The Torture Drawings the Pentagon Doesn't Want You to See

On the Monday before last [February 11] a white male came to do the force-feeding. They gave him only ten minutes training, then he did three of the eight men being fed that day, including me. He screwed the tube into my nose, not slowly, and not using lotion. I had flu at the time and my nostril was closed. It made it much harder. I was in the chair. I could barely talk, and my mouth was covered with the mask they put on. I was waving my hands.

"That's very painful!" I eventually said. There were tears streaming down my face. "I am meant to do this to you," the man said, harshly. "If you don't like it, don't go on strike." He would not look me in the eye. He did not look in the least bit ashamed. He never said sorry, or paused when I was in pain. I almost thought he seemed happy that he was doing it.

They used my feeding tube for another man last Monday...

Boobie Bouncin Day !!

I just listened to the Maron segment with Randi, excellent interview. I was so mad at Larry King for cutting Randi off after only 3 minutes !!!! I hate king anyway so I sat through his sex/religion laden show waiting for Randi only to have her get cut off by some other BS "breaking news".

I missed what happened with Sam yesterday, I had walked out of the room and only caught a bit of it after he got the IM news apparently. How did a bunch of kindergarten babies get to be in charge of AAR?

Economy has yet to hit bottom.
According to a new Wall Street Journal forecasting survey, by a 3-to-1 ratio, economists say “the economy is in a recession, and almost three-quarters [say] the economy hasn’t yet hit bottom.” In the poll, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke received a grade of 78 out of 100, down from “the 92 he scored in September.” Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s “grade dropped slightly — to 73 from 74 in February.”

I'm thinking that Randi

took her blog and will reopen it when she starts on Monday. I believe it was hers from Florida days. Probably doing work on it now to have it ready. She, or whomever does the work on her blog, has to remove all the AAR references on it.

I think AAR took the link down, but Randi took the blog down.

playing chicken with the chimp

its bad enough that we have to worry about our trigger happy chimp picking another fight we don't need or can't afford, now this news via cnn:

DJ reports a small U.S. Navy craft, the U.S.S. Typhoon, was approached by three small Iranian boats in the Persian Gulf Thursday night, Cable News Network reported. Citing a U.S. official, CNN reported that the Iranians were taunting and maneuvered their boats within 200 yards of the Navy vessel. Crew onboard the Typhoon fired a warning flare, according to CNN, and the Iranian boats eventually turned away.

screw larry king and his breaking news

i don't have cable because I hate all the bs coming from cnn and fox and all of them really, but yesterday was yearning for this randi thing that had been announced, so I went to the gym (something I am generally loath to do, not an exercise fan here!) and the big screens in front of the threadmills they were all showing some sport events or some other bs, so just to make sure I could watch cnn at 8pm I got hold of one of those individual bikes with a screen on them and started biking...larry king goes on and I'm already starting to get a little sweaty,he goes on and on with his sex religion bs, god i thought, i am so glad I never watch this bs, so he went on and on for about half an hour then glenn beck went on (handsome my ass, he's disgusting) more bs from cnn and the commercials, all this while I had to keep spinning my legs byking because when I slowed down or paused the screen went blank, so I was almost breathless by the time randi finally went on, for THREE MINUTES give me a break! I was so mad with Larry king announcing his breaking news I jumped off the bike and proceeded to the locker room to wipe off my sweat, never did find out wath the breaking news was but I expect it was probably more of the same sexual porno innuendos of earlier showing

felt good about myself though, I had a good workout!

Boston newsman protests Bill O’Reilly’s Emmy Award.»

billoBarry Nolan, a local Boston news reporter, is mounting a campaign to protest the fact that Bill O’Reilly will be awarded an Emmy Award by the Boston/New England Chapter next month. Nolan insists that O’Reilly is “a mental case” who shouldn’t be held up as an example of journalistic integrity:

“I am appalled, just appalled,” Nolan told the Track. “He inflates and constantly mangles the truth…and his frequent target is the ‘left-leaning’ media - the ones who do report the news fairly. And those are the same people who will be sitting in the room honoring him.” […]

“I hope people will express their displeasure to the board of governors and they’ll rescind their decision,” he said. “It’s morally unacceptable.”

