If you can't post the Mylaclipz (or, alternatively, want to make big ringtone $$$ off 'em instead), pleezpleezpleez at least get Lauren to scan her cartoon of you and her on the Sammycam and post it here. I wanna t-shirt, dammit, and if the scan's good enough, I'm making one.
Hoping that the AAR ineptitude I mentioned swings your way for a change and that we hear you 3-6 pm soon...

Dr. Paul Farmer Challenges Profit-Driven Medical System While Bringing Healthcare to Poor Communities Worldwide

Paul Farmer is not your ordinary doctor.
In going to the poorest places on earth, he is not only treating patients, but challenging whole healthcare systems.
More than twenty year ago, Dr. Farmer co-founded the charity Partners in Health to provide free medical care in central Haiti.
Today, Partners In Health provides healthcare for people with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other conditions in Haiti and eight other countries around the world.
We spend the hour with Dr. Farmer on his work, his remarkable background and the challenges of pursuing healthcare with a social justice perspective.

Sam, do not underestimate the importance of what you have done. Getting out the progressive message is an important part of the effort to build a progressive movement that can help create a better America and a better world. You have brought people together and brought on several people who have offered not just insights into our problems as a nation and a world but offered solutions.
So, Sam, be proud of everything that you have achieved. I don't know what is next for you, but thank you for all that you have done.
I would also like to thank everyone here at this blog. While I have not been active here in a very long time, I am impressed with the people here. May this online community continue to grow and soon be able to celebrate some good news with a great host.

Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama. DNC Rules committee. Saturday. Yesterday. Did you see that? Unity my butt. It was WWF, winner take all. Let's get ready to fumble!!!
The Democratic party is on the verge of doing a Leon Lett. Leon Lett was the talented defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys in the early to mid-90's. In the Super Bowl, Leon picked up a fumble and ran about 60 yards to a sure touchdown. He held the football out in his right hand to begin the celebration. Don Bebe, one of the fastest men in the NFL, came from nowhere and swatted the ball out of Leon's hand and thru the back of the endzone. No touchdown.
The country is sick and tired of George W. Bush and the Republicans. We, Americans, are ready to vote for almost anyone who doesn't have an "R" after his/her name. A fight on the floor of the Democratic convention will be a deal breaker. I don't know how we are going to choose a Democratic nominee. I thought we were going to choose by elected delegates but maybe I'm wrong. I have gotten to the point that I really don't care any more. We have to choose. We can choose someone else. Dennis Kucinich or Mike Gravel. We can do it by flipping a coin or by Ouija board. We just have to choose someone and choose NOW before we end up like Leon Lett, fumbling the ball at the 1 yard line.<<

Issues on the table or off the table?
Remember, these twelve issues represent the tip of the political iceberg. There are many more where these came from.
1. Adopt single payer national health insurance
2. Cut the huge, bloated, wasteful military budget
3. No to nuclear power, solar energy first
4. Aggressive crackdown on corporate crime and corporate welfare
5. Open up the Presidential debates
6. Adopt a carbon pollution tax
7. Reverse U.S. policy in the Middle East
8. Impeach Bush/Cheney
9. Repeal the Taft-Hartley anti-union law
10.Adopt a Wall Street securities speculation tax
11.Put an end to ballot access obstructionism
12.Work to end corporate personhood
Read these over?
Every one of these issues is OFF THE TABLE with McCain, Clinton and Obama.
Only Ralph Nader has these as platform planks.

Progressive "Movement" - The Power of Fusion Politics
dada,
Have you been working recently for any of the campaigns and candidates in the Working Families Party?
------
Progressive "Movement" - Working Families Party
Fusion -
In New York, election laws allow fusion, -- candidates for any public office can run as the nominee of more than one political party.
The votes candidates receive are tallied separately by party, then combined.
Fusion is powerful.
Voting in the Working Families column is no wasted gesture -- every ballot counts.
It sidesteps the Nader Effect, since voters can show their support for a progressive party agenda without spoiling the chances of a candidate -- usually a Democrat -- who has a shot at winning.
Schneiderman (who is the former chair of the New York Democratic Senate Campaign Committee) sez:
There's a lot of concern among progressive activists that the Democratic Party is too much in the grip of consultants who are always suggesting that they slide to the right and take conservative positions to accommodate swing voters, rather than exciting our own beliefs and animating people...
The hope is that the Working Families Party can empower progressive Democrats within the Democratic Party.

