Great shows, Sam!
It was great to hear you everyday this week, like the good ole days (let's hope they return permanently soon!). Thanks also for Tuesday's Maron show - despite the technical difficulty.
Thank you, Sam!
You're my very favorite radio host, and it's been great to hear you a little more frequently lately. You can take on any topic, no matter how weighty, no matter how dark, and always manage to bring light and levity to it. It's kinda amazing. Thanks for all that you do.

Is Pentagon using Guantanamo trials to influence election?
By Carol Rosenberg | Miami Herald

The Navy lawyer for Osama bin Laden's driver has accused senior Pentagon officials of orchestrating war crimes prosecutions of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to influence the outcome of the 2008 presidential campaign.
In a brief filed Thursday, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Brian Mizer describes a Sept. 29, 2006, meeting at the Pentagon in which Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, a veteran White House appointee, asked lawyers to consider Sept. 11, 2001, prosecutions in light of the campaign.
''We need to think about charging some of the high-value detainees because there could be strategic political value to charging some of these detainees before the election,'' England is quoted as saying. Former chief Guantanamo prosecutor, Air Force Col. Morris Davis, recounted the England remark after he resigned, claiming political interference.

Reports of phony phone calls
Reports of phony phone calls to Democratic delegates
March 28, 2008 - 3:28PM
James Osborne
McALLEN - The Texas Democratic Party has received reports of unknown persons calling and e-mailing delegates to incorrectly inform them their county and senate district conventions have been cancelled, said party spokesman Hector Nieto.
Nieto said several delegates had reported incidents to party officials, but he did not know where in Texas they hailed from. He said party officials were investigating who's behind the misinformation campaign.
Party officials have also received reports of delegates receiving "robo-calls," also claiming conventions have been cancelled.
Texas Democratic Chairman Boyd Richie urged delegates to attend their conventions unless contacted by their local Democratic county chair or a postponement is posted on the Texas Democratic Party's website, www.txdemocrats.org.
"The Texas Democratic Party has not been informed that any county or district convention has been cancelled or postponed. If any delegates receive information to that effect, I urge them to plan to attend their convention as scheduled," Richie said.

Karl Rove's next move: A
Karl Rove's next move: A million-dollar home on Florida's Emerald Coast
Lindsay Beyerstein and Larisa Alexandrovna
ROSEMARY BEACH, FL - The abrupt resignation of President Bush's top adviser and long-time mentor, Karl Rove, in August 2007 in August 2007 raised many eyebrows inside the beltway and as many questions. Rove had been a fixture in the political life of George W. Bush for decades and had weathered innumerable political scandals.
Rove was tight-lipped at the time of his resignation about his reasons for leaving the White House, telling reporters simply that it was “to start thinking about the next chapter in our family's life.”
Whatever the next chapter of Rove's life has in store, some of the action will probably take place in Rosemary Beach, Florida, where he bought land in 2002.
A $165,000 lot becomes a $1 million home
According to political journalist Jim Moore, many factors probably influenced the timing of Rove's resignation--including the desire to cash in on lucrative speaker's fees and the prospect of reinventing himself as a political pundit on the national stage.
"Ultimately, though, what probably appeals to Karl the most is being a sort of freelance Dr. Evil," Moore -- a Rove critic -- explained in an email to RAW STORY. "He can do his work now for hire under the guise of any organization that wants to hire him or he can do it for fun and generally avoid the restraint of party or candidate. Have darkness. Will travel."
Rosemary Beach, Florida bills itself as a vacation community, but Rove's home is no beach bungalow. His Dill Lane pad is a 2,578-square-foot cedar and white stucco structure with a stoop, 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and an outdoor shower. Opposite the main house, separated by a small walled courtyard, is a two-story carriage house with a two-car garage on the ground floor.

Couldn't get the video to run...so the following:
From: Captain Paul Watson
Date: Mar 28, 2008 10:02 AM
Subject: The Silence of the Lambs
Body: The Silence of the Lambs
Commentary by Captain Paul Watson
This morning the screams of young harp seals writhing in agony echoed across the cold wind swept ice floes of the Gulf of St.
Lawrence off the coast of Eastern Canada
Men with blood smeared on their faces swept out across the ice floes swinging their spiked clubs in a frenzy of barbaric slaughter. With each blow, a seal pup was struck, a skull bashed in, an eye knocked out, or a jaw ripped off. Some seals receive vicious kicks to the face from the sealers and other are picked up by their hind flippers and dashed upon the ice by men whose sadistic ruthlessness has become symbolic of the annual horror show that the Canadian government subsidizes and defends.
This morning the first of 325,000 young seals died and the dying will continue for weeks as the sealers invade and violate the seal nurseries delivering agony, misery and death with their spiked clubs, rifles and steel toed boots.
As the seals scream in unimaginable pain and the hot blood steams upon the cold ice, the world is kept in silence to this atrocity by the draconian measures implemented by the Canadian government to silence dissent against this heinous crime against nature and humanity.
Reporters have been banned from the ice!
In Canada it is a crime to witness a seal being killed. It is a crime to take a photograph of a dying seal. It is a crime to video tape or film a sealer doing his grisly work. Unless you have a permit and the government is not granting permits.
And the regulations that ban anyone approaching the slaughter are called the “Seal Protection Regulations.
”
The harp seal pup once described by the missionaries to the Inuit people as the lambs of God now scream in government dictated silence as they die out of range of cameras and the eyes of the compassionate.
How far is the Canadian government going to go to protect this horror show? How much money, time and resources is the Canadian government intending to spend to defend the actions of these monstrous baby killers who exterminate innocent creatures in their nursery?
We intend to find out.
As the slaughter begins the Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat is working it’s way into the ice fields. Above our ship the Canadian Coast Guard is flying their planes. Ahead of us the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Navy wait to defend the seal hunter from the threat of compassionate vegetarians on a ship whose mission it is to document the slaughter of the seals.
The absurdity of it is incredible. Canadian Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn is declaring himself the angel of death to the seals and thumping his chest as the valiant defender of the rights of men to bash and slash seal pups.
The Farley Mowat is moving in closer to the slaughter, threading its way through the treacherous ice floes and around government obstacles and threats on a mission to document the truth.
Our mission this year is clear. To expose the horror and allow the world to listen to the screams of the lambs.
Gore compares global warming
Gore compares global warming deniers to flat earthers
David Edwards and Muriel Kane
Former Vice President Al Gore is about to launch a major advertising campaign to raise awareness of global warming and will appear on 60 Minutes this Sunday to promote it.
In a brief teaser for the interview aired by CBS, Leslie Stahl says to Gore, "There's still a lot of skepticism about whether global warming is man-made."
"I don't think there's a lot," Gore replies. "You're talking about Dick Cheney?"
"I think those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view," Gore continues. "They're almost like the ones who still believe that the Moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat."
Following the clip, Stahl explained to CBS that Gore's objective in his ad campaign is to heighten the sense of urgency about global warming by featuring pairs of "people who don't agree anything but this" -- such as Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson, or Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi -- sitting side by side to discuss the issue.
Stahl also emphasized that her overall impression of Gore was "how relaxed he is ... and really how happy he is."

Shiites march in Iraq to protest crackdown
he government imposes a curfew as tens of thousands take to the streets of Baghdad. Sadr says he's still committed to his militia's cease-fire.
By Tina Susman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
March 28, 2008
BAGHDAD -- In a sign of growing rage against the Iraqi and U.S. governments, tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims marched Thursday in their Baghdad strongholds to protest a crackdown on Shiite militiamen that has led to more than 125 deaths.
The government announced a curfew in the capital until Sunday in an attempt to quell the violence that has spread to several cities since the offensive began Tuesday in the southern city of Basra.
Loyalists of Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr rejected U.S. and Iraqi assertions that the Basra operation was aimed at rogue militiamen, instead insisting that it was targeting Sadr's Mahdi Army militia. A statement released late Thursday by Sadr's political office said the cleric remained committed to the cease-fire he imposed on his militia in August.
"Muqtada Sadr is calling on everyone to follow political solutions and peaceful protest, and not to spill Iraqi blood, to reach a solution to the current crisis," the statement said.

DOJ wins a legal battle with DNC over White House e-mails
A federal judge has handed the White House a legal victory in a battle with the Democratic National Committee over e-mails related to U.S. attorney firings.
District Judge Ellen Huvelle of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled Thursday that the DNC does not have a right under the Freedom of Information Act to 68 pages of e-mails sent between White House and Justice Department officials simply because the White House e-mail traffic was transmitted on a server controlled by the Republican National Committee.
The DNC sued the Justice Department in April 2007 after its FOIA request for the e-mails, which relate to the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, was not granted by DOJ. Attorneys for the DNC argued that since the White House officials used "GWB43.com" e-mail addresses to send the messages, they cannot be deemed to be official in nature and therefore must be turned over under the DNC's FOIA request. Eighty-eight White House officials were given those RNC-controlled addresses to conduct political activities, but the Bush administration later claimed that the accounts were used to handle other official business, such as interactions between the White House and senior DOJ aides on the prosecutor purge.
In dismissing the DNC lawsuit, Huvelle ruled that it was "based on the false factual premise that White House officials only used their RNC e-mail accounts for political communications."
Additionally, Huvelle decided that just because an RNC server was used to send the messages — 68 pages out of more than 5,000 which have been denied to the DNC — it is not enough to automatically disqualify the Justice Department from claiming a FOIA exemption in refusing to release them.

