Seder V. Maron 11am Tuesday

someone on the IM remind me to hit record!!

Special Note:  This is to my friend from Albuquerque.  There have been times in the past when I have been protective of you, when I felt your prescence was interesting and challenging. More recently, we've both had fun, me with messing with your nic, you continually signing up new nics with other people's email addresses. Sadly, it's become tedious, I'd appreciate it if you could call it a day and you would leave now. Thanks.

right-oh!

Thanks for the heads-up, Sammy.

edit: p.s. Twitter->Jabber IM is working, at the moment.

Bush's Foreign Policy Has Proved Esp. Lethal

Dr. Jeff Sachs has been a vocal critic of the Iraq War. If Sachs is bad, then I am part of the bad club. I believe that we can -- and must -- do better.

I think providing medical care and feeding people are parts of the solution. Yes, we can make a difference.

(I know there are some who argue that poor people should not be saved. Better to let'em die today -- rather than giving them false hope about living in this world.)

Yes, Sachs can be bold and he has the audacity of hope. However, I would rather live with hope and fight for social justice. I like many of his ideas and I applaud him for boldly suggesting that we can end poverty -- if we choose to do so.

For the record, I disagree with some of Sachs' ideas that he suggested approx. 20 years ago. However, I believe his ideas have evolved since that time (based on his articles, books, and interviews).

America's Ignorance is a Threat to Humanity

by Jeffrey D. Sachs

Excerpts:

But the U.S. government's intelligence failures extend far beyond the CIA and the countries where America is at war or chasing terrorists.

In the world's poorest regions, from the Andes to Central Asia, the U.S. government seems to operate almost blindly, facing challenges that it simply does not understand and therefore can't resolve.

This isn't a problem that started in this Bush administration, though the combination of ignorance and arrogance in President George W. Bush's foreign policy has proved especially lethal.

The undoing of U.S. foreign policy is captured in the budget numbers.

Long gone are the Marshall Plan times, when America dedicated several percent of its gross domestic product to European reconstruction.

The United States will spend about $450 billion this year on the military but only $15 billion on official development assistance.

The 30-to-1 ratio is mirrored by a similar imbalance in American thinking. America's military expertise is undoubted. America's ability to understand what exists before and after wars in low-income countries is nearly nonexistent.

Changing all of this will require much more than recognizing the errors of the Iraq war.

"America's Ignorance Is A Threat To Humanity"

America's Ignorance is a Threat to Humanity

by Jeffrey D. Sachs

Excerpts:

A good starting point would be to rebuild USAID into a pre-eminent agency for understanding and resolving human catastrophes and security threats arising from extreme poverty.

This agency requires a professional, nonpoliticized leadership and staff; a new mandate to study a world economy of startling inequalities; increased financial resources to help fragile and impoverished countries before they fall into chaos; and a rank as a cabinet-level department, so that expertise gets a hearing at the centers of power.

[John Edwards would possibly be a good candidate for a cabinet-level position of this type.]

America's efforts will need to go beyond one agency, however.

The United States must have leaders who recognize that the problems of the poor aren't trifles to leave to do-gooders, but are vital strategic issues.

For the first time in decades, America must strive to understand problems - tropical disease, malnutrition and the like - that are unfamiliar to Americans but are urgent concerns of billions of people abroad.

In the case of a superpower, ignorance is not bliss; it is a threat to Americans and to humanity.

The Metamorphosis of the Conservative Movement
By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
May 19, 2008

Excerpt:

In theory conservatives adore the Constitution and seek to protect it with appeals to “original intent.” In practice conservatives hate the Constitution as the protector of homosexuals and abortionists. Conservatives regard civil liberties as coddling devices for criminals and terrorists. They see the First Amendment as a foolish protection for sedition. The neoconservative magazine, Commentary, has called for the New York Times to be prosecuted for informing Americans that President Bush was illegally spying on them without warrants.

The conservative assault on the US Constitution is deeply entrenched. The Federalist Society, an organization of Republican attorneys from which the Republican Party chooses its Justice Department appointees and nominees to the federal bench, was organized as an assault on the checks and balances in the Constitution.

