Japan's navy running out of fuel as oil prices rise

Though Japan's self-defence forces have attempted to cut back on fuel consumption, this year's fuel budget is expected to run dry well ahead of next year's budget, local media said.

The military has already been forced to cut back on naval and air force training exercises, and is running vehicles at slower speeds to conserve fuel.

Officials insisted that the expected shortfall would not compromise national security, but it is not yet clear what impact it will have on plans to extend a controversial logistical mission in the Indian Ocean in support of the US-led war in Afghanistan.

The crisis is expected to cause the cancellation of the year's biggest military display, in November. It would be the first time that the annual event, involving 90 ships, 170 aircraft and hundreds of sailors, had been cancelled since it began
in 1954.

Ahhhhhh....altitude....

That is why sammy and Rachel look so "squoze". I completely forgot about the Mile High Effect on people. Thom just brought it up and reminded me.

Having moved there from a coastal city, I know just how real it is. It takes a couple days to catch you, but once it does, it will suck you completely dry of stamina.

The sad thing is they will probably just start to acclimate, right before they go back home.

We don't actually have real soliders--

US election: Billboards of US soldiers cancelled in host city of Republican convention

A series of portraits of American soldiers set to adorn roadside billboards in Minneapolis, site of next week's Republican convention, was abruptly cancelled by the billboards' owners, which feared they would be deemed disrespectful to the US military.

Although the artworks neither display images of violence nor are gruesome, the media company that owns the billboards said it feared pedestrians and motorists would mistake them for images of war dead

The shots of troops in between deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan by a New York City artist were to run in five US cities.

But CBS Outdoor abruptly changed course and has refused to post the billboards in Minneapolis, Miami, Florida; and Houston, Texas. A separate company has agreed to display the images on billboards in Atlanta. Curiously for the artists, the images remain up in Denver, site of this week's Democratic national convention.

The Disneyfication of New Orleans

Many displaced New Orleans residents, black and white, are now calling for the "right of return" – and are in the process creating a dynamic grassroots movement that threatens to disrupt the relative calm that has eased the passage of the city's controversial reconstruction programme. This is just the kind of movement that Barack Obama spent the first part of his career organising for South Side Chicago, and it may turn out that his ability as president to respond to this call proves decisive.

Dalai Lama admitted to hospital

The Dalai Lama has been taken to hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) complaining of stomach pains.

The 73-year-old exiled Tibetan spiritual leader had cancelled all his international trips on Wednesday saying he was suffering from exhaustion.

A spokesman said the ailment had not yet been diagnosed but it appeared there was no cause for concern.

The Dalai Lama has lived in Dharamsala, northern India, since fleeing Tibet after an abortive uprising in 1959.

Protect Access to Health Care

ACLU:

On August 21, 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released proposed regulations that could seriously undermine access to basic reproductive health services, including birth control and abortion.

The rule leaves open the possibility that -- based on religious beliefs -- institutions and individuals can deny women access to birth control. It also permits individuals to refuse to provide information and counseling about basic heath care services. And it expands existing laws by permitting a wider range of health care professionals to refuse to provide even referrals for abortions.

The public comment period on these insidious regulations is open until September 20. Help generate a massive outcry.

Arctic ice 'is at tipping point'

Arctic sea ice has shrunk to the second smallest extent since satellite records began, US scientists have revealed.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) says that the ice-covered area has fallen below its 2005 level, which was the second lowest on record.

Melting has occurred earlier in the year than usual, meaning that the iced area could become even smaller than last September, the lowest recorded.

Researchers say the Arctic is now at a climatic "tipping point".

"We could very well be in that quick slide downwards in terms of passing a tipping point," said Mark Serreze, a senior scientist at the Colorado-based NSIDC.

"It's tipping now. We're seeing it happen now," he told the Associated Press news agency.

Rebels and army clash in DR Congo

Clashes have erupted between fighters loyal to rebel leader Laurent Nkunda and the army in the east of Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN says.

Both sides have blamed each other for starting the fighting, which lasted several hours.

The UN mission told the BBC 18 rebels had been admitted to hospital, while AFP news agency said 50 government soldiers were also receiving treatment.

It is the heaviest fighting in the east since a January peace deal.

When they're fighting us, how can we disarm?
Rebel spokesman Rene Abandi

Congo groups 're-arming'

Earlier this month, US and European Union diplomats warned that the situation in eastern DR Congo was becoming increasingly tense and that all sides were rearming.

Human rights groups said that tens of thousands of people were fleeing as the situation in the area deteriorated.

Protesters denied access to

Protesters denied access to attorneys, forced to march in leg shackles, ACLU charges
John Byrne

The ACLU issued a stinging rebuke to the Denver Police Department Wednesday, alleging that the department may have violated laws and constitutional rights of protesters arrested outside the Democratic National Convention.

In the letter, obtained by RAW STORY, the ACLU revealed that the police refused those arrested access to attorneys. Police did not let detainees use phones unless they posted their own bonds, and even failed to provide shoes, in one case marching a protester into court in bare feet and leg shackles, according the ACLU.

What's more, police are said to have tricked protesters into pleading guilty, by giving them the impression they had to plead guilty in order to post bond. This meant that no one was allowed to make a phone call unless they plead guilty, thus making it impossible for arrestees to even call a lawyer until admitting guilt.

