But it sure tells us a lot about the judgment of John McCain.

Mr. McCain is a warrior, a former fighter pilot, and it’s no secret that Americans have long been thrilled by the romantic Top Gun narrative of fighter pilots, those specialists in the realm of the dangerous and the reckless. But we’ve also seen what dangerous and reckless behavior in the White House can do to a nation.

Sarah Palin may someday become president, and for all we know she may be a great one. But she was not chosen as Mr. McCain’s running mate after long and careful consideration and consultation. The best evidence is that she was a somewhat impulsive choice. Voters would be well advised to proceed with caution.

For most voters, the No. 1 issue in this campaign is the financial struggle facing working families that are trying to cope with job losses, declining wages, the high cost of health care, home foreclosures, bankruptcies and the like.

To a great extent these problems are the result of national policies, forged under Republican rule, that overwhelmingly favored the interests of the very wealthy over working people.

Senator McCain’s economic guru through all of this was Mr. Gramm, a former Republican senator from Texas and chairman of the banking committee. He was a demon for deregulation, and he and his wife, Wendy, who once led the presidential Task Force on Regulatory Relief in the Reagan administration, were among the big recipients of Enron’s largess.

Phil Gramm was one of the lead architects of the breathtakingly irresponsible policies (No more restraints! No more regulation!) that led to the subprime mortgage meltdown and the current credit disaster.

A corporate insider in the Bush-Cheney mold, Mr. Gramm was thought to be in line to serve as treasury secretary in a McCain administration until July when he put his foot very publicly in his mouth. To Senator McCain’s great embarrassment, Mr. Gramm dismissed the economic downturn as a “mental recession” and complained that the U.S. had become a “nation of whiners.”

That may have been a political no-no, but it was an accurate expression of the slavish devotion of the G.O.P. to the rich and powerful among us, and of the party’s contempt for the interests of working families and the poor. Senator McCain, it should be noted, fully shared Mr. Gramm’s anti-regulatory zeal.

This is an odd crowd, indeed, to be offering itself as a champion for working people.

Senator McCain has been a virtuoso at schmoozing and using the press, which he once jokingly referred to as his base. Much of the press has eagerly collaborated in the idea of him as an outsider, a maverick — in some sense an American everyman. But Mr. McCain, who has been in Washington for more than a quarter of a century, was always embedded with the forces on the side of the corporate aristocracy.

He didn’t just stumble into the toxic relationships that got him into trouble with the Keating Five. And there was a reason for the closeness of his bond with Phil Gramm.

The populists’ garb hangs awkwardly on the frame of John McCain. Everyman he ain’t.

That would be FOXNews..

A Little-Remembered Blast From The Past

McCain's record on Iraq: eager to attack

...In January 2002, while touring the flight bridge of an aircraft carrier on the Arabian Sea, McCain shouted: "Next up: Baghdad!"

He fleshed out his views in a speech at a NATO security policy conference in Munich on Feb. 2, 2002.

"Terrorist training camps exist on Iraqi soil, and Iraqi officials are known to have had a number of contacts with al-Qaida. These were probably not courtesy calls," he said. "Americans have internalized the mantra that Afghanistan represents only the first front in our global war on terror. The next front is apparent, and we should not shrink from acknowledging it. A terrorist resides in Baghdad, with the resources of an entire state at his disposal, flush with cash from illicit oil revenues and proud of a decade-long record of defying the international community's demands that he come clean on his programs to develop weapons of mass destruction."...

Who came to his (joe LIEbermans) rescue?
Sen. Barak Obama, with a ringing endorsement.

"I know that some in the party have differences with Joe," Senator Obama said, all but silencing the crowd. "I'm going to go ahead and say it. It's the elephant in the room. And Joe and I don't agree on everything. But what I know is, Joe Lieberman's a man with a good heart, with a keen intellect, who cares about the working families of America."

Then, with applause beginning to build, he finished the thought: "I am absolutely certain that Connecticut's going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the United States Senate." That time, people cheered loudly.

Palin Owes Some Good People An Apology

Jim Wallis

Then Wednesday night I heard Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin say that her experience as "a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." The convention crowd in St. Paul thought that was very funny. But it wasn't. It was actually quite insulting to the army of community organizers who work in the most challenging places across the country and have such a tremendous impact on the everyday lives of millions of people. I guess Palin and her fellow Republican delegates don't know much about that. The "actual responsibilities" of community organizers literally provide the practical support, collective strength, and hope for a better future that low-income families need to survive,

(feat. Amon Tobin)

i think you're old enough to know better
but i'm old enough to remember
(don't even trip........)
i won't use that stupid boy forever
(cross your heart and hope to die)

don't even trip,
don't get too big for your britches
(don't even trip........)
all these bones been jumping out of your closet
(you're not in your closet yet)
so blasé,
don't turn and look the other way
(you wanna be a star)
you want to be a star
you're oh so near, yet oh so far

(don't even trip........)

you'll be back inside before the winter
on that long, long trip before december
(don't even trip........)
don't be throwing stones at the window
(lock in peace and close your house?)

