so, does second life only work when you payz money to buy land and get stuff?
i tried it last year when the progressive convention was there (kos?) and played with it a few more times, but i just don't get it.

And I learned their scripting language, bought land, and made a couple of friends. The environment is flaky and would crash all the time. Not real expensive but it's like losing money to gamble.
hey folks good morning
dry and cozy and safe up here but worried sick about what might be going down down there
watching it on tv and on the computer, not the same as being there while it's happening....so i've been busy on the phone, talking to people, trying not to think about it and not really succeeding, other than when the kids demand attention with their preoccupations, being it need for a diaper change or reading a book or helping pick out a dress for the big event today the montessori kindergarten open house = such a big deal with louisa, she's very excited about it.....
not really much time leftover for me to worry about whether palin was the mother or the grandmother (eyeroll)
worrying about the few stragglers who didn't leave nola, i think there might be a few people i know in that group.... just very anxious until landfall happens and we get word of how high the surge, and where and the state of the levees....while i try to carry on a normal life here.....
the weather is gorgeous, sunny with a hint of fall in the air, yesterday at the farmer's market, the most amazing plaze in this small town, huge farmer's market, i stared and stared at the colors, flowers awsome colors, the best pizza produced on a stone wood oven on wheels, pottery and crafts, cuban food, mabrobiotic food, biological pig meat, cheese and somozas and falafels and coffee and lemonade stands but the pizza that came out that small mobile wood oven was the best i had in the usa in my thirty years in this country, that's something.....

Now that Sam brings us proof
of Sarah's pregnancy, I'm even more ticked off.
I understand that she loves her baby. But for every drop of love in her blood for him, she must equally hate Texas.
Why did She risk her son further to flee Texas and give birth to Trig in a tiny hospital in Alaska that had no preemie or downs care unit? I live in Texas. It's not THAT bad.
We have more prenatal care units in Austin than all of Alaska. How does she feel about Mississippi or South Carolina? Does she feel the same way too? Is she running to be the VP of America or Alaska?

...
Conceived by America's labor unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labor unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise.
...
The American Railway Union, led by a young Eugene V. Debs, came to the cause of the striking workers, and railroad workers across the nation boycotted trains carrying Pullman cars. Rioting, pillaging, and burning of railroad cars soon ensued; mobs of non-union workers joined in.
The strike instantly became a national issue. President Grover Cleveland, faced with nervous railroad executives and interrupted mail trains, declared the strike a federal crime and deployed 12,000 troops to break the strike. Violence erupted, and two men were killed when U.S. deputy marshals fired on protesters in Kensington, near Chicago, but the strike was doomed.
On August 3, 1894, the strike was declared over. Debs went to prison, his ARU was disbanded, and Pullman employees henceforth signed a pledge that they would never again unionize. Aside from the already existing American Federation of Labor and the various railroad brotherhoods, industrial workers' unions were effectively stamped out and remained so until the Great Depression.
It was not the last time Debs would find himself behind bars, either. Campaigning from his jail cell, Debs would later win almost a million votes for the Socialist ticket in the 1920 presidential race.

GOP scales back tomorrow’s
GOP scales back tomorrow’s convention plans.
Today, GOP officials “announced they would hold only essential party business required under its rules on Monday” at their convention in Minnesota. Party officials “have decided that Monday’s session will open at 3 p.m. Central time and probably end at 5 to 5:30 p.m. and will be limited to official business like adopting the platform and electing convention officers.” The New York Times reports on what the media will be doing:
The major television networks are pulling some of their top talent out of Minneapolis, promising to diminish, if not upend, coverage of the convention. Katie Couric will head to the Gulf Coast to open the “CBS Evening News” from there Monday night, instead of from the convention hall as planned. Charles Gibson of ABC News and Brian Williams of NBC News are expected to do the same.
“Nightline” on ABC will also broadcast from the storm area, as will CBS News, a sign that all of the major news programs will be focused on the hurricane zone rather than the convention floor adorned with Mr. McCain’s “country first message.” That will deprive him of the crucial perk of wide television coverage of his message that usually comes with a political convention.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) has also decided not to attend, although it is unrelated to the hurricane; he needs “to deal with a continuing stalemate in Sacramento over the state budget.”

Both Biden and Palin strike me as quick witted. Biden may be able to think that he can rely on facts but Palin has legends on her side. She seems to have a constituency of "believers". I don't trust these people at all.
Her polling, even with people who are ideologically opposite of her is quite high. And you can't trust her nay-sayers either. Most of them are members with the Corrupt Bastards Club such as that Lyda Green lady.

Poll: Race Remains Dead
Poll: Race Remains Dead Even; Only A Third Of Women View Palin Favorably
By Greg Sargent - September 1, 2008, 9:30AM
Some interesting numbers in the new CNN poll:
* There was no convention bounce for Obama in this survey, which was taken Friday through Sunday; it found that the race remains dead even, with the Obama-Biden ticket at 49% versus 48% for McCain-Palin.
* And yet...Barack Obama's convention acceptance speech was a success: Sixty-four percent rated it excellent or good, higher than recent speeches. And a majority -- 51 percent -- said the convention made them more likely to pick him.
* Palin's numbers are mixed: Fifty-two percent say the Palin pick is excellent or pretty good; 46 percent rate it as fair or poor.
* But barely more than a third -- 36 percent -- of women view Sarah Palin favorably.
* And fifty percent say she's unqualified for the presidency, versus 45 percent who say she's prepared.
We'll bring you the internals when they're available.

