McCain's Mispronouncers
Senator McCain got a lot of flack Monday for his speech in which he mispronounced the name of the President of Georgia several times, and stumbled over words like "hostility," "sovereignty," and "Asia." It's hard to keep track of all of McCain's mispronunciations, so here's a handy phonetic guide to the actual names and places, and McCain's recent mangling of them!

Obama outraises McCain 6:1 among overseas active military
According to an analysis of campaign contributions by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, Democrat Barack Obama has received nearly six times as much money from troops deployed overseas at the time of their contributions than has Republican John McCain, and the fiercely anti-war Ron Paul, though he suspended his campaign for the Republican nomination months ago, has received more than four times McCain's haul.
What's arguably even more embarrassing for Senator McCain than Barack Obama's fundraising prowess is that Ron Paul out raised him by more than a 4:1 margin from active overseas military. Ron Paul, despite being borderline certifiable with some of his policy ideas, was the only Republican candidate who was anti-war in the primary. Between the contributions that Ron Paul and Barack Obama have received, it's clear that active duty military that are deployed overseas are sending a clear message that they are ready to end America's military engagement in Iraq.
Barack Obama has raised $60,642 from 134 donors (overseas troops) and $335,536 from 859 donors (all military personnel). John McCain raise $10,665 from 26 donors (overseas troops), and $280,513 from 558 donors (all military personnel). It's important to point out that this study only covers donations over $200 that are reported to the FEC, and does not include the $25 and $50 donations that Barack usually racks up.
Since when is starting a war covered by sovereign immunity?
When the defendants are Saudi Arabian princes, that's when. So I guess bin Laden can't be held liable either for the same reason?!?!!?

JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE OBAMA AND CLINTON PRESS OFFICES
Joe and I are still processing this. But the words that came to mind so far aren't publishable.
...
Since June, Senators Obama and Clinton have been working together to ensure a Democratic victory this November. They are both committed to winning back the White House and to to ensuring that the voices of all 35 million people who participated in this historic primary election are respected and heard in Denver. To honor and celebrate these voices and votes, both Senator Obama's and Senator Clinton's names will be placed in nomination.
“I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion,” said Senator Barack Obama.
Senator Obama’s campaign encouraged Senator Clinton's name to be placed in nomination as a show of unity and in recognition of the historic race she ran and the fact that she was the first woman to compete in all of our nation’s primary contests.
“With every voice heard and the Party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama President of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again,” said Senator Hillary Clinton.
Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are looking forward to a convention unified behind Barack Obama as the Party’s nominee and to victory this fall for America.
Because, after all, it is her big night.
Being presumptuous is cheap
At a press conference just now, John McCain redoubled his efforts to thrust himself into a leadership role on the Russia-Georgia crisis front, announcing that two top campaign surrogates, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham, are going on a visit to Georgia.
So if merely giving a speech in Germany is "presumptuous", how freakin' "presumptuous" is it for a candidate to send their own diplomatic team into a foreign conflict? Isn't that, you know, a job for the President, not a candidate

Despite angry words, Pentagon seeks to avoid Russia conflict
Perhaps most notably, the U.S. hasn't called on Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who for years was one of the CIA's top Soviet analysts, to play a public role in the crisis. Military officials said that decision was made because the U.S. didn't want to send any signal that its military is leading the American response to the conflict, despite Gates' background in Soviet matters.

Trying new approach, CBS plans to spotlight policy issues of the presidential campaign.
The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder reports that beginning after Republican and Democratic conventions, CBS News plans to step away from horse-race politics and actually cover the policy issues facing American voters. Over 35 episodes, there will be 35 segments, each on a different issue. Ambinder adds that it’s now “up to the producers and their correspondents to make these segments shine on TV.”

Gates: U.S. won't intervene in Georgia; 'Is that clear enough?'
By Nancy A. Youssef | McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — Secretary of Defense Robert Gates took U.S. military action off the table to help the embattled Georgian army against Russian troops that remain the country, despite a purported ceasefire.
In his first public comments since the conflict began Aug. 7, Gates made it clear that the U.S. would not answer pleas from Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili that the U.S. military protect his country's ports and airports.

GOP lawmaker is a big fan of ‘The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder.’
The Washington Post reports that a “southern conservative congressman” is a big fan of Vincent Bugliosi’s best-selling book “The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder,” which makes the case that Bush should be held “criminally responsible” for the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. A “source close to the author” told the Post that the lawmaker is Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), who famously coined the term “freedom fries,” but later became a critic of the Bush administration’s handling of the Iraq war. Jones told Bugliosi that he wants to lay low until the election, but afterward, would be “standing there by your side.”

McCain’s gets confused
McCain’s gets confused about the conflict in Georgia.
Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) begins his Wall Street Journal op-ed titled “We Are All Georgians” with a warning about the seriousness of the recent conflict between Georgia and Russia:
For anyone who thought that stark international aggression was a thing of the past, the last week must have come as a startling wake-up call.
Perhaps McCain is giving himself a wake-up call, since just yesterday he seemed to have thought that “stark international aggression was a thing of the past.” In a press conference with reporters, he said, “In the 21st century, nations don’t invade other nations.” Watch it:
At Link
McCain has spent the past few days blaming Russia for the conflict in the region. As the Jed Report points out, however, McCain is now backtracking and saying that he “will decide in subsequent days…who was right and who was wrong.”

McCain: "In The 21st Century Nations Don't Invade Other Nations"
It was the type of foreign policy rhetorical blunder that has regularly plagued the McCain campaign and could have diplomatic ripples as well. Certainly the comment was meant in innocence. But for those predisposed to the notion that the U.S. is an increasingly arrogant international actor, the suggestion by a presidential candidate that, in this day and age, countries don't invade one another -- when the U.S. is occupying two foreign nations -- does little to alleviate that negative perception.
Iraq minister: US combat
Iraq minister: US combat troops to pull out in three years under new deal
American soldiers will withdraw from cities across Iraq next summer and all US combat troops will leave the country within three years, provided the violence remains low, under the terms of a draft agreement with the Iraqi Government.
In one of the most detailed insights yet into the content of the deal, Hoshyar Zebari, the Iraqi Foreign Minister, has also told The Times that the US military would be barred from unilaterally mounting attacks inside Iraq from next year.
In addition, the power of arrest for US soldiers would be curbed by the need to hand over any detainee to a new, US-Iraqi committee. Troops would require the green light from this joint command before conducting any operation.
The Pentagon refused to comment last night on the proposals laid out in the draft agreement between Baghdad and Washington that covers the status of US forces beyond 2008. Britain will strike its own deal with Iraq but Gor-don Brown hopes to withdraw most British troops from Iraq by next summer, reducing the number of soldiers from 4,100 to “a few hundred” by then.
Mr Zebari said in an interview: “Our negotiators and the Americans have almost brought it [the accord] to a close. It is not a closed deal but it is very close.”
After five months of sometimes heated debate, the technical part of the job – drawing up a legally sound document that contains various compromises and is written in the right language – is over.