The AP is reporting that Republican Congressman Vito Fossella will not run for re-election after revelations that he fathered a child with his mistress and was arrested for drunk driving:

New York Rep. Vito Fossella will not seek re-election after a series of damaging revelations about a child from an extramarital affair, two people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

Waxman discloses evidence that White House influenced EPA California waiver
Posted by Frank O'Donnell

It's been a matter of extreme controversy since last December, when EPA -- confronted with an impending front-page Washington Post exclusive -- suddenly announced it was denying California's request to enforce its greenhouse gas standards for motor vehicles.

After months of dogged investigation, California Rep. Henry Waxman disclosed today that he had evidence that the White House tampered with the decision. The issue is certain to come up tomorrow as EPA Admistrator Steve Johnson appears before Waxman's panel.

A Majority Of Better Democrats

by digby

There has been a lot of chatter over the week-end about the apparently startling notion that Democrats winning in conservative districts might produce more conservative Democrats. I posted about it here. Matt Stoller wrote about it here, Jason Rosenbaum, here. It's an interesting dilemma for progressives in the Democratic Party which is, as far as I can tell, encouraging all the candidates to run on a vague "change" agenda rather than explicit progressive policies. So, you get a bigger majority, but it's less clear what it's going to do. I guess we'll see.

New NSA Whistleblower Tells of Faulty WMD Evidence

By David Swanson

David Murfee Faulk was a translator in the Navy, working in Arabic and Iraqi dialect. In April 2004 he began working for the National Security Agency (NSA) at Fort Gordon outside Augusta, Georgia. (He now writes, under the name Murfee Faulk, for the Metro Spirit newspaper in Augusta, but he has never written about what he did for the NSA.)

Faulk says that in May 2004 he found an extremely large text file containing grid coordinates for alleged chemical weapons sites in Iraq. Faulk showed it to his supervisor, who was surprised. But he was not surprised that the file existed, only that it had not been deleted. The supervisor said he had believed all such files had been deleted, and that there had been a great many of them. In fact, according to this supervisor, U.S. Special Forces had gone to the locations and found nothing.

That's what usually happens, Faulk's supervisor told him, when you get something from the Israelis. "Four out of five times it's complete and total bullshit."

I asked veteran Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst Ray McGovern what he made of this, and he said that there is "no such thing as a 'friendly' intelligence service. Reporting from liaison services always needs to be taken with utmost reserve. That goes in spades for what comes from the Israelis, the more so since they have unique, yes unique, access to the White House and Pentagon, and are thus able to circumvent the intelligence bureaucracy set up to vet and evaluate raw intelligence and prevent unverified and/or tendentious 'intelligence' from reaching senior officials, lest they be misled."

Obama Won Three Months Ago: AP Finally Noticed !

Meanwhile: Clinton is trying to bribe super delegates.

Obama to reach delegate milestone Tuesday
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama will reach a significant milestone Tuesday as he marches toward the Democratic nomination for president — a majority of the pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses.

Obama will still be short of the overall number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination, unless he were to suddenly receive an avalanche of endorsements from the party and elected officials known as superdelegates. But the Illinois senator's campaign is touting the delegate milestone as a big step in defeating his rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

"A clear majority of elected delegates will send an unmistakable message — the people have spoken, and they are ready for change," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in a memo to supporters Monday.

"As we near victory in one contest, the next challenge is already heating up," Plouffe wrote. "President Bush and Senator McCain have begun coordinating their attacks on Barack Obama in an effort to extend their failed policies for a third term."

E-Voting Machines Short Circuit Election Transparency,

But the Danger is Even Worse Than You May Realize....

Guest Blogged by Michael Dean..

The software most likely to steal elections is the BALLOT DEFINITION SOFTWARE loaded onto paper-based optical-scan and DRE (usually, touch-screen) voting machines in county elections offices across the U.S. just before the machines are sealed with security tape and transported to election polling locations.