Most ominously, the ACLU letter claims that protesters were told they would be "facing 'years' in jail for a conviction of a single particular charge."

"In fact, all the charges were municipal court violations that do not carry such penalties," the ACLU added in a footnote.

Charges for arrestees were issued on pre-printed forms, where police were told to "cross out" charges that they were not facing. In many cases, police failed to cross out inappropriate charges, and so the detainee would be charged with "begging, loitering and throwing stones and missiles," the ACLU said.

Nor were protesters even given the chance to back down before they were arrested.

"It is not clear whether any order to disperse was given. No Legal Observer [sic], witness or arrestee on the scene we've debriefed heard any order to disperse," wrote Taylor Pendergrass, a staff attorney for the ACLU of Colorado. "Numerous persons, including Legal Observers, asked to be able to leave the blockaded area and were refused."

"After the arrests, attorneys from the People's Law Project and the ACLU arrived at the [Temporary Arrestee Processing Site to conduct confidential attorney-client consultations," Pendergrass continued. "The City refused to provide any access to allow these persons to meet with attorneys."

Perhaps the most outrageous charge, however, is that one protester was forced to march barefoot into court in leg shackles.

Harry Reid on John McCain:

Harry Reid on John McCain: "I just think he doesn't have the temperament to be president" -- and GOP Senators think that, too
Joe Sudbay (DC) · 8/28/2008 10:33:00 AM ET · Link
26 Comments · reddit · FARK · Digg It!

Harry Reid was his usual blunt self talking about John McCain with Nevada reporter Jon Ralston. Reid has worked with John McCain for 26 years, so he speaks with experience. This is why we like Harry Reid. He says it like it is:
"I just think he doesn't have the temperament to be president," Reid told Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston during the taping of "Face to Face," in Denver on Wednesday. The show airs on a Las Vegas, Nev., cable channel.

"I've served with the man 26 years," Reid said. "Do I have the ability to speak with experience about someone who has abused everyone he's dealt with? Someone who does not have the temperament to be president, who's wrong on the war, wrong on the economy, wrong on nuclear waste. What am I supposed to do? Walk around talking about what a great guy he is? I don't believe that. .... "

"There isn't a Republican serving in the Senate that's happy he's the nominee. Now, they're all supporting him, but I'll tell you they have told me. I've had Republican senators tell me they don't think they'll vote for him," Reid said.

When Ralston asked if Reid thought it would be "dangerous" to let McCain be president, Reid answered: "Well, if you said it, I wouldn't correct you."

"Is that right?" Ralston asked. "You really think that?"

"That's right," said Reid, who predicted that Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama would carry the battleground state of Nevada by 5 percentage points.
We need more Senators who know McCain to be honest about him. This is exactly the kind of insight the American people need. Exactly.

John McCain is George Bush, but unstable, angry, abusive and dangerous. That's even worse than Bush.

If I get it right "New Media Strategies" strategy is to spam blogs for their clients.

They're trying to destroy the US...

US Threatens UK On Gitmo Case
By: Cernig @ 11:15 AM - PDT

In a remarkable development at the High Court in London, an email from a senior US State Dept. official has been revealed, apparently threatening to curb co-operation with Britain on international intelligence sharing if details on a detainees interrogation are revealed. Lawyers for Binyam Mohamed, held at Gitmo, have taken legal action in the UK to force the release of details which, they say, will prove Mohamed was ilegally abducted and tortured into a confession. Mohamed claims that his torture included having his penis cut with a razor blade by Moroccan proxies for the US.

In an email to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which was sent on to the court, Stephen Mathias, a legal adviser to the US state department, said that the disclosure of information would cause “serious and lasting damage to the US-UK intelligence-sharing relationship and thus the national security of the UK, and the aggressive and unprecedented intervention in the apparently functioning adjudicatory processes of a longtime ally of the UK, in contravention of well-established principles of international comity.”

Romney Family Gets Security

Romney Family Gets Security Sweep
By David M. Drucker
Roll Call Staff
August 28, 2008, 1:26 p.m.

If security sweeps are the giveaway, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney may be on the brink of being selected as Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) vice presidential running mate.

According to sources with strong Michigan ties, the Secret Service has conducted a security sweep of the home of Romney’s sister. Romney was raised in Michigan, where his father served as governor.

However, one campaign operative familiar with the working of a presidential-level campaign cautioned that a sweep of such a location could have been conducted in advance of Romney appearing as a surrogate — not the vice presidential nominee — at an upcoming McCain campaign stop in Michigan.

Any McCain campaign appearance in Michigan would likely include Romney, who remains popular there.

Other sources and some news reports have also suggested that Romney in the last few days might be traveling with a security detail, although exactly who employs this security detail could not be confirmed.

Romney finished first in Michigan’s January GOP presidential primary. McCain finished second in that race.

McCain ad to rebut Obama's DNC speech
By MIKE ALLEN | 8/28/08 11:15 AM EST

Tonight, John McCain will talk directly to his opponent in a television ad his campaign is airing in battleground states, around the time Barack Obama accepts the presidential nomination, McCain's campaign said.

Aides would give few details beyond the fact that McCain will speak directly to the camera, addressing Obama.

The strip-tease on the ad is one of several moves by the McCain campaign that could distract attention from Obama's big night.