Obama And Dems Celebrate
Obama And Dems Celebrate 73rd Anniversary Of Social Security With Hit On McCain
By Greg Sargent - August 14, 2008, 10:22AM
Barack Obama and the DNC are seizing on Social Security's 73rd anniversary to launch a series of attacks on John McCain on the issue that try to link McCain with the original opponents of the program back in the 1930s (no, it's not a dig at McCain's age).
Obama uncorked a statement today hitting McCain for describing the program as an "absolute disgrace," adding: "The Bush privatization plan that Senator McCain now embraces would tell millions of elderly Americans that they're on their own, putting them at risk of falling into poverty...It's time to reclaim the idea that in this country, we're all in it together."
Meanwhile, the DNC has a new web vid featuring the grandson of Franklin Delano Roosevelt directly linking McCain to FDR's arch foes, who didn't want a government role in helping bail out the elderly, and saying that McCain "agrees with that old way of thinking" (Hmm, maybe it is an age dig?)...
The Dems are banking on the continued unpopularity of privatization to appeal to retirees, who could prove pivotal in some battleground states, and to offset whatever difficulties the younger Obama may have among elderly white voters. The DNC is also staging a series of Social Security events around the country, though absent any paid media it's unclear what sort of resonance this nostalgia play will have.
Late Update: In fairness, such events do have a real shot at getting local press around the country, which is their main goal.

The Continuing Needs of Iraq's Displaced
Iraqi refugees throughout the region have become increasingly desperate. Despite a decline in violence in the second half of 2007, only a small number have gone home, often because their resources are exhausted. Of those who returned to Iraq, many found their property occupied and suffered secondary displacement.
UNHCR estimates more than 4.7 million Iraqis have left their homes, many in dire need of humanitarian care. Of these, more than 2.7 million Iraqis are displaced internally, while more than 2 million have fled to neighbouring states, particularly Syria and Jordan. Many were displaced prior to 2003, but the largest number has fled since. In 2006, Iraqis became the leading nationality seeking asylum in Europe.

Poland, U.S. agree to missile-shield pact: reports
By Wallace Witkowski
Last update: 2:40 p.m. EDT Aug. 14, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The United States and Poland have agreed to move forward with a missile-defense system where American missiles will be based inside Poland, according to media reports Thursday. A formal announcement by the two countries is expected later in the day. In July, Russia said it would respond to a U.S. anti-missile shield near its border with military action after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed an agreement with the Czech Republic to place a radar-tracking station for the missile shield in that country.
The agreement follows 18 months of negotiations and comes at a time of tension between the US and Russia over the conflict in Georgia.
After the news emerged Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, cancelled a visit to Warsaw that had been scheduled for September, Radoslaw Sikorski, his Polish counterpart, told reporters on Thursday.

Draft FEC Opinion Favors
Draft FEC Opinion Favors McCain
From Roll Call (sub. req.):
The Federal Election Commission will decide next Thursday whether presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) broke campaign finance laws late last year by taking out a bank loan to keep his then-struggling campaign afloat.
In the recently rebooted agency's first major test, the FEC distributed a draft opinion Thursday siding with McCain, whose fate the commission's three Democrats and three Republicans must still decide at the public meeting next week.
The agency's legal department concluded that McCain did not break the law by taking the loan -- and then exceeding contribution limits -- despite warnings to the contrary from since-ousted FEC chairman David Mason, who had a tense back-and-forth with the campaign in early 2008.
"We believe that the matching payment act does permit candidates to withdraw after they have been declared eligible," the FEC's lawyers concluded in their new draft guidance. "Although no eligible candidate may exceed the expenditure limits, the statues simply do not say whether the commission has discretion to reverse its eligibility determination and decertify a candidate."

Sen. Coleman Wasn't Paying
Sen. Coleman Wasn't Paying Utility Bills In His Sweetheart Apartment Deal In Lobbyist's Capitol Hill Home
By Andrew Tilghman - August 14, 2008, 11:50AM
You might remember earlier this summer when we pointed out that Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) was getting an exceptionally good deal on an apartment in Capitol Hill.
And -- who would have guessed? -- it's in a townhouse owned by Coleman's political backer and longtime Republican operative Jeff Larson.
Today, Coleman concedes to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he wasn't paying any utility bills and didn't even have a written lease until July, when reporters started asking about the arrangement.
Responding to media requests, the Coleman campaign Wednesday released copies of the lease that Coleman and Larson signed July 3, and the $532.88 check that Coleman's wife, Laurie, made out July 14 to Larson for 12 months' worth of unspecified utilities.
Finding a place for $600 a month just a few blocks from the Capitol is difficult, to say the least. And the deal -- and questions about whether Coleman was essentially accepting undisclosed gifts -- are cropping up as an issue in Coleman's reelection bid against former comedian-turned-Senate-candidate Al Franken.
According to the Star-Tribune:
"The more we learn about this sweetheart rent deal, the more concerns it raises," said Franken spokesman Andy Barr. "Now that Coleman is finally answering questions about what he got, it's time for him to start answering questions about what Larson got in return."

Health Care Politics, by Ralph Nader 8-13
One of my favorite monthly publications is Registered Nurse – the journal of the fast growing, progressive California Nurses Association (CNA) – a union that stands up for patients rights and well-being.
The June 2008 issue contains stories that illustrate how this nurses group takes stands. On June 19, the CNA sponsored street rallies for its Medicare for all (single-payer with free choice of doctor and hospital) in San Francisco and a dozen other major cities around the nation.
For over a decade these nurses have made full Medicare for all their major goal.
They have run voter initiatives, lobbied legislatures and have opposed sweetheart labor-management deals like those embraced by the Service Employees International Union – SEIU. (SEIU also opposes single-payer health insurance which is supported by a majority of physicians and the American people.)
The June magazine describers the autocratic native of SEIU toward its members and how its leader, Andy Stern, cuts labor deals with large corporate employers that shockingly deprive workers of normal union rights.
...
Stern rejected single-payer health insurance at his recent union convention. Senator Barack Obama has declined to propose single-payer as well. SEIU is pouring tens of millions of dollars to elect Senator Obama President. CNA works to eliminate “the insurance nightmare through establishing a high-quality, single payer healthcare system. (See: http://www.guaranteedhealthcare.org/blog)
The current health care industry is a wasteful, redundant, defrauding mess costing Americans over 2.2 trillion this year and hundreds of thousands of avoidable injuries, fatalities and serious infections a year. The honest, competent caregivers are on the edge of despair, unable to do their best work due to the domination and control of commercial-profit priorities which include denial of care by these corporations.
People die or get sicker sometimes when they are denied health care. People die when they cannot afford health insurance – 18,000 Americans a year according to the Institute of Medicine
Corporate billing fraud and abuse costs over $200 billion a year. Ask Malcolm Sparrow of the Kennedy School at Harvard University or read his book License to Steal.
Do you ever hear John McCain or Barack Obama focus public attention on these tragedies and rip-offs of consumers and taxpayers?
The employers of health insurance companies, hospital chains and drug industry are pouring money into the coffers of these two men and their parties.
Strange as it many seem, on June 26, 2008 even the principled, independent California Nurses Association fell in line with the AFL-CIO. The CNA endorsed Senator Barack Obama.
Well, Senator Obama doesn’t have to worry a minute about CNA’s nurses putting up one of their famous critical demonstrations at his events. He can continue dialing for corporate dollars.

