Heard part of Randi's show today... very wierd to hear all the imaging and and then realize she's not on Air America... I'll have an update for folks by the end of the week....and thanks to those who have signed this petition...

Hey Sam

EYE LUV U---fuck the world that fooled the world!!

thanks Sam, I signed the petition and finally emailed this

pcollin guy - had to make some effort to control myself and be polite or at least not rude as my first inclination always is in these matters, I hope I succeeded

Dear Mr. Collin:

I read in the New York Times and on various websites/blogs that Sam Seder is being considered by Air America Radio for the Randi Rhodes spot and I am writing to express my wishful thinking that AAR Management might make the right decision this time and give Sam Seder the job. I am a long time fan and would support him and the radio station in every possible way, by getting a membership subscription, tuning in, encouraging advertisers, encouraging others to join. I have been disappointed many times in the past by ill advised programming decisions at Air America and seen my favorite hosts disappear and treated poorly. I do hope it doesn't happen this time. Particularly at a time when the station has a black eye from the Rhodes affair, it would be a coup de grace to your company, a horrible blunder, I believe. Sam Seder enjoys a lot of well-deserved support. Please give Sam Seder a daily show.

Thank you

Mirella Augusto

Me too Sam

McCain and Hillary join forces smearing Obama with 'elitest'

Oh, Hillary -- it's 'just words'.... Oh, I forgot. It's NOT a two-way street. Only Hillary's Kosovo lies are inconsequential words; only Obama's charismatic rhetorical skills are inconsequential words. We must listen to Hill and Bill when we want to know which words count and what everybody's words mean....

CBS: Iraqi government

CBS: Iraqi government corruption funds insurgents who kill Americans

David Edwards and Muriel Kane

The government of Iraq is facing many challenges to its ability to run the country, both internal and external. According to a new report by 60 Minutes, "one of the biggest problems is corruption, which is robust even by Middle Eastern standards."

"Bribery and outright theft are flourishing in virtually every Iraqi ministry," notes CBS's Steve Kroft, "and some of those ill-gotten gains are being used to kill American troops."

State Department official James Mattil told CBS that the corruption is "across-the-board." Much of the stolen money finds its way to Iraqi insurgents or militias, while "in other cases, it is the militias and insurgents themselves who control some of the ministries who are involved in the corruption."

"It's known and tolerated by the prime minister and other officials within the government," emphasized Mattil, who observed the corruption first-hand while assigned as an advisor to Iraq's former Commissioner of Public Integrity, Judge Radhi al-Radhi.

Judge Radhi himself told CBS during an interview in 2006 that more than half a billion dollars had been stolen from the Iraqi defense ministry. Following that interview, he attempted to widen his investigation to other ministries, but was met with death threats and the murder of thirty-one members of his staff. In July 2007 a missile was fired at his house. He and his family finally left Iraq last September and are now living in the suburbs of Washington, DC.

Shortly before Radhi left Iraq, his commission was coming under increasing pressure from Prime Minister Maliki, who issued a memo saying they could not bring charges against anyone in the president's office or current or former ministers without his permission.

"It basically put a stop to any anti-corruption activities within the Iraqi government," Mattil told CBS, "and it came directly from the prime minister's office."

Mattil shared this memo with his colleagues at the State Department but received no response. A draft report on the corruption was leaked to the press last summer, but the State Department responded only by making the report classified.

After Radhi sought asylum in the United States, he was called to testify before the House Oversight Committee. Chairman Henry Waxman then asked Secretary of State Rice to comment on Rhadi's allegations.

"Mr. Chairman, I will have to get back to you," Rice replied. "I don't know precisely what you are referring to."

"Six months later," CBS concludes, "Waxman's staff was still waiting for an answer."

think: what does sammy do on sundays and tuesdays that he couldn't do 24/7 (theoretically) without commercial, broadcast radio?

he doesn't need a 'radio deal'. he can do everything (plus live streaming video, plus vod/podcast), online, and make more money than AAR or NovaM or any broadcast syndicate could afford to pay him.

Obama hits back at

Obama hits back at inexperience charge from GOP lawmaker
Nick Juliano

GOP congressman calls Obama 'boy' at fundraiser, later apologizes
A Republican congressman used some of the most racially charged language of the election season to attack Barack Obama's fitness to be president, causing the Illinois Senator's campaign to issue a sharp rebuke Monday.

Rep. Geoff Davis was speaking to about 400 donors at a fundraiser in Kentucky, when he said of Obama, "That boy's finger does not need to be on the button."

Obama's campaign hit back against the "offensive" comment.

“It's hard to tell what is more outrageous - Representative Davis' condescending and personal attack, or his absurd and offensive claim that Barack Obama is not prepared to defend America," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. "Geoff Davis may hide behind offensive tough talk, but he has marched in lock-step with Bush-McCain policies that have devastated our national security while Barack Obama has stood up against a misguided war in Iraq and worked with respected Republicans like Dick Lugar and Chuck Hagel to secure loose weapons and nuclear materials from terrorists.”

A Davis spokesperson said the two-term Republican "misspoke" and was not trying to be racist.

Later, Davis issued a written apology to the Democratic frontrunner.

"My poor choice of words is regrettable and was in no way meant to impugn you or the your integrity," Davis wrote, according to the ABC News blog Political Radar. "I offer my sincere apology to you and ask for your forgiveness."

It also appears Davis may have released classified information in the exchange.

He said in his remarks at the GOP dinner that he also recently participated in a "highly classified, national security simulation" with Obama. "I'm going to tell you something: That boy's finger does not need to be on the button," Davis said. "He could not make a decision in that simulation that related to a nuclear threat to this country."

It's unclear just what kind of classified simulation Davis could be referring to. A Davis spokesperson wouldn't talk about it. Both elected in 2004, Obama and Davis serve in opposite chambers of Congress, and they sit on different committees, so there's little chance they would have crossed paths much.

Oil prices surge to new

Oil prices surge to new records on supply woes, weak dollar

World oil prices surged Monday, although London prices failed to hold on to record peaks, amid fresh supply jitters and lingering concerns about the ailing US dollar, traders said.

Prices in New York held close to record highs of above 112 dollars which were struck last week on news of falling energy stockpiles in the United States.

New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in May, closed up 1.52 dollars at 111.76 dollars a barrel compared with Friday's close, marking a record closing high.

The contract had rocketed to a record 112.21 dollars last Wednesday.

In London, Brent North Sea crude for May delivery settled down 1.09 dollars at 109.84 dollars shortly after the contract broke through the 110-dollar barrier for the first time.

Brent oil briefly traded at a record 110.01 dollars before receding as the London market closed for the day.

Traders seized on fresh supply concerns in the United States, which is the world's biggest economy and the largest global consumer of energy.

Analysts said reports of a temporary shutdown to repair a small leak in Shell's Capline pipeline system, which transports oil into the US Midwest, helped to boost prices.

"Supply and demand factors remain tight, so any prolonged closures of the Capline pipeline could push (the) crude price even higher amid declining inventories in the US Midwest region," said analysts at the Sucden brokerage in London.

However, they warned: "Because this matter is simply a logistics problem, any price surge as result of this closure would most likely be short term."

Meanwhile, Petroleos Mexicanos, the third largest supplier to the United States, closed two oil export terminals in the Gulf of Mexico due to bad weather.

Rupert Murdoch joins Associated Press board.
Today, the Associated Press announced at its annual meeting that Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive officer of News Corp., is joining its board of directors. Three other media moguls are also joining the board, including Sam Zell, who recently “took control of Tribune Co. after leading a buyout that resulted in the publicly traded company becoming private.”

