Las Vegas Sun:
The veterans, at Bally’s for their national convention, gave [McCain] a tepid reception... Duke Hendershot, a double amputee retired Marine who served in Vietnam, supported McCain’s run for president in 2000 but is undecided this year. “John just isn’t the same as he used to be. He’s not his own man,” said Hendershot, who lives in San Antonio, Texas. “A lot of that has to do with how he’s wanted this job so bad for so long that he’s tied himself to President Bush…” Hendershot also criticized McCain for taking swipes at Obama in his speech. “He should have been talking about veterans issues, not his opponent,” he said. By contrast, he praised Obama for keeping his remarks tightly focused on veterans.

This is one of the things I asked Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz about a few weeks ago, the linkage between the weak dollar and oil prices. Stiglitz says that the greatest impact is that we Americans buy oil on the international market, and we use dollars - weak dollars - to do it. That means that if our dollar only buys half as much as it did before, then we have to pay a lot more to get the same amount of oil at the same price. So the weak dollar isn't just forcing me to avoid $8 pints of Ben & Jerry's in Paris, it's raising the price you pay for gas at the pump. It's also raising the price you pay for almost everything you buy at Target and in everything other store that has goods made in China, or anywhere else abroad. Check out how many things are made in China, the next time you go the store. Once you realize that probably 90% of the things you check are in fact from China, then think about the fact the store had to buy those things with dollars that were only worth half their normal value, thanks to George Bush, John McCain and the Republicans. Yes, John McCain will tell you that a weak dollar helps American exporters. Well last time I checked, nobody I knew was an American exporter. For the rest of us, for most of us, we're getting creamed by the Republican party's weak-dollar tax on practically everything we buy. (Oh, and the high price of oil is also increasing the price of every good or service you buy that in any way is dependent on gasoline to transport that good or service - that'd be pretty much everything from your plumber to the tomatoes in the store.)

Chasing after jbenet and Annette~~~~~~~~[pant,pant]

Is the Edwards' affair a diversion?

YES, it IS a diversion. I agree.

That's PRECISELY WHY it must be tracked down.

Because a diversion that is

a) purposely given media time or
b) PURPOSELY ENGINEERED to divert

is the result of a PLOT by a number of individuals and possibly institutions!

We NEED to start exposing the diversions for what they are, or they will never cease to be used to UNDERMINE sane politics, sane setting of public/government priorities.

Anyway, it's my view that it's a necessity that some portion of our numerous millions of citizens should be devoting some time to get to the SUBTEXT and the ROOTS and the MINUTIA of how these things happen.

Don't forget in Bill Clinton L'Affaire Lewinsky that Monica Lewinsky's phone calls were tape-recorded by -- in essence -- a 'double agent' by the name of LINDA TRIPP!!! That is, a certain aspect of the scandal was engineered via entrapment (of Lewinsky) by the Culture Warmongers.

This looks interesting to me because it might mean there could have been a way to encourage/entice/blackmail Rielle Hunter into being a party to an entrapment or willingly publicizing an affair: Hunter was in debt and had some problems with the law (not unlike the odd history of the so-called therapist in the Bruce Ivins' character assassination). Putting individuals like these women on the spot and threatening them with a hard time for their personal missteps and failures unless they help with entrapment or smear is at least a scenario that works well in fiction, and since when has fiction not been a source of ideas for the Bush Administration and its shadowy institutions (remember how the BushThugs were inspired to use the TV show '24' as inspiration for the Bush Torture Technique!). Some few items if true could be used:
http://webofdeception.com/#andrewyoung

Anyway, I don't know if this goes anywhere past sloppy horniness; but as in the L'Affaire Lewinsky, maybe it does.

LOST SOVEREIGNITY OIL-RICH

LOST SOVEREIGNITY
OIL-RICH FUND EYEING FORECLOSED US HOMES
By TERI BUHL

There's a new land grab starting in America.

Foreign money, which up to now has focused its attention on investing in iconic commercial real estate - like Barneys New York and the Chrysler Building - is now moving to scoop up tens of thousands of discounted foreclosed homes across the country.

One sovereign fund, said to have earmarked $29 billion to purchase foreclosed residential real estate, recently hired a West Coast mortgage broker and is starting to search for bargains, The Post has learned.

The search, which is being carried out, in part, by Field Check Group mortgage consultant Mark Hanson, who was retained by the broker, Steve Iversen, is concentrating on single- and multi-family REO (real estate owned) homes, or homes that have already been taken over by the mortgagee.

Neither Iversen nor Hanson would disclose the name of the client, but sources told The Post it's a sovereign fund.

The unidentified fund joins individual US investors, hedge funds and Wall Street banks in kicking the tires of REO homes, which have fallen in value so much that they are now tempting investments.

A sovereign fund would have two distinct advantages over other investors - the depressed value of the US dollar makes the homes a bargain, and sovereign funds have deeper pockets.

The sovereign fund of Abu Dhabi, for example, has a reported $875 billion in assets, while Norway has $391 billion, Singapore has $303 billion and Kuwait has $264 billion in their sovereign funds, which are funded by proceeds from oil sales.

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is expected to announce next month what type of US distressed assets they will be investing in and real estate is at the top of the list, according to a report in Financial Times last week.

