Relax -- that Hoffman Estates 'disaster' was only a drill

Suburban firefighters, police officers and other emergency workers gathered today with hundreds of volunteers at the Sears Centre arena in Hoffman Estates to test how efficient the area's emergency plan is when it comes to distributing antibiotics to combat threats such as anthrax.

More than 20 emergency departments were on hand for the drill, where volunteer victims were given scripted roles. Some of the volunteers were to get microchips like those attached to the shoes of marathon runners to time how long it takes them to go through the lines. Event sponsors were hoping for as many as 3,000 volunteers.

Emergency personnel, under the watch of the Cook County and Illinois departments of public health, were to hand out pill bottles.

Though the exercise will last only a few hours, the full-scale emergency plan's goal is to be able to distribute medicines to a population of 50,000 to 100,000 within a 72-hour window. The thinking is that under real threat, a family member could go through the screening and bring pills home to relatives.

Investigators searched Tuesday for one or more arsonists believed to have started nine wildfires that have destroyed or damaged about 100 homes on Florida's Atlantic coast, and crews continued to battle the blazes.

The relentless flames were burning for a third straight day, taxing firefighters and overwhelming residents who were trying to save their homes with garden hoses.

The state's largest blaze has charred about 3,800 acres, or nearly 6 square miles, in the neighboring towns of Palm Bay and Malabar.

The Senate, in a direct challenge to President Bush, voted Tuesday to temporarily halt the shipment of thousands of barrels of oil a day into the government's emergency reserve.

Both Democrats and Republicans said such shipments make no sense when oil is costing more than $120 a barrel and could better be used to add supplies to a tight market and possibly lower prices.

"We are buying the most expensive crude oil in the history of the world and storing it," said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D. "When American consumers are burning at the stake by high energy prices, the government ought not be carrying the wood."

We started covering Sen. Barack Obama's inability to hire good staffers in June 2007, when he blamed staffers for some opposition research trying to link Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to outsourcing in India; for injecting some venom in the David Geffen/Hillary Clinton fight; and for missing an event with firefighters in New Hampshire.

In December, we noted again that Obama was blaming the answers on a 1996 questionnaire on a staffer; and was blaming his touring with "cured" ex-gay gospel singer Donnie McClurkin (which antagonized gays and lesbians) on bad vetting by his staff.

Those five buck-passing incidents were apparently not enough.

So, for those keeping track at home, that's ten instances of Obama publicly blaming his staff for various screw-ups.

Charges Dismissed Against Detainee

The Pentagon official in charge of war crimes cases declined to permit a case to proceed against one of six detainees charged in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, dismissing the charges against a man who had been subjected to aggressive interrogation at the United States prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

The decision by the official, Susan J. Crawford, whose title is Convening Authority of the war crimes tribunals, came with no explanation in e-mail messages to defense lawyers after 5 p.m. Monday. It has yet to be released by the Pentagon.

In 1996, Tom Wolfe wrote a brilliant essay called “Sorry, but Your Soul Just Died,” in which he captured the militant materialism of some modern scientists.

To these self-confident researchers, the idea that the spirit might exist apart from the body is just ridiculous. Instead, everything arises from atoms. Genes shape temperament. Brain chemicals shape behavior. Assemblies of neurons create consciousness. Free will is an illusion. Human beings are “hard-wired” to do this or that. Religion is an accident.

In this materialist view, people perceive God’s existence because their brains have evolved to confabulate belief systems. You put a magnetic helmet around their heads and they will begin to think they are having a spiritual epiphany. If they suffer from temporal lobe epilepsy, they will show signs of hyperreligiosity, an overexcitement of the brain tissue that leads sufferers to believe they are conversing with God.

Wolfe understood the central assertion contained in this kind of thinking: Everything is material and “the soul is dead.” He anticipated the way the genetic and neuroscience revolutions would affect public debate. They would kick off another fundamental argument over whether God exists.

Lo and behold, over the past decade, a new group of assertive atheists has done battle with defenders of faith. The two sides have argued about whether it is reasonable to conceive of a soul that survives the death of the body and about whether understanding the brain explains away or merely adds to our appreciation of the entity that created it.

