White House On Jerusalem
White House On Jerusalem Post’s Iran Story: ‘It’s Not Worth The Paper It’s Printed On’
Reacting to this morning’s story in the Jerusalem Post claiming that Bush will attack Iran before the end of his term, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino told reporters that the article “is not worth the paper it’s printed on.”
Reporting shortly after the morning White House gaggle, CNN’s White House correspondent Ed Henry said:
A reporter pointed out to Dana Perino though that we heard these similar denials from the White House in the run-up to the war in Iraq. They insisted that diplomacy was the first option; military option was the last option. And wondering whether this is a replay, Dana Perino says it is not.
Watch it:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/05/20/iran-not-worth-paper/
In taking on NBC News yesterday and the Jerusalem Post today, Henry said, “There’s a broader fight going on — which is the White House against the media.”

I dont think Congress will go for an attack on Iran, there is no evidence of a program.
None whatsoever. Conyers said impeachment if he goes ahead. But I would not put anything past Cheney.
However , you wanna talk about high gas prices. Jeeeeeze
Not to mention there Will be massive American casualties , the Public worldwide would not stand for it.
That being said, the Dems have approved covert operations inside Iran.
And recently AL Maliki said there is NO proof that Iran is supplying weapons. And he is right.
After all, Iran has a right to enrich Uranium for peaceful processes. And the IAEA is validating this.

I believe it was War Dog to which Sam was refering. War Dog has been with us almost from the start of Sam's MRR blog. Always the ditto headed contrarian. Sam seemed to protect his being on the blog even though we would try hard to get Sam to ban him. He even posted photos of himself on the MRR picture blog but I am even doubting that now.
read my post above for more info:
http://www.samsedershow.com/node/3109#comment-204682
And I am sure that the oldtimers on the blog will add their opinion.
---------------
toniD,
My best guess is that whomever morphed into Intellect got Sam's goat...so to speak.
Regarding War Dog, I was born and reared in Kansas City and can verify that War Dog mentioned and let slip enough information about the K.C. metropolitan area to make me believe that he lives in that area...though it isn't inconceivable that a persistently obnoxious asshole would go to the trouble to create entirely fictional background information that appears to be legitimate.
Also, he never neglected to blog while on the road in the past (or so he claimed), and he recently claimed to have been vacationing in Arizona but not blogging...which seems a little odd as well as coincidental with POT[Dog]'s presence on the blog.
I don't know nuthin' 'bout nuthin' and I don't know if War Dog is a piece of the Intellect, etc. collection of obnoxious assholes. I only know that being an obnoxious asshole on a blog is a weird hobby.
New York City's War on Pot Smokers
NYC's Staggering Arrest Rate for Pot Achieved By Police Deception and Scams
New York City has been the pot-bust capital of the world for a decade, since Rudolph Giuliani’s decision to make public toking a top police priority. A new study sponsored by the New York Civil Liberties Union says the city’s cannabis crackdown is both racist and fraudulent.
New York police have arrested almost 400,000 people for misdemeanor marijuana possession in the last decade. Last year, there were 39,700 such arrests. The vast majority of those seized have been black and Latino men, most under 25. And according to the NYCLU study, released last week, thousands of them are the victims of police scams, falsely charged with possession of marijuana “burning or open to public view.”
“We are confident in estimating that about two-thirds to three-quarters of the people arrested were not smoking marijuana,” the study says. “Usually they were doing their utmost to keep their marijuana concealed, generally deep inside their clothing.” The authors, sociologist Harry Levine of Queens College and activist Deborah Peterson-Small of the organization Break The Chains, say that conclusion is “based on the experience of legal aid and public-defender attorneys who have handled thousands of these cases, along with that of the police officers and arrestees we interviewed.”

that 3-6 slot
i really think its not fair to put sammer up against a powerhouse like randi. the real solution is to put aar's current power house up against her, yep, thats right, a lionel vs randi smackdown. then we put sammer back in the 9-12 slot.

SickPlanet
The Book
Agriculture and medicine are meant to fill two basic human needs, but in today’s US economy, those industries’ number-one purpose has become profitable growth for their owners. It is ecosystems, and people living and working in the most degraded ecosytems, who pay the price. If capitalist economics can’t even supply people with food or protect human health without enormous waste and destruction, it can’t be relied upon to resuscitate a sick planet.
http://www.sickplanetbook.com/

US denies report on plan to attack Iran
The White House on Tuesday flatly denied an Army Radio report that claimed US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran before the end of his term. It said that while the military option had not been taken off the table, the Administration preferred to resolve concerns about Iran's push for a nuclear weapon "through peaceful diplomatic means."
Slideshow: Pictures of the week Army Radio had quoted a top official in Jerusalem claiming that a senior member in the entourage of President Bush, who concluded a trip to Israel last week, had said in a closed meeting here that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were of the opinion that military action against Iran was called for.

Love you. but, to be honest I would prefer Sam. Maron makes me nervous with his talk about his problems. We all have problems. Maybe it's my age. But then again, that's a point too.
I like both and when Maron gets off himself, he's great, but I think Sam is more grounded and stable.

