Bone drug Zometa helps fight breast cancer spread
Good News !
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer
CHICAGO - A drug to prevent bone loss during breast cancer treatment also substantially cut the risk that the cancer would return, results that left doctors excited about a possible new way to fight the disease.
It is the first large study to affirm wider anti-cancer hopes for Zometa and other bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates. Zometa, made by Novartis AG, is used now for cancers that have already spread to the bone.

How Big A Let Down Have The Democrats Been?
By DownWithTyranny
Well... alas, pretty big. In the new issue of Rolling Stone Tim Dickinson takes on the Democratic Senate leadership. Below I want to talk anecdotally about some Democratic Party letdowns but first take a look at what ex-Democrat/current independent candidate for Congress, Steve Porter has to say and let's look at some of Dickinson's most salient points. He points out what a shill NY reptile Chuck Schumer has been for crooked billionaire Wall Street operators, "championing one of the biggest tax breaks for billionaires in the history of the republic [as] Democrats in the House fought to close a loophole that levies a tax rate of only 15 percent... on hedge-fund managers who make as much as $3.7 billion a year. But when the debate reached the Senate, Schumer broke with his fellow Democrats and sided with Wall Street-- inspiring the hedge-fund industry to hail him as its 'guardian.'"

Monks Succeed in Cyclone Relief as Junta Falters
If any good can ever come out of this natural disaster, it's the rural communities relating to the Buddhist Monks as naturally evolving local relief group.
In Burma, the UN says the military junta continues to deny unfettered access to areas devastated by Cyclone Nargis. Aid officials have been barred from several parts of the Irrawaddy region where the cyclone’s impact was worst. At least 130,000 people are dead or missing.

British pensioners who cannot afford to heat their homes. European hauliers and fishermen whose livelihoods are under threat. Palestinians forced to fill up their cars with olive oil. Americans asked to go down to a four-day week.
All around the world, in a multitude of ways, the soaring price of oil is hurting rich and poor alike. For the lucky ones, it is simply a matter of changing their lifestyle. But those most vulnerable to the price of oil have been driven on to the streets in angry protests, which raise a fundamental question: what can we do to survive in a world where a barrel of oil costs $127 (£64)?
Great Britain
The rise in the oil price could not come at a worse time for Gordon Brown. After a week that has seen hauliers blocking roads and air passengers facing higher surcharges, yesterday it was the impact on fuel bills that came to the fore. The Prime Minister's attempt to ease the pain felt by pensioners and low-income families from rising fuel bills was dismissed as a "sticking plaster to hold back a catastrophe". It consists mainly of advice on coping with the cost of heating rather than extra money.
The number of Britons in "fuel poverty" – 10 per cent of their income goes on energy – is thought to have reached four million. The average annual household bill for heat and light is now more than £1,000. The Government plans to reform data protection laws so that low-income families can be contacted directly by the companies and offered help. The aim is to ensure that the "social tariffs" get to the people that need them most.
Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, said the energy suppliers had agreed to increase "social assistance" from £50m a year to £150m by 2011. The money will be used to switch consumers to lower tariffs and insulate homes.
Kate Jopling, the head of public affairs at the charity Help the Aged, described the measures as a "sticking plaster to hold back a catastrophe". She said: "While it is welcome news ... this initiative does not go nearly far enough to deal with the looming fuel poverty crisis."
The Government's announcement came at the end of the week in which Mr Brown saw a rerun of the political crisis he faced in his early years as Chancellor. Lorry drivers blockaded roads into London and in Wales to demand that a planned 2p rise in fuel tax be scrapped and that "essential users" should be granted a rebate. The only time between the 1997 and 2001 elections when the Labour government looked vulnerable was when Mr Brown suspended rises in fuel taxes after a similar blockade.
Separately yesterday, Britain's Silverjet airline announced it had stopped flights after failing to get a $5m loan from Abu Dhabi-based investors, becoming the third London to New York business class-only carrier to run out of money.
Europe
Luxembourg's Finance Minister, Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the commission of European Union finance ministers, issued a call to all EU governments yesterday to hold their nerve and avoid the temptation to use the tax system to relieve the misery of high oil prices. He reminded them that, when they met in Manchester in 2005, they agreed that such a move would encourage demand and send the wrong message to oil producers.
That is not what France's President, Nicolas Sarkozy, wanted to hear yesterday, after a week of protests by French truckers and fishermen left several motorways blocked and ports paralysed. M. Sarkozy suggested capping fuel taxes if the oil price rose further.
In the Netherlands, the protests caused less inconvenience, but made more noise when, at 11.45am on Thursday, lorry drivers across the country simultaneously blew their horns in protest at diesel prices. In Bulgaria, lorry and bus drivers launched a joint protest.
The protest spread to the seas yesterday, as fishermen across Europe went on a one-day strike, blocking ports. The biggest demonstrations were in Spain and Portugal where 10,000 protesters converged on Madrid. Some handed out free fish to underline their point that, with the current cost of fuel, they are practically giving their catches away. Passers-by pushed and shoved to get their hands on the free hake.
Meanwhile, the Newcastle to Scandinavia ferry route is being cut by the Danish company DFDS Seaways, who said it was a loss-making service incapable of being turned around. The company blamed "dramatically increasing oil prices, over-capacity in the travel marketplace and the economic slowdown".
The United States
There are signs that the fuel crisis is persuading Americans to think about leaving the car in the garage. In March this year, the number of miles driven by American motorists was 11 billion fewer than in March 2007, according to the Transportation Department. That is the sharpest drop year on year that the department has ever recorded, and the first fall of any kind recorded in the month of March since 1979.
The US Energy Department projects that this year, domestic gas consumption will drop by 190,000 barrels a day and overall petroleum use by 330,000 barrels a day, the first annual fall since 1991. But those figures look less impressive when expressed as percentages. Eleven billion fewer miles is a drop of 4.3 per cent and 330,000 barrels is less than 1 per cent of the country's total daily consumption.
Even so, this is good news for the environment, since the US's greenhouse gas emissions fell by nine million tonnes in the first quarter of 2008. And insurance companies report a sharp drop in road accidents.
An increasing number of employers, anxious to keep their staff, are offering them the option of working longer but fewer days, to cut out journeys to work. There is a plan to offer public employees on New York's Long Island the opportunity to work four 10-hour days, instead of five eight-hour days – a move which, it is reckoned, would save more than 30 barrels of oil a day. When Kent State University, in Ohio, offered this opportunity to 94 security staff, 78 of them snapped it up.
But the changing travelling habits have created problems for America's bus and subway systems, which are having to cope with a sudden increase in passengers at the same time that they are paying more for fuel. In Eugene, Oregon, 16 per cent more people took the bus this month than in April, but the town's main bus company, Lane Transit District, is losing money and cannot afford to expand.
Airlines, which are struggling to break even, are reluctant to raise the price of tickets and are introducing fees for baggage handling instead. American Airlines has slapped a $16 fee on the first piece of baggage checked in by economy-class passengers. Other airlines have followed.
But Southwest Airlines, in California, is laughing, because it took a gamble at the start of the year and bought 70 per cent of the fuel it estimated it would need in a full year for a paltry $51 a barrel – two-fifths of the current price. It is probably the only US airline that will be able to make a profit without increasing charges.
In Northern California, one man thought he had found a way to profit from the crisis. He was spotted rummaging around in the garbage behind a Burger King, with a tube and a storage bin. When police caught up with him, they found that he had 2,500 gallons of used fryer grease stolen from various restaurants. Chip pan fat is worth more than four times what it was a few years ago, making that haul worth more than £3,000.
Outside Seattle, the owner of a pizza restaurant is thinking of installing a CCTV camera over its 50-gallon cooking-oil barrel to keep rustlers away. "Fryer grease has become gold," its owner, Nick Damianidis, told The New York Times. "And just over a year ago, I had to pay someone to take it away."

