French leader proposes vote on Afghanistan troopsAP foreign, Friday August 22 2008 By LAURENT PIROT
Associated Press Writer
PARIS (AP) - France's prime minister wants parliament to vote on whether to keep French forces in Afghanistan, his office said Friday, as a new poll showed most of his compatriots want the troops pulled out after 10 died in a vicious ambush.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon will propose to the presidents of each house of parliament that legislators vote on the continuation of the French military mission in Afghanistan during an extraordinary parliamentary session that starts Sept. 22, his office said in a statement.
No date for the proposed vote was given.
The vote would be in line with a constitutional amendment passed last month requiring that any military mission longer than four months be submitted to parliamentary approval.
A survey in the daily Le Parisien on Friday showed 55 percent of respondents think France should leave the NATO mission fighting the Taliban, compared with 36 percent who say they should remain.

AAR? Sigh! I'm not so sure
AAR? Sigh! I'm not so sure about this. I hope they're making the right decision... I was hoping to hear that news but about Nova-M.
Actually, I was hoping to hear they were getting their own show on MSNBC but I was pretty sure that wasn't gonna happen...
I hope this is available in the archive when I get home tonight!

Lol! That was a train wreck!
Looking forward to their show(s)...Sam said the vid of the convention coverage will be going through the AAR servers, so this blog problem won't happen.
starts 3PM Monday
their daily show launches sometime in September in partnership with AAR,er, 4.0, I guess..Marc mentioned new management and a smaller company
It's over Chubby
The blog gets bogged down because there were about 190 people on it at the same time. I don't know if the Sammy Cam flow hits the blog also. Some people just watch the Sammy Cam.
They need better technology because I couldn't hear Sam and Marc's alway too loud.
It might be just me but too much of Marc's personal life. And too much talk over.
Is this a really long
Is this a really long break?
did the audio cut out?
this is not entertaining by any stretch of the imagination.it seems like 5 minutes since I heard anything...and that seemed like Marc was talking to someone but it wasn't broadcast worthy.
this sucks.
Third time?
Gotta get offline now. I guess I'm looking forward to their show, too. I hope for Marc's sake that third time is the charm!

So do I have this right?
Go to AA website at 3pm ET, next M-F, and listen to Sam (from the convention, in a tent) and Marc (from his home) talk about the DNC.
Great!!
Then, sometime in September, and again on AA website, listen to Marc and Sam do an internet variety show, again at 3pm ET. This time with Marc back in Astoria, Queens with two of his cats, and near the infamous fish market.
So glad to hear Marc is traveling back to NYC, at least for a while!

Its really sucks that two people as talented and brilliant as Marc and Sam have to go-a-begging to AAR, but they're the only game in town... *sigh
Unfortunately Nova M doesn't have the capital to invest in and sell a new show to affiliates. But at least, thanks to Randi, they have more of those now.

how many years has AAR been on? 6?
and how many thousands of hours have Marc & Sam been on?
I'd hardly think any sort of probationary period should be needed.
What I heard
That was like a bad Robert Fripp performance.
So Every day next week (or during the convention?) at 3 PM Eastern DT.
I am not sure if the same goes for the repug con.
Then a daily streaming show via AAR (audio? video?) at least thru the election with Marc moving back to NYC. Dunno about Seder.
Additions? Corrections?
Thanks, CC!