...And at this point, I don't care. As long as he doesn't come back.
-----
toniD,
I don't care either. But I would not be opposed to his/her/its return if he/she/it returned as a respectful member of society instead of as an obnoxious antagonist.
A goal of purposefully and persistently pissing people off doesn't fit in with my idea of contributing to the blog. It isn't far removed from yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater.
I never liked the way AAR seemed to be auditioning Marc and Sam.
I never liked the idea that AAR played them off each other. I do think it would have been appropriate to try them both out together. They both deserve a spot and each bring their own unique brand of radio. I actually think it would be best if they had their own individual shows, but I would accept a duet. I still think Sam should have first rights, just because he is both good and how loyal he has been to the network.
ToniD
I will be happy if Sam gets the 3-6 slot! And, I will listen.
But, I don't like Sam trying to make Maron feel bad if he gets it. Maron should not be made to feel bad because he tried out for the same job as Sam.
is this what marc was talking about?
The White House on Tuesday flatly denied an Army Radio report that claimed US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran before the end of his term. It said that while the military option had not been taken off the table, the Administration preferred to resolve concerns about Iran's push for a nuclear weapon "through peaceful diplomatic means."
Army Radio had quoted a top official in Jerusalem claiming that a senior member in the entourage of President Bush, who concluded a trip to Israel last week, had said in a closed meeting here that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were of the opinion that military action against Iran was called for.
The official reportedly went on to say that "the hesitancy of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice" was preventing the administration from deciding to launch such an attack on the Islamic Republic for the time being.
The Army Radio report, which was quoted by The Jerusalem Post and resonated widely, stated that according to assessments in Israel, the recent turmoil in Lebanon, where Hizbullah has de facto established control of the country, was advancing an American attack.

A Complete Waste of Money, IMO
Not so fast, Clinton supporters say
The drumbeat grows louder for Hillary Clinton to gracefully exit the stage and cede the spotlight to Barack Obama.
If he gets the expected win in today's primary in Oregon, Obama will declare loudly that he has the majority of all delegates to be chosen by voters in primaries and caucuses. He is 17 shy of that milestone on the path to the Democratic nomination.
For his speech tonight in Iowa, he will have a new high-profile ally -- Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Scott Brennan will endorse Obama today, the Associated Press is reporting. And a growing number of leading Democrats say it's time to let Obama focus on Republican John McCain.
Clinton and her loyalists are having none of that. She is expected to win in Kentucky, meaning she would have won four of the last six primaries.
A group of supporters, gathered as WomenCount PAC, placed a full-page ad in today's New York Times.
"Not so fast....Hillary's voice is OUR voice, and she's speaking for all of us," the headline says.
They say in the ad that they "stand united in our unwavering support for Hillary Clinton." "We know that when women vote, Democrats win. Now it is the responsibility of our party to hear our voices and count all of our votes. We want Hillary to stay in this race until every vote is cast, every vote is counted, and we know that our voices are heard."

Maron on AAR again?
Much as I would love it, I can't see Marc or AAR doing the dance again unless they agree to make him whole from the bankruptcy. Too much water under the bridge. Much as I love him and would prefer to see him get the slot, I don't see AAR taking on another 'problem' host to replace the previous one.
It's part of the biz
and makes for great ratings.
They are both very professional, in their own rights.
And,
this isn't their first contract.
Go get um!
Great show, Sam & Marc!
Dan:
Don't know about having troops at "their disposal" this summer. But I don't put anything...ANY-fucking-thing...past the neocons.
I believe that Dim Son/Chainmail would attack IraN by air & sea and not use ground forces beyond what they have in IraQ to protect the border.
That said, Bush & Cheney have been put on notice, both publically & privately, that an attack on IraN w/o congressional approval would result in the immediate filing of articles of impeachment on both of them.
If the dems hadn't won congressional majorities in '06, I would tend to think that the neocons WOULD have attacked IraN. But given that the dems DO have the majority, it's prolly weighing heavily on their actions.

I received the below deranged, hyperventilating email recently; the version I got claimed it was written by a "Canadian housewife," and a quick google search reveals that, as usual with crazy right-wing email insanity, the attribution is inaccurate (it was really written by Doug Patton, an American columnist, nearly three years ago), but it's often attributed to a "New Jersey housewife" or an Atlanta woman, and, sadly for us all, it's still circulating. (Not sure why the attribution gets switched to women so often, and again, while I'm reprinting the original column, in the one I got all the "US" or "America" mentions were changed to "Canada." Very weird.) Anyway, it's a nice glimpse into the mindset of the people who progressives are trying to prevent from ruining the world (continued below the fold):
Enviro Populism Threatens the GOP In the West
During the conservative uprising of the 1980s, Republicans exploited environmental issues and Land Politics to create a wedge between those who want the planet protected and those who are employed in the natural resource industry. Call it the spotted owl-versus-jobs wedge. Conrad Burns, for instance, was originally elected to the U.S. Senate from Montana on a right-wing populist campaign that railed on environmentalists who supposedly wanted to eliminate logging and mining jobs. But now the pendulum has swung in the other direction, with Democrats using their pro-environment positions to wedge apart a national Republican Party that has put itself in direct conflict with its local grassroots base.
Throughout the West, Democrats are starting to compete and win in oil and gas producing regions. In Western Colorado, for instance, natural gas production is booming - as are Democrats prospects. ...
While the energy sector is certainly important, it is dwarfed by other sectors - many of which can be energy exploration-averse. Additionally, most Democrats out here are not "anti-energy" - they are for responsible energy development that gets the region out of what has been a destructive boom-bust cycle.
In the past, the energy industry has raced to extract as many natural resources as possible as fast as possible, hoping to cash in on a given price spike. But now, with most predicting energy prices will remain profitable, we should have the luxury of more sustained - rather than super-accelerated - development - the kind that can take into account environmental impacts.

S. Res. 356 from True Majority
There is a resolution already in the Senate called S. Res. 356. It's a straightforward and simple resolution that says, "A resolution affirming that any offensive military action taken against Iran must be explicitly approved by Congress before such action may be initiated."
Tell your Senator to support and fight for S. Res 356:

Today's story is just the latest to discuss the increasingly belligerent rhetoric of the Bush administration towards Iran. Just last week, President Bush compared anyone who seeks to negotiate with Iran to those who appeased the Nazis prior to World War II.
We only have a few months until our long national nightmare of the Bush Administration comes to an end. But, it is abundantly clear that they intend on going out with a bang. It's time for the Congress to embrace its role as a co-equal branch of government and stop them before it is too late.

