It's all pretty simple.......

If you want to live in the 19th Century vote for McCain ...

If you want to live in the 20th Century vote for Clinton ....

If you want to live in the 21st Century vote for Obama.

Company of Iraqi troops abandons position after attack

AP

A company of government troops in Sadr City retreated when they came under attack from Shiite militiamen who used the cover of a sandstorm, police said Friday.

The clashes overnight killed two people and injured nine, a police commander said. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to release the information, said it was unclear whether there were any casualties among the soldiers.

The reports of the latest setback for the Iraqi army come after government officials acknowledged that during fighting last month against Shiite militias in the southern city of Basra, more than 1,300 Iraqi soldiers and police deserted or refused to fight.

The police officer said militiamen belonging to the Mahdi Army of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr launched their attack shortly before midnight on army positions in Sadr City, a sprawling slum area of some 2.5 million people in eastern Baghdad.

These Iraqi troops are US trained and armed going against from what the US says Iranian trained troops... guess we know who trains better

In the end, Obama will win the nomination...

The only question is how much damage Hillary will do before and at the convention.

Next Tuesday will tell us a great deal.

I would like to see Hillary win by about 12%!

That would give her enough encouragement to fight on.

Pockyclips

I remember a cartoon in the New Yorker about 20 years ago that said it best.

The cartoon is of an old homeless man dressed in rags, standing on a corner and looking quite the apocalyptic profit holding a sign that read:

The end is not coming Sammy, the NeoCons only made us wish it were.

New Madrid Earthquake

New Madrid Earthquake Preparation Poses Unique Challenges

Three earthquakes centered near the Missouri Bootheel town of New Madrid struck the region over a two-month period in 1811 and 1812 with thousands of aftershocks. They are the best known of the New Madrid quakes. These earthquakes along the New Madrid fault were so powerful, there are accounts of the Mississippi River temporarily flowing backward and church bells ringing in Boston.

Emergency responders, government and economic development officials from 17 states came to St. Louis, Missouri November 2, 2006 to discuss preparations if a major quake along the fault happens again. The two-day conference was held by the Delta Regional Authority, an economic development agency working in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Participants are encouraged to examine their own communities for hazards, develop partnerships and focus on reducing risks and improving response capabilities.

Planning for earthquakes is different from many other disasters because there could be no warning with an earthquake and the potential of a large geographic area that could be affected. If a major New Madrid earthquake begins, an area including Memphis, Tennessee, St. Louis and hundreds of rural communities could be affected. The executive director of the Central United States Earthquake Consortium said a major New Madrid quake could destroy buildings, bridges, roads and other infrastructure, disrupt communications and isolate areas. Obama’s strange defense of William Ayers

posted at 8:34 am on April 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama has decided to push back against criticisms of his association with former Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers, but the arguments he offers sound less than convincing. Rather than chalk it up to political naivete and issue a non-apology apology, Obama has decided to argue that he can’t be expected to consider the actions of people that took place in his childhood, and that Ayers only was bad for a few days.

TRASHY WTC SECURITY
HOMELESS GUY FINDS KEY PLAN IN A CAN

It's a good thing Osama wasn't walking through SoHo yesterday morning.

Two sets of confidential blueprints for the planned Freedom Tower, which is set to rise at Ground Zero, were carelessly dumped in a city garbage can on the corner of West Houston and Sullivan streets, The Post has learned.

PHOTO GALLERY: WTC Blueprints Found In Trash

Experts said the detailed, floor-by-floor schematics contain enough detail for terrorists to plot a devastating attack.

"Secure Document - Confidential," warns the title page on each of the two copies of the 150-page schematic that a homeless, recovering drug addict discovered in the public trash can.

I think we can trust to folks to keep sending 97%ers to Congress.

My county here in Illinois

is really starting to liven up. The Repubs, that have owned this county for ever are getting competition from Dems and Greens. They haven't had competition so they don't know how to hadle it. Heh! Fun to watch them spinning right now.

The Green Party is really growing in this area. There are at least 2 from my progressive group that are running for county offices in the fall.

Nice to see the change happening. It's even creeping into the surrounding counties, like the county where Hastert was from. Shows people are sick of the do nothing repubs.

Lorenz attractor

[ re - Cat Chew Fri, 04/18/2008 - 3:29am ]
Edward Norton Lorenz -- May 23, 1917 -- April 16, 2008

nyt As recounted in the book “Chaos” by James Gleick, Dr. Lorenz’s accidental discovery of chaos came in the winter of 1961.