Angry, hungry people in America's cities, taking it to the streets in the most violent of ways. Fire everywhere. They just can't keep up with the burning buildings. Naturally, our governments react only to try to control the raging populace and beat them down. Trying to fix the problems was out of the question because the biggest of wigs are making big bucks on all of it. So much destruction. Blood in the streets. Your grandma gets beaten by the cops and dies. One good thing comes out of the horror. You don't see so many huge lardasses walking around. They are all dead and some of them have been eaten. Ugh!

The biggest force behind the Michigan move is Democratic Senator Carl Levin, who has been irritated for years that a big state like his has been taking a back seat to smaller states. Iowa and New Hampshire get all the attention, in addition to millions of dollars from the campaigns and the media, who keep their restaurants and hotels full, their rental cars on the road and their television stations flush with cash from ads.

Pat Buchanan comment on Scot McClellend
Buchanan called McClellend "A JUDAS".
Now, you can't have a Judas unless you have a Jesus.
Who's Jesus in this allusion? It's George W. Bush!
This isn't the first time an emperor like Bush has been referred to as a 'divinity'.
During the Roman Era -- the time Jesus is said to have been living -- the Romans lost their republic to the forces of tyranny. It was Octavian (nephew of Julius Caesar) through years of systematic removal of his opposition (through exile, by assassinating, intimidating, confiscating personal property, arresting on trumped up charges, etc.) and finally the defeat of Marc Antony, turned the republic into an Empire with himself, Octavian, as the Emperor Augustus. Once he was emperor, temples were erected to worship him.
This "Cult of the Emperor" seems to be alive now. In the Bush temples, however, the statues will need to show Bush nude because we know the emperor has no clothes.

It Seems to me
that the only solution is a tiered nationwide primary...I went to my state caucus and was NOT able to vote for who I wanted...Edwards...my choice had been decided by the earlier state votes...that is fundamentally unfair in a primary... we should have a nationwide primary to narrow the field down to 5 or so, then several months later have another that narrows the field again to anyone with over 30% or so support then at the convention choose through delegates the strongest candidate...It will cost more money and we will have to vote more than once, but we will also arrive at a candidate that represents the entire democratic party....just saying...
Hillary, Ickes... Liars!
When will an Obama supporter ask this very important question about "principles?"