Obama also allowed Hillary supporters to insert an absurd statement into the platform suggesting that media sexism spurred her loss and that “demeaning portrayals of women ... dampen the dreams of our daughters.” This, even though postmortems, including the new raft of campaign memos leaked by Clintonistas to The Atlantic — another move that undercuts Obama — finger Hillary’s horrendous management skills....
It would have been better to put this language in the platform: “A woman who wildly mismanages and bankrupts a quarter-of-a-billion-dollar campaign operation, and then blames sexism in society, will dampen the dreams of our daughters.”

A reader just sent me this video attack ad he made about John McCain. It's brutal. Here's the ad, followed by my commentary:
could easily imagine the Republicans making an ad like this about Obama, and it would go viral across the country, and the media would rebroadcast it a thousand times, Swift Boat style, until it was imprinted in the head of every American voter. I'm pretty sure that if we did something like this, if a pro-Obama organization made a video like this about McCain, the Democrats would be roundly denounced and we'd spend every day between now and the election telling America that we really do think McCain is the greatest hero America has ever had.
Which leads to a larger analysis about why we could never get away with something like this - a video that concludes with a shot of the White House and the announcer saying "Sorry, John, your wife can't buy you this house" - while John McCain is repeatedly accusing Barack Obama of being un-American, and no one says a word. Note that the front page of the NYT and Washington Post have both highlighted a new anti-Obama smear book, and Larry King did a show about the thing. And that's okay. But when we smear back, we don't get the front page of the Post and the Times, don't get Larry King. Their attacks get treated as credible, ours get treated as venomous indications of how black our souls really are. (More on that later.)
Why do they always get away with this kind of attack, and we never do?

The Politics of Wishful Thinking
Buyers Remorse Over Obama
By JOHN WALSH
In the latest issue of The Nation, an “open letter” appears in which the signatories position themselves as abject supplicants to Obama, begging him to revert to his earlier stances in his primary campaign.
Thus the letter states: “Since your historic victory in the primary, there have been troubling signs that you are moving away from the core commitments shared by many who have supported your campaign, toward a more cautious and centrist stance……” Several paragraphs later, the letter finally gets around to mentioning “withdrawal from Iraq on a fixed timetable” as one of the positions that Obama “embraced” during the primary.
When others have raised such criticisms, Obama has responded that they have not been listening to him. On this one, I am with Obama. How can one take this guy seriously as an “antiwar” candidate when he has voted for hundreds of billions of dollars to fund the Iraq war and to slaughter hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis? Neither Ron Paul nor Dennis Kucinich, both presidential candidates, nor Barbara Lee voted for these funds for a “war of aggression,” as Ralph Nader has properly called it. On this score Obama’s voting record is no different from McCain’s or Hillary Clinton’s.
And Obama made it clear long ago in one of his few clear statements on the war that he does not oppose all wars and in fact supports “smart” ones. Iraq is thus not a criminal war, a war of aggression, but merely a “dumb” war. Presumably the war in Afghanistan that Obama so loves is to be a “smart” war. When you come right down to it, how different is Obama’s position that the war is not “smart” from McCain’s that, until the surge, the war was not “smartly” waged? I would say that the difference is less than a dime.
The letter is also frankly dishonest when it says that Obama is simply moving to a more “centrist stance” In what sense “centrist”? The war is wildly unpopular and close to 70% of Americans want the U.S. out of Iraq asap. What is “centrist” about moving away from a landslide majoritarian position? And what is the “peace”candidate doing when he calls for 100,000 more active duty army and marines, when he calls for more military spending, when he calls for stepping up the war on Afghanistan, when he talks belligerently about Iran, and when he equivocates on how many tens of thousands of troops are to be left in Iraq? All these are positions that the “peace”candidate took during the primary. They are not new.
The “open letter” also pretends that Obama took a position for universal health care during the primary. That is true only in words. As Paul Krugman has pointed out, Obama’s health care plan is even worse than was Hillary Clinton’s – a mighty low bar.
The worst part of the supplicants’ letter is that it is all based on wishful thinking. The idea that Obama is an “antiwar” or progressive candidate is a fantasy, never supported by the facts. And there is no way to change Obama by begging as the letter does. There is plenty of carrot, in fact downright ass kissing, in the letter - but no stick.
Ambitious pols understand sticks.
What is awfully irritating is that Katrina Vanden Heuval and the rest of the “liberal”elite criticize supporters of McKinney/Clemente and Nader/Gonzalez for “wishful thinking.” Compared to the sentiments and views of the supplicants’ letter, supporters of third party candidates are hard core realists. And it is very sad to see some of the signatories of this letter who in better times would have been men and women who put principle over partisanship. Read the letter carefully. Look at the signatories. It may bring tears.

Obama's non-plan for ending the war
A Master of Ambiguity: Obama's Non-Plan for Ending the War in Iraq
August 14, 2008
By Anthony DiMaggio
Over the last month, Barack Obama's comments about withdrawal have raised major questions about the U.S. commitment to occupying Iraq. The statements Obama has made over the past year, when taken in total, leave no doubt that he is a master of ambiguity and deception.
Obama has made wonderful rhetorical statements aimed at placating the majority of Americans, who have viewed the Iraq war as "not worth it" since late 2004, and supported a timetable for withdrawal since mid-to-late 2005. Obama recently promised: "Let me be as clear as I can be. I intend to end this war. My first day in office I will bring the Joint Chiefs of Staff in, and I will give them a new mission, and that is to end this war - responsibly, deliberately, but decisively." This statement was made in response to media complaints about Obama's perceived flip-flopping on the Iraq issue. It's not difficult to see why this confusion has arisen. Obama has claimed that he is open to "refine[ing]" his policies on Iraq after meeting with military commanders, should he win the presidency. The New York Times described Obama's posturing as driven by his desire "to retain flexibilitiy as violence declines [in Iraq] without abandoning a central promise of his campaign: that if elected, he would end the war."
But has Obama really promised to end the Iraq war? The evidence is not very convincing. Obama has vaguely stated that "the pace of withdrawal would be dictated by the safety and security of our troops and the need to maintain stability." It is true that in the past Obama introduced the "Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007." That plan, however, was precisely what its name suggested, a blueprint for de-escalation, not for withdrawal or for ending the war. The bill promised only to remove all "combat" troops by March of 2008. It did not promise to remove all troops from Iraq, or prohibit plans for permanent military bases - requirements that Democrats have refused to demand. Rather, the plan has always been to retain an extended troop presence in Iraq (perhaps permanently), allegedly in order to train Iraq forces and "fight terrorism."
Opposition on the part of Obama to a full withdrawal was also reflected in the admission (during a primary debate) that he could not guarantee a full withdrawal from Iraq by 2013. This claim demonstrates the full extent of Obama's commitment to misrepresenting his views to the American public. His promise to "end this war now" amounts to little more than propaganda in light of claims that U.S. combat operations will continue for at least the next five years, perhaps indefinitely. It is difficult to see how substantively different this is from Republican presidential front-runner John McCain, who recently claimed he would remove most troops by 2013 as well.
It is true that Obama recently announced a 16 month timetable for the withdrawal of "combat" troops (presumably, sometime in 2010). However, this promise has again been tempered by fuzzy claims that withdrawal is contingent upon conditions on the ground in Iraq - as they are perceived by American political elites. Obama repeated (following the 16 month announcement) that there were "deep concerns" about a timetable "that doesn't take into account what they [military leaders] anticipate might be some sort of change in conditions." Presumably, changing assessments on the part of military leaders would lead to more revisions regarding the prospects for a concrete timetable for withdrawal. . .
Obama's non-plan for ending the war, pt. 2
There are consequences that result from Obama's backpedaling and deception. His constantly shifting standards for withdrawal have allowed neoconservative papers like the Washington Post to manipulate his statements in favor of their own pro-war agenda (such manipulation hasn't proven all that hard to accomplish). This is all too clear in recent editorials in the paper. One editorial from early July 2008, for example, claims that "Mr. Obama can't afford not to update his Iraq policy. Once he has the conversations he's promising with U.S. commanders, he will have plenty of information that 'contradicts the notion' of his rigid plan. Iraq's improvement means that American forces probably can be reduced next year [2009], but it would be folly to begin a forced march out of the country without regard to the risks of renewed sectarian warfare and escalating intervention in the country by Iran and other of Iraq's neighbors."
The Post's distortions have become even more extreme in recent weeks, as is evident in a late July editorial entitled: "Mr. Obama in Iraq: Did He Really Find Support for his Withdrawal Plan?" In full Orwellian style, the article propagandized that "neither U.S. commanders nor Iraq's principal political leaders actually support Obama's [16-month] strategy." The basis for this claim?: "Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki's timetable [for withdrawal] would extend at least seven months beyond Mr. Obama's." Maliki's support for a timetable, the Post contends, is actually more in line with General Petraeus' contempt for a timetable, since Maliki has pledged that a withdrawal would be premised upon Iraqi readiness. Presumably, the Post feels that since American military leaders have repeatedly claimed that Iraqi forces are not ready to take over security operations, this nullifies the Iraqi public's and political leaders' longstanding support for a withdrawal timetable. While the outrageousness of the Post's logic (or illogic) and the severity of its contempt for the people of Iraq are truly baffling, these conditions are the inevitable result of an Obama campaign that's constantly shifting its promises and standards on Iraq.
American politics need not be dominated by such spin and propaganda on the part of both Democratic and Republican parties and the media. However, a substantive change in electoral politics can only be premised upon the public's demands for more transparency from Democratic and Republican presidential candidates. Presidential candidates have demonstrated their longstanding commitment to spin, at the expense of sincere, open dialogue. Only increased activism and public criticism of this spin will produce serious changes to the American propaganda state.