McCain cheers gloomy Republicans
McCain cheers gloomy Republicans
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7575808.stm
A year ago Washington was full of morose Republicans.
By Richard Lister
BBC News, Washington
They were watching President George W Bush's approval ratings scrape historic lows, the economy heading for the doldrums and continuing slaughter in Iraq - despite the surge of American troops.
The Republican Party seemed underwhelmed by its choice of presidential candidates and it was not hard to find party activists hunched over a beer and staring blankly into the middle distance, conceding that the Democrats seemed to have the White House wrapped up.
Republican White House hopeful John McCain in particular was struggling to hang in there.
Running third or fourth in the Republican race, he had shed campaign staff and was running on empty.
As 2008 dawned, the media buzz was all about the Democratic contenders Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Even after Mr McCain bubbled up to the top of the Republican shortlist, the national fascination stayed with the historic Democratic contest.
When Mr Obama surged ahead, the news media went into overdrive and, according to the Campaign Coverage Index from the Pew Research Centre, there has been more coverage of him than Mr McCain in the US news media every month this year.
So, Mr Obama gets more press, has raised more money, has a broader donor base and draws far bigger crowds - game, set and match?
Anything but.
Poll dip
Barack Obama heads into his convention with a lead of no more than one to three points in most polls (a statistical dead heat) and at least one suggests he is now the underdog.
A Zogby poll on 20 August put Barack Obama five points behind his Republican rival, reversing the seven-point lead the pollster had given him the month before.
The question Mr Obama's staffers are pondering is, why?
No-one, of course, really knows.
But the alchemy of electioneering allows for some educated guesses about this recent dip in the polls.
This is pretty funny
It's like y'all'r trying to eavesdrop or unscramble radio Marti or something.
I guess I don't have to be jealous...

Buchanan accuses 'McCain's
Buchanan accuses 'McCain's neocon warmonger' of treason
Stephen C. Webster
According to conservative commentator and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, Sen. John McCain's chief foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann is a 'dual loyalist,' 'neocon warmonger' involved in activities that 'none dare call treason.'
Scheunemann's former employer, Orion Strategies, is a lobbying firm with strong ties to Mikheil Saakashvili's administration in Georgia.
Since Georgia attempted to retake South Ossetia by force, triggering a sharp, violent rebuke by Russian forces, Sen. McCain has been by far the most strident advocate of US support for the former Soviet state. And his top adviser, says Buchanan, may well be the next Henry Kissinger or Zbigniew Brzezinski.
"He is a dual loyalist, a foreign agent whose assignment is to get America committed to spilling the blood of her sons for client regimes who have made this moral mercenary a rich man," he wrote.
In his recent history, Scheunemann was a key member of the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), which lobbied President Clinton for war with Iraq for years before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He was also a signatory on a letter to President George W. Bush, just days after the terrorist attacks, demanding an invasion of Iraq and threatening political consequences if the president did not comply.
In addition, Scheunemann served as executive director of Ahmad Chalabi's group, "The Committee for Liberation of Iraq," a pro-war organization formed in 2002. Chalabi, once dubbed the "George Washington of Iraq," has since been accused of providing false information to US authorities and is currently under investigation.
"Most important, Scheunemann's former lobbying firm, Orion Strategies, received at lest $800,000 from the government of Georgia between 2004 and May 15, 2008, when Scheunemann finally severed his ties -- officially, at least -- to the firm," notes The Nation. "Before that, between January 1, 2007, and May 15, 2008, Scheunemann was officially on the payroll as both Georgia's lobbyist and McCain's top adviser, during which time Georgia paid Orion and $290,000 and McCain paid him $70,000."

House colleague berates
House colleague berates military pork king Murtha
By BEN EVANS – 2 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Terry Everett of Alabama unleashed an unusually harsh attack on a House colleague, calling decorated Vietnam War veteran John Murtha, D-Pa., a cut-and-run idiot.
"Don't talk to me about defense," Everett, who is retiring at the end of this term, said during a radio interview this week. "Cut-and-run John Murtha is in charge of the appropriations committee for defense and he is certainly no friend of the military.
"And don't talk to me about him being an ex-Marine. Lord, that was 40 years ago. A lot of stuff can happen in 40 years. Thank you for your service as being an ex-Marine but that doesn't mean you're (not) an idiot, and he is," Everett said of Murtha.
Murtha, the House's biggest recipient of home-state pet projects and a key distributor of them to other lawmakers as chairman of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, has been a leading critic of the war in Iraq. His spokesman, Matthew Mazonkey, said in a statement that Murtha would not "stoop to that level" by responding to personal attacks.
"Congressman Murtha's record of supporting our troops and our veterans speaks for itself," Mazonkey said in a statement. Mazonkey noted that the Democratic-controlled Congress had dramatically increased Veterans Affairs spending and recently passed a new GI Bill that more than doubles college aid for troops and veterans.
Everett's remarks were broadcast Wednesday by Dothan, Ala., radio station WWNT. He announced last fall that he is retiring after 16 years in Congress. Everett's spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