And yet, the frightening reality is that there is little or no oversight of that software itself, nor of the people --- usually sub-contractors, who could be anyone from a non-U.S. citizen, to a criminal, to a political party operative --- who program that ballot definition software. Moreover, there is little or no testing of such software, despite the fact that it stores the ballot positions for all candidates and initiatives on every ballot, on every voting machine, and tallies the votes for all of them on election day.

For all of the concerns about election fraud, via the electronic voting systems in use across the nation today, and the eye on the source code for the software itself, few seem to have their eye on the ballot definition software, which can --- even on e-voting systems where the hardware, and main program software has been tested, certified, and audited --- succeed in flipping an election without detection, either by error, or on purpose.

Concerned yet? Read on...

[Note: Talk starts 20 min. 15 sec. into program] In a major address, Noam Chomsky says there has been little change in the conventional debate over a US invasion abroad: from Vietnam to Iraq, the two main political parties and political pundits differ only on the tactics of US goals, which are assumed to be legitimate. On the other hand, public opposition to war has also remained consistent, Chomsky says, but, whether Iraqi or American, ignored.

Clinton vs Obama on Blackwater

Jeremy Scahill is the author of the bestselling Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. He is an award-winning investigative journalist and correspondent for the national radio and TV program Democracy Now! Jeremy discusses why no presidential candidate plans on fully leaving Iraq.
---

This month, for four days in Washington, DC, beginning on March 13, there was a second Winter Soldier gathering -- 37 years after the first. Organized by the protest group Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), US veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan since the 9/11 attack on New York will testify about their experiences.

They presented photographs and videos, recorded with mobile phones and digital cameras, to back up their allegations -- of brutality, torture and murder.

The veterans are not against the military and seek not to indict it -- instead they seek to shine a light on the bigger picture: that the Abu Ghraib prison regime and the Haditha massacre of innocent Iraqis are not isolated incidents perpetrated by "bad seeds" as the military suggests, but evidence of an endemic problem. They were tasked to do terrible things and point the finger up the chain of command, which ignores, diminishes or covers up routine abuse and atrocities.

Yes Bob..

One crazy thing is that a few parents have complained that the lib. allows people under 18 on to myspace...As it is noww, the parent(s) either say 'yes my kid can be on the internet when I'm not there' -or 'No they cannot be...'
One parent thinks NO kids should be allowed on myspace in the lib., whether their parents say it's ok or not...And is willing to petition for this....

Thoughts? You don't have kids right? Me either...so I sometimes tend to think from their perspective...

Master Musicians of Joujouka "Boujeloud"

Description: Opens with Boujeloud whipping at the camera. like Pan Boujeloud whips with a branch of leaves bestowing fertility and good luck.
This clip is the last 6 minutes of a 2 hour performance. The musicians hardly move while they create the intense force needed to drive Boujeloud, or Pan from their village.
Boujeloud dances in a frenzy in the dark.
The clip opens with Boujeloud whipping at the lens. Boujeloud imparts fertility and blessings with flicks of his stick. In Joujouka it is said that if Boujeloud’s flailing branches touch a young women she soon be pregnant.

Boujeloud dances as The Master Musicians of Joujouka play in an informal session. Billy Corgan speaks Moroccan at the end.

The instrumental music in Joujouka forms two distinct repertoires with very different origins. Firstly there is the music called Boujeloudia which is traditionally performed annually on the Islamic feast of Aid el Kebir. This suite of music is played while a boy sewn into fresh goat skins dances in frenzy. The music is used to keep the goat-man at bay. The music for Boujeloud, or the Father of Skins, is frantic and has six movements which would equate to a symphony or the score of an opera if it were European classical music. The festival and ritual originate in the worship of the God Pan. Pan was evoked in the springtime to ensure the fertility of both the crops and the people. The people of Joujouka have kept this ancient tradition alive.

I'm thinking it is War Dog and his many nics. He said he was from the Kansas City area, but that could have been a big lie.

It sounds to me like Sam was the one that took down the War Dog nic on this newer blog so that started the POT 97 persona. Maybe POT 97 got banned and he switched to War Blue Dog.

Just my assumption. Could be wrong.