Not Enough Is Being Said About Speculation
http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/30/news/economy/oil_cftc/?postversion=20080...
Oil trading probe may uncover manipulation
But overall, any wrongdoing is likely to play a small part in soaring crude prices. Meanwhile, speculators aren't expected to hang.
By Steve Hargreaves, CNNMoney.com staff writer
Last Updated: May 31, 2008: 10:28 AM EDT
---------------
Speculation is not illegal. Markets need oversight and regulation capable of acting swiftly to prevent capitalism from cannibalizing itself.
The recent credit crisis is the result of new investment vehicles and techniques being introduced into the market without regulatory oversight. The market does not always know best.
The claim that oil prices have escalated because the supply is static while demand is increasing is only partially true.
The demand for purchasing futures in oil increased. Huge amounts of money began to flow into oil futures speculation after oil began to rise slightly. More demand for purchasing oil futures = higher prices for oil futures = higher prices for oil.
This may seem terribly esoteric, but there is a distinct difference between the demand for oil and the demand for oil futures though an increase in the demand for either, or both, results in higher oil prices.
Despite the new demands for oil placed on the market by China and India and nearby regions, the new demand is not five times what it was nor will it be five times what it was anytime soon. And yet the price of oil IS five times what it was.
Why? The demand for purchasing oil futures is much more than five times what it was. It is dozens upon dozens more than it was. The more futures they buy, the more the price of oil rises and the easier and less risky it is (or appears to be) to make more money by buying more oil futures.
Oil future speculation is not the only reason for the increasing price of oil, nor was it necessarily the trigger that began the recent rapid rise, but I believe that speculation in the futures market is much more responsible for what we are witnessing than is being claimed by the "experts".
It is a perfect example of a bubble-like rise in price that could have been short circuited by a regulatory agency with the power to suspend the futures market long enough to allow it to cool.
But the Conservatives and the laissez-faire marketeers and the Republicans fight tooth and nail against any type of market regulation.
The mortgage crisis and the subsequent credit crisis, followed by the oil crisis, ought to be enough to make the "let the market decide" idiots see the light.

Re: MI primary
"It's clear, this election they're having is not going to count for anything." - Hillary Clinton
My friend who is a genius sez that the DNC rules committee
made a ruling devised to punish Mi and Fl for VIOLATING the primary rules (scheduling a super early primary vote in those states). The punishment was that there would be NO Dem campaigning -- the campaigns being big revenue moneystreams for a state. THAT, my friend maintains, was the punishment. It had nothing to do with taking candidates' names off the ballot or not counting the subsequent votes. The punishment was not to deny the vote count.
I don't know if he's correct, but it sounds okay. Is this the Clinton argument?

Strong Backing for Ex-Governor's Appeal (54 Former State AG's File Brief Supporting Seigelman)
By ADAM NOSSITER
Published: May 31, 2008
Fifty-four former state attorneys general filed a brief Friday supporting the appeal of former Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, convicted two years ago on bribery and corruption charges in a prosecution depicted by his supporters as politically motivated. Robert Abrams, a former New York attorney general and an author of the brief, said the document was unprecedented in bringing together a large number of former top state judicial officers, mostly Democrats but also some Republicans. Mr. Abrams said it reflected “strong feelings” that an injustice had been done to Mr. Siegelman, a Democrat who was freed on bond from a federal prison in March after serving nine months.
Last year, 44 of the former attorneys general petitioned Congress to look into the Siegelman case, which a House committee is now doing.

the states' Primary elections should all be on one day
Enough of this campaign spending dominating the primaries (as well as the general elections).
Really, it's not the issues that states seem to be concerned about, but how much campaign money a candidate spends in their state prior to the election.
If the primary election occurred on one day for all states, following a number of sanely-arranged, issue-centered, accessible network media broadcast debates, it would make more sense.
John Conyers could

Last Show On Air America
But who cares about Air America anymore?
Laura and Sam are the last remnants of a once vital network. Mark Green knows nothing about what makes good leftwing radio. He wouldn't know leftwing if it smacked him in the behind. 'Oh Barack Obama, he is just a community organizer'. Really, Mark?
First they replaced Randy Rhodes with Joyce Behar, and then Roseanne Barr (see where they're going with this?), because Randi doesn't have a fanbase, no, she has 'a demographic'.
Then, he gets rid of 'the future of Air America' (in the words of Al Franken), Sam Seder.
Well I say - good riddance to Air America, and it's incompetent management, which as always is 'more avarice than inspiration' (to borrow a phrase from Thomas Harris).
So what shows are left on Air America? There is Laura Flanders on the weekends.
I don't listen to Lionel. (What a perfect reflection of Mark Green he is.)
Thom Hartmann - I always listen to, but I listen to him on NovaM Radio, so I don't have to switch over when Randi Rhodes comes on.
Rachel Maddow. Hmmm... Nowadays I listen to Jeff Farias on NovaM too. I switch between the two a lot.
Then Mike Malloy - also on NovaM, of course.
And by the way, I think Sam needs a good co-host. The technical staff doesn't really do. They certainly don't replace Janeane Garofalo - not by a long shot.
FINALLY!
Some reason from the committee! Who is this guy?
Here's what Clinton wants:
[Primary was] not flawed as long as we penalize Obama for following the rules.
I wonder
if Sam will continue to be the editor of AAR's website if they don't give him the job. It's disgusting the way their auditioning maron against him,as well as others.
I like maron a lot but sam is,without a doubt, the next in line for the empty time slot.Boy i wish novam would hire him so he could make a 'clean' break from AAR.
Blanchard... we want party unity...
what a joke.
We want to break rules and be rewarded for it.
And listen to those Clinton hacks.... it's okay to break the rules! It's okay! As long as MY candidate wins.