'The War on Democracy'
'The War on Democracy' is John Pilger's first major film for the cinema - in a career that has produced more than 55 television documentaries. Set in Latin America and the US, it explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile.
"The film tells a universal story," says Pilger, "analysing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called war on terror".

catching up
missed the show (8am is too early PST)
but if they were to pit these guys one against the other for a show i'd go with sam any day, i remember from morn sedition marc seemed soooo neurotic and more opinionated than informative whereas sam is pretty solid level even keeled and very informative with excellent interviews.
Although when marc was on novam recently i was very impressed with his very measured reasoned tone
I do not think Sam was trying to make Marc feel bad.
Sam knew all along that they were auditioning. Marc did not seem to know it. The survival skills thing, was just them talking about a future where global warming had wiped most of the world out. Marc jokingly said he would start having fun. Sam said he was worried for the kids and what would remain for them. That is when he made the survival skills remark. It had nothing to do with the radio show.
Sam did chastise him a little for not making the duel show happen. There was a little friction over that, but they moved on.
I can't see why
Sam or Marc couldn't negotiate a multi-funded show where there is a user supported component, an ad space on the blog, and a station supported component.
I'd like to see a diversity of funding options for the best possible show. It would also be a great way to insure the independence of our pundit.

Supply fears push oil beyond $129
Oil prices have surged past $129 a barrel as Opec comments that it would not be boosting output in the coming months increased concerns about supply.
Speculation that China would need to import more fuel in the aftermath of its earthquake also continued to drive prices, analysts said.
US light crude hit $129.31 a barrel before falling back to $128.70. London Brent crude added $1.77 to $126.83.
Oil investor T Boone Pickens forecast that prices would reach $150 this year.
Last week, prices were supported by Goldman Sachs forecasting that oil would reach $141 a barrel later this year.
Observers said that other factors spurring on the market included limited supplies of refined products such as diesel ahead of the US driving season.
'Upward impetus'
The weak US dollar has also been strongly linked with surging oil prices, as investors look to buy into commodities instead of the greenback.
The Opec producers' cartel has said that it will not meet until its scheduled gathering in September to discuss increasing oil output - despite US calls for it to act to cool prices.
This was "further weighing on supply concerns and adding to upward price impetus" said Bank of Ireland analyst Paul Harris.

Doctors: Kennedy Has A Brain Tumor
Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat say tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. His treatment will be decided after more tests but the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy.
The 76-year-old senator has been hospitalized in Boston since Saturday, when he was airlifted from Cape Cod after a seizure at his home.
His wife and children have been with him each day but have made no public statements.
His doctors said in a statement released to The Associated Press that he has had no further seizures, is in good spirits and is resting comfortably.

Thing is, when has the "law" ever stopped them? And when has the CONgress ever denied them anything? ("We didn't know they'd actually DO it; we just thought it was a good idea to tell them 'Yeah, we're scared [you have shit on us] and this is a way to hide/pretend we didn't understand/blahdeblah.'")
And what's to stop another "signing statement"? They don't obey subpeonas, they don't obey anything. They hate Americans, if not America, and the Constitution. They are pathological liars and a death cult. Why should we believe that they don't plan/won't execute an attack on Iran?
Why have they gone to such extremes to provide for the institution of martial law at any whim? (It worked so well in Katrina. For them.) Why have they broken our military, only to substitute with Blackwater brownshirts?
As much as Randi gets on my last nerve for talking over people, she got it right when she said "When they show you who they are, believe them." That is some truth!
Prescott Bush supported the Nazis. Like father like son like grandson. They will not leave without a fight, even if it means they all have to relocate to Paraguay to avoid the radiation from the bombs THEY will perpetrate on us, while the evil complicit media says "Oh no! If you have the resources, get the hell out of Dodge or have a few years' worth of food and water and everything else in an underground bunker. We have indeed met the enemy and it is our government--which is in place to enrich those in power on the backs of the workers.

Military officer says Iran jeopardizing peace in Iraq, senators want diplomatic talks
ANNE FLAHERTY
AP News
May 20, 2008 11:09 EST
The top uniformed U.S. military officer told Congress Tuesday that Iran is directly jeopardizing peace in Iraq, prompting fresh calls from senators that the U.S. pursue diplomatic talks with Tehran.
Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that "irresponsible actions" by Iran's Revolutionary Guard "directly jeopardize" peace in Iraq.
"Restraint in our response does not signal lack of resolve or capability to defend ourselves against threats," Mullen told the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.
Sen. Arlen Specter, a member of the panel, said he is most concerned about the Bush administration's refusal to fully engage Iran in diplomatic discussions. U.S. diplomats have met with Iranian officials as part of a broader regional conference on Iraq, but insisted that discussions be limited to Iraq.
The U.S. accuses Iran of trying to develop a nuclear weapon, supporting terrorist groups and encouraging violence in Iraq by providing weapons and other material aid to Shiite militants there.
Specter, R-Pa., said past talks with the Soviet Union, Libya and North Korea proved helpful and that similar progress could be made with Iran.
If the government refuses to engage Iran, "we're missing a great opportunity to avoid a future conflict," Specter said.
Democratic Sens. Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Dianne Feinstein of California said they agreed and urged Defense Secretary Robert Gates to challenge President Bush's policy on Iran.

Obama's Unique Appeasement Style
From an Israeli vantage point then, it was shocking to see that immediately after Bush stepped down from the rostrum, Obama and his Democratic supporters began pillorying him for his remarks. Most distressing is what Obama's reaction said about the Democratic presidential hopeful.
OBAMA'S RESPONSE to Bush's speech was an effective acknowledgement that appeasing Iran and other terror sponsors is a defining feature of his campaign and of his political persona. As far as he is concerned, an attack against appeasement is an attack against Obama.