Preemptive police raid on
Preemptive police raid on RNC protesters leads to investigation
By Andrew McLemore
The Minnesota Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild is seeking a judicial review into six activists arrested during a police raid on a group organizing protests against the Republican National Convention, The Minnesota Independent reported Sunday.
A representative of the National Lawyers Guild said the police officers are simply trying to prevent the activists from their right to protest as no charges or official complaints have been filed.
“If they have evidence of a criminal act, then they should charge them,” he says. “And if they can charge [my client, Monica Bicking] with a complaint, then we will go defend that in court. But right now they are just holding them. You can’t just hold [Bicking] to prevent her from exercising her free speech.”
The activists were arrested when the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department stormed a rented meeting place of the RNC Welcoming Committee, a self-described “anarchist/anti-authoritarian” group, in St. Paul, Minnesota Friday night, CNN reported.
As many as 30 police officers entered the building with guns drawn, temporarily detaining and photographing at least 50 people.
St. Paul Police spokesman Tom Walsh said the men acted under a search warrant, but said “the cause for the search warrant is not public at this time.”
Although no one in the building has been charged with anything, Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher issued a press release which called those in the building “criminal anarchists” and listed materials for bombs and hazardous materials police found in the building, including “assorted edged weapons”, “wrist rockets”, “large amounts of urine” and many others.
A statement from the group maintains that the meeting place “is not used for illegal actions” and that members were “watching films and sharing food” when police raided the building.
St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman defended the actions of the county sheriff’s department as necessary to keep other protesters of the Republican National Convention safe.
“We are making sure that people here to legitimately protest have the right to do that, but people engaging in criminal activity are not going to be able to do that,” Coleman said.

I'm not worried Fernando
I'm sure she can hold her own and they will milk the identity politics angle for all they're worth. I know the righties love her, but there is a strong opposition, as well and I'm all for making it stronger. WE need to be on the offensive and I like what I am seeing. Palin is being attacked from all sides and on a number of fronts. To me this shows that Progressives are fighting and that they are not sitting on their hands while the republicans shove another bad candidate their throats. And an imporperly vetted one, at that!
As far as I can tell there is plenty of talk about the issues still and criticizing McCain for his reckless choice is VERY important. If not, then we would be executing the same tired and spineless Dem plays of letting the Republicans set the dialogue and not beat up on their candidates.
Let me give you another fair criticism of Palin's choice to fly back to Alaska after her water had broken. The operative word there is "choice".
Is she saying she made a reproductive decision there?
Is she saying this is between a woman and her doctor?
This baby thing is a non-issue compared with sooo many other way more important things, we know that. But the war against the Republicans has to be fought on many fronts and this is just another one. I don't care about the daughter rumor. I care that this was a reckless decision, which is relevant on many levels and, furthermore, involving reproductive rights and that the woman in question is a fierce opponent of reproductive choice. As far as I can tell, she's against contraception, too, and I want those questions out there. If The MSM won't do it, we have to.
I'm not afraid of Karl Rove...I'm way smarter than he is.

NYT: Hillary Could Be Dems' Best Weapon Against Palin
The New York Times reports that Hillary Clinton could see an increased role on the trail in courting women voters for Barack Obama, in light of the McCain campaign's play for them in selecting Sarah Palin. Senior Clinton adviser Ann Lewis said some women voters may be giving McCain a second look now, but Hillary could reach them: "These voters see Hillary as someone who fought and rose to challenges with persistence, and who spoke in real ways to their lives."

Gustav, could park over northeast Texas (Nacogdoches)
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- As Hurricane Gustav neared Louisiana's coast Monday morning, forecasters warned the storm could stall over Louisiana and northeast Texas for several days, which would "exacerbate the threat of heavy rains and inland flooding"
I lived in Nacogdoches, Texas, very briefly in 1971 while in High School. I got in trouble for the terrible crime & audaciousness of sitting on the wrong side of the segregated bleachers while having long hair. Had to get of of town soon after. Hope that everyone gets through this storm safely, Fernando stay dry!
Alaska
The last frontier. Still in the 19th century. Much of Alaska is still a wilderness.
How can someone running a frontier state, many thinking in old ways, run the rest of the United States?
Sorry but the rest of the U.S. is far ahead of them in many ways. How would Palin know about inner city problems or industrial losses in the mid west or farming problems? Alaska dosn't have many of those problems and if they do, it's minor there.
You just cannot compare her knowledge after less than 2 years running Alaska with what Obama knows after 2 years of traveling this country from state to state, talking to people about the problems of the U.S.
And add lack of foreign policy experience to that and she's a complete zero in experience!

is that it creates a craving for more speeches. its like being given a morsel of food after having been starved for eight years.

most people don't care who governs what. The truth is that she has all of the experience that George Bush had. Texas Governors don't have power to decide anything. It's a figure head position. The Lieutenant Governor has all the power. She is a typical unqualified Republican candidate who is stupid and careless enough to take her fetus on an 8+ hr flight when it's ready to be born. We shouldn't be surprised.