== Unlike Gleick, I do not think of the discovery as accidental. I would say that the strange attractor that led to Dr. Lorenz’s discovery was the as yet undefined nature of Chaos Theory. The strange attraction that the notion of a strange attractor was exerting on Lorenz's thinking.
I am aware of a strange attractor that keeps us traveling around this blog. ==

Lorenz attractor wiki

A plot of the trajectory Lorenz system
for values ρ=28, σ = 10, β = 8/3

The Lorenz attractor is a 3-dimensional structure corresponding to the long-term behavior of a chaotic flow, noted for its butterfly shape. The map shows how the state of a dynamical system (the three variables of a three-dimensional system) evolves over time in a complex, non-repeating pattern.

The attractor itself, and the equations from which it is derived, were introduced by Edward Lorenz in 1963, who derived it from the simplified equations of convection rolls arising in the equations of the atmosphere.

From a technical standpoint, the system is nonlinear, three-dimensional and deterministic. In 2001 it was proven by Warwick Tucker that for a certain set of parameters the system exhibits chaotic behavior and displays what is today called a strange attractor. The strange attractor in this case is a fractal of Hausdorff dimension between 2 and 3. Grassberger (1983) has estimated the Hausdorff dimension to be 2.06 ± 0.01 and the correlation dimension to be 2.05 ± 0.01.

The system arises in lasers, dynamos, and specific waterwheels [1].

The equations that govern the Lorenz attractor are:

{dx}/{dt} = sigma (y - x)

{dy}/{dt} = x (rho - z) - y

{dz}/{dt} = xy - beta z

where σ [SIGMA] is called the Prandtl number and ρ [RHO] is called the Rayleigh number. All σ, ρ, β > 0, but usually σ = 10, β = 8/3 and ρ is varied. The system exhibits chaotic behavior for ρ = 28 but displays knotted periodic orbits for other values of ρ. For example, with ρ = 99.96 it becomes a T(3,2) torus

Even WITHOUT a lapel pin!

Apr 18, 8:42 AM (ET)

By CHARLES BABINGTON and TREVOR TOMPSON

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton are both sustaining dents and dings from their lengthy presidential fight. The former first lady is clearly suffering more as Democratic voters no longer see her as the party's strongest contender for the White House.

Voters of all types have gotten a better sense of Obama, who was an obscure Illinois legislator just four years ago. As more people moved from the "I don't know him" category in an AP-Yahoo News poll, more rated Obama as inexperienced, unethical and dishonest. And 15 percent erroneously think he's a Muslim, thanks in part to disinformation widely spread on the Internet.

But Obama's positive ratings have climbed as well, while Clinton - widely known since the early 1990s - has been less able to change people's views of her. And when those views have shifted, it has hurt her more than helped.

The New York senator's ratings for being honest, likable, ethical and refreshing have fallen since January, and Obama scores higher than she does in all those categories.

In a dramatic reversal, the AP-Yahoo News poll found that a clear majority of Democratic voters now say Obama has the better chance of defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in November.

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos can continue to defend his decision to lead off his debate with an hour's worth of questions that mined the electoral sideshow (Lapel Pins, Tuzla, Weather Underground) for material at the expense of informative questions that cut to the needs of real Americans, but the facts are these: Back when the shoe was on the other foot, and Stephanopoulos' job was that of a campaign insider, he insisted that the media hold itself to a higher standard, as this clip from The War Room demonstrates.

Across Globe, Empty Bellies Bring Rising Anger

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Hunger bashed in the front gate of Haiti’s presidential palace. Hunger poured onto the streets, burning tires and taking on soldiers and the police. Hunger sent the country’s prime minister packing.

Haiti’s hunger, that burn in the belly that so many here feel, has become fiercer than ever in recent days as global food prices spiral out of reach, spiking as much as 45 percent since the end of 2006 and turning Haitian staples like beans, corn and rice into closely guarded treasures.

Saint Louis Meriska’s children ate two spoonfuls of rice apiece as their only meal recently and then went without any food the following day. His eyes downcast, his own stomach empty, the unemployed father said forlornly, “They look at me and say, ‘Papa, I’m hungry,’ and I have to look away. It’s humiliating and it makes you angry.”

That anger is palpable across the globe. The food crisis is not only being felt among the poor but is also eroding the gains of the working and middle classes, sowing volatile levels of discontent and putting new pressures on fragile governments.

In Cairo, the military is being put to work baking bread as rising food prices threaten to become the spark that ignites wider anger at a repressive government. In Burkina Faso and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa, food riots are breaking out as never before. In reasonably prosperous Malaysia, the ruling coalition was nearly ousted by voters who cited food and fuel price increases as their main concerns.