American Airlines fined $7.1 million
Posted: 04:20 PM ET
(CNN) — Federal regulators announced $7.1 million in fines against American Airlines on Thursday over maintenance issues and problems with its drug- and alcohol-testing programs.
“The FAA believes the large total amount of the fine for these violations is appropriate because American Airlines was aware that appropriate repairs were needed, and instead deferred maintenance. In intentionally continuing to fly the aircraft, the carrier did not follow important safety regulations intended to protect passengers and crew,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement announcing the decision.
“In accordance with FAA procedures for handling these matters, we have requested to meet with the FAA after we have had time to thoroughly review their findings, so that we may discuss the issues,” the airline said in a written statement. “Since these matters are ongoing with the FAA, we will not have any further comment at this time.”

CNN is no stranger to having its political coverage bought and paid for by big energy companies. During the primary season, at least three presidential debates were sponsored by the coal industry. The coal industry has also sponsored CNN’s general election coverage.
As the Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson noted yesterday, CNN’s senior business correspondent Ali Velshi recently joined Congressional conservatives on a trip to Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for a pro-oil drilling propaganda tour. In a subsequent interview with Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), an ardent drilling advocate, Velshi never once questioned any of her false statements on drilling.

EXCLUSIVE: FAA Tapes Reveal
EXCLUSIVE: FAA Tapes Reveal Drama of Obama Jet Incident
Audio Contradicts FAA Account of "No Emergency"
By BRIAN ROSS, JOSEPH RHEE, and ERIC LONGABARDI
August 14, 2008—
The incident involving Sen. Barack Obama's campaign plane last month was much more serious than the airline or the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to FAA control tower tapes obtained by ABC News.
At the time, an FAA spokesperson said the pilot did not declare an emergency and the airline owner, Midwest Airlines, said safety "was never an issue."
The tapes, to be broadcast tonight on ABC News' World News with Charles Gibson, show otherwise.
Just 41 seconds after discovering he no longer had full control of the plane's up and down movements, the pilot told an FAA air traffic controller "at this time we would like to declare an emergency and also have CFR [crash equipment] standing by in St. Louis."
An FAA spokesperson acknowledged today that its statements at the time of "no emergency" were wrong, based, the spokesperson said, on erroneous reports from FAA air traffic managers.
"We later learned there was an emergency declared," FAA spokesperson Elizabeth Cory said. The FAA had not publicly corrected the record until today, after being contacted by ABC News.
Obama's plane, an MD-81 chartered from Midwest, was diverted to St. Louis, shortly after takeoff from Chicago on July 7. Over the plane intercom system, the pilot told Obama and campaign staff and reporters there was "a little bit of controllability issue in terms of our ability to control the aircraft in the pitch, which is the nose up and nose down mode."
In contrast, the FAA tapes reveal the pilot reported he no longer had 100 per cent control, with only "limited pitch authority" of the aircraft.
A few minutes later, the pilot formally declared an emergency situation. (click here to listen to an edited version of the audio)
Asked by the St. Louis tower controller which runway he wanted to land on, the pilot responded, "Well, which one is the longest?"
The pilot then reported, "We have Senator Obama on board the aircraft and his campaign."
Unbeknownst to the pilot, an emergency evacuation slide had inflated inside the tail of the jet, affecting control cables there.
As tension mounted and the pilot rapidly descended from 32,000 feet, he was asked how many were on the jet.
"51 souls on board," he responded.
Then, at 10,000 feet, the pilot suddenly regained control.
"Ah, sir, we had a pitch authority problem. Now that we've come down to a lower altitude, it seems to have rectified itself. We do have pitch control of the aircraft at this time," the unnamed Midwest pilot reported to the St. Louis control tower.
As the jet landed safely in St. Louis, Sen. Obama called his wife and, apparently unaware of the drama in the cockpit, tried to laugh it off.