AP Chairman Refers to "Obama

AP Chairman Refers to "Obama bin Laden" -- In Posing Question to Barack Obama

By Joe Strupp

Published: April 14, 2008 3:00 PM ET

WASHINGTON After addressing the journalists gathered at the annual Associated Press luncheon in Washington, D.C., today, Sen. Barack Obama, standing at the podium, took a few questions. The last one from the audience, delivered via AP chairman W. Dean Singleton, was related to Afghanistan, our troops in Iraq and the threat posed by, as Singleton put it, "Obama bin Laden."

Obama quickly corrected Singleton. “That’s Osama bin Laden,” he said. The crowd laughed a bit. "If I did that, I am so sorry," Singleton replied.

Then Obama said, “This is part of what I have been going through for the past months, which is why it is impressive that I am still standing here.”

Singleton earlier had introduced Obama by noting that there were more than 1100 attendees at the luncheon, believed to be the first sold out AP luncheon ever. “One thing I can say about you is, you sure are a draw," Singleton said. "You’ve done better than the Rolling Stones do. We are glad to have a little extra income....Imagine that, journalists and media folks slugging it out to pay to hear a politician.”

Last year’s speakers were Mike Huckabee and Eliot Spitzer. “I can be sure that Sen. Obama did not spend last night at the Mayflower Hotel,” Singleton quipped.

Obama's talk had amounted to little more than a basic stump speech and his answers to questions tended to be rather long-winded -- at least until the Osama/Obama reference -- and some luncheon attendees exited early.

Unlike Sen. John McCain this morning in speaking to the AP annual meeting, Obama did not tailor his talk to media issues and the debate over the proposed federal shield law for reporters.

Dem FEC Nominee Withdraws,

Dem FEC Nominee Withdraws, Leading to Further Delay
By Paul Kiel - April 14, 2008, 3:04PM
Things were already looking pretty hopeless for the FEC, but they just got bleaker. In a letter to White House chief of staff Josh Bolten today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) says that Robert Lenhard, one of the Democratic nominees for the commission, has withdrawn his name because of the ongoing stalemate.

It will most likely take "several months" to replace Lenhard, Reid writes, meaning that it's sure to be awhile before Democrats and Republicans can agree on a batch of nominees. Not that there have been any signs of hope anyway: Democrats continue to insist that the Senate vote on vote-suppression guru Hans von Spakovsky separately from the other three nominees, and Republicans refuse to allow that.

Meanwhile, the fracas over John McCain's withdrawal from public financing goes unresolved and outside groups are mounting up without worry of any imminent harassment from the FEC.

Update: By way of explanation, Lenhard has landed a gig (sub. req.) at the mega firm Covington & Burling.

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/04/dem_fec_nominee_withdr...

I heard that while I was listening to C span in my car

Obama did a really good job I thought. I even postponed my swim time so I could hear the rest of the event....I did not get that it was stump speech....

then I cut my swim short to hear Randi's beginning...gotta say I was disappointed could have swum for 15 more minutes...

i also got it 4 times (or was it three?)

that's what i needed to finally get off my arse and do what was required

after the past 2 weeks

I think we can agree that the randi soap opera and the novam deal were ALL about randi and had nothing to do with sam.he was a pawn who was used both by aar and randi to further their own monetery agendas.

I hope soon sam will quit aar and do seder v maron until he finds something else.At this point even if he was offered a 5 day gig with aar i would hope he would not accept based on principle alone.

IN

the meantime may i offer as a distraction the foo fighters new video 'The Pretender' free on youtube.it sums up what's really going on in this country.

guy fawkes sam is not stupid

and knows what he wants - if he wants a job with aar that's his business - and truly i do understand - if he were to do his own thing he would be doomed to do constant fundraising, hat in hand and be always subject to one of us not coming thru somehow, lost job, moved out of the country, not into radio anymore, who knows, our support that's great, we're great, but hey how reliable is that for someone who has a family to support, (voluntary subscription!) someone like sam who deserves to be on tv, on prime time, with a megabucks contract, to have his own show which would make jon stewart's shrink, keith olb pale, especially with maron it would be a blockbuster, why does he have to be relegated to a closed community? I understand his situation

Will you help me get a daily show?
Hi Folks,

I just wanted to give you an update on the recent tumult at Air America. As you may have heard Randi Rhodes was suspended by Air America management for inappropriate language she used during a stand up comedy routine she performed at an affiliate function in San Francisco. I wouldn't have done the bit she did, but I said on air that I didn't think that based on the context of her comments, that the suspension was appropriate. Of course, management has the right to create and execute any policy they want.
After a week, Randi decided to quit Air America and move over to NovaM. Randi was Air America's highest rated show by far and I think in many respects she was underappreciated by some of Air America's management. Is she temperamental, free spoken, a goddess? Yes, of course. That's what has made her a success in talk radio. Are those traits uncommon in the entertainment industry? All I know is that I have directed Gary Busey and Andy Dick -- Randi Rhodes is not a problem child!

That said, Randi is gone, the 3-6pm slot is open and my Seder On Sunday contract is drawing to its end. I expect most affiliates will pickup Randi but 3-6 pm is a good time slot and some affiliates will be looking for a change. I've told Air America management I am interested (I suspect they already knew).

Will you support me getting back on the air five days a week?

Robert Greenwald, creator of OutFoxed and proprietor of BraveNewFilms has set up a petition, will it make a difference if Air America knows that folks want me on the air? I don't know, but it might!

Sign the petition here!

Want to do more? Send pcollins@airamerica.com an email and let him know you'd like me on air 5 days a week!

In the meantime, I'll update you as to what happens and what my plans are going forward and check out SamSederShow.com and don't forget when Marc Maron returns in a week from Australia we resume Seder V. Maron .. see past episodes here.

I killed

Perhaps that is why Seder and Maron were underwhelmed.

Carl Bialik has a nice assessment of the ARG poll in Pennsylvania that includes this tease of the new Quinnipiac numbers due out tomorrow:

Other pollsters’ numbers disagree with ARG’s. Clay Richards, who runs the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute’s Pennsylvania poll, said he doesn’t expect his poll that will be published Tuesday to show much difference from the last one, which had a Clinton lead of six points. “I don’t see that much movement in Pennsylvania myself,” Mr. Richards said by phone from Harrisburg on Monday.

THE 1992 CAMPAIGN: Democrats;

Club Where Clinton Has Golfed Retains Ways of Old South

Published: March 23, 1992

The Country Club of Little Rock, where Bill Clinton has played golf several times a year since he became Governor, sits on a graceful hill in an exclusive neighborhood called the Heights, its greens sloping down to the Arkansas River. Opened just after the turn of the century, it recalls an older South in many ways, including its membership: 500 white men and women.

Last week Mr. Clinton, his quest for the Democratic Presidential nomination seemingly wrapped up, found himself under fire for playing at the club, and he quickly admitted he had made a mistake and vowed never to play there again until it was integrated.

"A guy asked me to play nine holes of golf," he said on Friday. "It was the only place we had time to play. I should not have done it."

But he did not explain why he had played at the club for years despite its all-white membership. Today, Mike Gauldin, his spokesman in Arkansas, was asked that question; he said, "No one ever complained about it before."

Mr. Clinton's mea culpa has not defused the criticism. In New York today, his chief rival, Edmund G. Brown Jr. of California, said that "even George Bush wouldn't dare play golf at an all-white golf club."