Back when Nixon had U.S. troops illegally go into Cambodia--
Terrible regional destabilization behavior was just normal operating procedures for Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon back during The Vietnam Incursion: They sent a full force of equipment and troops and support into Cambodia ILLEGALLY.
One mission was to destroy the town of SUNOL. It was leveled and napalm (white phosphorus) dropped on the survivors and wounded. After that, the word 'Sunol' entered the soldiers' vernacular as a VERB, and they 'sunoled' other communities.
What has changed? Is our military capable of performing with integrity or is there a direct line from the illegal destruction of Sunol to the obliteration of Fallujah?

Nora -- We need Preferential voting
I like the planks but I couldn't vote for Ralph Nader unless my vote would be re-cast should he lose.
Barack's WE is better than Hillary's ME -- and both of them are better than McCain. I wanted John Edwards who would have been more closer to the Nader planks. But in truth in our corporatized country no one sounding off on those planks is going to be elected. The corporate money would decimate him or her.
We need real campaign finance reform to reduce the impact of corporations AND preferential voting to allow Americans to vote their hearts first.
And we need Sam Seder FIVE DAYS A WEEK!!!

I just finished watching American Masters PBS 2 hrs on Pete Seeger. So at the moment I am feeling quite hopeful..but AAR - I dunno. about Sam...1000% hopeful. I know he will be back on air because he is the future of independent voices that speak the truth about all subjects - not talking left or right - just truth in all its forms. He has the chops and the intellect - mix it in with the humor and its a winning combo.
And of course he has US...built in...and I think he really knows this now...which will allow him to take the risks necessary to do whatever is next.
Nice to have you posting Will.

He refuses to say what portion. Book sales are helped. At some point he says what portion, and it's like .0002 per cent.
Didn't the MoveOn petition I signed say ALL the profits? (Maybe not, thought so though.)
Anyway, it needs to be a lot, and he needs to say the amount. They should keep pushing on that front.
I don't say that this guy has no actual desire to atone. He may have, the way he "over shared" confessing to KO (Randi noticed this as well). But I think he has no idea of the extent of what's needed to do so (kind of like a giving up golf sense of proportion only not quite that bad) and/or he was looking forward to the upside (the profits) as well.

The 14th amendment has been bastardized to allow a corporate entity personhood.
That was the beginning of corporate unaccountability.

Facebook 'violates privacy laws'

The Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic has listed 22 separate breaches of privacy law in its country.
Clinic director Phillipa Lawson told the BBC that, with more than seven million users in Canada, "Facebook needs to be held publicly accountable".
Facebook rejects the charge, claiming some of the highest standards around.
The complaint, filed with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, states that Facebook collects sensitive information about its users and shares it without their permission.
It goes on to say that the company does not alert users about how that information is being used and does not adequately destroy user data after accounts are closed.

Not true. Corporations have prostituted immigrants since day 1 but person hood has more to do with the first and fifth amendments from what I read. The 14th is ancillary in a comment apparently.
A recent article on the Straight Dope Web site says that in a famous 1886 case the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations are "persons" having the same rights as human beings based on the 14th Amendment, which was intended to protect the rights of former slaves. Not to nitpick, but the Supreme Court made no such decision. If you look at the case in question, Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company, you see that the court itself never rules on personhood. A court reporter by the name of J.C. Bancroft Davis (a former railroad president) snuck that "ruling" into the books. --bex, via the Straight Dope Message Board - Straight Dope
Straight Dope has how others say it to really happened, pbtrue1. Though it may be that it has an affect on corporations, absent the 14th Amendment, I am not convinced corporations would lose person hood.

Best Buy testing free
Best Buy testing free e-waste recycling program By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer
Mon Jun 2, 12:40 AM ET
Under pressure to help dispose some of the electronic waste it helped create, Best Buy Co. is testing a free program that will offer consumers a convenient way to ensure millions of obsolescent TVs, old computers and other unwanted gadgets don't poison the nation's dumps.
The trial, expected to be announced Monday, covers 117 Best Buy stores scattered across eight states that will collect a wide variety of electronic detritus at no charge, even if the Richfield, Minn.-based retailer didn't originally sell the merchandise.
The pilot stores are in Best Buy's Northern California, Minneapolis and Baltimore markets, as well as parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Depending on how the test goes, the nation's largest electronics retailer may expand the recycling program to all of its 922 stores in the United States.
"We want to take the time to learn if we can handle this before we go any further," said Best Buy spokeswoman Kelly Groehler. "We know the need is there and the waste stream is there. We think everyone needs to bear some responsibility for this — consumers, retailers and manufacturers."
As it is, Best Buy's test is believed to be the most extensive free electronics recycling program to be offered by a major retailer so far.