Ok, this is probably really dumb but...is it really only one "guy" on duty at a time? (I mean there has to be more than one person overall,a detail or whatever, but...) Couldn't Karl Rove just keep running away from one guy with a gun? I mean, he'd probably have advance notice, right? If Congress can't put out an APB/BOLO, does this really work? It seems like he wouldn't even have to leave the country to get away, just keep "not being in."
Can they deputize people?
And, I heard on Randi that technically they even gave that power away. J. Edgar convinced them (surprise!).
Yes Donna Brazile!

well said.Sam is gone and the only show i can stomach is 'ring of fire'.
--------------------------
Sam always lasers right to the heart of each topic. Sam wastes no time. Sam consistently covers the most important issues and does so thoroughly. And Sam's interviews are THE best, superb.
I agree, closest thing to Sam is Ring of Fire. However, the RofF guys lack interview skills. Like Hartmann, they don't let the guest (the expert/expert witness/authority) extrapolate with the majority of the time allotted for the interview. With RFK2 and Pap (and Hartmann is guilty of this also), the guest gets cut off and one never gets the full extent of the expert's information/contribution. Interviews where the interviewer wants equal time are usually a BIG frustration and disappointment. (Ego-bags don't make good interviewers; they need to learn some humility in the presence of another expert....).
Oh, I miss Sam.
What slot would NovaM promote for a live Sam show? I keep asking myslef that question. What slot would their sort of home station KPHK Phoenix give Sam. It appears problematic; they have a popular line-up now. Yet I agree, I would prefer Sam got out from under Green et al and their not subtle DLC/Hillary point of view.
Florida's Democratic Leaders expect a satisfactory resolution
After the Florida portion of the meeting was finished, I watched an impromptu press conference in the lobby of the Marriott that included Jon Ausman, Senator Nelson, former Senator Graham, Rep. Wexler and a couple other Florida Democrats. The theme was one of unity. Ausman said he could accept Rep. Wexler's proposal for seating the Florida superdelegates with 1/2 vote each. Generally, the theme was one of unity. The speakers gave the sense that they feel there will be a resolution from the Rules Committee today that will make satisfy most of them. Avi Zenilman has a similar report.

Re: Hillary said she would take her name off...
"...The punishment was not to deny the vote count."
-------
It's a good theory, but as this is a public issue that can only carry so far. They still have to give the appearance of issuing some form of "punishment" to those who decided to move their primaries anyway, and appease as many voters in those states as they can.
My gut says they'll split the delegates to match the current national split, then allow the supers to do as they wish. I would far rather they just followed the rules, and make sure it's CLEAR that it's because of those who decided to move it in the first place; revoke their super-status, and banish them to a remote island with nothing more than sporks to survive.
Voices of a People's History is a big hit in Portland, Oregon
Portland was the latest city to host a performance of Voices of a People's History of the United States, the primary-source companion to Howard Zinn's best-selling A People's History of the United States.
The book features the words of rebels, dissenters and visionaries from our past -- and present.
The Portland performance included readings by actor Viggo Mortensen, performance poet Staceyann Chin, singer Shontina Vernon, musician Eddie Vedder, poet and musician Trevino L. Brings Plenty, actor Michael Ealy, Portland student activist Sarah Levy, editor and author Anthony Arnove, and other actors and activists.

"After years as a teacher and social worker, I turned seriously to painting, which throughout my life had sparked and enlivened my spirit," Ms. Zinn wrote in a brief introduction to "Painting Life," a collection of her work that was published last year, a few months after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. "What I see in the world, so burdened and troubled, and yet beautiful in nature and in the human form, impels me to seek to create images that give the possibility of hope."
A glorious spray of tulips, the gentle curve of an unclothed hip, the deep smile lines etched around her husband's mouth - Ms. Zinn's brush found in each of her subjects a sense of serenity and promise. And those same qualities, present in her along with a radiant delight in life, impressed those she met her during her long marriage to historian Howard Zinn as they walked arm in arm in marches protesting wars from Vietnam to Iraq.

Two weeks before Ms. Zinn died, she told Carlsson-Paige during a visit that she had just finished two paintings. In one, Ms. Zinn sensed a need for something more.
"She said, 'I had to put an apple in it,' which I saw - it's this beautiful yellow apple," said Carlsson-Paige, who asked her friend whether she was pleased with the paintings. "And she said, 'Oh, I'm very happy with them.' She was just completely joyful."

Hmmm, I'm mulling that one. I don't think I agree with that sentiment. I've read some of his books and I don't think that Mr. Zinn would appeal to idiots. You should rethink that statement, in my opinion, of course. It did convey an ample expression of anger, though.

Death Penalty for Bush?
http://counterpunch.org/ccr05312008.html
Bugliosi Makes the Case
By CORPORATE CRIME REPORTER
If Vincent Bugliosi were prosecuting George W. Bush for the murder of the more than 4,000 American soldiers who have died in Iraq, he would seek the death penalty.
“If I were the prosecutor, there is no question I would seek the death penalty,” Bugliosi told Corporate Crime Reporter in a wide-ranging interview.
Bugliosi is the author of the just published book The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder (Vanguard Press, 2008).
“I’m urging here that an American jury try George Bush for first degree murder. I want to see him on trial for murder before an American jury. And if they convict him, it will be up to the jury to decide what his punishment is. One of the options would be the imposition of the death penalty. If I were prosecuting him, absolutely I would seek the death penalty. As Governor of Texas, George Bush signed death warrants – 152 out of 152 – most of them for people who only committed one murder.”
Bugliosi said he is sending a copy of his book to all fifty state Attorneys General, offering his assistance in prosecuting Bush for homicide.
“I’m herein enclosing a copy of my book The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder,” Bugliosi writes in the letter to the Attorneys General. “I hope you will find the time to read it and that you will agree with its essential conclusion – that George W. Bush is guilty of murder for the deaths of over 4,000 American soldiers who have died fighting his war in Iraq.”
...
I hope Obama
Makes Vincent Bugliosi his attorney general. The only problem would be there aren't enough nooses around for all the convictions that would follow.

To me, discussing his ideas as much relevance than discussing how many angles are dancing on the head of a pin.