Little Rock Country Club's members are admitted by a board of governors. The initiation fee is said to be $20,000, with dues of $150 a month.

She also said Kent Jones will be on with Belzer all week.
They mentioned he will be doing Lawton Smalls.

I don't like that one bit!

Very disappointing

I love Mike!

I love Mike! That man is loyal. Yes, I still love and will listen to Randi. I was just hurt by
her rude comments today. Sam has always been good to her and it seemed real petty. Oh well. At least we know Sam has one real friend at Nova M. Mike Malloy! I was so glad to hear Mike repeat (two or three times) that the “next move” was to get Sam Seder.

"Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind." - John F. Kennedy

Randi's point of view

Randi said that AA was in breach of her contract because she had no morals clause and because they were not allowed to suspend her without pay per her contract. So in Randi's mind when Sam said AA had a right to suspend her she took that as being disloyal.

Plus, Sam WAS very tepid in his comments about her stand up routine. He seemed pained to think of any positive comments he could make.

So, I can understand where she is coming from.

I think she was hurt.

Remember I think it was Randi that was the first host to ask Sam to substitute for her.

Didn't get a mail

I was gonna get around to signing up again sometime tonight, so I guess that's what I'll do unless someone says different.

Elitist Bufoon Italian Billionaire Berlusconi 'Wins' Election

Uh Oh... how did this "elitist buffoon" become prime minister again:

Italian Billionaire Berlusconi 'Wins' Election

ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Billionaire conservative former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi is on track to become Italy's next leader after his center-left rival Walter Veltroni Monday conceded general election defeat.

Incomplete election results show Berlusconi, 71, with a commanding lead in both houses of parliament.

Veltroni, who recently stepped down as mayor of Rome, delivered a concession speech live Monday night on Italian television.

Berlusconi, a charismatic center-right billionaire who served two terms as prime minister, and Veltroni were the two main contenders among 32 candidates vying to replace Romano Prodi, who stepped down as prime minister in January.

The new prime minister will lead Italy's 63rd government since the end of World War II. Arcane electoral laws giving many small parties in parliament a disproportionate amount of power are blamed in part for the frequent collapses of the nation's governments.

Berlusconi of the People of Freedom Party, was prime minister from May 1994 to January 1995 and again from April 2005 to May 2006. He then narrowly lost a re-election bid to Prodi.
advertisement

While Berlusconi is nearly 20 years older than the 52-year-old Veltroni, the media magnate's plastic surgery, hair transplant, and year-round tan have turned him into the eternal youngster of Italian politics. His bypass surgery since leaving office seemed to have little to no impact on the election.

Berlusconi ran his campaign with his trademark bravado, arguing he is the only one who could give Italy the future it needs.

but Sam and Marc are seasoned stand ups...Randi is very green..My bestest friend is a stand up and she says that using the language is a cheep way to get laughs...really good comics don't do that unless it is their shtick. It would be like Sam getting a luck warm review in the beginning from Randi about talk show hosting and Sam being upset about it. She needs to take the crit if she wants to persue the stand up...just as Sam and Jeneane did at first..

Randi needs to get over herself.

Here's the deal

To end this Obama/Elitist bullshit. So what if he can't bowl?!?! ( I'm sure if he practiced he'd be good. )

Here's my suggestion: Challenge Hillary and McCain to a 2 on 1 game of basketball. Then let's see who's elitist!!

Think that'll work?

Patrolling for Trolls

As OpEdNews.com (OEN) grows and matures, there will be inevitable growing pains. As more and more readers come to OpEdNews.com to get information and opinions that they cannot get through the mainstream media, it is inevitable that some who disagree with our progressive worldview will try to throw a monkey wrench into the works.

You've all encountered them in the comments sections of OEN articles, I'm sure. Trolls.

Trolls come in all flavors. There are Republican trolls with their angry, twisted-logic rhetoric, and there are arguably trolls within the Democratic ranks as well.

Is it possible to clearly define what makes someone a troll? I think it is. A troll is someone who spreads obvious disinformation, often reposting the same disinformation as comments on multiple articles. This is a form of spam.
Further, trolls will often have a minimal, or even no Bio listed, or a bogus bio, often use fake names and will have never posted an article or diary, or at most a few flimsy articles or diaries.

Trolls generally have a clearly defined agenda, and almost always use negative attacks, ad hominem comments, flat-out lies or they try to hijack threads, taking them far away from the focus of the article. Another common troll maneuver is to re-post lies or urban legends, or to paste long postings that are exact copies of articles or forwarded emails from right-wing lists.

Case in point concerning Democratic trolls: "jacksmith" had reposted the same lengthy diatribes against Barack Obama under several different articles. Here is an excerpt from one of those troll postings:

"Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama's. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!"

Notice how this troll cites "it shows" as their source of factual information for how Hillary Clinton is ahead in the actual delegate count. Bogus. This troll, who probably used a fake name, was banned and ALL comments were removed.

Wal-Mart To Film Gun Sales In Bid To Fight Crime

Damn, I'm going to have to stop my monthly multiple gun buys at WallMart now that they are doing this:

Wal-Mart To Film Gun Sales In Bid To Fight Crime

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, unveiled plans on Monday to film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands.

Wal-Mart, which is the largest seller of firearms in the United States, agreed a 10-point code, which also includes rigid inventory controls, with a bipartisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns led by New York's Michael Bloomberg.

The retailer said it will develop a first-of-its-kind computerized crime gun trace log that will flag purchases by customers who have previously bought guns later recovered in crimes.

"Wal-Mart currently uses a strong point of sale system," said J.P. Suarez, senior vice president and chief compliance officer of Wal-Mart. "This code is a way for us to fine-tune the things we're already doing and further strengthen our standards. We hope other retailers will join us."

The Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership is designed to strengthen the points in the gun purchasing system that criminals have exploited in the past, Wal-Mart and the Mayors Against Illegal Guns said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 46 percent of its criminal gun trafficking investigations involved cases in which someone who is not legally allowed to purchase a firearm does so through the use of a proxy, known as a straw buyer.

Survey Finds 98% Of Historians Consider Bush A 'Failure'

Survey Finds 98% Of Historians Consider Bush A 'Failure':

The First Draft of History Looks a Bit Rough on Bush
By Kenneth T. Walsh - April 11, 2008

President Bush often argues that history will vindicate him. So he can't be pleased with an informal survey of 109 professional historians conducted by the History News Network. It found that 98 percent of them believe that Bush's presidency has been a failure, while only about 2 percent see it as a success. Not only that, more than 61 percent of the historians say the current presidency is the worst in American history. In 2004, only 11.6 percent of the historians rated Bush's presidency in last place. Among the reasons given for his low ratings: invading Iraq, "tax breaks for the rich," and alienating many nations around the world. Bush supporters counter that professional historians today tend to be liberal and that it's too early to assess how his policies will turn out.

Sam sends seder reader e-mails very rarely...-read my explanation of how it has to be done in my last post above for why as part of the explanation, and his being very busy covering for others time slots and finding time to spend with his family while working on the AAR website - that revamp from what I know about websites having built some myself took a hell of a lot of time even if you are not the code person (and neither was I the code person)

Morning Consolidationists:Delta and Northwest agree to combine

Hey if Belzer can do it,so can I !

By HARRY R. WEBER, AP Business Writer

ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp., squeezed by record high fuel prices and a slowing economy, are combining in a stock-swap deal that would create the world's biggest carrier.

The boards of both companies gave the deal the go-ahead Monday.

Delta said the combined airline, which will be called Delta, will have an enterprise value of $17.7 billion. It will be based in Atlanta, and Delta CEO Richard Anderson will head the combined company.

