Understood.but if you had had the sammy cam on you would have seen exactly what i was talking about.Sam heard through a sammy cam blogger that Richard Belzer was filling in fo Randi all next week and freaked out,in a good way, and stormed out of the studio shouting some wonderfully choice words and headed on down the hall to speak to the management.When he re-entered the door he was yelling very lodly at someone in the hallway and was hyperventialinting and it was a miracle that he was able to get through the next segment.

According to the stat counter in the lower left side of the sammy cam 46,000 people were watching the sammy cam today.

Multiply that by 100 times for regular radio listeners and you see he is not small time.

My point is that if we all gave sam one dollar a month to do his own show from upstate new york(his home) he would make far more than he's making now and would be able to provide for his wonderful family.
Do the math.one dollar a month from all of us is a small price to pay for 60 hours of sammy.

One last thought today:FUCK all AAR has done to all of their hosts and to all of us.

Both of the local affiliates I stream from (the MIC 92.1 in Madison and WCPT in Chicago) are looking for comments on whether to continue with AAR programming in Randi's old time slot or pick up Randi on NovaM. Since it is clear that AAR is not listening to us, I suggest that we all email any affiliate you stream from and tell them we are not interested in listening to anyone other than Sam filling in for Randi, and therefore if the choice is between Randi and someone other than Sam, we vote for Randi. If AAR loses a lot of its local affiliates, that is something that will impact the bottom line.

So when the nation’s number one listened-to progressive talk radio host, Randi Rhodes, got the Speech Cops in an uproar recently for using one of those words - in combination with others and about a presidential candidate and a former vice presidential candidate - at an event for a San Francisco radio station, she had my sympathy immediately.

Not for the content of what she said - it was a fairly cheap, though crowd-pleasing comedy routine - but because the liberal censorship lobby was out for her head.

Those that wanted Air America to then banish Rhodes from the airwaves were never really coherent about what she said that merited such censorship for words said off the air. Some didn’t like Rhodes referring to a politician as a prostitute, except with a word that began with the letter W. Others said while it would have been fine for Rhodes to use that word about a male politician, using it against Senator Clinton and former US Rep. Geraldine Ferraro was “sexist.” (When it was, often, men giving such instruction about what a woman should be allowed to say about other women, I thought that was, well, paternalistic.) Others thought that in combination with the F-word, that’s what made it go “too far.”

But what was really going on was - once again - some “liberals” showing their true colors as authoritarians that want access to the airwaves to be closed off to anybody they don’t like or agree with. They’re as bad as the right-wing would-be censors. In the end, democracy loses every time any voice is censored.

And the Speech Cops won. Or so they thought. The “liberal talk radio network” Air America - which, with the exception of Rhodes’ program has remained in the ratings basement for all four years of its existence, in large part because of its aversion to authentic controversy and its attempt to make its hosts fight the king but restricting themselves to the King’s English - caved to the authoritarians and suspended Rhodes from the airwaves.

Rhodes has now turned the tables and, according to this announcement from Nova M Radio, has left Air America to join Nova M.

Nova M Radio was founded by Sheldon and Anita Drobny - the visionaries that founded Air America only to see their vision pushed out by other partners - and is based in Phoenix, Arizona. With the addition of Randi Rhodes, it will not take Nova M long to surpass Air America in reach, in number of affiliates, and listeners nationwide. You heard it here first.

Because Rhodes - unlike almost every other voice that Air America has put on the air - had a background in daily AM talk radio. It’s her genre. And she knows that controversy - and, yes, offending some people and causing them to overreact - is one of the basic building blocks of good talk radio.

As I speculated in the comments section the other day, my first thought was that Rhodes - reportedly unhappy with Air America, looking to move to Nova M, where her longtime producer John Manzo had been hired away to last Summer and is now the CEO there - knew exactly what she was doing: Get the liberal Speech Cops whipped into a tizzy and calling for her head, provoke Air America to react predictably with a suspension, and then have all the legal justification she needed to get out of her contract there and finally join Nova M.

Well played, Randi. Good luck to you and Nova M in the new venture. And a special thanks to your predictable opponents that fell for it and helped you to make that transition!

The South American leaders agreed to create a high-level commission to study the idea of forming a continent-wide community similar to the European Union. This is the presidents and envoys of major nations, and there was the two-day summit of what's called the South American Community of Nations, hosted by Evo Morales in Cochabamba, the president of Bolivia. The leaders agreed to form a study group to look at the possibility of creating a continent-wide union and even a South American parliament. The result, according to the AP report, left fiery Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, long an agitator for the region, taking a greater role on the world stage, pleased, but impatient. It goes on to say that the discussion over South American unity will continue later this month, when MERCOSUR, the South American trading bloc, has its regular meeting that will include leaders from Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Paraguay and Uruguay.