Excerpt from 'The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla'
By Stephen King
PROLOGUE: ROONT
ONE
Tian was blessed (though few farmers would have used such a word) with three patches: River Field, where his family had grown rice since time out of mind; Roadside Field, where ka-Jaffords had grown sharproot, pumpkin, and corn for those same long years and generations; and Son of a (expletive), a thankless tract which mostly grew rocks, blisters, and busted hopes. Tian wasn't the first Jaffords determined to make something of the twenty acres behind the home place; his Gran-pere, perfectly sane in most other respects, had been convinced there was gold there. Tian's Ma had been equally positive it would grow porin, a spice of great worth. Tian's particular insanity was madrigal. Of course madrigal would grow in Son of a (expletive). Must grow there. He'd gotten hold of a thousand seeds (and a dear penny they had cost him) that were now hidden beneath the floorboards of his bedroom. All that remained before planting next year was to break ground in Son of a (expletive). This chore was easier spoken of than accomplished.
Clan Jaffords was blessed with livestock, including three mules, but a man would be mad to try using a mule out in Son of a (expletive); the beast unlucky enough to draw such duty would likely be lying legbroke or stung to death by noon of the first day. One of Tian's uncles had almost met this latter fate some years before. He had come running back to the home place, screaming at the top of his lungs and pursued by huge mutie wasps with stingers the size of nails.
They had found the nest (well, Andy had found it; Andy wasn't bothered by wasps no matter how big they were) and burned it with kerosene, but there might be others. And there were holes. Yer-bugger, plenty o' them, and you couldn't burn holes, could you? No. Son of a (expletive) sat on what the old folks called "loose ground." It was consequently possessed of almost as many holes as rocks, not to mention at least one cave that puffed out draughts of nasty, decay-smelling air. Who knew what boggarts and speakies might lurk down its dark throat?

Meet South America's New Secessionists
http://counterpunch.org/kozloff05302008.html
From a Texan-Venezuelan to an Ecuadorian Giuliani
By NIKOLAS KOZLOFF
Having failed to halt the tide of South America’s Pink Tide, Washington is seeking to cultivate relationships with secessionist leaders in order to facilitate the breakup of countries which share left leaning governments. In Bolivia, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has explicitly supported demands of the political opposition for greater regional autonomy in the eastern section of the country and has funneled millions of dollars to the right.
It’s an inflammatory move which has incited a diplomatic firestorm throughout the region. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, an important ally of the Morales government in La Paz, has said that his country will not stand for secession in Bolivia’s eastern lowland states. The stage now seems set for confrontation, as Bolivia's largest and richest state overwhelmingly backed a referendum calling for greater autonomy earlier this month.
Chávez declared that his government has not meddled in the domestic affairs of other Latin American nations, but would do so if Bolivian states now seeking greater autonomy from Bolivia's central government push for total independence. On his weekend radio and television program, the Venezuelan leader blamed "oligarchs" and "fascists" in Bolivia for the unrest.
"The CIA and its lackeys" aimed at seizing control of regional governments through illegal referendums, Chávez said, "but we will defeat that plan through integration, political union and ideological strength."
News of the secession movement in Bolivia has alarmed the Venezuelan authorities. It’s not difficult to see why: in western Venezuela, the right wing opposition is pushing for greater autonomy from the central government. In response to the political crisis in Bolivia, Chávez likened opposition efforts to win control of states near Venezuela's border with Colombia to "separatist" moves in the impoverished Andean nation to the south. With secession rapidly turning into a worrisome political dilemma for regional governments, right wing opposition figures are now coming to the fore.
Who are these secession leaders who wish to derail South America’s Pink Tide?

Watch and Learn
I've never seen Zinn that way myself
I think of him primarily as someone who is at his best pointing out where the bodies are buried, long after the "winners" have re-written history. Most everything Zinn-related i've experienced has been historical in nature, and talking about what he thinks it says about society and how to try and prevent it from continuing to happen. I've never seen him advocate anarchy, though. And none of it precludes discussing what's going on now in the DNC rules committee.
Chubbs has a shitty attitude

You are correct.Dean did say Country, not party.Msnbc(general electric) is as much of a joke as fox news and all they care about are ratings.
Well here I am sitting under the mushroom
I watched this event today from the DNC RBC and thought to myself … self I have a pretty good understanding of this…HA what a moron. What I see here is a group that has delegated those they want to hear from and those they don’t. They want diversity and fairness so we look at a state as diverse as Florida and decide the Republicans there did a very bad thing moving the primary up and took away the Democrat Party delegates.
Oh…the very bad thing that New Hampshire did by moving its vote up to be second against the wishes of the rules committee. I mean diversity be damned it is all good. Oh and when the Republicans in South Carolina did a very bad thing and moved up the primary well shucks that was them there bad Republicans.
We had a President that with the aid of a constitutional body barred from entering into a state election process do just that only for a second and then said we unrang that bell and it can never be done again. We disenfranchise votes and ignore their wishes in an effort to manipulate the system. We have another constitutional body led by a woman paralyzed with fear not able to enforce the laws of the land against an administration that has morally dipped lower than many third world nations I can think of.
They spoke today about being in touch with those on the ground and how important we are. Let me tell ya I am on the ground sitting next to the mushrooms that are getting fed regular by all those great folks helping me.