I'm not gonna get in a fight with you about all that, esp. cuz I don't know the level of sarcasm or the perspective involved but, in "Standard American English:"

Basically, there was a problem with spelling and then you said something that would sound in English/American like "very really wonkish," which doesn't sound "grammatical" or "natural."

Or it could be another grammatical error entirely if you meant "wonkismo" to be equivalent to "wonkishness."

That's all.

"Fight," was meant totally verbally/rhetorically. I still don't want to get into that, especially since I promised I'd shut up.

Wow.

Never thought it would get ugly. Calling Kevin and moi spammers?

Whatever. My support of Randi has nothing to do with my support for Sam. I can differentiate the two, as distinct radio personalities. I like them for their different qualities. I'll support Sam however I can. But AAR is officially dead to me at this point. Can't help it if that's still his current employer. I hope Malloy's right and can push Nova M to get 'er done.

So what if she dissed Sam? How thin-skinned are you people? SHE DISSES EVERYBODY. That's her schtick. Either you like it you don't. You have the freedom of choice to listen or not.

I never heard Sam say the things she thought she heard. But then again, I don't hear every syllable that comes out of his mouth in three hours, and I don't think like Randi. Truth is, I don't really care one way or the other. I can walk away from Randi or Sam anytime I choose to. But instead, I choose to fight for both of the voices I love on the radio.

But, spammer? Please.

Thanks for having my back, toniDeee... now I think I know how you felt when you left the blog in a huff before. Just total bullshit somedays from these newbies that have no clue the changes and fuck-ups we've had to endure since AAR began, it's nose dive, then slow death, then revival, and slow death again, and now the re-launch.

How many times have we done our part to save the AAR programs and personalities we loved? Too many. I've signed the petition and emailed my support of Sam over and over and over again. AAR has been consistent in one thing only: ignoring their core audience and dismissing us. It's futile.

If I'm wrong, then great! Sam gets a daily show and I'd be happy as hell for that. The newbies haven't a fucking clue what we've been doing for the last four years.

And yet, I'm still here for Sam; still supporting him and Marc and yes.., even Randi, three very different personalities I love to hear as often as I can.

Sorry

In Michigan, Obama wins and Clinton loses against McCain

This is actually pretty funny. For the past few weeks, Hillary Clinton has become the great defender of Michigan voters. She went to Detroit last month to deliver the message that she alone was fighting for them:

“The people in Michigan and particularly Democrats in Michigan know that Michigan matters in both the primary and general election,” she told a crowd of more than 300 people at the AFSCME Local 25 union hall in Detroit. “If the Democrats send a message that we don’t care about your votes, I’m sure that John McCain and the Republicans will be happy to have them.”

Huh. Interestingly, the people of Michigan have a different take -- and it's not good for Clinton. From Political Wire:

Sen. Barack Obama "holds a small lead over Sen. John McCain in the race for Michigan's 17 electoral votes, but McCain holds a significant lead over Hillary Clinton," according to a new EPIC-MRA poll.

In general election match ups, Obama leads McCain, 43% to 41%, while McCain leads Clinton, 46% to 37%.

EPIC-MRA is the polling firm for Michigan.

"What if they gave a controversy and nobody came?"

Crowd Boos Clinton on "Bitter" (Olbermann's on it, hee)

Update: Oh fun, Olbermann picked up the booing incident on Countdown tonight. The story made the show opening along with something like "What if they gave a controversy and nobody came?" Even reporting Rendell has played down the dust-up and asserting it won't cost Obama the nomination. Bad day for Clinton.

Anyway, Clinton was speaking at a manufacturing meeting and mentioned how she was disappointed in Sen. Obama for his "Bitter" remark.

MSNBC reported on and played a sound bite of the crowd groaning and booing in response. The reporter clearly stated that the crowd was showing displeasure at Clinton for bringing it up.

I am starting to feel sorry for Hillary

hope she has an out after Penn so she can unite and save the day and go back and be a pretty good senator

She looks really tired....I couldn't do it in a hot second

Rural PA columnist says Obama's characterizations on target.

Baer would know -- he grew up among the people that Obama is talking about.

"Bitter" perhaps best describes my late mother, an angry Irish Catholic who absolutely clung to her religion.

Dad, also a journalist, wasn't really bitter as far as I know, but he sure liked to hunt.

So, despite carping from Hillary Clinton and annoying yapping from her surrogates (really, it's like turning on the lights at night in a puppy farm), I take no offense.

What's offensive to me is suggesting that small-town, working-class, gun-toting and/or religious Pennsylvanians are somehow injured by a politician's words.

That is because that is not for Hillary to decide -- people have to decide what they themselves feel about Obama's remarks, or any person's remarks, for that matter. In fact, it seems that Hillary may have overreached -- in trying to pounce on Obama's remarks, it seems that she may have wound up becoming elitist herself -- by trying to speak for rural PA voters instead of letting them speak for themselves.

Article - Insured paying higher co-pays

Health insurance companies are rapidly adopting a new pricing system for very expensive drugs, asking patients to pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars for prescriptions for medications that may save their lives or slow the progress of serious diseases

With the new pricing system, insurers abandoned the traditional arrangement that has patients pay a fixed amount, like $10, $20 or $30 for a prescription, no matter what the drug’s actual cost. Instead, they are charging patients a percentage of the cost of certain high-priced drugs, usually 20 to 33 percent, which can amount to thousands of dollars a month.

The system means that the burden of expensive health care can now affect insured people, too

Threats close 3 colleges, 4

Threats close 3 colleges, 4 more schools By TARA BURGHART, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 31 minutes ago

CHICAGO - A message scrawled in a university bathroom — "Be prepared to die on 4/14" — left not just the college's campus empty Monday, but also those of two adjoining high schools and a pair of nearby elementary schools.

After the precautions were taken at St. Xavier University on the city's southwest side, Malcolm X College evacuated students and canceled daytime classes Monday after a similar threat was found in a bathroom at the campus west of downtown. And Michigan's Oakland University was closed Monday because of threatening graffiti mentioning April 14.

The closures, two days before the anniversary of the Virginia Tech killings and two months after the deadly rampage at Northern Illinois University, illustrate the challenge such threats pose to school administrators, who have to decide just how seriously to take them.

"I can see why they're doing it for the safety of the kids. But I see it as over the top," said Lynn Ruggiero, whose daughter is a freshman at one of the high schools that shares a campus with Xavier and closed Monday.

Ruggiero said she figures whoever wrote the threat "is getting a certain satisfaction" from putting thousands of Chicago students out of class. Still, she knows school officials have a hard time pleasing everyone.

"If they hadn't closed, people would have said, 'How come you didn't?'"

St. Xavier and Malcolm X are located about 15 miles apart, and despite the fact that the threats had similar wording, there was no indication they were related, Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said. The graffiti at St. Xavier was widely publicized over the weekend, and also contained in updates the college placed on its Web site.

While St. Xavier decided Friday to close until further notice, classes at Malcolm X resumed late Monday afternoon after bomb-sniffing dogs swept the campus.

Oakland University, an 18,000-student state school about 20 miles north of Detroit, planned to resume classes Tuesday. The graffiti that prompted its shutdown also made a reference to "4/14" but didn't specify a type or time of an attack, university spokesman Ted Montgomery said.

