School Raps McCain For Using

School Raps McCain For Using Image As Speech Backdrop Without Permission
By Kate Klonick - September 5, 2008, 4:32PM
Okay, the McCain-Walter Reed Middle School backdrop debacle is getting weirder by the second. Now the principal of the school is hammering McCain for using footage of the school during his convention speech without seeking the school's permission.

Here's the statement from Donna Tobin, the principal...

"It has been brought to the school's attention that a picture of the front of our school, Walter Reed Middle School, was used as a backdrop at the Republican National Convention. Permission to use the front of our school for the Republican National Convention was not given by our school nor is the use of our school's picture an endorsement of any political party or view."
One other interesting development: The California Democratic Party is actually holding a press conference in front of the school within minutes, where Dems will hit McCain for not knowing the difference between the school and Walter Reed Medical Center, which is believed to be the backdrop the McCain campaign really wanted.

Though multiple news organizations are asking for clarification, the McCain campaign is still refusing to comment on questions about whether it had hoped to use the medical center as a backdrop and accidentally used the school instead. Hard to blame them...

Cable news covered more of

Cable news covered more of RNC’s peak hour programming than DNC’s.
Media Matters reports:

During their September 2 and September 3 coverage of the Republican National Convention, MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News each dedicated more on-air time — significantly more in most cases — to speeches and other official Republican convention programming during the most-watched portions of their coverage than each channel dedicated to official convention programming during the same times on comparable nights of the Democratic National Convention one week earlier.

820 and 427 and 152

820 is the number of laws Obama sponsored in the Illinois State Senate. You can see his legislative record here. In fact, he's created something of a backlog: some of the bills he introduced are still being debated in Springfield. Three of them, including S. 3558 ("A bill to provide for enhanced food-borne illness surveillance and food safety capacity") were moved upon just last week.

427 is the current count of the number of bills Obama has co-sponsored in the U.S. Senate.

And the final number, 152, is the most recent tally of the number of bills that Senator Obama has authored.

Let's look at that quote from Palin again, this time with wiggle words highlighted:

"...this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or even a reform, not even in the state senate." (Cheers, applause.)

Actually, it's not hard to find bills by Obama that qualify both as major, and as reforms. As Andrew Sullivan points out:

...it seems extremely weird that she should believe that Obama's record is a total zero.

At her first press conference, why not ask her why she said that Obama has never passed a single reform, when he passed the 2007 Ethics Reform, described by many as the most sweeping package of its kind since Watergate. Of course, she doesn't know. She was given this speech. But she should be asked to respond to the question of why she said something patently untrue to the entire country.

The kid has a batting record. Obama's record of turning words into action isn't zero. It's 820, and 427, and 152.

Something the GOP was actually authorized to use

at their convention.
McCain Winning Coveted "Stock Photos" Demographic?

This was sent in by a reader: apparently, the Republicans couldn't find very many African American supporters to show on the Big Screen Of Triumph, when introducing McCain (see 6:45, 7:02)... so they simply put up stock photos of black people. You know, riding bicycles and appreciating their moms and stuff. Both these images appeared in McCain's introduction, but you can also buy them for a buck or two from iStockphoto.com

Republicans are the party of failure. Palin's failing more than experience and judgement to most Americans. I'm also not here to school you. Figure it out yourself. But your comment does make you look stupid.

Democrats have a serious set of candidates, not a tart from the meth capitol of Alaska that nearly faced getting thrown out for putting her tiny town in $22,000,000 debt. I hope she in fact did not cheat on her hard working husband. That would certainly put all of her kids happiness at risk.

So many Palin controversies

So little time

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%
. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%.
This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration
weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it
with indebtedness of over $22 million.

Is it any wonder?

Why is she hiding back in Alaska?

textbook example of an 'extinction burst'.

In operant conditioning, extinction is the withholding of reinforcement for a previously reinforced behavior which decreases the future probability of that behavior. For example, a child who climbs under his desk, a response which has been reinforced by attention, is subsequently ignored until the attention-seeking behavior no longer occurs. In his autobiography, B. F. Skinner noted how he accidentally discovered the extinction of an operant response due to the malfunction of his laboratory equipment.