The phrasing and the spelling was a dead give-away between those two nics though. Still think he was foreign born though.

That would be Mr Bubble himself, Alan Greenspan. The same Alan Greenspan that McCain loves and is going to follow for his economic guidance. Notice how Soros, a trader himself, is not calling for "lower taxes and less regulation" as we hear from McCain? Just the opposite, Soros is calling for better regulation.
Mr Soros believes that central bankers are partly to blame for the credit crunch because of their past behaviour in bailing out the financial sector whenever it got into trouble for over-lending, the so-called moral hazard problem.

He said that the central banks should explicitly target asset bubbles such as housing booms and try to stop them getting out of control, which is something they have resisted doing so far.

And he said that tougher but smarter regulation would be needed in the future in order to reduce the excess supply of credit in the economy.

But remember, inflation isn't much of a problem. It's all just a baseless conspiracy without any support, right?
The per diem charges Memorial Day last year saw motorists pay about $1.285-billion. In 2006, the cost was $1.122-billion; and in 2005, it was $832-million. If one goes back to 2002, the daily cost of gasoline was about $534-million. Before prices top out, we could be making $1-billion more per day in gasoline payments than we made six years ago.

Hell yeah. McCain wants to throw the entire system to the dogs and just let people fend for themselves against the same Wall Street goons that gambled and lost. The same Wall Street crowd that had to be bailed out would love to have America's Social Security money so they can cook up a new scheme to squeeze even more money from regular people so they can continue to live their luxurious lifestyle. McCain, like his mentor Bush, loves the idea of privatizing everything but unlike the McCain family or the Bush family the rest of the country does not have trust fund cash to spend on hiring teams of accountants and tax attorneys and investment directors. Those people are expensive and considered normal to wealthy elitists like McCain and Bush, proving again just how out of touch McCain is with the middle class.

Once again, if Wall Street wants to make money, let them make money the old fashioned way by earning it. Quit sponging corporate welfare from the damned middle class. I see how Wall Street and the GOP would love this plan but what about everyone else? McCain has some explaining to do, especially in light of the recent Wall Street collapse.

McCain targeted for opposing

McCain targeted for opposing vets college aid bill By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer
Tue May 20, 12:10 AM ET

Democrats and their allies are ready to convert Sen. John McCain's stance on college aid for military veterans into a presidential campaign cause.

McCain, the all-but-nominated Republican presidential candidate, opposes a Democratic-backed bill that would significantly expand the breadth of education benefits for veterans, first adopted for those returning from World War II. Democrats want the proposal included in a war spending bill the Senate is scheduled to vote on this week.

Sen. Barack Obama, McCain's most likely general election opponent, already has raised objections to McCain's resistance. And on Tuesday, a veterans' group that has been critical of the war in Iraq is launching an ad in Washington to pressure McCain to change his mind.

By taking issue with McCain on the subject of veterans, Democrats hope to weaken one of his biggest assets — his personal biography as a former Navy pilot who became a prisoner of the North Vietnamese and endured torture at the hands of his captors.

The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia and Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, also veterans of Vietnam, would guarantee full tuition payments to veterans at any public school in their home state. Its expected cost is $52 billion over 10 years.

McCain says the legislation is too expensive and has proposed his own version, which would increase the monthly benefit available to most veterans to $1,500 from $1,100. It would not offer the equivalent of a full scholarship.

The ad by VoteVets.org Action Fund, features Iraq and Afghanistan veterans noting that both McCain and President Bush oppose the bill.

"McCain thinks covering a fraction of our education is enough," one veteran says. Another one, pictured recovering from head wounds, adds in a voiceover: "We didn't give a fraction in Iraq. We gave 100 percent."

"Senator McCain" an announcer concludes, "we respect your service. Please respect ours."

The ad is running Tuesday and Wednesday on broadcast and cable television stations in Washington, primarily during news broadcasts. VoteVets is running a similar ad targeting Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, in San Antonio and Waco — two Texas markets with military bases.