Visakha Puja, is a big day for Buddhists (not that I’m an expert). To put it in Christian perspective (which, being a heathen and all, I am also no expert in), it’s a bit like Christmas, Good Friday, and Jesus’ realization at age 12 all rolled into one. Today (the day of the full moon in May) is the day that the Buddha was born, and also the day 35 years after that when he had his “self-awakening,” and also the day that, 45 years after that, he passed away into total Nibbāna (aka, Nirvana), from eating bad pork, I think.
So, whatever you do today, whether you offer flowers, candles, and incense in material homage (amisa-puja), or offer homage through “the practice” (meditation to develop the mind so that it may stand in its own inner goodness, independent of outside ickiness) — patipatti-puja (which is just downright fun to say, and something I would love to be able to master) — or just go out to the park with the puppies after work and try to become one with the trees for an hour before drinking yourself to sleep, Happy Buddha Day!
Oh, and lay off the pork."
Saudis- Good Iranians-Bad
It is in the spirit of that meeting that the United States and Saudi Arabia have completed four critical agreements to strengthen the protection of energy resources, enhance peaceful nuclear cooperation, broaden the fight against global terrorism, and bolster nonproliferation. These agreements further cement the longstanding U.S.-Saudi friendship and close cooperation to help bring peace and stability to the region and its people.
The U.S. and Saudi Arabia will sign a Memorandum of Understanding in the area of peaceful civil nuclear energy cooperation. This agreement will pave the way for Saudi Arabia's access to safe, reliable fuel sources for energy reactors and demonstrate Saudi leadership as a positive non-proliferation model for the region.
The United States will assist the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to develop civilian nuclear power for use in medicine, industry, and power generation.
The Government of the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will establish a comprehensive framework for cooperation in the development of environmentally sustainable, safe, and secure civilian nuclear energy through a series of complementary agreements.

Landrieu implies Obama will get superdelegate vote
Louisiana U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu said she remains an unpledged superdelegate, but hinted that she would ultimately support fellow U.S. Sen. Barack Obama as the Democrats' nominee for president.
Superdelegates are basically free agents who can vote for any candidate they choose, regardless of the results of state primary or caucus elections.
"I'm unpledged, but my support will likely reflect the will of the state," Landrieu said while in Monroe on Sunday. Obama beat Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Louisiana primary.
Obama is expected to wrap up a majority of pledged delegates today during primary elections against U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton in Oregon and Kentucky.
He is also thought to lead Clinton in superdelegates, but Clinton has vowed to fight on throughout the primary season.
"Her chances are slim, but she hasn't conceded," Landrieu said.
Landrieu said she doesn't believe Clinton's desire to remain in a race where Obama appears to have an insurmountable lead will harm the Democrats' chances in the general election against presumptive Republican nominee U.S. Sen. John McCain.
"We will all unite behind the nominee," Landrieu said.

Why Bush can lie about who the appeasers were in the 30s:
Why the Christian Right Distorts History and Why it Matters
But the Christian nationalist narrative has a fatal flaw: it is based on revisionist history that does not stand up under scrutiny. The bad news is that to true believers, it does not have to stand up to the facts of history to be a powerful and animating part of the once and future Christian nation. Indeed, through a growing cottage industry of Christian revisionist books and lectures now dominating the curricula of home schools and many private Christian academies, Christian nationalism becomes a central feature of the political identity of children growing up in the movement. The contest for control of the narrative of American history is well underway.
History is powerful. That's why it is important for the rest of society not only to recognize the role of creeping Christian historical revisionism, but our need to craft a compelling and shared story of American history, particularly as it relates to the role of religion and society. We need it in order to know not how the religious Right is wrong, but to know where we ourselves stand in the light of history, in relation to each other, and how we can better envision a future together free of religious prejudice, and ultimately, religious warfare.

Italian PM Can Testify In CIA Kidnap Case
(AP) An Italian judge ruled Wednesday that Premier Silvio Berlusconi will be called to testify in the trial of 26 Americans and several Italians charged with kidnapping a terror suspect during a CIA operation.
Judge Oscar Magi approved the defense request as the case resumed. Magi also ruled that former Premier Romano Prodi will be called to testify.
Berlusconi, who has just been re-elected to another term, is considered a key witness because he was premier when Egyptian cleric Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr disappeared in February 2003.
Nasr's wife wept Wednesday as she described her husband's alleged torture in an Egyptian jail as part of the CIA's extraordinary rendition program.
Heavily veiled and speaking through a translator, Ghali Nabila testified in the trial of 26 Americans charged in Italy with kidnapping in February 2003.
"They put him on a cross, they beat him on the ears and all over his body," she told the court, citing a letter from her husband and conversations with him.

Court Rules That Paper Money Discriminates Against the Blind

A federal appeals court today upheld a lower ruling that the U.S. currency system discriminates against blind people because bills of different denominations are the same size, shape and color and cannot be easily distinguished by the visually impaired.
In a 2-1 ruling issued this morning, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said the existing system violates the federal Rehabilitation Act and ruled that the Treasury Department must find a way to accommodate the needs of the visually impaired.

McCain: I Can Demagogue
McCain: I Can Demagogue About Iran Because Public Is Ignorant
By Greg Sargent - May 20, 2008, 2:15PM
Okay, that's not quite what he said, but pretty darn close.
Time magazine's Joe Klein points us to a YouTube of him grilling John McCain yesterday about his attacks on Barack Obama over Iran.
McCain has been blasting Obama for his willingness to meet with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. But in questioning McCain yesterday, Klein pointed out: "According to most diplomatic experts, the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, is the guy who's in charge of Iranian foreign policy, and also in charge of the nuclear program."
"Why do you always keep on talking about Ahmadinejad, since he doesn't have power in that realm?" Klein asked.
Check out McCain's response...
The key line comes at the very end, when McCain says: "I think if you asked any average American who the leader of Iran is, I think they'd know."
Translation: I know I can count on Americans thinking that Ahmadinejad is the leader of Iran, so the reality doesn't matter a whit.
Seriously, it's either that or McCain genuinely believes what he said here. Neither is all that confidence-inspiring in a would-be commander-in-chief.