Fernando, thanks for 'emptiness' post! It took me on a 'trip'!
Thanks for your super posts on last thread regarding Buddhist emptiness...
http://www.thebigview.com/buddhism/emptiness.html
[excerpt]
...The Buddhist notion of emptiness is often misunderstood as nihilism. Unfortunately, 19th century Western philosophy has contributed much to this misconstruction. Meanwhile Western scholars have acquired enough knowledge about Buddhism to realise that this view is far from accurate.
The only thing that nihilism and the teaching of emptiness can be said to have in common is a sceptical outset. While nihilism concludes that reality is unknowable, that nothing exists, that nothing meaningful can be communicated about the world, the Buddhist notion of emptiness arrives at just the opposite, namely that ultimate reality is knowable, that there is a clear-cut ontological basis for phenomena, and that we can communicate and derive useful knowledge from it about the world. Emptiness (sunyata) must not be confused with nothingness. Emptiness is not non-existence and it is not non-reality.....
[end excerpt]
==============================================
Is crisis a matter of nonexistence or the reality that we only exist in relation to all else that exists? Are we part of a Great Oneness and we can't be extracted from it? Are we one big twinkling reflection sent back and forth eternally, sometimes rock-solid material, sometimes the shimmer or flash of transition, sometimes the incandescence of conscious thought?
Further on in the piece is mentioned the psychology of 'self'. This made me think of another metaphor, something from our present political reality, that is like the empty glass metaphor:
The individual placed in isolation by torturers. Separated from all that grounds one in the experience of being a 'person in the world', in the absence of things to relate to, the isolated individual loses psychological bearings; if not so far gone as to preclude recuperation from the experience, the individual still must cope with having experienced that he could not rely on the 'self' to prevent the experience of deterioration due to the abuse. We do not and can not exist with a sense of integrated wholeness in a vacuum devoid of things human -- kindness and love, acknowledgment, belonging, understanding, participation, contribution, etc. -- even if the nature of these things is negative and destructive. It is nothingness that cannot be tolerated is experienced as an unbearable emptiness.
I would think that a bhodisaatva would have a better chance of resisting the forces of dehumanization than someone without information about emptiness....
(It's important to remember Science is not supposed to prove anything, merely measure. Anytime Science reaches to unlock doors of mystery and assumes Priesthood by claiming it has the Keys to the Temple of the Truths, it is counter to the inherent limitations of Science.)

Future wars 'to be fought
Future wars 'to be fought with mind drugs'
Future wars could see opponents attacking each other's minds, according to a report for the US military.
Landmines releasing brain-altering chemicals, scanners reading soldiers' minds and devices boosting eyesight and hearing could all one figure in arsenals, suggests the study.
Sophisticated drugs, designed for dementia patients but also allowing troops to stay awake and alert for several days are expected to be developed, according to the report. It is thought that some US soldiers are already taking drugs prescribed for narcolepsy in an attempt to combat fatigue.
As well as those physically and mentally boosting one's own troops, substances could also be developed to deplete an opponents' forces, it says.
"How can we disrupt the enemy's motivation to fight?" It asks. "Is there a way to make the enemy obey our commands?" Research shows that "drugs can be utilized to achieve abnormal, diseased, or disordered psychology" among one's enemy, it concludes.
Research is particularly encouraging in the area of functional neuroimaging, or understanding the relationships between brain activity and actions, the report says, raising hopes that scanners able to read the intentions or memories of soldiers could soon be developed.
Some military chiefs and law enforcement officials hope that a new generation of polygraphs, or lie detectors, which spot lie-telling by observing changes in brain activity, can be built.
"Pharmacological landmines," which release drugs to incapacitate soldiers upon their contact with them, could also be developed, according to the report's authors.

Jackson Browne Sues GOP And McCain Campaign
Singer, songwriter, liberal activist and now John McCain scourge Jackson Browne filed a lawsuit today against the presumptive GOP nominee and the Republican Party for failing to obtain a license to use one of his songs in a television commercial.
The song, "Running on Empty," has been used by the Ohio Republican Party (not the McCain campaign) apparently against Browne's approval. The music icon also claims that in doing so, the false perception is created that he is endorsing McCain's candidacy.
This is the second time in a week a celebrity has chastised the McCain camp for allegedly illegally using his or her material. Mike Myers, earlier this week, insisted that the Arizona Republican take down a web ad that -- mocking Obama's celebrity -- used a "we're not worthy" clip from his movie Wayne's World.

Karl Rove writes, instead of showing up for his subpoena...
Karl Rove writes for the Wall Street Murdoch (amazing collection of propaganda today) instead of showing up for his Congressional subpoena, again. Does it really matter what he has to say about anything, when he is in contempt of Congress and the majority of Americans have nothing but contempt for him?
I won't bother quoting his latest theory on how the upcoming election will be rigged, err, won. There is no point.
And Now For Something Completely Different (but related)
But I will share this with you. On my last trip to the deep south, I learned - from a well informed individual - that the "old man is going to pull his protection of Karl." Who is the old man? Well none other than George H. W. Bush. Apparently the old man has had "quite enough" of Karl and believes Karl (rightly or wrongly) is the cause of everything gone wrong in Jr.'s presidency.
Although, to be fair, I don't think Jr.'s failed presidency is all Rove's fault, despite the many scandals attached directly to Rove. But that is my opinion. The old man, however, is apparently convinced that Karl is entirely responsible for Jr.'s failures or perhaps he just wants someone to blame. Either way, his opinion - rightly or wrongly - is what determines the fate of the Rove machine.
I am also told that Rove's assets - people installed in positions of power - will fall one by one starting in October and the old man will at that point pull the proverbial plug. These assets, I am told, include a few judges, attorneys, FBI officials (in particular, a Northeastern person), and so forth. You know who you are, but soon, the public will as well. I don't know if these people were bribed or what the allegations against them will be. I was not given many details for obvious reasons.
Just a caveat here too. This is a single source, which is why I am not writing a news article about it and instead am sharing this with you on my blog. That said, this person is incredibly close to the situation, and incredibly familiar with those involved. If things were different - and I was free to name names - then you would be a bit taken a back by who this is (must be my absolute stance against the Soviets during the cold war that has won me such friends). So although this is a single source and although I ask that you read the information I have provided fully aware that this is a single source, I also want to make sure you understand that this is no low-level foot-soldier.
So back to Rove. What will this mean? It will mean that Karl will be left to his own devices, with many-a-scandal coming at him and without the benefit of the Bush family - no matter what W says. It will also mean that as his loyalists start falling, they will likely flip against him.
It might not be a bad idea for Rove to actually work with Congress now, in advance of this upheaval, if he wants to try and politically survive what is coming. Somehow, I doubt his arrogance will give way to reason, which is fine by me as I always enjoy a good show.

NHS: Drug linked admissions to mental hospitals double in 10 years· Men's risk of falling ill is twice that of women
· Charity warns that earlier intervention is needed
John Carvel, social affairs editor
The Guardian, Friday August 15 2008 Article history
The number of people admitted to hospital in England with mental illnesses linked to use of illegal drugs has doubled over the past decade, official figures revealed yesterday.
The NHS Information Centre said 38,170 adults and children were admitted in 2006-7 with drug-related mental and behavioural disorders, an increase of 101% since 1996-97.
Admissions of people under 35 peaked in 2003-4, but there was a continuing surge in mental disorders affecting middle-aged users. In the 35-44 age group, admissions rose by 259% over the decade to a record 10,941 in 2006-7. Among those aged 45-54, there was a 256% increase to 3,158.

Question: Is there any measureable correlation between these admissions and the drugs surging out of Afghanistan?
Smarter than he acts
WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Ted Stevens accused the Justice Department of trampling on the independence of Congress, arguing Thursday that the corruption case against him should be thrown out.
That legal argument will test the limits of a court ruling that prosecutors fear could limit their ability to investigate corruption on Capitol Hill. Stevens said FBI agents went too far when they questioned his Senate aides.
Stevens said the FBI's long-running corruption probe intruded on his Senate affairs. He cited the Constitution's speech-or-debate clause, which prohibits the executive branch from using its law enforcement authority to interfere with legislative business.
The Justice Department predicted this would happen after an appeals court ruled last year that the FBI violated the constitution by searching the Capitol Hill office of Rep. William Jefferson, D-La. The Supreme Court refused to reconsider the case and prosecutors said lawmakers had already begun arguing that their aides could not be questioned.
In court documents Thursday, Stevens also argued that it's up to the Senate, not the Justice Department, to enforce Senate rules about financial disclosure. If the Senate feels he violated its rules, it can punish him, he said.