VP pick Sarah Palin and the Alaska Independence Party
In spite of the rethug efforts to delete Sarah Palin's history, particularly between 2004 and 2006, we found a real gem on you tube this evening.
The clips show the connection between Sarah Palin and the Alaska Independence Party.
The AIP’s main aim is to secede from the United States, becoming either a territory or a sovereign nation. They aim to be entirely "self-sufficient" using profits from the oil and gas resources of the state.
Laura Bush and Cindy McCain
Laura Bush and Cindy McCain Added to Monday RNCC Agenda
In a conference call with reporters just now, RNC officials announced some additions to today's abbreviated convention schedule.
First Lady Laura Bush will introduce a video of the various Gulf Coast state governors (all Republicans, I believe) this afternoon and Cindy McCain will also address delegates, urging support for hurricane victims. Their portion of the program is expected to begin shortly before 6 ET.
"We will try not to overly politicize it," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis Davis said on the call, referring to the additions of Bush and McCain to today's agenda.
Today's events had already been largely canceled, except for necessary party business which has been condensed into a two-hour session this afternoon that was intended to be devoid of political speech-making and the other usual convention pomp and circumstance.
Late Update: On the call Davis suggested that no decision will be made on Tuesday's schedule until Tuesday morning once the impact of Gustav can begin to be assessed.
As the conference call wrapped up, Davis appeared to play down the chances of McCain making his acceptance speech from the Gulf Coast or anywhere else other than St. Paul.

Reporting From Where No One In His Right Mind Would Be
Storm reporters standing, or trying to stand, outdoors in a storm's wind is an asinine gimmick, in my opinion, for the following reason.
When the sustained or gusting wind speeds reach a certain point, it is not possible to look into the wind and see. It is only possible to turn one's back to the wind and see in a 180 degree arc at best.
Debris traveling at, say, 50 mph can injure or kill a person and that person will never see it coming.
On the other hand, the videotape would be on the You Tube Greatest Hits list...so to speak.
We have been watching
2 of the kitties we raised last fall for about 2 months.
There mom is a young single mom who bought a
townhome & needed to do a lot of work in it. Her
son has a zillion allergies & she needed to get mold &
other things out of the home. so to say the least
we are a little sad to see them go. Lie-la & Chino
are there names, you talk about personalities -
they have 2 of the best. I think we did a great job
on raising them. (If I do say so myself)
Some of you know about Scruffy the feral momma cat
who we had a hell of a time catching to spay her.
Well these kittens are from her second to last litter.
Anywho it is sad to see them go. :(
Obama deals gently with
Obama deals gently with Palin on equal pay issue
Obama's 1 gripe about Palin: She is McCain's pick
CHARLES BABINGTON
AP News
Sep 01, 2008 04:53 EST
Barack Obama seems to have only one problem with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican candidate for vice president: She holds the same positions as John McCain, the GOP presidential candidate who tapped her.
That may seem like a "well, duh" observation on his part, but Obama has tiptoed carefully around Palin as he tries to attract female voters. So far he has criticized her only for her ties to McCain.
On Sunday, the Democratic nominee seemed eager to blunt Palin's possible appeal to undecided women, but again, indirectly.
"We're going to make sure that equal pay for equal work is a reality in this country," Obama said at an economic forum in Toledo, Ohio, a battleground state this fall. Alluding to Palin without saying her name, he told about 200 people sitting on a sun-drenched office rooftop that she "seems like a very engaging person, nice person. But I've got to say, she's opposed, like John McCain is, to equal pay for equal work. That doesn't make much sense to me."
Obama, sharing the stage with running mate Joe Biden, has often criticized McCain's stand on a failed Senate bill called the Fair Pay Restoration Act. It essentially would have reversed a 5-4 Supreme Court decision holding that a woman had only 180 days to formally complain that she was paid less than male colleagues for the same work.
Obama, who co-sponsored the bill, says such barriers should be eased.
McCain missed the Senate vote, but said at the time: "I am all in favor of pay equity for women. But this kind of legislation ... opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems."
Some of Obama's supporters and spokesmen have been less gentle with Palin, noting that she has been governor only two years and has little if any foreign policy experience.
Obama, who attended church Sunday in Lima, Ohio, promised to bring jobs to hard-pressed sections of the state.
"We're going to invest $15 billion a year in making highly efficient cars of the future right here in Ohio, right here in America," he said to loud cheers. He promised to help create plants to produce "windmills and solar panels and biofuels, right here in Ohio, creating millions of jobs that can't be exported."
He and Biden, who jumped in a few times to help answer questions from the audience, said they would pay for their initiatives partly by ending some of the Bush administration's tax cuts for high earners.
Later Sunday, during a rally with Biden at a minor-league ballpark in Battle Creek, Mich., Obama said, "I'm tired of reading about 10,000 jobs leaving and 20,000 jobs leaving ... and no one thinking about what we can do about job creation."
The McCain campaign said Sunday that the presidential candidate and Palin support equal pay for women even though they do not think the 180-day limit for filing complaints should be changed.