Commentary: Hillary Clinton Lied About Outsourcing, Too
By Paul Rockwell 2008-03-25
Job security is the foremost domestic issue for working people in Pennsylvania, where Sen. Hillary Clinton is expected to win the Democratic Party primary. For many months, as a candidate for president, Senator Clinton has cultivated a pro-labor image. She claims to be an opponent of NAFTA, and she often denounces the outsourcing of American jobs. Before a crowd of students in New Hampshire, she claimed that she hated “seeing U.S. telemarketing jobs done in remote locations, far, far from our shores.”
Newly released White House records demonstrate that Clinton lied about NAFTA. (See “Clinton Lie Kills Her Credibility on Trade Policy,” John Nichols, Common Dreams, March 22.) NAFTA, however, is but a single thread in a web of deception regarding globalization and free trade. Clinton is lying not only about NAFTA, but about outsourcing as well. And the evidence comes, not from Obama, but from official records, video tapes, quotations and recordings of Clinton speeches abroad.

Stuff That Makes Sense
"Now" on PBS is highlighting a cool program in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
A professional team identifies energy-related upgrades for a specific home or business that will (theoretically) pay for themselves in a handful of years. The same group has allied with banks to offer low interest loans. The banks know that the money not spent on energy is available to be shifted to paying down the loan. The Cambridge team then follows the progress of their projections over the term of the loan to track the accuracy of the initial predictions.
------
http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/413/index.html
The Cambridge Energy Alliance, a nonprofit group, will help clients cut their energy use 15-30 percent, which translates into a lower utility bill. The Alliance will then help clients secure loans to pay for the building retrofits, loans designed to pay themselves off by the savings on those utility bills. Retrofitting thousands of buildings could also create a new green job market in Cambridge. It's a bold new experiment, but the Alliance hopes to become a national model that puts green thinking on display, as well as more green in people's pockets. Will this entrepreneurial effort bring new converts to the environmental movement?

They BOTH Broke The Rules!
I am a Druid (state calls me, I am my own church -- IOW Wherever I am is the Church)
I WAS HONOURABLE (but no longer). I do not take My TAX-EXEMPT RIGHTS solely because I speak out and protest and taken over things and got arrested tooooooooo many times ... but if most of you are saying that Minister can say even GOD DAMN AMERICA .... so I can now stand, saying to those that walk with me and from “in my pulpit”, GOD[S] DAMN THOSE BY THEIR ACTIONS **in a sacred space*** ... I told some here why I needed to do more than float at 2d Life -- it was to JUST be there just as another faith, since the Pope is proclaiming to all Arch-Bishops and Bishops to go on 2d city and the different BLOGS and PROSELYTIZE, and now, I get to juice it up a bit AND PROSELYTIZE..
I would not have a "church-ite" before BECAUSE I speak out (LOUDLY & PROUDLY) against the WRONGS done by this Gov't, especially in protests in 80's. For YEARS I did not use MY TAX E. Status because I, too, wanted to say things like but not as bad as GOD DAMN AMERICA and, that type of vitriol in a sacred environment..
So as of next Sunday (actually, any day is sacred) I can speak out like Rev Wright. I have had national & international contact with those of my Faith recently and told them to "stand-by" since I can now speak freely – from a pulpit.. So All The Money, well someone has to pay or tell Minister Wright he has to PAY BACK ALL MONIES for the full time of 20 plus years or I get TONS OF MONEY. Because I am not amused – SINCE I COULD HAVE, ALROUND 30 YEARS MYSELF., and hand in his ministry with Obama unable to run, because OBAMA is a LIAR! SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE, because the only reason I didn’t collect my T E.S. was IT WAS AGAINST THE LAW TO BE SO VERBAL A REVERND. They could have TAKEN MY TITLE if I used for it to talk politics, as Obama’s FAMILY Minister DID. I am calling today many places to COMPLAIN about ALL THIS! hmmmmm. DECADES, that minister and this Gov’t stole from me -- BECAUSE I PLAYED FAIR , the Gov’t, Obama. And His Family Minister DID NOT!

Tax-Exemption Is For Religious Instruction
Submitted by Fernando on Fri, 03/28/2008 - 9:35pm.
well.... not sure but isn't proselyting politics from the tax-exempt pulpit as old as the money changers at the temple???
-----
Yes. However, in the U.S. a religious tax-exemption is supposed to restrict the tax-exempt activities and facilities to religiosity.
There is no fine line (claimed by some) between sermons that speak to societal failings versus those that speak to manipulating politics to solve societal failings. Religion is, after all, supposed to be about learning to get along with one another and eliminating selfishness. An individual does not require political instruction to learn those lessons.
The line that is crossed from the pulpit includes political parties, political candidates and topical political issues.
A tax-exempt sermon, in my opinion, is free to instruct listeners to treat others as they would have themselves treated but it is not free to instruct listeners how to respond to the political issue of immigration.
In theory, listeners who accept the religious instruction from the pulpit will infuse their political opinions with their religious beliefs. That's fine with me and it is inevitable for a non-hypocrytical church member.
The listeners would be forming their own political opinions without having been specifically politically instructed from the pulpit.
If a church wants the right to political instruction...or to open a casino...I say tax the snot out of 'em just like the rest of us.
"...tax the snot out of 'em just like the rest of us."
Amen.

For a brief update: Zionism is the political ideology which promotes the exclusivity of Jews in Israel over any other racial, religious or ethnic group. Zionism, by definition, is racism. Israel, with the full support and funding of the United States, flagrantly violates international law and engages in the systematic ethnic cleansing and oppression of the Palestinian people as well as in the establishment of an apartheid system, not just in the West Bank and Gaza, but in Israel proper. The illegal colonization of Palestinian lands is an international crime and a model of institutionalized racism which is without equal any where in the world in that it is so widely ignored and even encouraged by the majority of so-called civilized nations. More importantly, what is largely forgotten in the little discussion there is of illegal settlement activities being practiced by Israel, is that the settlements themselves are racially exclusive. Jews only need apply. Palestinians aren't even allowed to drive on the same roads as the Israelis in the Palestinians' own territory. I wonder how Mr. Obama would respond if Canada decided to build huge whites-only cities in U.S. territory. I wonder if he would be willing to refrain from driving on a series of Canadians-only roads connecting those illegal colonies. It would only be a security precaution, after all, and Canada is such a stalwart ally or ours.
So-called liberals should examine their consciences before they bow down at the alter of Obamakinism. He has a lot of wonderful, albeit vapid things to say on the subject of race. Indeed, he has a unique platform and perspective from which to address this and other issues. Unfortunately, he is too busy selling out to the Israel lobby and a vast array of corporate interests to actually rise to the occasion in any substantive fashion.

Well, then IRA (which I talked to) either owes me decades of money or ALL those Ministers/Priests be to be fined in a BIG way and/ or never preach again and have to hand over their tax-exempt status (501c3’s).
So now what? Obama lied about what the Reverend said. As a Reverend
for 20-30yrs I know Obama heard and then lied. And he lied about traveling with solely evangelical Ministers. And Obama lied about Liquid Coal to NOW come out and maybe we can work with it. Obama is still lying about his closeness with the Nuclear Lobbyists.......

