GOP Ponders Convention Delay as Gustav Nears Gulf Coast
Republican officials said yesterday that they are considering delaying the start of the GOP convention in Minneapolis because of Tropical Storm Gustav, which is on track to hit the Gulf Coast, and possibly New Orleans, as a full-force hurricane early next week.
The threat is serious enough that White House officials are also debating whether President Bush should cancel a scheduled convention appearance on Monday, the first day of the convention, according to administration officials and others familiar with the discussion.
For Bush and Republican presidential nominee John McCain, Gustav is threatening to become this year's Hurricane Katrina. A major storm along the Gulf Coast would provide an untimely reminder of one of the low points of the Bush administration, while pulling public attention away from McCain's formal coronation as the GOP presidential nominee.
Senior Republicans said the images of political celebration in Minneapolis while thousands of Americans flee a hurricane could be disastrous. "Senator McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds, noting that McCain postponed announcing his presidential candidacy in 2000 because of war in the Balkans. "We are monitoring the situation very closely."

I installed alligator clips to the two antenna wires and clipped them to the roof here and there. It might work if the leads were clipped in the right places or if the steel roof had two distinct halves not in contact with one another. Sometimes the rabbit ears work better in close proximity to the roof steel.

yea - what he said
And it is that promise that forty five years ago today, brought Americans from every corner of this land to stand together on a Mall in Washington, before Lincoln's Memorial, and hear a young preacher from Georgia speak of his dream.
The men and women who gathered there could've heard many things. They could've heard words of anger and discord. They could've been told to succumb to the fear and frustration of so many dreams deferred.
But what the people heard instead - people of every creed and color, from every walk of life - is that in America, our destiny is inextricably linked. That together, our dreams can be one.
"We cannot walk alone," the preacher cried. "And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back."
America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for. Not with an economy to fix and cities to rebuild and farms to save. Not with so many families to protect and so many lives to mend. America, we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise - that American promise - and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.

Toni, I was saying earlier about Admiral Stockdale...
From what I gathered so far, Stockdale has always defended McCain...but, McCain confessed having broken under torture and Stockdale noted in an interview (I think it was with Jim Lehrer) that those who broke were given preferential treatment like a larger cell and a cellmate.
Stockdale didn't ever relate anything about what McCain experienced, but once after being beaten and tortured, Stockdale was left alone in the room and he broke a window and slit his wrists with a piece of glass. His captors found him in a pool of blood, but still alive and he spent four of the seven and a half years in solitary confinement. he also organized a communication system between prisoners of tapping code on the wall.
Stockdale is the one the media ridiculed for seeming confused and out of place during the debates.
This is from Wiki:
"He was held as a prisoner of war in the Hoa Lo prison for the next seven years. Locked in leg irons in a bath stall, he was routinely tortured and beaten. When told by his captors that he was to be paraded in public, Stockdale slit his scalp with a razor to purposely disfigure himself so that his captors could not use him as propaganda. When they covered his head with a hat, Stockdale beat himself with a stool until his face was swollen beyond recognition. He told them in no uncertain terms that they would never use him. When Stockdale heard that other prisoners were dying under the torture, he slit his wrists and told them that he preferred death to submission."
"Together with other captives such as George Thomas Coker, Stockdale was part of a group of about a dozen prisoners known as the "Alcatraz Gang", separated from other captives and placed in solitary confinement for their leadership in resisting their captors."
I also read a that a study of prisoners of war found that those who don't break under pressure are more apt to be stable in the future than those that didn't. They are more self-assured and confident.

maggiesboy,
Several years ago I was asked to fill-in for a lady during and after her knee surgeries (yes, toniD, it's true).
Among her tasks was (is) to handle the postal paperwork and sorting for mailing 12,000 copies of a weekly newspaper, which I happened to know how to do. Sorta.
Near the end of the very first day of printing and mailing, the intercom called my name to respond to a phone call from the Postmaster. Everyone laughed raucously as I marched to a phone. Every employee was certain that I had fucked up Big Time and they were enjoying it immensely.
As it turned out, the Postmaster was filling-in for the guy who normally handled the newspaper details at the Post Office. The usual guy was on vacation or off sick or something.
The Postmaster didn't know what the hell he was doing and he wanted me (who also didn't know what the hell he was doing) to give him a hand.
But the Postmaster didn't know that I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I picked-up on that pretty quickly. He assumed that I knew what the hell I was doing...so I allowed him to believe it was true.
I made the Postmaster a hero. I made the print shop employees eat crow.

A funny thing happened on Obama's way to the forum
By Jason George | Chicago Tribune Correspondent
6:40 PM CDT, August 28, 2008
DENVER—The Democratic rallying cry Thursday night was "Yes We Can," but Republicans delivered their own slogan to the masses: "Toga! Toga! Toga!"
The battle began early this week, when organizers unveiled the stage setup at Invesco Field at Mile High, with a set of Classical columns serving as the backdrop for Sen. Barack Obama's appearance. The GOP pounced quickly, saying the "Zeus-like" setting fit for Obama's cult-of-personality appeal. Sen. John McCain's campaign jumped in soon after, labeling the Denver Broncos' football stadium the "The Barackopolis" and "The Temple of Obama."
"The toga may have gone out of style centuries ago, but after Obama's temple speech tomorrow night, they're sure to be flying off the racks," McCain's camp said in a press release Wednesday.
In response, Democratic leadership sighed and shrugged, doing their best to downplay the issue. Eventually they responded by circulating a photograph of President George W. Bush standing in front of similar columns when he accepted the GOP nomination in 2004.

Obama: "I Don't Know What
Obama: "I Don't Know What Kind Of Lives McCain Thinks Celebrities Lead"
By Greg Sargent - August 28, 2008, 9:52PM
One noteworthy nugget in his speech: Obama delves into his biography and directly takes on McCain's "celeb" sneer attack.
Obama runs through the story of his mom, who raised him and his sister and once needed to turn to food stamps; his work organizing on the South Side of Chicago on behalf of laid off steel plant workers; and his grandmother, who made tough economic choices and "taught me about hard work."
Then Obama hits the celeb line...
I don't know what kind of lives John McCain thinks that celebrities lead, but this has been mine. These are my heroes. Theirs are the stories that shaped me. And it is on their behalf that I intend to win this election and keep our promise alive as President of the United States.
It must be said that that's artful. It's mocking, rather than defensive. Rather than saying, "No, I'm not a celebrity, as McCain says," he's saying, "McCain's silly buffoonish celeb attack shows that he's the one who's out of touch with what ordinary people want from a president right now."
The speech pads this out with an extensive populist attack on McCain, and a detailed explanation of what Obama will do differently from McCain on the economy.
Good.