Yes!Great launch. It always hits me that us humans are capable of such great things(the shuttle) and then i think of all the hell that is modern day earth and i just get depressed. How can a species so capable of beautiful kindness be capable of such horrible nightmares?
Re: Wolves of the Calla
Oh Man, the audiobooks of the Dark Series are Excellent.
The First Three are read by Frank Muller, the remaining by George Guiddell.
The two very best readers I believe.
Also "Little Sisters of Eluria" is read by Muller
A torrent site called demonoid.com has Thousands of audiobooks. All the King and Koontz and Saul and Tolkien you could want.
If you would like me to get you an invite code I would be happy too.
To me, Nothing is more relaxing than a good audiobook.
I still say Wizard and Glass is the Best book I have ever listened to. Truely an amazing Love story, and from a Man who is supposedly the King of Horror.
So few realize that most of King's works are not horror. More Fantasy IMO.
IMO he is by far the best at Character developement. So good in fact, that even a dull plot is hard to put down.
Also Dolores Claiborne and Rose Red on audio are Fab. Beyond Fab.
Dolores Claiborne is probably the second best book I've ever listened too. Amazing!
The Film is OK too
Just finished his brand new one "Duma Key"
Twas good indeed. Have you done "Blaze" yet.
Absolutely amazing. Truthfully I liked it better than Duma. The audio performance is astonashing.
There is also a short out called Gingerbread Girl.
And of course King's son Joe Hill has released "Heart Shape Box" and "20th Century Ghosts" The latter is a composition of shorts and novellas.
and yep, he is definately carrying the torch.
He will be the next Horror master. He allready makes Koontz look like an amatuer IMO.

mhappenow,
I don't believe in the short term justice-dealing aspect of karma...at least not until there is a resurgence of leprosy.
The long term aspect doesn't appeal to me either. What good is justice if we cannot witness it? If one self-absorbed man reincarnates as a cockroach, one man learns a lesson. If one self-absorbed man instantly becomes a cockroach, everyone learns a lesson.

John Saul - Black Lightening
Audio Books : Horror : MP3/128Kbps : English
Not my rip....but great quality.
Book Description:
For five years Seattle journalist Anne Jeffers has pursued the horrifying story of a sadistic serial killer's bloody reign, capture, trial, and appeal--crusading to keep the wheels of justice churning toward the electric chair. Now the day of execution has come. A convicted killer will meet his end. Anne believes her long nightmare is over. But she's dead wrong. . .
From Publishers Weekly
Fast pacing and skillful narrative misdirection make this supernatural thriller one of Saul's best, and one of his few not to focus on children in peril. Richard Kraven, the novel's heavy, is as nasty as they come: he eviscerates his victims before they die, in the misguided hope of learning the mystery of life. He also seems to be extending his murder spree after his execution in the electric chair. At least that's what reporter Anne Jeffers tries to prove to the incredulous Seattle police as the killings strike ever closer to her home and family, apparently in retaliation for her help in putting Kraven behind bars. Saul ratchets up the suspense by intercutting chapters told from the points of view of Anne, detective Mark Blakemoor and a serial murderer who thinks of himself as "The Experimenter." He complicates matters by introducing another murderer and by raising suspicions about Anne's husband, Glen, who suffered a heart attack at the moment Kraven died and now experiences blackouts that coincide with the killings. Saul depends on remarkably unobservant cops and a contrived occult explanation to tie all the subplots together, but he sustains the mystery of the killer's identity and motives throughout.

Bob: I didn't realize that Demonoid was back up! I'm a fan of audio books as well, and listen mainly since my only time to "read" is during my hour+ commute each way. A good MP3 player makes for happier drive times.
I mostly enjoy King when he reads it himself. It takes a Maine-er to do those voices. And i'll be listening again in one month, when i drive a truck from the San Francisco to Portland, Maine. I'll be loaded with audio then. I was hoping to have a new sat radio for Sammy's new show but that's not looking likely. :'(

Answer: It goes like this perhaps:
top campaign fundraising > top campaign $pending > top revenues to states and media > leading exposure to voters/viewership and increased NameRecognition/ImageBought > top vote tallies = the one with the purchased exposure wins
Hillary is BUSTING this established equation by creating high Name Recognition through name exposure by means of (false?) CONTROVERSY instead of spending campaign cash she doesn't have because noone wants to give her any. WOW, the Clintons are the most corrupt gamers in an already corrupt game.

karma has no part of justice in it
it is simply cause and effect..can't argue with that can you Crank...
the justice issue is the Christian spin..
The philosophical explanation of karma can differ slightly between traditions, but the general concept is basically the same. Through the law of karma, the effects of all deeds actively create past, present, and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to him/her and others. The results or 'fruits' of actions are called karma-phala. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karma
Happiness and misery, which are the common lot of humanity, are the inevitable effects of causes. From a Buddhist point of view, they are not rewards and punishments, assigned by a supernatural, omniscient ruling power to a soul that has done good or evil. Theists, who attempt to explain everything in this and temporal life and in the eternal future life, ignoring a past, believe in a ‘postmortem’ justice, and may regard present happiness and misery as blessings and curses conferred on His creation by an omniscient and omnipotent Divine Ruler who sits in heaven above controlling the destinies of the human race. Buddhism, which emphatically denies such an Almighty, All merciful God-Creator and an arbitrarily created immortal soul, believes in natural law and justice which cannot be suspended by either an Almighty God or an All-compassionate Buddha. According to this natural law, acts bear their own rewards and punishments to the individual doer whether human justice finds out or not.

Even Bush's crap is classified top secret. According to our Austrian sources, Austrian newspapers are currently abuzz with special security details of George W. Bush's recent trip to Vienna. Although the heavy-handed Gestapo-like security measures meted out to Viennese home owners, business proprietors, and pedestrians by US Secret Service agents and local police before and during Bush's visit received widespread Austrian media attention, it was White House "toilet security" ("TOILSEC"), which has Austrians talking the most.
The White House flew in a special portable toilet to Vienna for Bush's personal use during his visit. The Bush White House is so concerned about Bush's security, the veil of secrecy extends over the president's bodily excretions. The special port-a-john captured Bush's feces and urine and flew the waste material back to the United States in the event some enterprising foreign intelligence agency conducted a sewage pipe operation designed to trap and examine Bush's waste material. One can only wonder why the White House is taking such extraordinary security measures for the presidential poop.

The DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee met today to try and hammer out a solution to the problem of how to apportion Michigan and Florida's delegates.
There were many fireworks, but a compromise seems to be holding for Florida, where Clinton will take away a net gain of 19 delegates.
Michigan remains less clear. Clinton's Camp is fighting tooth and nail to seat all of the delegates in her favor, even though Obama's name wasn't even on the Michigan ballot.
Carl Levin, and the Michigan state Democratic party had suggested a compromise, giving Clinton a net gain of 10 delegates. The split would effectively kill Hillary's final chance of winning the nomination.
The hearing has been highly partisan, as one might expect. The big question now is how the committee will decide Michigan.

U.S. Deaths in Iraq Plunge to Lowest Level in Four Years
BAGHDAD — U.S. military deaths plunged in May to the lowest monthly level in more than four years and civilian casualties were down sharply, too, as Iraqi forces assumed the lead in offensives in three cities and a truce with Shiite extremists took hold.
But many Iraqis as well as U.S. officials and private security analysts are uncertain whether the current lull signals a long-term trend or is simply a breathing spell like so many others before.

Every Thursday Night, Liberal Politics and Pints

Published: June 1, 2008
On Thursday night in Hell’s Kitchen, an impassioned discussion of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s remarks about the Bobby Kennedy assassination as a reason for her staying in the presidential race took place in the backyard of Rudy’s Bar and Grill. Across the yard, Rachel Maddow, a host on Air America Radio, poured glasses of beer for a table of friends and debated Senator John McCain’s war record.
Among the regular patrons at the bar on Ninth Avenue were a few unsuspecting tourists. Dozens of people were squeezed together talking politics, drinking beer and eating free hot dogs. The conversation was cut short for an anniversary toast.
“To many more years, and many more chapters,” said Justin Krebs, 30. Mr. Krebs was one of the founders of the progressive social networking group called Drinking Liberally that has been meeting at Rudy’s every Thursday night for the past five years.
“We knew our friends wanted to talk about politics and the state of the country, but it felt like that was a taboo thing to do in a social setting,” Mr. Krebs said. “We wanted to create an environment where people would be told that politics is not off the table — that in fact, it’s what we’re here for,” said Mr. Krebs, a founder of The Tank, a nonprofit space for performance and public-affairs events in Midtown.
In the beginning, Mr. Krebs and his partner in starting the club, Matthew O’Neill, 30, would show up on Thursday, with just the two of them sharing a pitcher of beer. Since then, online social networking has helped the group grow into a national organization with 250 chapters across the country, at least one in each state.
“Eight years ago, someone told me that the Nader folks were trying to create a sort of potluck dinner group in every state across the country — the idea being that you organize people socially and out of that can grow a network that will move progressive politics forward,” said Sam Seder, a radio host on Air America. “The brilliance of this group is that they’ve actually done that.”

You bought the republican talking point hook line and sinker because that authorization had a requirement that Bush come back to congress for authorization before he commited any troops and he didn't... All that anyone voted for amounted to allowing limited action in afghanistan.and NOT Iraq.
So my friends do me the favor since I'm browser impaired, of posting something about Obamas proposed policies?
I'd like to hear your justifications of them since I believe that he's actually to the right of even the first Clinton
I don't see anything "stealthy" about Obama's liberalness..
... sure he's right of most of us, but many of us are to the left of Jesus. It's not so much important as where he sits on the political spectrum, but that he has indicated a willingness to try and change the business as usual bullshit inside the Beltway. In my mind that's impossible to change but the fact that he even speaks to change it is indicative of where his head's at. I'll defer to his Harvard education on this one.
There have never been times like these. No one can hope to call the shots. It's like going back to the beginning of this election cycle. Remember how wrong all the "experts" were then? I think that's where we are headed. Whether it's next week or during the convention, this is all brand new.

Skynet 5 is intended to provide British forces with a secure, high-bandwidth

Aye MB. I understand your point. But I do not agree with it. I am too old not to understand the need to "play the game" to make it past the corporations and have a chance at holding the reins. But Obama is here to fore "unproven" in his "liberalness". To my discriminating political eye, he poses as a left centrist, with corporatist leanings. My discriminating gut is telling me there is more there.
Suffice it to say I trust my gut more than I do my eyes.
And yet Hillary will go down in the history books as ...

that Mrs. Clinton is in the employ of high powered, right wing mobsters. Her assignment? Destroy the Democratic Party and Barack Obama. I ask you today....how's she doing?
» ==========================================
And yet the spin will be that Hillary went to the Convention as the underdog. Leave it to the Clintons to finesse that out of an early start frontrunner who was clearly defeated.

Sorry Nobs but I don't think anything would have been fair in the case of Florida and Michigan. If you follow rules you're screwed and when you don't follow rules, you're screwed.
I don't like what this whole thing has done to the country as well as the Dems. Maybe after this election, it will be time to change the rules.

"unproven" in his "liberalness"
I can't assume that he would be so calculating to to turn down "the good life" as a top grad of Harvard Law school to go back to Chicago to organize at the street level. If money was his motivator he'd be working on Wall Street or Madison Ave now and not trying to move into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
You may be right cent, I'm a sucker for hope. American's have been getting fucked over for about 30 years now, I think Obama is aware of that. I don't like the alternative of not taking him at his word.