In unexpected ways, science and mysticism are joining hands and reinforcing each other. That’s bound to lead to new movements that emphasize self-transcendence but put little stock in divine law or revelation. Orthodox believers are going to have to defend particular doctrines and particular biblical teachings. They’re going to have to defend the idea of a personal God, and explain why specific theologies are true guides for behavior day to day. I’m not qualified to take sides, believe me. I’m just trying to anticipate which way the debate is headed. We’re in the middle of a scientific revolution. It’s going to have big cultural effects.

I think this might be a really bad step .. because it will just reinforce Bush's resistance to tap the Reserves..

"The Senate demanded almost unanimously on Tuesday that President Bush halt the shipment of oil to the country’s strategic petroleum reserve as long as oil prices remain high.

“Sticking oil underground is wrong at this point in time,” Senator Byron Dorgan, Democrat of North Dakota, said as he urged approval of a measure offered by Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader.

The Senate voted, 97 to 1, to tell President Bush to halt the shipments to the strategic reserve, the supply of just over 700 million barrels that is stored in salt caverns along the Gulf Coast. The reserve is meant to protect the United States against a disastrous sudden cutoff of oil supplies, like the Arab embargo of the 1970s.

The House was likely to vote Tuesday evening to approve its own measure to cut off shipments to the reserve. If the sentiment in the House mirrors that in the Senate, any veto of the measure by President Bush would be likely to be overridden. But the Senate measure is part of another bill, while the House version is a stand-alone item, so there are some procedural hurdles that must be overcome before the oil-cutoff move can emerge from the full Congress.

President Bush has argued that the 70,000 barrels a day now being added to the reserve is insignificant, compared with the country’s overall consumption of oil. On that point, even some supporters of Mr. Reid’s measure agreed. The United States consumes just under 21 million barrels of oil a day, according to the Energy Department.

Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico, the ranking Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, conceded that stopping the shipments to the reserve might be largely a symbolic step. Even so, he said, “this is one little thing we can do, and I think we should go ahead and do it.” ...

Anyone wanting to know .. Oil closed at $125.82 today .. I figure we will see $130 by EOT Friday. And by this rate .. in about 8 weeks we will most likely be at $200 .. IMHO. I pray I am wrong and it never goes that high .. or worse yet .. goes that high way quicker!

Is Obama Using Bush's Playbook?

Ideologically speaking, Barack Obama and George Bush could hardly be more different. Theirs is a dichotomy of Democratic big-government, dovish liberalism and Republican low-tax, free market, hawkish conservatism. But their personalities, when beliefs are removed, are not terribly different to the outside observer. Both shine in tightly-controlled, set-piece environments where the rules of engagement are based on their comfort-level. Although their speaking styles are clearly divergent, their charisma is a defining quality; turning arenas full of people into adoring fans with a turn-of-phrase, wink or thumbs up.

Despite their personal magnetism, though, they are also both clearly uncomfortable in more dynamic situations. Barack Obama in front of a teleprompter and well-screened crowd is a far different candidate than the Barack Obama dealing with Charlie Gibson asking pointed questions during a debate. Obama's reaction to that particular event also points to another trait he shares with the White House's current occupant: Neither reacts well to criticism from quarters they believe unworthy to bestow it. Additionally, Obama's infrequent media availabilities and rare trips to the press cabin of his campaign plane tell us we should expect the same type of minimalist dealings with the fourth estate under a President Obama as we have had under President Bush.

And last, but certainly not least, there is the money. In 2000, George Bush shattered previous fundraising records and took people's breath away. Subsequently, Barack Obama raised a staggering $50 million in March of this year alone. Flush bank accounts make small problems seem insignificant and big problems manageable. An abundance of ready cash also allows a campaign to test programs and theories early in an effort thereby avoiding the waste of resources on marginally successful efforts. However, Obama's use of small-donors is a stark contrast to the Bush Ranger/Pioneer program that revolutionized 'bundling' and made huge chunks of cash suddenly available.

As presidential candidates, Barack Obama and George Bush hold radically divergent world-views. But their campaigns reflect their personalities and vice-versa. They share large, well-funded, well-organized organizations that a relentlessly on-message and make few major mistakes. While Barack Obama publicly disavows almost all of what George Bush stands for, it's clear that when it comes to politics, he's willing to learn something from the other side of the aisle.