Poll: Key Hillary
Poll: Key Hillary Constituencies Moving Towards Obama
By Greg Sargent - May 20, 2008, 1:01PM
The latest national numbers from Gallup show some startling movement towards Obama among Dems who have been among Hillary's most reliable supporters.
It finds that Obama is now tied with Hillary among whites (47%-47%); leads her among women (49%-46%); edges her among Dems with a high school graduate or less (46%-47%); and leads her among Hispanics (51%-44%).
Those groups, obviously, have been the bedrock of Hillary's candidacy. The only major demographic group that Hillary gets 51% or more of are women aged 50 and older.
These numbers suggest that Obama's support is broadening daily, and that the party's rank and file -- in addition to its institutional players -- appear to be coalescing behind him.

On Fox News, Rove and Ingraham Criticize MSNBC For Blurring The ‘Line Between News And Commentary’
Last night, Karl Rove appeared on Fox News’s “The O’Reilly Factor” to discuss President Bush’s interview with NBC and accusations that the network distorted Bush’s comments. Rove and guest host Laura Ingraham quickly attacked NBC’s ethics:
INGRAHAM: Yes, well, Karl, this follows on, you know, on primary nights, big nights, when you’re with Brit and everybody here. Over at NBC, they have a couple of their, you know, commentator types Matthews and the like, sitting next to Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams. I mean, there is no line between news and commentary. It’s all blurred.
Rove added that the “journalistic standards of MSNBC, which are really no standards at all,” are now “creep[ing] into NBC.” Watch it:

Breaking News: Iran
Breaking News: Iran President Not All Powerful
by Steven D
Tue May 20th, 2008 at 10:09:30 AM EST
I know this must come as a shock to the non-appeasement crowd out there, but President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is simply not as powerful as our far more powerful Dear Leader likes to pretend. Evidence you ask? How about this story from the New York Times?
In his almost three years as president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been harshly criticized in the West. But he is increasingly drawing fire from Shiite clerics here, who accuse him of using religion to distract attention from his government’s failure to deliver on promises of prosperity and political freedoms. [...]
The tensions surround Imam Mahdi, the 12th imam in a direct bloodline from the Prophet Muhammad, who the Shiite faithful believe will one day emerge from 1,000 years in hiding to save mankind and bring justice to the world. Tens of thousands of pilgrims go each year to the Jamkaran mosque near Qum, about 75 miles south of Tehran, where they believe that the imam will appear.
President Ahmadinejad, who came to office in 2005 declaring his intention to “hasten the emergence” of Imam Mahdi, said in a speech broadcast nationally this month that Imam Mahdi supported the day-to-day workings of his government and was helping him in the face of international pressure.
That was too much for senior clerics, who contend that they alone are qualified to speak on the topic.

John McCain's Rapid-Fire Responders
Aides Turn the Media Rebuttal Into a Savvy Campaign Tactic
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 20, 2008; C01
When Newsweek ran a story last week on how John McCain and his allies may attack Barack Obama in the fall, the Arizona senator's top adviser fired off a letter calling the article "offensive" and "scurrilous" -- and threatened to kick the magazine's reporter off the campaign plane.
After The Washington Post reported on McCain's support for a land swap that wound up benefiting one of his top fundraisers, McCain called The Post Co.'s chief executive, Donald Graham, last week to complain.
And when USA Today reported Friday that McCain had won $14 million for the Air Force to buy land from the same Arizona developer, a campaign spokesman denounced the story as "absurd," "shameful" and a "smear job."
While McCain enjoys an image as a media darling, based largely on his bantering relationship with reporters on his bus, he and his presidential campaign aides have been hitting back hard against high-profile news reports they regard as inaccurate or unfair. The result is a more contentious relationship between the presumed Republican nominee and major news organizations than is publicly apparent.
"If stories are wrong, we have an absolute obligation to say so, and to say so as loudly as we can," said Mark Salter, McCain's longtime confidant, who writes the rebuttal letters. "It's not working the refs. It's just correcting things when the refs blow a call."
The McCain camp also circulates these letters to conservative radio hosts and bloggers, hoping to provide an alternative narrative for the press. "There is no point in calling the reporter," said McCain strategist Steve Schmidt. "There is no point in calling the [story] editor." When confronted with untrue accusations, he said, "we will use that to communicate with our supporters and donors to take advantage of the unfairness."

WASHINGTON -- An alleged 20th hijacker in the Sept. 11 conspiracy attempted suicide rather than face a Guantanamo Bay military commission and now suffers from such mental impairment that he can't adequately help in his own defense, his civilian lawyer says.
The contention suggests one possible reason the Defense Department last week dismissed charges against Mohammed al-Qahtani, who faced a potential death penalty if convicted in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. At the time, the administrator of the military commissions, Susan Crawford, gave no explanation. Mr. Qahtani remains under indefinite detention, and prosecutors may seek to file amended charges.