Other veteran's groups — from Veterans of Foreign Wars to the American Legion — support the Democratic bill. But VoteVets, which has been aggressive in its criticism of Bush's war policies, is the first to take McCain on directly.

"He's trying to run interference for the White House with a watered down bill," said Jon Soltz, an Iraq war veteran and chairman of VoteVets.org. "How could this not be an issue in the presidential campaign if he doesn't vote for this bill? There is no way for this to go away if he votes against it."

VoteVets is a nonprofit corporation and part of a Democratic-leaning coalition of war critics that has vowed to spend millions linking McCain to Bush's war policies. Earlier this year, VoteVets ran an ad on Washington cable stations urging McCain to abandon his commitment to Iraq.

The Pentagon opposes the Webb-Hagel bill, saying the benefit could hurt retention by encouraging members of the military to leave after serving only three years.

Obama, campaigning in West Virginia last week, said the bill is necessary to make veteran's benefits match the rising costs of tuition.

"I have great respect for John McCain's service to this country and I know he loves it dearly and honors those who serve," Obama said. "But he is one of the few senators of either party who oppose this bill because he thinks it's too generous. I couldn't disagree more."

Obama eyes media with

Obama eyes media with promise of antitrust push

Jeff Mason
Reuters US Online Report Top News

May 19, 2008 08:14 EST

PENDLETON, Oregon (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama said on Sunday he would pursue a vigorous antitrust policy if he becomes U.S. president and singled out the media industry as one area where government regulators would need to be watchful as consolidation increases.

"I will assure that we will have an antitrust division that is serious about pursuing cases," the Illinois senator told an audience of mostly senior citizens in Oregon.

"There are going to be areas, in the media for example where we're seeing more and more consolidation, that I think (it) is legitimate to ask...is the consumer being served?"

Obama, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination to contest November's presidential election against Republican Sen. John McCain, criticized President George W. Bush's administration for lax supervision of major mergers, though he did not cite specific examples or companies.

"We're going to have an antitrust division in the Justice Department that actually believes in antitrust law. We haven't had that for the last seven, eight years," Obama said.

"Some of the consolidations that have been taking place, I think, may be anti-competitive."

Obama advisers have also said he would crack down on any competition lapses in the energy sector that have resulted from big corporate mergers.

In a position statement for the American Antitrust Institute issued previously, Obama highlighted drug and insurance companies, saying his administration would work to prevent agreements that kept cheaper generic drugs from entering the market.

He also said his administration would ensure that drug and insurance companies were not abusing monopoly positions by instituting "unjustified" price increases.

Obama told reporters a new approach to antitrust policy in general may be needed.

"We live in a globalized economy and we probably have to update how we approach antitrust to figure out what is truly uncompetitive behavior on the part of monopolies or oligopolies and what are just big successful companies that need to be big in order to compete internationally," he said.

Senior Israeli official: ‘Bush intends to attack Iran before the end of his term.’
The Jerusalem Post reports that a senior Israeli official said that President Bush and Vice President Cheney are of the belief that military action against Iran is necessary and that such an attack could be coming soon:

US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran in the upcoming months, before the end of his term, Army Radio quoted a senior official in Jerusalem as saying Tuesday.

The official claimed that a senior member of the president’s entourage, which concluded a trip to Israel last week, said during a closed meeting that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were of the opinion that military action was called for.

However, the official continued, “the hesitancy of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice” was preventing the administration from deciding to launch such an attack on the Islamic Republic, for the time being.

thespian can someone analize this

seems straightforward to me - sam has had it with the asshole with multiple nics posting from an albuquerque ip (sam either doesn't know or doesn wanna mention any more specific identifiers) and finally banned him/her after our repeated complaints and maybe the nazi picture posting as a reference to obama large crowds in Kentucky was the last straw, thogh i am not sure it was him or her or whichever of their impersonation it was that posted that picture.