Blunt Federal Letters Tell Students They’re Security Threats

WASHINGTON — A German graduate student in oceanography at M.I.T. applied to the Transportation Security Administration for a new ID card allowing him to work around ships and docks.

What the student, Wilken-Jon von Appen, received in return was a letter that not only turned him down but added an ominous warning from John M. Busch, a security administration official: “I have determined that you pose a security threat.”

Similar letters have gone to 5,000 applicants across the country who have at least initially been turned down for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, an ID card meant to guard against acts of terrorism, agency officials said Monday.

That blatant twisting of Obama's comments about Israel was based on an interview with the senator by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, who weighs in on the controversy today.

Goldberg writes that "Mr. Boehner, I'm sure, is a terribly busy man, with many burdensome responsibilities, so I have to assume that he simply didn't have time to read the entire Obama interview, or even the entire paragraph, or even a single clause. If he had, of course, he would have seen that Obama was clearly calling the Middle East conflict, and not Israel, a sore. Why, there's no one who would disagree that the Middle East conflict is a 'sore,' is there?

"I have no doubt that Mr. Boehner will issue a correction to his press release in which he states the obvious, which is that Obama expressed -- in twelve different ways -- his support for Israel to me.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States condemned Zimbabwe's government on Tuesday for its "harassment" of the U.S. ambassador and other diplomats questioned by police after visiting post-election violence victims at a hospital.

of burning laminate flooring...I swear every muscle in my body hurts...even the fat hurts...up and down, on the knees, down the stairs, up the stairs, my fingers are cut, my hands are swollen, and we aren't quite done but almost....I am meeting with clients in my bedroom....I had a client who had to leave suddenly to take care of her sick mom so I am free, in a quiet empty house to blog for a minute...things were feeling rather strange on the blog in the last few days...I think I am trying to adjust to much less Sam...and the fucking ads on AM radio...the sammy cam is such a wonderful option..sniff, sniff...

A Wright-written panegyric eulogy for teacher, psychologist, and historian Asa Hilliard reveals more of the same bombastic, incendiary language that the Reverend is now famous for.

In the Dec. 2007 edition of the Trumpet magazine, which was founded in 1982 by Barack Obama’s church, Trinity United Church of Christ, and has Wright’s daughters serving as publisher and executive editor, Wright wrote: “(Jesus’) enemies had their opinion about Him… The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans.”

In the article, which seemingly mysteriously cannot be located, Wright writes that Jesus’ crucifixion was “a public lynching Italian style” that was wrought in “Apartheid Rome.”

He then critiques America by claiming that “the government runs everything from the White House to the schoolhouse, from the Capitol to the Klan, white supremacy is clearly in charge, but Asa, like Jesus, refused to be defined by an oppressive government because Asa got his identity from an Omnipotent God.”

This current revelation comes on the heels of another revealing 2007 issue of Trumpet Magazine in which Obama’s mentor and tight friend, Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., heaps praise and adulation on none other than anti-Semite, racist Louis Farrakhan, head of the Nation of Islam.

Farrakhan, who was inspired by Malcolm X, said in a March 11, 1984 speech broadcast on a Chicago radio station that “the Jews don’t like Farrakhan, so they call me Hitler. Well, that’s a good name. Hitler was a very great man.”

Farrakhan was promptly unanimously censured by the United States Senate for the speech.

Farrakhan has also referred to Jews, Palestinian Arabs, Koreans, and Vietnamese collectively as “bloodsuckers” while maintaining that “murder and lying comes easy for white people.”

Apparently, Obama didn’t mind at that time that his church and pastor, through the magazine, gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to Farrakhan, whom it said was a man that “truly epitomized greatness.”

“When Minister Louis Farrakhan speaks, America listens…For his commitment to truth, education and leadership, we honor Minister Louis Farrakhan with the Rev. Jeremiah W. Wright Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award,” Wright said in the article. “His depth on analysis [sic] when it comes to the racial ills of this nation is astounding and eye-opening. He brings a perspective that is helpful and honest.”

“His love for Africa and African-American people has made him an unforgettable force, a catalyst for change, and a religious leader who is sincere about his faith and his purpose,” Wright said.

Wright’s comments ran in a video, which was played when Trumpet bestowed the award.

But let’s not jump to conclusions about Farrakhan with only snippets of his thousands of words spoken over two decades. Let’s see what “truth” the man really stood for.