MSNBC: Congress issues 'hard-hitting report with no teeth' about Bush signing statements
David Edwards and Muriel Kane
The House Armed Services Committee has issued a report (pdf) blasting the Bush administration's use of signing statements to reverse the intent of Congressional legislation. However, MSNBC's Dan Abrams and his guests on Thursday's Verdict were concerned that in the absence of sustained public outrage, there is nothing to prevent Bush from continuing to defy the will of Congress
Former judge and legal commentator Catherine Crier began by calling the House report "a very big deal" and noted that former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor had made it clear to her in an interview that she had a lot of questions about Bush's signing statements. "I think if it ever came before the Supreme Court, we'd get a very definitive opinion that this is not appropriate," Crier stated.
Abrams then offered the example of one law intended to prevent retaliation against government whistle-blowers who reveal "possible wrongdoing" to Congress. Bush subverted that law with a signing statement saying that the employees in question could not even testify before Congress without permission from the president or his appointees.
Crier commented that this is an example of how, by issuing orders to federal agencies that circumvent the will of Congress, "the president is then directing the agency ... how to act, and unless there comes time that the issue is then confrontable by Congress or the courts, he can go on directing this sort of behavior indefinitely."
"Why not more outrage?" Abrams asked Huffington Post editor Roy Sekoff.
"It's yet another hard-hitting Congressional report with no teeth to it," Sekoff replied. "They tell us something we already know."
"What should they do?" Abrams asked. "This is outrageous. What should Congress do?"
Crier suggested that Congress needs to establish a mechanism for following up on whether federal agencies are carrying out its legislation as directed, because "unless they find a case, specifically, that can go to the courts, you're never going to have a judicial determination."
"George Bush came to town promising to change the culture of Washington," Sekoff concluded. "And, in fact, he has -- for the worse."
This video is from MSNBC's Verdict, broadcast August 21, 2008.

I am happy for them....and for us!
I mean, having tons of capital behind them would have been great, but even Franken with the money and even a Sundance show, suffered from production glitches. i remember hearing the show and then watching the edit later on Sundance.
I think Sam should really sit down with Cenk Uygur and his crew and pick thier brains, they manage to stream and produce a pretty good show, by the way Maron was talking, they might be biting off more than they can chew
but both seemed happy and excited, esp. Maron..they have to work out talking over each other all the time, though, that crap won't fly on a serious effort like they were talking

Eisenhower's Grand Daughter quits GOP....
Susan Eisenhower Leaving GOP For Good, Cites McCain’s “Rove-Style” Politics
By: Logan Murphy on Friday, August 22nd, 2008 at 9:50 AM -
National Interest:
I have decided I can no longer be a registered Republican. For the first time in my life I announced my support for a Democratic candidate for the presidency, in February of this year. This was not an endorsement of the Democratic platform, nor was it a slap in the face to the Republican Party. It was an expression of support specifically for Senator Barack Obama. I had always intended to go back to party ranks after the election and work with my many dedicated friends and colleagues to help reshape the GOP, especially in the foreign-policy arena. But I now know I will be more effective focusing on our national and international problems than I will be in trying to reinvigorate a political organization that has already consumed nearly all of its moderate “seed corn.” And now, as the party threatens to trivialize what promised to be a serious debate on our future direction, it will alienate many young people who might have come into party ranks.
My decision came at the end of last week when it was demonstrated to the nation that McCain and this Bush White House have learned little in the last five years. They mishandled what became a crisis in the Caucusus, and this has undermined U.S. national security. At the same time, the McCain camp appears to be comfortable with running an unworthy Karl Rove–style political campaign. Will the McCain operation, and its sponsors, do anything to win? Read on…
http://www.nationalinterest.org/Article.aspx?id=19618
Eisenhower obliterates the media narrative that John McCain is strong on national security and foreign policy and shows the growing distaste within the GOP for the destructive Rove/Bush, scorched earth politics the McCain camp has unfortunately chosen to adopt. Susan believes the GOP has lost its way and has finally awakened to the destructive nature of the Bush regime - the one her grandfather warned us about all those years ago.