ADIA did not respond to an e-mail question about REO investments.

So far, prices on bulk sales of REO properties vary based on location and are selling from 60 cents to 80 cents on the dollar. Hanson started out offering 40 cents on the dollar for about $2.5 billion worth of California properties owned by IndyMac and Washington Mutual but was turned down. The banks refused to comment.

Obama signs up lawyers

Obama general counsel Bob Bauer emails lawyers and law students that the campaign is setting up an "unprecedented" new "voter protection" program -- a standard feature of Democratic campaigns, but given the general enthusiasm for Obama, and the specific enthusiasm (according to my anecdotal sense) among legal types, probably on a very large scale.

Bauer writes:

In 2004, those with legal expertise -- people like you -- were critical to the voter protection effort.

Lawyers and legal professionals made sure that registered voters made it on the rolls and were able to vote. They made sure that ballots were available and polls stayed open. And they helped reassure voters that they would not be intimidated.

Despite our stepped-up efforts, problems persisted -- including deceptive flyers, unnecessary lines, inadequate ballot supplies, and problems with voting machines.

In a year that will likely see unprecedented turnout, we can't afford to let our guard down. The stakes could not be higher. This election has to be different.

That's why the Obama Voter Protection Program has already launched, earlier than ever before, and will be the most comprehensive voter protection program in our nation's history, with counsel in 50 states and a vote protection team on the ground now.

Opec income hits record as

Opec income hits record as oil prices soar
By Javier Blas in London, Krishna Guha in Washington and Andrew England in Abu Dhabi

Published: August 10 2008 23:30 | Last updated: August 10 2008 23:30

Opec nations earned as much in the first half of this year as they did in the whole of 2007 – thanks both to record oil prices and record production – triggering a big increase in its spending.

Members of the Saudi Arabia-led oil exporters’ cartel took home $645bn (£335bn, €430bn) between January and June, just below the record $671bn they earned last year, according to the US department of energy.

At the current pace, Opec nations would earn about $1,245bn this year, a record.

The recent 20 per cent drop in oil prices below $120 a barrel is unlikely to damp the earnings significantly, as higher output will offset the impact.

Industry estimates suggest that Opec production in July hit a record 32.6m b/d. The current oil price, at $116.53 a barrel, is still higher than the first half of the year’s average: $111.1 a barrel.

The flood of petrodollars has boosted Opec’s overseas spending, with imports rising up to 40 per cent from last year’s level.

Binky Chadha, of Deutsche Bank in New York, said that Asian emerging markets were now the primary beneficiaries of oil exporters’ rising trade expenditure, followed by the euro area.

The US, meanwhile, was losing some of its market share.

“Although oil prices have been increasing, they [Asian emerging markets] have seen an increasing offset in terms of rising exports to the oil exporters,” he said.

China’s share of oil exporters’ spending has risen to 11 per cent, from 4 per cent in 1999, mostly at the expense of the US, where the share of spending has fallen to 7.5 per cent from 12 per cent.

Opec officials believe that the cartel’s overseas spending plus sovereign wealth fund investments in troubled western banks has helped to support global economic growth

The oil boom is being felt in the Gulf perhaps more than anywhere else and is the driver behind a swathe of multi-billion dollar mega-projects throughout the region.

China to overtake US as

China to overtake US as largest manufacturer
By Peter Marsh in London

Published: August 10 2008 22:37 | Last updated: August 10 2008 22:37

China is set to overtake the US next year as the world’s largest producer of manufactured goods, four years earlier than expected, as a result of the rapidly weakening US economy.

The great leap is revealed in forecasts for the Financial Times by Global Insight, a US economics consultancy. According to the estimates, next year China will account for 17 per cent of manufacturing value-added output of $11,783bn and the US will make 16 per cent.

Last year the US was still easily in the top slot and accounted for a fifth of the total. China was second with 13.2 per cent.

John Engler, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, a Washington-based trade group, played down the effect of the projections. It was “inevitable” that China would take over on account of its size, he said. “This should be a wholesome development for the US, for it promises both political stability for the world’s largest country and continuing opportunities for the US to export to, and invest in, the world’s fastest-growing economy.”

As recently as last year, Global Insight economists predicted that the US would retain the top position until 2013, but a large downward revision in likely output this year and next is expected to cause the US to slip more quickly than had been expected.

I've been thinking about this all day (because I haven't been filling my mind with M$M drivel) and while I have to admit the country has fallen into a fascist system, we are not yet a fascist state. I haven't boned up on the whole fascist era the Spaniards suffered for all those years, but they came out of it with a new awareness. We will too.

The rich pricks fucked it up.

The poor and middle class will take it back.

And when we do, we'll have a democratic system closer to what the founding fathers envisioned and not what the monied interests commandeered.

There are many variables yet to be realized so I can't say much more. I don't have religious faith, but I do have faith in humanity. There's just too many good people in the world. That's all I know.

Taunting the Bear

The hostilities between Russia and Georgia that erupted on Friday over the breakaway province of South Ossetia look, in retrospect, almost absurdly over-determined. For years, the Russians have claimed that Georgia's president, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been preparing to retake the disputed regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and have warned that they would use force to block such a bid. Saakashvili, for his part, describes today's Russia as a belligerent power ruthlessly pressing at its borders, implacably hostile to democratic neighbors like Georgia and Ukraine. He has thrown in his lot with the West, and has campaigned ardently for membership in NATO. Vladimir Putin, Russia's former president and current prime minister, has said Russia could never accept a NATO presence in the Caucasus.