Obama to Enlist Supporters
Obama to Enlist Supporters for Gustav Aid
By Jeff Zeleny
Updated TOLEDO, Ohio – Senator Barack Obama said Sunday that his campaign would mobilize its giant e-mail list of supporters – to volunteer or send contributions – as soon as the impact of Hurricane Gustav becomes known in the Gulf Coast.
“We can activate an e-mail list of a couple million people who want to give back,” Mr. Obama told reporters after leaving services at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Lima. “I think we can get tons of volunteers to travel down there if it becomes necessary.”
Mr. Obama has made no plans to travel to the Gulf Coast, saying he does not want to get in the way of emergency efforts there, but he has spoken by telephone to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.
Mr. Obama conducted telephone interviews with four TV stations and a news-talk radio station in New Orleans, aides said, amplifying the warning for any remaining residents to follow the evacuation order and leave the city.
Asked whether he believed it was appropriate for Senator John McCain to travel to the Gulf Coast, Mr. Obama said: “A big storm like this raises bipartisan concerns and I think for John to want to find out what’s going on is fine.” (President Bush and Vice President Cheney have canceled their Monday night appearances at the convention.)

Japanese prime minister resigns
The Associated Press
Published: September 1, 2008
TOKYO: Japan's chronically unpopular prime minister suddenly announced his resignation after less than a year in office Monday, throwing the world's second-largest economy into political confusion.
Yasuo Fukuda, in a hastily arranged evening news conference, said he was stepping down to avoid a "vacuum" as the deeply troubled government heads into a special session in the politically split parliament.
The 72-year-old leader made the announcement just days after unveiling $18 billion in spending to shore up the flagging economy. Growth has stalled amid anemic consumer spending and rising fuel and food prices.
"I felt that we must particularly stress the importance of the economy," Fukuda said in the nationally televised address. "If it will help even a little bit to make the parliamentary session go smoother, I decided that it might be better for someone other than me to lead."
Fukuda, whose father also served as prime minister, suffered from persistently low approval ratings as he presided over a parliament split between the ruling party and the opposition. One poll published Monday showed support at 29 percent, down sharply over the past month.

Well, I'd say it's a bit more complex than that, toni...
I see SLC as a progressive city, what with local elected officials mostly having progressive resumes. We had Rocky Anderson as mayor for two terms. The city proper loved him, everyone outside the city HATED him. We are seeing similar attitudes towards Becker, our current mayor.
Then move up to the state wide legislature and it's a different story. We are a "special" case, and that's because religion trumps politics. Everyone knows "the church" controls the legislature here.
And then nationally, yes, you see nothing but old school ideology and politics. People here call that independent. But our reps in Congress are anything but independent. They just tow the party line. We do have Matheson, but, being that he's a Blue Dog, he ain't much different from a Republican.
But it's funny sometimes, and granted it's because I live in SLC's downtown area, you even mention the name Orrin Hatch and most people start to gag.
But, literally head 20 minutes north or south and you are in a different world from SLC. Utah county is like the twilight zone to me. I can't stand going thru there.
But ultimately I can sum up the attitude of most Utahns outside SLC this way: they are two kinds of people, the ones that hate you to your face and the ones who hate you behind your back.

From NBC's Mark Murray/September 01, 2008 11:58 AM
Reuters: "The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said. 'We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,' the Palins' statement said. 'Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support,' the Palins said."

McCain says he supports
McCain says he supports minimum wage after voting against it 19 times
By Andrew McLemore
Sen. John McCain said he supports raising minimum wage on Fox News Sunday with host Chris Wallace as he admits voting against it at least 17 times.
Wallace asked McCain about his voting record on minimum wage after Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden used it to criticize the candidate during a speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Wallace eventually corrected his original question by informing McCain that the senator had actually voted 19 times to keep wages at the current level, to which McCain responded, “Well, or 29 or 49, whatever it is.”
“The point is I voted to keep taxes low,” McCain said, who went on to blame Obama for voting to raise taxes.
When Wallace pressured McCain again on the question, the senator argued that he only voted no to wage increases to prevent unrelated spending packaged with the bill.
“I’m for the minimum wage increases when they are not attached to other big-spending pork barrel. The practice in Washington is attach a good thing to a bad thing. And that way, then you have to vote yes or no,” McCain said. “When I’m president, I’m going to veto every bill that doesn’t have straight up or down votes on the issues that are important to the American people. … The fact is that I am for a living wage for all Americans.”
Apparently, McCain doesn’t think unrelated spending includes funding the Iraq war because the senator did vote for minimum wage increases in May 2007 as part of a $120 billion war spending bill quickly passed by the Senate and signed by President Bush.
PolitiFact.com, a Web site devoted to fact-checking for the presidential campaign, found Biden’s accusation that McCain has voted against raising minimum wage 19 times to be accurate, though not all were pure votes on that issue.
However, the site points out that McCain did vote for raising minimum wage in 2007 from $5.15 to $7.25 as part of a bill that also gave tax breaks to businesses to soften the blow of the wage increase.

John McCain Has No Business In The Storm Zone
Any idiot in the press that talks about a "silver lining" for the GOP because there was a Cat 2 hurricane is just as guilty of politicizing disaster as the Bush Administration was at politicizing 9/11. So let's stop regurgitating GOP talking points and be clear:
a hurricane hitting the U.S. is a disaster, not an opportunity.
having a convention disrupted is not good for McCain. He needs the audience to sell his unvetted VP pick and set the narrative well before the press and the Democrats do it for him. He's lost precious time.
his first choice for VP, Joe Lieberman, stonewalled Katrina post-evaluation on his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
reminding people of Katrina is not good for McCain. See video.
Gustav is not a do-over. Having a more professional response now is neither good nor bad for McCain. He is not in charge of FEMA (coordination, not asset provider), or the Defense Department (heavily involved in the response) and has no role whatsoever in the hurricane response.
candidates have no business in a disaster area. Period. They not only get in the way, it looks like the stunt it really is.
Why is the press abandoning logic and common sense? Because they feel guilty about not gushing over the GOP convention. Well, it was disrupted by a hurricane, and the grown-ups have work to do. Karma's a bitch.