I myself think that using more than one nic is not cool, what would be the purpose if not sneaky attempt at gaming the discourse, trying to fool the rest of the bloggers (of course unless it's done in jest!) the purpose might be to reinforce one's message, to give the impressione one's opinion is shared by at least another albeit a fake another, who knows, in any case i don't like this tactic, because it goes against the blog camaraderie somehow, we have a mental picture of one another, gathered through various blogs interventions, comments, embeds, writing style and all of this mental imaging goes with one's nic. We don't have much else to go by in forming opinions and feelings of friendship affinity or even dislike with one another. Using a different nic throws a wrench in this mechanism and is not cool... MHO

US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran

i would say that if obama is ahead in all the polls leading up to the election that its pretty certain. but not for the reason you might think.

despite protestations bush is very concerned with his legacy. he knows he has screwed up royally but thinks the blur of fifty years will rehabilitate his presidency. while most of us would firmly disagree, its he who has his finger on the button. if he believes obama will win, then he knows iraq is over. that will lead him to double down and take on iran as a last desperate gamble to create the new american century's flower in the desert.

A-ha!

ybe the nazi picture posting as a reference to obama large crowds in Kentucky was the last straw

I didn't see that. I usually don't pay attention to annoying trolls anyway. *TLL*

McCain Hits Obama's Ex-Terrorist Ties

By Craig Crawford | May 20, 2008 6:00 AM | Permalink | Comments (140)

Twice in recent weeks John McCain or his aides have shown considerable eagerness to raise the issue of Barack Obama's past associations with an "unrepentant domestic terrorist."

Responding over the weekend to Obama's attacks against the presumptive Republican nominee's ties to lobbyists, McCain aides emailed this nugget to reporters: "Just a few years ago when Barack Obama was beginning his career in politics he was launching it at the home of William Ayers, an unrepentant domestic terrorist who his chief strategist said Senator Obama was certainly friendly with."

McCain himself recently brought up the Ayers matter, indicating just how aggressively the Republicans plan to keep pushing this story. Ayers was a leader of the Weathermen Underground, an anti-war group responsible for bombings of the New York City police headquarters in 1970, of the Capitol building in 1971 and of the Pentagon in 1972.

Obama has appeared on panels with Ayers, served on a foundation board with him and held a 1995 campaign event at the home of Ayers and his wife, also a former Weather Underground member. Ayers gave a modest sum of money to one of Obama's campaigns.

At a recent debate Obama minimized his ties Ayers, saying, "The notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn't make much sense."

McCain apparently sees it differently. Last month he said Obama should give "not only repudiation, but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist."

Sams rules for the blog are

shit one hour to go

got mixed up with est central crap and thought time was up!

I would like to know what Sams rules for the blog are...

rule number one: there are no rules.

rule number two: see rule number one.

also the one about feeding a certain blogger setups...

seriously, i don't know that there are any real rules, the idea is that we're supposed to behave as adults and get along and in the process try not to be overly offensive.

that being said, everyone has different degrees of whats offensive to them but hey.

ready for the show

me thinks you'll need a 2nd pot of coffee or tea. we gots an hour to go.

make it stop already! all these balls...way too early

Last November Fox Sports took science to new lows by launching a 50 mpg tennis ball at one brave man's balls.

It's like being 5 years old and waiting for Christmas morning...

I was talking to my son yesterday about this

wacky blog and he said it is possible to list offensive bloggers and have them blocked on a personal level..so I could list anyone I did not like for whatever reason...I emailed sam about it and asked for Incubus addy but no one responded...so I surmise that everyone gets some kind of charge out of being in the controversy...fine with me...I am a real good spitter...

does anyone know how to embed a wave file on the blog?

I decided long ago - Conservatives don't have the foggist idea

of the constitution.

Torture - If we say
Illegal searches - If we say
Enemy - If we say

Look overthere - everyone is bad - we must kill them all - if we say!

There is not one sense of intelligent discussion in regards to any and all actions they are willing to undergo in the gise of fear and threat.

And what is even more disturbing

Is that I think alot of our Armed Forces do not even understand why they were the uniform and what they have sworn to uphold.

Conservatives want a ruler - not a president.

(PS - I should no - married to one!)

