NETROOTS UPDATE w/pics
Submitted by Fernando on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 8:00am.

If anyone saw Nancy's Q&A you saw her use the same old tired lines about FISA that were all debunked by Glen Greenwald. Then she blamed the Senate and by implication Harry Reid for letting it go to the House in the first place which was totally weak on her part. It was infuriating because she knew that we knew better. That was so insulting that I almost left.
![]() ![]()
Thank goodness for CodePink and their show of dissent. Afterwards when asked about what a new Democratic majority would mean she referenced rebuilding America's infrastructure. Decoded that means earmarks. Not once did she say that rescuing the Constitution was on that agenda. I wanted to throw something at her. But I didn't. I could feel my pulse in my ear drums I was so pissed off.
![]()
Al Gore's "surprise" appearance made getting up and to the exhibit hall worth while. He denied any interest in being a part of an Obama administration. He wants us all to sign up at wecansolveit.org and sign up in support of his 10 year Apollo type agenda to make the United States 100% run on renewable resources. I signed up from my phone just so I would get it done immediately because if Al says so, I don't ask questions. ![]()

Shortly after that panel came Lawrence Lessig. I only went because Sam told me to go during the meet up. That was probably the best presentation I've seen here. Only 9% of Americans think Congress is doing a "good" job. He based his presentation on public financing being the answer to restoring trust in our legislators. I completely support his effort. He recommends that we join something he calls Change Congress. It works like Creative Commons where you pick what you support and it gives you candidates who match your priorities. This is his model for public financing. I'm going to give that a try.

The Written to Spoken word session that Sam was a speaker at with Cenk was interesting to me, but only because I am such a worry wart over the future of progressive media. Sam and Cenk did not get to speak as much as I wish they could have. The question and answer period was limited so most of us could not ask questions. One funny moment at the session was When I went to meet Cenk and shake his hand, I had hidden a Center for Constitutional Rights condom in my palm. The look on his face when he realized I was passing him something was hilarious. He put it in his pocket and I now feel like I've done my duty to keep Austin safe. One never knows what that Cenk is capable of getting into. I did get to talk to Sam out in the hall when we were done but all he wanted to talk about was "how toniD was doing?" :) I told him what I have read. I bumped into Phillipe Collin again and confronted him again about how much ad revenue we would have to bring in to get Sam back on. We went back and forth but basically he broke down and told me the existing AAR team would have to pay a heavy penalty to release a certain nuisance from his contract. I'm guessing you understand what I mean and I won't quote figures. I still think we can package Sam with Ads ready to sign up and offer them to Novam. Those are after all our ad airwaves and our market dollars we spend for goods and services. We have been quiet way too long. I'm not done with this. In fact, I've only started. »

Thanks
Thanks for the report and new (to me) links. Loved your line, "if Al says so, I don't ask questions."
Thanks for commenting mishld
Your voice is always welcome.
Thanks for posting all the
photos and commentary, Nando! Feels like I am there with you!
do you feel my presence over your left shoulder?
Tell Sam so far so good. And I send much luv and luck his way!
Don't think Nancy and her kind of Dem aren't afraid! They are. And it is specifically because of net roots and how fast it has taken off that scares them. We all need to push harder.
Ford heckled for supporting
Ford heckled for supporting FOX at Netroots gathering
The ideological divide within the Democratic Party was alive and well during a keynote session at this year's Netroots Nation convention between DailyKos.com founder Markos Moulitsas Zuniga and the Democratic Leadership Council’s Harold Ford Jr.
The meeting between two men at opposite ends of the Democratic spectrum was meant to address party unity, but the attitude of the crowd was less than welcoming to political centrist Harold Ford.
Although both men agreed on the necessity of Democratic unity to elect Senator Barack Obama, the crowd showed that it was farther to the left than Ford after he praised FOX News.
During a question and answer with the audience, one man asked Ford why he was on television "smearing Democrats" if he sought party unity.
"I no longer work for FOX News, I did for about a year," Ford said, which brought clapping from those in the audience who didn't wait for Ford to finish his sentence.
"And I have great respect and admiration for my former colleagues there," Ford said, drawing immediate jeers and shouts of "Why?"
Ford added that he now works for the NBC and MSNBC news networks.
The split between Ford and Moulitsas continued with a discussion of the 2010 Democratic primaries, The Wall Street Journal reported.
"Harold will not applaud this, but in 2010 we’re going to have some Democrats we mean business to in some primaries," Moulitsas said, referring to Netroots activists who attempt to oust Democrats they dislike.
Ford countered this view by adding that some Democrats can't always be liberal in more conservative districts.

Right you are, toniD...
"Don't think Nancy and her kind of Dem aren't afraid! They are. And it is specifically because of net roots and how fast it has taken off that scares them. We all need to push harder."
...your knee might be hurtin', but your spirit is as strong as ever.
Thanks for the photos and news, Fernando. Something is up with Nancy. In all seriousness, she's not looking good.
Nancy
Wow, I thought she looked better and more relaxed than I had seen her in a long time.
I'm glad to read your comment toniD
We are all very worried about you. I know you can handle any pain but I'm really squeamish so I can't even imagine it.
Any you are right. Ford is a tool. I left before the jeering started because that piece of work was more than I could stand.
CeeCee & Zeek, Nancy treated us like cattle regardless of her appearance imho. Zeek, maybe you can point me to a redeeming fight she has won or even started. If it's not safe, I don't think she's in to play. We need leaders not cowardly paper tigers.
Lessig's opening line was "With all due respect Madam Speaker" ... Then he tore into her lame appearance too. It was like a cool glass of water after coming out of a desert.

