Right now, soldiers on the go have to shout to each other, or flash hand signals, to communicate. Pentagon researchers have an idea for a different way to connect: tapping one another on the shoulder, from up to 300 feet away.

Anybody who's grabbed a buzzing cell phone knows a little something about haptics -- the science of communicating through the sense of touch. The brains at DARPA figure those vibrations might be a good way for troops to share info, across noisy urban battlefields.

The idea behind this "Tactical Telehaptic Communication" program is to place "electrotactile or vibrotactile arrays... near or on the soldier’s skin" -- and then buzz the G.I. in the appropriate place, to convey a message. A quick pulse on the belly could mean stop; a zap on the shoulder could mean go. The signals would be sent from a haptic glove, up to 100 yards away.

Ten things you should never give your pet

Did you know there are things that you should never feed your cat or dog? This useful article, written by Dr. Karen Halligan is essential reading for all cat and dog owners.

"Having worked in emergency for numerous years, I have seen pets given all kinds of foods and drinks. An easy rule of thumb, if it isn't particularly healthy for you, it most likely is not good for your cat or dog. Some pets will eat almost anything, so pet owners need to be careful or they could end up in the local emergency room. The following are ten bad things to give your pets.

1. Make no bones about it -- bones are bad for animals! Every year countless numbers of animals end up in the emergency room from being given bones by their owners, usually as a treat.

The fact is that dogs are omnivores, not carnivores and most dogs and cats cannot tolerate bones. They can splinter or lodge in the intestinal tract with disastrous results, usually requiring surgery. They can also get stuck in their mouth or throat, which is just as dangerous. All bones are bad, including pork, chicken and beef. The next time you feel the urge to give your dog a bone, just make sure it's a milk bone or a nylabone. Your pet will love you for it.

2. Chocolate can be lethal to pets because it contains theobromine, which causes increased heart rate, central nervous system stimulation and constriction of arteries. Clinical symptoms range from vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and excitability to cardiac failure, seizures and death. This can occur as quickly as four to six hours after ingestion. Baking chocolate is the worst because it contains the highest amount of theobromine.

A potential lethal dose is only one pound of chocolate in a 16-pound dog. If your pet has gotten into chocolate you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

3. Alcohol is also very bad for cats and dogs. It doesn't take much alcohol to intoxicate a pet. Animals will stagger and bump into things, hurting themselves, and it also causes them to urinate uncontrollably.

In high doses, alcohol will suppress the central nervous, respiratory and cardiac systems and can lead to death. It is best to just give your pet water.

4. Milk is also not good for animals because many of them are lactose intolerant and will develop diarrhea. Pets often lack the enzyme that is required to break down the sugar in milk and this can cause them to develop vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Even though they like it, especially cats, refrain from giving your pets milk.

5. Ham and other salty meats and foods are very dangerous to pets. In addition to being high in fat, they are also very salty which can cause serious stomach ache or pancreatitis. Also, large breeds of dogs that eat salty food may drink too much water and develop a life-threatening condition called "bloat." This is where the stomach fills up with gas and within several hours may twist, causing the pet to die. Please avoid giving ham and salty foods to your pets.

6. Onions are toxic to pets. They contain allyl propyl disulfide, which damages their red blood cells and can cause fatal consequences in animals. They may become anemic, weak and have trouble breathing. The best thing to do if your pet ingests onions is to get them to the vet right away.

7. Caffeine is also bad for pets. It contains methylated xanthine that, like chocolate, stimulates the central nervous and cardiac systems and within several hours can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitations and even death. So make sure your pets stay away from that early morning brew.

8. Avocados are also bad for pets. First, they are really high in fat and can cause stomach upset, vomiting and even pancreatitis. Second, the pit is also toxic and can get lodged in the intestinal tract leading to a severe blockage, which may require surgery.

9. It may come as a surprise to many that tuna fish is bad for cats. The feline heart muscle requires an amino acid called taurine to maintain normal strength and function. Regular tuna fish for humans does not have this amino acid and cats that eat too much tuna fish will develop heart problems. If you want to give your cats that taste of tuna that they love, just make sure it is tuna fish for cats which has this amino acid added.

10. The latest study has found that raisins and grapes can lead to kidney failure in pets. Small dogs can also choke on grapes so it is best to just make sure that your pets eat a well-balanced diet that is formulated for their life stage.

I really like the new series, but I am more impressed with what they've done with the Dr Who `franchise'...The original Dr. Who was made for children, the new one is meant to be viewable for everyone. The Torchwood series (sort of a spin-off) is more adult in its content, same sex love between some of the main characters...and they have a new one, the `Sarah Jane Adventures', whose target audience is children.