Nolan plans to attend the May 10 ceremony, and he’s invited Keith Olbermann as his date.

I missed everything yesterday!

Ugh! I had a 14 hour day at work yesterday and missed *everything* after 2pm except what I could get from headlines. I am glad Sam is in today. I'll definitely be listening.

How do folks feel about the Belzer thing? I mean, I've seen him on Real Time and heard him a few times on some of the AAR shows, but am I the only one feeling like he's somewhat not quite up to the task?

Why not just give Sam that time slot now???????

Larry King's breaking news

They captured the Marine who supposedly killed his Marine, pregnant girlfriend and burried her in his yard. But the funny thing is that before going to Breaking News, CNN had a commercial.

American Airlines Cancels Another 595 Flights Friday Amid Wiring Inspections on Its MD-80 Jets

American Airlines has canceled 595 more flights, bringing this week's total to nearly 3,100 as inspections continue on the wiring of its MD-80 jets.

Fort Worth-based American on Friday announced the latest cancellations and that it expected to operate about half of its MD-80 schedule through much of the day.

Sorry Lucille

How Much Airtime is AAR Losing

I think this is the real question. Even if AAR gave the spot to Sam, what good is it if all the stations air Randi instead? Sure we can stream and podcast but this is still primarily about traditional radio and there are only so many hours of broadcast per station a day.

For Lucille

...said John Manzo, CEO of Nova M...

According to Nova M, many of Rhodes' former affiliates are picking up the show.

"Many affiliates came in one big block, namely the Clear Channel stations and another slew committed after the deal was official," said John Manzo, CEO of Nova M. "I can't recall getting so much industry support for a single move ever before."

Other than what happened with Grover

Flight cancellations

Yeah, Lucille, that's what we're worried about.

Not flying with American; but trying to get a flight in the next month when all those canceled flights will need to be re-assigned.

The ripple effect could last weeks.

Next month, getting an international flight may be easier, but these problems are liable to drive the price up too high for me to go along...

he is only a fill in host for next week

Email I sent to AAR today

Hello, I am writing in support of putting Sam on permanently in place of Randi, or mornings 6-9 in place of the Randi rerun. I, & his many other listeners have been waiting for a year now to get him back on a daily program. Now that AAR has TWO open slots he should certainly be put in one of them. We are not interested in listening to celebrities. We are not interested in reruns every morning 6-9. We just want your best host put back on the air, 5 days a week, where he belongs. Please listen to Al Franken, Bobby Kennedy Jr, David Bender, & many others who strongly feel that Sam should be back on 5 days. Yesterday he had over 46000 viewers watching his show live on his website. We are out here & we are many. We will support & follow Sam wherever he ends up.
Hopefully AAR will be smart enough to keep him there.
Thank you

I don't know if it will do any good, but it can't hurt. Let's keep the phone calls & emails coming for Sam!

MARKETWATCH FIRST TAKE
GE to sell NBC? Let the speculation begin
Commentary: Conglomerate could part with a non-core asset
By MarketWatch
Last update: 11:12 a.m. EDT April 11, 2008

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- To followers of General Electric Co., the NBC television network has always resembled a shirttail sticking out of a tuxedo. It doesn't fit the picture.

GE) reporting abysmal earnings -- net income fell 5.8% on weakness in the financial-services businesses -- discouraged investors will demand that the conglomerate do something serious to win back their confidence. GE must show it can act decisively.

That's why I think GE will begin seeking offers for its stake in NBC Universal. It would fetch billions of dollars at a time when GE could use the dough -- and the faith of skeptical shareholders. GE's stock plunged more than 10%, a definite sign that the company is on shakier ground now than it has been since former Chief Executive Jack Welch, departed several years ago.

NBC Universal, which is 80% owned by GE and 20% owned by Vivendi (FR:012777: news, chart, profile) , will be a hot company this year, thanks to the Beijing Olympics. Even the recent furor over the fate of the Olympic torch serves to help NBC -- controversy attracts publicity and publicity brings in viewers. Even non-sports fans will have a bigger awareness of the Beijing Games now.

WOW indeed Lucy.