LIEBERMAN CALLS ON GOOGLE TO TAKE DOWN TERRORIST CONTENT
YouTube Videos Are Produced by Al Qaeda and Other Terror Organizations; Videos Show Attacks on U.S. Soldiers, Civilians

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Monday called on Google to remove Internet video content produced by terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda. The videos – readily available on YouTube –show assassinations, deaths of U.S. soldiers and civilians, weapons training, incendiary speeches by al-Qaeda leadership, and other material intended to encourage violence against the West.

The videos are branded with Al-Qaeda logos – a practice detailed in a recent bipartisan Committee staff report entitled “Violent Islamist Extremism, the Internet, and the Homegrown Terrorist Threat.” These production logos are easily recognizable, making it easy for Google to remove them from its Internet sites. Lieberman called on Google to enforce its own community standards against videos that show gratuitous violence or people getting “hurt, attacked, or humiliated.”

does anyone know how to embed a wave file on the blog?

i think its been done but i'm guessing that you need to get the content out in a public location and then bind a quicktime widget or something like that to it. i would imagine incubus or fernando can tell you.

i always thought that having personal ignore lists would be a nice idea. if you've ever looked at the blog when its misbehaving and dumping sql statements out you can tell that every refresh and post are going into a database and that the page that is getting painted for you is being run through a db query mechanism. it shouldn't be that hard to have an additional table that associates ignore names with a given userid and filters the results of the query accordingly.

fat lady sings

sorry Lu', this wave file is the sound of a man spitting a lougee (however one spells that disgusting function)

Curious Pinker

How often to bloggers get banned here? What crimes. The only rules I recall is: Do not feed Crank straight lines.

I would like to see a list of past trolls. For the fun of it.

Ignore on a personal level

Totally possible b/c you can do it on The Nation's blogs. If no one to do with this site knows(which I'm sure they do) they could maybe ask the webmaster over there.

Of course, a lot of the time you and up putting people back just so you can know what everyone is throwing snark about.

Will Mitch McConnell Be The Next Outed Gay Republican?

Voting-wise, Larry Craig's record is a bit to the right of Miss McConnell's but, when it comes right down to it, the two of them see almost eye to eye on everything: both are classic Bush-Cheney rubber stamps. Several of my friends can't understand why two closeted homosexuals have been so virulently anti-gay. I'm not a psychologist (though I gave it a shot yesterday) so let's just stick to the politics on this. And the GOP leadership is playing hardball-- against one of their own. After his pathetic "I'm not gay" press conference yesterday Tim Russert, on Nightly News, said "I talked to Republicans today -- they just want Senator Craig to exit, to leave."

The Urban Dictionary is always so helpful...

making it easy for Google to remove them from its Internet sites

what an idiot. you are talking about a video stream which uses the brain to decipher what is being viewed. the only way they could do this would be to manually review everything and censor it accordingly.

why is it that only wingers want to censor reality?

listening to Mitt

talk about what a nambie pie Barack is...pot calling the kettle black methinks...

Google would have to pull every GOP/RNC video to comply.

Lieberman called on Google to enforce its own community standards against videos that show gratuitous violence or people getting “hurt, attacked, or humiliated."

Dialogue with Sen. Lieberman on terrorism videos
Monday, May 19, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Posted by the YouTube Team

(Cross-posted from the YouTube blog)

Last week, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) contacted us to voice his concerns about seeing videos from several Islamic terrorist organizations on YouTube. We appreciated our dialogue with Senator Lieberman and his staff and wanted to explain to the YouTube community how we responded to his concerns.

First, some background: hundreds of thousands of videos are uploaded to YouTube every day. Because it is not possible to pre-screen this much content, we have developed an innovative and reliable community policing system that involves our users in helping us enforce YouTube's standards. Millions of users report potential violations of our Community Guidelines by selecting the "Flag" link while watching videos.

Senator Lieberman's staff identified numerous videos that they believed violated YouTube's Community Guidelines. In response to his concerns, we examined and ended up removing a number of videos from the site, primarily because they depicted gratuitous violence, advocated violence, or used hate speech. Most of the videos, which did not contain violent or hate speech content, were not removed because they do not violate our Community Guidelines.