My first extinction curve showed up by accident. A rat was pressing the lever in an experiment on satiation when the pellet dispenser jammed. I was not there at the time, and when I returned I found a beautiful curve. The rat had gone on pressing although no pellets were received.... The change was more orderly than the extinction of a salivary reflex in Pavlov’s setting, and I was terribly excited. It was a Friday afternoon and there was no one in the laboratory who I could tell. All that weekend I crossed streets with particular care and avoided all unnecessary risks to protect my discovery from loss through my accidental death.[1]
When the extinction of a response has occurred, the discriminative stimulus is then known as an extinction stimulus (SΔ or s delta). When an S delta is present, the reinforcing consequence which characteristically follows a behavior does not occur. This is the opposite of a discriminative stimulus which is a signal that reinforcement will occur. For instance, in an operant chamber, if food pellets are only delivered when a response is emitted in the presence of a green light, the green light is a discriminative stimulus. If when a red light is present food will not be delivered, then the red light is an extinction stimulus. (food here is used as an example of a reinforcer).

[this is 'normal' extinction...

extinction Burst:

While extinction, when implemented consistently over time, results in the eventual decrease of the undesired behavior, in the near-term the subject might exhibit what is called an extinction burst. An extinction burst will often occur when the extinction procedure has just begun. This consists of a sudden and temporary increase in the response's frequency, followed by the eventual decline and extinction of the behavior targeted for elimination.

Take, as an example, a pigeon that has been reinforced to peck an electronic button. During its training history, every time the pigeon pecked the button, it will have received a small amount of bird seed as a reinforcer. So, whenever the bird is hungry, it will peck the button to receive food. However, if the button were to be turned off, the hungry pigeon will first try pecking the button just as it has in the past. When no food is forthcoming, the bird will likely try again... and again, and again. After a period of frantic activity, in which their pecking behavior yields no result, the pigeon's pecking will decrease in frequency.

The evolutionary advantage of this extinction burst is clear. In a natural environment, an animal that persists in a learned behavior, despite not resulting in immediate reinforcement, might still have a chance of producing reinforcing consequences if they try again. This animal would be at an advantage over another animal that gives up too easily.

The change you deserve

bear with me for one more moment...

language-able organisms, when a particular behavior is 'under extinction' the ability to 'think' and 'believe' will maintain the behavior at ever increasing rates (and variability)... in other words, people will keep on emitting the behavior much longer and with even greater intensity until it ceases, usually suddenly.

Interestingly, if the unwanted behavior is ventured on a subsequent occasion, it will often begin at the higher rate/intensity at the point of (prior) extinction, and any reinforcement delivered at that point will increase the liklihood of the continued emmission of the behavior, at the higher rate/intensity.

This is the scientific rationale for S.P.I.T.

Ugh...

Michael Moore And The GOP

Michael Moore asks the press to lay off Palin:

But before everyone gets all smug and self-righteous about the Palin selection, remember where you live. You live in a nation of gun owners and hunters. You live in a country where one out of three girls get pregnant before they are 20. You live in a nation of C students. Knocking Bush for being a C student only endeared him to the nation of C students. Knock Palin for having kids, for having a kid who's having a baby, for anything that is part of her normalness -- a normalness that looks very familiar to so many millions of Americans -- well, you do this at your own peril. Assuming she's still on the ticket two weeks from now, she will be a much tougher opponent than anyone expects.
Dreher agrees with Moore. So does the Republican establishment. I'm not smug or self-righteous about this. I'm alarmed by what Charles Krauthammer has called

the paucity of any Palin record or expressed conviction on the major issues of our time.
Maybe we're being picky, but you kinda want to know those kinds of things when someone could be president of the United States next January. Does the fact that we know nothing about her foreign policy views not worry anyone?