The campaign was fueling speculation about his running mate, who is to be named at a McCain rally in Ohio tomorrow. A top campaign official says McCain has settled on his vice presidential choice and will notify the person today.

Matt Drudge of The Drudge Report, who has high-level McCain contacts, posted a tease this morning saying: "SOURCE: NAME MAY LEAK AT 6 PM ET... WITH SOME SORT OF CONFIRMATION AT 8 PM."

Obama is scheduled to speak between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern before a crowd of about 75,000 at a Denver stadium where the final session of the Democratic National Convention is being staged.

The leak of the McCain ticket mate would cause a news frenzy at at time when the Obama campaign wanted viewers to be focused on Obama's economic and change messages.

McCain campaign communications director Jill Hazelbaker said in an MSNBC appearance that the battleground spot is "an historic ad — I think this is the first of its kind."

Protocol/etiquette

I was under the impression that the opposition usually ceded the air to the other party when they were conducting their convention.

If that is so, it seems like the repugs are transgressing unwritten laws.

There are some election finance laws that might be influencing the current spending right now. I think McCain has to spend all of his primary money before their convention and Obama cannot get to his November money until his convention is over. That might be why you are seeing so much McCain adv right now.

Now it's Pawlenty rumors

Pawlenty cancels numerous public appearances

Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain stayed mum about his pick of a running mate Thursday and one top prospect, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, abruptly canceled numerous public appearances.

Without explanation, Pawlenty called off an Associated Press interview at the last minute, as well as other media interviews in Denver, site of the Democratic National Convention.

Others believed to be in contention for the No. 2 slot on the GOP ticket included former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who was meeting with donors throughout California, and Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who was vacationing on New York's Long Island.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, too, was still a possibility, as was the idea that McCain would choose a dark horse from any number of names that have circulated.

McCain, however, was uncharacteristically silent.

As McCain and his wife, Cindy, boarded a plane in Phoenix bound for Dayton, Ohio, reporters shouted a barrage of questions at the senator about whether he'd made up his mind.

McCain wasn't biting. He flashed a double thumbs-up and boarded the plane.

The GOP nominee-in-waiting is widely expected to name his running mate in the coming days, perhaps as early as Thursday night or Friday. He and his No. 2 are expected to appear together for the first time at one or more rallies planned for Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri in the run-up to Monday's convention kickoff.

In an interview aired Thursday morning, McCain said he still hadn't made up his mind. Far from quieting speculation, this only fueled it as he sought to siphon attention from Democrat Barack Obama's acceptance of the presidential nomination in Denver by playing coy.

Mischievous liberal radio

Mischievous liberal radio host offers McCain VP tips
Diane Sweet

A left leaning host of a liberal radio show has some tips for John McCain's VP search, althout it's doubtful that the GOP presidential candidate will be listening.

Mike Papantonio of GoLeft TV and Air America's Ring of Fire shares his thoughts on Senator John McCain's possible choices for a running mate. The NYT reported on Wednesday that the Arizona Senator had made his decision, and that it would be revealed on Friday, however a new report today says that no decision has yet been reached.

Papatonio's preferred choice for McCain's VP -- he admits he's an Obama supporter -- is Lousiana's Republican Governor, Bobby Jindall.

He recounts Jindal's claims that he "Cast supernatural spirits out of the body of one of his close friends" with bemused disbelief that he was elected Governor after making the claim.

"I have always believed that there is too much importance placed on the vice-presidential choice, but a bad choice can be devastating." says Papatonio. He further explains how Rush Limbaugh's attacks on McCain as being too old, too angry, and too liberal will be difficult to overcome without a dominant running mate that allows McCain to "almost disappear." He then suggests Virginia's Eric Cantor or Florida's Charlie Crist as being able to to fill that need.

"But as an Obama supporter, my first choice for McCain would be Bobby Jindal because I can visualize the entertaining ads that would surface in that race." says Papatonio who goes on then to gleefully describe campaign ads with spinning heads.

Of Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts who is reportedly on McCain's short list, Papatonio says he is the "less creepy choice" yet warns again that Romney would likely face difficulty overcoming the Republican's own campaign of equating Romney's Mormon faith with 'cult-like' groups.

The Pap Attack concludes with fears of the Democratic party. Papatinio proffers "They fear that McCain will choose a candidate with personality, charisma, and depth. A candidate who will overcome McCain's long list of shortcomings."

Papatonio closes saying that he'll continue to pull for Jindal or Romney.

The Pap Attack on video follows below.

Mussolini wasn't that bad,

Mussolini wasn't that bad, says BerlusconiJohn Hooper in Rome The Guardian, Friday September 12 2003 Article historyEven some of Silvio Berlusconi's own supporters and allies were last night squirming with embarrassment at their leader's latest extraordinary gaffe.

In an interview published yesterday by the Spectator, Italy's prime minister appeared to defend the actions of his country's fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini.

"Mussolini never killed anyone," the magazine quoted him saying.

"Mussolini sent people on holiday to confine them [banishment to small islands such as Ponza and Maddalena which are now plush resorts]."

Italy's fascist leader ordered the brutal 1935-36 occupation of Ethiopia, led Italy into the second world war and headed a Nazi puppet government which rounded up and dispatched Italian Jews to Hitler's concentration camps.