"Feminists Look for Stuff to Get Mad About"
Of all the condescending, dismissive, and factually incorrect accusations used by concern trolls (or hostile trolls) to attempt to silence, shame, or in some other way discourage feminists from addressing sexism in all its manifestations, perhaps none is quite so stupid as the charge that feminists are "looking" for things about which to be offended -- as if feminism is a product that will go out of production if there aren't enough buyers and sales are waning because sexism is, like, so over, dude.
This notion is ridiculous for a couple of reasons. For a start, misogyny is so pervasive that no one has to look for it.
That said reality is even remotely in doubt is laughable, given that any YouTube comments section on any video featuring a woman will be rife with misogynist swill.
I use YouTube as an example very deliberately, because I want to point out, before moving on, how feminist allies can inadvertently bolster the case of silencers who charge that feminists look for things about which to be offended. Each time I mention YouTube threads, commenters inevitably say either "YouTube commenters are the lowest common denominator" and/or "Just don't read those threads."
I'm not sure everyone who says those things has really considered the implications, so let's deal with that first.
The assertion that YouTube threads aren't a legitimate source because they're ostensibly populated by juvenile delinquents or society's dregs isn't actually a sound argument.
The same stuff—if more accurately spelled and with fewer Random Capitalizations --
can be found in the comments and threads of most major progressive political blogs, especially in response to posts about conservative women.
Add Clinton. Add Lauren. Add Samantha Power. Add any WOMAN.
Add girls like Myla now? Where does it stop? When does it stop?
We are not beasts. We are human beings. We have human rights.
Re-postin' from an earlier post onna the bloggie
You want to know if there's misogyny among progressive blog readers? Blog posters?
Thanks to blogospheric demographics surveys, we know the average blog user is older, better educated, and wealthier than the average person in the general populace; this is not an issue of maturity or intelligence or class.
Treating sexism as though it is indigenous to any singular demographic, or unique combination of traits -- or, the flipside of that equation, regarding any demographic as wholly devoid of entrenched misogyny -- is both foolhardy and inaccurate.
And, more to the point, irrelevant:
There are millions of YouTube users and an alarmingly high rate of misogynistic comments. The quality of who is making those comments isn't of much interest to women who must nonetheless suffer their undeniable quantity. Which brings us to...
Telling women that they should merely abstain from reading and/or participating in YouTube threads -- or other places online and offline plagued by unfettered misogyny -- is akin to telling women their choices are to tolerate sexual harassment in order to participate in it, or segregate themselves and necessarily limit their opportunities in the public sphere.
In addition to unfairly punishing women, that's also a tacit endorsement of openly expressed misogyny.
No matter how authentic the genuine feelings of concern that may motivate such a recommendation, when someone advises a woman to disengage herself from a public space in which misogyny is rampant, one also necessarily, if unintentionally, communicates the message that her contributions to that space are not valuable enough to fight to protect.
By slow increments, every unmonitored space thusly becomes uninhabitable by any woman not willing to suffer -- and indulge -- misogynist bullies.
The truth is, if I actually spent my days actively paying attention to every example of misogyny around me, I would be a profoundly unhappy woman. Not bitchy or grumpy or short-tempered, but paralyzingly depressed.
Women have to train themselves to avoid consciously reacting to every bit of misogynistic detritus permeating the culture through which we all move, lest they go quite insane. I write about the things I can't not write about.
If I wrote about all the examples of sexism I see every day, I'd never sleep.
Feminism seeks to address all manner of issues, big and small. That women can (and do) utilize the tenets of feminism in every aspect of their lives does not undermine the history of the feminist movement, but instead does it a great honor.
Feminism was never meant to be restricted to suffrage and equal pay, held in reserve like a finite quantity that could run out if it's used for "the little things." Feminism is a renewable resource.
The idea that feminism should be kept under glass, broken only in case of a "real" and "serious" emergency, is predicated on the erroneous assumption that "the little things" happen in a void, as do, presumably, the "real" and "serious" things, when, in reality, they are interwoven strands of the same rope.
And as soon as one begins to judge the worthiness of feminists' attention on a sliding scale, even generally-regarded "serious issues" like equal pay are dwarfed by global concerns like sex trafficking or government-sanctioned use of rape as a tool of war.
It doesn't have to be one or the other—feminists can multi-task.
And, in a very real way, ignoring "the little things" in favor of "the big stuff" makes the big stuff that much harder to eradicate, because it is the pervasive, ubiquitous, inescapable little things that create the foundation of a sexist culture on which the big stuff is dependent for its survival.
It's the little things, the constant drumbeat of inequality and objectification, that inure us to increasingly horrible acts and attitudes toward women.
Irrespective of intent, the recommendation to "ignore the little stuff," so often intertwined with accusations of looking for things about which to get offended, is not just ill-advised, but counter to the ultimate goal of full equality.
It's like a knife in my gut when I see feminists accusing other feminists of "hurting the cause" by focusing on "the little stuff," because that's It -- that's the stuff, that's the fertile soil in which everything else takes root and from whence everything else springs, that's the way that the fundamental idea that women are not equal to men is conveyed over and over and over again.
Which, quite frankly, means that if even we had to look for it, we'd be right to do so.

Clinton Owes Obama An Apology
Posted March 26, 2008 | 03:27 PM (EST)
By Keith Boykin
I've had it with the Clintons.
The past few months I've tried to defend Bill and Hillary Clinton against some of the more unreasonable attacks from their critics. Just last weekend on CNN's Ballot Bowl, I defended Bill Clinton when critics accused of him of questioning Barack Obama's patriotism. The critics may have misinterpreted Clinton's remarks, I said, giving the former president the benefit of the doubt.
I've also defended Barack Obama in recent weeks against unreasonable charges directed at him because of his association with his church and his pastor. It seems obvious to me that Barack Obama loves his country and is not an anti-white bigot.
Maybe I'm too close to the two Democrats to be against either one. I went to law school with Barack Obama and worked in the Clinton White House, so I have connections and allegiances to both candidates. That's why I've never understood the rabid Hillary haters or the angry Obama opponents. To me, all three candidates -- including John McCain -- are good and decent Americans who have served their country with distinction.
I wish Hillary Clinton would acknowledge that fact too. In the past few weeks, I've been increasingly disturbed by the gratuitously negative tone of the Clinton campaign.
First, during an interview with 60 Minutes host Steve Croft, Sen. Clinton cleverly stoked the rumors that Obama might be a closet Muslim. "No, there is nothing to base that on," she told Croft. But then she slyly added, "As far as I know."
Next, she all but endorsed McCain over Obama for president. "I have a lifetime of experience that I will bring to the White House," she said. "I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."
Then came the Jeremiah Wright story. Based on the previous tactics used by her campaign, I did not expect Clinton to say much of anything about the Wright story. As Napoleon Bonaparte famously said, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." And after all, the Clintons have relied on the support of controversial black pastors, include Rev. Jeremiah Wright, to save their own hides several times in the past.
But as time went by, and the Wright story lingered on, it seemed Clinton was perfectly willing to let the uninformed public get the misimpression that Barack Obama is moonlighting as an anti-American black nationalist racist. She knows better, and she ought to be ashamed for not speaking up on his behalf.
Just last month, in one of the many near-death experiences that forced her into a moment of vulnerable humility, Senator Clinton told a debate audience in Austin, Texas that she was proud to sit beside Barack Obama. "No matter what happens in this contest -- and I am honored. I am honored to be here with Barack Obama. I am absolutely honored," she said to applause. For a moment, it seemed the Democratic contest might become civil but competitive. For a moment.
Then on Tuesday of this week, apparently dissatisfied that the Jeremiah Wright story had failed to derail Obama's campaign, Clinton broke her silence on the issue and told a newspaper in Pennsylvania (188 delegates) that Rev. Wright "would not have been my pastor."
She repeated her criticism at a press conference later in the day. "You know, we don't have a choice when it comes to our relatives. We have a choice when it comes to our pastors and the churches we attend," she said.
She ought to be ashamed. A month ago she stoked the fears that Obama might be a Muslim and now she plays on the fears of Pennsylvanians that the Illinois senator is a radical black Christian. I would expect that kind of nonsensical fear mongering from a Republican, but I'm disappointed when it comes from a fellow Democrat.
Even John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has acknowledged that Clinton and Obama are both honorable Americans. When a conservative radio host attacked Obama at a Cincinnati McCain rally last month, the Arizona senator stood up for his Democratic opponents and apologized for the attack. "I have repeatedly stated my respect for Senator Obama and Senator Clinton," he said and promised to "treat them with respect." That was much classier than Hillary Clinton's comments on Jeremiah Wright.
As a New Yorker, I have been proud of Hillary Clinton's service in the Senate, and I harbor no ill will toward her. If she somehow manages to wrangle the nomination from Obama, I will actively support her general election campaign. But I cannot remain silent any longer while my own senator destroys the Democratic Party, and her own reputation, in a desperate and degrading effort to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
It's time for Senator Clinton to act like a leader that I know she can be. Hilary Clinton not only needs to defend Barack Obama, she needs to apologize to him.

...stop letting the media dictate our priorities. No one is perfect. It's really a matter of who will be amenable and will listen to US once we gather ourselves into force to be reckoned with. Of course that can't happen if we keep sniping and bickering. Keeping us divided DOESN'T work to OUR benefit.

On March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m., join millions of people around the world in making a statement about climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour, an event created by the World Wildlife Fund.
Earth Hour was created by WWF in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in one year has grown from an event in one city to a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagships–Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco and Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
We invite everyone throughout North America and around the world to turn off the lights for an hour starting at 8 p.m. (your own local time)–whether at home or at work, with friends and family or solo, in a big city or a small town.
What will you do when the lights are off? We have lots of ideas.
Join people all around the world in showing that you care about our planet and want to play a part in helping to fight climate change. Don’t forget to sign up and let us know you want to join Earth Hour.

Sydney goes dark for Earth
Sydney goes dark for Earth Hour By TANALEE SMITH, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 19 minutes ago
SYDNEY, Australia - Sydney's iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge went dark Saturday night as the world's first major city turned off its lights for this year's Earth Hour, a global campaign to raise awareness of climate change.
The lights on the arch of Harbour Bridge were turned off at 8 p.m., followed shortly by the shells of the Opera House and other city landmarks. Most businesses and homes were already dark as Sydney residents embraced their second annual Earth Hour with candlelight dinners, beach bonfires and even a green-powered outdoor movie.
The city was noticeably darker, though not completely blacked out. The business district was mostly dark; organizers said 250 of the 350 commercial buildings there had pledged to shut off their lights completely.
The number of participants was not immediately available but organizers were hoping to beat last year's debut, when 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses shut off lights and appliances, resulting in a 10.2 percent reduction in carbon emissions during that hour.
The effect of last year's Earth Hour was infectious. This year, 26 major world cities and more than 300 other cities and towns have signed up for the event.

Getting Mrs. Clinton
March 28, 2008
I think we've reached a signal point in the campaign. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. You either understand who she is, or not. And if you don't, after 16 years of watching Clintonian dramas, you probably never will.
That's what the Bosnia story was about. Her fictions about dodging bullets on the tarmac -- and we have to hope they were lies, because if they weren't, if she thought what she was saying was true, we are in worse trouble than we thought -- either confirmed what you already knew (she lies as a matter of strategy, or, as William Safire said in 1996, by nature) or revealed in an unforgettable way (videotape! Smiling girl in pigtails offering flowers!) what you feared (that she lies more than is humanly usual, even politically usual).