I have a good friend who is an Air Frame Maintenance Supervisor for one of the smaller airlines. The word I am getting is this is a coordinated effort by the Majors to strike back at the FAA for fines and stricter enforcement of maintenance schedules. They are canceling flights that are not profitable enough to pay for the fuel costs and pulling them off the line under the guise of mandatory inspections. They are killing two birds with one stone by stranding their customers to save a buck and the FAA is taking the backlash, which they believe will result in looser inspection enforcement.

This friend of mine has worked at several different airlines and say he keeps a little black book with the numbers of airplanes he will absolutely not fly on because of past maintenance issues.

Scary shit.

Delta is awful.

I know what you mean, Lucille.

We got stuck in the second big cancellation flurry at the New York airports. What a horror story. They made us wait 6 hours, (3 on the plane) just to cancel everything at 1:30am...then they said 'good luck' with a hotel, or lodging, or other flights...

We got home about 24 hours later.

mire, re: umms and ahhhs ...

> with all his mispronounciations ... love him like he is,
> full of charm and quirks and wisdom

Well said, and agreed. I love Sam because he sounds like one of us, struggling to comprehend the the surreal experience in the last 7 years. The MSM pundits all have smooth delivery but I wouldn't trust 'em to hold my place in line at the theater concession stand, let alone for an honest assessment of day-to-day political happenings.

Sam is truth, with jokes. ;)

I disagree

Many of the flights for AA that are cancelled are very profitable. In fact they begged the FAA to let the planes fly as is and do a rolling inspection. The FAA said no.

then they said 'good luck'

they were polite now were they not?...HAHAHA

Highly placed sources said a handful of top advisers signed off on how the CIA would interrogate top al Qaeda suspects — whether they would be slapped, pushed, deprived of sleep or subjected to simulated drowning, called waterboarding.

The high-level discussions about these “enhanced interrogation techniques” were so detailed, these sources said, some of the interrogation sessions were almost choreographed — down to the number of times CIA agents could use a specific tactic.

HOUSTON (AP) - Exxon Mobil gave chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson an 18% raise to $21.7 million. That's according to an analysis of a proxy statement filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Irving-based Exxon Mobil's $40 billion profit last year again broke the record for a U.S. company. Tillerson has held the top job at the oil giant since 2006.

The 56-year-old executive received a salary of $1.8 million and a $3.4 million bonus in 2007. The company boosted Tillerson's salary to $1.9 million on January 1st.

I don't doubt they are canceling flights for overdue inspection

but I also do not doubt many of those cancellations are done to consolidate under booked flights. Airlines do that all the time. Even without all this recent pressure from the FAA.

With fuel prices so high their, margins are way down, even with the surcharges.

You're the man!

Damn Sam. AA should give you combat pay for this week.

torture

The last thing I notice before I am hooded is that I’m shackled to the floor of a military cargo plane. I hear it take off. Or land. I can’t tell. A man shouts, “Shut up!” and I hear a violent blow, but I don’t feel anything. Finally, sunlight seeps through the fabric of my hood. I hear footsteps on gravel. Are they mine? Everything goes black again. Next thing I know, I’m on my knees on the floor of an outdoor jail cell in Guantánamo Bay. I’m given an orange jumpsuit to put on. Watching me from behind the chicken wire are two callipygian women who are also in orange jumpsuits. One is a brunette. The other’s hair is fluorescent blue.

“How does it feel?” the brunette asks me. I’m pretty comfortable, I want to say. I had a nice breakfast not too long ago, and now I’m playing on my computer in a well-heated apartment, marveling at how much this character looks like me, and trying to make out your curves beneath your orange onesie. But that’s not what she wants to hear.

Signed up in support of Sam

I've buzzed around on the Sam Seder comments page for a while now, and finally thought I'd sign up and say a few words about him.

I originally used to listen to AAR occasionally while doing homework or killing some time before going out. I'd stream it and feel a little guilty about putting weird left wing ideas into my head, but the ideas were different and refreshing, so I figured I'd listen anyway.

Then Katrina hit, and I heard Sam's empassioned rants about the victims, government malfeasence, the Iraq war draining our national guard resources, and everything else. It was then that I got hooked on this radio network. After listening to Sam at night, I went to airamericaplace.com and downloaded his and rachel maddow's show so I could listen at work. Then I signed up for premium once they started charging for podcasts.