Coming from a prime minister who relies heavily on the hard right, "post-fascist" National Alliance, Mr Berlusconi's comments touched a hyper-sensitive nerve in a country whose postwar democracy was founded on an anti-fascist consensus. It raised for the first time since his return to power two years ago the issue of how long his more moderate allies can afford to support him without losing their credibility.

There was a near-apoplectic reaction from the leftwing opposition. Senator Cesare Salvi, of the formerly communist Democratic Left, called Mr Berlusconi's remarks "genuinely disgraceful". He said Mussolini's victims "cried out for vengeance".

Russia has threatened

Russia has threatened military action to prevent the US to continue our military shield idiocy with Poland and the Czech republic:

Comments made by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday warn his country could resort to military action to prevent the United States and its NATO allies from deploying a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Russia has long opposed its deployment, considering it a threat. "We will have to react somehow, to react, of course, in a military way," Mr. Medvedev was quoted as having said to the state-controlled RIA-Novosti news agency. Mr. Medvedev's remarks were contradicted last week by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said the standoff would only be handled diplomatically in a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

New McCain Ad Congratulates Obama
By Greg Sargent - August 28, 2008, 4:44PM
So here's the ad the McCain campaign has been hyping all day -- it's a spot that will run during tonight's speech in which McCain, directly addressing the camera, congratulates Obama for his achievement:

"Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America," McCain says, adding:

"How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight, Senator, job well done."

The McCain campaign is releasing this spot seemingly designed to counter his growing image as the negative campaigner in this race on a day when there's no way to detract from the overwhelming historical resonance of Obama's appearance in any case.

Full script after the jump.

Mexico's high court upholds abortion law

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- Mexico's highest court voted 8-3 Thursday to uphold women's right to abortion in the capital.

A doll representing a fetus and crosses from anti-abortion activists are on display in Mexico City before the ruling.

"This is a momentous decision and legal victory for women and families in Mexico," said Lilian Sepúlveda, regional manager and legal adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Center for Reproductive Rights.

"In a region where abortion is highly restricted, the Supreme Court has taken a huge leap forward in protecting women's basic human rights. Today's ruling opens the door for women across the country to demand that their local governments follow Mexico City's example."

A representative of the Catholic church, which opposes abortion, said it would ring the bells of the city's cathedral in mourning. Mexico is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic.

Four of the 11 Supreme Court ministers would have been needed to invalidate last year's changes that allowed first-trimester abortions in Mexico City.

Outside Mexico City, abortion is legal only in cases of rape, if the mother's life is in danger or if the fetus is badly deformed.

In 2007, Mexico City's leftist government legalized abortions in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The federal Attorney General's Office and National Human Rights Commission took the law to the Supreme Court, arguing that the city can't make health laws.

Thursday's vote by the justices formalized their rejection of the proposal put forth by Aguirre Sandino, one of the ministers, who argued that the law is unconstitutional because life begins at conception and should therefore be protected from that time forward.

But his fellow ministers did not agree.

"The ministers that voted against his proposal say there is no place explicitly in the Mexican constitution or in international law that says life should be protected from the moment of conception," said Maria Luisa Sanchez Fuentes, executive director of the Information Group on Reproductive Choice, who was one of about 150 people inside the courtroom.

"There is always a flexibility and exceptions," she said, citing the right to kill in self-defense or to carry out a hunger strike.

Those who defend the current law say it has helped save the lives of hundreds of young women who otherwise would have sought abortions at clandestine, unsafe clinics.

Many Mexicans have said they believe that the right to an abortion means a woman is more like to be promiscuous.

Brenda Velez, 38, visits an abortion clinic four times a week to recite the rosary, according to The Association Press. "They are just encouraging women to be dirty and loose," she said. "The justices' decision is only going to spread more irresponsible behavior."

Serrano Limon, an anti-abortion advocate, said legalized abortion "gave legality to these pseudo-doctors to open their clinics and continue operating as they are doing, and now, they're no longer doing it in secret, they're doing it openly."

The law applies only to Mexico City's public hospitals. It also allows doctors with moral objections to refuse to do the procedure and does not require doctors in federal hospitals or private clinics to perform abortions, the AP reports.

Before abortion was legalized, many women turned to an herbal tea capable of inducing abortion, the AP said, and also sought out people who performed crude procedures to terminate a pregnancy.

EXCLUSIVE: Cindy McCain's

EXCLUSIVE: Cindy McCain's Half Sister: "I'm Voting for Barack Obama"
Thursday August 28, 2008

Cindy McCain's half sister is planning on voting for Barack Obama, she tells Usmagazine.com.

"I'm not voting for McCain," Kathleen Hensley Portalski tells Us. "I have a different political standpoint.

"I'm voting for Obama," the Phoenix resident says. "I think his proposals to improve the country are more positive and I'm not a big war believer."

Portalski, 65, and the potential first lady, 54, have the same father: Jim Hensley, the founder of the beer distributor Hensley and Co. that Cindy McCain now chairs.

In an interview with NPR News' All Things Considered last week, Portalski said she felt "like a non-person" after Cindy McCain described herself as an "only child."

Portalski's mother is Hensley's first wife; Cindy McCain's mother, Marguerite Hensley, also had another daughter from her first marriage.

"She's kinda cool, standoffish," Portalski tells Us of her half sister.

Portalski also doesn't expect Cindy McCain to make an effort to reconcile their relationship.

"She never has, and I doubt that she ever will," she tells Us.