The Republican economic model at work. Notice the common theme of big talk about savings before it becomes law and then higher costs when rubber hits the road. This is precisely the kind of economics that McCain and his lobbyist friend Phil Gramm want to expand in Washington. Corporate profits increase and the once-promised customer savings disappear.
Average monthly bills for summertime usage have made a steady climb and are now at about $220 in Houston.
Compare that to the national average for the same usage: about $160.
That means electricity in Houston is 38 percent more expensive. Consumer advocates call the difference startling.
“And that is to us is why deregulation is a failure and we ought to think about ending this experiment,” Slocum said.
A failure for consumers but for the electricity industry?
“The industry looks at Texas as a success story,” Platts Energy News reporter Tom Tiernan said. “If you’re a generating company, Texas is a good market to be in.”
It’s simple economics.

True, this election has ruined friendships. I call Foul!!
The Michelle Tape
by BooMan
Sun Jun 1st, 2008 at 11:57:57 PM EST
My old friend, Larry Johnson, knows about manipulating elections from his training with the Central Intelligence Agency. He doesn't want Obama to win the nomination for whatever reason, and he's in full propaganda mode to do everything he can to frighten the superdelegates. He claims to have a shocking tape of Michelle Obama ranting in some anti-white diatribe. He promises to produce this tape tomorrow at 9am.
From what I understand, it is a tape of Michelle Obama criticizing the Bush administration.
How you'd write it:
Why did Bush cut folks off medicaid?
Why did Bush let New Orleans drown?
Why did Bush do nothing about Jena?
Why did Bush put us in Iraq for no reason?
How you'd say it:
Why'd he cut folks off medicaid?
Why'd he let New Orleans drown?
Why'd he do nothing about Jena?
Why'd he put us in Iraq for no reason?
How Larry Johnson wants you to hear it:
Whitie cut folks off medicaid?
Whitie let New Orleans drown?
Whitie do nothing about Jena?
Whitie put us in Iraq for no reason?
I'm going to be honest with you. Both SusanHu and Larry Johnson have been friends of mine. They have both done a lot for me and I am grateful and indebted to them. Any issues I've had with their activities in this election I have kept private. I haven't visited their site in four months because I found it too personally painful to read what they were writing and I did not want to be tempted to respond. I thought I owed them that. But loyalty can only go so far. If they publish this allegation tomorrow, I will no longer speak with them. And I say that with great sorrow.
This election has ruined a lot of friendships. I have tried hard not to let it ruin mine. But smears of this type are unforgivable. I have been forebearing. Perhaps, in retrospect, I have been too forebearing. That's all I say. This is too painful to me.

Taylor Marsh and
Taylor Marsh and Reconciliation
by BooMan
Sun Jun 1st, 2008 at 10:21:04 PM EST
There's a lot of talk about reconciliation and how long it is going to take to put things back together so that we have a united party. I could write a really long piece about the subject, but I'm tired. So I just want to focus on two points. First, we have the ravings of Taylor Marsh, which is really representative of a subset of the Democratic Party coalition.
Could you be more out of touch? Seriously. Have you not talked to any Hillary Clinton supporters, read their emails in your inbox?
For 4 lousy delegates? How small are you people? Could you not understand what was swirling enough to allow Clinton her due in Michigan? Four lousy delegates?
You have no idea what you've done. The fury you have unleashed. Your arrogance is topped only by your ignorance and the sheer stupidity of this "compromise," which sends a message that you just don't get it. Oh, and by the way, you've also likely just thrown the 2008 election.
Taking myself out of the equation, as well as my support for Clinton which is unending, and to encapsulte the carnage wrought by Saturday's idiocy, you have simply given Hillary's supporters the reason they were craving. Outraged already, many of Hillary's supporters were waiting for a reason to raise a ruckus, and you just gave them one. A righteous one. They were already screaming for Clinton to go to Denver. Now the decibel level is ear shattering.
"McCain will be the next president..."
..."Two winners in 40 years."
Over 4 delegates?
Look, let's call this what it is: insanity.
I don't really know if Ms. Marsh believes what she's writing or not. But if she doesn't, and she's willing to feed other's insanity with this tripe, and she actually cares about her reproductive rights, then that qualifies as its own form of insanity.
Encouraging this kind of grudge-holding with this measly set of lies is dangerous and, in this case, it's self-destructive. We all know that the rules committee just handed Clinton five net delegates from Michigan after promising Obama that the contest would not count. Even taking his name off the ballot wasn't enough to protect him from this injustice. And he had the votes on the committee to get an even split of the delegates and turned it down. Why did he turn it down? Well...one interpretation is that he turned it down as an act of magnanimity, so that there would be a larger margin in favor of the decision, and as a gesture of good will. The other interpretation is that if he went along with calling the primary valid in any way, the Clintons would insist on counting the popular vote. But they're doing that anyway. Taylor has inverted the entire meaning of the decision on Michigan. Why are the Clintons throwing a tantrum over 4 lousy delegates? Why did Obama have to suffer any disadvantage at all after the Rules Committee promised him that the primary would not count?