don't even trip,
don't get too big for your britches
(don't even trip........)
all these bones been jumping out of your closet
(you're not in your closet yet)
so blasé,
don't turn and look the other way
(you've gotta have it all)
you've got to have it all
you're oh so near, yet oh so far

And i know that arseholes grow on trees but i'm here to trim the leaves
and i'm afraid
daddy you're still my friend
and you're just a piece of shit
but i can over-look it today
'cause you're still my friend

(don't even trip........)

drop that gun, you aren't my fuckn hero
(don't even trip........)
you think its cool to be a fuckn zero
i can't believe i called you my amigo
(take a deep breath you'll be fine)

speek up now
and one of you is a hundred loud?
(when you preach you come off?)
when you preach,
they'll join you on the roofs and streets
(like crystal clear)
crystal clear,
i'm hanging like a chandelier
(watching over you)
watching over you,
i'll move you from a song to tears

and i know that arseholes grow on trees
but i'm going to trim the leaves
and i can say
daddy you're still my friend
and you're still a piece of shit but i can over-look it today

and you're still a piece of shit but i can look the other way
'cause you're still my friend
(don't even trip........)

It's not my problem..

I vote by the rules I perceive - not by party...

Especially when some people can't see that both parties that

we are allowed to vote for by the MSM are POONED by the same people...

Talk to me when Obama makes Unicorn's and Rainbow's mainstream...

Didja ever think maybe you live in a corral built just for you...?

the boxer more like.

I am just a poor boy and my storys seldom told
Ive squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still the man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm

When I left my home and my family, I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, runnin scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters, where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Li la li...

Asking only workmans wages, I come lookin for a job, but I get no offers
Just a comeon from the whores on 7th avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Now the years are rolling by me, they are rockin even me
I am older than I once was, and younger than Ill be, thats not unusual
No it isnt strange, after changes upon changes, we are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same

Li la li...

And Im laying out my winter clothes, wishing I was gone, goin home
Where the new york city winters arent bleedin me, leadin me to go home

In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes he still remains

Li la li...

I have no problem chewing or biting or eating crow

if Obama is all you hope - in fact I hope too..I'm just not spending my vote on that hope...OK? Because HOPE is not a new word in politics...

OK..guilt sets in..I'd better go back to work

..

especially this line:

"All lies and jest, still the man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm"

jamesbennet thanks!

for the Amtrak info, i didn't know! looks good - will look into it, rates and schedules

Hey, I don't care how you vote.

Nor do I criticized your unsuccessful attempts to live on an island. I don't know anyone who wants unicorns.

Re: New Orleans/That train route is so slow

the hookers can saunter on and off as the train slowly moves down the track away from the station - is the New Orleans Train Station still there? Out on the Louisiana marshes, one used to see large appliances, is it worse or better after the storms. Miles of stacked container and tank cars loaded trains have the right away over passenger travel. Haven't been back since 2001. Train car graffit is amazing. Little boats

seder chest et tu?

what can i say, i don't know what to say, it certainly not something obama should be proud of - well then, i am glad he's now faced with a smearing lieberman who belittles him from the rnc podium, hopefully it will be a lesson? will he learn from this experience? we can only hope....

unicorns?

i'd like a breeding pair myself.

eya Mire!

fall is gorguss in BC!

you can hang out with us and we have superb coffee!

OK then..I vote how I choose..

I do not vote out of fear of WHAT MIGHT BE...I vote for who best ..

You know what...How many fucking times do I have to write that? If you are voting by party and not by who most represents you - then you are not following the rules as I understand them...

You can write it as many

fucking times as you want. I'm not the one criticizing you. Voting for a strategy that is sure to fail is voting for failure in my book. There are no "rules" about how to decide Alice. What the hell are you talking about?

I know you want us all to be "free" to live in some fantasy. But I don't live in your fantasy. I have however, seen what happens when enough people follow that fantasy and it is always corrupted. Look up Leon Trotsky.

The City of New Orleans

A song about a train performed by:
Willie Nelson (MP3 - 6.8MB)
Johnny Cash (MP3 - 6.7MB)

The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel (MP3 - 4.8MB)

I am trying to truly figure out what Alice is saying

It basically comes down to cynicism and nihlism. I think she is saying that both parties are a waste of time even though Obama is better than McCain, since they are both less than right, fuck it. "I am voting for who I truly believe in."

It doesnt matter that McCain will make this country worse because the system is fucked up. So kinda if he fucks it up even more, there is no guilt for her vote because we are getting what we deserve because we have a fucked up system that we keep participating in.

Practical considerations only prolong the corruption.

So I think she will be guilt free if McCain wins. It well be our fault for voting for the lesser of two evils and not voting our conscience.
If I were to vote my conscience, I would write in Kucinich.

Alice does this come close to what you believe...I really want to understand your position.

Following the rules... let's

Following the rules...

let's see...you're driving the speed limit on the interstate and you see there's an accident blocking both lanes about a 100 feet ahead.

let's see...the choice is to stop ASP or continue traveling at 65 MPH?