“It’s the worst crisis of its kind in more than 30 years,” said Jeffrey D. Sachs, the economist and special adviser to the United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon. “It’s a big deal and it’s obviously threatening a lot of governments. There are a number of governments on the ropes, and I think there’s more political fallout to come.”

Voters Have Spoken: Don't Insult Our Intelligence

The 3% isn't the story - they are soooooo Predictable..!!!

Blogtalk: Bloggers Turn Up Heat on ABC
-------------------
Au contraire, Spin Breath. You are far more predictable. I could write your posts in my sleep...or in a coma.

While researching the response to the recent debate, I avoided blog-generated opinion entirely because I wanted to know the opinions being published by traditional media across the nation.

It is my assessment that an overwhelming majority of voters and journalists are disgusted with the trite questions posed to both candidates.

By far, the largest portion of the majority is aghast that an important opportunity was trivialized. The remaining portion of the majority is comprised of Obama supporters who share the "wasted opportunity" opinion but place it secondary to a perceived attempt to resuscitate petty negative attacks directed at their candidate.

It stands to reason that the blogs communities would have majorities that reflect the opinions expressed in traditional media publications.

Because the majority opinion has been spread in publications as widely as the debate itself, my research has ended: Opinions formed after the initial backlash are tainted by the influence of the backlash.

My conclusion is that most voters no longer care about blowjobs and lapel pins and spoken gaffes. They have been screwed (and continue to be screwed) by the Cheney/Bush administration's failed policies. They find death and a trashed economy and the harm done by Conservatism's unwillingness to regulate the powerful elements of capitalism to be issues far more important to their lives and their future than tabloid gossip.

Of course, there will continue to be voters who focus their self-righteous judgementalism on issues like Bill Clinton's blowjob while practicing cognitive dissonance on the similar moral issue of McCain's shift from one wife to the next.

Their ranks have diminished, though. When your IRA has lost 30% of its value or you have lost your job or your soldier son is dead, blowjobs lose their gossipy appeal.

Your drugs must have kicked in!!!

well well well

If the Democratic presidential race were a poker game, by now you'd have to suspect that Barack Obama's campaign is dealing from the bottom of the deck: Rarely a day goes by when it doesn't slap another ace down on the table. The aces in this (possibly strained) metaphor are endorsements, and it often seems as if the Obama operation has an inexhaustible supply at its disposal. In the past week alone, it has announced the support of congressmen from North Carolina and Indiana; the Utah state party chair; the Oklahoma state party's chief fundraiser; 25 South Dakota state legislators; the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers; and, not least, The Boss. Some of these endorsers are super-delegates, and thus of no small consequence to the outcome of the race. Others are simply window-dressing, deployed to create a sense of ineluctable momentum in Obama's direction. But none have the particular resonance of the endorsement that's coming — unbeknownst to the campaign — a little later today.

The endorsement in question is that of Robert Reich, Bill Clinton's first Secretary of Labor and a friend of both the former president and his wife for four decades. Around 1:00pm EST, Reich informs me, he intends formally to declare his support for Obama on his blog.

Bush to appoint new HUD secretary.
The AP reports that President Bush plans to name Steven Preston as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, replacing the disgraced Alphonso Jackson. Preston comes to HUD from chief of the Small Business Administration (SBA). When he was appointed to SBA, Preston had no “experience running a small business,” previously serving as a senior vice president of ServiceMaster, a “multibillion-dollar corporation.” BusinessWeek reported in April 2006:

As executive vice-president, strategic services of Illinois-based ServiceMaster, which operates popular home service brands such as Merry Maids, Terminix, and TruGreen ChemLawn, Preston oversees the company’s long-term planning and technology systems, among other areas.

The nominee has also likely strengthened his ties to the Bush Administration during his time there. A self-described “committed Republican,” Preston worked at ServiceMaster while Claire Buchan, currently the chief of staff for Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, was a vice-president for communications at the company. […]

[H]is resume shows he has no experience as an entrepreneur and comes from a company with a reputation as a bully among some small-business owners.

Preston is known as a “Bush loyalist.”

Look at the percentage who approve the war Iraq and BushCo's policies. THE WHOLE DAMNED COUNTRY has changed their mind. You still see yourself within that 97% bubble, but the whole bubble has moved left, and will continue to do so.

A Chinese cargo ship believed to be carrying 77 tonnes of small arms, including more than 3m rounds of ammunition, AK47 assault rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades, has docked in the South African port of Durban for transportation of the weapons to Zimbabwe, the South African government confirmed yesterday. It claimed it was powerless to intervene as long as the ship's papers were in order.

