75yr old Rep. John Murtha Says McCain Too Old To Be President

Murtha says McCain too old to be president

Apr 16, 5:08 PM (ET),By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Murtha said Wednesday that Republican Sen. John McCain is too old to be president. Murtha is 75, four years older than McCain. He says they are nearly the same age, and the rigors and stress of running the country is too much for guys their age.

"I've served with seven presidents," Murtha told a union audience. "When they come in, they all make mistakes. They all get older."

"This one guy running is about as old as me," he said, drawing laughter and applause. "Let me tell you something, it's no old man's job."

If elected, McCain would be the oldest man to become president at age 72. Ronald Reagan became president at age 69, but he served as president for eight years and was just a few weeks shy of his 78th birthday when he left office...

Poll Shows Erosion Of Trust

Poll Shows Erosion Of Trust In Clinton

PHILADELPHIA, April 16, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Washingtonpost.com) This story was written by Anne E. Kornblut and Jon Cohen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lost in the Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign's aggressive attacks on Barack Obama in recent days is a deep and enduring problem that threatens to undercut any inroads Clinton has made in her struggle to overtake him in the Democratic presidential race: She has lost trust among voters, a majority of whom now view her as dishonest.

Her advisers' efforts to deal with the problem -- by having her acknowledge her mistakes and crack self-deprecating jokes -- do not seem to have succeeded. Privately, the aides admit that the recent controversy over her claim to have ducked sniper fire on a trip to Bosnia probably made things worse.

Clinton is viewed as "honest and trustworthy" by just 39 percent of Americans, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, compared with 52 percent in May 2006. Nearly six in 10 said in the new poll that she is not honest and trustworthy. And now, compared with Obama, Clinton has a deep trust deficit among Democrats, trailing him by 23 points as the more honest, an area on which she once led both Obama and John Edwards.

Among Democrats, 63 percent called her honest, down 18 points from 2006; among independents, her trust level has dropped 13 points, to 37 percent. Republicans held Clinton in low regard on this in the past (23 percent called her honest two years ago), but it is even lower now, at 16 percent. Majorities of men and women now say the phrase does not apply to Clinton; two years ago, narrow majorities of both did.

Advisers argue that her positive ratings have dipped as she has been defined by her opponents -- a normal campaign occurrence -- and that her honesty problem reflects the pounding she took from Republicans in the 1990s. But the Bosnia incident and the way the campaign handled it have left advisers divided over what a candidate can do after such a steep drop in trust.

Is it just me?

Is Hillary manipulating the questions?

I can't believe they have spent all this time on Rev Wright.

I am so disappointed in George S. asking Obama if Rev Wright loves this country as much as you!! Unbelievable!

After introducing Obama they showed the audience and it was just a shot of the audience, no one was spotlighted.

Here is the lowdown:

The media reports something. Then the media reports that it reported something. Then the media reports that the media is discussing the stuff that the media reported on reporting on.

Then a debate rolls around, so the media asks questions about the stuff that the media reported on reporting on after it reported that it reported something that it originally reported.

Clinton emphatically says

Clinton emphatically says Obama can win White House By BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writer
11 minutes ago

PHILADELPHIA - Hillary Rodham Clinton said emphatically Wednesday night that Barack Obama can win the White House this fall, undercutting her efforts to deny him the nomination by suggesting he would lead the party to defeat.

"Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability during a campaign debate six days before the Pennsylvania primary.

Asked a similar question about Clinton, Obama said "Absolutely and I've said so before" — a not-so-subtle response to suggestions from his rival that he could not defeat Republican Sen. John McCain.

In a 90-minute debate, both rivals pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000, and said they would respond forcefully if Iran obtains nuclear weapons and uses them against Israel.

"An attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation by the United States," said Clinton.

Obama said, "The U.S. would take appropriate action."

In a debate that moved swiftly between politics and policy, Clinton also issued a first-ever public apology for having claimed erroneously that she landed in Bosnia under sniper fire in 1996 as first lady.

George Stephanopoulos and James Carville ran Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign. He's one of the two main subjects of the "War Room" documentary about that campaign, and he's widely believed to have inspired the Henry Burton character who is the protagonist of Joe Klein's "Primary Colors". When Clinton reached the White House, Stephanopoulos served as communications director and conducted briefings of the White House press corps, even though Dee Dee Myers was the actual press secretary.

Given the depth of Stephanopoulos' experience in shaping Bill Clinton's public image, appointing him as a moderator in a debate including Hillary Clinton is an egregious violation of balance. CNN sidelined Stephanopoulos' "War Room" partner James Carville due to his conflict of interest. What's ABC's problem

Yes when there is a 3 hour difference I notice too.
But I didn't notice that 3 hour difference til 3 hours passed... it was within the 10 -15 min of thread changing that I am speaking about... And my point is about how we need to make sure to be inclusive of ALL Sederistas - not just the ones who are old hands, but newbies as well. There has been some tension on the blog here lately with all that has happened and I do not want new people coming here looking for Sam, to feel welcomed and embraced by the community...which is why I am making a point about noting that even I felt left behind, when I know tht it was not intentional.

this is not an attack on you or your comment - I know you meant no more than snark which I appreciate. But there is a larger issue here and we need to remember the big picture.

I've noticed that when there is a 3 hour difference between posts, a new thread is launched, and I'm responding to empty air.

Wow. What the hell was that? Seriously, I'm a bit stunned. The level of discourse has reached a new low -- a very new low. To be clear, I don't think the debate was a disaster for Obama. He did fine. I think it was a disaster for our political system.

It was the worst debate ever. Gibson and Stephanopoulos were horrible. The questions were literally right out of right wing talk radio. Atrios provides an opportunity for action:
Complain about this atrocity.

And, for Hillary Clinton to get so giddy about the Wright question was really just sad. She was the official purveyor of fringe talking points. Shockingly so. And, she seemed to enjoy it. There's a reason people think Clinton is dishonest as we saw today in the findings of the Washington Post-ABC News poll. She's not only in this to win, she's in it to win dirty -- and to destroy Obama. She invoked Louis Farrakhan tonight for no reason -- just to say it. Give me a break. Throughout this campaign, Clinton has pursued GOP attacks against Obama. He has not gone there against her.

Jacki: Ok, first off, I went to Facebook to see what people were saying there since ABC promoted it. Seems everyone there agrees with us here. This debate was just horrible. Too much time wasted on useless nonsense. From a media perspective, I am not sure why Stephanopoulos was in the mix at all. He didn't add much, and if anything, his history with the Clintons had the potential to take something away. I thought Gibson was especially rough on Obama, and I think ABC did not do themselves any good with this debate. If I weren't liveblogging, I would have switched to AI.