Oil price up on Russia tensions
NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices shot up more than $5 a barrel Thursday, rising to the highest level in over two weeks as escalating tensions with Russia stoked fears of supply disruptions to the West.
Crude's rally mimicked the wild price swings seen last month and have at least temporarily halted oil's slide back toward $100 a barrel. A weaker U.S. dollar and worries about tightening output from OPEC countries are also supporting prices.
After days of brushing off geopolitical flare-ups and a tropical storm, oil spiked above $122 a barrel as traders became rattled over increasingly hostile Russian rhetoric toward a U.S.-Poland deal to install a missile defense system in Eastern Europe -- a move Moscow views as a threat.
The continued presence of Russian troops in Georgia -- a key conduit for Western-bound oil shipments -- injected even more bullish sentiment into a market that had appeared to be losing momentum on the idea that high energy prices were curbing demand.
Oil watchers said the market's sudden reaction to the standoff reflects a growing acknowledgment of Russia's bear-like influence over world energy supplies.
"People are finally realizing that this Russian situation has the potential to be bad for a very long time," said Addison Armstrong, director of market research at Tradition Energy in Stamford, Connecticut. "The Russians have shown evidence that they're willing to cut off energy supplies to advance their aims. There is concern that they are now going to be much more assertive in that area."
Light, sweet crude for October delivery jumped $5.62 to settle at $121.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier rising as high as $122.04, crude's highest trading level since Aug. 4. Crude prices have settled higher for three straight sessions.

Poll: Franken, Coleman deadlocked in Minn. Senate race
A new poll finds Democrat Al Franken in a statistical tie with Republican incumbent Norm Coleman in Minnesota's U.S. Senate race.
The poll was sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio News and the University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute. It suggests that the race remains wide open because many Minnesotans haven't yet decided who to vote for.
Forty-one percent of those answering the poll said they support Franken, the DFL endorsee, while 40 percent support Coleman.
University of Minnesota political scientist Larry Jacobs, who directed the poll, says he was surprised by the results, given the fact that the Franken campaign has been playing defense to numerous GOP attacks and concerns among some DFL leaders.
The telephone survey of 763 likely Minnesota voters was conducted between August 7th and 17th. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Al Franken Returns To Comedy
Al Franken Returns To Comedy In Goofy New Ad
By Eric Kleefeld - August 22, 2008, 2:33PM
It looks like Al Franken is finally using his campaign ads to do what he does best: Comedy.
You really need to watch his latest spot, because it's pretty damn funny. It features a novelty talking fish toy, informing the viewer of Republican Senator Norm Coleman's links to indicted GOP Sen. Ted Stevens and Big Oil businessmen:
"Now one of the oil guys that Norm went fishing with has been convicted of bribery -- and Norm refuses to return the money," the fish says. "Something smells fishy, and it ain't just me."
Franken has taken a serious tone for most of his campaign ads in his uphill fight against Republican Senator Norm Coleman, in an effort to get voters to view him as a more serious figure. But now Franken may be going back to his roots, thankfully.