To throw Sam under the bus like this, and that is EXACTLY what they are doing time and time again, is so damn foolish. His measured passion is exactly the voice the progressive movement has needed, and he's getting the shaft time and again.

Every now and then when I really need to put the world and society in general back into perspective, I go back to August 2005 and download an episode of the Majority Report to remember what it sounded like to hear conservative ideas crash and crumble like waves against the sides of buildings in New Orleans. I want Sam to be around in the future to keep that perspective alive, and help keep us away from the mean, cruel culture the conservatives seem to want for us.

Colombia Trade Fight is a Human Rights Test

The Colombia Free Trade Agreement is best summed up as a proposal to formalize U.S. support for the assassination of labor union organizers by death squads, impoverishment of workers and the undermining of farming operations that will leave more landless peasants with no alternative but to immigrate to the United States seeking work.

The Wisconsin-based Colombia Support Network, which has led the campaigning by U.S. activists to support human rights in that South American country, says without equivocation that the Colombia FTA "would solely benefit US transnational companies."

Conservatives boo new congresswoman’s Iraq remarks.
Yesterday, Jackie Speier was sworn in as Congress’s newest Democratic member from California, succeeding the deceased Tom Lantos. During her opening speech, Speier was loudly booed by House conservatives when she began speaking about Iraq. “The process to bring the troops home must begin immediately,” she said. “The President wants to stay the course, and a man who wants to replace him suggests we could be in Iraq for 100 years.”

A Newer New Deal Dealing

Bringing the White Working Class Into the Progressive Majority
By Robert Borosage

Let me offer a simple set of propositions.

1. Conservatism has failed—and conservatives, while they cannot admit it, understand that. You’ve heard this before, but it is important to repeat it. The failure is not simply that of clueless George. Conservatism failed not because the Bush administration was incompetent, although incompetence has been its hallmark. It failed not because Bush and the DeLay Congress were corrupt, although corruption has been pervasive. Conservatism failed because it is wrong. Wrong about the world. Wrong about the economy. Wrong about the society.

Its imperial and military fantasies led directly to Iraq, surely the worst foreign policy debacle since Vietnam. Its market fundamentalism generated Gilded Age inequality, a Depression-era financial crisis, stagnant wages and rising insecurity, and left America the world’s largest debtor, dependent on the kindness of strangers. Their celebration of deregulation and scorn for government ended up poisoning our kids, with uninspected toxic toys and diseased lunch-room foods.

2. We are headed into not simply a change election, but an election that has the potential to mark a sea change, the end of the conservative era that Reagan launched in 1980 and the beginning of a new era of progressive reform. The election will take place in the midst of an unpopular war and a recession, with over three-fourths of the country looking for a dramatic change in course. Democrats will surely pick up seats in both the House and the Senate.

Democrats know how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But the potential is there for an election that changes our course.

3. A new progressive majority is forming. You can see it in the Democratic victories in 2006; you can see it in the astounding turnout in Democratic primaries in 2008: young people turning out in unprecedented numbers; Latinos doubling their share of the primary vote; African Americans and single women raising their participation.

4. A key test of the viability of a new coalition will depend on the votes of the white working class, defined as white workers with less than a college education, still about half of the voting population. This was the heart of the Roosevelt coalition. And they are now the heart of the conservative coalition that dominated our politics over the last 30 years.

eya EB!

this election still rigged six ways from sunday.

One more Sam Seder Show

to look forward to -- but if AAR offers Sam a slot to replace Randi, that puts Sam in a moral quandary, no? One more stone in the burden of this bad week... But we need Sam's passion and his SMARTS out there.

Hillary does Philly

Barack Obama may lose support in Philadelphia over 'street money.'
Flush with payments from well-funded campaigns, the ward leaders and Democratic Party bosses typically spread out the cash in the days before the election, handing $10, $20 and $50 bills to the foot soldiers and loyalists who make up the party's workforce.

It is all legal -- but Obama's people are telling the local bosses he won't pay.