Copies of the documentation for the Chinese ship, the An Yue Jiang, show that the weapons were sent from Beijing to the ministry of defence in Harare. Headed "Dangerous goods description and container packing certificate", the document was issued on April 1, three days after Zimbabwe's election. It lists the consignment as including 3.5m rounds of ammunition for AK47 assault rifles and for small arms, 1,500 40mm rockets, 2,500 mortar shells of 60mm and 81mm calibre, as well as 93 cases of mortar tubes.

The carrier is listed as the Cosco shipping company in China.

South Africa's national conventional arms control committee issued a permit on Monday for the trans-shipment of the cargo from Durban to Harare. The head of government information in South Africa, Themba Maseko, said yesterday: "We are not in a position to act unilaterally and interfere in a trade deal between two countries." South Africa had to "tread very carefully", given the complexity of the situation in Zimbabwe, Maseko said.

Just wanted to comment on Joe Scarborough and his decision to opt out of debating Rachel. It is hilarious to me because if he hadn't walked away they would have called it a "knock out". Joe has been unable to elevate his debate skills to take on Rachel. So, he has tried attacking her or lowering his voice and slowing his speech to sound like he was saying something important and appearing wise. Of course, the alternative for him would be to do homework and work hard. But, he ain't gonna do that. He was hoping Rachel would be deferential to him like Mika. Wrong! I have some issues with Rachel on her radio show. But, on tv it is so great to see her take on those nit wit men.

Jimmy Carter is taking the lead on this. I hope he lives to a thousand.
Most folks don't recall that he shamed 'slick Willy' Clinton into the treaty with North Korea. Clinton was pulling the same crap as the Shrub. He refused to talk to them. Carter brokered the treaty on his own, and dumped it in the administration's lap. Things were fine until Incurious George unilaterally dumped the treaty, beginning the conflict all over again.

Can you smell Obama's fear - The 3% can and want to Help!

Dear MoveOn member,

If you missed the Democratic presidential debate on ABC last night, Editor & Publisher called it "perhaps the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate in years."1

Moderators George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson spent the first 50 minutes obsessed with distractions that only political insiders care about — verbal gaffes, polling numbers, the stale Rev. Wright story, and the old-news Bosnia story. And, channeling Karl Rove, they directed a video question to Barack Obama asking if he loves the American flag or not. Seriously.

Enough is enough. The public needs the media to stop hurting the national dialogue in this important election year. Can you sign the petition to ABC and other media outlets and pass it on to friends who are also fed up? Click here for our must-see video with excerpts from last night — and to sign the petition:

http://pol.moveon.org/enoughdistractions/

The petition says: "Debate moderators abuse the public trust every time they ask trivial questions about gaffes and 'gotchas' that only political insiders care about. Enough with the distractions — ABC and other networks must focus on issues that affect people's daily lives."

We'll deliver petition signatures to ABC and the networks hosting future debates. And if we reach 100,000 signatures, we'll reprint the petition in an ad campaign targeting the networks on this issue.

ABC's natural inclination will be to ignore their critics, so we need to go above and beyond to show them that the public is truly outraged. So, please, think about some friends who may be fed up with 2008 media coverage and forward them this email. If thousands of us do that, it'll make a huge difference.

The reaction to last night's debate has been very consistent:

"A stinker, an absolute car crash — thanks to the host network ABC … [It] ran the gamut from banal to inane. At the end of the debate members of the crowd appeared to be booing moderator Charlie Gibson." — The Guardian's Richard Adams2

"Halfway through the debate, not a single question on any policy issue had been asked." — OpenLeft.com's Chris Bowers3

"For the first 52 minutes … Gibson and Stephanopoulos dwelled entirely on specious and gossipy trivia that already has been hashed and rehashed, in the hope of getting the candidates to claw at one another over disputes that are no longer news. Some were barely news to begin with." — Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales.4

"We've revisited bitter. We've gone back to Bosnia. We've dragged Rev. Wright back up onto the podium. We've mis-spent this debate by allowing Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos to ask questions that skirt what in my mind is what we need to know now." — Philadelphia Inquirer's Daniel Rubin5

Shame on ABC for letting voters down with last night's abysmal debate. Bad debates aren't just painful to watch — they actually hurt the country by distracting voters and politicians away from big issues of the day.

Please send a message to ABC and other media outlets that we need our national dialogue to focus on the real issues facing Americans. Click here to sign the petition:

Thanks for all you do.