Obama Camp Responds to
Obama Camp Responds to Spakovsky's Hiring at Civil Rights Commission
By Kate Klonick - August 22, 2008, 3:44PM
The Obama camp has issued a statement calling the hiring of voter suppression guru Hans von Spakovsky at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, which we first reported yesterday, "unbelievable."
From Obama spokesman Michael Ortiz:
"Given Hans Von Spakovsky's controversial record on voting rights, it's unbelievable that he would now be offered a staff position with the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, a federal entity charged with ensuring that voting rights are not violated. This is yet the latest indication that the Bush Administration is not serious about protecting the most fundamental right that protects all others - the right to vote."
This might be something that deserves looking into, oh, before November.

A new Greenberg Quinlan Roser survey finds unmarried women overwhelmingly backing Sen. Barack Obama for president, 58% to 29%, "but their commitment to voting lags behind the rest of the country."
Key finding: "It is almost impossible to understand the 'women's vote' without understanding the role marital status plays in political decision-making. Marital status not only drives how women vote, but whether they vote."

Since the McCain campaign wants to talk about elitists, there's this from today's LA Times:
McCain, who huddled with advisors at his desert compound in Sedona, Ariz., said nothing in public. A nine-car motorcade took him to a nearby Starbucks early in the morning, where he ordered a large cappuccino. McCain otherwise avoided reporters.

Two boats carrying members of a US-based activist group have left Cyprus for Gaza to try and break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory.
The 70-foot Free Gaza and 60-foot Liberty boats left the southern port of Larnaca on Friday at 0700 GMT for the estimated 30-hour trip.

Michael Moore Dares to Ask: What's So Heroic About Being Shot Down While Bombing Innocent Civilians?
Like Iraq, Vietnam was not a noble cause. It's time we stopped letting politicians and the press perpetuate the McCain War Hero myth.
Moore proceeds, not to question, as Wesley Clark recently did to so many shrieks of criticism, whether McCain's capture really makes him qualified to be president of the United States -- the answer, any thinking person realizes, is "no" -- but whether the Vietnam war was a conflict that can really be said to have produced the breed of "American hero" McCain is so often celebrated as.
"Sadly," he writes, "McCain's sacrifice had nothing to do with protecting the United States. He was sent to Vietnam along with hundreds of thousands of others in an attempt to prop up what was essentially an American colony, South Vietnam, which was being run by a dictator whom we installed."
As Moore points out, in his memoir Faith of Our Fathers, McCain called it "illogical" and "senseless" that he was limited to bombing only military targets.
"I do believe," McCain wrote, "that had we taken the war to the North and made full, consistent use of air power in the North, we ultimately would have prevailed."
In other words, McCain believes we could have won the Vietnam War had he been able to drop even more bombs.
I would like to see one brave reporter during the election season ask this simple question of John McCain: "Is it morally right to drop bombs and missiles in a 'heavily populated' area where hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians will perish?"

>>whether McCain's capture really makes him qualified to be president of the United States -
I thinkl it is more likely being a POW for such a long time should disqualify him.
Why would any rational person want a delayed-stress type with his finger on the button?
More news from forgotten front.
Muthanna Dulaimi was caught while planting a roadside bomb! The son of the leader of the Iraqi Accord Front, which has cabinet seats in the government of PM Nuri al-Maliki and from which one vice president derives, appears to be an active terrorist!

The New Seder/Maron Show on AAR

Need some Seder perspective on the evil "Liebermnn for Liebermann".
Will be listening in September!!!
new rules
was trying to find out when maher is coming back and came across the following:
New Rule: Being a Democrat and realizing you're never going to be president doesn't mean you have to grow a beard. Is it a suicide watch thing? They take away your razor? All I know is, this tradition must stop now, because no one needs to see this.
New "Hollywood" Conservative Movie
Called An American Carol
I saw it on CNN this morning and all of the anchors were saying it was going to change the face of Hollywood and bring out all of the L.A. conservatives afraid to show their faces.
It stars outspoken conservatives, Kelsey Grammer and Jon Voight and Zucker is a convert.
the tension is just unbearable
where's my email, where's my email, why has obama let us all down?
Disqualified
Chubs, Maron said the exact same thing about McCain this afternoon on S v M. It was an anecdote about a heated discussion he had with a conservative girl who horned in on a conversation he was having with a friend. He said he shut her down by saying that and she conceded the point.
I'm just so happy
that no one would expect Obama to pick Dick Cheney for VP.
I hope McCain enlists him though :)