Another senior Rajasthan police officer, A.K. Jain, said 60 people were killed and 150 wounded.

I've got a Nissan

My second one. The first my ass of a husband gave me in the divorce instead of the Buick we bought together.

I get great mileage with my Nissan though. Close to 30 miles a gal. so I'm not complaining. The only thing with Nissans is their AC isn't made well. Had problems with both cars with the AC.

Gave it .. GAVE IT .. to the guy I married and he destroyed the car .. then sold it to some kid who finished the job. : (

But the 200SX had Nissan listed on the left side of the ass .. then Datsun 200SX on the right side of the ass. I loved damn car .. first and probably only "sports car" I will ever own.

After seeing this treatise by Michelle regarding her thoughts on race, I'm going to run with it now and go on record as predicting a loss of epic proportions for Barack if he's the nominee for the democrats to be president, because the 2 of them will not be acceptable to many white, Latino, Asian, etc., democrats. He will, however, get a majority of democrat votes, just not enough to gain a majority of all votes. I can't wait for the questioning of Michelle to start as to how much or how little she continues to believe about race relations in this country. It should be quite interesting in terms of how she's going to triangulate her responses to appear acceptable to white democrats and unenrolled voters.

Sarah Bailey, press secretary for Betty Ireland, West Virginia's Secretary of State, told RAW STORY that "West Virginia historically has had problems – specifically, vote buying. We've worked hard to update our voting system and most of our counties now use optical scan paper ballots or electronic voting machines with paper trail verification."

According to a poll commissioned by The State Journal, 69 percent of registered voters in West Virginia believe vote buying happens either "very often" or "somewhat often" and about seven out of ten West Virginians feel corruption happens in political races.

In an attempt to stave off criticism of voter fraud allegations, which have plagued West Virginia in the past, Secretary of State Ireland was asked by a metronews reporter if she feared following in the footsteps of notorious Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris. "We do not want to see Betty Ireland live on Fox, CNN, you name it... we don't want to be there," laughed Ireland.

Ireland's predecessor, Ken Hechler, had been the focus of several investigations over widespread charges of voting fraud - including vote buying and lost ballots - throughout his tenure as Secretary of State.

More than a century after the industrial revolution's coal mines and steel works turned Wales' lush green valleys into stark black hills, the strong winds that batter its coastline are playing a major part in the local government's plan to turn the country green again.

By 2025, Wales wants to generate all its electricity from renewable sources and even become a net exporter of power.

Wales is betting that two huge projects _ a $30 billion tidal barrage in the Severn Estuary and the largest biomass plant in the world in Port Talbot _ will produce most of the electricity needed to reach its 2025 target.

For the rest, the local government is hoping that its natural winds, streamlined bureaucracy, access to skilled labor, proximity to universities and state funding will prove enticing to companies in both the renewables and clean technology sectors.

"You don't need me to tell you that 47 million Americans are uninsured, and it's not news to you that medical costs are increasing faster than the rate of inflation, or that more Americans than ever are afraid a single major illness could bankrupt them," says Moyers. "It's little wonder that when the Gallup poll asked people on the eve of this election year to name the most important thing that can be done to cope with health care, 63% mentioned universal coverage."

Moyers reports that nurses are now among those at the forefront of the battle for affordable health care for all Americans.

The report cites the high quality, condition-free medical insurance enjoyed by the likes of Vice President Dick Cheney, who, despite four major heart attacks and other serious coronary issues, "can't be denied health insurance no matter how serious his heart condition is" because he is a U.S. government employee.

The California Nurses Association (CNA) criticizes such "Cadillac healthcare" favoritism and contrasts it to the limited options afforded to the majority of Americans. The CNA has launched an ad campaign saying that "if Cheney were just a regular American, he'd probably be dead by now."

The CNA's executive director rues the "double standard," saying, "There should be an excellence in care that applies to all people. We, as the public, pay for Dick Cheney's care. ... Why is the government not providing the same type of care to all Americans?"

Senators threaten Saudi arms deal over oil prices

A group of Democratic Senators Tuesday threatened to block a multi-million dollar US arms deal with Saudi Arabia, unless the kingdom ups oil production and helps cut soaring gasoline prices.