Dear Representative:

I am writing to urge you to support H.R. 5036 when it comes to the House Floor this Tuesday. The 'Emergency Election Assistance for Secure Elections Act' - the "EASY" bill - is needed to secure the November 2008 elections. Broad support in the House will ensure passage by the Senate and approval by the president in time for the November election.
H.R. 5036 will provide states with funding for paper-based voting systems and audits of the vote count. The bill will assure election integrity nationally by making sure that votes are counted in a transparent and audit-able way.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Obama: Clinton using GOP

Obama: Clinton using GOP playbook By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent
Mon Apr 14, 7:29 PM ET

After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

when offered a cup o' joe at a photoshop, Senator Obama asked for a glass of orange juice, instead.

good god, man - what on earth were you thinking?

this was supposed to be the lead story for at least 72 hours, but was overshadowed by the senator's temerity to point out the obvious truth - people whose livelihoods and communities have been destroyed by government policies extended over decades lose hope. There are adults in the country's rust-belt that have never themselves known prosperity, but have seen fictional accounts of it on television, and know that there are people in this country who don't worry about money, or losing their jobs, or getting sick and dying for lack of money.

the amazing thing to me is that people who have never had any reason to hope, still can find it - in the lottery, in religion, in the false prophets and scam-artists that prey on them every single day.

the 'elite' are the ones who are the most terrified of all, and live in a state of perpetual denial.

chris rock - one of this generation's greatest philosophers - speaks of of the 'two americas' eloquently in his parable of 'two malls'... the one where the white people go, and the one where the white people used to go.

Bitter? Of Course. Here's

Bitter? Of Course. Here's Why
By Isaiah J. Poole

Honest discussion about the roots of working-class angst and how to address it has gotten seriously burned in the firestorm of controversy fanned around comments by Sen. Barack Obama that working-class people are "bitter" about the economy and government.

However poorly phrased his original comments were, they were based on a fundamental truth: that conservatism, having failed for more than three decades in its promise to bring broad prosperity to all Americans, has exploited the issues of God, guns and gays—and the lie that government is their enemy—to keep their con going.

For awhile it worked, as millions of voters were convinced to vote against their interests by conservatives armed with polarizing rhetoric. But there is no disputing the anger as these same working-class voters are finding that they've been duped.

The percentage of Americans polled by Gallup who say that they are worse off than they were five years ago—31 percent—is the highest recorded by the polling firm since it started asking the question in the mid-1960s. And that belief is based in reality: Median household income in 2006, $48,201, was lower in inflation-adjusted dollars than it was in 1999, the Census Bureau reports. The latest Democracy Corps memo includes a poll finding that 74 percent of Americans believe the economy is seriously off track.

That same memo also suggests that voters have caught on that conservatives who claimed they were taking government "off the backs" of the working class have put in into the pocket of corporations. "The focus of people’s anger are the corporate special interests that dominate government, producing a demand that politicians make it a priority to take back government for middle class Americans," the memo says.

But there's been a lot more interest among the punditocracy in branding Obama "elitist" for trying to synthesize this working-class anger than in talking about causes and solutions. As former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich writes in his blog:

Are Americans who have been left behind frustrated? Of course. And their frustrations, their anger and, yes, sometimes their bitterness, have been used since then -- by demagogues, by nationalists and xenophobes, by radical conservatives, by political nuts and fanatical fruitcakes – to blame immigrants and foreign traders, to blame blacks and the poor, to blame "liberal elites," to blame anyone and anything.

Rather than counter all this, the American media have wallowed in it. Some, like Fox News and talk radio, have given the haters and blamers their very own megaphones. The rest have merely "reported on" it. Instead of focusing on how to get Americans good jobs again; instead of admitting too many of our schools are failing and our kids are falling behind their contemporaries in Europe, Japan, and even China; instead of showing why we need a more progressive tax system to finance better schools and access to health care, and green technologies that might create new manufacturing jobs, our national discussion has been mired in the old politics.

Bill and Hillary's

Bill and Hillary's 'Stockholm Syndrome'

By Robert Parry
April 14, 2008

As one of the few mainstream Washington journalists who defended the Clintons when they were under often unfair attack in the 1990s, it sometimes pains me to watch how that experience shaped – or misshaped – them in their national political revival a decade later.

The two most distinctive features of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign – and Bill Clinton’s attempts at a supporting role – are a seemingly bottomless pit of self-pity (excavated in part by the right-wing attack machine years ago) and the copycat use of many right-wing tactics to demonize their opponents and critics.

It’s like watching a Democratic mirror image of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove (albeit without all the creative destructive brilliance and with more whining about alleged media bias against individuals, Hillary and Bill Clinton).

Not that the Right didn’t whine over the years. A central theme in the Right’s faux populism was the long-asserted grievance about “liberal media bias.”

That right-wing complaint emerged historically in the 1950s when white Southerners grew angry about what they saw as sympathetic Northern news coverage of Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights protesters.

John McCain, Candidate of the Corporate Media

John McCain is the candidate of the corporate media.

Has anyone read Greenwald’s new book yet?

--------------------

Diary posted by Matt Stoller -

Excerpt:

As Glenn Greenwald has demonstrated in his important book Great American Hypocrites, male Democratic candidates must always be presented as feminine, elite, aristocratic, savage, and untrustworthy, for fear that substantive arguments will actually present the electorate with a choice on larger questions of national direction.

And no conservative is ever held accountable for their activities, no matter how dishonorable.

It really doesn't matter if it's Ann Coulter calling for the assassination of a New York Times reporter or describing John Edwards as a fag, or Soren Dayton being 'disavowed' by the McCain campaign while explicitly continuing to push out anti-Obama right-wing messaging, the conservative machine marches on without fear of consequence.

George Bush has openly admitted that he signed off on torture, along with Condi and the whole senior staff, and yet the media is abuzz with silly arguments about elitism and bitterness and bowling scores.

It's just remarkable. And John McCain can transparently exchange people in his political operation for one another and 'distance' himself from them by swapping his operatives into consulting or marketing shops without fear that he will be unmasked as the deceitful smear artist he clearly is.

Not Voting Is Not The Same As Voting

senator obama not voting
Submitted by mire on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 9:12am.
starvox posted this
well starvox, and firedoglake, i beg to differ
for me not voting on a bullshitt amendment is the next best thing to voting no, makes a statement of sorts either way (doesn't merit my attention)
so profile in courage or not, whatever, it's still a good thing for him

________________________

Not voting is not the same as voting.

Senator Obama did not vote.

My point was to clarify that Obama did not vote on the amendment.

I added the comment from firedoglake -- since the original poster claimed that Obama was taking a stand and emphatically voted No! in Congress. (Did you check out the link to firedoglake? The post also included comments about Clinton‘s actual vote.)

Obama did not take a stand as a leader in Congress on the day of the vote. Obama did not give a great speech in Congress concerning the amendment.

The previous information posted on the blog was inaccurate and had no links.

I would have posted the original content, but I didn't want to embarrass the blogger who made the erroneous statements (complete with memories of Obama’s speech in Congress about his vote and how his words that day clearly distinguished Obama from Clinton).

It did not happen. Senator Obama was not in Congress for this vote. Instead, Obama was campaigning. That was my point.

Now I have no intention of arguing with you about Obama not voting.

I also have no intention of arguing with you over the definition of not voting.

Finally, I would like to think that Obama would have voted Nay if he had not been campaigning, but he did not vote on this amendment.

Senator McCain was the other senator who was not voting on this amendment.

(I also think that McCain would have voted Yea if he had been in Congress. By the way, Senator McCain was a co-sponsor of the amendment -- although he was not voting.)

In comparison, please watch or read what Senator Webb said. Then consider how Obama and McCain did not vote on the amendment.