Ex-Terror Detainee Says U.S. Tortured Him
(CBS) A German resident held by the U.S. for almost five years tells 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley that Americans tortured him in many ways - including hanging him from the ceiling for five days early in his captivity when he was in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Even after determining he was not a terrorist, Murat Kurnaz says the torture continued. Kurnaz tells his story for the first time on American television this Sunday, March 30, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
Kurnaz, an ethnic Turk born and raised in Germany, went to Pakistan in late 2001 at age 19 to study Islam and wound up in Pakistani police custody. It was three months after 9/11, and Kurnaz says the U.S. was offering bounties for suspicious foreigners. Kurnaz says he was "sold" to the Americans for $3,000 and brought to Kandahar as terrorist suspect.
He claims American troops tortured him in Afghanistan by holding his head underwater, administering electric shocks to the soles of his feet, and hanging him suspended from the ceiling of an aircraft hangar and kept alive by doctors. "Every five or six hours they came and pulled me back down and the doctor came," he recalls. "He looked into my eyes. He checked my heart and when he said 'okay,' then they pulled me back up," he tells Pelley.
The U.S. Pentagon responding by e-mail says, "We treat all detainees humanely… and all credible claims are investigated thoroughly…. The abuses Mr. Kurnaz alleges are not only unsubstantiated and implausible, they are simply outlandish."

High Rice Cost Creating
High Rice Cost Creating Fears of Asia Unrest
By KEITH BRADSHER
HANOI — Rising prices and a growing fear of scarcity have prompted some of the world’s largest rice producers to announce drastic limits on the amount of rice they export.
The price of rice, a staple in the diets of nearly half the world’s population, has almost doubled on international markets in the last three months. That has pinched the budgets of millions of poor Asians and raised fears of civil unrest.
Shortages and high prices for all kinds of food have caused tensions and even violence around the world in recent months. Since January, thousands of troops have been deployed in Pakistan to guard trucks carrying wheat and flour. Protests have erupted in Indonesia over soybean shortages, and China has put price controls on cooking oil, grain, meat, milk and eggs.
Food riots have erupted in recent months in Guinea, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Senegal, Uzbekistan and Yemen. But the moves by rice-exporting nations over the last two days — meant to ensure scarce supplies will meet domestic needs — drove prices on the world market even higher this week.
This has fed the insecurity of rice-importing nations, already increasingly desperate to secure supplies. On Tuesday, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines, afraid of increasing rice scarcity, ordered government investigators to track down hoarders.
The increase in rice prices internationally promised to put more pressure on prices in the United States, which imports more than 30 percent of the rice Americans consume, according to the United States Rice Producers Association. The price that consumers pay for rice has already increased more than 8 percent over the last year.
But the United States is fortunate in also exporting rice; poor countries ranging from Sengal in West Africa to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific are heavily dependent on imports and now face higher bills.

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign was quick to send out an e-mail accusing Mr. Obama of making false statements in his ad, saying he has received more than $160,000 from the oil and gas companies.
Phil Singer, deputy communications director for Mrs. Clinton, put out this statement: “It’s unfortunate that Senator Obama is using false advertising to explain why he can be trusted to do something about energy prices. Senator Obama says he doesn’t take campaign contributions from oil companies, but the reality is that Exxon Mobil, Shell and others are among his donors. I wonder if they’ll fix the ad.”
Mr. Singer shouldn’t hold his breath. Bill Burton, press secretary for the Obama campaign, reaffirmed the ad’s message, saying “Senator Obama is the only candidate in the race who doesn’t accept campaign contributions from special interests PACs and Washington lobbyists, and that includes oil companies and oil lobbyists.”

Bush seeks financial regulation overhaul By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer
1 hour, 12 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is proposing a sweeping overhaul of the way the government regulates the nation's financial services industry from banks and securities firms to mortgage brokers and insurance companies.
The plan would give major new powers to the Federal Reserve, according to a 22-page executive summary obtained by The Associated Press.
The Fed would be given broad authority to oversee financial market stability. That would include new powers to examine the books of any institution deemed to represent a potential threat to the proper functioning of the overall financial system.
The proposal, which will be outlined Monday in a speech by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, is certain to set off heated debates within different sectors of the financial services industry and in Congress, where some Democrats are likely to complain that the proposal does not go far enough to crack down on abuses.
The administration divided its recommendations into short-term goals that could be adopted quickly, intermediate recommendations and an "optimal" regulatory framework, which contains a radical restructuring of how the government supervises banks and other financial institutions.
The recommendations are the product of a yearlong review that was begun in an effort to modernize the government's regulatory structure so that the country's financial services industries could better compete in a fast-changing global economy.

Treasury Dept. Plan Would
Treasury Dept. Plan Would Give Fed Wide New Power
By EDMUND L. ANDREWS
WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department will propose on Monday that Congress give the Federal Reserve broad new authority to oversee financial market stability, in effect allowing it to send SWAT teams into any corner of the industry or any institution that might pose a risk to the overall system.
The proposal is part of a sweeping blueprint to overhaul the nation’s hodgepodge of financial regulatory agencies, which many experts say failed to recognize rampant excesses in mortgage lending until after they set off what is now the worst financial calamity in decades.
Democratic lawmakers are all but certain to say the proposal does not go far enough in restricting the kinds of practices that caused the financial crisis. Many of the proposals, like those that would consolidate regulatory agencies, have nothing to do with the turmoil in financial markets. And some of the proposals could actually reduce regulation.
According to a summary provided by the administration, the plan would consolidate an alphabet soup of banking and securities regulators into a powerful trio of overseers responsible for everything from banks and brokerage firms to hedge funds and private equity firms.
While the plan could expose Wall Street investment banks and hedge funds to greater scrutiny, it carefully avoids a call for tighter regulation.
The plan would not rein in practices that have been linked to the housing and mortgage crisis, like packaging risky subprime mortgages into securities carrying the highest ratings.
The plan would give the Fed some authority over Wall Street firms, but only when an investment bank’s practices threatened the entire financial system.
And the plan does not recommend tighter rules over the vast and largely unregulated markets for risk sharing and hedging, like credit default swaps, which are supposed to insure lenders against loss but became a speculative instrument themselves and gave many institutions a false sense of security.

Merkel joins Poland and Czech Republic leaders who will not attend the opening ceremonies. These leaders are all people who grew up under Soviet domination so they all have first hand experience with a bully regime maintaining power over another country. Will this tip the balance for other EU leaders to boycott? The more important question is whether China will stick to its old ways or join the modern world in terms of both business and respect for human rights. They can do as they like but it's their choice. It is also everyone else's choice not condone China's actions.

Rove's "fingerprints are smeared all over the case" says former Alabama Governor Siegelman

Don Siegelman got out of jail today. He had a conversation with the New York Times and he immediately and appropriately blamed Karl Rove for his legal troubles. Rove is going to have to answer a lot of questions about this case. And, that pompous little bastard better not claim executive privilege. If Rove can spend hours pontificating on Fox News, he can find the time to answer some questions -- under oath:
In a telephone interview shortly after he walked out of a federal prison in Oakdale, La., Mr. Siegelman said there had been “abuse of power” in his case, and repeatedly cited the influence of Karl Rove, the former White House political director.
“His fingerprints are smeared all over the case,” Mr. Siegelman said, a day after a federal appeals court ordered him released on bond and said there were legitimate questions about his case.
Mr. Rove has strenuously denied any involvement in the conviction of the former governor, who was sentenced to serve seven years last June after being convicted in 2006. He could not immediately be reached for comment today.
Mr. Siegelman served nine months while his lawyers appealed a federal judge’s refusal to release him on bond, pending the ex-governor’s appeal of his conviction. That refusal was overturned by the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit on Thursday.
The former governor, a Democrat, said he would “press” to have Mr. Rove answer questions about his possible involvement in the case before Congress, which has already held a hearing on Mr. Siegelman. On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee signaled its intention to have Mr. Siegelman testify about the nature of his prosecution.

UTICA — When the Rev. William Procanick put his hand on the Bible during his sex-abuse trial in Oneida County Court earlier this year, he swore to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
But as the former Clinton pastor was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for inappropriately touching a 7-year-old girl at his home last March, Judge Michael L. Dwyer said Procanick sacrificed his honesty the day he testified.
“As a minister of God, you got on the stand and you lied,” Dwyer told Procanick, the 54-year-old former pastor of Resurrection Assembly of God church on Kirkland Avenue.
A jury found Procanick guilty Jan. 22 of first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
Dwyer said he believes Procanick was being honest when he told the girl's mother in a recorded phone call that he was wrong to caress the girl's body while she was trying to fall asleep.
However, Procanick instead testified in court that he did nothing wrong other than spend time alone with the girl, who was a friend of the family, Dwyer noted.

At a University of Georgia roundtable discussion yesterday, five former secretaries of State — Henry Kissinger, James Baker, Warren Christopher, Madeleine Albright, and Colin Powell — agreed that the next president should move quickly to close Guantanamo Bay. Highlights from the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
Powell, who was in office when the notorious prison opened in Cuba, was the first Thursday to call for it to be shuttered. The most recent holder of the office on the stage, Powell served the current president from 2001 to 2005.
“Our image abroad has dropped significantly,” Powell said. He put some of that blame on his former boss. […]
Guantanamo “gives us a very, very bad name, not just internationally,” [James] Baker said. “I have a great deal of difficulty understanding how we can hold someone, pick someone up, particularly someone who might be an American citizen, even if they were caught somewhere abroad, acting against American interests, and hold them without ever giving them an opportunity to appear before a magistrate.”