The View co-host brings up Prescott Bush's Nazi ties
David Edwards and Muriel Kane
When host Whoopi Goldberg raised the issue of George W. Bush's comparing anyone who wants to talk to Iran or Syria with the appeasers of Nazi Germany on Monday's edition of ABC's The View, the panel erupted into furious debate.
Conservative Elizabeth Hasselbeck repeatedly attempted to question whether Bush's remarks were really aimed at Barack Obama. She insisted, "It's not always about him," and suggested Obama is being defensive because he knows his support for talks with Iran is a weak spot.
"I think the president was very clear in what he meant," Goldberg replied tartly.
"The Bush administration is out there talking to North Korea, talking to Syria," noted liberal Joy Behar. "Isn't that what diplomacy is about? This guy doesn't know the difference between the word 'diplomacy' and 'appeasement.' He's just stupid."
"One more point," continued Behar, pulling out a prepared statement. "It's very interesting and ironic that George Bush, Senior's -- er, George Bush, this one -- his grandfather -- this one -- the late -- I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but in this case it's fun -- he was a United States senator, Prescott Bush. Okay -- he was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany."
"This is his grandfather," Behar continued. "He has no business talking to Jewish people when he's got this right in his backyard."
"How come you can bring up this backyard but then it's not alright to dig into Obama's backyard and family history?" was all the flustered Hasselbeck could find to say.
RAW STORY's Larisa Alexandrovna also cited the Prescott Bush connection last week. In her blog, at-Largely, she wrote:

NBC also omitted the rest of Bush's response: "And if you don't take them seriously, then it harkens back to a day when we didn't take other words seriously. It was fitting that I talked about not taking the words of Adolph Hitler seriously on the floor of the Knesset. But I also talked about the need to defend Israel, the need to not negotiate with the likes of al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas. And the need to make sure Iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon."
If Bush had actually explained what he thought Engel got wrong, then the editing might have come in for legitimate criticism. But all Bush did was vaguely and confusingly suggest that what he was calling appeasement was "not taking the words [of enemies like Iran -- or Hitler --] seriously." By no accepted definition does that amount to appeasement. But regardless, Bush's point was dutifully noted in what NBC aired.
The White House's outsized reaction instead appears to be about two other things entirely.

Remember:
The suicides of three detainees at the US base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, amount to acts of war, the US military says.
The camp commander said the two Saudis and a Yemeni were "committed" and had killed themselves in "an act of asymmetric warfare waged against us".
"They are smart. They are creative. They are committed. They have no regard for human life, neither ours nor their own," Harris said. "I believe this was not an act of desperation, but rather an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us." (Watch a retired general call the suicides 'an act of defiance' -- 3:29)
Asymmetrical warfare is when one side uses unorthodox or surprise tactics to attack the weak points of its stronger opponent.

Endgame: Bush/Cheney's desperate measures
There's no doubt that the GOP is in big trouble, facing catastrophic losses in the House and Senate this November. But if you believe that Bush and Cheney will observe the law and honor the traditions of American democracy, and therefore let themselves be forced from power, you're living in a world of happy dreams.
The fact is that this criminal regime cannot afford to drop their guns and walk out here amongst the rest of us; and there's much evidence that they do not intend to let that happen--ever. So we had better face that evidence (i.e., unearth it, since the media has largely played it down, or tuned it out), and brace ourselves for a protracted fight; because those men are capable of anything that will maintain their death-grip on the US government.
In this new vlog, I talk about that evidence (or some of it), and what we may expect before Election Day.

Rabbi Sammy now!
Sam Seder should get the slot. Indeed I like Maron too. But Seder is more than a radio host. Not only did he use his show to raise money for progressive candidates, he used his show for some real, strong advocacy. Mike Malloy, for example, as much as I like him- is no advocate. When callers complain about mainstream media, he insist nothing can be done. Just send the money to Nova M. Of course we should support alternative media. However, we are also paying for cable subscriptions, Internet subscriptions and buying the products advertised. Therefore, we certainly should have a say in the way mainstream media is conducted. If it were Sam, he would be asking his audience to pound them with emails or something.
As I posted yesterday, Sam is also responsible for igniting the alternative media or the blogesphere. Did Markos give thanks to Sam in one of his Newsweek pieces? Did Arianna invite Sam to one of her cocktail parties? How about you Firedoglake? Atrios? Where you at? The other day Randi slammed the blogesphere? Just get your news from her, she hinted. Sam would never be that narcissistic. And that's why I love Sam! In the pit of his heart, he's just a great guy. And Frankly! I want the nice guy to finish first.

3 more days before Senate recess--already?
Kennedy’s Absence Stalls Numerous Bills
By Kathleen Hunter, CQ Staff
The prospects for action on several pieces of legislation dimmed Monday as it became apparent that Edward M. Kennedy ’s hospitalization will prevent him from returning before the Memorial Day recess.
Kennedy’s unexpected absence from the Senate has extinguished hopes of passing a bill that would extend collective-bargaining rights to public safety employees (HR 980) and of resolving differences between the House and Senate versions of a major higher education overhaul (HR 4137, S 1642) before the weeklong break that begins May 23.
As chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Kennedy was a hands-on negotiator on those bills and others.
“He’s an important part of closing deals,” said a former Kennedy aide. “So if they weren’t closed, then they might have to wait for his return.”
The 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat was admitted to a Boston hospital May 17 after having a seizure at his Cape Cod home.

Malloy is an exception
Many men grow old and cranky and depressing. Others, I've noted, grow much more tolerant and harmonious with their families and friends.
I've often wondered what triggers the diverging path in maturity and sometimes feel like I've started down one of those paths.
Malloy has always been steadfast but I personally forgive people who recognize that racism is a hateful waste of time. I believe people change and learn over time. Sometimes I think our ability to shed hurt feelings mellows people over time and people who hold on to grudges just get crabby and bitter over time.
ACLU blog of rights email (I'm not here btw.)
I know this would be better with the linked text as links, but I reckon you can Google Blog of Rights if you didn't get it yrselves.

* The authorization of the use of torture by top Bush administration officials,
* The fight for due process at Guantánamo Bay,
* Warrantless wiretapping and domestic surveillance,
* The continued struggle to ensure equality and civil rights for all Americans.
Writers You Can Trust
On the blog you can hear from writers and bloggers like Glenn Greenwald, Salon.com blogger and author of two New York Times bestselling books on constitutional rights. Steve Doocy of Fox News is really "steamed" at MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, and he wants the world to know that Olbermann went "over the line" when he picked Doocy's 20 year old son Peter as his "Worst Person in the World."
On May 5, Steve Doocy invited Peter onto Fox & Friends to provide "a youth view of the Democratic presidential campaign." As reported by RAW STORY, Peter Doocy's segment consisted primarily of asking his fellow students negative leading questions about Barack Obama and Reverend Wright.