The border between Georgia and Russia, in short, has been the driest of tinder; the only question was where the fire would start.

Arnold's playing games with California's water --

Schwarzenegger is playing mean games (Mean Games -- hmmmm, sounds like an action movie title), very mean games with California's limited water. Arnold's not the first. But the last governor to do so, Republican Duekmajian (if I remember correctly), was alot of years ago. But I guess Arnold and Friends feel enough time has elapsed where Californians do not remember the Peripheral Canal plans to divert Northern California for the thirsty golf courses, lawns and swimming pools of Southern California...

http://www.truthout.org/article/the-schwarzenegger-contradiction

...
Schwarzenegger, the worst ever governor for fish and wildlife in California history, is apparently one of the most ruthless in the way he treats the state's workers, including Department of Fish and Game (DFG) staff. An S.S. officer's son who became a body builder and then a Hollywood "action hero," Schwarzenegger apparently wants to run California like a totalitarian state. Agency staff are routinely bullied and those who disagree with his disastrous environmental policies are pressured into resigning.

On Schwarzenegger's watch, Central Valley king salmon have collapsed to the lowest recorded population level due to the governor's zeal in increasing water exports to his buddies in corporate agribusiness. The same increase in water exports is also the key factor in the collapse of three pelagic species - the delta smelt, longfin smelt, juvenile striped bass and threadfin shad - as documented by a team of federal and state scientists.

The same governor who is slashing state workers' salaries, last week spoke at a Capitol rally touting the "benefits" of a $9.3 billion "compromise" water bond sponsored by him and Sen. Dianne Feinstein. The proposal, opposed by a coalition of fishing groups, Indian Tribes, conservation organizations and Delta residents, includes two new dams and a peripheral canal. The bond would build the infrastructure to export even more water out of the Delta, further imperiling collapsing salmon and other fish populations.

I ask Schwarzenegger how he can cut salaries and jobs, due to a budget shortfall of $15.2 billion, while he is campaigning for a proposal that would indebt the state for another $9.3 billion? Is Schwarzenegger out of his mind?

The corporate media, who haven't yet gotten tired of the novelty of having an "action hero" actor as the governor, portray Schwarzenegger as the "green governor," since they are deceived by his detestable grandstanding about "global warming" and "ocean protection." Meanwhile, he presides over the destruction of the largest estuary on the West Coast and California and Oregon salmon fisheries.

Schwarzenegger's bizarre vision of "ocean protection" means allowing corporate water polluters and agribusiness to routinely violate environmental laws, while his administration removes sustainable recreational and commercial fishermen from the water by creating massive "no fishing" zones.

Apparently, Schwarzenegger has the same compassion and consideration for state workers that he has for commercial fishermen, charter boat captains, fishing guides and people employed in the fishing industry, who are being devastated economically by the salmon fishing closures.

http://www.truthout.org/article/follow-this-dime

...

At first it was only a trickle in the basement, a little stream released accidentally by the president's friends at Enron. Before long, though, the levees were failing all over town, and the city was inundated with a muddy torrent of graft.

How are we to dissect a deluge like this one? We might begin by categorizing the earmarks handed out by Congress, sorting the foolish earmarks from the costly earmarks from the earmarks made strictly on a cash basis. We could try a similar approach to government contracting: the no-bid contracts, the no-oversight contracts, the no-experience contracts, the contracts handed out to friends of the vice president. We might consider the shoplifting career of one of the president's former domestic policy advisers or the habitual plagiarism of the president's liaison to the Christian right. And we would certainly have to find some way to parse the extraordinary incompetence of the executive branch, incompetence so fulsome and steady and reliable that at some point Americans stopped being surprised and began simply to count on it, to think of incompetence as the way government works.

But the onrushing flow swamps all taxonomies. Mass firing of federal prosecutors; bribing of newspaper columnists; pallets of shrink-wrapped cash "misplaced" in Iraq; inexperienced kids running the Baghdad stock exchange; the discovery that many of Alaska's leading politicians are apparently on the take - our heads swim. We climb to the rooftop, but we cannot find the heights of irony from which we might laugh off the blend of thug and Pharisee that was Tom DeLay - or dispel the nauseating suspicion, quickly becoming a certainty, that the government of our nation deliberately fibbed us into a pointless, catastrophic war.

Bad Apples All Around

So let us begin on the solid ground of these simple facts: this spectacular episode of misrule has coincided with both the political triumph of conservatism and with the rise of the Washington area to the richest rank of American metropolises. In the period I am describing, gentlemen of the right rolled through the capital like lords of creation. Every spigot was open, and every indulgence slopped out for their gleeful wallowing. All the clichés roared at full, unembarrassed volume: the wines gurgled, the T-bones roasted, the golf courses beckoned, the Learjets zoomed, the contractors' glass buildings sprouted from the earth, and the lobbyists' mansions grew like brick-colonial mushrooms on the hills of northern Virginia.