Fernando
booman had it figured awhile ago. He was trying to be loyal to someone who helped him but could not any more. I guess everyone has their last straw.
But his blog has always been for Obama.
This just goes to show you how dishonest the Clintons have been. I have not seen any vitriol from the Obama campaign but the Clinton people just want the fight.
It has nothing to do with gender. There will be a woman as president, but it has to be the right woman.
I'll say this again. I don't like Hillary. I don't like what her campaign has done to the democrats. The way she is running her campaign. She wants to be president so badly that she doesn't care that she is deviding people. This has gone on too long and has done an injustice to all voters.
If she wins, I will hold my nose and vote for her in the general only because she is an inch better than McCain. But I will not expect much from her presidency.
What we need now is a veto proof majority in the two houses of congress. They are the ones that will make the changes anyway.
I'm sick of this! I'm sick of the primary race and I am sick of what has happened to Sam. And all because of greedy, power hungry people that are taking advantage of a situation.
Cindy a MILF?
Red State Update has the story.
Don't we have to declare drinking Budweiser as a campaign contribution now?
I know toniD
I also had regard for his work on Obama's own blog. The Marsh's and Johnson's of the world showed themselves a long time ago and have zero tolerance even from close personal friends for that kind of crap. We all learned a lot about the way they work from the Randi days.

Hillary Clinton to be offered dignified exit
By Tim Shipman in Washington
Hillary Clinton will be offered a dignified exit from the presidential race and the prospect of a place in Barack Obama's cabinet under plans for a "negotiated surrender" of her White House ambitions being drawn up by Senator Obama's aides.
The former First Lady would get the chance to pilot Mr Obama’s reforms of the American healthcare system if she agrees to clear the path to his nomination as Democratic presidential candidate.
Senior figures in the Obama camp have told Democrat colleagues that the offer to Mrs Clinton of a cabinet post as health secretary or to steer new legislation through the Senate will be a central element of their peace overtures to the New York senator.
Mr Obama said on Thursday that he believed he would have secured the support of enough delegates to make him the standard bearer of his party in November’s presidential election by the end of this week.

US accused of holding terror suspects on prison ships

The United States is operating "floating prisons" to house those arrested in its war on terror, according to human rights lawyers, who claim there has been an attempt to conceal the numbers and whereabouts of detainees.
Details of ships where detainees have been held and sites allegedly being used in countries across the world have been compiled as the debate over detention without trial intensifies on both sides of the Atlantic. The US government was yesterday urged to list the names and whereabouts of all those detained.
Information about the operation of prison ships has emerged through a number of sources, including statements from the US military, the Council of Europe and related parliamentary bodies, and the testimonies of prisoners.
The analysis, due to be published this year by the human rights organisation Reprieve, also claims there have been more than 200 new cases of rendition since 2006, when President George Bush declared that the practice had stopped.
It is the use of ships to detain prisoners, however, that is raising fresh concern and demands for inquiries in Britain and the US.

Sibel Edmonds Case: Dennis Hastert to receive payoffs for
'services rendered'
by Luke Ryland
So, former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds is again proved right. For more than a year Sibel has been predicting that Dennis Hastert will join a lobbying firm involved with Turkey, and now we learn that Hastert is joining Dickstein Shapiro.
In the "Representative Engagements" section of Dickstein's website, we learn that they represented "the government of Turkey in connection with the development and financing by private sponsors of the Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline and TransCaspian gas pipeline spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean."
Dennis Hastert, who is listed in Sibel's "Rogues Gallery," was caught on FBI wiretaps accepting bribes from Turkish criminal elements associated with the Turkish government, as documented in Vanity Fair in 2005 and elsewhere.
The following clip from Kill The Messenger, a documentary about Sibel's case, discusses some of Hastert's involvement as mentioned in Vanity Fair.
In researching the Vanity Fair article, journalist David Rose interviewed various congressional staffers and counter-intelligence officials who are familiar with the case. He reported that there were three separate types of bribes paid to Hastert:
1) "(T)ens of thousands of dollars to be paid to Hastert's campaign funds in small checks."
2) "(T)ens of thousands of dollars in surreptitious payments in exchange for political favors and information."
3) "(A)t least $500,000"