Hillary is a Rupert Murdoch Gal!
So, she quotes Fox, appears on Fox, elevates Rove with crediting his view that her campaign as viable to beat McCain, and keeps spending herself into campaign debt. With her reliance on Fox, it seems Hillary is assured by Murdoch that her campaign debt will be paid down later....
Hillary scares me more every day.

Only I didn't say the last part because I wanted something from him and b/c I've never complimented him on anything he does that I like and so that would be rude and also b/c he yells a lot.

As Hillary Rodham Clinton decries the mainstream media for diminishing her chances of capturing the Democratic nomination, she is turning more to the Internet to make her increasingly urgent case.
She held her first blogger-only conference call on Friday, phoning in to about 40 bloggers from the campaign trail in Oregon.

Hans Says a Final Farewell
By David Kurtz - May 20, 2008, 2:14PM
Given our love affair with Hans A. Von Spakovsky, I can't let his op-ed in today's Wall Street Journal go unnoted. Titled "Anatomy of a Beltway Smear Campaign," it is his embittered reaction to being forced, finally, to withdraw his nomination to the FEC last week:
During the past two years, while my nomination to the Federal Election Commission was pending - and before I withdrew last week - friends would call whenever the latest newspaper story or blog post attacking me was planted by political operatives and left-wing advocacy organizations.
They always asked the same question: Why was I putting up with the character assassination that has become the norm in Senate confirmation battles whenever a conservative is nominated for public office? ...
My own hard feelings will pass. But the political system has been damaged once more by the poisonous tactics of the left, and there is no reason to think that the whole sorry spectacle will not be repeated again and again and again. So long as such tactics are accepted and even encouraged by politicians and the media, it will become harder and harder to find ordinary citizens willing to submit to the character assassination that now passes for our confirmation process.
It was a little disappointing not to see TPM mentioned by name, but I couldn't help but think Hans was giving us a nod when he complained about being called a "vote suppressor."

Obama getting Sen. Byrd's endorsement could be about two things
Sen. Byrd has two reasons to endorse Obama:
1. Hillary never listened to the sensible Iraq Invasion speeches Byrd made from the floor of the Senate. And Obama does oppose the continued preemptive military attacks against sovereign nations.
2. Obama has sponsored energy legislation --pro-coal legislation--and research for something called "liquid coal". And Byrd's state of West Virginia is a coal state.

Sen McCaskill "bitterly" Rebukes Ferraro's "Sexist" comments
Barack Obama's Female Supporters understand that there is no sexism in the Obama Campaign... What sexism has been found, whether it's the Airport Nutcrackers, the "Iron my shirt" bullshit, or the occasional MSNBC slip up, has been Exo-Democratic Party and Exo-Obama Campaign. To blame Barack Obama for the sexism that exists in our society is a major setback for Women's Rights and the Feminist Movement. Today, Claire McCaskill, an outspoken strong support of Barack Obama, slams Ferraro's silly remarks:
The Missouri Senator and Obama supporter criticizes the Clinton backer on MSNBC:
"Frankly, it is bitterly disappointing to me that a woman like Geraldine Ferraro would actually publicly say she is thinking about supporting John McCain, and what he would represent to women in this country."
"Really, the issues are so much more important than the people here." ...
As a woman, I have to say, it's time for Ferraro to Retire from the Political field... she's helping no one.

The the thing that keeps gnawing at my heels about Hillary is the John McCain adoration. This is a man who told an awful joke about her daughter. A man that is a fraud and serial adulterer. McCain really respects the ladies, right? Apparently, instead of standing up for their child, the Clinton's made a deal with the devil. Maybe McCain introduced them to Charlie Black. You can bet they got something political out of it.

Sen. Kennedy's illness serves Hillary doesn't it?
The senior senator would have been a force for holding the line against Hillary Clinton's machinations. Who will take his place? If that individual is not strong enough to rope in Hillary's insane mathematics, the rabid DLCers will overwhelm the Dem Convention this summer....