I dunno...
The primaries have been pretty well covered in Ecuador. I assume it's the same over the rest of the world. From what I have seen, Clinton has become increasingly desperate and relatively petty in my mind. Even translated in Spanish, this was clear in the reporting and quotes of hers and, especially, her campaign.
Honestly, since I've been back, Hillary has seemed to be not so much rendered the underdog as rendered irrelevant by a confluence of events: The math favoring Obama, McCain attacking him directly and Obama engaging that directly and her gaffes. The media, the country and even a lot of Clinton supporters seem to be kind of numb and wanting to move forward with certainty as to who the nominee is. Even if she does take it to the convention, I think Obama is going to move on and declare victory after Tues. He really has no choice unless he loses really badly in the remaining primaries. Even then, it will favor him to declare himself the winner much more than floating in purgatory for two more months. At this point Clinton is just going to continue losing ground and support.
>>an early start frontrunner
>>an early start frontrunner who was clearly defeated.
not to mention broke.
corporations give to Hillary (at least they did before she fell behind)...PEOPLE give to Obama
"I don't like the alternative of not taking him at his word."
Yes. Me too.
It, for me, has come down to the old "lesser of evils". In comparison, well, there is no comparison. Hillary is a flat out NeoCon. So, Obama is THE ONLY choice here. So, we close our eyes and roll the dice, and hope like hell he doesn't turn out to be a friggin nightmare.
"Turn down the good life"? Come on MB, check the record. Lets be honest, he is no angel. And, he is a millionaire. But, to a cynic, that is a plus. It means to me, he has already "got his". So, I can take a chance and trust his integrity.
All things considered, I will "hope" for the best, but, as I always do, I will prepare for, and, unfortunately, expect, the worst.
C'est la Vie.
Rachel was right all along. It's time to push her out.

he is no angel..
..and neither am I or you. The only angels I know of play baseball in California.
What I do believe he is not the spawn of Satan, that one is already in the White House so we have better than a 50/50 chance of getting someone who is not evil incarnate.
I don't think Obama the President will veer sharply right, not with the number of lower dollar contributors.
Strip yourself of the media spin, read the dude's own words, consider his history, study his family. The real powers that be want to buy him off for sure. Will he be bought? I say no.

As I heard this week on Democracy Now!'s interview with Utah Phillips, the aim of television is to alter your consciousness to get their desired result. I'm not saying all TV is bad, just most of it. Right wing radio is as bad but it lacks the visual cue to incite as much.
The media's the immediate problem.

Bill Clinton's Enemies List:
The Media, MoveOn.org
Politico | KENNETH P. VOGEL | May 30, 2008 at 09:22 PM
With Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign on the verge of defeat, Bill Clinton has been placing blame on enemies including a brazenly biased media that tried to suppress blue-collar votes, a powerful anti-war group that endorsed rival Barack Obama and weak-willed party leaders unable to stand up to either of these nefarious forces.
Pieced together from the former president’s public remarks at his wife’s campaign events and a private conversation last week with top donors to her campaign, the theory goes something like this: After Hillary recovered from a string of losses to rival Barack Obama with March 4 wins in Texas and Ohio, powerful forces conspired to pressure the superdelegates who will decide the nomination to back Obama by discouraging her supporters from voting and trying to hide evidence proving she would fare better than Obama against presumptive GOP nominee John McCain
While the former president has offered parts of this theory publicly, he fleshed it out more explicitly during a conference call last week with maxed-out donors to his wife’s campaign, a recording of which has been obtained by Politico.
Hear Bill Clinton's callAfter rattling off a series of poll numbers showing Hillary Clinton faring better than Obama against McCain, Bill Clinton told donors: “We are in the strongest conceivable position electorally and not in a good fix with the superdelegates, because they have felt all the pressure from the Obama side, from the media, from the MoveOn crowd — who they think is an automatic ATM machine for everybody for life. So, they’re reluctant to take on all that.”
While the campaign has been blasting the media for weeks for prematurely calling the race for Obama, President Clinton has added a new entry to his enemy list: MoveOn.org, the anti-war group that endorsed Obama and that, through its political action committee, has raised millions for Democratic candidates, money the Clintons apparently believe has unfairly purchased superdelegate support for Obama.
Campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson offered another interpretation, telling Politico that “the president was referring to efforts online to pressure superdelegates in support of Sen. Obama,” pointing to a petition the group circulated in February asking superdelegates to “let the voters decide between Clinton and Obama, then support the people's choice.”
That means supporting the candidate with the most pledged delegates, said MoveOn spokeswoman Ilyse Hogue, who wouldn’t comment on Clinton’s charge, except to say that “we respect the president very much.”
Hillary Clinton has privately complained about MoveOn before, at a small fundraiser held after the Super Tuesday primaries. “They flood into these caucuses and dominate them and really intimidate people who actually show up to support me,” she said, according to an audio recording obtained by Huffington Post. In the recording, she also refers to the MoveOn's fundraising prowess, telling donors that "MoveOn.org endorsed [Obama], which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down."
On his call with donors, President Clinton also directed his fire at the media, asserting that he’s “never seen anybody persist against greater odds and against a more hostile media environment and a more imbalanced one” than the one Hillary Clinton has faced.
This elaborated, or at least amplified, a theme Clinton has been asserting at least since her lopsided loss in North Carolina and surprisingly narrow win in Indiana on May “It’s over, bag it. And the rest of you poor folks, you just get in line and stay home” is how he characterized the media coverage while introducing his wife at an event in Lexington, Ky., on the eve of the May 20 primaries in Kentucky and Oregon.
