video on betrayus and webb's exchange
Spencer Ackerman, writing for the Washington Independent highlights two key portions of today's confirmation hearings for Generals David Petraeus and Ray Odierno, fueled by tenacious questioning from Democratic Senator Jim Webb, who continues to be a firm source of well-informed, yet softly stated pushback to the administration's foreign policy follies.
Webb went back and forth with Odierno, working to pin him down on what the "endpoint" of the military mission in Iraq was supposed to resemble and what conditions could precipitate the end of our occupation. Via Windy:

McCain Finally Rejects Hagee's Support -- And Makes It All About Obama And Wright
By Eric Kleefeld - May 22, 2008, 3:57PM
The controversy surrounding John Hagee's endorsement has finally gotten to John McCain. In the wake of new quotes being circulated by the Huffington Post in which Hagee called Hitler an instrument of God's will, McCain has now rejected Hagee's support.
"Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them," McCain told CNN in a statement. "I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well."
That matter aside, McCain was sure to bring this back to Barack Obama, insisting that his active effort to get Hagee's support originally was not nearly as bad as Obama's associations with Jeremiah Wright.
"I have said I do not believe Senator Obama shares Reverend Wright's extreme views. But let me also be clear, Reverend Hagee was not and is not my pastor or spiritual advisor, and I did not attend his church for twenty years. I have denounced statements he made immediately upon learning of them, as I do again today."

National Journal's Blogometer does a nice daily summation of the best of the blogs. I've excerpted some of the more interesting comments about Hillary in the liberal blogosphere over the past 24 hours. (The first quote, by Josh, wasn't in the Blogometer, so I added it.)
Josh Marshall:
"She is embarking on a gambit that is uncertain in its result and simply breathtaking in its cynicism.... What she's doing is not securing her the nomination. Rather, she's gunning up a lot of her supporters to believe that the nomination was stolen from her -- a belief many won't soon abandon. And that on the basis of rationales and arguments there's every reason to think she doesn't even believe in."
Carpetbagger Report:
"I've defended Clinton, more than once, when people said she was putting her own interests above those of the party and the nation. But after seeing her tactics yesterday, I'm done defending Hillary Clinton. I'm 35, and have been following politics for quite a while, and I've never been so disappointed with a politician I've admired and respected. Yesterday's tactics weren't just wrong, they were offensive.
BooMan:
"I think this delegitimization of Obama's victory is the act she will be most remembered for. And if Obama does not win the election in November, Clinton will join Ralph Nader in the left-wing Hall of Shame."
TNR:
"[T]his episode is very revealing about Clinton's character. [...] If she's consciously lying, it's a shockingly cynical move. I don't think she's lying. I think she's so convinced of her own morality and historical importance that she can whip herself into a moralistic fervor to support nearly any position that might benefit her, however crass and sleazy.... She is proving herself temperamentally unfit for the presidency."
Balloon Juice:
"What a contemptible wretch"
Matt Yglesias
"[H]er campaign has lost and is continuing to engage in bizarre and reckless behavior."
Markos:
"One of the wonders of this primary season has been the ability of the Clinton campaign -- including Hillary herself -- and their supporters to engage in some of the most patently ridiculous and bald faced lies, knowing that everyone else knows they are engaging in patently ridiculous and bald faced lies."
Lemieux:
"Clinton's campaign...is using these ridiculous Calvinball metrics to undermine the legitimacy of the Democratic nominee.... to send flacks to rile up other Democrats against Obama under these circumstances is a disgrace."
Atrios:
"It's weird, really, having in some sense started my political life defending the Clintons and now being rather fed up with them. I'm not important, but I'm not alone."
Huff Post:
"Every time she claims she has a popular majority, she's shattering whatever ceasefire exists and making it that much more likely that her supporters stay home come November. If she really wants a united party, she needs to stop, and the media and the superdelegates need to hold her accountable."
More Huff Post:
"Now that Clinton's hopes of winning the nomination are more distant than ever, this talk seems less about helping her campaign and more about hardening the attitudes of her supporters against Obama.... Already, Clinton can blame her campaign for tarnishing her family's legacy of connection to America's black voters. Will she also risk taking blame for sinking the general election by losing badly?"
Sorry, to see this actually--