Senator Lieberman stated his belief, in a letter sent today, that all videos mentioning or featuring these groups should be removed from YouTube -- even legal nonviolent or non-hate speech videos. While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds. Of course, users are always free to express their disagreement with a particular video on the site, by leaving comments or their own response video. That debate is healthy.

The constant juvenile nature of disinformation was tiresome. Every single simple point was completely re-invented with a new historical diatribe. The "other points of view" were aimed more at dividing and irritating people than advancing a constructive position. Who needs that? It might have been acceptable if there was even one shred of humor or humility.

Good riddance even though the ego of that one will bring him/her back unfortunately...

No no no no no!!!! NO!!! We're NOT taking him!!!!!

He's also virulently anti-10-year-old-boy (Graham Frost), so maybe ole moon face is a pedophile instead? (I'm grasping at straws here...)

Did Rupert Murdoch get his lapdog George Bush to blast NBC for him?

Just seems awfully suspicious that a day after I read a big story about how Murdoch is all upset at NBC because Keith Olbermann is mean to O'Reilly, and the story details how Murdoch told NBC he was going to have the NY Post attack NBC if they weren't nicer, suddenly the White House is attacking NBC, and buried at the very bottom of the story we find out that the White House is upset at - who? Why Keith Olbermann!

Gillespie also used the letter to complain about other aspects of NBC News coverage and to lodge a complaint about "blatant partisan talk show hosts like Christopher Matthews and Keith Olbermann at MSNBC," both of whom have come under attack from Republicans.

It's good to be Rupert and have such a patsy in the White House.

PS Note to Washington Post: People didn't ASSUME that Bush's Hitler remarks were about Obama, as you claim in the story. The White House told people it was about Obama. But mentioning that fact would kill the appearance of impartiality that you like to give by never reporting the actual facts, and only reporting the spin.

I blogged there a lot

around Texas and Ohio time. Frosty Zoom totally had the scoop on "Naftagate."

I have been there less lately. Mask is a bit too omnipresent and in general it's such a boy's club.

KVH isn't perfect, or a super-duper journalist, but people just take any opportunity to savage her in a gender-based way. It gets tired.

Indeed. Don't you think it's a little odd that Larry Craig and Mark Foley both belong to John Ashcroft's singing group, the Singing Senators. Trent "the cheerleader" Lott, I don't know, could be?

Yesterday's record heat (99) blended perfectly with the much cooler pool. I couldn't get out until it got time to grill. It was great. I'm taking Friday off for a four day weekend and really looking forward to it.

I wish Sam would put a show together for the holiday. That would really make my day.

I hope someone out there has their IM up and reminds Sam to hit record. I don't have access to IM where I am at.

...that it was Gravitas/Intellect/Something-new-yesterday-i-don't-remember. If i had more time to actually engage the character i would have, since generally it was someone posting such easily refuted arguments and in general not being insulting. I tried countering a few posts and i saw many more people making honest efforts to respectfully engage, but whoever it was only seemed interested in posting ridiculous stuff and trying to create a wedge. Screw that.

I actually think it would be good if someone from "the other side" wanted to post, but only if we all remained respectful. And if that poster would respect verifiable facts at least as much as right-wing talking points.

But as long as i'm dreaming, i want a pony.

Respect begets respect. An honest offering of opinion begets an honest offering in return.

When I was new to the blog I presented an argument defending the right and practice of not voting (and the apathetic non-vote) for various reasons. It incensed some people. They vigorously refuted my argument.

No blood was spilled and, to my knowledge, no lasting resentments exist.

Honest discussion can be done. It is a good idea to use and reuse the same carefully constructed phrases to present each point in your argument. (It is my opinion that; It is often the case; Statistics indicate that...etc.) By using the same phrases, one is less likely to allow emotionally-driven potshots to enter one's discourse (If you weren't so brain dead; If you'd take your head out of your ass; You have a point...on top of your head; etc.)

In conclusion, Spunk-Monkey, if you were any more full of shit, you'd be buried in a back yard.