Brain-damaged woman at center of Wal-Mart suit
JACKSON, Missouri (CNN) -- Debbie Shank breaks down in tears every time she's told that her 18-year-old son, Jeremy, was killed in Iraq.
Debbie Shank, 52, has severe brain damage after a traffic accident in May 2000.
1 of 3 The 52-year-old mother of three attended her son's funeral, but she continues to ask how he's doing. When her family reminds her that he's dead, she weeps as if hearing the news for the first time.
Shank suffered severe brain damage after a traffic accident nearly eight years ago that robbed her of much of her short-term memory and left her in a wheelchair and living in a nursing home.
It was the beginning of a series of battles -- both personal and legal -- that loomed for Shank and her family. One of their biggest was with Wal-Mart's health plan.
Eight years ago, Shank was stocking shelves for the retail giant and signed up for Wal-Mart's health and benefits plan.
Two years after the accident, Shank and her husband, Jim, were awarded about $1 million in a lawsuit against the trucking company involved in the crash. After legal fees were paid, $417,000 was placed in a trust to pay for Debbie Shank's long-term care.
Wal-Mart had paid out about $470,000 for Shank's medical expenses and later sued for the same amount. However, the court ruled it can only recoup what is left in the family's trust.
The Shanks didn't notice in the fine print of Wal-Mart's health plan policy that the company has the right to recoup medical expenses if an employee collects damages in a lawsuit.

Krauthammer:McCain Has‘Hidden Agenda’To‘Kill The United Nations'
There Goes Those Crazy Rethugs Wanting To Go Backwards Again !
Yesterday in an foreign policy address in Los Angeles, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called for the United States to create and lead a “League of Democracies” in order to “harness the vast influence of the more than one hundred democratic nations around the world to advance our values and defend our shared interests.”
Numerous media outlets interpreted McCain’s speech as a call for “cooperation” and “collaboration” with allies and the rest of the world, “drawing a sharp contrast to the past eight years under President Bush.” But last night on Fox News, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer revealed the true meaning behind McCain’s “League of Democracies”:
KRAUTHAMMER: Well, I like the idea of the league of democracies, and only in part because I and others had proposed it about six years ago. What I like about it, it’s got a hidden agenda. It looks as if it’s all about listening and joining with allies, all the kind of stuff you’d hear a John Kerry say, except that the idea here, which McCain can’t say, but I can, is to essentially kill the U.N.

Robotic phone calls lead Democratic delegates astray
AUSTIN — The Texas Democratic Party on Friday urged delegates to today's senatorial district and county conventions to ignore e-mails and robotic phone calls telling them that the conventions have either been canceled or had their times changed.
The conventions are a crucial turning point in Texas as the presidential campaigns of Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama fight for 67 nominating convention delegates who will be chosen through the Texas caucus process.
While Obama appeared to come out of the caucuses with a 37-30 lead, the number can change based on how many supporters for each candidate show up for today's local conventions.
That prompted Democratic Chairman Boyd Richie to put out an alert after receiving reports that delegates were being given misinformation about the conventions. Richie said all the conventions are going to occur as scheduled.
"We have received reports from delegates who have received e-mails saying that conventions have been canceled," Richie said. "We have also received unconfirmed reports that someone is placing robo-calls claiming to be from the Texas Democratic Party suggesting that county or district conventions have been cancelled."
The e-mails, at least, appear to be a self-inflicted wound by Clinton's campaign. Convention delegates who had signed up for Clinton event notices on her Web site late Thursday received notices that their local convention had been canceled. The error occurred when the campaign deleted entries for conventions that had changed times or locations, said Texas field director Mike Trujillo.......

Joe Galloway:
Shame on them, and shame on us, for such callous indifference to the service, sacrifice and suffering of the families of the dead, wounded and injured troops who've given so much for so little in return.
Vice President Cheney again stuck both feet in his mouth by saying and then repeating that we should remember that our military is composed entirely of volunteers; that our troops all volunteered for this duty, this burden, this sacrifice.
What's your point, Mr. Vice President? That because they volunteered to serve our country in uniform it’s okay to squander their lives in a war of choice, your choice and your president’s, and that it somehow matters less than if they'd been dragooned into service by press gangs or a draft like the one you dodged with five deferments during the Vietnam War because, you said, you had “better things to do”?

“situation normal, all fucked up.”
When a Great Power Goes Mad
By Robert Parry
March 28, 2008
With the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War and the grim milestone of 4,000 U.S. dead, the nation has been awash with news retrospectives on the war and speeches by politicians, mostly offering sanitized versions of what's transpired.
With a few exceptions, these media/political reflections have had the feel of self-rationalizations, more than self-criticisms. They’ve conveyed a sense that the U.S. system is doing just fine, thank you, although a few mistakes were made.
So, you have President George W. Bush, the chief author of this catastrophic war, declaring that “normalcy is returning back to Iraq” even as fighting rages across much of the country and rockets rain down on the highly fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.
Bush’s comment invited comparisons to the acronym coined by U.S. Army soldiers during World War II: SNAFU for “situation normal, all fucked up.”
In the news media, there were specials, including a much-touted PBS Frontline two-parter on “Bush’s War” which followed the mainstream line of mostly accepting the Bush administration’s good intentions while blaming the disaster on policy execution – a lack of planning, bureaucratic rivalries, rash decisions and wishful thinking.
The chief interviews for the program were with former Bush administration officials and with journalists – such as Michael Gordon and John Burns of the New York Times whose influential reporting helped set the stage for the war – and with Bob Woodward, whose Bush at War was a generally flattering account of Bush’s decision-making.

Cowardly Superdelegates
Cowardly Superdelegates
by BooMan
Sat Mar 29th, 2008 at 01:46:43 AM EST
Mike Lux reports on something we already know. The party elders, the superdelegates, and the informed party activists know that Hillary Clinton can't win and they want this race over. However, Lux actually talks to superdelegates, and what he is hearing is that they are collectively a bunch of cowards that desperately want the people of Pennsylvania to tell the Clintons the race is over so they won't have to.
They don't want the Clintons and McAuliffe and those donors who signed the letter to stop raising money for them. They don't want Carville and Wolfson to call them a traitor. They don't want all the behind-the-scenes trashing that they know will come.
There is a logic behind James Carville (who gets his paycheck from CNN) telling Bill Richardson that he is a Judas. It's pure intimidation. And it is working. Reid and Pelosi and Dean and Gore are all trying to be polite about it, but their insistence that the process not continue all the way to the convention is a way of telling the Clintons that they have no path to the nomination.
Dodd and Leahy have been less polite. But pulling out the victim card isn't going to change a thing.
In a conversation with two Democratic allies, she compared the situation to the “big boys” trying to bully a woman, according to interviews with them.
Who is really doing the bullying here?
I'll admit that in a boxing match, no one likes the see it go to the judges. People pay to see a knockout. And that's what we need to deliver to the Clintons, because they seem to think they can buy off or frighten the judges into throwing the bout.
Mrs. Clinton’s aides said they could see no circumstance in which she would withdraw unless she lost Pennsylvania on April 22. Two senior advisers and one close ally said they would urge her to quit the race if she lost Indiana two weeks later, on May 6.
We're doing everything we can think of to make sure Clinton loses Pennsylvania, but it really shouldn't matter.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, issued the most unvarnished statement Friday, saying Clinton "has every right, but not a very good reason, to remain a candidate for as long as she wants to."
Sen. Leahy is absolutely correct. Clinton has no 'good reason' to stay in the race because she is just angering and frightening people. And once she loses the clout to frighten people it won't be very pleasant for the Clintons. At that point, all that is left is the anger. Read between the lines:
Mr. Dean said he wanted the contest settled well before the convention at the end of August. He urged the superdelegates, uncommitted party leaders and elected officials, to unify behind a candidate soon after the last nominating contests on June 3.
“I don’t think superdelegates should be waiting for the convention,” he said. “There’s no reason they can’t make up their mind now or in the last several weeks. Ideally, it would be good to know who the nominee is by July 1.”
The number of people that want this nomination wrapped up in Obama's favor is now overwhelming, so they should make that clear to the Pennsylvania voters. Don't put all the onus on the Obama campaign to cut through all the noise. They can't make an effective inevitability argument anyway. That's normally the job of surrogates. But in this case, it should be the job of cowardly superdelegates. Get off your asses and tell the world how you're gonna vote. Don't be afraid of Terry McAuliffe and James Carville...they'll never have any power in the Democratic Party again. They can go back to asking for leniency for Scooter Libby, or whatever else they like to do.

"KRAUTHAMMER: Well, I like the idea of the league of democracies, and only in part because I and others had proposed it about six years ago. What I like about it, it’s got a hidden agenda. It looks as if it’s all about listening and joining with allies, all the kind of stuff you’d hear a John Kerry say, except that the idea here, which McCain can’t say, but I can, is to essentially kill the U.N."
Eventually it would turn into a UN. It will be the same as the UN is today. Leaders change and opinions change.