They have some amazing advertisers. Not just the women owners of Two Men and a truck, and 76 mortgage, and the coffee shop and the dentist that fixed Randi's teeth.

There are some people that only respect those who put them in their place. House Democrats defeat Colombia free-trade deal

WASHINGTON — A free-trade agreement with Colombia got swept away by Democratic presidential politics and concerns over domestic economic woes, with the House of Representatives handing the Bush administration a stinging defeat Thursday on a deal that had been touted as crucial to U.S. interests.

The 224-195 vote throws the Colombia free-trade agreement into uncertainty, with only a faint hope that the deal could be voted on after the presidential election in November and before the new president takes over in January.

Only 10 Democrats joined 185 Republicans in opposing the move.

I went out and bought an xm radio on March 30th, 2004, and have listened to marc mark and sue ellicott; lizz winstead rachel and chuck d; held my nose and listened to al franken (who will 'go for the laugh' every time, no matter how deadly serious or important the topic), laura flanders, rfk jr and the papp, mike malloy, thom hartmann... and randi rhodes - the most perspicacious host of them all.

the ability to stay on target - and today, that's the horror that is the congressional hearings - despite the attractive nuisance that is aar's internal politics - is the true measure of the service that these people provide.

sam was quite forthcoming with the fact that he was going to take calls on the 'randi quits!' furor, because he was occupying randi's time-slot. he saw that as a responsibility, and i can respect that.

i doubt that marc will go over the same ground tonight on malloy's show - i hope he doesn't - because it does us all a disservice. the big story is the breaking down of the pernicious lie that is the cheney administration.

watching this tragedy unfold. :(

Not only does Rachel not get knocked off message often in any case, she has been broadcasting from Boulder, CO all week so she's probably barely aware of what's been going on. She's been participating in a conference out there, and gave a speech today.

know what talk radio is for. We, or at least AAR don't. It isn't not about facts. It is about getting us fired up and ready for the barricades. We don't Thom and Rachael. We need bomb-throwers like the Rev. Wright to push the envelope. Oddly, Ed, of all people, gets this. When he called McCain a "war-monger" he was doing the dirty work that liberal talkers should be doing daily. They fight in the streets, so our candidates don't have to.
All of us can read. We don't need history lessons from Thom. We need talk-radio to prepare us for civil war with the right, and more importantly corportism. Corportism is facism and they have all the power. We need to take it back be any means possible. If our media tells the truth fine, but its main job should be mobilizing us to fight. If that means we have to go to short-wave or the internet so be it.

Intellectually that sounds good.

But, this feels personal.

I remember when Marc was told they would not renew his contract Sam got up early and went in the studio to give him support.

Shelly and Anita Drobny were among the first casualties of the AAR launch, forced out when the financial middleman bailed on them.

In the interim, they learned a few things always to remember when you're starting a new network up. First, TRUST NO ONE and second, if you don't have a radio station you don't have a network.

THIS IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH AAR. These people are not in the RADIO business. They are in the SYNDICATION business, and the two don't necessarily mesh. It's also the reason that Sam Seder will never be the star personality that we all know he can be, if only he had a larger platform.

So you know that the TALENT is there, and you know that the MARKET is there. And, if you build slowly, forging a relationship with local advertisers (AM radio is a uniquely LOCAL medium) and you make sure that you have the one personality that can make or break the network. In NovaM's case, it was Mike Malloy.

Confession: I am a HUGE Mike Malloy fan. We Malloy fans are a breed apart. We HOWLED at the shortsightedness of his firing and emailed everyone and anyone involved with Air America. We bitched, we moaned, stamped our feet and held our breath and finally got the attention of the Drobnys, who were in the process of buying a very low wattage Phoenix AM station. From this, and in San Diego when KLSD later went to the ESPN format, the idea of an almost totally web-based network startup hit the air/web on October 30, 2006.

NovaM has grown to include affiliates in 14 of the 15 largest radio markets in America, including LA, SF and Chicago. Much of its programming, including the entire Mike Malloy Show is also on Sirius LEFT 146.

Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I am a founding member of the NovaM Radio network.

personally, i shrink from hartmann's intellectual, 'academic', and didactic style - he even lectures at the guests who wrote the book they're discussing - but despite his 'style', he gets the information out.

even that hollywood wannabe david bender has something to contribute. even ed schultz gets the message across to people who don't have a problem with rush limpbaugh.

so, while it's 'personal' - it's also important to keep our eye on the prize - personal freedom.

i get stephanie miller on local am radio, but i subscribe to her online stream and podcast service, because i want her to stay on the air. i don't love the show, but i love that local folks who wouldn't tolerate real liberal radio do love the show.

i think we need to have a way to subscribe directly to the hosts' shows, too.

can't do it with broadcast, cable, or even satellite radio, not when there are commercial interests intervening.

but give marc maron, sam seder, or whomever, a dollar a day to maintain big bandwidth websites, and we just changed the world.