So, they have a series for all age groups.

Umm..well..honestly...it hasn't been so much fun for a while in my opinion..

I still have the same problem I've always had with you. You want anonymous posting and porn posting here, but when you started an alternate blog, you shut down open posting repeatedly. Me and Toni and maybe some other folks opened up the alternate blog and you immediately shut us down. Then you killed that blog entirely. Talk about "no fun"!

My problem with Lucille, it was like the same problem I have had with Shell. Breaking - Zimbabwe opposition wins election recount

The vote recount has been released and they confirmed the initial results. Whether Mugabe will respect the results is another question.
For the first time in 28 years, the opposition had wrested a parliamentary majority from President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF in March 29 polls, triggering a recount of 23 out of 210 constituencies.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said 14 out of the 23 seats had been recounted so far, and the original result was confirmed in all of them.

Qwest Communications International Inc. on Thursday introduced DSL plans with faster download speeds, including one that is the fastest DSL service from a major U.S. phone company.

Qwest is charging $104.99 per month for a download speed of 20 megabits per second. For 12 mbps, it is charging $51.99 per month. The prices are $5 lower when combined with local phone service.
Compare this "great" offer to what I just signed in France, which we all know hates choice and hates the free market, according to the GOP. For €53 per month I receive a 100 mbps internet connection plus phone calls throughout Europe and North America plus TV channels. In local terms for local buyers one euro is one dollar but even with the terrible exchange rate this is a steal compared to the business friendly market in the US. The Republicans only care about giving business everything they want, always at the expense of consumers. It's hard to believe the GOP could do so much damage to the previously competitive US market.

2) It seemed to me that OTHERS were not liking the anonymous freedoms here

3) I made the mrr blog be for registered invited users to fulfill the desire it seemed that the majority of people wanted but didn't have here...

4) One day the mrr site went down and out went the invites to be a member of the blogspot. Once again, to fulfill what it seemed most people EXCEPT ME wanted here.

5) Cicero didn't want or Someone..? (Honestly it was so fucking long ago I don't remember now and each of the two times now I have to recount it for you I could have a different recollection), didn't want to register so you or toni decided to open it up - because if you recall I gave everyone the same rights there -. Finally (I don't recall when or how much after that) I decided to delete the blogspot that I created and Sir Real took it over after that.

Speaking of rosemary..in a surprise twist from my co workers someone laid out some natural recipes..one being rosemary essential oil on the scalp to promote hair growth..I have a lot of that oil and not much to do with it since it scares me in a way...I read that rosemary essential oil shouldnt be used around pregnant women....

You are freaking me out!

My show runs continuously, starting over every 3 hours. I try to post the schedule on the shows webpage and I'm trying to always make it start at 7,10,1,4 am and pm. This week I had issues getting it started and it's running at 8,11,2,5 am and pm. The goal is to get it started at 7 so peeps can jump in after Sam's done on Sunday.

Just starting on the new show now so I'll be gone most of today. Suggestions always welcome here.

Thanks to pbtrue1, the theme for this week's show is "Where is everybody...for God's sake!?!?!?". She gave me the idea with her fact based conspiracy post and I thought it tied in neatly with what Helen Thomas said. She also, unwittingly, contributed a segment with an excellent opinion piece she wrote to me as a personal message. (Sorry babe, what's mine is mine! ;-)

to refrain from holding a view..this of course is incredibly difficult. When we refrain from view we do not have a need for things to be this way or that way...they just are the way they are...Here on the blog where I am a newcomer I see lots of push and pull which leads to hurt feelings and anger.

Lately this blog has reminded me of Lord of the Flies...it seems that it is devolving into picking many nits and some blog/violence of sorts. As I think about how I have been feeling myself lately, I have been very frustrated bordering on scared about the state of our world affairs. When I look at the blog, I see that this sense of nervousness and frustration is being expressed here...we are an outpicturing of what is happening all around us.

Buddhism suggests that all anger and malice needs to be transformed to love and compassion. I think you are all fine and interesting people and we are all flawed. I hope this gets worked out because this has been a source of a feeling of community for me and now I feel it might be time to go...

Humans have ego's(edge god out) which are the source of much suffering. When the ego gets inflated from view, attachment and aversion, then trouble begins and suffering is caused. When egos are deflated and bridled, then compassion arises...

Hope this all gets worked out...I miss all the fun goofiness and great information.

More than 70 top Clinton donors wrote their first checks to Obama in March, campaign records show. Clinton's lead among superdelegates, a collection of almost 800 party leaders and elected officials, has slipped from 106 in December to 23 now, according to an Associated Press tally.