I don't know whether the Lindbergh or O.J. Simpson trial was the Trial of the 20th Century, but the biggest mystery of the 21st is who stole anthrax out of the Ft. Detrick, Maryland bioweapons lab and mailed it to Pat Leahy, Tom Daschle, Tom Brokaw and others. Apparently, the FBI is still investigating, and if they ever figure it out, it could be one of the most explosive trials in our nation's history. It all depends on who that person is connected to and whether they were part of a larger conspiracy. This part is interesting.
In December 2001, an Army commander tried to dispel the possibility of a connection to Fort Detrick by taking the media on a rare tour of the base. The commander said the Army used only liquid anthrax, not powder, for its experiments.
"I would say that it does not come from our stocks, because we do not use that dry material," Maj. Gen. John Parker said. The letters that were mailed to the media and Sens. Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy all contained powdered anthrax.
But in an e-mail obtained by FOX News, scientists at Fort Detrick openly discussed how the anthrax powder they were asked to analyze after the attacks was nearly identical to that made by one of their colleagues.
"Then he said he had to look at a lot of samples that the FBI had prepared ... to duplicate the letter material," the e-mail reads. "Then the bombshell. He said that the best duplication of the material was the stuff made by [name redacted]. He said that it was almost exactly the same … his knees got shaky and he sputtered, 'But I told the General we didn't make spore powder!'"

Colombia: Uribe Offers to Release Rebels for Hostage’s Freedom
By REUTERS
Published: March 29, 2008
The government offered cash and reduced jail terms to leftist guerrillas in exchange for releasing the politician Ingrid Betancourt after years of captivity in jungle camps. Ms. Betancourt, left, 46, was kidnapped during her 2002 presidential campaign by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and is suffering from malnutrition and hepatitis B, according to Colombia’s human rights ombudsman. President Álvaro Uribe said his government would maintain a $100 million fund to pay rewards to guerrillas who free any of the hundreds of kidnapping victims held by the FARC. On Thursday he signed a decree allowing for a mass release of guerrillas from jail if Ms. Betancourt was freed.

It doesn't look like Iraq is going to cooperate with the president and John McCain's excellent plan to have Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker testify that the surge is working. I think that whole narrative will become 'non-operative'. This means that there really is no justification for John McCain's candidacy.
However, the Republicans have gamed this out from the beginning so that increased violence means we can't leave and decreased violence means that we can stay. So...increased violence must mean that things are too dangerous and unstable to justify leaving.
Now, for you history buffs, the Israelis foolishly invaded Lebanon in 1982, and they left in shame in 2000. That's eighteen years of foolish, counterproductive, expensive, pointlessness. And Iraq is Lebanon on steroids. Kind of like Jose Conseco, only worse.

Somalia’s Government Teeters on Collapse
By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN
Published: March 29, 2008
MOGADISHU, Somalia — The trouble started when government soldiers went to the market and, at gunpoint, began to help themselves to sacks of grain last week.
Jehad Nga for The New York Times

Islamist insurgents poured into the streets to defend the merchants. The government troops took heavy casualties and retreated all the way back to the presidential palace, supposedly the most secure place in the city. It, too, came under fire.
Mohamed Abdirizak, a top government official, crouched on a balcony at the palace, with bullets whizzing over his head. He had just given up a comfortable life as a development consultant in Springfield, Va. His wife thought he was crazy. Sweat beaded on his forehead.
“I feel this slipping away,” he said.
By its own admission, the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia is on life support. When it took power here in the capital 15 months ago, backed by thousands of Ethiopian troops, it was widely hailed as the best chance in years to end Somalia’s ceaseless cycles of war and suffering.
But now its leaders say that unless they get more help — international peacekeepers, weapons, training and money to pay their soldiers, among other things — this transitional government will fall just like the 13 governments that came before it.

The Bush Administration and their never say die FISA/Immunity push are like cockroaches. You can't kill em, and they never go away. Well, they're back again. Attorney General Michael Mukasey has graduated from DC water carrier to full fledged traveling snake oil salesman for the Cheney/Bush Administration and their sordid attempts to cover their own criminal wrongdoing via retroactive immunity for telcos.
Last night, Mukasey spoke at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco and got so emotional in his desperate plea for retroactive immunity and unlimited snooping that he he welled up with tears in the process.

South Africa fight back in India
Rahul Dravid, left, passed 10,000 Test runs before the South African bowlers fought back on day four [AFP]
South Africa fought back well on the penultimate day of the first Test against India, as they took a 44-run lead to stumps with nine wickets in hand after finally bowling out the home side for a mammoth 627 in Chennai.
Neil McKenzie, South Africa opener, was not out on 59 with Hashim Amla, who scored 159 in the first innings, also unbeaten on 35, as the tourists made their way to 131 for 1 at stumps.
The only South African wicket to fall was that of opener and captain Graeme Smith for 35 when he was trapped LBW by Harbhajan Singh.
South Africa's slender lead sets up an interesting final day where the hosts will be looking for quick wickets, while the tourists could go for quick runs in the hope of setting some sort of run chase late on day five.
Virender Sehwag, India's dual-triple centurion, was dismissed early for 319, while former skipper Rahul Dravid's 111 helped make him the sixth player in Test history to surpass the 10,000 run mark.
Apart from VVS Laxman (39) and Saurav Ganguly (24), no other Indian batsman made an impression on day four, as the hosts took an 87-run lead on the first innings after South Africa had made 540 in their first dig.
India, resuming at their lunch score of 547 for 4, lost six wickets in the afternoon session to be bowled out for 627 just before the tea break.
Dale Steyn, Proteas fast bowler, took four of the last five wickets to finish with 4-103, left-arm spinner Paul Harris was the most expensive with 3-203, while Makhaya Ntini finished with 3-128.

Oliver Stone movie on Bush...
Just as it's taken decades for the silver screen to get close to the deep corrupt heart of Julius Caesar via the soap opera style "ROME", how long will it take for Bush and Cabal to be portrayed as the bloody scammers they are?
Over at DailyKOS there's a thread on Stone's casting of the Dubya role.
How can someone be smart enough to memorize lines and simultaneously act arrogantly stupid? Seems impossible.
If true, the choice of Brolin (didn't he already do Reagan?) seems to have been a choice for physical height, but everyone I know is always surprised to learn Dubya is tall; they think he's short (like the political cartoonists show him -- they get it). His total body proportion to head size stuff does not translate as height on the screen.
The Bush story is a story of murder, genocide even, chaos and mayhem Neocon-style -- what happens when the network of a Dynasty of scammers (The Bushes) takes charge of the most powerful imperialistic and destructive machine the planet has ever known. I think the story needs an approach that would resemble an amped "Fargo" in order to get across the impetus of insanity that underlies the last eight years. Indeed, even the Bush delusions of God talk is clearly the insanity of schizophrenia on some level!
I wish Stone good luck in getting his interpretation even close to 'on-target'.

Redistribute voting power
IMF backs shift in voting power
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has backed plans to redistribute voting power in the organisation.
It has recommended changes which would base the power of each of the IMF's 185 member countries on the size of their economy, reserves and trade.
The US has expressed reservations about the move but said that it would support it because it represented progress.
However poorer nations and charities have said the plans, which must still be ratified, do not go far enough.
IMF members have spent more than a year negotiating the changes - which would move some sway away from traditional industrial powers including the US, the UK and Germany - to the faster-growing emerging and developing economies.
China, India, South Korea, Mexico and Brazil are among those that will see their voting power increase.
However, under the proposal the likes of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Russia, Iran and Argentina would lose influence and all five countries either voted against the plans or abstained from voting.
Final decisions will be made after the IMF's spring meeting next month.
Obama: Dem Race Is Like A
Obama: Dem Race Is Like A Good Movie That's Gone On Too Long
By Eric Kleefeld - March 28, 2008, 5:50PM
Barack Obama publicly alluded to the various calls for the Democratic race to be over soon, telling a Pittsburgh crowd today that the Democratic race was like "a good movie that lasted about a half an hour too long."
This has got to be a dicey subject for the Obama camp. On the one hand, they presumably want their surrogates to keep attention focused on the notion that she should drop out. But on the o
ther hand, if they get a little too loud about it then they risk alienating voters in those states that have yet to vote, especially Pennsylvania.

Analysts said the figures were a clear sign that shoppers are cutting back amid fears of a recession.
The Federal Reserve and the White House have taken action to lift the economy.

The figures also showed that personal incomes rose by 0.5% in February, which was better than expected.
A key gauge of inflation, the personal consumption expenditure index, rose by 0.1% when food and energy costs were excluded.

In his State of the Union address, President George W Bush made reviving the US economy the centrepiece of his last year in office. But can he do enough to avoid blame for the slowdown?
When the economy is in trouble, it rarely bodes well for the party in power.
Republican President Herbert Hoover was blamed for the 1929 Great Depression, leading to a landslide victory for Franklin D Roosevelt and ushering in an era of Democratic reform that lasted for a generation.
The most popular Republican president of recent times, Ronald Reagan, was elected in 1980 over his Democratic incumbent, Jimmy Carter, after inflation soared to a record high during the oil crisis.
Economic woes also played an important role in Bill Clinton's win in 1992 over Mr Bush's father, George H Bush, who lost after one term in office.
"It's the economy, stupid"
As the economy has become the most important election issue, the Republicans are increasingly getting the blame this time as well.
Recent polls show that Democrats have a wide lead over Republicans on which party would do better on the economy, dealing with the recession, helping home owners - and even lowering taxes.