The Senators introduced a resolution of disapproval on the arms sale, as President George W. Bush prepared to head for Saudi Arabia, partly on a mission to contain runaway oil prices.

"We are saying to the Saudis that, if you don't help us, why should we be helping you?" said New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer.

"We are saying that we need real relief, and we need it quickly. You need our arms, but we need you to cooperate and not strangle American consumers."

The resolution, expected to be fast-tracked to the Senate floor, would prohibit the mammoth arms sale unless Saudi Arabia agrees to increase oil production by one million barrels per day.

Schumer said such an increase could bring down the price of a gallon of gasoline at the pump by 50 to 75 cents.

"We're losing our wealth. Our economy is heading south. That is the highest priority, not the Saudis getting the top-notch weapons," Schumer said.

The United States offered last year to sell Saudi Arabia and Gulf states a 20 billion dollar arms package, as part of a wider regional program aimed at deterring Iran and Syria, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda.

The resolution specifically mentions a sale of 900 kits to Saudi Arabia, which turn conventional bombs into laser-guided explosives or Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM).

Schumer said a motion of disapproval needed only 51 votes in the 100 seat Senate to pass and could not be filibustered.

Bush was heading to the Middle East on Tuesday, for a tour which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the formal establishment of US-Saudi relations.

The White House has said he will stress US concerns about soaring oil prices when he meets King Abdullah on May 16, and is expected to press the Saudis to boost their oil production as a way of curbing spiraling fuel prices.

AS WEST VIRGINIA GOES. . .?

It sounds like Hillary Clinton is on her way to winning the West Virginia primary by something approaching a 30 percentage point margin. As I've said before, the fact that voters in a given Democratic primary favor Clinton over Obama doesn't mean that many of them will favor McCain over Obama; nor should we assume that Clinton voters who say they'll vote for McCain will actually follow through.

Nonetheless, the margin in the West Virginia primary suggests real resistance to Obama among Democrats in that state. Now, Obama doesn't need to win West Virginia in November any more than he needs to win Kentucky, where he's scheduled to be trounced next week. But there are many Democratic voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania who fit the West Virginia and/or Kentucky profile. Obama may need to do reasonably well with such voters to carry these two crucial states.

Democratic superdelegates probably believe the risk that Obama won't do well enough with white rural and working class voters to win in Pennsylvania and Ohio is smaller than the risk that a great many black voters will stay at home if the Democrats nominate Clinton. These superdelegates may be right. But that doesn't mean the risk associated with nominating Obama isn't quite real.

The two of them took off, but Icarus became entranced with flight and, ignoring his father's warnings, flew higher and higher until the wax melted and Icarus plunged to his death in the sea.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright made two mistakes, only one of which deserves criticism. The first mistake was that of playing "Icarus." Throwing all sense of tactics aside, Rev. Wright became enchanted, if not entranced, by the publicity he received. Clearly angry about his perception of having been "dissed" by Senator Obama, this was his time in the Sun, so to speak. As demonstrated by his performance at the National Press Club, his speech was compelling, but his approach in the Q&A failed to take account his circumstances: he was not in his own church; indeed, he was not in any church. Clearly, by the time of the Q&A, Rev. Wright was in the stratosphere, inspired, perhaps by both the sound of his own voice and the "Amens" he received from supporters in the room. Yet, the responses he should have paid attention to were those of the journalists, most of whom were apparently not part of his Amen Corner. Since then, he has been plunging into the sea. The problem is that many people believe that he is taking Senator Obama with him. I happen to not agree, for reasons I will present below.

The second "mistake," however, was very different. Rev. Wright has, throughout his career, dared to challenge the myth of US history. For the larger society this "mistake" is of far greater importance than his performance at the National Press Club, and for that matter, whether or not he brings down Senator Obama, US history has a basic narrative: The settlers were heroes; the indigenous people were either heathens or naive primitives, but in either case they were in the way of progress. Slavery was an unfortunate episode that was cleaned up by the Civil War, though it has never been quite clear that the former slaves were ever meant to rule themselves, let alone anyone else. US foreign policy has generally been benign, nearly always driven by either a God-given imperative to improve the world or our sense that the planet would be better off with our version of capitalism and democracy. Where Rev. Wright fell into problems was by challenging this myth. Taking the standpoint of those who have seen the underside of the "American Dream", he was prepared to speak to a counter-narrative that identifies the problematic nature of US history. By doing so he opened himself to ridicule, but only when his counter-narrative was treated in sound-bites rather than taken as a whole.