There are signs that the anger voiced by some African Americans is beginning to extend to the Democratic donor base. Campaign finance records released this week show that a growing number of Clinton's early supporters migrated to Obama in March, after he achieved 11 straight victories. Of those who had previously made maximum contributions to Clinton, 73 wrote their first checks to Obama in March. The reverse was not true: Of those who had made large contributions to Obama last year, none wrote checks to Clinton in March.

"I think she is destroying the Democratic Party," said New York lawyer Daniel Berger, who had backed Clinton with the maximum allowable donation of $2,300. "That there's no way for her to win this election except by destroying , I just don't like it. So in my own little way, I'm trying to send her a message."

The message came in the form of a $2,300 contribution to Obama.

The Obama converts include William Louis-Dreyfus. The billionaire New York financier said he had been impressed by Clinton's performance in the Senate and distressed by eight years of the Bush administration when he donated the maximum to her campaign last August. Then, he said, he began watching more closely.

"However much one might have supported the Clintons, or one might support the usual suspects in the Democratic Party, I began to believe Obama represents a new approach. He gives off such a sense of relevance that he's sort of irresistible," Louis-Dreyfus said.

He also expressed, as did other big givers who crossed to Obama, exasperation about the tone of the Clinton campaign and frustration with the candidate herself.

"At the end of the day, all she had to do was open her mouth for me not to believe her," Louis-Dreyfus said.

A long time ago in a land far away, there was a fella by the name of Terry Wilke who was totally enamored of a gal named Janeane. He was especially taken with the way she pronounced an epithet for the southern who-ha crowd. He was overjoyed every time Janeane said "cracker." Well, there were a lot of us who liked Terry and liked Janeane, and someone came up with the stupid idea that we should change all our nics and encourage Sam and Janeane to acknowledge us by saying "cracker." The short version is, Sam and Janeane mostly ignored us until the last minute of the show when Sam told Janeane trust me, just say cracker. She did, but we realized that they really didn't give a rat's patootie and we didn't really care whether or not they did and that's the way things are, amen. But there was a cracker night when we tried to get Sam and Janeane to be geeky and Janeane wasn't reading the blog, and Sam was, but he didn't want to seem like a person who could be swayed by his blog to do something silly, and things have just been screwy ever after. That's what I think anyway, but I'm old and my memory isn't great ;)

Maybe I should stay in hibernation/stfu mode.

NOW? What an inappropriate use of the word NOW. The article's title should read G.O.P. Now Admit Unashamed of Their Bigotry. Does anyone think that the entire world doesn't know that people who openly self identify with the G.O.P. are either fundamentalists, or bigots or both? They are the first to cling to their church they use to forgive their bigotry. They are the first to divide people. They are always first to troll for the most ignorant to fool them to their whim.

Does anyone believe that whether Hillary or Obama is their opponent that they won't use the same base tactics? What I don't understand is why people are so hesitant to call them what they really are - stupid and fascist.

The fact is that all of my life the Republican party has held a value of holding the racist vote. That is the Southern Strategy. It is a core value they are proud of. Both parties have wielded religion as a weapon but none so openly to divide people as the G.O.P. The Bible and Koran and Book of latter day Saints and all that is hog swill to me because it is the fountain of perpetual rebirth of bigotry in its purest form. Any of you are welcome to worship that (edited out of decorum) if you want but it's not for me.

You can call it a generalization if you want, and that is true. It is NOT however a mistake to recognize the obvious. The peril is ignoring the fact and being surprised every time they act in the same predictable fashion.

Grouping people on common values is precisely what party affiliation is. That isn't conjecture. That is my history of how these parties work. The Democratic party has been the party of civil rights since the 60's. John Adams' wife, I believe, was the birth of defining what people are. She was against slavery imo and he was the foundation of much of the core Republican values and reluctantly endorsed it. I don't just know that because of HBO. I specified in my lifetime, not as a historical truth.

And discussing this NOW is much more important than ignoring the dirty 500 pound pig rooting around in the kitchen. It gets sloppy.

you are correct. The Democratic party has it's own sins. I'm not trying to write something to offend. I am describing what I see. I see one party very defined by tolerance and another defined by segregation. All of us have prejudice but what are we doing about it?

My description sounds harsh (bigots and fundamentalists). Is there a more polite or accepted way and still describe what I see? I also believe religion is a tool that is used to exploit and give Raison d'être for racially divisive beliefs.

Yes, this is fascinating, however, the author is WRONG about Hillary's religious activities and the Sixth Article of Constitution (regarding a 'religious test')! I'll explain on the other side of the excerpt...