Human Rights Watch cites violence on all sides of Georgian conflict
Posted: 07:34 PM ET
(CNN) — Forces for both Georgia and Russia appear to have caused civilian casualties through indiscriminate attacks in the towns of Gori and Tskhinvali, Human Rights Watch said Thursday.
“Russian, Georgian and South Ossetian forces all have an obligation under international humanitarian law to protect civilians from attack,” said Holly Cartner, Europe and Central Asia director at the non-governmental organization. “The latest information on civilian casualties in Gori, Tskhinvali and surrounding areas calls into question whether the forces are respecting that obligation.”
An attack Tuesday morning on Gori’s main square killed and wounded dozens of civilians, the organization said.

Gorbachev: Georgia started conflict in S. Ossetia
Posted: 06:50 PM ET
(CNN) — “There is no doubt” that the conflict raging in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia was started by Georgia, although Georgian leaders are blaming Russia, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev said Thursday.
“The response required the movement of additional forces into South Ossetia because Tskhinvali was attacked by a powerful force,” he told CNN’s “Larry King Live.” “This was the use of sophisticated weapons against a small town, against a sleeping people. This was a barbaric assault.”
Last week, Georgia said it launched an operation into South Ossetia after its unilateral cease-fire was met with artillery fire from separatists that killed 10 people, including peacekeepers and civilians. It accused Russia, which also has peacekeepers in the region, of backing the separatists. Hours later, the Russian news agency Interfax reported that Russian authorities said 10 Russian peacekeepers had been killed and 30 wounded when attacked by Georgians.

Turkey pulls out of deal to buy Iranian gas under pressure from US
Turkey delivered a humiliating snub to Iran's visiting president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, yesterday by backing out of a lucrative energy deal under pressure from the US government, which feared it would enhance Iranian nuclear ambitions
Turkish officials had earlier cited Iranian pricing and investment conditions as a reason for stalling. However, that appeared to be a smokescreen aimed at disguising Turkish deference to American demands. A western diplomatic source told the Guardian that Turkey had pledged not to sign any major energy deals with Iran in return for Washington's blessing for Ahmadinejad's visit after Bush administration officials privately criticised it.
"Steve Hadley (the US national security adviser) voiced objections to Ahmadinejad's trip when he visited Ankara a month ago," the source said.

Cease-fire loophole allows
Cease-fire loophole allows Russian powers inside Georgia
Posted: 06:42 PM ET
From CNN State Department Producer Elise Labott and Correspondent Zain Verjee
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is taking a cease-fire document to Tbilisi that allows Russia to keep some troops in Georgia, a senior State Department official familiar with the negotiations told CNN.
But the official stressed that the Russian mandate would be limited in scope.
The official spoke to CNN after a meeting with French President Sarkozy, who brokered an cease-fire agreement to end hostilities between Russia and Georgia. He spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not final. The six-point plan calls for both sides to end the fighting, promise not to use military force and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Republicans' Fortunes Falling In Nevada
Washington Post: A Confluence Of Problems Has Left A Once-Potent State Party In Tatters
The scandal-plagued Republican governor is so politically toxic that few of his party's prominent candidates will be seen with him. The GOP's most powerful state senator survived a tough primary after 36 years of never even facing a credible opponent. And the party may quickly be losing its grip on a state that could be critical to the outcome of the presidential election.
If Republicans are hurting nationally this election year, there may be few places where the pain is quite as acute, or has arrived as quickly, as Nevada, where a confluence of problems has left a once-potent state party in tatters. Just two years ago, Republicans occupied all six statewide constitutional offices. Today, they hold only the posts of governor and lieutenant governor.
Democrats now enjoy a 60,000-voter registration edge in a state where the parties were virtually tied a year ago. The state GOP raised less than one-third of the $1.3 million the Nevada Democratic Party's central committee took in during the first half of 2008. And the Republicans who hold two of the state's three U.S. House seats are in danger of losing them.
A Republican primary race between the state Senate majority leader, Bill Raggio, and a former assemblywoman was emblematic of the trend. Raggio, 81, won a six-point victory on Tuesday after being forced to campaign actively for the first time since his initial race in 1972. His opponent is a hero of Nevada's hard-core fiscal and social conservatives angered by Raggio's compromises on such things as a large 2003 tax increase.

Rule by fear or rule by law?
by Lewis Seiler,Dan Hamburg
Monday, February 4, 2008
"The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgment of his peers, is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist."
- Winston Churchill, Nov. 21, 1943
Since 9/11, and seemingly without the notice of most Americans, the federal government has assumed the authority to institute martial law, arrest a wide swath of dissidents (citizen and noncitizen alike), and detain people without legal or constitutional recourse in the event of "an emergency influx of immigrants in the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs."
Beginning in 1999, the government has entered into a series of single-bid contracts with Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) to build detention camps at undisclosed locations within the United States. The government has also contracted with several companies to build thousands of railcars, some reportedly equipped with shackles, ostensibly to transport detainees.
According to diplomat and author Peter Dale Scott, the KBR contract is part of a Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of "all removable aliens" and "potential terrorists."
Fraud-busters such as Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles, have complained about these contracts, saying that more taxpayer dollars should not go to taxpayer-gouging Halliburton. But the real question is: What kind of "new programs" require the construction and refurbishment of detention facilities in nearly every state of the union with the capacity to house perhaps millions of people?
Sect. 1042 of the 2007 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), "Use of the Armed Forces in Major Public Emergencies," gives the executive the power to invoke martial law. For the first time in more than a century, the president is now authorized to use the military in response to "a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, a terrorist attack or any other condition in which the President determines that domestic violence has occurred to the extent that state officials cannot maintain public order."
The Military Commissions Act of 2006, rammed through Congress just before the 2006 midterm elections, allows for the indefinite imprisonment of anyone who donates money to a charity that turns up on a list of "terrorist" organizations, or who speaks out against the government's policies. The law calls for secret trials for citizens and noncitizens alike.
Also in 2007, the White House quietly issued National Security Presidential Directive 51 (NSPD-51), to ensure "continuity of government" in the event of what the document vaguely calls a "catastrophic emergency." Should the president determine that such an emergency has occurred, he and he alone is empowered to do whatever he deems necessary to ensure "continuity of government." This could include everything from canceling elections to suspending the Constitution to launching a nuclear attack. Congress has yet to hold a single hearing on NSPD-51...

Repression engineered -- Part 2
Rule by Fear or Rule by Law continued--
U.S. Rep. Jane Harman, D-Venice (Los Angeles County) has come up with a new way to expand the domestic "war on terror." Her Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 (HR1955), which passed the House by the lopsided vote of 404-6, would set up a commission to "examine and report upon the facts and causes" of so-called violent radicalism and extremist ideology, then make legislative recommendations on combatting it.
According to commentary in the Baltimore Sun, Rep. Harman and her colleagues from both sides of the aisle believe the country faces a native brand of terrorism, and needs a commission with sweeping investigative power to combat it.
A clue as to where Harman's commission might be aiming is the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, a law that labels those who "engage in sit-ins, civil disobedience, trespass, or any other crime in the name of animal rights" as terrorists. Other groups in the crosshairs could be anti-abortion protesters, anti-tax agitators, immigration activists, environmentalists, peace demonstrators, Second Amendment rights supporters ... the list goes on and on. According to author Naomi Wolf, the National Counterterrorism Center holds the names of roughly 775,000 "terror suspects" with the number increasing by 20,000 per month.
What could the government be contemplating that leads it to make contingency plans to detain without recourse millions of its own citizens?
The Constitution does not allow the executive to have unchecked power under any circumstances. The people must not allow the president to use the war on terrorism to rule by fear instead of by law.