Flip flopping away.....

Rove’s Lawyer Backtracks On Testimony Promise, Hints Rove Will Hide Behind Executive Privilege
On April 7, Karl Rove’s attorney Robert Luskin reportedly promised to MSNBC that, if subpoenaed, his client would testify in the case of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who went to jail for corruption charges and now says Rove may have played a role in pushing a political prosecution. MSNBC’s Dan Abrams reported:

ABRAMS: We asked this question to his attorney: Will Karl Rove agree to testify if Congress issues a subpoena to him as part of an investigation into the Siegelman case? The answer we got — “Sure.”

Watch it:

Yesterday, House Judiciary Committee chairman John Conyers (D-MI), joined by members Linda Sánchez (D-CA), Artur Davis (D-AL), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), wrote to Rove and requested that he testify before the committee about the politicization of the Justice Department, including the prosecution of Siegelman.

But now Luskin is saying that Rove won’t testify unless the White House says he can, claiming that MSNBC took his comments “out of context.” Roll Call reports:

MSNBC provided Roll Call with an e-mail exchange with Luskin that the network broadcast in which a producer asked, “Will Karl Rove agree to testify if Congress issues a subpoena to him as part of an investigation into the Siegelman case?”

“Sure,” wrote Luskin, according to the e-mail. “Although it seems to me that the question is somewhat offensive. It assumes he has something to hide.”

But in an interview with Roll Call, Luskin said that his MSNBC comments were taken out of context.

“Whether, when and about what a former White House official will testify … is not for me or my client to decide,” but is part of an ongoing negotiation between the White House and Congress over executive privilege issues, Luskin said.

Rove has previously fought congressional efforts to force him to testify in the U.S. attorney scandal through the invocation of executive privilege by the White House.

As I said, some just refuse.....

Obama has had a media microscope up his ass for the last 4 months. Both Hillary and McCain are hitting him with everything they've got and he is still steadily gaining in the polls.

Every single time McCain is left unattended he opens his mouth he says something stupid, and the media hasn't even started on him yet. Once he gets into the spot light of the general election this will become an everyday occurrence. Do the math. Obama isn't just going to win, he is going to win HUGE.

Also, if you think the Republicans aren't going to take the hit for the economy and the 97%ers embarrassment for supporting Bush you are drunk or dreaming.

The pattern is right there in front of you, but you won't see it. It is showing up in everything. Scarbouroughs reaction to Rachel is part of that pattern. The right is collapsing. But explain how Obama's numbers really haven't changed much within the margin of error in about every poll out there, Dawg? Why does he keep even, or even gain ground in some polls when the other idiots like you keep rehashing it?

Hmmmmmm. Maybe because, like the booers and hecklers of ABC's dynamic duo, real Americans are sick of this tripe shit.

But, you go ahead and worry your little self silly over one black reverend's comments. You go ahead and worry your little self silly over flag lapels pins made in China. Some damage done. Just on the local news.

I'll get more later and post.

Public's View of Economy Takes Fast Turn Downward

The public's ratings of the national economy continue to sour, with assessments deteriorating faster than at any point in Washington Post-ABC News polling. Views on the Iraq war have also turned more negative, with six in 10 now rejecting the notion that the United States needs to win there to effectively battle terrorism.

The economy and the Iraq war are the top two issues on voters' minds, according to the new Post-ABC poll, and worsening opinions of both may dampen GOP hopes for the November elections.

Nine in 10 Americans now give the economy a negative rating, with a majority saying it is in "poor" shape, the most to say so in more than 15 years. And the sense that things are bad has spread swiftly. The percentage who hold a negative view of the economy is up 33 points over the past year, and the percentage who rate the economy "poor" has increased 13 points in the past two months. That is the quickest 60-day decline since The Post and ABC started asking the question, in 1985.

Views of the Iraq war have dipped as well. Now, more than six in 10 say that the conflict is not integral to the success of U.S. anti-terrorism efforts. That is the most people to reject what is one of the Bush administration's central contentions and a core part of presumed GOP presidential nominee John McCain's stand on the issue.

Moreover, while Bush remains committed to keeping more than 100,000 U.S. troops in Iraq through the rest of his presidency, 56 percent of Americans say the United States should withdraw its military forces to avoid further casualties. This has been the majority view since January 2007.

On several measures, the poll finds Republicans inching away from support for the war. Among them, a sense that progress in Iraq has stalled has increased 13 points from early March, and the percentages who prefer withdrawing troops over risking more casualties (30 percent) and who think that the battle against terrorism can be a success without victory in Iraq (39 percent) are each at new highs.