I was merely referring to her personal appearance
I saw her on some other thing recently and she did not look as good.
The right wing jerks like Melanie Morgan have always made fun of her looks with taunts about bug eyes and plastic surgery and botox, a saw that many on her other flank seem to have gleefully picked up on.
There really isn't much to say about her achievements except to refer you to her website. Anything she has done or might have would fall short for you anyway, especially when she can't control the Senate. I am just thankful for the little things like some change in direction and no Hassert and Boehner in charge.
But that's just me. Now I will be willing to settle for some bigger majorities in both houses and an O'Bama presidency. Then maybe we can see what can really be done. You know, if we don't get another Roberts or Alito or Scalia in the SCOTUS, I may just be satisfied with that, too.
BTW, was it really hot in there? Gore was shvitzing like crazy it seemed. Will we see more pictures?

If these two are at the "opposite ends of the Democratic [Party?] spectrum..." then this just goes to show how narrow the spectrum is. Both are into rule by the few. There are important differences, but neither advocate for real democracy. Both want to elect candidates, and leave it there.

Hey Fernando,
Your code of "nuisance from his contract" is lost on me. I must be way out of the loop here.

Thanks Fernando
I appreciate the info from netroots... I watched Pelosi's comments online and spent most of my time giving her the finger...I lost the feed before Al came on the stage to rescue her...I was disappointed in the moderator for her segment, any feedback on that?...without talking money, how much of the nuisance's contract is left? thanks again
Conyers and Vets for Peace
I saw this infuriating video last night, Conyers really needs to leave Congress...
with all due respect when none is due! I did catch that
on the lessig podcast, thanks for reminding me, Fernando, and all the pictures, that was the greatest presentation I have seen from anyone anywhere, inspiring and funny and full of useful ideas
i am so sorry i could not be there in person, I almost had a last minute notion to go, but by then it would have been too late anyway, and when i looked at my work schedule, it was just not doable for me at that time. A pity, because Austin is actually not too distant or hard to get to from New Orleans
gulfstreams that's a strong video
i wonder when was that meeting with the veterans taking place, before or after it was decided to hold these "bandaid" moot hearings on kucinich's bill this week
it's possible that this is what made conyers go to pelosi and beg for some gesture that would serve to calm the burning rage he felt expressed there

one last post for me before i turn in
gotta get some work done
but just so you know i wanna let you know, how they're covering the US presidential race in the mainstream media overseas, in Italy to be precise - i had to laugh as i was watching the "news" - I subscribe to an italian channel which is pretty mainstream , kind of like cnn
so they were talking about barak obama trip in the ME and were showing him shaking hands and chatting with the soldiers, then they moved to mcain and mentioned how he's accusing obama of not enough international experience and blah blah and then - and this cracked me up, that they would say it in that context and the way they said it - mentioned mcain speech about a border of iraq with pakistan, and that he had also made a reference previously to the country of checoslovakia even though there's no such country since 1992!
this makes me think that maybe this italian channel gets its information not from fox news or even cnn but from utube and the blogs
thanks gulf, i'll check it out
later
The Left is busy bashing Obama, The Right plot to steal election
Dr. Bob Fitrakis is a College Professor/Lawyer/ Journalist that is the courageous activist that exposed the election fraud of 2000 and 2004. As a matter of fact, the former Attorney General of Ohio tried to sanction Dr. Fitrakis and his law partner Cliff Arnebeck. He has appeared on Sam's show, Hartmann, Miller and Malloy.
On Saturday Dr. Bob was on a radio talk show in Columbus Ohio. He dropped the name Mike Connell. Who is this man, you might ask? Well! He is certainly someone we should all be aware of. God help us!
MIKE CONNELL:
Michael (Mike) L. Connell is President, Chief Political Strategist and CEO of New Media Communications, Inc., a Republican website development and internet services firm based in Richfield, OH. New Media's GOP clients are a "'Who's Who' of Republican politics", having provided campaign web services and Internet strategy for Bush-Cheney 2000/2004, as well as Dick Armey, Spencer Abraham for Senate 2000, Heather Wilson for Congress 2000/2002/2004, Rick Santorum for Senate 2000/2006, and John Thune for Senate 2002/2004 to name just a few.
New Media also designed GOP.com for the Republican National Committee, RGA.org for the Republican Governors Association, and between two and three dozen state GOP sites. In April 2001, Connell spun-off GovTech Solutions from New Media to handle its growing list of federal government clients, such as MajorityWhip.gov for Tom DeLay and Johnny Isakson. Business filings in the state of Ohio show that Govtech's founding members were Connell's wife Heather, and the well-known GOP operative and Chairman of the DCI Group, Thomas J. Synhorst. By 2004, Govtech's clients would grow to include more than 20 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, GOP.gov, the web site of the House Republican Conference, and the House Intelligence, Judiciary, Financial Services, Way and Means, and Administration committees. The latter was acquired while House Administration was chaired by former-U.S. Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio, who was convicted in 2006 of conspiracy to defraud the United States.
NOW HERE IS WHERE IT GETS SCARY!
Basically Connell had access to sensitive data regarding the House of Representatives that include:
· House Intelligence
· Ways & Means
· Judiciary
· Financial
· Administration
THE CONCLUSION:
Now you know why the Democrats are silent. No impeachment! No contempt of congress for Rove! None for Mukasey! Connell knows everything. He knows where all the bodies are buried. Furthermore, he was fired from the in 1990 Mark Pence campaign for election fraud.
NOW YOU KNOW!
Dr Bob Fitrakis is the author of several books on election fraud. He can be reached at:

Where there is a Republican in charge, there will be spies...
State police spying decried
O'Malley pledges not to infringe on citizens' free speech
By Jonathan Bor and Gus G. Sentementes | Sun Reporters
July 19, 2008
A day after the American Civil Liberties Union released documents showing that the Maryland State Police spied on peace activists and anti-death penalty groups, Gov. Martin O'Malley vowed yesterday not to allow state law enforcement agencies to monitor people exercising their right to free speech.
In a prepared statement, O'Malley, a Democrat, noted that the spying occurred under the previous administration, that of Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. And while he said the state would "take seriously" possible threats to public safety, O'Malley vowed not to allow police to monitor groups when there is no evidence of wrongdoing.
The governor said his administration "does not and will not use public resources to target or monitor peaceful activities where Maryland citizens are exercising their First Amendment rights."
The police measures, which involved the infiltration of activist groups by covert agents, also drew an expression of concern by Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin and a sharp rebuke by Maryland Common Cause, a government watchdog group. Cardin called for a "full accounting" of the police surveillance.

This is certainly a surprise to wake up to. Thank you Sam! I was finally catching the Ashcroft hearings in its entirety. If you haven't seen it, they say it is 3 hours but it's really 4 hours long. It's incredible testimony, I recommend you catch it at C-Span Archives I passed out at the end while I was recording it. Then my computer automatically upgraded windows software and rebooted so I didn't get a chance to save it. In the end, I went to bed real late.
My daughter woke me up after several phone calls. I was already late for work. I was about to panic when she gave me the bad news that one of our best friends lost his house to fire and she was there helping out.

Excerpt
Let me begin by saying that I am not a Batman fan. I think he is corporate criminal who focuses on street crime while Bruce Wayne's "Wayne Enterprises" acts as an international hi-tech arms dealer. As presented In various forms of the media (comic books, cartoons, and movies), Wayne's conglomerate is involved in many questionable industrial enterprises -- from petroleum extraction and chemical processing to bio-tech and corporate control of the media (through his ownership of the Daily Planet from Superman fame). So while I am in awe of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the same way that I am in awe of Rupert Murdoch or Dick Cheney, I am not a fan of the character and do not see him as a hero.
This current movie goes to new lows for Batman, but before we get to the current movie... first let's look at some of his more well known foes from previous movies. The Poison Ivy character, best known from the 1997 movie Batman & Robin, is an overt environmentalist (albeit a misanthropic one) who overtly and directly accuses Wayne Enterprises of environmental crimes as the motivation for her hostilities. Bruce Wayne quickly produces some greenwashing to his millionaire friends as a response to show her up. In the more recent Batman Begins (2005) the chief protagonist is a militant environmentalist (albeit a misanthropic one) in Ra's al Ghul. Both times, the environmentalist villains are handily dispatched by the billionaire corporatist Bruce Wayne in the form of his technologically enabled alter ego. I could go on with other villains created or motivated by Wayne Industry's indiscretions, but you get the idea.

Whole Earth Markets blog update
Did anyone catch the comment I left at the blog for the CEO of Whole Earth Markets?
I was in Austin last week for Netroots. I was surprised to not see your presence. In fact, Dallas just had progressive radio return to our market. Why is it we have to come to your blog to hear about all the great progressive things you do?
We lost our progressive talk radio AM station because large advertisers blacklisted Air America. Please consider selling your product where your target audience exists. I am not associated with any radio station or media outlet. I am just a progressive who is concerned about large companies poisoning our water, air, and food. The only people who speak about this honestly is independent media. Please consider supporting them.
Please go to http://rationalradio.org/ and make an inquiry.
Well, it still shows awaiting moderation but now also has a note saying the comment was forwarded within the company.
We need progressive companies to support progressive media. Please consider letting your dollars work for you to shore up our progressive radio stations. Tell them you want them to sell where you listen. Or send a similar message to the Whole Earth CEO at:

We are their target audience. Why do they advertise elsewhere when we listen to AAR and Novam. They need to fund the local radio station ads to sell to us. I'm just going to find companies that attempt to answer progressive issues about the environment, health care, renewable energy and just write them until someone notices.
It sure would be nice if others did that too. I think bloggers could really make a difference to let them know they aren't really progressive if they are supporting corporate main stream media.

Report: Russia mulls sending bombers to Cuba
Agence France-Presse
Published: Tuesday July 22, 2008
Russia may start regular flights by long-range bombers to Cuba in response to US plans to build missile defence sites in Eastern Europe, the newspaper Izvestia reported Monday, quoting an official.
"Such discussions exist," the unidentified senior Russian air force official was quoted as saying, adding that the measure would be a response to the United States "deploying missile defence systems in Poland and the Czech Republic."