Lest we forget -- Bush Biased Healthcare - Episodes 1 & 2 & Qs

Episode 1 -- proposed new regulation leaks out

http://www.truthout.org/article/a-new-attack-birth-control

...a proposed new regulation would expand the definition of abortion to include any form of contraception that can work by stopping implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. This can include common birth-control pills, emergency contraception, and the intra-uterine device, or IUD. Doctors who refuse to perform abortions for reasons of personal conscience already are protected by law.

The potential impact of this new rule on the more than 500,000 hospitals, family planning clinics, and medical offices that receive any form of federal funding could be dramatic. The rule could also undercut many state laws - including one in Massachusetts requiring hospitals to provide emergency contraception for rape victims - and laws requiring prescription drug insurance plans to include contraceptives. Massachusetts passed such a law in 2002.

The draft proposed rule highlights the fact that many antiabortion groups also oppose one good method of preventing the unplanned pregnancies that lead to abortions - birth control. At some point in their lives, 98 percent of US women use birth control.

The proposed rule, while claiming to protect the rights of nurses and doctors, would interfere with patients' rights. A woman seeking treatment could be denied birth control and not even be aware that the service was available - only denied to her because of the unexpressed personal beliefs of the practitioner.

Last November, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said gynecologists must provide "accurate and unbiased information" to patients and "have the duty to refer patients in a timely manner to other providers" if the doctors do not want to perform an abortion or prescribe birth control. The US secretary of health and human services, Michael Leavitt, said he thought this statement went too far in forcing doctors to choose between their beliefs and the prospect of professional sanctions.

The administration does not need approval of Congress to put this rule into effect. But about 100 members of the House, including all representatives from this state except Stephen Lynch of South Boston, have signed a letter protesting it. In the Senate, Patty Murray of Washington and Hillary Clinton of New York are leading the opposition. The administration should take heed and drop its ideological attack on contraception.
=================================================

Episode 2 -- Leavitt denial

http://current.com/items/89184998_us_official_says_new_rules_are_not_ant...
...

Under federal law, institutions may not discriminate against individuals who refuse to perform abortions or provide a referral for one. The Health and Human Services Department is considering requiring health care providers and organizations to certify their compliance with the law, but in doing so, lawmakers and several interest groups worried that the administration was attempting to lump contraceptives into its definition of abortion.

Leavitt said that was not his intent.

"An early draft of the regulation found its way into public circulation before it had reached my review," Leavitt said on a personal blog posted on the department's Web site. "It contained words that lead some to conclude my intent is to deal with the subject of contraceptives, somehow defining them as abortion. Not true."

Leavitt said he wanted the regulation to address the legal right that doctors, nurses and others have to practice according to their conscience.

"The department is still contemplating if it will issue a regulation or not," Leavitt said. "If it does, it will be directly focused on the protection of practitioner conscience."

In a letter sent to Leavitt two weeks ago, Planned Parenthood and 56 other organizations urged him to abandon efforts to issue such a rule. The groups said the draft regulation permits people to refuse to provide women with access to contraceptive services and information. Meanwhile, institutions hiring those workers would be unable to do anything to curb those actions.

"This rule permits health care providers to refuse to perform any service they deem morally objectionable, which raises critical questions about access to all health care services," the groups wrote.

Lawmakers also have been active in urging Leavitt to drop the regulation. Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Patty Murray, both Democrats, told Leavitt in a letter the regulation would disrupt state laws securing women's access to birth control and could even undermine laws that ensure rape victims get emergency contraception in hospital emergency rooms.
....
=======================================

Questions -- I have some for Mr. Leavitt et al.

When Leavitt says if the regulation is made "...it will be directly focused on the protection of practitioner conscience", I wonder what does THAT mean?

Will practitioners need to fill out forms related to "conscience" before they are even hired?

Will this process serve as a screening method to limit the hiring of ONLY anti-abortion personnel?

How do anti-abortion (and possibly anti-birth-control) practioners go on record as being the soul expressors "of consciene" on a healthcare/medical staff?

Why use THAT terminology that presupposes their view/opinion is the only view/opinion based on conscience?

WASHINGTON - The Homeland Security Department swept aside evaluations of government experts and named Mississippi — home to powerful U.S. lawmakers with sway over the agency — as a top location for a new $451 million, national laboratory to study some of the world's most virulent biological threats, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press.

Mississippi's lawmakers include the Democratic chairman of the department's oversight committee in the House and the senior Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee, which is expected to approve money to build the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility at one of five sites being considered. The two lawmakers said they were unaware of the Homeland Security evaluation system that scored the Mississippi site so low.

The disclosure is the latest example of what critics assert is the Bush administration's politicizing of government decisions, such as efforts to steer science over global warming at the Environmental Protection Agency and hiring and firing practices at the Justice Department.

"It is very suspicious," said Irwin Goldman of the University of Wisconsin, a leader of the unsuccessful effort to build the lab in Madison. His community's offer was among nine sites rejected even though the government scored it more highly than Mississippi's. "We wondered how everybody else did. It's interesting to know that we came out ahead of one that was short-listed."

The states where locations were eliminated despite earning scores higher than Mississippi include California, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, Texas and Wisconsin.

Serious stuff here, but no apologies necessary?!

http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2008/08/obamas-letters-of-no-apology

...