Portalski's son Nathan, a 45-year-old aerospace machinist, is also backing Obama.

"I wouldn't vote for John McCain if he was a Democrat," he tells Us. "I would not vote at all before I'd vote for him.

"I question whether Cindy is someone I'd want to see in the White House as first lady," he adds.

BREAKING: God Endorses Barack Obama.

SOURCE: James Dobson, Focus on the Family

A few weeks ago, when the Obama campaign announced that Barack Obama would make his acceptance speech at Invesco Field in Denver, Colorado before a crowd of nearly 80,000 people, James Dobson's "Focus on the Family" organization called upon all born-again Christians to pray to God for rain of biblical proportions to fall in Denver on August 28 to ruin the event.

Stuart Shepard, a spokesperson for "Focus" urged Christians world wide to implore of God for "abundant rain, torrential rain ... flood-advisory rain." He added, "I'm talking about umbrella-ain't-gonna-help-you rain ... swamp-the-intersections rain."

The forecast for Denver tonight, August 28, 2008 is for clear skies, a temperature of 72 degrees Fahreinheit, and a gentle breeze of 9 mph---in other words, perfect weather for an outdoor event.

Meanwhile, next week, during the Republican National Convention that will nominate John McCain as the Republican standard-bearer, weather forecasters are predicting a Category 3 hurricane making landfall on the Louisiana coast---a grim reminder of the Republican inaction that left thousands of citizens stranded for days after Hurricane Katrina.

Focus on the Family president and CEO James Dobson, asked for comment on this story said, "While we certainly regret the coming devastation that is awaiting, once again, the people of Louisiana and the rest of the Gulf coast, we cannot argue with God's will.

The fact that our petition for rain in Denver tonight has been denied by the Almighty, and that, in fact, the weather will be perfect for Senator Obama's acceptance speech, together with the news that the approaching hurricane will make landfall during the Republican Convention, we have no choice but to declare that God, in his divine wisdom, has chosen to endorse Senator Obama.

We don't understand the mysterious ways of God, but as born-again Christians, we must obey. Therefore, I am calling upon all Christians to answer the clear call of the Almighty, and cast your vote for Senator Obama."

Dobson also called upon Senator McCain to accept the divine will of God, and reject his party's nomination next week in Minneapolis.

NASDAQ: McCain's Son resignation from SSB "in noncompliance with the rules"

When Andrew McCain resigned abruptly on July 26 he not only abandoned his responsibilities as Chairman of the Audit committee and left the shareholders with a massive loss, he was also in noncompliance with the rules.

MarketWatch - The holding company for Silver State Bank, announced today that the company received a letter on August 15, 2008 from the Nasdaq Stock Market indicating that the company no longer complies with the audit committee composition requirements as set forth in Marketplace Rule 4350, which requires a listed company to have an audit committee of at least three independent members.

As a result of the resignation of Andrew K. McCain from the board of directors on July 26, 2008, the company's audit committee has only two independent members. In accordance with Marketplace Rule 4350(d)(4)...

SSB has lost ovr 90% of its market share and more than $120 million in shareholder equity in the 116 days that Andrew McCain was chairman of the audit committee. His resignation was obviously timed to let him leave before they announced a $70 million operating loss that remains largely unreported by the news media.

The stock continues its decline from $ 8.6 per share when McCain joined the board to 0.54 today.

The cell is a replica of a Camp 5 cell. It brings to life the harsh realities of illegal detention to concerned citizens and highlights the human rights violations that Guantanamo symbolizes. The cell includes a steel toilet, florescent lights and a sliding metal door. Detainees reported being held in isolation in similar cells for as long as 23 hours.

Do The Facts Support John McCain? Email This

NOTE: The election is fast approaching, yet an astounding number of people aren't aware of some critically important facts. Hopefully this email can change some of that, if we share it with enough people. I ask that you don't assume that just because you may know these facts that most potential voters do. BTW, I'm going phone banking tonight so I believe that we need to do EVERYTHING we can to win, and that includes getting this information into millions of homes via email!

1)-If you make less than $112,000 a year as an individual (not household income, individual income) you will pay a lot less in income taxes under Obama's proposed tax plan than under McCain's. You make up part of the 80% of Americans in this category.

If you make between $112,000-$227,000 a year as an individual you will still pay less taxes under Obama's plan then you do right now.

If you make between $227,000-$603,000 a year as an individual you will pay $12 (twelve dollars) more per year than you do right now.

2)-If you get your health insurance through your employer John McCain wants to treat your benefit as taxable income. That will push many Americans into a higher income bracket meaning you could pay thousands per year more in taxes.

3)-If you think corporations don't pay enough taxes you aren't alone. According to the non-partisan GAO about 2/3 of US Corporations paid no taxes at some point between 1998-2005. Despite this John McCain wants to cut the corporate tax rate by a whopping 10% in addition to increased first year write-offs which will ultimately cost us about 1.3 trillion dollars.

4)-If you think oil companies aren't paying their fair share, you aren't alone. Exxon Mobil just recorded the highest profit for any corporation in history (again). Despite this fact John McCain wants to slash their taxes by 10% and not take back the 14 billion dollars in tax payer subsidies that the Republicans in Congress fought to give oil companies.

5)-If you think Republicans are not fiscally responsible you aren't alone. Over 70% of our National Debt was created by just 3 Republican Presidents. Republican Ronald Reagan borrowed more money than all presidents before him, from George Washington to Jimmy Carter, combined. Now George Bush may borrow even more more than Reagan. Democratic president Bill Clinton is the only president in the last 30 years to not only not create any debt, but to finish with a budget surplus.

6)-If you think borrowing trillions of dollars from foreign countries to put on a Giant National Credit Card is a bad idea, you're not alone. We pay hundreds of billions of dollars in interest only payments on our debt each year, meaning our tax dollars are flushed down the toilet for things that no longer benefit us, assuming they ever did. Higher debt means our money is worth less which makes gas, food and just about everything else more expensive. A conservative estimate is that the US dollar has lost over 27% of it's value since the year 2000.

7)-If you think middle class families do better financially with a Democrat as president, you aren't alone. According to research out of Princeton, real middle class wage growth is double when a Democrat is president compared to when a Republican is president.

8)-If you think focusing on which (current and former) candidates wear a flag pin is a waste of time that distracts us from real issues, you're not alone. After all, why should it bother you that Hillary Clinton and John McCain don't wear a flag pin?

9)-Some people say you can judge someone based on the company they keep. That's interesting, because John McCain went out of his way to get the endorsement of Reverend Hagee. Most people have never heard of Hagee, possibly because according to a non-partisan study, while the media has in fact spent more talking about Obama (than McCain) most of that time has been spent saying negative things about him.

How else could you explain that fact that so few people know that McCain's Reverend Hagee referred to the Catholic Church as "the great whore" or that he believes and is on tape having said that "Hitler Was Fulfilling God's Will For Israel"? And that's in addition to the inflammatory comments he's made regarding many other groups including women.

Also, McCain aids, advisers and fundraisers have made about $1 billion from corporate sponsors. I guess that explains why McCain's policies mostly benefit the richest and most powerful among us?

10)-Finally, many people believe you can judge a man by how he treats his family, and adultery is incredibly serious to people (and of course it's the topic of The 7th Commandment). Some people are aware that John McCain cheated on his first wife Carol with his current wife Cindy (who was 18 years younger and quite wealthy), but they aren't aware that John's wife Carol was in a horrible, disfiguring car accident shortly before the affair began.

In light of all of this information you have to ask yourself: If the facts don't support John McCain, why should you?

Bill Maher Spends All Night Arguing With Republican Hooker

http://www.theonion.com/content/node/39358

LOS ANGELES—Sources close to Bill Maher report that the comedian and host of HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher spent Friday evening arguing with Carolyn Dobson, a prostitute from the London Escorts Agency and a supporter of the Republican Party.

Dobson and Maher, who occupied an executive suite at the W Hotel, reportedly argued on subjects ranging from the Bush Administration's financial accounting for the Iraq war to its refusal to release records to the public in accordance with the Freedom Of Information Act. The two also engaged in three consensual sex acts, for which the comedian paid $750.

Maher, who was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2001 for his work on ABC's Politically Incorrect, made his first political observation early in the evening. Shortly after entering the hotel room, he turned his attention from Dobson, who was unpacking her bag, to the television screen, where CNN commentator Eleanor Clift appeared on The McLaughlin Group.

Nielsen Says 2.9 Million Got Obama’s Text Message

Nielsen Mobile, the mobile monitoring arm of The Nielsen Company (and sister firm to TV ratings service Nielsen Media Research), that said the Barack Obama presidential campaign sent 2.9 million text messages last week announcing Joe Biden as Obama’s running mate.

CNet News postulates, extrapolates a bit and reckons that if Obama’s carrier charges him 10 cents per message, that means the effort cost about $290,000.

So was it worth it? Nielsen’s director of insights, Nic Covey, doesn’t talk dollars. But he’s certain the effort was good for the medium of text messaging and the campaign:

  • While much has been said of the timing and the scoop by news outlets, Obama’s VP text message still ranks as one of the most important text messages even sent and one of the most successful brand engagements using mobile media
  • The success of this text-campaign has Madison Avenue thinking even more about how they too can interact with a universe of 116 million text-message users in the US.
  • The value of the message goes far beyond the 26 words and 2.9 million recipients. Here, Obama branded himself as cutting edge, inflated the already enormous press attention paid to his VP pick and further established a list of supporters’ most coveted form of contact: their cell phone numbers.

New NM poll finds Obama leading, Nader a factor

A new poll suggests that Barack Obama is picking up support in New Mexico and that independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader may be a factor here.

The TIME/CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, released Wednesday, had Obama leading John McCain by 13 points in New Mexico -- 53 percent to 40 percent -- when no other candidates were added into the mix. When Nader and other minor-party candidates were added in, 50 percent said they support Obama, 36 percent said they support McCain and 8 percent said they support Nader.

****

The poll also looked at other Western states and found Obama with a 5-point lead in Nevada and McCain with a 1-point lead in Colorado when the other candidates weren’t considered. When Nader and others were factored in, McCain led by 1 point in Colorado, while the two were tied in Nevada.

Those other candidates -- Nader, Libertarian Bob Barr and Green Cynthia McKinney -- are all expected to appear on the ballot in New Mexico in November.

Nader, the poll found, was a factor in all three Western states and Pennsylvania, the other state in which the survey was conducted. He was at 6 percent in Nevada and 7 percent in Colorado and Pennsylvania.