Someone needs to tell Obama to join another church, and fast.
For those of you who don't listen to the rumblings, the speculation is growing that he's Muslim now that he's no longer a member of a Christian church. I've had several conversations (I listen, they talk) with people thinking just that. Doing anything that causes uncertainty like this during a campaign is never a good idea. It would have been better to do nothing.
Say what you want, but resigning from that church without joining another is not a good thing to do in the middle of a campaign.
Payrolls Probably Fell for
Payrolls Probably Fell for Fifth Month: U.S. Economy Preview
By Shobhana Chandra
June 1 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. lost jobs for a fifth month in May and manufacturing contracted, signaling the economy is stagnating, economists said before reports this week.
Payrolls probably dropped by 60,000 workers, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News before the Labor Department's June 6 report. Figures tomorrow may show the Institute for Supply Management's factory index fell to 48.5 in May.
Credit restrictions triggered by foreclosures, along with soaring food and fuel prices, have caused spending to slow, prompting banks, construction companies and manufacturers to fire workers. Rising joblessness heightens the risk that consumers will keep retrenching, further hurting growth.
``The job market is really emphasizing how bad things are in the economy,'' said Lindsey Piegza, an economic analyst at FTN Financial in New York. ``Payroll declines will further weaken consumer spending.''
The projected decrease in May payrolls would follow a decline of 20,000 in April that brought the total number of jobs lost so far this year to 260,000. The jobless rate likely rose to 5.1 percent from 5 percent, according to the survey median.
Factory payrolls probably shrank by 40,000 workers, reflecting automakers' efforts to trim costs, according to the survey median.
General Motors Corp., the biggest U.S. automaker, said last week that 26 percent of its union workforce accepted the latest offer to leave the company and help clear out its highest-paid factory workers. About 19,000 of GM's United Auto Workers members signed up for the buyout packages, and most will stop working by July 1, the company said.

Murdered by Mugabe's mob
Tonderai Ndira will not be campaigning when Zimbabwe votes again. He will not rally his neighbourhood, as he did two months ago, for one last push against an unwanted regime. Instead, he is buried in an unmarked grave in the Warren Hills cemetery in Harare. A week on from his funeral, only his brother knows for sure which of the mounds is his. He will not leave a marker because he believes state agents are still not finished with the murdered activist. They would like to dig up his brother's remains to remove the incriminating evidence.
Mr Ndira's body was only found by accident in one of the capital's morgues a fortnight ago. His eyes had been gouged out and his tongue cut off. The 30-year-old was so badly beaten his father had trouble identifying him. A distinctive ring confirmed the identity of a man compared by some to South Africa's murdered rights activist, Steve Biko.
Mr Ndira, a lifelong campaigner for political change, had been arrested more than 30 times but kept up his opposition to the government that has led Zimbabweans to the lowest life expectancy in the world. His remains – a crushed skull, a bullet wound through the chest and blood-stained shorts – are a depressing metaphor for Zimbabwe in the aftermath of a stolen election.

Saudis Hit With $5B Lawsuit Over 9/11
Less than a mile from the mournful place in Lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center came crashing to the ground, in a hushed federal courthouse, a small band of Philadelphia lawyers is prying loose secrets of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
It is here that the Cozen O'Connor law firm has filed an 812-page lawsuit on behalf of U.S. and global insurance companies alleging that Saudi Arabia and Saudi-backed Islamic charities nurtured and financed the al-Qaeda, the author of those deadly attacks.
Led by its flinty chairman and founder, Stephen Cozen, the firm has invested thousands of hours and millions of dollars to scour the world for witnesses, documents and other evidence in its attempt to hold the oil-rich desert kingdom liable for more than $5 billion in damages.
Among the companies represented in the lawsuit are Chubb, Ace, Allstate, One Beacon, and nearly three dozen other insurers.
"Our concern was whether there was a viable case to be made against the defendant," Cozen said, "and whether the defendant could pay."
Round 1 in this titanic legal battle went to the Saudis and their high-powered lawyers three years ago when a U.S. District Court judge removed the government and Saudi royals as defendants.
Defense lawyers have declined repeated requests for interviews, citing the pending litigation. But in court papers, they describe Cozen's allegations as "fabrications" and note that the 9/11 Commission found no evidence of official Saudi involvement. Moreover, they point out that Saudi Arabia itself has been an al-Qaeda target.
"The showing that the plaintiffs purport to make is complete and utter garbage," said Michael Kellogg, a top Washington appeals lawyer representing Saudi Arabia and members of the royal family, during an appeals argument in January. "It is a collection of newspaper articles, and reports and press releases that show at most the kingdom exercises some supervisory control over the charities."