I am not into bashing any of the candidates. Along with others, I have been taking a blog break from here.

I would rather communicate directly with blog friends and avoid the personal attacks of the bloggers from the Obama and Clinton camps -- who are fighting in the blogosphere now.

The intolerance and senseless attacks are alarming in the so-called progressive blogosphere. (I agree with digby about this.)

For the record, I did not vote for Obama or Clinton. However, I do plan to vote for either one of them in the general election.

The last time that I clarified Obama’s voting record was to post information on Obama’s vote and his statement on the bankruptcy legislation in Congress.

At the time, Obama was criticized on the blog after incorrect information had been posted about his voting record.

In response, I posted information about his actual voting record and his official statement clarifying his position -- along with links to the actual vote.

I am not in the Obama or Clinton camp. I read their policy proposals and analyze both of their positions and votes. I examine their records on the issues.

Ironically, one of my current goals is to help unify the Democratic party after the great Obama and Clinton divide.

How many Obama or Clinton supporters will decide to not vote if their favorite candidate is not the Democratic nominee?

If enough Democratic voters choose not to vote -- John McCain will be the next president.

Not voting is not the same as voting.

I will vote for the Democratic candidate in the general election. Both Clinton and Obama are better than John McCain.

How about some tolerance on the blog?

Berlusconi == Insane Mccain ???

ROME — Silvio Berlusconi, the idiosyncratic billionaire who already dominates much of Italy’s public life, snatched back political power in elections that ended Monday, heading a center-right coalition certain to make him prime minister for a third term.

But with a weak economy and frustration high that Italy has lost ground to the rest of Europe, it was unclear whether Italians voted for Mr. Berlusconi out of affection or, as many experts said, as the least bad choice after the nation weathered two years of inaction from the fractured center-left.

hey boy (i wonder if davis has an escrow account)

Davis apologizes for calling Obama ‘boy’

Rep. Geoff Davis (R-Ky.) has apologized for using the word “boy” to describe Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) at a Republican fundraiser Saturday night in Kentucky.

"I’m gonna tell you something. That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button,” Davis said, according to an audio recording of the event that was obtained by The Hill. The lawmaker told the crowd that he participated in “closed, highly classified national security simulations” with Obama.

The comment, which was first reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader’s blog Pol Watchers, was met by laughter and applause.

In the written apology to Obama, which he personally delivered to his Senate office, Davis wrote “my poor choice of words is regrettable and was in no way meant to impugn you or your integrity. I offer my sincere apology to you and ask for your forgiveness.”

“It’s hard to tell what is more outrageous - Rep. Davis’s condescending and personal attack, or his absurd and offensive claim that Barack Obama is not prepared to defend America,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

Davis also called Obama a “snake oil salesman” whom he considers “unqualified to be president” and then touched on the “bitter” comment that has haunted Obama over the last few days.

“If you go to the most expensive private school in Hawaii and then you go to Columbia University and Harvard Law School, you probably don’t understand normal Americans and I don’t think he does,” Davis said, noting Obama’s comments were recorded at a private fundraiser.

amen. what is scary is that we could easily go the same way with insane mccain. at least we will know where to lay the blame, right at the feet of the clintons.

very somber mood in the press i generally read

for the first time in italian postwar history there will be not one single representative in the house and senate of the left parties: only the right, extreme right and center right are represented

there was a very decent man in the electoral campaign speaking for the people and telling the truth, blowin in the wind, and he got trunced: Bertinotti, an old union man, a true blooded leftist coming out of the anti-fascist sentiment of the fifties and sixties, who was really trying to modernize his message, allied with the greens, speaking for the civil rights of women (reproductive rights being under assault from a renascent catholic church and a nazi pope) immigrants (under assault from the nativist nationalist leghisti or lou dobbs populists just to clarify - who are the real winners of this election) and gays and lesbians right to marry (something that is already being accepted almost everywhere in europe) and heavy industry laborers who continue to die (one died yesterday) because of unsafe conditions in the workplace (mangled by heavy machinery in the thyssen krupp steel factories etc etc

speaking for environment and sane energy policies, and this man got trunced and berlusconi triumphed

is it because of media?

whatever - i am still depressed today and can hardly muster up any caring for the obama hillary question today - too depressed about italy

too many people in my country now denied any representation at all because of stupidity, naivete, ignorance

Belzer won't

good morning lucille, dan

no, italian gov, it's not likely to change soon now - it only changes when it suits the neocons - berlusconi is basically responsible for having the previous gov collapse prematurely after only two years (too complicated to go into the details) but they have now successfully rigged the system to ensure that they will stay in power for at least the 5 years - and none of the groups I mentioned, and any left leaning person in Italy now has any representation at all, as I said only the corporatists and the nativists now have seats in congress

I imagine they the regular people will be disillusioned soon enough and they will probably continue to agitate in the streets, going on strike most probably, but I am not sure how much that will accomplish

anyway, time to shake the blues off and get ready for work

time to shake the blues off

dont!! stay mad..mad enough to make some change! dang that to me too now!

oh and the media

the media is a mess, yeah berlusconi owns 3/4 of them - owns most of the private ones (he's the italian murdoch so to speak) and now will be in charge of the public ones as head of the government

last time he was prime minister he purged all the programs that were critical of him from the public airwaves - there was a backlash the laast two years and he promised he would never do that again, not this time, but who can believe him now?

Food Costs Rising Fastest in 17 Years
NEW YORK — Steve Tarpin can bake a graham cracker crust in his sleep, but explaining why the price for his Key lime pies went from $20 to $25 required mastering a thornier topic: global economics.

He recently wrote a letter to his customers and posted it near the cash register listing the factors _ dairy prices driven higher by conglomerates buying up milk supplies, heat waves in Europe and California, demand from emerging markets and the weak dollar.

The owner of Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies in Brooklyn said he didn't want customers thinking he was "jacking up prices because I have a unique product."

"I have to justify it," he said.

The U.S. is wrestling with the worst food inflation in 17 years, and analysts expect new data due on Wednesday to show it's getting worse. That's putting the squeeze on poor families and forcing bakeries, bagel shops and delis to explain price increases to their customers.

U.S. food prices rose 4 percent in 2007, compared with an average 2.5 percent annual rise for the last 15 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And the agency says 2008 could be worse, with a rise of as much as 4.5 percent.

McCain "Family Recipes" Lifted from the Food Network

What will they call it? Farfallegate? Rosemary Chicken Dome Scandal? Perhaps something with the ubiquitous Rachael Ray in it.

It seems that Cindy McCain, John McCain's perfect, blonde beer-baroness wife is about to find herself painted as the latest example of plagiarism on the campaign trail.

This past Sunday, Lauren Handel, an eagle-eyed attorney from New York, was searching for a specific recipe from Giada DeLaurentis, a chef on the Food Network. Yet whenever she Googled the different ingredients in the recipe, the oddest thing happened: not only did the Food Network's site come up, as expected, but so did John McCain's campaign site.

On a section of McCain's site called "Cindy's Recipes," you can find seven recipes attributed to Cindy McCain, each with the heading "McCain Family Recipe." Ms. Handel quickly realized that some of the "McCain Family Recipes," were in fact, word-for-word copies of recipes on the Food Network site.

Obama said that as president he would indeed ask his new Attorney General and his deputies to "immediately review the information that's already there" and determine if an inquiry is warranted -- but he also tread carefully on the issue, in line with his reputation for seeking to bridge the partisan divide. He worried that such a probe could be spun as "a partisan witch hunt." However, he said that equation changes if there was willful criminality, because "nobody is above the law."