Uh oh. What's a Bush lackey to do!

If your education were one-tenth of Jimmy Carter's education, you would know the meaning of "half-life."

The Wright flap hit the news on March 13th. Today marks thirty-six days hence. Three weeks was the stated half-life. The Wright canard has diminished to less than one-fourth of its initial impact and Obama continues to increase in popularity.

My estimate was too conservative. The half-life has proved to be closer to two weeks than three.

There are many differences between you and myself. One of them is that you make statements but refuse to revisit them...like your relentless posting of photographs of Hillary Clinton with headers similar to "Salute your next Commander-In-Chief."

Just checked it out:

"The granddaddy of them all (eastern and midwestern state earthquakes" was the 1811-1812 series of three great quakes on the New Madrid Fault (halfway between St. Louis and Memphis beneath the Mississippi), which shook the entire United States. The next time the New Madrid Fault produces such a quake, it is estimated 60 percent of Memphis will be devastated, leaving $50 Billion in damage and thousands of dead in its wake. Ongoing nomination fight

Ongoing nomination fight hurting Clinton more than Obama
By CHARLES BABINGTON and TREVOR TOMPSON, Associated Press Writers
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a dramatic reversal, an Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll found that a clear majority of Democratic voters now say Sen. Barack Obama has a better chance of defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in November than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

While Obama and Clinton are both sustaining dents and dings from their lengthy presidential fight, the former first lady is clearly suffering more. Democratic voters no longer see her as the party's strongest contender for the White House.

Voters of all types have gotten a better sense of Obama, who was an obscure Illinois legislator just four years ago. As more people moved from the "I don't know him" category in the AP-Yahoo! News poll, more rated Obama as inexperienced, unethical and dishonest. And 15 percent erroneously think he's a Muslim, thanks in part to disinformation widely spread on the Internet.

But Obama's positive ratings have climbed as well, while Clinton — widely known since the early 1990s — has been less able to change people's views of her. And when those views have shifted, it has hurt her more than helped.

The New York senator's ratings for being honest, likable, ethical and refreshing have fallen since January, and Obama scores higher than she does in all those categories.

the last new madrid quake gave us a new lake

Reelfoot Lake

Popular history says that the lake was formed when the region subsided after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–1812, and that the Mississippi River flowed backward for 10-24 hours to fill it. The observations of the few persons in the region at time confirm that something serious occurred in the Reelfoot area in conjunction with the earthquakes, and that it undoubtedly resulted in major changes in the landforms of the area (which are very changeable at any rate, as the area is comprised primarily of glacial loess).

E Street Band Member Danny Federici Dies

NEW YORK — Danny Federici, the longtime keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen whose stylish work helped define the E Street Band's sound on hits from "Hungry Heart" through "The Rising," died Thursday. He was 58.

Federici, who had battled melanoma for three years, died at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. News of his death was posted late Thursday on Springsteen's official Web site.

He last performed with Springsteen and the band last month, appearing during portions of a March 20 show in Indianapolis.

Specter: Mukasey Is 'Still Wearing His Robe'

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) today accused the Bush administration of being overly obstinate on a range of controversial issues, expressing particular frustration at Attorney General Michael Mukasey's unwillingness to compromise.

"Mukasey is non-negotiable," Specter said at a meeting with the Washington Post editorial board. "Mukasey is still wearing his robe."

Feisty and opinionated as ever despite a recent recurrence of Hodgkin's Disease, the top Judiciary Committee Republican was especially pointed on the subject of Mukasey and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, lamenting that the former federal judge refused to budge from the Bush administration's position that telecommunications companies must be granted retroactive immunity for their past cooperation with intelligence operations.

Echoing the complaint of many Democrats, Specter said, "I think retroactive immunity is exactly wrong. ... How can you ask for retroactive immunity in a context where you don't even know what you're immunizing?"

Let's retrieve a campaign promise from the memory hole.

Hey George: How's That Plan to Lower Gas Prices by Sucking Up to Oil Producers Working?

Hey, remember 2000? We had an election that year!

Let's recall then-candidate George W. Bush's pitch about how he'd lower gas prices, which at the time were averaging $1.66 per gallon. ...

He'd just build up a boatload of goodwill within the Arab world and then tell those rag-heads to open up the spigot!

When Bush made that oath to put the squeeze on his Saudi cousins, crude oil was trading at about $35 per barrel.

Skipping forward to the present, Reuters reports on a new poll that finds, "Eight out of 10 Arabs have an unfavorable view of the United States."

"The price of New York oil hit a record high 115.54 dollars per barrel on Thursday."