We conservatives have had a good time ridiculing the Obama phenomenon, especially its messianic feel -- the willingness of its adherents to pour so much hope and belief into such an empty, or at least incomplete, vessel -- and its elevation of "narrative" over substance.

It turns out that we were dying to have basically the same experience.

The discipline we lack-

GOP orchestrated delegates' comments on Palin

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Alaska delegates to the Republican National Convention got a strong message this week from Republican officials as the media swarm kept bugging them about Gov. Sarah Palin: "STAY POSITIVE when talking with reporters."

Despite the fact that the Republicans met in Minnesota to nominate John McCain for president, there was more discipline than straight talk at their convention. Day after day, it was hard to find anyone who wasn't offering the same lines, and as delegates and officials headed home Friday, they were confident that they could answer any question about Palin or anything else quickly and cogently.

The message effort proceeded on several fronts. Party officials participated in daily conference calls with top Republicans and discussed the "line of the day," usually how to discuss energy, McCain's record, the economy or national security. Surrogates then talked to the news media and delegate meetings.

On the convention floor, the national party on Monday gave all delegates blue pocket cards listing party principles, with quick responses to constituent and media questions.

For instance, should anyone ask about the economy or terrorism, they could repeat lines such as: "We support our heroes and their mission to create an enduring peace, based on freedom and the will to defend it."

Kremlin-watchers warn of direct U.S.-Russia clash
By Tom Lasseter | McClatchy Newspapers

MOSCOW_ In the aftermath of last month's war between Russia and U.S.-backed Georgia, Kremlin-watchers in Moscow are worried that Russia and America are closer to direct confrontation than at any point since the end of the Cold War.

The rhetoric coming from the Bush administration — and presidential hopeful John McCain — suggests that tensions are still on the rise.

During the Cold War, "the sides were very careful of each other. They were careful not to come too close," said Alexander Pikayev, a prominent military analyst in Moscow who works for a government-funded research center. "The risk of direct military clashes is (now) much higher. . . . This situation is much riskier than the Cold War."

Russian analysts say there are three possible flash points, all centered on or around the Black Sea, once almost lakefront property for the Soviet empire. The sea borders three NATO members — Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania — and two applicants, Georgia and Ukraine. If the two applicants join the alliance, Russia's Black Sea coastline would be surrounded by NATO.

"Now it looks like there is a certain red line that exists in the heads of Russian leadership and they are willing to do anything to stop it from being crossed," said Nikolai Petrov, a Moscow scholar in residence with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "And this red line is Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO."

Wow

For someone who is married to a Fox News person, Campbell Brown was arguing with Bay Buchanen about Sarah Palin.

Bay accused her of picking on Palin and Campbell said that she was running for VP of the US and the media had every right to find out everything they can about her.

Campbell reported on the Jet Palin supposedly sold on Ebay, that McCain said she made a profit. She didn't sell it on Ebay and she sold it at a loss.

These two women were really going at it.

Bomb targets Chalabi in Iraq
Posted: 05:05 PM ET
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — A suicide car bomb targeting Shiite politician Ahmed Chalabi killed two people and injured at least 17 Friday in western Baghdad, Iraq’s Interior Ministry said.

The Interior Ministry said the car bombing happened near Chalabi’s home in Baghdad’s al-Mansour district. Chalabi escaped unharmed, it said.

At least one of the people killed was a civilian and authorities were uncertain Friday whether the other fatality was a civilian or a member of Chalabi’s security detail.

Earlier, Defense Ministry adviser Abdul Amir Hassan was shot dead when he was driving near his home in east Baghdad. Guns equipped with silencers were used in that attack.

Anarchists expose

Anarchists expose infiltrators
An anarchist recognized a would-be infiltrator from the local Sheriff's office at a demonstration in a St. Paul park yesterday, the Minnesota Pioneer Press confirms. The anarchist thought a black-clad man at the demo looked familiar.

The mole was asked to leave. He got into an unmarked sedan.