More Than 50 Killed by Car Bombs in Iraq

BAGHDAD — Car bombs ripped through crowded areas at lunch hour in the former Sunni insurgent strongholds of Baqouba and Ramadi on Tuesday as more than 50 people were killed in one of the deadliest days in Iraq in months.

A parked car bomb also targeted a police patrol in central Baghdad, killing four civilians who were passing by and wounding 15 other people, police said.

Nobody claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida and came after weeks of few car bombings or suicide attacks.

The first attack occurred in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, when an explosives-laden car parked in front of a restaurant exploded just before noon across the street from the courthouse and other government offices in the city center.

dam africans dont know shit!

Now, a long-forgotten essay written 43 years ago by Obama's father has surfaced, and its contents reveal much not only about the senior Obama's grasp of economic theory but also the iconoclastic politics that, his son would later write, sent him into the spiral of career disappointment that concluded with his death in 1982 in his native Kenya.

Parts of the article, titled "Problems Facing Our Socialism," have been making the rounds on several small blogs over the past week, but Politico is now reproducing the entire piece in its original form online for the first time.

Iraq qualifies 35 companies for oil deals

WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- Iraq's Oil Ministry has approved 35 companies it will allow to bid for soon-to-be announced tenders to develop oil and gas fields.

The largest oil companies in the world -- ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Conoco Phillips, Chevron -- all qualified, as did firms of a variety of sizes and nationalities.

The announcement Monday on the ministry's Web site is a major move that could bring foreign oil companies en masse into Iraq since the third-largest oil sector in the world was nationalized three decades ago.

It takes place as the ministry attempts to increase oil and gas production as a new law to govern the sector remains in dispute between the central and Kurdistan regional governments.

Seder & Maron

"So, how does Air America clean up the mess, and stop the bleeding? At this point, they really need to hold on to their depleting fan base, now seemingly awash with so many options. This core of listeners have been angered by Air America's antics in the past, with Malloy's firing in 2006, Seder's demotion a year ago, the constant revolving door of shows and talent and now the whole Rhodes fiasco, which they bungled by trying to strong-arm their most-promoted talent. If I was in charge at Air America (and at this rate, I may someday be able to acquire it quite cheap), I would move Maddow to replace Rhodes, bump Lionel to the 6-9P ET slot, and give Seder his old morning shift. Hell, I'd offer Seder and the exiled Marc Maron the chance to team up for the still-vacant morning drive slot (6-9A ET) and tell them to do whatever the hell they want, so long as it's funny. Morning drive on the East Coast is an open field, with Bill Press the only syndicated option currently available..."

28 Killed in Wave of Violence;

Sadr Demands Reinstatement of Sacked Troops
AFP reports:
' A surge of violence killed 28 people in the past 24 hours in Iraq, among them 12 members of the Kurdish peshmerga forces who died in a bomb blast near the Syrian border, officials said on Monday.

The country's north bore the brunt of the violence, with the attack on the [Kurdish] peshmerga troops at the town of Rabiyah, three car bombs exploding in separate incidents in the main city of Mosul, and a suicide bomb attack on a funeral in the town of Tal Afar. . .

The US military announced that two American soldiers were killed on Monday by roadside bombs in separate incidents in Iraq, pushing the toll for the first half of April to 24.'

Advertising $$$

good morning all -

wanted to get this post in before going off to work:

last week someone had posted the contact info on some of AAR's advertisers
I spent hours reading past threads but couldn't find that post (also checked open mics)

I did find several posts from rctowns about advertising dollars are more important to AAR's management than the listening audience's opinions (I'm paraphrasing his[?] ideas)

this is my email to AAR:

Dear Mr.Collin:

I have been listening to Air America Radio since its inception in 2004.
I used to tune in for as many hours as possible, from early morning until late at night, to get informed (and entertained) by the best and brightest talents. Those early years of AAR are legendary, and are now just about gone. If AAR's management won't pay attention to its audience, perhaps the advertisers will.

I don't know if all the emails and petition-signing will help get Sam Seder a five-days-per-week show, but I do think that AAR's advertisers would be concerned about wasting their advertising dollars on a shrinking listener-base.

Sincerely,

Kat [last name]

What Would They Do?

by digby

Obama on torture, rendition and illegal wiretapping today:

What I would want to do is to have my Justice Department and my Attorney General immediately review the information that's already there and to find out are there inquiries that need to be pursued. I can't prejudge that because we don't have access to all the material right now. I think that you are right, if crimes have been committed, they should be investigated.

You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve.

So this is an area where I would want to exercise judgment -- I would want to find out directly from my Attorney General -- having pursued, having looked at what's out there right now -- are there possibilities of genuine crimes as opposed to really bad policies. And I think it's important-- one of the things we've got to figure out in our political culture generally is distinguishing between really dumb policies and policies that rise to the level of criminal activity.

Con't

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."

writing to the advertisers??

If Sam had sufficient advertisers he could be on-air every day. The problem is attracting new advertisers and being able to charge the a sufficient amount of money to make a profit.

Folks donated money to keep Air America broadcasting for the longest time. That's all over. The Marketplace is controlling AAR now.

It's Capitalism..!!

It's the American Way...

Finally someone asked the important question

-Whether an Obama administration would seek to prosecute officials of a former Bush administration on the revelations that they greenlighted torture, or for other potential crimes that took place in the White House. - Philly.com

An angry China is lashing out at its foreign critics

By Tim Johnson | McClatchy Newspapers

BEIJING — Bristling at criticism in the run-up to the Summer Olympics, China is lashing back at its foreign critics _ by name.

Earlier this week, the state Xinhua news agency called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “disgusting.” And on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu lambasted a CNN commentator, Jack Cafferty, for his “vicious” commentary on China.

“We solemnly request that CNN, and Cafferty himself, take back the malicious remarks and apologize to the Chinese people,” Jiang said at a news briefing.

Annie Oakley' changes her tune

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Clinton, who bashed guns eight years ago, will have a very different message for same group on Tuesday.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who has cast herself in the past few days as a champion of gun owners, had a very different message when she spoke eight years ago to the Newspaper Association of America.

“CLINTON TAKES AIM AT GUNS,” said the all-caps headline on the group’s Web site after she told members in May 2000, during her Senate campaign, that “there isn’t a more important task” than passing gun-safety laws.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9594.html

On Tuesday, she'll speak to a luncheon meeting of the same group — with a very different message.

Over the weekend, Clinton sought to capitalize on remarks Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) made about gun owners by casting herself as a Second American champion and reminiscing about how “my dad …. taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl.”

Shooting, she said Saturday, is “part of the culture … part of a way of life” in some rural areas of Pennsylvania, which hold its primary a week from Tuesday.

Clinton was so enthusiastic about her remarks that Obama mocked them on Sunday by saying: “She's running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen, how she VALUES the Second Amendment — she's talkin' like she's Annie Oakley,” the frontier markswoman.

But when she spoke to the newspaper association in 2000, she said that “one of the reasons I am running for the Senate” is that “we need a comprehensive plan to stop gun violence.”

Clinton was running for senator from New York at the time, and her message did not directly contradict what she’s saying now. In the speech, Clinton was talking about handguns, not hunting weapons like shotguns.

Very thoughtful of you!

Thank you..

Dems charge Bush broke law bypassing DoJ confirmation

A controversial lawyer has led a top Justice Department office for the past three years without the approval of the Senate, a scenario that Democrats charge is illegal.