Obama's posture confounds neighborhood political leaders sympathetic to his cause. They caution that if the senator from Illinois withholds money that gubernatorial, mayoral and presidential candidates have willingly paid out for decades, there could be defections to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. And the Clinton campaign, in contrast, will oblige in forking over the money, these ward leaders predict.

AAR

sometimes reality sucks

Hi SJ

What?! You don't like our Fourth Reich?!

Will the trains run on time?

what happened to her?

I stopped listening to Thom

I stopped listening to Thom Hartmann a while back when he had Ralph Nader on his program and was going easy on Nader. With all the shenanigns going on I looked up the owner of AAR and he was good friends with Nader for many years. Was Nader being forced upon the radio hosts and were the radio hosts told to lob softballs at Nader?

I really know only what the average listener knows about broadcasting but the one thing I do know is that integrity is a very valuable thing. It is something that takes a long time to acquire yet can be lost nearly overnight. AAR is losing what little integrity it has. I can no longer trust that the on-air hosts aren't being jerked around, that their words are not 100% their own and that they're being told to sell something they don't believe in.

Nader

I don't know I think Thom likes Nader. Right when Nader announced he was running again I never really heard Thom say anything bad about it...but that doesn't mean he didn't.

Al-Sadr blames US for aide's

Al-Sadr blames US for aide's death

By SAMEER N. YACOUB, Associated Press Writer 22 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has blamed the United States and the Iraqi government for the death of a senior aide in the holy city of Najaf.

The cleric's office issued a statement in which al-Sadr promises he won't "forget this precious blood" but he urges his followers to "be patient."

Friday's statement comes hours after Riyadh al-Nouri was gunned down as he drove home after attending prayers. Al-Nouri was the director of al-Sadr's office in Najaf.

Al-Sadr accuses "the hands of the occupiers and their tails" of being responsible for the attack. The terms are often used by the Sadrists to describe the United States and the Iraqi government that it supports.

============================================================

Key Words: "be patient", which means "we'll get revenge when the time is ripe."

Yes Pebbles

"moving Lionel to RR spot & Sam to his old spot which would work out beautifully!!"

That would be easier on the conscience -- but I'm not holding my breath.

Dangerous animal virus on US mainland?

By LARRY MARGASAK, Associated Press Writer Fri Apr 11, 6:34 AM ET

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is likely to move its research on one of the most contagious animal diseases from an isolated island laboratory to the U.S. mainland near herds of livestock, raising concerns about a catastrophic outbreak.

Skeptical Democrats in Congress are demanding to see internal documents they believe highlight the risks and consequences of the decision. An epidemic of the disease, foot and mouth, which only affects animals, could devastate the livestock industry.

One such government report, produced last year and already turned over to lawmakers by the Homeland Security Department, combined commercial satellite images and federal farm data to show the proximity to livestock herds of locations that have been considered for the new lab. "Would an accidental laboratory release at these locations have the potential to affect nearby livestock?" asked the nine-page document. It did not directly answer the question.

A simulated outbreak of the disease — part of an earlier U.S. government exercise called "Crimson Sky" — ended with fictional riots in the streets after the simulation's National Guardsmen were ordered to kill tens of millions of farm animals, so many that troops ran out of bullets. In the exercise, the government said it would have been forced to dig a ditch in Kansas 25 miles long to bury carcasses. In the simulation, protests broke out in some cities amid food shortages.

"It was a mess," said Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who portrayed the president in the 2002 exercise. Now, like other lawmakers from the states under consideration, Roberts supports moving the government's new lab to his state. Manhattan, Kan., is one of five mainland locations under consideration. "It will mean jobs" and spur research and development, he says.

Cheney Calls the Rev. Wright's Comments 'Appalling'

ABC News' Jon Garcia reports: Vice President Dick Cheney made a quick appearance on Sean Hannity's radio show, where he used some very strong words to condemn the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barak Obama's former pastor.

"I thought some of the things he said were absolutely appalling," Cheney told the conservative talk show host. "And, you know, I haven't gotten into the business of trying to judge how Sen. Obama dealt with it, or didn't deal with it, but I really -- I think, like most Americans, I was stunned at what the reverend was preaching in his church and then putting up on his Web site."