Federal government involved
Federal government involved in raids on protesters
(update below)
As the police attacks on protesters in Minnesota continue -- see this video of the police swarming a bus transporting members of Earth Justice, seizing the bus and leaving the group members stranded on the side of the highway -- it appears increasingly clear that it is the Federal Government that is directing this intimidation campaign. Minnesota Public Radio reported yesterday that "the searches were led by the Ramsey County Sheriff's office. Deputies coordinated searches with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Today's Star Tribune added that the raids were specifically "aided by informants planted in protest groups." Back in May, Marcy Wheeler presciently noted that the Minneapolis Joint Terrorist Task Force -- an inter-agency group of federal, state and local law enforcement led by the FBI -- was actively recruiting Minneapolis residents to serve as plants, to infiltrate "vegan groups" and other left-wing activist groups and report back to the Task Force about what they were doing. There seems to be little doubt that it was this domestic spying by the Federal Government that led to the excessive and truly despicable home assaults by the police yesterday.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/31/raids/index.html
UPDATE: A Professor at the University of Minnesota who lives in the neighborhood where one of the homes was raided yesterday sent photographs he took which rather conclusively demonstrate federal involvement in these raids:
And Feministing has the video -- here -- of the scene yesterday where journalists were detained, along with an interview with the homeowner whose house was raided.

Sarah Palin Loves Washington "Earmarks" supported Ketchikan ‘bridge to nowhere’ during 2006 race for Alaska governor
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
With another hurricane bearing down on the Gulf Coast, the so-called “bridge to nowhere,” championed by Alaska’s Congressional delegation on behalf of the people of Ketchikan, just won’t go away.
Three years ago, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the plan to spend hundreds of millions to connect Ketchikan with its airport on Gravina Island became a national symbol of Congressional excess, much to the dismay of Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young.
Sen. John McCain has made it a habit to ridicule the bridge project during his presidential campaign.
McCain has promised to veto any bill sent to him by Congress with any earmarks. In July, the Associated Press reported that McCain wants to cut all earmarks and billions more to “punish lawmakers for past earmarks,” the AP said.
Stevens and Young have long argued that earmarks have been essential to the Alaska economy, funding everything from the Denali Commission to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
In her introductory speech Friday as McCain’s running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin picked up on the Ketchikan bridge that was never built as a symbol of bad federal policy.
“I championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress,” Palin said at her first campaign appearance. “In fact, I told Congress — I told Congress, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’ on that bridge to nowhere. If our state wanted a bridge, I said we’d build it ourselves.”
That is not how Palin described her position on the Gravina Island bridge when she ran for governor in 2006.
On Oct. 22, 2006, the Anchorage Daily News asked Palin and the other candidates, “Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?”
Her response: “Yes. I would like to see Alaska’s infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now — while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.”
Palin’s support of the earmark for the bridge was applauded by the late Lew Williams Jr., the retired Ketchikan Daily News publisher who wrote columns on the topic.
Williams wrote on Oct. 29, 2006, that Palin was the only gubernatorial candidate that year who consistently supported the Gravina Island Bridge, the Knik Arm Bridge and improvements to the Parks Highway.
Two months earlier, while campaigning in Ketchikan, Palin made a positive reference to the bridge, while also joking, as a resident of the Mat-Su Valley, about Sen. Ben Stevens’ slap at Mat-Su residents as “Valley trash.”
“OK, you’ve got Valley trash standing in the middle of nowhere,” Palin said on a stop in Ketchikan, a quote reprinted in the Juneau Empire Friday. “I think we’re going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project.”
A year later, she issued a news release as governor saying Ketchikan needed better airport access, but a $398 million bridge was not going to happen.
“Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island,” Palin said on Sept. 21, 2007.
The money was not sent back to the federal government, but spent on other projects.
That was hardly “Thanks but no thanks.”
In his statement announcing Palin as his running mate Friday, McCain said, “She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million.”
One of the immediate related questions for Alaska is whether Palin plans to change her position and accept McCain’s view that earmarks should be abolished and that any bill containing them should be vetoed.
This is significant because the state, along with dozens of local governments and nonprofit groups across Alaska, routinely asks Congress to fund everything from new buildings to docks and road work. The Alaska Railroad alone asked for about $80 million this year, while Nome wanted $13 million for wind generation, North Pole asked for nearly $7 million and the Fairbanks North Star Borough asked for about $25 million.
McCain has made his position clear.
“I will veto every bill with earmarks until the Congress stops sending bills with earmarks on them. I will keep vetoing. I will make them famous. You will know their names, ” McCain said in a speech on April 15, according to video on his Web site. He also said, “I have a clear record of not asking for a single earmark for my state.”
Alaska has a clear record of seeking earmarks.
In March, Palin’s Washington, D.C., representative, John Katz, wrote a defense of earmarks, published in the Juneau Empire in which he said the state is cutting back on its wish list.
The Palin administration requested 31 earmarks this year totaling $200 million and “we are not abandoning earmarks altogether,” Katz said, as they are a “legitimate exercise of Congress’ constitutional power to amend the budget proposed by the president.”