Recently Obama was asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley if “there’s anything that’s happened in the past 7 1/2 years that the U.S. needs to apologize for in terms of foreign policy?” Obama responded by saying, “No, I don’t believe in the U.S. apologizing. As I said I think the war in Iraq was a mistake. We didn’t keep our eye on the ball in Afghanistan. But, you know, hindsight is 20/20, and I’m much more interested in looking forward rather than looking backwards.” The United States, Obama told Crowley, “remains overwhelmingly a force of good in the world.”1

“SHOT AS THEY RAN”

I would like the Afghan “war”2 enthusiast3 Barack Obama to write a Letter of No Apology to Orifa Ahmed. On October 7, 2001, Orifa’s house in the Afghan village of Bibi Mahru was destroyed by a 500-pound bomb dropped by an American F-16 plane. The explosion killed her husband (a carpet weaver), six of her children and two children, who lived (and died) next door. Away visiting relatives when the bombing occurred, Orifa returned to find pieces of her children’s flesh scattered around the killing site. She received $400 from U.S. authorities to compensate her for her losses.4

I would also like Obama to write a “Letter of No Apology” to Gulam Rasul, a school headmaster in the Afghan town of Khair Khana. On the morning of October 21, 2001, the United States dropped a 500-pound bomb on his house, killing his wife, three of his sons, his sister and her husband, his brother, and his sister-in-law.5

Another “Letter of Apology” should go to Sher Kahn, an old man who lost seven relatives when the United States assaulted the Afghan village of Niazi Qala on December 29, 2001. Here is how the British author and filmmaker John Pilger describes the attack:

The roar of the planes had started at three in the morning, long after everybody had retired for the night. Then the bombs began to fall — 500-pounders leading the way, scooping out the earth and felling a row of houses. According to neighbors watching from a distance, the planes flew three sorties over the village and a helicopter hovered close to the ground, firing flares, then rockets. Women and children were seen running from the houses towards a dried pond, perhaps in search of protection from the gunfire, but were shot as they ran.6

First thought is:

Mississipi -- Land of swamps and mosquitos? What if something that can be mosquito-born gets out of those labs? Is this a good choice?

Second thought:

I thought by now the government would have copied the sets from the great movie "Andromeda Strain" for an underground containment facility. Guess not. They'd rather build these things near residential areas....

Third thought:

Phew. Does that mean the bid in California is dead? I hope so! There seems to be enough of that stuff already in California. (I remember reading materials from a UC campus expansion case wherein was documented neighborhood alarm regarding a neighborhood death from Q-fever which apparently resulted from the lab experimenters transporting their purposely infected animal experimentation subjects (goats or lambs? I can't recall...) out of labs through the regular elevators!)

Fourth thought:

Look out, local Mississippi landfills. New kinds of waste coming your way.

Fifth thought:

Wait now. Isn't this the area that gets those Class Five Hurricanes?

A Dirty Adventure

http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2008/08/a-dirty-adventure-part-1/

...
But are Georgians solely responsible for this dirty adventure? One wonders, especially in light of this passage from the Associated Press article, a fact conveniently omitted from New York Times coverage:

More than 1,000 U.S. Marines and soldiers were at the base last month to teach combat skills to Georgian troops. Georgia has about 2,000 troops in Iraq, making it the third-largest contributor to coalition forces after the U.S. and Britain.

The White House on Friday urged Russia and Georgia to peacefully resolve their dispute over South Ossetia.

“We urge restraint on all sides — that violence would be curtailed and that direct dialogue could ensue in order to help resolve their differences,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.

Curiously, the US is not capable of condemning a Georgian invasion and Guernica like air attack upon Tskhinvali, but then, that would be expecting a lot after US Marines just got done training Georgian forces. Instead, the White House just urges restraint, which is what it usually does when an ally has launched an attack and the other side moves to defend itself.

Mercury in CFL's

There's only a trace in them. Compared to what they contain vs the amount they save from being dumped into the atmosphere by requiring less energy still make them a viable solution in the present time.

..some other information

How do CFLs result in less mercury in the environment compared to traditional light bulbs?
Electricity use is the main source of mercury emissions in the U.S. CFLs use less electricity than incandescent
lights, meaning CFLs reduce the amount of mercury into the environment. As shown in the table below, a 13-watt,
8,000-rated-hour-life CFL (60-watt equivalent; a common light bulb type) will save 376 kWh over its lifetime, thus
avoiding 4.5 mg of mercury. If the bulb goes to a landfill, overall emissions savings would drop a little, to 4.2 mg.

EPA recommends that CFLs are recycled where possible, to maximize mercury savings.

As Edwards saga plays on, - Republican Sex Scandals ( Part 1)

2008

Bruce Barclay, former Cumberland County commissioner, videotaped hundreds of sexual encounters — many with male escorts — using cameras hidden throughout his Monroe Township home.

Matthew Joseph Elliott, former aide to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was convicted of sexual exploitation of a child.

Vito Fossella, the only Republican member of Congress from New York City, admitted to police to having a child out-of-wedlock when stopped for drunk driving.[3]

Robert McKee, Republican delegate from Western Maryland, announced his resignation after authorities seized two computers, videotapes and printed materials from his Hagerstown home in a child pornography investigation. McKee also resigned his position as executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County.

Daniel Dean Thompson, 31, a Utah retailer of "family-friendly" tapes and DVDs (Hollywood films with the "dirty parts" cut out of them), arrested and booked into the Utah County jail on charges of sexual abuse and unlawful sexual activity with a 14-year-old.

Derek Walker, former Eagle Scout and candidate seeking the GOP nomination in a race for north-central Pennsylvania district, was charged with felony burglary and criminal trespass stemming from an encounter last year with an ex-girlfriend, during which he allegedly broke into her home and used his cell phone to videotape her engaged in an intimate moment with another man.

2007

Robert "Bob" Allen, Florida state Rep. Arrested in the afternoon at a Veteran's Memorial Park for solicitation of prostitution from an undercover male officer inside a restroom. According to the papers Bob "offer[ed] to perform oral sex for $20". Bob Later claimed that his offer had something to do with his being afraid of black people.

John David Roy Atchison, Republican prosecutor, was arrested for soliciting sex from a 5-year old girl, then killed himself three weeks later. At the time of his arrest, Atchison was an "assistant U.S. attorney" appointed by President Bush's attorney general.

E. Ozwald Balfour, chairman of the Utah Republican Black Assembly and elected to the Republican State Central Committee in 2007, even though he was awaiting trial on four felony counts of forcible sex abuse dating back to his arrest in February, 2005.

John Bryan, Republican city councilman, killed himself after police began investigating allegations that he had molested three girls, including two of his adopted daughters, ages 12 and 15.

Larry Craig Republican Senator for Idaho, was arrested on July 11, 2007, by plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of lewd behavior in a Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport airport men's room. On August 8 in Hennepin County Municipal Court in Bloomington, Minnesota, Craig entered a guilty plea and paid a $500 fine.[11]. On September 1st, Craig subsequently announced his retirement from the Senate[12]. Five days later, Craig changed his mind, renounced his retirement and began a battle to have his guilty plea overturned.

John R. Curtin, Monroe County state Republican committeeman, was convicted of molesting an underage teenage boy and sentenced to serve six to 18 months in prison.

Richard Curtis, Washington State Rep., resigned from the House after reports of his sexual encounter with a male escort became public.

Donald Fleischman, Brown County, WI, Republican Party Chairman, resigned his post after he was charged with two counts of child enticement, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a child and a single charge of exposing himself to a child.

Larry Dale Floyd, Republican Constable in Denton County, Texas Precinct Two. Arrested for allegedly crossing state lines to have sex with an 8-year old child and was charged with 7 related offenses. Age 62 at time of arrest.

Ted Klaudt, former South Dakota State Rep., found guilty of four counts of second-degree rape of two teenage foster daughters.

Ronald C. Kline, Republican Judge in Orange County, CA, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on his home computer after six years of legal wrangling. In 2002, charged with child molestation and under house arrest on federal charges of possessing child pornography, political analysts still gave him a 50-50 chance of winning the March 5 primary for the Orange County Superior Court seat. He lost the election to a write-in candidate.

Joseph M. McDade, 75, was issued a summons on a charge of exposure of sexual organs, a misdemeanor that carries up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The longtime Pennsylvania Republican congressman who served for 36 years in the House and now works for a Washington lobbying firm, has been accused of exposing his private parts to two women at a beach resort on Sanibel Island.

Patrick Lee McGuire, former former Flagler County Commissioner, surrendered to police after allegedly molesting girls between the ages of 8 and 13.[21]

Jon Matthews, Republican talk show host in Houston, was indicted for indecency with a child, including exposing his genitals to a girl under the age of 17.

Joseph Monteleone Jr., Elyria city councilman, was found guilty of fondling underage girls and asking them, to have sex with him.

Glenn Murphy Jr., chairman of the Clark County Republican Party and president of the Young Republican National Federation, resigned both posts, after the Clark County Sheriff’s Department began investigating Murphy for alleged criminal deviate conduct. A 22-year-old man claimed that Murphy performed an unwanted sex act on him while the man slept in a relative’s Jeffersonville home. During the investigation, a similar accusation from 1998 came to light.

Armando Tebano, Schenectady County Republican Chairman, pleaded guilty to fondling a 14-year-old girl.

David Vittner, junior Senator from Louisiana, became one of the few high-profile politicians to be implicated as a client of "D.C. Madam" Deborah Jeane Palfrey.

what a lovely photo!!

Republican Sex Scandals (part 2)

2006

Steve Aiken, campaign manager for a Republican candidate for Congress in Arizona, former Quakertown, PA, police officer and self-proclaimed reverend, was convicted of having sex with two underage girls.

Louis Beres, chairman of the Christian Coalition of Oregon. 3 of his family members accuse him of molesting them when they were pre-teens. In August 06, Beres confessed.

Howard L. Brooks, Republican legislative aide and adviser to a California assemblyman, was charged with molesting a 12-year old boy and possession of child pornography.

Randall Casseday, Washington Times newspaper executive, pleaded guilty to soliciting sex from a 13-year old girl on the internet.

Larry Corrigan, Republican operative and Director of Operations and Budget at King County Prosecutor's Office, OR, was arrested for soliciting sex from 13-year old girls.