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/04/cheney-calls-re.html

i cannot believe how quick i got turned onto AAR

and just how quick i am now turned off!!

and give Sam that spot

2 hours? NAH!!

Rachel Show is Three Hours

However, the third hour is usually David Bender and only a few stations carry the third hour.

what the reverend was preaching in his church

and what is the reverend of Shell/Chevron/BP's name again?

I like the idea

of putting lionel on at 3 and Sam back in his old spot! I like the idea of taking lionel off completely.

I thought Sam

switched to the earlier show (albeit briefly) so he could have more time with Myla.

If so, an evening timeslot wouldn't be optimum.

BJs for AIPAC

Obama, Contrary to Carter, Draws the Line at Meeting with Hamas
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: President Jimmy Carter is heading to Syria next week and is slated to meet with Hamas representatives.

This presents a unique situation for presidential candidate Barack Obama – who is well documents saying he'd meet with America's "friends and enemies" if he were President, one difference he has with Senator Clinton.

But Obama draws the line at meeting with Hamas.

In a statement issued today by Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki, the Senator does not agree with Carter sitting down with Hamas, "Senator Obama does not agree with President Carter's decision to go forward with this meeting because he does not support negotiations with Hamas until they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist, and abide by past agreements. As President, Obama will negotiate directly with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas."

Oakland...no matter what we want to hear Sam M-F. It's a real shame he isn't on daily.

Sam's Choice?

I don't think any of the programming changes at AAR had anything to do with Sam's choice.

Senator Obama does not agree

i was so pissed off when i heard that yesterday, still am! you know he used to speak up and go to Palestinian meetings all the time before he started running for the presidency...thats when his tune changed....word BJ's for AIPAC you damn skippy!

Not kidding. I came home yesterday and my internet tubes were pinned down in the yard by a giant tree limb. Wires yanked right out of the box on hte side of the house. No internet tubes for me for a few days. Last night, too busy having a birthday to go to the library to blog.

No time to check the tubes at work today either (and I probably shouldn't be blogging at work)

Despite all the intoxicating temptations of Brazil I´m managing to live a life that is more than just indulging in the pleasures one can easily get sucked into here. But I did manage to get laid by a guy who does not speak a word of Inglez. I´m convinced that if we were able to communicate, I probably would have talked my way out as I usually do relying too much on being intellectual stimulation to break the ice physically.

I have to go the bus is about to leave, its an 8 hour journey.

US Dems Unlikely To Copy

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Leftist lawmakers who seized both chambers of Mexico's Congress said Friday they will not move until winning a national debate on an oil reform bill backed by President Felipe Calderon.

Legislators from the Democratic Revolution Party and two minor parties stormed the podiums of both the Senate and the lower house of Congress on Thursday to protest the bill, which they say would open the door to selling off parts of the state-run industry.

A small group of lawmakers spent the night there in blankets and sleeping bags and took turns guarding the podiums, which were draped in signs accusing Calderon of trying to privatize the industry. Mexico's oil reserves were nationalized in 1938.

as we get closer to the elections...

the Democratic party is rushing toward the center. Not surprisingly, AAR is moving the same direction, purging the furthest left hosts.

And, once again, I feel left behind. Discarded as if voters like myself are a scraps on the cutting room floor. Altered remnants of some discarded project forgotten up on long ago.

As if I represent some tiny percentage not worthy of consideration.

Hello

yay Maron!!!

dave, funny you mentioning the majority report show of August 05

i remember that particular show the way that some people remember the kennedy assassination, i remember exactly where i was and what i was doing that day. I was a Katrina refugee, having left New Orleans a couple of days before, and shacking at my daughter's house in NY, using her computer to catch up with the news - at that point i was kind of a fan of the majority report but really only addicted to malloy; had heard maybe only a couple of the shows with jeanine and had no idea what either of them looked like, just their voices and conjured some mental image of them. Sam with his fast talk, sputtering and nervous tone, I thought it was a weird voice for a radio guy, none of the required polish; but that particular broadcast, talking about bush and rice and brownie's response to katrina brought tears to my eyes and rage to my heart, something that not even the endless cnn loops and horrible images had managed to do - I was hooked from that day on and still have a mp3 of that show, a classic!