Was on for less than 5 minutes - She said it was about the fact that new management at AAR didn't like the fact that they couldnt fire her based on her contract. They wanted to amend her contract - She said NO. And then 2 weeks after her stand up in San Fran - the snipped stand up gets posted and that gets used to suspend her. Larry showed the clips - confirmed that she was doing standup - HE agreed that there was no reason for her to be suspended...and then had to say we have to go because of the breaking news - but we will have you back next week BUT of course being LARRY KING - got the plug in for her being on NOVA M starting next Monday.

OK this is what I'm gathering happened, I don't really know fersure all the background stuff so i could be off base here but this is what i think happened.
aar informed sam about randi leaving and it seems that they then told him thats all they know and had NO info on what would happen with her time slot then after the first hour or so (i think) he reads an IM (?) that Richard Belzer is gonna be doing randi's time slot next week. he jumps out of his chair says a few choice words turns off his mike and i 'm thinkin he was cussing and yelling big time- leaves the room altogether
comes back fuming i mean fuming! and then goes back on air as if nothing happened (total class act, total)Then later announces to everyone on air that richard belzer would be doing randi's show next week.there was prob more that others could add. but thats a minimalist view of todays events

I know about Manzo - he is now CEO of NovaM - he was Randi's long time producer starting in Florida and only stayed as long as he did with her in NY at AAR FOR her...and finally left when the NOVA M Programming opportunity came up - she couldnt stop him from going - she was glad he was for him.
I saw the Sammy Cam - and I don't know who the balding guy was but I doubt it was Manzo because I can't see AAR management allowing him into the building - he is probably too busy getting things ready for NovaM to be able to handle Randi's fanbase jumping onto their servers AND of course getting a website set up for her since AAR pulled hers down...

Rhodes has apparently already been picked up by Nova M Radio, which released a statement saying Rhodes would be nationally syndicated on the station starting Monday.

But he disputed Green’s account of her resignation. He said Rhodes was willing to apologize, but that Air America wanted her to waive a provision in her contract that said she could leave any time over the next year, before they would let her back on air. She refused.

“It had nothing to do with the brouhaha from last week. It had nothing to do with an apology,” Gaulin said.

But Maron (subbing for Malloy this week) has indicated that radio might not be what he wants to do right now. Definately keep Farias He could be the next Seder.

Actually I work part time but make lots per hour(therapist)....they are getting on their feet and will probably be moving out in 6 months or so. I love it though having my grandbaby in the house and my hubby works his ass off...mail carrier... we all get by...and are happy...

I think the whole Clinton thing is a right wing conspiracy. The Clintons were always too far right. The "we hate the Clinton's" has just been an act so they can rotate between right leaning Clinton presidencies and right wing wacko presidencies for decades. Our government is almost completely owned by big corporations. They just let us have little victories every once in awhile to make us think we have some say in our government.

My son is in Sadr City. He is going thru shit I wish he never had to go thru. Five from his platoon have been killed in the last couple weeks. He joined the Army because he didn't have a good job. His best friend since childhood was an army recruiter and talked him into joining up as an infantry soldier for the $20,000 bonus. I was a soldier for thirteen years before getting a medical discharge three years ago. I didn't want him to join. I don't think he thought he would end up in combat. I knew as soon as he told me he joined as an infantry soldier. He says it sucks and things are getting really bad over there. Two of his friends were hit by morter fire. They were rushed out by a medevac vehicle. He had to clean up all the blood before going to the hospital to see how they were. He was told they died before they even got there. It sucks Dad.
After worrying about my sons safety I think about how this is fucking him up. Then I think about the 4000+ Americans and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi human being killed. The millions of people fucked up by all this. It sucks. I hear George Bush sleeps like a baby. I wonder what he thinks about?

If it means setting up a bank account for Sam, we should do it. Let's not let him down. He is too good of a guy.

He doesn't think at all. There is no conscience in that mind. On occasion he does feel compassion. Unfortunately, it's not when he hears the plight of your son and his fellow soldiers. As Mark Crispin Miller said, " he doesn't do empathy." Therefore, when he hears about the calamity he has caused, he is the only one deserving of compassion.

I would like to say daveslikefish- that your son will return home safely and soon.