For this reason the attack on Rev. Wright must be examined very carefully because there are multiple agendas unfolding. The larger problem is that the Obama campaign was treated to a media onslaught that was completely inappropriate to the circumstances. Rev. Wright never spoke for the Obama campaign and on that basis alone, Senator Obama would have been well within his rights to simply stop responding to questions. Certainly both Senators McCain and Clinton have done that when they have been caught in uncomfortable situations. There was no reason that Obama should have been expected to handle it differently. Well, there was a reason that has something to do with his coloring.

It is in this sense that progressives generally, but especially those supporting the Obama candidacy (even if critically supporting it, as is this writer) should remind people that it is not Rev. Wright pulling the campaign down but instead it is the media that tastes blood and is trying to promote an atmosphere of pessimism. Needless to say both the Clinton and McCain campaigns (and their allies) have been complicit in this.

It is also important to emphasize that the Wright/Obama conflict is largely about a means for the mainstream political establishment to situate Senator Obama with those to his Left. To the extent to which Rev. Wright played into this, it was possible, if not essential, in the view of the Obama campaign, to distance itself not only from Rev. Wright but from Wright's message. In this way the message was being trounced along with the messenger. No real discussion is being permitted about the issues that Rev. Wright raised because he is being treated as an out-of-control old man and his message is being treated as incoherent at best, anti-American at worst. Insofar as Rev. Wright's message was maligned as crazy and inappropriate ANYONE conveying that message was also so categorized. Certainly by ignoring tactics and focusing more on proving his own dignity and correctness, Rev. Wright lost control over the situation. His own anger and desire for rehabilitation of his reputation outweighed any sense of the current political situation. This was a major mistake and one that many people will have difficulty forgiving. This is unfortunate.

Rev. Wright should be criticized for abandoning tactics and putting himself before the movement. He should not, however, be criticized for challenging the myths associated with US history. Even if one disagrees with aspects of what he relayed - such as his take on the origin of AIDS - much, if not most of his argument is backed up by a genuine examination of the foundations of the USA and its current role domestically and internationally. Space to make that argument is essential. And we, to the Left of Senator Obama, must continue to advance an accurate sense of the history and role of the USA. This will put us at odds, at times, with the Obama campaign which either cannot or will not agree with such an analysis. Yet if there is a significant constituency that does, this argument will gain attention, if not traction.

"Critical support" means walking on two legs, both offering genuine support, as well as offering sincere and constructive criticism where there are disagreements. Rev. Wright apparently decided that now was a time for lashing out in hurt and anger, rather than recognizing that the sweetest "revenge" is success. For those of us to the Left of Senator Obama, success is more than the election of Senator Obama as president of the USA. It is really about the building of a social movement that embraces much of the counter-narrative Rev. Wright attempted to articulate. With that counter- narrative, we have the basis for a left/progressive strategy. Without that counter-narrative, we are simply wandering in the wilderness, hoping for change.

The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.

In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Funes says that such a notion "doesn't contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures.

The interview was headlined "The extraterrestrial is my brother." Funes said that ruling out the existence of aliens would be like "putting limits" on God's creative freedom:

Last week, I did a complete rundown of the incredibly sordid case of Ohio Attorney General Mark Dann (D). Democrats, though united in their desire for Dann to resign, had not quite arrived at impeachment as the solution. As one lawmaker put it, it wasn't clear if Dann's transgressions had gone beyond "being stupid."

Well, with Dann continuing to refuse to step down, Democrats have united on impeachment as the solution. This morning, they filed articles of impeachment in Ohio's House, with 42 of the 45 Dems supporting the nine counts.

It is possible that intelligent life exists on other planets besides earth. Jesuit director of the Vatican observatory, Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, said this in an interview in the Vatican’s newspaper ‘Osservatore Romano‘.

Their existence would not contradict Catholic faith, according to Funes. After all, these aliens would still be part of God’s creation.

In the interview, Funes also talks about the theory of the Big Bang, and about creation and evolution.

Because most media only give us snippets of Fr. Funes’ answers, I have translated the parts of the interview about the Big Bang and about the possibility of extraterrestrial life:
