Fox host uses son to attack Obama

A Fox News host is now inviting his son on his show to attack Democratic presidential candidates. Peter Doocy received praise from his father, Steve Doocy, host of Fox & Friends when his son asked push-poll style questions aimed at Barack Obama.

“Morning to you, Pops!” said Peter Doocy, after his father introduced his son to his television audience to replay a series of push-poll questions Peter asked a group of students he had gathered at Villanova University campus in Radnor, Pennsylvania for a ‘youth view’ of the Democratic presidential race.

The 20-year-old Peter Doocy started out the session by asking benign questions; how many students had registered – most of them – and how many actually voted in the recent primary – only a few hands went up; how many would vote the same way their parents did or how many wouldn’t; and then got down to the real red meat of attacking Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama:

10 tough questions on oil and gas prices

By Joseph A. Davis
jdavis2@starpower.net

Q. If Congress and the candidates are serious about reducing U.S. dependency on foreign oil, why would they passively accept little or no growth in U.S. refining capacity at a time when world refining capacity is growing?

Q. What has come of the various Congressional investigations, or calls for investigations, into possible manipulation of the domestic motor fuel market?

Q. What are the prospects for the House-passed bill (H.R. 1252) setting stiff penalties for gasoline price-gouging? Why has the Senate Commerce Committee taken no action on it? What Senators are holding it up?

Q. What are the root causes of soaring oil and gasoline prices? What will candidates and Congress do to address them?

Q. Why has U.S. refinery capacity not grown more and more quickly?

Q. What is the financial strategy that causes oil companies not to invest more in refinery capacity at a time when they are flush with profits and demand exceeds supply and is growing? How much, precisely, is industry currently investing in new or increased refinery capacity? What do stockholders think of this?

Q. How is the price of domestic wholesale and retail gasoline actually set? Is it really a free, open, and competitive market? Does the diminishing number of companies in the market – and the ownership of distribution and retail outlets by the refining companies – offer opportunity for anti-competitive practices?

Q. What is the credibility of industry claims that refiners are worried that demand for gasoline may drop disastrously as a result of the government push for more ethanol use? How does this square with historical demand growth and the current market signal of strongly and persistently rising prices?

Q. What is the credibility of the Federal Trade Commission's 2006 report [also click here] finding no manipulation or collusion among refiners in restricting supply or setting prices. Are those findings consistent with findings in the FTC's 2001 investigation?

Q. Has the Justice Department investigated the possibility of anti-competitive practices in the domestic motor fuel industry? What were the results? Did then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in 2006 shut down a Justice Department investigation sought by state Attorneys General?

The price of gasoline at the pump is climbing steadily toward $4.00, the summer driving season is likely to make things worse, and some political leaders have again begun trying to convince the voters that they have solutions.

It may be a hard sell. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll done in April showed that voters were more worried about paying for gasoline (44%) than about getting a good-paying job (29%) or paying their rent or mortgage (19%). The survey of 2,003 U.S. adults was conducted April 3-13.

Gasoline prices are an issue, and probably a growing one, in the 2008 presidential and Congressional campaigns. John McCain and Hillary Clinton are pushing for a summer moratorium on the federal gasoline excise tax, while Barack Obama dismisses the idea as a "gimmick." President Bush says there is no "magic wand" he can wave, but in the same breath says the answer is to drill the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- and blames the Democrats for not letting him do it.

Prime minister

Lador, who spoke to reporters at a press conference at the Jerusalem District Court, commented on the hearing held in the court over the state's request to question a foreign national over the affair.

Earlier Tuesday, the court allowed the publication of the fact that a request has been made for a foreign national's preliminary testimony in connection to the probe into Olmert.

This decision came after a sweeping gag order was placed Friday over details of the case.

Some members of the foreign press have decided to disclose details of the investigation.

Nigeria oil rebels say mulling Obama truce appeal
Sun May 4, 2008 5:22pm BST

LAGOS (Reuters) - Rebels who have stepped up attacks on Nigeria's oil industry in the last month said on Sunday they were considering a ceasefire appeal by U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has launched five attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta since it resumed a campaign of violence in April, forcing Royal Dutch Shell to shut more than 164,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).

"The MEND command is seriously considering a temporary ceasefire appeal by Senator Barack Obama. Obama is someone we respect and hold in high esteem," the militant group said in an e-mailed statement.

MEND did not say when or where Obama, the leading candidate for the Democratic ticket for November's U.S. presidential election, made the appeal. It said it hoped the government would use any ceasefire to improve conditions for its detained leader, Henry Okah.

The militant group also claimed responsibility for an attack on Shell facilities in southern Bayelsa state on Saturday, which caused a spill and prompted the company to shut some production.

The attack came a day after a federal court ruled that Okah should be tried for treason and gun-running in secret. Angered by the ruling, MEND had threatened prompt reprisals against the oil industry.

Peace talks between the government and militants to resolve the unrest in the Delta stalled after Okah was arrested in Angola in September. He was extradited to Nigeria in February to face trial.

The volatile Niger Delta is the heart of Nigeria's oil industry, which exports around 2.0 million barrels per day (bpd), but energy multinationals have been struggling to cope with a wave of violence in the vast wasteland.

As part of a campaign for greater local control over oil revenues, MEND launched violent attacks in early 2006 which shut a fifth of Nigerian output and drove up world oil prices.

The latest wave of attacks and an eight-day strike by senior oil workers at U.S. energy giant Exxon Mobil which ended on Thursday, had slashed Nigeria's output by 50 percent, helping to push oil prices to new records.

Democrats Set to Defy Bush on War Bill
By Carl Hulse
The New York Times

Tuesday 06 May 2008

Washington - Defying President Bush, House Democrats are preparing to forge ahead with a war spending measure that would include extended unemployment assistance and new educational benefits for returning veterans.

After a meeting Monday evening of House Democratic leaders, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she hoped to bring a $178 billion measure to the floor this week. What could be a contentious debate on the matter is likely to be held on Thursday, aides said.

Ms. Pelosi, of California, did not disclose details of the proposed bill, which will be presented to rank-and-file Democrats at a closed party session on Tuesday. But Democratic officials, who did not want to be identified since the bill was still being put into final form, said the legislative package would include provisions requiring a significant withdrawal of troops from Iraq by December 2009 and measures that would force Iraq to share more costs of its reconstruction.

Democrats also intend to make veterans eligible for new educational assistance if they have served from three months to three years or more on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001. The aid would be equivalent to a four-year scholarship at a public university for those with three years or more service, with payments prorated for those with less time.

Mr. Bush has steadily insisted he would not approve any legislation that exceeds his spending request for the war, sets any withdrawal deadlines or adds domestic money he opposes like the unemployment benefits. And House Republicans, angry that the measure is not going through formal committee consideration, began on Monday to open procedural attacks on the House floor in protest, forcing extra votes on noncontroversial measures.

Clinton: OPEC 'can no longer

Clinton: OPEC 'can no longer be a cartel'

Clinton's attacks on oil prices as artificially inflated, Enron-style, keep escalating, and today she appeared to threaten to break up the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"We’re going to go right at OPEC," she said. "They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide how much oil they’re going to produce and what price they’re going to put it at," she told a crowd at a firehouse in Merrillville, IN.

"That’s not a market. That’s a monopoly," she said, saying she'd use anti-trust law and the World Trade Organization to take on OPEC.

Clinton has cast herself as a warrior for working people against the oil industry and malicious "speculators," and made that -- along with her push for a gas tax holiday -- central to her closing message in Indiana.

It's a potent message, like the attack on "Wall Street money brokers," with deep roots in American politics. It' It's also very hard to figure out what exactly she means by the threat to break OPEC.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign points out that Clinton has not signed on to cosponsor a bill that aspires "to make oil-producing and exporting cartels illegal."

UPDATE: Clinton's campaign says she voted a version of the bill in 2007 and has long favored filing a WTO complaint against OPEC.

Clintonistas delude

Clintonistas delude themselves that their candidate has been fully vetted, whereas Mr Obama is only now coming under scrutiny. This is an error. Mr Obama is not probing the many scandals of her past, because his campaign is positioned to be above all that. And Mr McCain is not doing it either – not yet – because he expects to be facing Mr Obama in November. If Mrs Clinton were nominated, you can bet that the scandals of the 1990s and before would be dusted down and freshened up.

This points to the largest issue for Democrats to bear in mind. In US politics, Mrs Clinton is a uniquely divisive figure. To be sure, division is her element – as one can see, she relishes the fight – and a little of that in a politician is a good thing. But nothing could energise wavering Republicans to turn out for Mr McCain, or de-energise Mr Obama’s bright-eyed new Democrats, so thoroughly as the living prospect of another Clinton presidency. My guess is that she, not Mr Obama, would be the bigger gamble.

I'll tell ya Dan...

I'm from the Portland area, so a good train system is a must.

NOT like Chicago has, three separate systems fighting for riders.

The CTA, the Elevated, and the obviously French-inspired 'Metra' are all individual systems. Separate tickets are required for each.

And personally, I don't like a bus system where there's never a place to sit except for the old people who seem to live there. (On the bus)

According to the sleeping attendants behind the ticket windows on the Metra line, two times during the day, you can't find a seat on the train...rush hours for commuters. The rest of the day, its a transit ghost town. No one uses it. Only leaves once a hour sometimes.

Still have yet to try the CTA trains; haven't seen one yet. We're on the far east side of town. Lakeshore Drive.

The humidity is oppresive!

thank you for that, now i know never to visit Chicago...i have it right here

Mercy for Animals Uncovers MORE HEN ABUSE

Video is disturbing

Gemperle Farms is a major supplier of eggs to national chains like Safeway and Albertsons, raking in $7.3 million in annual sales.

Steve Gemperle, president of Gemperle Farms, serves as an alternate board member of the AEB (American Egg Board) and is the diector of the UEP (United Egg Producers).

VIDEO: http://www.my58.com/video/16170839/index.html

...
At Gemperle, he documented the standard battery cage operation and the way that 95 percent of eggs in this country are produced.

"It is impossible to have any degree of decent animal welfare at all in a battery cage operation," said the activist.

From the moment the laying hens arrive at the farm, the treatment is rough as workers push racks of hens onto the loading dock. It is what's called the population process -- workers stuff up to eight hens into a single cage.

"It was very common because we had to work at a furious pace. It was very common for the birds' necks or wings to get caught in the wire of the cages and a lot of the workers would just keep shoving or hitting the bird to try and push them in as fast as possible," said the activist.

As a result, many of the hens had broken wings or legs, but they weren't treated by a veterinarian. For the next two years, a small cage is their home, and they can't even spread their wings.

The battery cage takes its toll.

"When you have birds that have been there for two years, they look like absolute hell, they're missing most of their feathers, their covered in wounds. You see a lot fewer birds per cage because so many of them had died off," said the activist.

When the laying hens are worn out, workers push a kill cart down the row. They yank the hens from their cages and gas them with carbon dioxide.

The activist also caught a manager on video not doing an effective job of wringing one hen's neck. The bird was still alive minutes later.

He saw a worker stomping another hen.

"As he's stomping on her, she's reacting to him stomping by trying to struggle and keeps flapping her wings and there were manure pits below those individual cages that were filled up with water, so he kicks her underneath an egg belt and she drowns in the manure water," said the activist.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The owner of Tropicana casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, nearly five months after New Jersey regulators stripped the Tropicana Casino and Resort of its license.

Tropicana Entertainment LLC said Monday it plans to continue operating its remaining properties throughout the country, including the famed Tropicana Casino and Resort on the Las Vegas strip, and will keep current staffing levels.

The company was buffeted by a chain of events that began Dec. 12 when the New Jersey Casino Control Commission determined that the company was incapable of running the "first-class operation" required by state law and stripped the Tropicana in Atlantic City of its casino license after less than a year.

Juan Cole: Clinton's Iran Comments "Monstrous"

I had complained at the time that this diction is monstrous. I mean, it is surreal to have Democrats discussing whether it is appropriate for the US to "totally obliterate" another country. It would be one thing if she had threatened the Iranian military. Targeting civilians, who would be included in the "total" obliteration, is a war crime.

Clinton stood by her remarks: "I don't think it's time to equivocate. [Iran has] to know they would face massive retaliation. That is the only way to rein them in." The premise that "they" only understand the language of massive violence is in fact a rightwing premise more characteristic of W. and Ariel Sharon than of the Democratic Party tradition.

Freesat is available to 98% of homes, including those that are unable to receive Freeview through a TV aerial.

It will carry 80 digital TV and radio channels, including free high definition programmes, with that number due to rise to 200 by the end of 2008.

Users will make a one-off payment for a dish, set-top box and installation, but will not pay a monthly subscription.

I prefer subways and light-rail systems. Dublin, Ireland, for example, uses primarily existing tracks to run people into town with big regular locomotives.

Noisy, smelly, and slow. But it's still better than the amount of automobiles it's taking off the roads. Especially on an island.

Operation Mockingbird

The Subversion Of The Free Press By The CIA

"You could get a journalist cheaper than a good call girl, for a couple hundred dollars a month." - CIA operative discussing with Philip Graham, editor Washington Post, on the availability and prices of journalists willing to peddle CIA propaganda and cover stories. "Katherine The Great," by Deborah Davis (New York: Sheridan Square Press, 1991)

The Alex Constantine Article
Tales from the Crypt
The Depraved Spies and Moguls
of the CIA's Operation MOCKINGBIRD

by Alex Constantine

Excerpt

In 1952, at MCA, Actors' Guild president Ronald Reagan - a screen idol recruited by MOCKINGBIRD's Crusade for Freedom to raise funds for the resettlement of Nazis in the U.S., according to Loftus - signed a secret waiver of the conflict-of-interest rule with the mob-controlled studio, in effect granting it a labor monopoly on early television programming. In exchange, MCA made Reagan a part owner. Furthermore, historian C. Vann Woodward, writing in the New York Times, in 1987, reported that Reagan had "fed the names of suspect people in his organization to the FBI secretly and regularly enough to be assigned 'an nformer's code number, T-10.' His FBI file indicates intense collaboration with producers to 'purge' the industry of subversives."

No one ever turned a suspicious eye on Walter Cronkite, a former intelligence officer and in the immediate postwar period UPI's Moscow correspondent. Cronkite was lured to CBS by Operation MOCKINGBIRD's Phil Graham, according to Deborah Davis.

Another television conglomerate, Cap Cities, rose like a horror-film simian from CIA and Mafia heroin operations. Among other organized-crime Republicans, Thomas Dewey and his neighbor Lowell Thomas threw in to launch the infamous Resorts International, the corporate front for Lansky's branch of the federally-sponsored mob family and the corporate precursor to Cap Cities. Another of the investors was James Crosby, a Cap Cities executive who donated $100,000 to Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign. This was the year that Resorts bought into Atlantic City casino interests. Police in New jersey attempted, with no success, to spike the issuance of a gambling license to the company, citing Mafia ties. In 1954, this same circle of investors, all Catholics, founded the broadcasting company notorious for overt propagandizing and general
spookiness. The company's chief counsel was OSS veteran William Casey, ho clung to his shares by concealing them in a blind trust even after he was appointed CIA director by Ronald Reagan in 1981.

"Black radio" was the phrase CIA critic David Wise coined in The Invisible Government to describe the agency's intertwining interests in the emergence of the transistor radio with the entrepreneurs who took to the waves "Daily, East and West beam hundreds of propaganda broadcasts at each other in an unrelenting babble of competition for the minds of their listeners. The low-price transistor
has given the hidden war a new importance," enthused one foreign correspondent.

To configure RealPlayer to receive content via UDP:

1. In RealPlayer, click the Tools menu and choose Preferences. The Preferences box opens.
2. In the Category pane under Connection, click Network Transports.
3. Select the Use specific UDP ports check box, and type the port number to use for RealPlayer traffic. You can enter multiple ports by separating each entry with a comma and a space (for example: 7070, 8080). Your firewall administrator will need to provide you with the UDP port numbers.
4. Click OK to save your changes.

Applegate's mother, Margaret, died in 1981 of breast cancer when Jodi was only 17. When she passed away, a family secret was supposed to have gone with her.

Fox Anchor Jodi Applegate Set To Announce Shocking Family Secret ON AIR

"In late 1963, she found herself pregnant and not married, which was a real scandal in those days, especially if you were Irish-Catholic," says Applegate, especially in Wheeling, W. Va.

"She hid her pregnancy, disappeared for several months and returned with a baby she said she'd gotten at an orphanage.

"She said, 'I'm going to keep her and adopt her' . . . It was a story that allowed her to live in that town and go to that church."

Applegate grew up believing she was adopted. Eventually, her mother married, but never had any more children.

Fannie Mae Reports $2.2B Loss in First Quarter

Fannie Mae, a key source of mortgage funding, today reported that falling home prices and rising defaults contributed to further losses for the government-sponsored company during the first quarter.

The company said it lost $2.2 billion ($2.57 per share) in the three months that ended March 31, compared with a gain of $961 million (85 cents) in the comparable period a year earlier. Measured in relation to Fannie Mae's total mortgage guarantees, credit losses rose by 55.6 percent during the first quarter compared with the last quarter of 2007.

The loss came as a sign of further trouble in the mortgage and credit industries. This morning, Swiss bank UBS reported an $11 billion quarterly loss and said it will cut 5,500 jobs, many of which will come from the bank's investment division.

Cheney to campaign in north Miss. for GOP candidate

JACKSON, Miss. --
Vice President Dick Cheney will appear in heavily Republican DeSoto County next week to campaign for the GOP's Greg Davis the day before a special election to fill an open congressional seat.

Davis faces Democrat Travis Childers in a May 13 runoff in the 1st District, which stretches across 24 counties in northern Mississippi.

"The vice president intends on working hard this cycle to return a Republican majority to Congress," Cheney spokesman Jamie Hennigan said Monday in confirming his boss' May 12 appearance.

Of course, in the true charitable spirit of the Bush Family--remember how Barbara checked-in on the displaced Katrina victims in the Houston stadium, the libraries and schools devastated by Katrina benefiting by Laura's and bro-in-law Neil's contributions, and King George sending the hurricane-ridden Gulf Coast a horse racing attorney to save the day albeit several days later--wants to help Myanmar.

I am more electable because I am white. Barack Obama--Wow!--he's certainly inspired a lot of hope, but as voters in Indiana and North Carolina make up their minds, as the superdelegates make up their minds, they should remember that Barack Obama is black. FBI raids offices of Special Counsel Scott Bloch: repor

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided the U.S. Office of Special Counsel in Washington, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday on its Web site. The newspaper reported FBI agents with grand jury subpoenas seized computers and documents belonging to agency head Scott Bloch and staff. Searches involved alleged obstruction of justice by Bloch during a 2006 inquiry into his conduct, the Journal reported. In June 2003, President Bush nominated Scott Bloch for the position of Special Counsel and in January 2004 he was sworn in to a five-year term.