The Hillary Deathwatch
Hillary Clinton is as good as dead. This became the consensus over the past week, when the media awoke en masse to the dual reality that 1) Clinton can't close the pledged-delegate gap and 2) Obama has her beat in the popular vote. But the Clinton campaign shows no signs of slowing—she said herself she's prepared to compete for at least three more months. So the question now is not just "How dead is she?" but "When will she realize it?"
In the tradition of Slate's Saddameter (gauging the likelihood of invading Iraq), the Clintometer (measuring the chances of a Lewinsky-related ousting), and the Gonzo-meter (charting the attorney general's demise), we bring you the Hillary Deathwatch, a daily update on Hillary Clinton's dwindling chances of winning the Democratic nomination.

The US researchers found those exposed to pesticides had a 1.6 times higher risk after studying 600 people.
Experts said it was now highly likely pesticides played a key role - albeit in combination with other factors.
The disorder, which normally develops later in life and can affect movement and talking, is also influenced by genetic factors.
We still don't know exactly what causes Parkinson's
Kieran Breen, of the Parkinson's Disease Society
Several gene defects have been identified, but these are thought to be rare and only account for a small proportion of the 120,000 people affected by the disease in the UK.
The US team, which involved scientists from Duke University, Miami University and the Udall Parkinson's Disease Research Center of Excellence, quizzed 319 patients about their pesticide use.
The answers were compared to over 200 family members and other controls who did not have the disease.
Related individuals were chosen as they would share many environmental and genetic backgrounds in a bid to isolate the impact of the pesticides.
They found those exposed to pesticides had a 1.6 times greater risk of developing the disease.

McCain corrupt -- but can it be made clear to voters?
McCain is participating in a Bush-assisted SCAM against every taxpayer in this nation!
McCain got on all the ballots across the country FOR FREE because he agreed to limit his campaign monies to public funding -- BUT NOW McCain has broken that agreement and IS TAKING PRIVATE CAMPAIGN DOLLARS IN VIOLATION of that agreement!!!!!!!!
Bush is assisting McCain in perpetuating this RIP-OFF of the taxpayers who now are paying for McCain's ballots; Bush is assiting by preventing the oversight of campaign process activities. It was as simple as not appointing new members of the oversight group. Did McCain proceed to disregard the rules without KNOWING Bush had his back in the scam??? If McCain knew Bush was going to prevent punishment for breaking the rules/law -- ISN'T THAT CONSPIRACY to DEFRAUD the taxpayers???????
SCAM, RIP-OFF, THEFT. CONSPIRACY. That's all these Republicans know how to do. They don't know how to win; they only know how to CHEAT and STEAL.
Don't EVER use the term "win" again to describe how these crooks get into office. Use the words "CHEAT" and "STEAL" and you'll be speaking CLEAR language!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Man Behind The 4,000th
The Man Behind The 4,000th Number
By: Nicole Belle @ 9:00 AM - PDT As I watched the talking heads in the last week try to justify and rationalize that horrifying milestone of 4,000 casualties in Iraq and Dana Perino trying to convince us that Bush truly grieves for each loss, the anonymity of it all started to niggle at me. Four thousand is such an antiseptic number that marks how many lost loves, and children who will miss their mommy or daddy’s guidance and love? How many lost hugs and kisses? How many games of basketball with buddies from back in the day? How many future plans, both grandiose and small, have vanished? These men and women sacrificed for some amoral ideological notions of profit and hegemony all had lives that have been cut needlessly short and deprived their loved ones of their companionship forever. My buddy, Bob Geiger tried to put a face and a life behind that milestone number.
The Agonist (cross posted at HuffPo):
We know that 96 percent of the Americans killed in Iraq have died since Bush boasted that our mission was accomplished and we know with sickening assurance that we have hit the hideous milestone of 4,000 of our own dead in the Bush administration’s war of choice.
We arrived at that number on Sunday and we’ve seen it replayed in all its sterility throughout the media this entire week.
And to be sure the numbers of dead and wounded while astounding in generalities have sadly begun over the last five years to lose their specificity, to render us unable to grasp the individual stories of lives lost for no reason and so many families left with interminable grief.
But I want to tell you about number 4,000, because he has a name and he had a wonderful life to come.
His name is Christopher M. Hake. He was a U.S. Army Staff Sargent. More importantly, he was a husband to wife Kelli and a father to 1-year-old son, Gage.
He was from Enid, Oklahoma — and he was 26 years old.
We can’t say for sure that Hake was number 4,000 of our Iraq dead because Pvt. George Delgado, 21, of Palmdale, Calif., Pfc. Andrew J. Habsieger, 22, of Festus, Mo. and Spc. Jose A. Rubio Hernandez, 24, of Mission, Texas all died in a horrible blast earlier this week when, according to the Defense Department, “their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive” in Baghdad.
But as a Veteran myself, I can tell you that these men were brothers until the end and that, because more early news and details are available on Chris Hake than his buddies, we can tell his story and hope all Americans understand the identical preciousness of every life we have needlessly lost in Iraq.

As far as political goes...
Is it believed that Wright held some kind of pro-Obama Presidency/Anti American pep rally in his church?
Or that Obama was unduly influenced by the mesmerizing, Svengali-like superpowers of Wright?
'cuz, I sat in church and Sunday school, the later church youth groups and CCD, etc allduring my formative years and nothing the ministers/pastors/priests ever said had a bit of influence on me, and those were my formative years. The yrics to Lennon/McCartney and Donovan and Dylan held more sway with me than anything.
Does Obama appear to be so weak-willed that he'd take to heart everything some pastor spatters? Hell, if we all did we'd be blood-thirsty zealots massacring everything in our paths - remember Deuteronomy? Hell, the ranting of Jeremiah and the other prophets are unbelievable, and put Wright to shame as some kind of softie on sin.

Uh, you should ask yourself if this is a line of questioning that you really want to pursue.
McCain as hard to expose as Bush in 2000?
The trouble with McCain is similar to the trouble with Bush in 2000. It seemed an impossibility that anyone as dumb or bumbling as Dubya could win.
And those of us who did work at exposing Bush's many failures worked hard. If we couldn't make more hay out of Bush's AWOL, drug&alcohol-addled, bad-business-record history in 2000 -- what can we do to discourage rah-rah for McCain?
0 He abandoned his first wife and his children by that marriage refuse to talk to him (The Republican Curse of Truthful Children)
0 McCain was an adulterer
0 Savings & loan scam connections
0 he clearly displays the symptoms of PTSD from his years of being tortured and yet he now crazily supports torture
0 he displays symptoms of Alzheimer's dementia
0 his campaign staff is full of lobbyists despite his claim to be against lobbyist influence
0 he's a hothead (a problem whether or not it is a symptom of PTSD!)
0 illegally influenced the FCC regarding Packwood Communications and a Pittsburg TV station
0 he's now violating his agreement to limit private campaign funding and ignoring warnings about his violation
0 McCain is stealing from the taxpayers via a scam to make them pay for all his ballots at a time he lacked funds in his campaign account
0 poor health question concerning recurring cancer

Is just pointing these things out going to convince voters to pass over McCain? Is going any further against a "war hero" going to be taken well?

I thought you all were serious. This disturbed me.
Deficit relief
Just start taxing all churches equally. Why should they get a free ride? I am being shafted not being a member of one and also being vilified by several of them. It would solve all of this religious crap. Maybe the tithe rate will have to go up.
The time has come to separate the churches from the state for real.
I would give them some time to get their financial shit in order since their vast wealth will need some achtung.
Yeah, I know, this is gonna happen.

i dont know about that coz i have spoken to people outside the US that say the same thing!!

That's what I've thought for awhile. This infighting is driving me crazy.
They both need to start asking questions about and talking about McCain's flaws.
Although with Bill and Hillary complimenting McCain all the time, it doesn't look like they will fight to hard against McCain right now. They are using McCain against Obama and by doing that, they are selling McCain, especially to these ditz brains that say if Hillary loses, they will vote for McCain.
I've never had any problem
with what Wright said. But like you, I'm an atheist, so I hear people of faith saying incredibly outlandish things all of the time that don't even raise a brow within the pews. Often they are hateful framings of people the church feels are out of step.
That's like water during Katrina over there.

I'm voting for them to rise Crank
-----
I would wager that the rise in fuel prices during the Bush years has taxed more Americans to a greater monetary degree than any future administration's tax policies will.
Incompetent policies need not include increased taxes to result in de facto taxation.
Had fuel prices remained relatively static, and had the Bush administration taxed the same Americans in the same amounts that increased fuel prices have (a tax rate which could NEVER pass muster), and had those monies been spent to address the needs that the Bush administration has ignored or underfunded, we would all be better off.
The difference between reality and my "what if" is that no one is better off and the money is disappearing down a rat hole.

separate the churches from the state for real
why cant the leaders of this country just say that outright? i thought religion is a personal thing---i remember how shocked we used to be back in SA when the very late President John Vorster used to say this is a "God Fearing Country"...what?

I don't think anyone figured on how mad-cow crazy Hillary turned out to be. It would have never occurred to me that she'd take the party down with her. If she had not behaved the ape-shit crazy way and maintained her dignity, we would have had a chance.
I'm not done hoping Hillary will find a way to regain her decorum and attempt to pull herself together. At least enough to try to unify the party as much as her damaged self can.