The Fellowship (aka The Family) is a theocratic threat
Obama has Wright.
McCain has Hagee, Parsely, et al.
HILLARY HAS DOUG COE.
Obama's Rev. Wright is a total Progressive clergyman, doing the charitable work and supporting social justice through clear thinking and awareness of historical context.
McCain's pastors Hagee and Parsely and the rest of his group of Christianists with reactionary ideology and profiteering tactics, are total opportunists and succeed in their ambitions by manipulating their "flocks" (read that as $HEEP), and obviously act as petty crooks fingering their marks.
Hillary's Doug Coe of The Fellowship (aka The Family) is THE FASCISTS' PASTOR. Doug Coe works to fashion the death of Democratic Freedoms and insert THEOCRACY instead. And he admittedly, by choice, uses the methods of Hitler (see his written instructions to his devotees, below)! Doug Coe's goals are the goals of an anti-Constitution degenerate who desires to mold a new world religious order based on a twisted "morality" of solidarity and obedience to Authority in a fascist context!
HILLARY'S CONNECTION TO DOUG COE AND THE FELLOWSHIP MUST BE MADE CLEAR AND KNOWN! It's an anti-Constitution connection. It is a NEO-CRUSADE position.
------------------
Further reading on The Fellowship (aka The Family):
The Nation, "Hillary's Nasty Pastorate," by Barbara Ehrenreich
Harper's Magazine March 2003, "Jesus plus nothing" by Jeffrey Sharlet
Mother Jones October 2007, "Hillary's Prayer" by Kathryn Joyce and Jeffrey Sharlet
---------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S. Hillary Clinton clearly expresses how she shares the radicalized views of the fascistic reactionary religious right when she repeatedly makes irresponsible, incendiary, NeoCrusade-mongering statements about "obliterating Iran" and makes a domestic anti-progressive Crusade of denouncing a progressive liberation pastor like Rev. Jeremiah Wright! Hillary is giving us very nasty warning glimpses of what her praying with Doug Coe has wrought in her own life, and we'd better heed them! (Remember, the reason Bush has used the term "Islamo-fascists" is because he chooses to divert attention from the actions of Christo-fascists.)
ADDENDUM:
Why is Hillary (as well as many other U.S.government officials) alligned with this The Fellowship and its goal of THEOCRACY in the U.S.A. and the world?
Hillary's participation in The Fellowship is alarming, and more alarming than anything that she has been mudslinging about Obama and Rev. Wright.
Hillary's participation in The Fellowship is not about "personal belief" and questioning her about The Fellowship is not a religious test as the Obama/Wright flap has been; by the way, such a religious test would be forbidden by the Article Six of the Constitution. No, The Fellowship (aka The Family) steps outside the bounds of religion into THEOCRACY. That's because The Fellowship has goals of directly influencing government and removing separation of church and state. We have every right -- indeed DUTY -- to question Hillary about her longtime work with an organization that holds theocratic intent, a clear intent that goes against our Constitution and its guarantees of religious freedom!
It frightens me to think that Hillary will get any further -- either in 2012 or maybe even sooner if she takes the nomination at the last minute (I suspect the recent illness of the head of the traditional Liberal Dems, Ted Kennedy, will stengthen Hillary's position in whipping up the DLC fervor), without ever answering to the American People about the goals she shares with The Fellowship.
As an introduction, the following is an excerpt from a Harper's Magazine article "Jesus Plus Nothing: Undercover with America's Secret Theocrats" by Jeffrey Sharlet, March 2003.
"....I ran into Doug Coe [leader of The Fellowship since 1969], who was tutoring Todd Tiahrt, a Republican congressman from Kansas. A friendly, plainspoken man with a bright, lazy smile, Coe has worked for the Family since 1959, soon after he graduated from college, and has led it since 1969.
Tiahrt was a short shot glass of a man, two parts flawless hair and one part teeth. He wanted to know the best way “for the Christian to win the race with the Muslim.” The Muslim, he said, has too many babies, while Americans kill too many of theirs.
Doug agreed this could be a problem. But he was more concerned that the focus on labels like “Christian” might get in the way of the congressman's prayers. Religion distracts people from Jesus, Doug said, and allows them to isolate Christ's will from their work in the world.
“People separate it out,” he warned Tiahrt. “'Oh, okay, I got religion, that's private.' As if Jesus doesn't know anything about building highways, or Social Security. We gotta take Jesus out of the religious wrapping.”
“All right, how do we do that?” Tiahrt asked.
“A covenant,” Doug answered. The congressman half-smiled, as if caught between confessing his ignorance and pretending he knew what Doug was talking about. “Like the Mafia,” Doug clarified. “Look at the strength of their bonds.” He made a fist and held it before Tiahrt's face. Tiahrt nodded, squinting. “See, for them it's honor,” Doug said. “For us, it's Jesus.”
Coe listed other men who had changed the world through the strength of the covenants they had forged with their “brothers”: “Look at Hitler,” he said. “Lenin, Ho Chi Minh, Bin Laden.” The Family, of course, possessed a weapon those leaders lacked: the “total Jesus” of a brotherhood in Christ.
“That's what you get with a covenant,” said Coe. “Jesus plus nothing.” [END EXCERPT]
"The Fellowship's long-term goal is "a leadership led by God-leaders of all levels of society who direct projects as they are led by spirit." (excerpted from Mother Jones article ""Hillary's Prayer" Oct. 2007 issue)
The Fellowship's "leader" Doug Coe has targeted government leaders mostly and when that goal is applied to leaders in government the end product is the death of separation of church and state. It's a tidy formula: Justify a rightwing governmental position on the basis of rightwing religious morality.
Has Hillary taken the bait? In her autobiography, Hillary has called Doug Coe a mentor of hers.
David Coe, Doug Coe's son and heir apparent to The Fellowship secret "church", has said that the intent of The Fellowship is world domination.
Indeed, Hillary Clinton, a member ever since 1993, has ALREADY proved she is personally pursuing The Fellowship's goal: she has made clear that she will embrace American rightwing majority 'morality' over government-guaranteed individual rights. "Clinton suggests as much herself in her 1990 book, 'It Takes a Village', where she writes approvingly of religious groups' access to schools, lessons in Scripture, and 'virtue' making a return to the classroom." (excerpted from Mother Jones' article.) If teaching kids religion in public school is not a poster child for the Death of separation of church and state, I don't know what is!
The main assault on separation of church and state so far has been the millions of taxdollars diverted from government programs for health and human services and given to religious groups apparently without oversight. The Clintons were responsible for beginning this assault which Bush now has increased. If legislation promotes "conservative morality", Hillary Clinton appears to be a dependable promoter and supporter. And don't forget, Hillary is for prayer in public schools.
And what of liberal ideals of social justice? It will be replaced by "Conservative [so-called] morality" as was seen when Senator Hillary Clinton refused to support funding an anti-human trafficking measure unless it included a condemnation of prostitution. Social Justice replaced with prudishness, intolerance, and a prim stinginess.
There is a clear reason it appeared so easy for Hillary to trash Rev. Wright: Rev. Wright has worked for liberal ideals and a social justice for each individual and group that leads to inner strength, something one can feel inside! That is the antithesis of The Fellowship's reason for being; The Fellowship is OF THE ELITE FOR THE ELITE. Hillary wants you to prove you're her kind of Christian by publicly praying in grade school, middle school and high school. Clearly The Fellowship (aka The Family) has affected Hillary Rodham Clinton.