While Nader drew support largely from Obama in the Nevada poll, a TIME Magazine article on the poll states, Nader drew votes “almost equally” from Obama and McCain in New Mexico, and in Pennsylvania he “siphoned off significant support from McCain.”

DNC Day 3: Republican

DNC Day 3: Republican Senator Refuses to Answer Real Questions, Corporate Media Zombies Look On
Arizona's Jon Kyl Shows Up at the Democratic Convention in Denver to Friendly Faces in the Media...Until We Try to Do Something About That...

Here's an object lesson in so much that's wrong with the corporate mainstream media.

U.S. Senator Jon Kyl, the Republican from Arizona, showed up at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night. He was mobbed by "reporters" from the corporate media (people with large video cameras and microphones who turn them on, point them towards famous people, and allow them to say whatever they want without ever challenging them in any way) out front of the Pepsi Center in Denver.

I happened to be there as well, with a much smaller video camera rolling, and the willingness to actually try to hold Kyl's feet to the fire.

First he had mentioned John McCain's "experience" in foreign policy that allowed him to deal with situations like the Russia/Georgia conflict in a way that Barack Obama couldn't. The "reporters" asked no follow-ups in response to Kyl's unsupported talking point, so I tried to ask him how McCain could deal with the two parties as an honest broker, given that he has senior campaign staffers who are paid lobbyists for Georgia. Kyle dodged the question and quickly moved onto something else. I tried to follow up, but he ignored me.

Then, when one of the "reporters" asked Kyl a hard-hitting question about whether he had "seen anything this week that [him] cringe," he referred to Bill Clinton's convention speech, made within the past hour that night. Responding to the compliant, smiling media zombies he charged that Clinton had cited "statistics...that are not accurate." However, the Senator gave no evidence for those allegations, and the zombies didn't press him, so I decided to do so.

Here, then - with my polite pauses, allowing him to ramble on in answer to other inane questions from the zombies, edited out for time --- is what it looked like...

Katrina survivors turn to Venezuela for support

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Some survivors of Hurricane Katrina say they aren't getting enough attention from the Bush administration, so they're turning to Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez for help.

Ishmael Muhammad of the New Orleans Survivor Council has visited Venezuela three times to seek funding and forge ties. He says the group hopes to raise $45,000 for a center to house 50 people as they rebuild their homes.

Crank, about your question

Crank, about your question about my electric...

the answer is yes.

it didn't work and there, evidently had been a very small fire.

the problem started several months ago when 2/3rds of the circuits would blink out for hours on end. this wan't a big problem since I could simply run my electonics off of the circuits that did work.

then the 220 became effected leaving me without hot water and stove. this is probably because of the aforementioned tiny fire in the meter box.

So when the electrician came to loook at the problem, he had no choice to shut down my electric.

Currently the whole house is running off of a generator. We are waiting for the code people to come and inspect the new meter boxes. In the meanwhile, I am in charge of making sure the generator doesn't run out of gas (which the landlord, of course, is paying for).

Anybody Remember Admiral James Stockdale?

he was the vide presidential candidate on the Perot ticket in'92.

He was a POW for seven and a half years in Vietnam, with Jphn McCain, actually, and the media and public in general wasn't very nice to him, didn't revere him and didn't give him any passes for his performance in the opening debate. They painted him the old and addled and unprepared.

A friend of mine reminded me about him and honestly, I didn't remember much about the man, so I'm reading a little about him right now.

Does anyone remember the debates? The discussion surrounding him and if his being a POW was even in the media?

Maybe it's just me, but I really hate the quasi-religious talk that was just done at the Democratic Convention. I really wish the Democratic party would do far more to say that religion is not appropriate in government just as government is not appropriate in religion. I am not voting for a preacher, I am voting for a person who will effectively run the country's business.

We've had the most religiously infused administration in fifty years and they ran the country into the ground. People need to be told to stop being tools. Believe what you want, but stop letting that belief be the ring in your nose by which you're lead. How To Win An Argument Without Really Trying

The next time you hear someone say, "We really don't know anything about Barack Obama," here is your script:

You: "You haven't read any of Obama's books?"
He: "Uh, no."
You: "But you've read the books McCain wrote, right?"
He: "Uh, no. I don't have much time to read."
You: "Before you voted for George W. Bush the first time, which of his accomplishments convinced you that he should be President of the United States?"

At this point, the answer will be something stupid. It might be his governorship, which was less than mediocre, leaving Texas with many problems...

...or it will be his drunk-to-Born Again status which, well, there's a lot of nasty stuff that can be said to refute that one...

...or it will be his successful partnership in a Major League baseball team. He was recruited by the partnership for access to his last name so that the real (more heavily invested) partners could convince the citizenry to build a stadium that would, and did, increase the value of their investment in the team.

I have learned two things about the people who say "We really don't know anything about Barack Obama."

1.) They wouldn't vote for Obama if he was the last breathing politician in America.

2.) They don't know fuck-all about any politician or politics in general.

Don't believe me? Ask them what they know about PNAC. Ask them if Ollie North was convicted or acquitted of any of the sixteen felony counts brought against him. Ask them if they know why Tom Delay is no longer in office. Ask them if they know why Dick Cheney was not drafted in the 1960's.

The reason that they don't know anything about Barack Obama is because they don't want to know anything about Barack Obama but, hey, they don't know anything about the candidates who win their votes either, so they are equal-opportunity ignorant.