Carey Lee Cramer Political consultant and anti-Kerry ad producer, tried for molesting two young girls, one of whom lived with him, and was 8 yrs old; the other starred in an anti-Kerry commercial. Diary

Mark Foley, Republican Representative, Florida Sixteenth Congressional District. Resigned after trying to solicit sex from male congressional pages via an instant messenger program. The conversations included his asking a sixteen-year-old "stud" whether his penis was erect and requesting that he take out and measure his penis. The cover-up involved Republican House Majority Leader John Boehner, Ohio Eighth Congressional District and Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Illinois Fourteenth District.

Jim Gibbons, then US Rep. and Republican candidate for governor, was accused by a Las Vegas casino cocktail waitress of grabbing her, shoving her against a wall and threatening her after she rebuffed his advances.[34][35] Since elected Governor, Gibbons is under investigation by the FBI on corruption charges and is embroiled in what looks set to become a very messy divorce.

Ted Haggard, was fired as pastor of the New Life Church and resigned from his position as president of the National Association of Evangelicals in November 2006 after a former male prostitute alleged they had a cash-for-sex relationship. The man also said he saw Haggard use methamphetamine. Haggard confessed to undisclosed “sexual immorality” and said he bought meth but didn’t use it.

Don Haidl, Assistant Sheriff of Orange Country, in violation of California's rape shield law, led a smear campaign against the child his son poisoned and then violently gang-raped on videotape, adding up to 24 felony counts. He said that his son "acted accordingly" because the child was a "slut".

Jeff Miller,(R Cleveland), Senate Republican Caucus Chairman in Tennessee and the sponsor of Tennessee’s Marriage Protection act, getting divorced (as of April 2005) because of an affair he was having with an office aid. Miller described the Tennessee Marriage Protection Act as a means of preserving the sanctity of marriage. Pat Buchanan: The Welfare Queen

Sheltered Washington Insider:

Excerpt

Pat has always led a very sheltered upper class life, and has never worked for anyone except the federal government and the media -- while attacking both the whole time. In fact, he lived off the federal payroll even as a kid -- his dad was a government accountant and then managing partner of Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, one of the largest accounting firms in the Washington D.C. area. He earned enough to raise several kids in an affluent neighborhood, with enough left over to buy a Cadillac. Even George Bush was less sheltered than Buchanan -- he at least lived in Texas and China, and worked in the private sector.

Good Morning America

just ran a segment on Edwards infidelity and how it effects the wives. Of course all 3 examples were democrats. Edwards Clinton and Spitzer. Not one Republican. No Vitter, no McCain, no Gingrige!

They did focus on the wives and how they felt after finding out of the infidelity.

Good Morning From East Sederville! 59 degrees-sunny

How's everybody?

ToniD, so happy you're doing fine.

ABC has never been friend of truth. Remember these gems?

(1)An internal ABC Radio Networks memo obtained by Media Matters for America, originally from a listener to The Peter B. Collins Show, indicates that nearly 100 ABC advertisers insist that their commercials be blacked out on Air America Radio affiliates. According to the memo, the advertisers insist that "NONE of their commercials air during AIR AMERICA programming." Among the advertisers listed are Bank of America, Exxon Mobil, Federal Express, General Electric, McDonald's, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, and the U.S. Navy.

(2)In May, when Disney refused to distribute Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" documentary, CEO Michael Eisner said that Disney "didn't want to be in the middle of a politically-oriented film during an election year." But Disney was one of the 2004 election year's leading broadcasters of political propaganda, almost all of it pro-Bush, as its powerful talk radio stations served up hour after hour of right-wing hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham, Matt Drudge, etc.

The Russian military has

The Russian military has expanded its attacks on Georgia, bombing the capital, Tibilisi, and “moving tanks and troops through the separatist enclave of South Ossetia and advancing toward the city of Gori in central Georgia.” The maneuvers “suggest that Russia’s aims in the conflict had gone beyond securing the pro-Russian enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia to weakening the armed forces of Georgia.”

For Bob: Watts On Second?

Submitted by Bob26003 on Mon, 08/11/2008 - 4:31am.
I'm going to buy those energy saving light bulbs...
--------
Here are a few observations based on my experiences with the energy-saver "bulbs."

When you replace a 60 watt incandescent with a 60 watt "equivalent" fluorescent, it does the job so long as you only need light for moving around without stubbing your toe. If you are replacing a 60 watt incandescent in, say, a desk lamp, you will be happier with a 100 watt "equivalent" fluorescent. The 60 watt "equivalent" fluorescent just doesn't cut it for close work like a 60 watt incandescent can. You will still be saving energy and you will not be overloading a "60 watt maximum" lamp fixture because the 100 watt "equivalent" fluorescents only draw 28 watts.

I have noticed some variance in the lumens (brightness) from one energy-saving bulb to the next. If an energy-saver isn't giving you enough light in a specific application, try a different energy-saver of the same wattage in the same fixture. If it is an improvement you can use the original energy-saver in a location where strong lighting isn't as important.

Another variance I have noticed is the time required for an energy-saver to reach full brightness after it is energized. After you install an energy-saver in a given location, give it several minutes to ramp-up to full glow before you decide to swap it for a higher wattage energy-saver (or before you revert to an incandescent out of frustration).