When the anarchist checked the photographs she recognized the familiar-looking guy as one of the officers who had raided the Convergence Space on Smith Ave. the previous week.

The Pioneer Press traced the license plate of the unmarked sedan to the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.

Court documents also show that the police relied heavily, in some cases exclusively on the testimony of paid informants to lay conspiracy charges against certain defendants.

Keep these facts in mind when assessing claims that anarchists are responsible for various misdeeds at protests. If the authorities can infiltrate, they can also instigate.

Dear Uptight Seattleite,

Dear Uptight Seattleite,

http://www.seattleweekly.com/2008-09-03/diversions/ask-an-uptight-seattl...

Having arrived here from a country where people know how to form orderly lines, I find it hard to navigate the blob of people that forms at the door of a bus here. There can be as many as three or four streams feeding this churning mob as it lurches inefficiently onto the bus. A by-product of your city's informality is the tension that arises in situations like these that have no clear rules. No one knows if it's their turn to board or the other fellow's. Or am I missing the secret rules at work here?

Shuffling in the Blob

Dear Shuffling,

The underappreciated side of social tension is the social part. For a bit of friction as we slide haltingly past each other means that we are at least aware of one another's presence. You can think of it as a spice, this prickly awareness that hangs in the air above a crowd boarding a bus. A spice that promotes wakefulness. That magically transmits knowledge at the last possible moment, enabling us either to surge decisively forward or give way to the Windows Server 2003 sweatshirt approaching from the opposite direction. There's a subtle, high-strung grace to these motions. We are in our own humble way like a flock of birds turning as a single body this way and that in the high air of our evening commute.

But the answer to your question is yes, there are rules. As the bus approaches, people are free to jockey for position according to where they think it will stop. But once the bus does come to a stop, everyone is supposed to stick with whatever stream of traffic they end up in. Some may illegally move forward along the outside of the blob, but we know how to deal with them: silent looks of indignation. Come to think of it, though, we birds of a feather should probably feel grateful for these violations. For they make us feel our secret airborne communion all the more keenly.

CNN & MSNBC call McCain's bluff

The media has come a long way recently and I'm glad to to see that times are changing. Hats off to at least some media outlets to giving it right back to McCain.
“It’s a time-honored marketing ploy and, every time they bash the media, it means they’re not talking about a vision or a plan,” CNN president Jon Klein said. “But the best antidote to cynical marketing is solid reporting.”

CNN had a dustup with the McCain campaign earlier this week after Campbell Brown’s persistent questioning of McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds on Palin’s foreign-policy experience as governor of Alaska prompted the campaign to cancel McCain’s scheduled appearance on Larry King Live. (Bounds and CNN have since patched thing up.)

“America has been presented with a total unknown who might be a heartbeat away from the presidency,” Klein said of Palin, “and Americans have every right to expect as much information as possible about this person so that they can make an informed choice. Certainly our critics are in favor of Americans making an informed choice, aren’t they?”

Harassing Gas

Harassing Gas

http://www.seattleweekly.com/2008-09-03/news/harassing-gas/

A Green Party gubernatorial candidate rings a biodiesel merchant’s bell, and gets accused of criminal behavior for it.

Last fall, Propel Biofuels opened its first Seattle fueling station at Bernie's Automotive in Ballard. The event drew the usual suspects: Propel CEO Rob Elam, Sen. Maria Cantwell, a canola farmer from eastern Washington, and Duff Badgley, head of One Earth, a locally-based group dedicated to fighting climate change. At the opening, Badgley, who thinks biofuel isn't sustainable unless it's made from recycled vegetable oil, let it be known he was highly suspicious of what constituted the biodiesel coursing through Propel's bright green pump.

In the months that followed, Badgley—who until his primary loss was a Green Party candidate for governor—began showing up every few weeks at the Ballard Propel station with other members of One Earth and a banner reading "Biofuel = Crimes Against Humanity." But they didn't stop there: Elam says that One Earth protesters have been approaching customers—particularly women—and harassing them while they fill up, and that this practice has spread to another recently-opened station on West Mercer Street. Here, the One Earthers hand out leaflets charging biofuels with being a "scourge on humankind," and allegedly take photos of customers and their license plates.