When I hear someone say "We really don't know anything about Barack Obama," I know I'm talking to a dickwad.

It's kinda handy.

Higher TV convention ratings this time than last

Interest in the Democratic convention among television viewers continues to run well ahead of 2004, although vice presidential candidate Joe Biden was a slightly less potent draw than Hillary Clinton.
An estimated 24 million people watched the convention Wednesday between 10 to 11 p.m. on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET and TV One, according to Nielsen Media Research. Viewership on Tuesday, when Clinton spoke, was just under 26 million.

Those numbers don't include commercial-free PBS, which estimates it had 3 million convention viewers on Wednesday, or C-SPAN.

The third day of the 2004 convention, where John Kerry was nominated, had nearly 18 million viewers. Day two that year, which was not shown by the broadcasters, had 5.9 million.

Russian Prime Minister

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has accused the US of provoking the conflict in Georgia, possibly for domestic election purposes.

Mr Putin told CNN US citizens were "in the area" during the conflict over South Ossetia and were "taking direct orders from their leaders".

He said his defence officials had told him the provocation was to benefit one of the US presidential candidates.

The White House dismissed the allegations as "not rational".

Georgia tried to retake the Russian-backed separatist region of South Ossetia this month by force after a series of clashes.

Russian forces subsequently launched a counter-attack and the conflict ended with the ejection of Georgian troops from both South Ossetia and another rebel region, Abkhazia, and an EU-brokered ceasefire.

Check it a few hours before the piston fuses to the cylinder.

But seriously, folks. If it is a small generator with the gasoline tank mounted near the engine, it is a risky practice to fuel it while it is running.

So...shut it down, check the oil, add fuel, then fire it back up. If you check the oil every time you refuel, you'll learn the rate of oil consumption.

(It's a good idea to do this when your refrigerator has cycled off. Flipping the main breakers off is a good idea too, so you don't restart the generator under load.)

The racist skinhead logged on with exciting news: He’d just enlisted in the United States Army.

“Sieg Heil, I will do us proud,” he wrote. It was a June 3 post to AryanWear Forum 14, a neo-Nazi online forum to which “Sobibor’s SS,” who identified himself as a skinhead living in Plantersville, Ala., had belonged since early 2004. (Sobibor was a Nazi death camp in Poland during World War II).

About a month after he announced his enlistment, Sobibor’s SS bragged in another post to Forum 14 that he’d specifically requested and been assigned to MOS, or Military Occupational Specialty, 98D. MOS98D soldiers are in high demand right now. That’s because they’re specially trained in disarming Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) like the infamous roadside bombs that are killing and maiming so many U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Presumably, a part of learning how to disarm an IED is learning how to make one.

“I have my own reasons for wanting this training but in fear of the government tracing me and me loosing [sic] my clearance I can’t share them here,” Sobibor’s SS informed his fellow neo-Nazis.

One of his earlier posts indicated his reasons serve a darker purpose than defending America: “Once all the Jews are gone the world will start fixing itself.”

Sobibor’s SS included enough biographical details in his various posts to Forum 14 over the years, including that he’s a single father from the small town in southern Alabama, that a military investigator with access to enlistment records for recent months should have little trouble discerning whether the Army is actually teaching a skinhead with genocide on his mind how to be a tactical bomb maker.

As Reagan era closes, Republicans lack shared identity

DENVER — They'll praise him, invoke his legacy and summon his blessing on their quest to hold the White House.

But as Republicans gather at their national convention in St. Paul, Minn., to nominate Sen. John McCain, they face the prospect that the era of Ronald Reagan is ending after dominating their party and American politics for nearly three decades.

The winning coalition that Reagan built of economic, foreign policy and social conservatives is splintered. The issues he used to define the party have changed. And the national rejection of an unpopular president — Jimmy Carter — helped Reagan launch a political revolution but now benefits the other party as Democrats rally against the legacy of George W. Bush.

"It doesn't look good at all," said Frank Luntz, a Republican strategist who helped the party seize control of the House of Representatives in 1994. "They can't recreate the Reagan coalition. Life has changed. America's priorities are different."

OUT OF TOUCH - McCain adviser: Everyone in U.S. has some health

OUT OF TOUCH - McCain adviser: Everyone in U.S. has some health coverage

Everyone Knows ER's Have Been Closing Across The County ... Except For McCain.

(CNN) – A health care policy adviser for the McCain campaign told a newspaper reporter that nobody in the United States is technically uninsured, because everyone has access to hospital emergency rooms.

"So I have a solution [to the health care crisis]. And it will cost not one thin dime," John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, told the Dallas Morning News in an interview published Thursday.

"The next president of the United States should sign an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American – even illegal aliens – as uninsured. Instead, the bureau should categorize people according to the likely source of payment should they need care. So, there you have it. Voila! Problem solved."

Hospital emergency rooms cannot technically turn away anyone for financial reasons.

"So instead of producing worthless statistics that people fling around in vacuous editorials and pointless debates, the Census Bureau should produce meaningful numbers, identifying all of the sources of funds people will draw on if they need medical care," said Goodman, who helped write McCain’s health care plan.

That plan would use a combination of tax incentives and market competition to make health care more affordable. It is not a universal health care plan – it does not guarantee insurance coverage for every American.