Hillary Clinton Stole My Bike, Insulted My Mom, and Kicked My Dog
By: John Cole May 22, 2008 at 11:55 am
No one can drive me to the brink of madness like the Clinton family. No one.
I just looked through all my posts from yesterday, and it really is funny. I woke up early, had my coffee (gourmet with cinnamon, because I am an elitist), got in a good work-out, read the morning papers and websites, made two posts unrelated to Clinton, and started to examine some new software I want to use, and then I made my mistake.
I turned on CNN. Within a few hours, I heard numerous Clinton surrogates babbling about who had worked harder most recently and the unfairness of not seating MI/FL, and on and on and on. I saw an interview of Geraldine Ferraro in full outrage mode because Obama appears to look at Clinton funny in a photograph and because he brushed dirt off his shoulders at a campaign event. And then we learned that Hillary plans to take this fight to the convention.
And then, once again, the only family who can do this to me, had managed to push me yet again into unholy madness. It is mind-numbing. This isn’t an election anymore. This is a secret bet between Bill and Hillary ala Trading Places in which they bet how much bullshit they can make the electorate swallow.
Then the Florida 2000 poison- another bucket.
And then the suffrage nonsense- yet another bucket.
And the co-option of the Civil Rights era after weeks of transparent appeals that whites won’t vote for the black guy which JUST SO COINCIDENTALLY took form during the Appalachian primaries (which conveniently occurred after North Carolina, the last state with a large black population)- buckets of bullshit over your head, in your face.
And then Zimbabwe remarks, a bucket of bullshit so stupid that her audience probably didn’t even understand it (I would kill to see video of the people in the audience during that).
It just never stops.

Florida delegates file
Florida delegates file lawsuit to get delegation seated
Posted: 03:00 PM ET
From CNN Associate Producer Martina Stewart
Three of Florida’s Democratic delegates filed a federal lawsuit Thursday in an attempt to force the Democratic National Committee to seat Florida’s delegation at the convention.
Steven Geller, an uncommitted Florida superdelegate and a Florida state senator; Barbara Effman, a pledged delegate for Sen. Hillary Clinton; and Percy Johnson, a pledged delegate for Sen. Barack Obama, have alleged that the DNC violated their constitutional rights to equal treatment and a fair process by stripping Florida of all of its delegates to the nominating convention because the state held its presidential primary prior to a date specified by the national party.
“This litigation addresses the view of Howard Dean and the Democratic National Committee that 1.75 million Democrats can be ignored at will,” Geller said in a statement released Thursday.
The DNC said the lawsuit had little chance of success. "In two other cases so far, the courts have upheld the Democratic National Committee's right to establish and enforce its own rules regarding the selection of delegates to the Democratic Convention,” said DNC spokesman Dag Vega.
In late March, the federal appeals court in Florida upheld the dismissal of another lawsuit filed in an attempt to force the DNC to seat the Florida delegation.
The Rules and Bylaws Committee of the DNC is set to meet May 31 to hear appeals from Florida and Michigan Democrats to allow the seating of both states’ delegations at the summer convention in Denver.

CNN will show Obama speech soon
Cafferty:Does Obama have a problem with Jewish voters in Florida?
"The fate of the world for the next four years… it's all going to boil down to a few old Jews in Century Village"… that's the assessment of the 2008 election campaign by Rabbi Ruvi New, according to the New York Times.
While the line is the kind that will get a laugh, the point he's making is very serious: Barack Obama could have a problem with some Jewish voters, especially in Florida.
Obama was in Boca Raton today speaking in a synagogue about foreign policy and his approach to Israel. Florida is critical, and Jews make up almost 4% of voters there. Many of them are elderly, and that's the group that has concerns about Obama.
He has received a lot of support from younger Jews – winning 45% of the Jewish vote in the primaries – if you don't include Florida and Michigan. But the latest Florida poll suggests Obama would lose to John McCain, while Hillary Clinton would win.
Obama didn't campaign in Florida and voters didn't get a chance to know him.

right on the money
The bad news comes in two parts:
1. In case you've forgotten, Karl Rove's already been subpoenaed. A year ago. By the Senate Judiciary Committee. Never testified. Never held in contempt. So how scared do you think he is this time?
2. It was also about a year ago that the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten. Their testimony was demanded and refused over a series of sliding deadlines over July of last year. A year later, neither one has testified, or even shown up at a hearing in person to say why they refuse to testify.
What ever happened with those subpoenas? Well, the full House voted to hold both Miers and Bolten in contempt of Congress, and referred the charges to the U.S. Attorney for prosecution. The U.S. Attorney told the House to go jump in the lake. The House did the next best thing, voting to authorize the Judiciary Committee to file suit to enforce the subpoenas.
But hey, gosh darn it, wouldn't you know it? The case got assigned to former Whitewater Deputy Independent Counsel John D. Bates, the federal judge who dismissed the Plame lawsuit, dismissed the Cheney Energy Task Force lawsuit, upheld the validity of Bush's signature on an a bill not properly passed in the same form by both houses of Congress, and dismissed the DNC's lawsuit seeking to force the FEC to rule on John McCain's attempt to withdraw from his presidential campaign's public financing commitments.
So, yeah, I'm not really feeling it.
It's what you do before your summer recess, you know? You put the hot stuff out there so you can brag on it while you're at home in your district, or doing appearances on progressive talk radio shows.
I mean, you tell me if you think Karl's sweating it.

LIMBAUGH: You know, the feminazis forgot one thing. Well, one of the objectives of the feminazis over the last 20, 25 years has been to dominate the public education system so as to remove the competitive nature of boys. You know, there's a crisis of young man-boy education in the schools. And they did this on purpose, to eliminate male competition in the work force. This is part of feminazi grand plan.
They forgot affirmative action for black guys. And because of that, every bit of their plan has gone up in smoke now, because they -- if -- they had to come out in favor of affirmative action for black guys, and that's -- see, this is one of the things that really irritates the women. And there are women all over this country fit to be tied -- trust me on this. And it's -- one of the things is affirmative action is exactly -- it's, you know, liberals eventually are going to be devoured by their own policies. And it has happened here. Because Barack Obama is an affirmative action candidate [...]
So, it's just -- they just forgot that one thing: affirmative action for black guys. And if they had remembered to oppose that, then they wouldn't face the situation they face today.
edna!!! talk about mobile phones
Shops track customers via mobile phone
Signals given off by phones allow shopping centres to monitor how long people stay and which stores they visit
Customers in shopping centres are having their every move tracked by a new type of surveillance that listens in on the whisperings of their mobile phones.
The technology can tell when people enter a shopping centre, what stores they visit, how long they remain there, and what route they take as they walked around.
The device cannot access personal details about a person’s identity or contacts, but privacy campaigners expressed concern about potential intrusion should the data fall into the wrong hands.
The surveillance mechanism works by monitoring the signals produced by mobile handsets and then locating the phone by triangulation – measuring the phone’s distance from three receivers.

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/05/22/vincent-bugliosi-bush-should-be...
If Bush, in fact, intentionally misled this nation into war, what is the proper punishment for him? Since many Americans routinely want criminal defendants to be executed for murdering only one person, if we weren’t speaking of the president of the United States as the defendant here, to discuss anything less than the death penalty for someone responsible for over 100,000 deaths would on its face seem ludicrous.** But we are dealing with the president of the United States here.
On the other hand, the intensity of rage against Bush in America has been such (it never came remotely this close with Clinton because, at bottom, there was nothing of any real substance to have any serious rage against him for) that if I heard it once I heard it ten times that “someone should put a bullet in his head.” That, fortunately, is just loose talk, and even more fortunately not the way we do things in America. In any event, if an American jury were to find Bush guilty of first degree murder, it would be up to them to decide what the appropriate punishment should be, one of their options being the imposition of the death penalty.

He has mastered the art of pulling shit out of his ass.
Sometimes I read or hear that he is a powerful voice on behalf of Conservatism, capable of recruiting new members to his cause.
If this is true, then why are Conservatives breaking ranks and non-Conservatives growing in power? Why are Bush's approval ratings in the dumpster? Why are fewer and fewer people identifying themselves as Republicans?
Limbaugh is not a powerhouse. He is a clown with a radio show, and not a very good clown.
Obama's VP.....
I still haven't heard this mentioned, but I think he should pick someone from the House of Reps. This gives the ticket someone with experience in both houses of congress. This could bode well for getting much needed legislation passed to correct for all the harm done by the republican dismantling.
Plus there are 435 to choose from.... plenty of obscure unknowns there.....
My current long shot pick (someone i've never heard of until i went on the search):
Ed Markey from Massachusetts...
... i just hope he picks a person who can best serve the country, and not someone picked for electability...

I have a MasterCard, with a fairly high balance.(Slowly going down.) But I always pay the bill on time. I send it in the mail so there will be plenty of time to get there before the due date. (A few times, I sent it only three days before the due date. But like %99.9 letters, the payment arrived on time: 3 days for first class letters.) Anyway, it seems once a year, they will tell me that my payment came in late--I sent this one 6 or seven days early--charge me a $39 late fee, and warn me that next time I may get a bigger rate. What a scam. I know they are setting me up for something. I think next time my bank offers me to transfer balances, I will jump on lt.

I actually like the idea of Wesley Clark and not just for electability.
There should be enough of a majority in the House if he gets elected that he won't need veep help there. I think Pelosi will do a good job with a Dem president and the functional majority. I would like to see them throw over Hoyer as Whip so maybe Markey would be better there. I would prefer keeping as many in Congress in for now and not tamper with those numbers.
Dodd for Majority Leader. HRC can take on the mantle of Kennedy and Byrd if that should come to pass.
Edwards as AG.
Biden as SoS or SCOTUS.
Richardson to the UN.
Maybe Powell as SoD and a good spot for Robert Reich.

funny Clinton Bar B Q sauce story
for a time, earlier this decade, I lived in a town where the Clintons had once lived. In Arkansas.
apparently there was a Bar B Q place in this town that made their own sauce. Bill Clinton must have loved that sauce, cause he had it shipped to the White House on a regular basis.
well, sadly, he ordered so much of the stuff that the Bar B Q joint had to go out of business. they couldn't keep up with the demand.

Crazy story.

Paul Hodes (D) was just on complaining about the Pentagon feeding war talking points to retired generals who would get on national airwaves to feed the public war mongering talking points and propaganda.
Paul Broun (R) is trying to redefine the abuse of the Pentagon as no more significant than propaganda like "Be All That You Can Be".

Bush wants us to visualize Chamberlain. We get it, honey.
You don't need to add ten million more repetitive words.

well can we at least assume it's narrowed down to 796 people??? (super-delegates)
I highly doubt Obama will choose someone outside the democratic party... especially will the whole unity thing lingering.... so at least we have a finite number, albeit quite large.....
the 796...part 1... endorsed delegates
the 796...part 2... uncommitted delegates

Since when has reality played any part of Republican economics?
Americans are fooling themselves if they think U.S. inflation is under control, the manager of the world's largest bond fund said.
Bill Gross, chief investment officer of Pacific Investment Management Co (PIMCO) said in his June investment outlook that he has been arguing for some time that inflation statistics "were not reflecting reality at the checkout counter."

Thanks. I read it earlier. I love that stuff and periodically I need to be reminded that I am not the only anal retentive afflicted, Jesuit priests and Sisters of Charity instructed and English obsessed spelling checker on the planet.

The Red Sox beat the Royals today 11 to 8. If you take away the two (yes, count 'em, 2) grand slams, the Royals would have won 8 to 3.
K.C. was thiiiiiis close to bagging a win.

Inherent powers? Flatulence comes to mind.
Was that a vertebrae I saw?
I believe it was. Between Waxman's smackdown on Issa and the outrage on propaganda seen on C-SPAN earlier, I think their may be an outbreak of spinal fever in the House. Would not be surprised now to see Conyers light one under Rove's ass as Turley just bet on.
Beats the crap out of the primary diarrhea we endured lately.

Lucille,
did you keep up with the Vietnam war when it happened?
Were you up on current events during Watergate? I was like 12 and 13 and all over it. I kept up with every detail and for the first time couldn't wait to see if there was an article in the newspapers.
It took for ever to do those things. I never expected instant gratification. The Bush Crime Family took 8 years to put us where we are. They used Reistag fire false flag stories and retired general cronies to propagandized as far as I can tell. They fooled a lot of people. Do you think you can get 300 million people to the facts faster?
Really? Some of us figure it out faster than others. This ain't politics anymore. This is a culture war. It's the American way as FDR saw it and Fascism as Hitler saw it.
and you know not for nothing i am worried about Nobody
that rusty sword??