"Crimes against humanity, really?" says Elam. "In all likelihood, this is the most sustainable and local fuel that's been available. This intense hostility is against something that doesn't exist...Where it crosses the line is when he starts intimidating customers." (In actuality, it's pretty tough to find a Propel customer to harass these days. Recent hour-long visits to Propel's South Lake Union and Ballard stations yielded just one customer in toto: Heather Andersen, who insists protesters won't scare her away.)

Like his protests, Badgley's beef with biodiesel has evolved. Initially he was concerned about only biodiesel made with palm oil—which some feel contributes to the destruction of rain forests—and questioned whether one of Propel's sources, Imperium Renewables of Grays Harbor, was importing its oil from Malaysia. Now Badgley's against all "crop-based" biodiesel, meaning soy, canola, and pretty much anything not made from recycled oil.

Badgley argues that soy and canola seed, although grown in North America, contribute to rain forest destruction because the growing demand for biodiesel encourages farmers to plant in more tropical locations. Badgley also claims soy and canola grown for fuel are displacing acreage farmed for food, and therefore contributing to rising prices and hunger worldwide. Meanwhile, Elam says Propel, which has six stations in Washington and plans to expand into Oregon and California, gets its fuel from canola seed grown in Washington and Canada.
(...)"

"It's unfortunate," she says. "Propel brought all of this positive momentum and built a beautiful station [in South Lake Union]. I feel [One Earth's behavior is] so misplaced. How come petroleum gets a free pass and people just tear apart biofuels?"

This time, though, McCain is collaborating with his captors. By picking Palin he knowingly guided his campaign well over hostile territory and then aimed its nose straight down. Once taken hostage, he refused to speak his captors’ propaganda, but he allowed everyone else to shout it to the rafters. He gambled, all right, but it was in the direction of orthodoxy—for Palin is a creature and an icon of the Republicans’ evangelical base.

No one would hold against him the fact that he broke, as he said last night, under North Vietnamese torture. His capitulation to the latest group of hard-liners to take him prisoner is a lot harder to justify. But his speech already hinted at the penitent President McCain would be if his current ordeal at the hands of his party’s base takes him to the White House.

A Visibly Upset Keith

A Visibly Upset Keith Olbermann Castigates RNC 9/11 “Tribute” Video
By: Nicole Belle @ 1:30 PM - PDT

There’s nothing like some exploitive and fact free propaganda to bring Republicans together in mindless cheering against a phantom and revisionist enemy. On Thursday’s final night of the Republican National Convention, the RNC broadcast what was billed as a tribute to 9/11 victims, but by tying in the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis and the Iraq invasion and occupation, resembled more a propaganda news reel that exploited horribly the memories of the victims and heroes of 9/11. Jeffrey Feldman:

No doubt, showing a 9/11 video at a political convention was emotional exploitation. But it was also something much worse: it was blatant historical revisionism. It was a cynical attempt to claim attacks on Americans–1979 and 2001–were carried out by the same ‘enemy.’

What Olbermann should have apologized for was MSNBC accidental transformation of their network into a mechanism of the most cynical kind of Orwellian propaganda.

John McCain did not make the link between 9/11 and Iran in his RNC speech, but we can be certain that the video ‘tribute’ is a sign of what is to come on the campaign trail between now and November.

The media’s responsibility from this point forward is clear: either they can sit back and let McCain’s historical revisionism stand or they can move quickly to debunk it.

Either way, it seems apparent that major broadcast outlets need to take a more proactive role in pre-screening for blatant historical inaccuracies any video a political party plans to show during a national broadcast–or at least preparing to immediately debunk politically motivated inaccuracies.

So Media–you lazy ass, dismissive-of-blogs-who-do-your-job-better-than-you, monolith of bias? The onus is on you to set the record straight.

As for Olbermann, he promises a Special Comment next week on this subject.