Doocy: Anyone who can raise
Doocy: Anyone who can raise 5 kids can be vice-president
By Muriel Kane
During a discussion on Fox & Friends Monday about how Sarah Palin might energize the Republican base, host Steve Doocy began by citing her “lifelong” NRA membership and her husband’s membership in a union.
“Plus she’s a mother of five,” Doocy went on. “And we were out at the state fair and somebody said, ‘Look, any person who can help raise five children … certainly could be vice-president of the United States.’ They said being a mom is tougher than being vice-president.”
Doocy gained notice last Friday for suggesting last Friday that Palin “does know about international relations because she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia.”
This remark led Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart to call Doocy a “moron.” However, conservative journalist Michael Barone made the same argument in his blog at U.S. News, writing that “Alaska is the only state with a border with Russia. And it is the only state with territory, in the Aleutian Islands, occupied by the enemy in World War II.”
Now even Cindy McCain has adopted the Doocy position. When ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked her on Sunday about Palin’s national security experience, she replied in all seriousness. “[R]emember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.”
This video is from Fox’s Fox & Friends, broadcast September 1, 2008.

McCain-Palin: Sloppy To No Vetting? How Can Anyone Trust McCain?
By: Christy Hardin Smith
Monday September 1, 2008 7:03 am
Is it me, or is a statewide tip line being set up for calls and information about potential abuse of power allegations, with Sarah Palin and members of her staff and her husband caught telling big, fat lies about their involvement in "abuse of power" allegations in the midst of a family custody wrangle a fairly big deal when you are looking at a running mate? Or where there are allegations of a wrongful firing to spite the man who wouldn't fire her former brother-in-law?
Doesn't this all sound like an episode of Dr. Phil gone wild rather than a presidential campaign?
Whatever the personal angle in all of this, the public interest question ought to be asked whether or not Palin was using the power of her office to settle a personal score, and whether said actions constituted a misuse of public funds, resources or otherwise distracted from the duties of her office and those of her employees involved in the ensuing mess.
Isn't this about as basic a vetting question as you get in a Veep selection process?

NEW YORK (AP) -- This Labor Day finds workers in worse shape than they've been in years, according to a scorecard released Monday by Rutgers University.
In its first national labor scorecard, the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations said more than 10 percent of Americans are unemployed, discouraged from seeking work or underemployed. That is a nearly 25-percent increase from one year earlier.
Professor Douglas Kruse, a labor economist who created the scorecard, said a sharp decline in the number of Americans able to find full-time jobs, along with growing consumer debt and health care costs, were causes for concern.
''But there are some bright spots long term,'' Kruse said, including improvements in workplace safety, a small but growing percentage of employers offering support for childcare and employee wellness programs, and more Americans who are completely satisfied with their jobs.
Meanwhile, the Labor Department last week said the number of people signing up for jobless benefits declined for the third straight period, but remained above 400,000 -- an indicator of a slowing economy.
The Rutgers labor scorecard offered other sobering findings:
-- About 530,000 were subject to mass layoffs in the last year, growth of nearly 5 percent, but a lower rate than five and 10 years ago.
-- The median weekly earnings for American workers have not grown in real terms over the last eight years.
-- At $6.55, the federal minimum wage is worth 40 cents less per hour, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than it was a decade ago.
-- While employer-assisted childcare and employee wellness programs have grown quickly over the last decade, they still cover less than one quarter of American workers.
-- Roughly 4 percent of the workforce wants to work full-time, but is working part time because they can't find full-time work.
The scorecard, which doesn't assign grades but charts whether indicators are improving or getting worse, is based primarily on data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Uh, er, I suppose it could be called a rebuttal in the strict sense. You wouldn't find me making the following rebuttal in a debate:
The daughter WAS NOT pregnant and I can prove it because the daughter IS pregnant, so there.

A mother that endangers her infant was the weekend story
NOW we know that she accepted the VP nomination knowing the public scrutiny her daughter would undergo as the child of vehement abstinence only promoter! What kind of mother would do that knowing they were going to have to put loads of spin on this story to get it to lean their way!
That's two hidden pregnancies in one year! These people are nuts!
McCain's credibility to make sound judgments is shot!
Congrats Kevin!

I still can't reconcile the latest KOS image showing Sarah Palin with pictures of her just a few weeks before the baby. Was she wearing some kind of corset?? Can you do that if you are pregnant?

and another thing, do you think a down's syndrome baby born to somebody living in poverty in say the 9th ward would get the same healthcare that baby number 5 is going to get all its life (is it easier to believe in the right to life if you've got the state looking after you?)

Put that crap together with the fact that we know many of her old pictures are being removed or modified.....
and look at THIS.... The source of the KOS picture shows being taken on a FujiFilm FinePix S9000 that wasn't event announced until July of 2005 so the picture has a default March 19th 2005 date. So we don't know the ACTUAL date of the picture, just that it was uploaded on the 31st.
And look at THIS... Even close advisers were surprised to hear she was pregnant on the 6th of March. She clearly appears pregnant on the supposed 13th of March. So earlier reports don't substantiate the date either.
I wish I could just take Sarah's word for it but no way am I just blindly trusting any Republican - EVER.