Georgia War: A Neocon
Georgia War: A Neocon Election Ploy? By Robert Scheer
Is it possible that this time the October surprise was tried in August, and that the garbage issue of brave little Georgia struggling for its survival from the grasp of the Russian bear was stoked to influence the US presidential election?
Before you dismiss that possibility, consider the role of one Randy Scheunemann, for four years a paid lobbyist for the Georgian government, ending his official lobbying connection only in March, months after he became Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain's senior foreign policy adviser.
Previously, Scheunemann was best known as one of the neoconservatives who engineered the war in Iraq when he was a director of the Project for a New American Century. It was Scheunemann who, after working on the McCain 2000 presidential campaign, headed the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, which championed the US Iraq invasion.
There are telltale signs that he played a similar role in the recent Georgia flare-up. How else to explain the folly of his close friend and former employer, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, in ordering an invasion of the breakaway region of South Ossetia, which clearly was expected to produce a Russian counter-reaction. It is inconceivable that Saakashvili would have triggered this dangerous escalation without some assurance from influential Americans he trusted, like Scheunemann, that the United States would have his back. Scheunemann long guided McCain in these matters, even before he was officially running foreign policy for McCain's presidential campaign.
In 2005, while registered as a paid lobbyist for Georgia, Scheunemann worked with McCain to draft a congressional resolution pushing for Georgia's membership in NATO. A year later, while still on the Georgian payroll, Scheunemann accompanied McCain on a trip to that country, where they met with Saakashvili and supported his bellicose views toward Russia's Vladimir Putin.
Scheunemann is at the center of the neoconservative cabal that has come to dominate the Republican candidate's foreign policy stance in a replay of the run-up to the war against Iraq. These folks are always looking for a foreign enemy on which to base a new cold war, and with the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime, it was Putin's Russia that came increasingly to fit the bill.
Yes, it sounds diabolical, but that may be the most accurate way to assess the designs of the McCain campaign in matters of war and peace. There is every indication that the candidate's demonization of Putin is an even grander plan than the previous use of Hussein to fuel American militarism with the fearsome enemy that it desperately needs.

'Shadow Government' acknowledged in Washington Post
Bush Changes Continuity Plan
Administration, Not DHS, Would Run Shadow Government
By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 10, 2007; Page A12
President Bush issued a formal national security directive yesterday ordering agencies to prepare contingency plans for a surprise, "decapitating" attack on the federal government, and assigned responsibility for coordinating such plans to the White House.
The prospect of a nuclear bomb being detonated in Washington without warning, whether smuggled in by terrorists or a foreign government, has been cited by many security analysts as a rising concern since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The order makes explicit that the focus of federal worst-case planning involves a covert nuclear attack against the nation's capital, in contrast with Cold War assumptions that a long-range strike would be preceded by a notice of minutes or hours as missiles were fueled and launched.
"As a result of the asymmetric threat environment, adequate warning of potential emergencies that could pose a significant risk to the homeland might not be available, and therefore all continuity planning shall be based on the assumption that no such warning will be received," states the 72-paragraph order. It is designated National Security Presidential Directive 51 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 20.
The statement added, "Emphasis will be placed upon geographic dispersion of leadership, staff, and infrastructure in order to increase survivability and maintain uninterrupted Government Functions."
After the 2001 attacks, Bush assigned about 100 senior civilian managers to rotate secretly to locations outside of Washington for weeks or months at a time to ensure the nation's survival, a shadow government that evolved based on long-standing "continuity of operations plans."
Since then, other agencies including the Pentagon, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the CIA have taken steps to relocate facilities or key functions outside of Washington for their own reasons, citing factors such as economics or the importance of avoiding Beltway "group-think."
Norman J. Ornstein, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and an adviser to an independent Continuity of Government Commission, said the order "is a more explicit embrace of what has been since 9/11 an implicit but fairly clear set of assumptions."
He added, "My frustration is that those assumptions have not gripped the Congress in the same way."
Other former Bush administration officials said the directive formalizes a shift of authority away from the Department of Homeland Security to the White House.
Under an executive order dating to the Reagan administration, responsibility for coordinating, implementing and exercising such plans was originally charged to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and later DHS, the Congressional Research Service noted in a 2005 report on a pending DHS reorganization.
The new directive gives the job of coordinating policy to the president's assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism -- Frances Fragos Townsend, who will assume the title of national continuity coordinator -- in consultation with Bush's national security adviser, Stephen J. Hadley, with the support of the White House's Homeland Security Council staff. Townsend is to produce an implementation plan within 90 days. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will continue to coordinate operations and activities, the directive said.

An Iraq War veteran who lost both legs when a rocket-propelled grenade hit her Black Hawk helicopter will lead a tribute to service members and veterans on the third night of the Democratic National Convention.
Tammy Duckworth, who lost a bid for Congress in Barack Obama's home state of Illinois in 2006, has become a well known advocate for veterans and military families.
The focus Aug. 27 will be honoring the military and a "new, tough foreign policy approach that is neither Republican nor Democratic," the Obama campaign said.
The theme is "Securing America's Future." The headline prime-time speaker will be the vice presidential nominee, who has not yet been named.

Senators say US report on oil prices is flawed
WASHINGTON: Four Democratic senators on Thursday asked for an investigation into a U.S. government report on oil prices that the lawmakers said was based on flawed information.
In a letter to the inspector general of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the senators criticized an interim study released last month that said fundamental supply-and-demand factors were to blame for the recent run-up in oil prices. The senators said the study, which played down the role of speculation, was based on inaccurate data.
They also questioned the timing of its release. The report was issued a few days before the Senate voted not to move forward on legislation that would have required the commission to set limits on trading in oil markets by investors and speculators.
"The report, which specifically addressed speculation, appears to have been created and released to influence that Senate vote, which would be highly improper, in our view," wrote Sens. Ron Wyden, Byron Dorgan, Maria Cantwell and Bill Nelson.
Democrats have pushed the legislation designed to curb speculation, saying the rapid increases in oil prices have coincided with big rises in trading on oil future markets. Many Republicans have argued that high gasoline prices are caused by the basic economics of supply not meeting demand.

Bigfoot!!!

-- A policeman and a former corrections officer say that on Friday, they will unveil evidence of what they claim is their biggest capture ever: the body of Bigfoot.
The thawed body of a creature reputed to be Bigfoot reportedly weighs more than 500 pounds.

Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, a pair of Bigfoot-hunting hobbyists from north Georgia, say they found the creature's body in a wooded area and spotted several similar creatures that were still alive.
The carcass of the furry half-man, half-ape is 7 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs more than 500 pounds, they say. However, the two are not disclosing the exact location of their discovery in order to protect the remaining creatures.
Tom Nelson, chairman of the biology department at North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, said he's "pretty skeptical" the world will feast its eyes on a new species Friday.
"That would certainly rock mammalogy," joked Nelson, who specializes in the study of mammals. "I see a research grant in my future."
Whitton and Dyer plan to unveil what they say is DNA and photo evidence of the discovery in Palo Alto, California, in conjunction with a group called Searching for Bigfoot Inc.

Bush Doctrine Enabled Putin's Georgia War
President Bush's "howls of outrage" at Russia's unilateral action and calls for regime change in the Caucasus ring more than a little hollow to Juan Cole of Salon, who remembers all too well a similar situation not long ago. "Vladimir Putin's invoking Bush's Iraq adventure points directly to the way in which Bush has enabled other world powers to act impulsively," Cole writes.
The Bush administration's defiance of international law was "implicitly predicated on the notion that all challengers would be weaker than the United States throughout the 21st century," Cole writes. With Russia and China in the ascendancy, he contends, Bush and Dick Cheney are "getting a glimpse of a multipolar world in which other powers can adopt their modus operandi with impunity."

Biden and Bayh are speaking Wednesday night.
(CNN) — The two senators widely believed to be at the top of Barack Obama's shortlist for VP have been given prime-time speaking slots at the Democratic convention Wednesday night — the very same night the vice presidential candidate is slated to speak.
According to the Democratic National Convention Committee, both Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden will deliver speeches on national security during the marquee night — the same evening former President Bill Clinton is also scheduled to speak.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar will also speak Wednesday evening, according to the convention committee.
But Biden and Bayh's appearance especially is sure to heighten speculation one of the two senators will ultimately be named Obama's running mate. The announcement also comes the same day Biden hit the campaign trail for the Illinois senator, accepting an endorsement on his behalf from the International Association of Firefighters in Las Vegas.

Presumptuous Maverick

Yglesias says:
[I]t looks like Mikhail Saakashvili thought it meant something when John McCain proclaimed America and Georgia to be identical:
“Yesterday, I heard Sen. McCain say, ‘We are all Georgians now,’” Saakashvili said on CNN’s American Morning. “Well, very nice, you know, very cheering for us to hear that, but OK, it’s time to pass from this. From words to deeds.”
Bush came through for McCain and Saakashvili:
The United States of America stands with the democratically elected government of Georgia...I have directed a series of steps to demonstrate our solidarity with the Georgian people and bring about a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
You'll recall that both Bush and Obama were far more circumspect in their language when this thing first started. McCain came charging out of the gate with chest thumping bellicosity and soon Bush (and Obama, to a lesser degree) followed. Events certainly changed perspectives, but there's no doubt who is the leader of American foreign policy on this matter --- Senator John McCain.
Now, Russia too has called the US on its loose talk:
Russia accused the United States on Wednesday of playing a dangerous game in the Caucasus by backing Georgia and denied Moscow was not doing enough to prevent looting.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Washington had to choose between partnership with Moscow and the Georgian leadership which he described as a "virtual project".
"We understand that this current Georgian leadership is a special project of the United States, but one day the United States will have to choose between defending its prestige over a virtual project or real partnership which requires joint action," Lavrov told reporters.
John McCain was the first one out of the box with the evil empire crap and it very well may have led the Bush administration to follow for political --- and maybe personal -- reasons. (Bush is being dinged by the wingnuts for failing to show enough machismo.)
I remember reading some stuff recently about how it was unseemly for Barack Obama to go on an overseas trip. Why, he was acting like he'd already won! Now, we have McCain making statements on television that are having an actual impact on an international crisis, and which might even be illegal, and I'm hearing gasbags say he looks very presidential. It looks more like presumptuousness to me.
But then a grizzled old veteran's presumptuousness isn't the same as a young, African American upstart's, is it?

As I blogged earlier this week, my mother is now supporting Ralph Nader. (She was a very firm Hillary supporter and had decided previously that hse just wouldn't vote.) I really think there's a movement towards Nader's campaign right now. And there's movement in his campaign. Ralph's campaign office is open in Denver and C.I. includes a report on that (via Jess) so I'll just note this here: "Those interested in assisting can e-mail Junue Millan at junue@votenader.org as well as call the office (303) 832-2509 or walk in." Jess said Junue is a very nice guy and very patient and professional on the phone. If you're able to volunteer in any way, please contact him. Maybe you're supporting Nader and that's great. Or maybe you're undecided or supporting Cynthia McKinney or Bob Barr? If so, you should still consider helping out with the Super Rally because it is about the issues, the real ones, and it is about busting the two-party control of the debates.
This is from Team Nader:
This Man Won’t Be Swift Boated
The Obama campaign releases a 41-page, point-by-point rebuttal of Corsi’s new Swift-Boat-style book about the Senator.
“Once again, bigoted fringe author Jerome Corsi is trying to make money off of an election, spinning garbage as journalism and relying on the right-wing echo chamber to pump up sales.”
Read the response– called “Unfit for Publication”– here. (PDF)
Campaign also plans to dig into the author’s past statements, increase surrogate action against the book, and step up pressure on high-level media executives for equal time to rebut charges.

McCain campaign throws
McCain campaign throws Social Security’s birthday cake in the trash.
In honor of the 73rd anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt’s signing of the Social Security Act, the New Mexico Democratic Party attempted to sing “Happy 73rd Birthday to Social Security” outside of a McCain campaign office, “only to have the birthday cake thrown in the trash by the campaign”:
While McCain supporters screamed, “Obama sleeps with a Teddy Bear and a night light,” staffers approached the Democratic group, yelling, took the 20 inch sheet cake that said “Happy Birthday Social Security” and threw it away.
Conchita Cruz, the press secretary for the Democratic Party of New Mexico, called the cake trashing a “perfect metaphor” for McCain’s approach to Social Security policy.

Dear Friend:
I have been requested by the regional members Federal Reserve of the USA to contact you for assistance in resolving a matter. The Federal Reserve of the USA has recently concluded a large number of contracts for credit derivative investment vehicles "CDIV" in the Wall Street region of the USA. The contracts have immediately produced moneys equaling US$40,000,000. The Federal Reserve of the USA is desirous of CDIV in other parts of the world, however, because of certain regulations of the USA Government, it is unable to move these funds to another region.
Your assistance is requested as a non-USA citizen to assist the Federal Reserve of the USA, and also the investment bank community of Wall Street USA, in moving these funds out of USA. If the funds can be transferred to your name, in your Nigerian account, then you can forward the funds as directed by the Federal Reserve of USA. In exchange for your accommodating services, the Federal Reserve of USA would agree to allow you to retain 10%, or Nigerian $4 million of this amount.
However, to be a legitimate transferee of these moneys according to USA law, you must presently be a depositor of at least $100,000 in a USA bank which is regulated by the Central Bank of USA.
If it will be possible for you to assist us, we would be most grateful. We suggest that you meet with us in person in New York, NY USA, and that during your visit I introduce you to the representatives of the Wall Street USA, as well as with certain officials of the Central Bank of USA.
Please call me at your earliest convenience at 18-555-1234. Time is of the essence in this matter; very quickly the USA Government will realize that the Central Bank is maintaining this amount on deposit, and attempt to levy certain depository taxes on it.