Sarah Palin

is a criminal Caribbo Fucker.

What gets me about the

What gets me about the trolls insisting that we libs are `scared of Palin' is they are right.

not for the reasons they think, that she's a `can-do', maverick reforming, woman who brings leadership experience to the ticket.

We all know this is bullshit. Everything except for the woman part, anyway.

The reason she frightens us is she's an ideologue, extreme-right wing, evangelical -christian who sees the War on Terror as God's will and believes any who oppose our government's war are evil.

As if McCain's simplistic and archaic cold war mentality wasn't bad enough, the person who would be commander in chief in case of the elderly McCain's death or protracted illness.

Any person who truly believes a war is a "mission from God" would be not negotiate, certainly never in (pardon the pun) `good faith.' and would be proud to lead us to Armageddon, God's will or not.

And that is truly something to fear. Not just us democrats, but everyone in the world.

Jeffrey Toobin: I’m not

Jeffrey Toobin: I’m not gonna lie, McCain was “shockingly bad”
By: SilentPatriot @ 11:15 AM - PDT

think Jeff and I are on the same page here.

“I thought it was the worst speech by a nominee that I’ve heard since Jimmy Carter in 1980. I thought it was disorganized, I thought it was it was themeless, I thought it was very, very boring […] I personally cannot remember a single policy proposal that he made because they had nothing connecting them. I found it shockingly bad.”

Not only was the speech poorly delivered and mind-numbingly boring, it was without substance. Obama’s speech was a generational call to arms to disaffected Americans who are sick and tired of the paralyzing partisanship and unacceptable status quo. Mccain’s was boilerplate

While he tried his damndest tonight to distance himself from the past eight years, at the end of the day, John McCain has voted with George W. Bush more than 90% of the time. Hell, we have him on tape bragging about it.

It remains to be seen if the GOP can successfully convince a majority of Americans that John McCain is not responsible for the Bush/McCain legacy.

On Cindy McCain's outfits at the Red Meat for Dopes convention...

A lot has been said about her 3 hundred thousand dollar outfit.

Considering she looked like a million bucks, she's actually quite thrifty!

BTW: the $300,000 outfit was only one night. I imagine the outfits she sure bought for the other 3 nights (one night was canceled, I wonder if she could return that dress she didn't wear?) cost about that much as well.

"So sambo beat the bitch?" Sarah Palin

Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”

by Charley James –

“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.
Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.
Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive.

Obama says Pakistan misusing US aid for war against India

WASHINGTON: Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has said Pakistan is misusing US aid given for the war on terror to prepare for war against India.

In an interview to Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, Obama bluntly articulated what has been said discreetly in Bush administration audits: US aid worth billions to Pakistan, ostensibly meant for the war on terror, has been used by Islamabad's military rulers to tone up for a possible confrontation against India on its eastern front.

''We are providing them military aid without having enough strings attached. So they're using the military aid that we use -- they're not, to Pakistan, they're preparing for a war against India,'' Obama told O'Reilly, the conservative TV host.

Obama had taken a hard line against Pakistani's descent into fundamentalism, a position that is in part attributed to hisfamiliarity with the country. He visited there as a student during the Zia-ul Haq years – thanks to Pakistani classmates in American -- when Pakistan began its move towards ardent Islamisation. His mother, a liberal who worked for an NGO, lived in Pakistan for five years to monitor aided projects.

Balls found inside 'rattling' dog

Balls found inside 'rattling' dog

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7599899.s...

A dog had to have 13 golf balls removed from its stomach after eating them on walks around a Fife course.

Owner Chris Morrison had been taking five-year-old black labrador Oscar round the Pitreavie golf course in Dunfermline for several months.

He took Oscar to the vet after noticing a rattling sound coming from his pet's stomach.

They then discovered that 13 balls - each weighing 45 grams - were lodged in his stomach.

Mr Morrison, a planning administrator, said one of the balls had been in his stomach so long that it had turned black and was decomposing.