Oh no Dan. We have to stay on the story. We have to continue the pressure on the MSM. They are counting on our sympathies toward women's issues- to stifle any further explanation. 60th, they're off chasing the hurricane- not because they care about the citizens trapped in the storm. Oh no, no, no, 60th. You must remember that this is the same media that doesn't give a damn about the soldiers in Iraq. Britney Spears & Paris Hilton are more important. They have looked the other way as this administration has committed war crimes against the people of Iraq- as well as destroyed the Constitution of the United States.
No indeed. The weather coverage is merely a diversion to keep from reporting on the Palin story. It is also an attempt to use the Hurricane to benefit the Republican Convention.

THE ALASKA INDEPENDENCE PARTY!
This brings up fond memories of one of my all time favorite politicians:
Joe Vogler
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Joe Vogler (1913-1993) was the founder of the Alaskan Independence Party and active in politics, regularly running for public office in Alaska for many years
Vogler was murdered under suspicious circumstances in 1993. Manfried West confessed to the killing the following year. Vogler was buried in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, fulfulling a wish that he not be buried under the American flag. His second wife, Doris, who died of cancer in January 1992, is buried next to him.
Vogler also ran for governor in 1982 and 1986. Several incidents during these campaigns raised his profile as a "colorful character." In the 1982 race, Vogler was taken to task for comments made during a debate. The issue of moving Alaska's capital appeared during the election, as it has on and off since 1960. The media and political pundits took great fun over Vogler's debate remarks that Alaska should "nuke the glaciers" along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska and build a freeway to Juneau. Vogler would later contend that what he said was misinterpreted.

Report: Palin's Spokesperson
Report: Palin's Spokesperson Didn't Know About Pregnancy Two Days Ago
By Greg Sargent - September 1, 2008, 1:10PM
The Anchorage Daily News, in its write-up of the announcement that 17-year-old Bristol Palin is pregnant, reveals that Sarah Palin's spokesperson didn't know about this two days ago:
The Daily News had asked Palin's press secretary, Bill McAllister, over the weekend to address rumors that Bristol was pregnant.
"I don't know. I have no evidence that Bristol's pregnant," he said on Saturday.
The McCain campaign says they knew about the pregnancy, but this suggests the possibility that they didn't -- and raises further questions about how thoroughly McCain vetted, and how much he knew, and knows, about the person he selected as his back-up commander-in-chief.

--------------------------
I think they are not in front of the story because this opens up issues that are much too explosive and nuanced for them to handle right away AND they have no way of taking any position on it with regard as to how their coverage is going to affect their ratings. They are following it on the Internet and will step out into the light when they feel it is safe. As far as I can tell, the discussion is swirling around right wing hypocrisy, abstinence, reproductive choice and unwed mothers. They have a lot to spin here! We have the truth!

Talks began on Monday between the two leaders, marking Morales's first visit to Iran.
"The two revolutionary nations and the governments of Iran and Bolivia are natural allies and will boost their relations in the fields of commerce, industry, agriculture, gas, oil and politics," Ahmadinejad told Morales in the first day of his two-day trip to Tehran, Iran's capital.
"We are striding on a common path towards a brighter future and will remain by each other's side and supportive of one another under any circumstances," he said.

Council On National Policy. A scary bunch of Christofascists!
This is the right-wing kooks that are behind the Palin nomination. They are allegedly the right wing answer to the Council On Foreign Relations. Excuse me! I'm going to be sick.
-------
The Council for National Policy: What It Is
Many Evangelical, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Catholic, Mormon and other ecumenically-minded leaders are members of the Council for National Policy, the 500+ (varies per year) member organization which some suggest plans the strategy of the Religious Right and conservatives in the United States.
The CNP, according to their 1996 Telephone Directory, was founded in 1981. While those involved are from the United States, their organizations and influence cover the globe, both religiously and politically. Members include corporate executives, television evangelists, legislators, former military or high ranking government officers, leaders of 'think tanks' dedicated to molding society and those who many view as Christian leadership. Members in many cases are owners or leaders from industry such as lumber, oil, mining, commodities, real estate, the media, including owners of radio, television and print, with all aspects of life covered. Many are involved in education, determining to influence society's direction by direct input with children and youth. Many advocate from the arena of right wing politics, conservatives, family friendly, reconstructionists, dominionists, and so on.
CNP members are found in Christian organizations encompassing James Dobson's Focus on the Family, Bill Bright's Campus Crusade for Christ and it's many branches, Robert Weiner's Maranatha shepherding group, Gideons, Youth for Christ, World Vision, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Billy Graham Evangelical Assoc., Intercessors for America, International Charismatic Bible Ministries, National Evangelical Assoc., National Religious Broadcasters Assoc., Promise Keepers and many more. The potential spiritual impact of this organization, which claims educational status, could be unparalleled.

Obama says: "off limits"
McCain’s campaign told FOX News that the presumptive Republican presidential candidate knew about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy before he chose Palin as his running mate last Friday, and that Bristol is planning to marry the father of her child. The baby is due in late December.
“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,” the Palins said in the statement. “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”
The Palins asked the media to respect their family’s privacy.
“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”
A McCain campaign spokesman told FOXNews.com that Bristol’s pregnancy was considered a “private, family matter” that had “absolutely nothing to do” with her mother’s candidacy.
Barack Obama, too, said Monday that the reports have “no relevance to Governor Palin’s performance as governor or her potential performance as VP.”
He said he would fire anybody in his campaign who spreads rumors about the situation.
“I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits,” he said. “This shouldn’t be part of our politics.”