The correct response to an unjust war...
was that of John Kerry. A man who still believes, as McFeeble still does, that we were "right" fighting in Vietnam, should immediately be disqualified from being Prez regardless of whether they were ever a POW or not.
If the Right
and conservative apologists are so quick to throw the Charles Graners and Lynndie Englands under the bus for giving the military and the Bush administration bad PR, why not John McCain?
I just can't believe this story
- RAW
How is McCain a serious candidate again?

Hi SAM, MARON, NANDO....
Sorry for the hyadias, but I had to protest the absence of the SAM SEDER SHOW. I'm still pissed at Mark Green for tossing AAR into the toilet, as far as the loss of Sam and Randi's shows. What did I miss today? What was the big announcement?
Janice Brown
just what he posted in the news letter jbrownboogie
Show every night next week from the convention. A web video show from AAR to come. The technology got in the way but it also made it kinda humorous for me. A real study in physical comedy if ever there was one. You can listen to it from Cat Chew's link above if you want.
I have the first few minutes here but Cat Chew's copy is better audio by far. She missed a few minutes that I that were pretty funny. OMG the satellites are phasing in and out again.

Thank Sweetie, but I was expecting a huge SAM SEDER SHOW
is coming back to AAR, announcement. I knew it was too good to be true. Oh well, I'll take what we can get. I guess it's a start. I see you for all of the convention hilarity! Later!

McCain's Vietnam
By Robert Dreyfuss
This article appeared in the January 3, 2000 edition of The Nation.
December 15, 1999
Humming along under a gray New Hampshire sky aboard the Straight Talk Express, his campaign bus, hero-for-President Senator John McCain says, "The shadow of Vietnam doesn't hang over everything I do.
But he's wrong--it does. Indeed, it defines the man.
Rather than accepting America's defeat in Vietnam as a humbling one and a fitting end to an arrogant and vainglorious exercise of military power, McCain considers the war in Vietnam to have been a "noble cause," whose loss might have been avoided but for the timidity of America's political leaders. Like many Vietnam-era military men, McCain believes that the war could have been won had America sent ground forces into North Vietnam and launched a strategic bombing campaign using B-52s. "That," says Daniel Ellsberg, the Vietnam-era Defense Department official who leaked the so-called Pentagon Papers, "is an incredibly discredited point of view." McCain appears unworried by concern that such actions would have led to enormous US casualties and perhaps caused either China or the Soviet Union to enter the war.

TRAP
I watched most of the Trap series. I can't stop thinking that the series was compelling but tangential to current events. I know that probably means I'm stupid.
Here is my premise. "Freedom" is a word that obviously means a lot of things to a lot of people. It's nice that revolutionary visionaries cogitate how to create "Freedom" for the masses or the elitist or for what ever contingency you choose. That whole discussion is tangential. We have a settled contract for "Freedom" in this country enveloped in the Bill of Rights.
I know the topic of becoming your enemy was discussed but that's not my point.
My point is are all leaders entitled to be tyrants whenever they choose? Don't we have laws empowered by the Constitution? Why aren't they upheld when pursuing foreign policy? That's what all that talk ignores. It assumes the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Magna Carta aren't worth the paper they are written on. That's blasphemy in my book. Jail the bastards and uphold the law of the land if you want us to believe we are "FREE" here first.
Nader thanks supporters

Independent Ralph Nader is up with a reggae-soundtrack video that thanks supporters for helping him get on the ballots on dozens of states.
The video has fireworks bursting as text appears with the signatures needed in each state, and how many his campaign collected.
Nader says that he is on track to be on the ballots of 45 states by Sept. 20.