He said: "He finds golf balls like truffles. We're not sure how long exactly this happened over, but it must have been a fair period - several months at least.

"I felt his stomach and heard them rattling around.

"He normally brings a few home, but I had no idea he had eaten so many.

"The vet hadn't seen anything like it, it was bizarre.

"He is a black lab so he is a fair size, but to swallow 13 is quite amazing."

The balls were removed two weeks ago in a successful hour-long operation.

Bag full

Oscar is now on the road to making a full recovery on a special post-operation diet of watered-down food.

He also has to wear a muzzle while out and about.

Mr Morrison added: "He does get a bit frustrated now and again."

Bob Hesketh, 40, principal vet at Vetrica in Rosyth, said he had never seen anything like it.

He said: "It was like a magic trick. I opened him up and felt what I thought was two or three golf balls.

"But they just kept coming until we had a bag full.

"I think they must have been in there for several months, one was all black and the shell was swollen."

Didn't it seem out of synch...

The rambling disconnected speech McCain gave and the near Obama loud cheering from the crowd. I've always suspected but now truly believe the Republicans thrive on the effect and could care less about substance. McCain could have read the instructions for installing a garage door opener and they would have cheered just as loud because they have to be louder than the DNC. It's like that White Stripes Effect and Cause song.

A big heaping number of Americans watched John McCain's acceptance speech last night, hoping to get just one last glimpse of Sarah Palin's stems before she's extradited to face charges in her home country of Alaska (which happens to be very close to Russia. Hmmm...) While a lot of people tuned in, the real question is how long they stayed awake during the 40+ minute change-a-thon before Uncle John sent them off to dream about reform.

We consulted with a sleep therapist (okay, he's our intern), and it turns out you can tell a lot about a person's character based on when John McCain's acceptance speech put them to sleep. Check our annotated speech transcript below and you might just learn a little something about yourself...

A Life In The Times

As a writer and artist, I am much influenced by things that most normal people would have me committed for. My Irish grandparents instilled in me a love for the wee folk of the forest, and elves and fairies are much a part of my life. As a student of Seth, the entity channeled through Jane Roberts, I am open to all probable universes, and all parallel worlds.

I spent most of the summer in Anderson Indiana with my son and his wife, and found myself in a magical place. At night, long after the city slept, I sat in their back yard in the dark, trusty glass at hand, and my mind and body open to all that is. I watched the moon and planets rise from the east, transversing the night skies until the wolf hours of the morning. My mother, bless her ancient old soul, always said I had way too much imagination for one person, and maybe she was right about that. I, however, do not believe that is so, mainly because of life experiences I have had.

I digress - while sitting there in the dark one evening, I had an experience that I really prefer not to share, but let me say it was one of beauty and wonder. Out of that experience came the image of the darling little elven girl you see here. I have carried her with me in mind's eye for quite some time now, and have been driven to reproduce her. You see the results here. It is only a beginning. She has no name - at least not yet, anyway. I know she has a purpose for being revealed to me. My DIL Sara is pregnant, approaching third trimester. I like to think that this lovely little lady was revealed to me as the unborn child's protector in ways I cannot fathom. This new little granddaughter will be a special person to me, and she needs a special protector for other reasons I don't wish to reveal. Perhaps, in an old man's fancy, this lovely elven girl was revealed to me to let me know that things will be okay. Stranger things have happened in my life...

Peace,

Charlie~

Palin Approval Runs Along Partisan Lines

About half of the public had a favorable first impression of vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, and that half consists primarily of Republicans, a new ABC News poll finds. This not-so-shocking divide mirrors the numbers on Joe Biden: his candidacy makes 22% of people more likely to support the Obama ticket and 10% less likely.

McCain's choice inspired increased confidence in 80% of Republicans and 44% of independents, while 59% of Democrats report less confidence in the senator's ability to make important decisions. Men are more confident than women (46% to 39%) that Palin has enough experience to be president, with a wider gap on the question of whether the media have treated her fairly—46% of women say yes, to 55% of men.