Average price of a gallon of gas today: $3.35

Delegates pressured for support

Virginia's six uncommitted superdelegates are facing new pressure from Democratic activists to back Barack Obama for president.

In a letter to the superdelegates, 40 party leaders from some of the largest localities express fear that the fight between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton is weakening the party and only helps John McCain, the probable Republican nominee.

"Where we're going is destructive," said Fairfax County Democratic Chairman Scott A. Surovell, who endorsed Obama after former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards quit the race.

In the letter, the county, city and congressional district chairmen urge the unpledged superdelegates to support Obama because primary outcomes -- including the Illinois senator's big win in Virginia in February -- augur his nomination.

He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,

solar power

The movement to convert San Diego schools to solar power has stalled — because it has led to a huge increase in energy costs. The San Diego Union Tribune reports electric bills went up $20,000 a year after solar energy systems were installed in 28 schools. So a plan to put solar in a total of 50 schools has run out of steam.

The administrator who runs the solar project for the Lemon Grove district says schools went solar not just to save money but to provide a lesson in planetary stewardship.

But one school board member says the unanticipated costs have taken money away from the classroom and put it into the hands of the utility companies.

School officials are hoping that an electricity rate change coming in May will work to their favor — but will not propose any more solar panel installations until they see what happens.

A 'Bitter' Misstep

Scandals come and go, and this election cycle has had its share of 24-hour news uproars. But every once in a while an event comes along that sticks, and in the process changes the political equation. Mr. Obama's description at a San Francisco fund-raiser of "bitter," small-town Americans who "cling" to their guns and their God is looking to be such a moment. Let us count the ways in which Mr. Obama might now be wishing he'd stuck to Internet fund raising:

- "Yes We Can" has devolved into "Who the Heck Is This Guy?" Mr. Obama's political brilliance to date has been to use his message of hope to deflect questions about himself or his record. He'd actually created the perception that to challenge him was to challenge "hope" itself. Think back to that soaring race speech, which so successfully turned the debate toward America's shared problem, and away from Mr. Obama's individual Jeremiah Wright problem. But the San Fran comments proved one scandal too many; man and message have now been delinked.

And so nearly the whole first hour of Wednesday's debate was devoted to Mr. Obama's gun-God comments, his wisdom in sticking with a rabid pastor, his links to 1960s radicals, even his patriotism. The candidate's frustration was visible, and he spent yesterday complaining the debate was the latest in "gotcha games" that take away from the "issues." Then again, among the important "issues" for many voters are a candidate's beliefs, character and judgment. Mr. Obama will just have to get used to it.

Hamas endorses Obama

Hamas endorsed Barack Obama for President on Sunday. Yesterday, after Hamas's endorsement was reported here and elsewhere, his campaign tried to distance Obama from the terrorist group:

"Senator Obama has repeatedly rejected and denounced the actions of Hamas, a terrorist organization responsible for the deaths of many innocents, that is dedicated to Israel's destruction," Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

Left unaddressed by the campaign was what it is about Obama's policies that makes his candidacy so attractive to a leading terrorist organization. Here is one obvious possibility: Iran controls Hamas. Obama has said that as President, he would meet one-on-one with Iranian leaders, without preconditions. Perhaps Hamas's endorsement reflects Iran's pleasure at the prospect of an American President with whom the mullahs can do business.

Earthquake swarm puzzles researchers
By Terry Dillman Of the News-Times

Unusual. Unique. Even weird.

That's how researchers at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) are describing a swarm of earthquakes they are monitoring off the central Oregon coast, about 150 nautical miles southwest of Newport. Since April 1, they have recorded more than 600 quakes in an area not known for a high level of seismic activity.

"We've never seen a swarm of earthquakes in an area such as this," said Robert Dziak, who is among the scientists from OSU using a network of underwater hydrophones to listen for the sounds of ocean floor earthquakes and other phenomena from their labs at HMSC. "We're not certain what it means."

A marine geologist and seismologist who works with both OSU and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, Dziak called the swarm "unique" because it's occurring in the middle of what's known as the Juan de Fuca plate, rather than at the edges where it rubs against other such plates in the earth's crust.

Woods Fund Could Become

Name of Radical
Raised in Debate

By CHRISTOPHER COOPER
April 18, 2008; Page A6

Sen. Hillary Clinton's reference to a Chicago charitable organization may have flown over the heads of viewers of Wednesday's Democratic debate. But many in Washington wonder whether the Woods Fund could be the "swift boat" of this campaign.