They BOTH Broke The Rules!
I am a Druid (state calls me, I am my own church — IOW Wherever I am is the Church)
I WAS HONOURABLE (but no longer). I do not take My TAX-EXEMPT RIGHTS solely because I speak out and protest and taken over things and got arrested tooooooooo many times … but if most of you are saying that Minister can say even GOD DAMN AMERICA …. so I can now stand, saying to those that walk with me and from “in my pulpit”, GOD[S] DAMN THOSE BY THEIR ACTIONS **in a sacred space*** … I told some here why I needed to do more than float at 2d Life — it was to JUST be there just as another faith, since the Pope is proclaiming to all Arch-Bishops and Bishops to go on 2d city and the different BLOGS and PROSELYTIZE, and now, I get to juice it up a bit AND PROSELYTIZE..
I would not have a “church-ite” before BECAUSE I speak out (LOUDLY & PROUDLY) against the WRONGS done by this Gov’t, especially in protests in 80’s. For YEARS I did not use MY TAX E. Status because I, too, wanted to say GOD DAMN AMERICA and, that type of vitriol in a sacred environment, and according to the law surrounding this: whomever wears the mantle one must adhere to the LAW of the First Amendment..
So as of next Sunday (actually, any day is sacred) I can speak out like Rev Wright. I have had national & international contact with those of my Faith recently and told them to “stand-by” since I can now speak freely – from a pulpit.. So All The Money, well someone has to pay or tell Minister Wright he has to PAY BACK ALL MONIES for the full time of 20 plus years or I get TONS OF MONEY. Because I am not amused – SINCE I COULD HAVE, AROUND 30 YEARS MYSELF., and hand in his ministry with Obama unable to run, because OBAMA is a LIAR! SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE, because the only reason I didn’t collect my T E.S. was IT WAS AGAINST THE LAW TO BE SO VERBAL A REVEREND. They could have TAKEN MY TITLE if I used for it to talk politics, as Obama’s FAMILY Minister DID. I am calling today many places to COMPLAIN about ALL THIS! hmmmmm. DECADES, that minister and this Gov’t stole from me — BECAUSE I PLAYED FAIR , the Gov’t, Obama. And His Family Minister DID NOT!

Prophets and Politicians
Edward J. Blum, a historian of race and religion at San Diego State University and author of "W. E. B. Du Bois, American Prophet" and "Reforging the White Republic: Race, Religion, and American Nationalism, 1865-1898," suggests that while some Americans may be understandably offended by Wright's divisive remarks, those remarks are part of a long and storied tradition among African-American church leaders who have forged Christian ideologies and rhetoric to condemn racial discrimination. Blum spoke with NEWSWEEK's Jamie Reno about this history and the entry of race as a front-burner issue in this presidential campaign. Excerpts here:

True Christians realize that it is not just the Baby Jesus who likes to get gold ingots and fragrance on his birthday. Everyone wants to be made a fuss over! And it is your duty, solely out of Christian concern, to let others know they are getting alarmingly old.
Does someone you know need to be reminded that, no matter how much they Botox, they are falling apart and are being increasingly shunned in the public places where catty people congregate for cocktails and loudly whispered appraisals of personal shortcomings?
Send them Happy Birthday wishes so special they can only be delivered by a pack of Christian Crack Whores!

Without a doubt! Like the Industrialists whom Marx commented on - shoving religion down the throats of the poor in order to get them used to being treated like slaves...
Same holds true for the poor, the exploited, and slaves. Give them something that tells them their suffering is in direct relationship to:
1) God's justice (you must deserve it somehow/you are born into sin - So don't complain) and
2) how much you'll be rewarded for your suffering in the next world (so don't complain!)

RE AIDs epidemic being mad scientist created....
Germ weaponry creation is REAL. There ARE mad scientists and insaner bureaucrats and insanist Men Of Power who are in charge of this insane stuff. Their intended EUGENICS use of these materials cannot be discounted. It's not much of a jump to the next rock across the River of Heinousness to imagine these same madmen deploying such creations.
You gotta do some research because it is not common knowledge. But it's happening on just about every campus -- portions of research done by scientists who don't even know what the final research goal is; they do one component of the puzzle. Somewhere else are the components put together to make the final thing.
A number of good books are out there on this topic, but still the general population looks at this stuff as if it were mere science fiction and has nothing to do with the way our tax dollars are being spent THIS VERY MOMENT.
For instance, the germ weapons labs were dabbling with Mad-Cow-disease-like Cruxfeldt-Jacobs disease back in the 1960-80s (simultaneous with other non-military research into the disease) and then, WHAT A COINCIDENCE, all of the sudden we have an explosion of Alzheimer's Disease in the population. Now why would a germ warfare lab be interested in weaponizing such a disease? To set free a disease in one's enemy's population that would cause an eventual economic/cultural collapse? And who decides who the "enemy" is? (Is the enemy anybody who is collecting Social Security? (And when you're a Bush or Bush-style anti-SSI eugenics freak, well how could you not consider a SSI-parasite to be an enemy?)) And how come they don't care if their research is being done in populated areas where any lab accident would result in escape of infectious agents?
YUKK! Gotta get out of imagining how the Bush creeps think. Gotta shake it off. Shake it off!

Iraq: More US airstrikes on Basra
By RYAN LENZ, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080329/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq
BAGHDAD - U.S. jets widened the bombing of Basra on Saturday, dropping two precision-guided bombs on a suspected militia stronghold north of the city, British officials said.
Maj. Tom Holloway, a British military spokesman, said U.S. jets dropped the two bombs on a militia position in Qarmat Ali shortly before 12:30 p.m.
In eastern Baghdad, two American soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in a mostly Shiite area that has seen fierce clashes this week.
Basra is Iraq's commercial and oil hub, and militant followers of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have been battling Iraqi and coalition forces in the southern city since Tuesday.
"My understanding was that this was a building that had people who were shooting back at Iraqi ground forces," Holloway said.
The number of people killed in the latest strikes was not yet known, he said.
Iraqi police said that earlier in the day a U.S. warplane strafed a house and killed eight civilians, including two women and one child. They spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information. The U.S. military had no immediate comment on the report and it was not possible to independently verify it.
British jets also have been providing air support in the area. The British military had no immediate information but said it also was looking into the reports of civilian casualties.
American forces launched their first airstrikes in Basra Friday as Iraqi troops struggled against strong resistance in the nation's commercial center and headquarters of the vital oil industry. Clashes there have sparked retaliatory fights in Baghdad and other Shiite cities.
The British army has joined in the fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, firing artillery Saturday afternoon to support Iraqi forces, military officials said.
The Defense Ministry said a few artillery rounds had been fired at militants using mortars to attack Iraqi forces in Basra.
The fight there is crucial for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who flew to Basra earlier this week and is staking his credibility on gaining control of Iraq's second largest city, which has essentially been held by armed groups for nearly three years.
Al-Maliki, speaking on government television Saturday, told tribal leaders in the southern city that he "will not leave Basra until security is restored" and those who have taken up arms against the government will be punished.
"We will continue to stand up to these gangs in every inch of Iraq," he said. "This is a decisive and final battle."
Al-Sadr called on his followers to defy government orders to surrender their weapons, saying arms of the Mahdi Army should only be turned over to a national leadership "that can get the occupier" — meaning the Americans and their coalition allies — out of Iraq.
The order was made public by Haidar al-Jabiri, a member of the political commission of the Sadrist movement.
AP Television News footage showed smoke rising from the home in Basra's Hananiyah neighborhood where the police said the civilians were killed. Pools of blood and a destroyed pickup truck were seen outside the home hit by the plane.
Sheik Nasir Abdul Hussein in Basra said the strikes came after midnight and were followed by gunmen shooting in the air.
"The thunder of the aircraft frightened children," he said. "The sound smashed glasses, and the area was lighted by aircraft."

Wimpy, weak-kneed Party fears tight Obama-Clinton finish
By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - For all their delight in soaring voter registration and strong poll numbers, some Democrats fear the contest between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton might have a nightmarish end, which could wreck a promising election year.
The chief worry is that Clinton may carry her recent winning streak into Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina and other states, leaving her with unquestioned momentum but fewer pledged delegates than Obama. Party leaders then would face a wrenching choice: Steer the nomination to a fading Obama, even as signs suggested Clinton could be the stronger candidate in November; or go with the surging Clinton and risk infuriating Obama's supporters, especially blacks, the Democratic Party's most loyal base.
Some anxious Democrats want party elders to step in now to generate more "superdelegate" support for Obama, effectively choking off Clinton's hopes before she can bolster them further. But many say that is unlikely, and they pray the final 10 contests will make the ultimate choice fairly obvious, not excruciating.
Barring a complete meltdown by Obama, Clinton has almost no chance of surpassing his number of pledged delegates, even if she scores upset wins in states such as Oregon, which votes May 20. But such victories would encourage her to keep criticizing Obama — her only hope for the nomination — and thus heighten doubts about Obama's ability to defeat Republican Sen. John McCain in the fall.
That scenario troubles many Democrats, especially those who feel Obama's nomination is all but inevitable.
"This is going to give Republicans a chance to try to destroy everything we've been trying to work for for eight years," said Ken Foxworth, a Democratic National Committee member from Minnesota and superdelegate who backs Obama.

And why, pray tell, doesn't "caricature" begin with "ch"?

The answer is because wagon doesn't begin with "ch".