I've never heard it put like that. My mom once asked my why I get so angry and combative with others who bring up Christianity (such as my 72yo nun aunt). I told her that the Bible just teaches people to hate and embeds bigotry into their belief systems.
She was shocked to hear me say that but now fully understands how it works. Nothing like a few dead babies from an illegal war sold as a crusade to shake reality into some people.

some of us have tried for years to talk about what the real shituation is here and globally.
what we're up against is people dedicated to believing in the "myth" of democracy instead of the reality.
we repeat, strike a few sparks and for the most part watch the fire die out in the soggy wood we're working with.
on the bright side, occasionally we get a nice little fire going in an individuals heart that stays lit from then on.
blows me away when i type for hours to enlighten an individual about political realities only to have them forget the whole thing a day later.
short term memory problems? addiction to the security of propaganda myth? inability to read? fear of going against the herd? i've encountered all the above here.
still we persist. i am hoping like hell eventually we'll collectively realise we've had enough of the lies and decide we're not taking anymore of it.
i reccomend listening to Naomi Wolf, "The End of America" for a 'read' on what USA democracy is really about for us and the rest of the world and what we're going to have to do change this.

This is the second post in two days where someone is talking God/Jesus/Anarchy..that's odd...
http://dalsol.org/?p=399
"Personally, I loved Joker’s anarchist views. I’ve always known that if I weren’t a Christian I would be an anarchist. You can blame one of my college professors for that. He made us read the Unabomber’s Manifesto and… I’m gonna shut up. I still love Jesus."
Here's the one from yesterday:
http://inhabitatiodei.wordpress.com/2008/07/21/the-anarchic-kingdom-of-g...
The Anarchic Kingdom of God
Posted on July 21, 2008 by Halden
“Anarchism as a principle stands in line with God’s kingdom because the theocracy of God’s kingdom means none other than an anarchist order. The anarchism of God’s kingdom does not mean disorder or chaos but quite the reverse. Here every human being stands in a direct relation to God and in freely ordered and equally based community to each other. The kingdom of God does not run counter to anarchism, but anarchism comes out of the kingdom of God. Where anarchism stands under the rule of God, there is no master-slave relation in the interpersonal realm. The primary rule of God does not tolerate a secondary dominating form of human over human. Where there is the Spirit of the living God, there occurs a voluntary and dominion-free personal community.”

Chavez prepares for Bush coup
Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, has called for a strategic alliance with Russia to protect his country from the United States.
"That way we can guarantee Venezuela's sovereignty, which is now threatened by the US," Chavez said shortly after his arrival in Moscow on Tuesday.
Chavez has repeatedly accused Washington of plotting an invasion of Venezuela to destabilise his government, despite US denials.
The president is in Russia to broker a number of deals involving weapons purchases, oil exploration and possibly the creation of a joint financial institution.
It is his first meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, who took office in May.
Welcoming Chavez at his castle resort near Moscow, the capital, Medvedev said Russian-Venezuelan relations "are one of the key factors of security in the (South American) region".

it sounds like what you're trying to do with advertising requires some coordinated effort, a movement almost, gotta be a large number to make some waves. I am with you guys and count me in, but....(I don't have the time right now, but...), but it would seem to me the first thing to do would be some minimal research (google or whatever) to see if it already exists a similar effort initiated by somebody else, just maybe, so we can join forces if something already exists (basically making progressive corps and businesses aware of their progressive target audience and tell them what we want, in the general and in the specific) - i remember a "buy blue" campaign at one point which had a list of "good" companies, don't even know if it still exists nor whether it produced any results - it might be useful to at least check that list to get some ideas of whom to address - we are more focused their campaign was more generalized and consume oriented, but to identify the good companies, that would save us some work right there
there may also be something already directed at media out there on similar lines, it's hard to think there wouldn't be, so to avoid duplicating efforts and wasting time/resources we should do some research i think, but as i said, sorry, right now i do not have the time
let me know if you see it mire

Here you go, sheeple:
Netroots Nation or Nation of Sheep?
By RONNIE CUMMINS
Saturday morning, July 19. Sitting here at the Netroots Nation conference in Austin, Texas with several thousand other online activists. Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Party Speaker of the House, the third most powerful politician in the United States, is up on the podium, doing her best to damp down the mounting criticism of the Democratic Party's shameful collaboration in funding the war and aiding and abetting the Bush administration's shredding of the Constitution.
Before Pelosi speaks, an announcement is made from the podium that disruptions will not be tolerated--if any of us express our frustrations too passionately with Pelosi and the sell-out Democratic Party leadership we will be arrested. The first question the Netroots moderator poses to Pelosi is about impeachment. This generates considerable applause and cheers from the crowd. Pelosi, notorious for proclaiming that "impeachment is off the table," artfully dodges the question and evasively talks about censuring the Bush administration and getting tough on Karl Rove. This generates polite clapping from the front of the room, where all the tables have apparently been "reserved" for Pelosi fans. In contrast I can see groans, grimaces, and shaking of heads from many of us, the netroots rabble, sitting at the back of the hall.
I resist a strong urge to get up and leave. How long will the centrist bureaucrats of Netroots Nation and groups like MoveOn roll-over for lowest common denominator Democrats and Barack Obama? After an hour of rather boring rhetoric by Pelosi, Al Gore makes a surprise appearance on the stage, letting Nancy off the hook.
After a standing ovation, Gore reminds us that the polar icecaps are melting even faster than scientists had expected. The global climate crisis, he goes on, is about to turn into a climate catastrophe. Gore then points out that global warming is of course connected to the energy crisis, reliance on foreign oil, and the economic crisis, as well as the lack of political leadership in the country. Finally, to cheers from the crowd, Gore calls on the assembled netroots to educate the public and get behind his campaign http://www.wecansolveit.org to generate 100% of the nation's electricity from renewable sources of energy within 10 years.
Pelosi once again joins Gore on the stage and rather unconvincingly tries to present herself and the Democratic majority in the Congress as "revolutionary" on energy matters. This is too much for a number of us in the audience, and finally a man yells out at the top of his lungs, "What about the goddamn impeachment resolution?" The security guards at side of the hall look nervously around, but no one makes a move to arrest the man.
After unconvincingly claiming that she is trying to be "bi-partisan" today, and dodging a question about whether or not she will get behind Gore's campaign for 100% renewable electricity by 2018, Pelosi rather anti-climatically reminds us that nothing will change unless we "get out there and elect Obama and a Democratic majority in November..."
Whether or not you decide to vote for Democrat Barack Obama, Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney, or Independent Ralph Nader in November, please go to http://www.GrassrootsNetroots.org and join a growing radical populist army who believe we need an alternative to MoveOn and Democratic Party centrists. The doomsday clock is ticking. Let's fight like hell to make sure that 2008 is not the year where we tried to change drivers, but still went over the cliff.
Texas is a right to work state.
So?
Whole Foods is almost everywhere.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2007/mar/27/supermarkets.usnews
Mackey, 54, runs the empire partly from his 720-acre ranch outside Austin, where he tends chickens (and eats their eggs), venturing out in person and by blog to conduct arguments with people in the organics movement who believe that Whole Foods has betrayed most of its principles. He is an intriguing combination of the patriarchal idealist and a hard-headed, growth-pursuing businessman, with strong libertarian views. Deeply anti-union (he is widely quoted as likening unions to "having herpes"), he is criticised for refusing to back what might seem obvious causes, for instance over the rights and pay rates of migrant labour on American farms. But he still has a quest, according to his blog, to reform industrial agriculture, and indeed "to make the world a better place".
JOKE -O- THE DECADE
Thanks I'm glad someone actually thinks this is news. Hopefully, 13 years from now, or less, our King George will be headed to The Hague.
In Belgrade, a bizarre picture emerged of how Karadzic, who masterminded the 42-month siege of Sarajevo and is held politically responsible for the massacre of almost 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in July 1995, reinvented himself as a bearded New Age guru and devotee of alternative medicine living modestly in a Belgrade suburb and touring the country to deliver homilies on a better life.

Just listening to Sustein on Democracy Now saying that
it would make no sense to impeach two presidents in a row. What the fuck is he saying here. The first impeachment was a total sham and this one has merits beyond the pale. This indicates to me that the Washington establishment has no judgement on what the constitution even means. That it is so political that it has lost its conscience. In essence it is a sociopath that is very charming but out to fuck us up the butt.

Is mankind killing penguins washing ashore on Brazil's coast?

Hundreds of Patagonian penguins have washed up since late-June on the Brazilian coast. Many of them are baby penguins and arrived suffering from hypothermia, malnutrition and other ailments. | View larger image
NITEROI, Brazil — The discovery of hundreds of young penguins washing up along the Brazilian shoreline over the past month has sparked a scientific mystery over what may have led the birds thousands of miles astray.
"The penguin population is intimately linked to their supplies of food, so this suggests something is happening to the population of fish they eat," said biologist Marcelo Bertellotti at the National Patagonic Center in Puerto Madryn, Argentina.
"It appears the penguins are not finding fish where they normally do, and one reason could be that warming waters and climate change have impacted the fish population."

Antiwar activists split over Obama's troop plans
By David Lightman | McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's plan to build up U.S. forces in Afghanistan while keeping perhaps 50,000 troops in Iraq has triggered a deep rift among antiwar activists, a reminder of the difficult tasking facing the presumptive Democratic nominee as he tries to broaden his appeal.
Barbra Bearden, spokeswoman for Peace Action, called Obama's comments about Afghanistan "a bit disheartening."
Ian Thompson, lead organizer in Los Angeles for Act Now to Stop War & End Racism, an antiwar group, found Obama's Afghanistan position similar to that of President Bush and presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain.
"What this shows is that Barack Obama does not really represent any policy shift," he said
But Obama's views troubled many peace activists.
Bearden of Peace Action said that "we've seen the results of these military actions. We create a power vacuum and try to create a government. We did that in Iraq, and now we're talking about using the same failed strategy again in Afghanistan."
Judith LeBlanc, organizing coordinator for United for Peace & Justice, said that "dealing with the threat of terrorism cannot be done on a military basis." She and other activists wanted to hear more from Obama about a strategy for dealing with terrorism around the globe, including more use of diplomacy and economic aid.
The activists agreed on this much: They're not going to vote for McCain

And the Bush administration? Is it, more or less business as usual or astonishingly wretched?

Severely burned forests still can serve habitat purposes BUT
A severely burned forest still provides wildlife with things it can use -- lots of leftovers for wildlife condos and places to eat the returning bugs -- BUT that's not what is planned for the fires that Schwarzenegger and Bush allowed to burn for a week before any concerted effort at control! The number of fires has gone down from about 2,000 to 35 or so now. But those fires that hit woodlands are destined to be harvested for the lumber/wood product value when the corporatists get their way. It gets me mad, because, all the while the hourly news would mention yet more fires in California, I could only wonder why the National Guard wasn't being called in yet, why the greatest effort was not being taken to put out the fires pronto. I realize that many local fire personnel were kept in place because the fire danger was so great statewide that local protection had to be kept in place to cover potential fires. However, knowing that makes it seem even more logical that the effort would have been made by the Schwarzenegger and the Feds to act swiftly.
Watching California burn this summer is something like watching New Orleans drown: It is a given that DISASTER PROFITEERING (disaster capitalism as Naomi Klein calls it), is going to kick in as a result of these great losses to the public and to the flora and fauna of California's open spaces.

NEW YORK If you ever wondered what happened to Jeff Gannon, the former conservative reporter whose questionable White House credentialing and ties to several sex Web sites forced him out of a job, wonder no more.
The one-time reporter for Talon News, whose easy press pass access and softball questions sparked a review of White House credentialing policies three years ago, is still in the Washington news game. This time at the National Press Club.
Since 2006, Gannon, whose real name is James Guckert, has been a member in good standing and currently serves on two press club committees, according to the esteemed journalistic organization. He also blogs on the Press Club Web site, as well as on his own online page, with a lot to say recently about the new book by his old source, White House ex-spokesman Scott McClellan.
"I am not going to go away in the face of adversity," Gannon, 51, told E&P, referring to the negative attention he received in 2005 when questions about his press access to presidential briefings were raised. "Sticking up for free speech is a particularly good thing to do."
Gannon was forced to resign his job with Talon News in the Spring of 2005 after it was revealed he had used a pseudonym, had little journalism background, and had ties to several gay sex Web sites.
Today, he has no full-time position at a news outlet, but he explained, "for a single person, blogging can be profitable."
On his Press Club blog, Gannon has opined on Code Pink, the anti-war group, and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama's controversial former pastor, who appeared at the press club several months ago.
"The National Press Club should do more events of this nature, regardless of the outcome," he blogged about the Wright visit. "While I bristled when serial liars Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame received a hero’s welcome at the Club, at least the working press had a chance to question them, however uncritically it did so. I strongly believe that every President of the United States should address the Club each year. It would probably provide a fairer forum than that the ideologically homogenous White House Press Corps."
Gannon said he plans to continue such blogging efforts on both sites, noting "I am doing more commentary and analyzing and not really reporting. I am going to be writing a lot about [the presidential campaign]. How the traditional media is actively campaigning for Barack Obama."

The Austin-American Statesman published a front-page article on Sunday mocking Netroots Nation and calling Rep. Nancy Pelosi "arguably so left-leaning that her parenthetical should be D-Beijing." Editor & Publisher reports that the piece soon disappeared from the paper's website:
Monday: I was back in New York and had turned the page on all this, until I got an email from Michael King, news editor at the Austin Chronicle, the long-running and successful alt-weekly ...
King informed me that the comments from Beach's article had been wiped and it was impossible to find the article on the paper's Web site, though it might still be there somewhere. Perhaps, he mused, "some editor finally looked at the piece and yanked it out of simple embarrassment."
In fact, the editor has issued an apology -- but only for trying to be funny on the front page:
Readers expect front-page stories to speak directly and clearly about events and issues. Eliminating the possibility of misunderstanding from our work is a critical part of our daily newsroom routine. When we communicate in a way that could be misinterpreted, we fail to meet our standards.
Our front-page story Sunday about the Netroots Nation convention included doses of irony and exaggeration....

Reagan Information Agency chief Charles Wick diesAP foreign, Tuesday July 22 2008 By ROBERT JABLON
Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Charles Z. Wick, who as director of the U.S. Information Agency under Ronald Reagan expanded American broadcasts to Cuba and Russia but whose agency was accused of blacklisting liberals from a government program, has died. He was 90.
Charlie Wick was magnificent in letting the world know about Ronald Reagan's America. He also had a great capacity for friendship, and he knew how to help his friends have a good time,'' former Reagan Secretary of State George Shultz said in a statement.
In 1986, the USIA was accused of censorship for refusing to grant government certification that would make it easier to export seven documentaries that had views contrary to those of the Reagan administration.
Wick also took heat in 1984 when it was revealed that the USIA had a list of 84 people who were barred from agency-sponsored speaking engagements overseas. They included television anchorman Walter Cronkite; consumer advocate Ralph Nader; and Coretta Scott King, the widow of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
Wick denied any personal involvement in the list, saying a blacklist was ``un-American,'' but he conceded that ``political bias'' might have had a small role in its compilation.
Wick and Reagan were longtime friends, beginning in 1959, when they ran a hot dog booth during a fair at their children's school. He went on to become an important supporter during Reagan's presidential campaign. When appointed to the USIA post in 1981, he was a businessman involved in financing motion pictures and television productions, health care and mortgage industries. He also headed his own company, Wick Financial Corp.
Wick was the longest-serving director of the USIA.
``He understands the need for the United States to convey its message to the people of the world if we're to succeed internationally. And he knows how to do it better than it's ever been done before,'' Reagan said.

I know that Cenk when he figured out what you had handed him, surely did think it was "AWWWWWSOME" as he would put it...esp with the Center for Constitutional Rights emblazoned on the wrapper... But, in his defense, I must tell you that beleive it or not, he and Wendy became engaged about a month so ago after 4 years together, so he is no longer getting into any more of that kind of trouble.
But I am sure he was pleased to know his "rep" has not been diminished.... LOL ;)
Thanks for all your reporting and pics from the event.
Much much appreciated.

Lesbos locals lose lesbian appeal
Three residents of the Greek island of Lesbos have lost an attempt to ban the use of the word "lesbian" to describe gay women.
The residents argued that using the term in reference to gay women insulted their identity.
But an Athens court ruled there was no justification for their contention that they felt slighted, saying the word did not define the islanders' identity.
Greeks often refer to the island as Mytilene, after its capital.
"This is a good decision for lesbians everywhere," Vassilis Chirdaris, lawyer for the Gay and Lesbian Union of Greece, told Reuters news agency.

Nora - Semi -educated info about your question
I didn't hear the actual interview, but I did hear a snippet of a call in @ the earlier call. I think it was as woman who had money in the IndyMac bank which had the run on it last week. She had a complicated specific case regarding her $ deposited in the bank. It included having more than 100K in one bank, and possibly a partner with another large amount, and as the FDIC says - insured up to 100K... over that then there are issues.
So the OVER the 100K there is risk of losing your money... so she lost 8K in some way...
I don't know all the details, so cannot speak intelligently about it.
SO I would suggest you look up info on IndyMac and what is actually going on AND in concern for your own finances, if you have more than 100K in any one bank, I would suggest for your own peace of mind, move the extra to another bank. But of course, I am not an expert on this area of finance... My expertise is wall street and I do not give advise on that. So, please consult your own advisors or your own bank. In fact - go research your OWN bank. that is the smartest thing to do.
Hope this helps.

That was NOTHING compared to what a hurricane can do... esp to new construction NOT made for hurricane strength... or flood proof rain)
REMEBER - those in the path - put all your important papers - deed to house, car, insurance policies... and if you do not have this already and have time take pics and/or video with the date and time stamp of all of your most important belongings in your house. .......AND then put all of those things into strong plastic bags NOW. AND if you have pets, get them ready to take with you if you have to leave- and find a place that takes pets to go to ahead of time so you don't have to worry about where to go IF G-d forbid that time comes. ALSO - pack all your medicine in plastic bags as well as all prescriptions in a list.

Randi's subhost (Harrison? goharrison.com ) has been mentioning the secret session of Congress on March 13....and that the secret session wasn't merely about getting everybody behind the FISA bill they did pass a few days later.

Secret House Sesson
Only four secret sessions have been called in the history of the House of Representatives. The fourth secret session was called on March 13, 2008. The last House secret session was over 20 years ago in 1983 to discuss the secret US war against Nicaragua. It wasn't until the Iran Contra scandal of 1986 that the public learned the U.S. was illegally selling weapons to Iran in order to fund the secret war with Nicaragua. What most Americans still do not know is the US weapon sales to Iran began in 1981 as part of an illegal operation orchestrated by Ronald Reagan while running for President against President Jimmy Carter. For more information about this moment in history read America Held Hostage.
Secret House sessions have historically been used for two purposes: 1) to influence representatives with false information so that they support legislation they would otherwise oppose, and 2) silence representatives as the information cannot be shared with the public. This latter use is likely why Rep. Dennis Kucinich refused to participate in the secret House session. A secret House session seems hard to believe so click here to watch the video protest of Rep. Kucinich.
Leaks from the recent March meeting indicate a key topic was managing civil unrest near the end of this year. Could the civil unrest be connected to a new war with Iran?

some of us have tried for years to talk about what the real shituation is here and globally.
what we're up against is people dedicated to believing in the "myth" of democracy instead of the reality.
we repeat, strike a few sparks and for the most part watch the fire die out in the soggy wood we're working with.
on the bright side, occasionally we get a nice little fire going in an individuals heart that stays lit from then on.
blows me away when i type for hours to enlighten an individual about political realities only to have them forget the whole thing a day later.
short term memory problems? addiction to the security of propaganda myth? inability to read? fear of going against the herd? i've encountered all the above here.
still we persist. i am hoping like hell eventually we'll collectively realise we've had enough of the lies and decide we're not taking anymore of it.
i reccomend listening to Naomi Wolf, "The End of America" for a 'read' on what USA democracy is really about for us and the rest of the world and what we're going to have to do change this.

I think about democracy differently since watching that video (I posted youtube link here a few threads back) of Aaron Russo where he says (paraphrase)--
We've been misled to champion and be satisfied with democracy -- which means majority RULES and 51 percent of the people can ignore the other 49 percent -- when, actually, the Founders of the U.S.A. gave us a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC which guarantees that 99 percent of the people can NEVER deny one percent of the people its human rights!

Ecuador's President now in neocon crosshairs [just like Chavez]
July 21, 2008 -- Ecuador's President now in neocon crosshairs
Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has now found himself, like his ally Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, in the neocon crosshairs for ordering Ecuador's Deposit Guarantee Agency (AGD) to seize control of some 200 companies belonging to fugitive Ecuadorian banker brothers William and Roberto Isaias. The neocons, especially those that inhabit the greater Miami area and hail from Cuba and New York, are accusing Correa of cracking down on press freedoms. It is the same cant heard from the neocons after Chavez closed two TV networks, RCTV and Globovision, for doing the bidding of the neocons in Washington and Miami.
In Ecuador, Correa's actions had nothing to do with press freedom. The Isaias brothers' Isaias Group owned Ecuador's Filanbanco bank. Filanbanco collapsed in 1998 and the Ecuadorian government was left holding the bag. Ecuador's government claims the Isaias brothers embezzled $661 million from the bank. However, the Ecuadorian government cannot do very much to recover the losses because the Isaias brothers fled Ecuador and now live comfortably, under the protection of the Bush regime, in Florida. They fled to the Miami area in 2000 before an arrest order was issued by Ecuador. The Correa government has asked the United States to extradite the Isaias brothers back to Ecuador and outgoing U.S. ambassador to Ecuador Linda Jewell said the request is being studied.
The Isaias brothers and their friends in Miami, including Miami Herald Latin America correspondent Andres Oppenheimer, are falsely charging that Correa is stamping out press freedom in his seizure of Isaias Group companies because they include three media companies: TC-Television, Gamavision, and Cablevision. However, among the other Isaias companies seized are a sugar mill, construction firms, and trading and insurance companies. Correa has not moved to take over other media companies that have criticized him much more vociferously than the Isaias Group TV stations.
Much like the Russian oligarchs who raided the Soviet and Russian treasuries and then absconded abroad with the funds, the Isaias brothers lorded over a business empire amid the collapse of the Ecuadorian economy in 1998. Ecuador was even forced to scrap its national currency and adopt the U.S. dollar.
Correa, a U.S.-trained economist, is now trying to revive Ecuador's economy and political system, the latter through a referendum on a new constitution, and part of his plan is to try to recover the money embezzled by the Isaias brothers.
U.S. ambassador Jewell, who is leaving her post in Quito, may see Correa as a victim of the neocon U.S. foreign policy that is being dictated from their think tanks in Washington and condos in Miami and Coral Gables. She recently defended Correa and said there is no proof to past neocon allegations that Correa is supporting the Colombian FARC rebels. Colombia conducted a U.S.-supported military raid into Ecuador in March of this year, killing a number of FARC guerrillas, including FARC deputy commander Raul Reyes, as well as others. U.S. support for the Colombian raid was seen as retaliation for Ecuador's ordering the U.S. to leave its military airbase at Manta on the Ecuadorian coast.
The comments by Jewell in support of Correa are sure to earn her the wrath of the neocons in Washington and Miami, which will now place a vendetta against the ambassador high on their "to do" list.

Yes, the problem is democracy requires a majority. Most of us think that it is a majority of people, but the rugged truth is it is, and has been, a majority of money that greases the wheels of democracy as practiced since the beginning.
I'd solve that problem right now but like I said, see my post about the !@#@!#@!% thunderstorm last night.

it would make no sense to impeach two presidents in a row. What the fuck is he saying here. The first impeachment was a total sham and this one has merits beyond the pale.
...I was driving and scanning the radio to happen upon a Baltimore talk radio station. A few minutes into the discussion, I realized it was one of a conservative nature (the population of northern Maryland counties is smaller but tends to be conservative.)
I am not good at listening at such shows because facts are generally omitted or re-worked to fit their rationale for thinking the way they do. But, impeachment was the topic and since I had parked and had time before I had to leave the car, I thought it was safe for my well-being and psyche to listen. And besides I was interested in knowing what these people were thinking.
Surprisingly, the host (someone I have never heard of) and the callers had all agreed that Bush and Cheney had violated the Constitution, and if it were different circumstances they probably should be impeached. But it was the callers' rationalization that the terror of 9/11 made Bush and Cheney do it out of love for the country and in an attempt to protect the American people.
Further, after the impeachment process for Clinton's self gratification, they are fatigued by the whole idea.
Most callers said that rather than supporting impeachment that they were inclined to vote for any Democrat; but if the Democrats pursued impeachment, they would not. These callers weren't ranting or raving like wild-eyed lunatics.
At that point I knew this regime had ****ed US up, why Pelosi, Conyers, Mikulski and Hoyer have lost their souls and were doing what they were doing and why Gore refuses to get back into politics.
The Republicans gamed the system and played John and Jane Q. Public so they don't know right from wrong and have worn them down to the point of inviting the "devil" in our house.
While there may be more progressive thinkers, there are less progressive actors. America is no longer the home of the brave and land of the free, but of the fearful and tired.