The Woods Charitable Fund of Chicago is a touchstone in the latest controversy swirling around Sen. Obama's past associations. In this case, the association is with William Ayers, a 1970s radical turned college professor, whose tenure as a director of the charity overlapped with Sen. Obama's for three years ending in 2001.

McCain endorsed by Al Qaeda

Well, not yet, but if history has any say... might as well expect it.

"Islamic fundamentalism" has consistently been used to support US foreign policy interests.

US military intervention in Afghanistan in the 1980s was supported by the Wahabi missionaries out of Saudi Arabia, which trained the Taliban ('graduates") in the US sponsored madrassas in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Wahabi doctrine would not have spread in the way it did without the support of US intelligence.

Since the 1980s, the CIA provided guerrilla training in Pakistan, which was integrated with the teachings of Islam.

Al Qaeda was a creation of US intelligence, which was put together with the support of Pakistani and Saudi intelligence:

"[I]t was the government of the United States who supported Pakistani dictator General Zia-ul Haq in creating thousands of religious schools from which the germs of Taliban emerged."

The "jihad", in this case, was put together on behalf of Washington to destabilize the secular Afghani government which was, at the time, supported by the Soviet Union. Saudi Arabia worked closely with Washington in recruiting the Mujahideen (holy warriors - think Osama Bin Laden) to fight against the Soviet Union. The Saudi monarchy enlisted the support of the religious authorities. Fatwas were issued; "urging Saudi and non-Saudi youths to go to Afghanistan and carry out jihad there.

Confirmed by the Afghan Project, which has collected hundreds of CIA and State Department documents, cables and memoranda, the CIA developed from the late 1970s, ties with a number of Islamic organizations. The objective was to use "Islamic fundamentalist" doctrine to unseat the secular pro-Soviet People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government as well as unleash a war with the Soviet Union. The same strategy of supporting Islamic political movements was used by Washington in the post-Cold War era in the Muslim republics of the former Soviet Union as well in Bosnia and Kosovo.

"What is the difference between jihad in Afghanistan and jihad in Iraq? What is the difference between the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and US occupation of Iraq?'

Blogger One Drop makes a spot-on observation:

Don't let all of the blathering about which candidates are "elitist" or "out of touch" distract you from the real significance of "Bittergate." The issue isn't really that Obama talked about people who "cling" to guns or religion. The issue is that he got too close to the real Third Rail of politics

Social Security is not the Third Rail, no matter what the media tells you. No, the Third Rail is economic class. Try talking about income disparity in America, what do you get? "You're engaging in class warfare!" The same cries of protest are sounded whenever one suggests that the Bush tax cuts were mostly aimed at the wealthy, or that doing away with the estate tax was only beneficial to something like the top 1% of Americans. No, we musn't talk about the working class or the middle class getting a raw deal economically. In other words, we musn't criticize the real elites in this country, namely the wealthy and the politically connected.

Absofuckinglutely. That's why Jim Webb gave the political class palpitations when he wrote this in the WSJ shortly after winning, when the idiot pundit class was still proclaiming him a "conservative" Democrat.

Pentagon institute calls Iraq war 'a major debacle'

Don't blame us, we told you so.

~-~-~

WASHINGTON — The war in Iraq has become "a major debacle" and the outcome "is in doubt" despite improvements in security from the buildup in U.S. forces, according to a highly critical study published Thursday by the Pentagon's premier military educational institute.

The report released by the National Defense University raises fresh doubts about President Bush's projections of a U.S. victory in Iraq just a week after Bush announced that he was suspending U.S. troop reductions.

The report carries considerable weight because it was written by Joseph Collins, a former senior Pentagon official, and was based in part on interviews with other former senior defense and intelligence officials who played roles in prewar preparations.

It was published by the university's National Institute for Strategic Studies, a Defense Department research center.

"Measured in blood and treasure, the war in Iraq has achieved the status of a major war and a major debacle," says the report's opening line.

At the time the report was written last fall, more than 4,000 U.S. and foreign troops, more than 7,500 Iraqi security forces and as many as 82,000 Iraqi civilians had been killed and tens of thousands of others wounded, while the cost of the war since March 2003 was estimated at $450 billion.

"No one as yet has calculated the costs of long-term veterans' benefits or the total impact on service personnel and materiel," wrote Collins, who was involved in planning post-invasion humanitarian operations.

The report said that the United States has suffered serious political costs, with its standing in the world seriously diminished. Moreover, operations in Iraq have diverted "manpower, materiel and the attention of decision-makers" from "all other efforts in the war on terror" and severely strained the U.S. armed forces.