It makes sense to me.
That's why the Palin rumor was important...it was salacious enough to focus people's attention on the inherent hipocrisies of the family values, abstinence-only and anti-choice crowds and the appaling judgment and politics of both McCain and Palin.
Sarah Palin made a reproductive choice in Texas, as stupid and reckless as it was, it was hers and her doctor's to make. Now the McCain camp is playing up the mind-numbingly ridiculous talking point that Bristol Palin made a choice, as well. This has brought the REAL issue to the forefront and we should be happy to have that dialogue. Choice is important. Judgment is important. Life is messy and pious sound bytes are not the solution.

You're fired
In a brief press conference in Monroe, Mich., here to talk about Hurricane Gustav, Senator Barack Obama was asked about the suggestion by some Republicans that Democrats – particularly liberal bloggers – have pushed a story about the family of Ms. Palin, who was named last week as the running-mate for Senator John McCain. In a statement earlier Monday, Ms. Palin said her daughter was pregnant.
Mr. Obama, in his first remarks on the matter, raised his voiced when asked whether his campaign or other Democratic operatives were working to advance rumors surrounding the Palin family.
“Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be,” Mr. Obama snapped. “And if I ever thought there was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that, they’d be fired, OK?”
Mr. Obama said the pregnancy “has no relevance to Governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president.” He added that, “my mother had me when she was 18. How family deals with issues and teen-age children – that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics.”
“So,” he added, “I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories.”

Obama: "I'm Offended" By McCain Camp's Insinuation About Pregnancy Rumors
By Greg Sargent - September 1, 2008, 2:49PM
Obama smacks back at the anonymous McCain aide's suggestion of ties between Obama and the rumors that Trig Palin is actually the son of Sarah Palin's daughter:
Asked about the insinuation from the McCain campaign that the liberal bloggers trafficking in rumors about Palin write for websites that mention Obama, the senator said, "I'm offended by that."
The Democratic presidential nominee said, "There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us."...
"Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be. And if I ever thought that it was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that, they'd be fired."
Of course, the McCain campaign never even had to make this absurd allegation on the record, because Reuters so generously let an anonymous McCain aide do it.

personally,
I'm more than happy to question Sarah Palin's version of facts. McCain and Obama's too. Anyone who doesn't stands to wake up one day covered in wool and grazing on grass as their flock jumps off a cliff.
Sorry Obama it really isn't about you!

Palin gave her daughter a choice to have an abortion?

From Ben Smith at Politico:
Sarah Palin's personal story, and her views on personal morality, are at the core of her politics and of why she was nominated, and why she'd energized the conservative base.
Now, her daughter's pregnancy has cast her views on teenagers and sex directly into the spotlight.
Democrats noted, before and after today's announcement, that Palin took a hard line on a question in 2006 from the conservative Eagle Forum Alaska:
Q: Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?
SP: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.
Palin also opposes abortion in cases like her daughter's, and in harder cases.
"We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby," she and her husband said in a statement. Unsaid in the statement is that Palin, based on her past views, would prefer that her daughter not be given a choice.
Even more unsaid is that, from her quote above, Palin apparently gave her daughter a choice. That makes her pro-choice. You don't give your daughter the choice to "murder" a child, your own grandchild, if you indeed think abortion is murder. This is just getting stranger and stranger.

Future bright for fortunetelling in Vermont town
Behold, the future is being revealed and it looks bright for fortune tellers, clairvoyants, tarot card readers and anyone claiming to contact spirits in this corner of northern New England.
Soothsaying might still be banned in some parts of America, but St. Johnsbury has repealed the ordinance against peering into the future that it had on the books since 1966.
"When the ordinance was lifted, I actually felt a large weight lifting from my shoulders," said Maria Pawlowski, a tarot card reader. "It was very oppressive to have to refrain from something that was as natural to me as breathing."

does anyone know Alaska Airline's policy on this?
yes.
Josh Marshall ed. note
(ed.note: In the original version of this post, I wrote that "Bristol Palin is currently five months pregnant with another child, which she plans to keep ..." The meaning of another was to distinguish this pregnancy from the rumor that she carried Palin's son Trig. Several readers read this as an insinuation that this was Bristol's second pregnancy. That wasn't the intention and that doesn't strike me as a logical reading. But to avoid any misunderstanding, I revised.)
I will offer what every woman knows about her body: it's REALLY easy to get knocked up again right away...and YOU DON'T BOARD AN 8 HOUR FLIGHT WHEN YOU ARE IN LABOR UNLESS U R DUMB AS A STUMP.

Iraq war vets rally in St. Paul.
On our way into St. Paul this morning, several members of ThinkProgress stopped to listen to a rally held by a group of Iraq war veterans who are opposed to the war. After denouncing Sen. John McCain’s treatment of veterans and his failure to vote for increase funding for veterans health programs, the speaker of the group said his fellow Iraq vets would travel to New Orleans to serve in relief efforts. “We hope that the world is watching; we hope that America is watching as returning war veterans continue to sacrifice and serve their country,” he said.