Israel to build new homes in occupied West Bank
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel announced plans on Sunday to build hundreds of new homes in an area of the occupied West Bank the Israeli government considers part of Jerusalem, despite U.S. and Palestinian calls to halt settlement expansion.
The announcement came two days before Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sets off for Washington for a three-day visit where he will meet U.S. President George W. Bush.
The 2003 peace "road map", reaffirmed by Israeli and Palestinian leaders at a conference hosted by Bush in November, requires a halt to all settlement activity on occupied land where Palestinians seek statehood.

Blast at Danish embassy in Pakistan
At least eight people have been reported dead and dozens injured after a large explosion outside the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
The suspected car bomb in the embassy's parking area caused extensive damage to the building and left a huge crater in the area on Monday.
Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from the scene, said that a number of bodies could be seen on the streets outside the embassy.
He said that the explosion happened at about 12.10pm [0710GMT] and security forces and ambulances attended the scene.
"Dozens of bodies are littered all over the place. The blast could be heard all over the city, and has literally taken the leaves off the trees ... and broken all the windows in adjoining areas," he reported.

unless he become's a southern baptist or whatever it is that falwell and robertson preach it doesn't really matter.
it really says a lot for how phony right wing religion is, the way that obama has been forced to quit his church.
Afghan children paying family debts
Al Jazeera has discovered that thousands of children, some as young as aged four, are being forced to work in brick factories in Afghanistan.
In the Sokhrod district in the east of the country, which is well known for producing bricks, there are about 38 factories and about 2,200 children are believed to be working in them.

Teresa Bo reports on Afghan child workers
"I don't want to do this with my life. I want to go to school, but I cannot because I am poor," 10-year-old Shafiq Ola told Al Jazeera.
"My family is in debt for $800 and I have to work."
Many of the children were forced into the brick factories after their parents became indebted to the owners.
"They are bonded labour, I am holding them," Mohamed Gul, the owner of one factory in the area near Jalalabad, said.
"They don't have any other option they have to, like a slave, work for me. Each family owes me thousands of aghanis [the Afghan currency]. They have to pay me with their work."

CIA claims 'al-Qaeda losing'
Michael Hayden, the head of the CIA, has said al-Qaeda is essentially defeated in Iraq and Saudi Arabia and is also on the defensive elsewhere.
Hayden told the Washington Post newspaper that a campaign to destabilise al-Qaeda's core leadership, believed to be in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan, had also been successful.
Hayden said on Thursday that major gains had been made against al-Qaeda's allies in the Middle East and Osama bin Laden, the group's leader, was also losing the battle for influence in the Islamic world.
Bin Laden had lost his ability to exploit the Iraq war to recruit new members, he said.
"On balance, we are doing pretty well," Hayden said, while warning that al-Qaeda remains a serious threat.
Hayden said both al-Qaeda in Iraq and al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia were facing "near strategic defeat".

The CIA chief said that globally, al-Qaeda had suffered "significant setbacks - as a lot of the Islamic world pushes back on their form of Islam".

Politics Is A Dirty Business

...I don't like what her campaign has done to the democrats. The way she is running her campaign. She wants to be president so badly that she doesn't care that she is dividing people.
---------
Some portion of her campaign tenor is attributable to being behind. It is generally true that candidates who are ahead have less incentive to be nasty and negative while candidates who are behind find themselves grasping at straws.
I'm not making excuses for Clinton's tactics but the campaign system, along with its tactical precedents, sucks. It is capable of turning friendly folks into ogres.
Whatever you think of Hillary Clinton, I think that it is reasonable to apportion some of her negative campaign methodology to the fact that she has been running from behind.
Who knows how an Obama campaign would have been waged if the circumstances had been reversed? No one. One of the advantages of being ahead is not having to reveal what a prick you can be.