I purchased two packages of energy-savers. One package had three 60 watt equivalent "bulbs" in it and the other had three 100 watt equivalent "bulbs" in it. After a lot of futzing around (and one "bulb" returned to the store when it burned out in less than a week---save your receipts), I have three energy-saving bulbs in permanent service in the three most-often-energized fixtures in my house; one 60 watt "equivalent" and two 100 watt "equivalent."

Hope this anecdotal nonsense helps.

Say what?

This was probably noted yesterday. However, it warrants another post.

Chris Wallace Exposes McCain Lies and Third Bush Term (Warning: Graphic Acts of Journalism Inside)

In his first stunning act of journalism, this morning Chris Wallace called out the McCain campaign on their latest but most egregious (and potentially effective) lies. He began his interview of Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, by playing McCain's scandalously false commercial, which accuses Obama of seeking to raise taxes on the middle class. Of course, Obama's proposed tax cuts for the middle class are almost nine times greater than McCain's, but facts be damned.

Here's Chris Wallace's shocking deviation from the RNC script:

Thanks for shining light on the subject Crank...

I put one outside on my patio. Talk about warmup time. In the winter it can be minutes before it even gets close to it's potential. It bothered me at first but I got used to it..

4 or 5 years ago I got two of those full spectrum lamps they used to advertise all the time in The Nation. I opted for the ones with variable control and love 'em. Neither bulb has burned out yet and I use them every day.

Still neither will keep me awake any longer than old style bulbs when it comes to reading. ;-)

AFL-CIO Takes Up Obama

AFL-CIO Takes Up Obama Camp's Charge Against McCain On Ohio DHL Deal
The AFL-CIO has a new mailer in Ohio blasting John McCain and campaign manager Rick Davis for their role in the DHL deal, which the mailer says has now led to "8,000 Ohio Jobs Lost," an issue that the Obama campaign has vowed to hammer in this big swing state. The mailer then adds forcefully: "Don't Let McCain Get Away With It."

Ya got the EPA and a Republican...I wouldn't even know where to begin to find truth in that bunch....

I watched An Inconvenient Truth for the first time last night...

Rep. Don Young racks up $1.2

Rep. Don Young racks up $1.2 million in legal fees this year.
A review of campaign filings through July 2008 conducted by Roll Call finds that “a quarter of House lawmakers reported spending on legal fees in the first half of 2008.” The review found that Rep. Don Young (R-AK), “spent the most on legal costs in the current cycle, shelling out more than $1.2 million.” “Prosecutors have reportedly been looking at whether Young took bribes, illegal gratuities or unreported gifts from Veco,” an Alaskan oil services company with close ties to indicted Sen. Ted Stevens.

Neocons Call For U.S. To

Neocons Call For U.S. To Launch War With Russia
Today the New York Times reports that Russia is escalating its war with Georgia, “moving tanks and troops through the separatist enclave of South Ossetia and advancing toward the city of Gori in central Georgia” and even bombing parts of Tibilisi, the Georgian captial.

Russia’s increasing aggression is putting a spark into American neoconservatives. Today on the Times op-ed page, one of their leaders, William Kristol, claims the U.S. must “defend” Georgia’s sovereignty as a reward for its participation in Iraq, while the conservative Washington Times is calling for “maximum pressure” on Russia:

Bill Kristol: [Georgia] has had the third-largest military presence — about 2,000 troops — fighting along with U.S. soldiers and marines in Iraq. For this reason alone, we owe Georgia a serious effort to defend its sovereignty. Surely we cannot simply stand by as an autocratic aggressor gobbles up part of — and perhaps destabilizes all of — a friendly democratic nation.

Washington Times: It is in America’s interest to exert maximum pressure on Russia to withdraw its troops and halt the interference in Georgian territory. This latest act shows the need for greater resolve in establishing a European security system that can be an effective check on Russian power

Writing in the Washington Post today, Robert Kagan goes even further, suggesting that the Georgia-Russia conflict may be the start of World War III:

Do you recall the precise details of the Sudeten Crisis that led to Nazi Germany’s invasion of Czechoslovakia? Of course not, because that morally ambiguous dispute is rightly remembered as a minor part of a much bigger drama. […]

The mood is reminiscent of Germany after World War I, when Germans complained about the “shameful Versailles diktat” imposed on a prostrate Germany by the victorious powers and about the corrupt politicians who stabbed the nation in the back.

Like a good neoconservative, Kagan also links the Western response to the conflict and its wider policy towards Russia as “appeasement.”

Matthew Yglesias asks of Kagan’s World War II analogy: “If we launch a war with Russia — which would seem to be the point of busting out the analogy — then how are we going to find the time to launch wars with Iran and China?”

Update: Joe Klein over at Time's Swampland notes that its "raining Nazis." Matt Duss at the Wonk Room cautions against "throwing 'the Vladimir Putins and Hu Jintaos and Mahmoud Ahmadinejads of the world' all together into one category."

Change U.S. priorities from war/destruction to collaboration and focus on renewable energy technology. From an economic standpoint, green jobs can't be outsourced by their very nature. Focus on quality education that includes environmental education starting in preschool (hopefully, it will begin in the home); the economically poor (mostly women and children) suffer the most from climate