Now the majority party is considering ways to force him from the position.

Steven Bradbury, President Bush’s nominee to head the department’s Office of Legal Counsel, has become a flashpoint in the battle between Senate Democrats and the White House over stalled nominees to fill spots in the administration and the judiciary. Bradbury was first nominated to head the office in June 2005, but his confirmation has stalled in the Senate after it was revealed that he might have played a crucial role in authorizing memos outlining tough interrogation tactics on terrorism detainees.

Even without confirmation, Bradbury continues to serve in the role that provides legal advice to the president and attorney general.

Busted! Of course I had not read the linked article. I make a practice of not commenting on a post that refers to an article that I have not read because A.) it's dumb and B.) it often comes back to bite me on the ass.

And (of course, again) language can be used to deceive.

My only defense for my post is to support the idea that nearly half of comedy is the clever use of language. The other half is using a hammer as a surgical anesthetic.

Some of the country's most prominent Jewish liberals are forming a political action committee and lobbying group aimed at dislodging what they consider the excessive hold of neoconservatives and evangelical Christians on U.S. policy toward Israel.

The group is planning to channel political contributions to favored candidates in perhaps a half-dozen campaigns this fall, the first time an organization focused on Israel has tried to play such a direct role in the political process, according to its organizers.

Organizers said they hope those efforts, coupled with a separate lobbying group that will focus on promoting an Arab-Israeli peace settlement, will fill a void left by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, and other Jewish groups that they contend have tilted to the right in recent years.

I was an inhabitant of dial-up hell for several years. One of the appealing aspects of the old(est) Seder blog was its simple text format. I clearly remember a day or two when color and font and gawd-knows-what-other technical capabilities were enabled (adding nothing of substance to the conversation while experimental hi-jinks ensued). My refresh-the-page wait time increased exponentially.

they so love controlling their media

Jack Cafferty made the comments earlier this month on CNN's political program, The Situation Room.

"We are shocked at and strongly condemn the evil attack by the CNN anchor on the Chinese people," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular news conference.

"Cafferty used the microphone in his hand to slander China and the Chinese people, and seriously violated reporting ethics."

Cafferty said the United States imported Chinese-made "junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food," adding: "They're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years," according to a copy of his comments carried on YouTube.

Clinton attacks Gore to get Obama

HILLARY Clinton has created fractures within her own party after controversially slighting Al Gore and John Kerry while seeking to portray Barack Obama as out-of-touch with the American people.

"The Democratic Party, to be very blunt about it, has been viewed as a party that didn't understand and respect the values and the way of life of so many of our fellow Americans," Senator Clinton said during a forum on faith yesterday.

"We had two very good men and men of faith run for president in 2000 and 2004. But large segments of the electorate concluded that they did not really understand or relate to or frankly respect their ways of life."

The unprovoked attacks on Mr Gore and Senator Kerry came as a British newspaper reported that Mr Gore and former president Jimmy Carter would either privately or publicly appeal to Senator Clinton to pull out of the Democratic primaries and clear the way for Senator Obama to be anointed as the party's candidate for the November presidential election.

Senator Kerry has endorsed Senator Obama, who leads the race.

Mr Carter yesterday said he would not yet endorse a candidate but made it clear his entire family was pressing him to support Senator Obama.

Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright is back in the news this week, as he attacked the media, and specifically Fox News, at a funeral for a Chicago judge.

"Fox News can't understand that. [Bill] O'Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity's stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe," said Wright.

Today on The Live Desk on FNC at 1:50pmET, Hannity responded. "You know what am I supposed to say? I guess its blame the messenger," he said. "Look if you want to be president of the United States of America, the most important job I think its pretty simple and pretty basic that we have to look at your background completely."

Obama 'Gets It' on Trade

Maybe being accused of being an "elitist" is a good thing.

After taking hits from Democratic primary foe Hillary Clinton and presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain for suggesting, somewhat clumsily, that Americans who are suffering economically may turn "bitter," Barack Obama has come back with a speech that goes to the heart of the current crisis.

Speaking on trade policy to the Alliance for American Manufacturing today in Pittsburgh this morning, the Illinois senator said what he has been needing to say for more than a month: He understands that America needs a new approach to trade -- an approach that breaks with those of the Bush and Clinton administrations -- if this country is going to begin to address its many economic challenges.

And he did it in the context of the current debate about elitism.

"Senator Clinton and Senator McCain are singing from the same hymn book, saying that I'm 'out of touch' – an 'elitist' – because I said a lot of folks are bitter about their economic circumstances," Obama explained. "Now it may be that I chose my words badly. It wasn't the first time and it won't be the last. But when I hear my opponents, both of whom have spent decades in Washington, saying I'm out of touch, it's time to cut through their rhetoric and look at the reality."

The rhetoric -- especially Clinton's remake of herself as a populist champion of fair-trade responses that she opposed as the first lady, a senate candidate and a senator -- is designed to suggest that Obama is not in tune with workers who have seen their jobs, their industries and their communities devastated by trade policies that favored Wall Street over Main Street.

McCain indicates he will not support GI Bill.
Despite his claim that he is “a consistent supporter of educational benefits for the men and women of the military,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) indicated yesterday that he will not support the bipartisan 21st Century GI Bill, stating that he is working on his own proposal. McCain has been largely absent on the issue, even though Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) — the bill’s chief sponsor — had been urging McCain “to get on the bill.” Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America has now taken out a full-page ad in a South Carolina newspaper pressuring Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to support the legislation.

“At 39 months in the doghouse,” President Bush has surpassed Harry Truman’s record as “the postwar president to linger longest without majority public approval. Bush hasn’t received majority approval for his work in office in ABC News/Washington Post polls since Jan. 16, 2005 — three years and three months ago. The previous record was Truman’s during his last 38 months in office.”

Right wing columnist tries to blame Dems for mortgage crisis.

the author is full of it. blaming it all on the community reinvestment act is total horsepucky. there is no reason why a bank can't provide reasonable fixed rate mortgages to individuals in "bad" parts of town based on their desire to fix them up and have a place to live. given the availability of fha insurance and other government programs this is a smokescreen to try and shift the blame.

bottom line - he's a typical right wing bullshit artist who won't take responsibility for his actions and beliefs. just one more person who wants to privatize reward and socialize risk.

WaPo: Hillary's attacks are failing

This is news that should lift the hearts of those of us who believe in the better nature of Americans. Hillary's attacks (aka John McCain's attacks) are, for the most part, failing.

Why? For one, there's really nothing to her attacks.

Rep. Mike Doyle (D), an undecided superdelegate who represents Pittsburgh and surrounding towns in the Monongahela Valley, said yesterday that he was not particularly troubled by Obama's comments.

"I don't disagree with a lot of what he said. My dad was a mill worker. My grandfather was a steel mill worker, and when the steel industry collapsed, nobody's family was hurt more than mine," Doyle said. "It's not inaccurate to say a lot of politicians have come through these towns, made a lot of promises and failed to deliver. I thought he was spot-on when he said how people feel."

But the strongest reason is that Obama's campaign is firing back with both barrels.

The senator from Illinois also slipped in a dig: "Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that [it's important not to damage our fellow Democrats], since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote. Senator Clinton may not feel that she can afford to be as constrained."

Obama continued: "I'm sure that Senator Clinton feels like she's doing me a great favor, because she's been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November, and so, it's toughening me up. And I'm getting a run through the paces here."

Ouch.

Firing back with both barrels and yet keeping himself out the mud. That's why he's my candidate. Simply put: Obama will not stand to be swiftboated.
