"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union."

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America's improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation's original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution - a Constitution that had at is very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time.

And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States. What would be needed were Americans in successive generations who were willing to do their part - through protests and struggle, on the streets and in the courts, through a civil war and civil disobedience and always at great risk - to narrow that gap between the promise of our ideals and the reality of their time.

which i actually doubt since there's so much else to talk about - anyway, sam, i want to suggest that you interview Robert Kuttner for your next book show - his latest book (came out in 2007)The squandering of america - I am reading it now (and have been for over a couple of months because it is a heavy read for someone who is not steeped in financial knowhow like dan and nefferkitti here) - I think most of what Kuttner wrote in this article sam extracted in previous threads came from this book - it's fascinating and obviously Kuttner saw the current trainwreck coming and he knows its stuff

I read an amusing article which compared the Fed's recent actions to the Whack a Mole game. As each credit crisis has popped up, Ben Bernanke has whacked it back down with a fist full of dollars. maron has it wrong. he missed the beginning of obama speech when he denounced the rev's message and twisted into something else that doesn't have any relevance. but you can't attack what obama said because it more or less was "i love my mother" shit. you can't argue with him about him changing thought or subject without sounding like you are saying obama doesn't love his mother.

Maron made a point last week that applies to this week--he was talking about his house and he said how he's the kind of person that relies on people who seem to know what they're doing. That's how things are with politics. People want to sit back and trust officials to do the right thing.

These firms are too large and diverse to be managed effectively. The economy has been put in peril by what are clearly broken banking practices and a failing business model.

Okay, not really. But the recent “strike” by pro-Hillary writers at dkos has more and more blog readers and writers choosing sides, or blogs in this case. As many have noted, Hillary supporters are more likely to found at Mydd or TalkLeft. The issue has gotten the attention of traditional media like the NYTimes and a segment this morning on MSNBC. Kos’s response in the Times piece was “it’s a big Internet” so no problem.

I started wondering just how different the various sites were in the discussion of campaign-related events. To examine this, I did a series of Google searches on campaign controversies that are negative for one candidate or the other. The negative Obama stories were Rezko and the Jeremiah Wright controversy. The negative Clinton stories were the controversial comments by Geraldine Ferraro and Bill Shaheen. Follow along for the results.

Today, after the lead story, with more bad news about the american enslavement by corporate fascists, they ran the story about how polluted the air is where the Olympics will be held. this is just in the past two days. this mind manipulation has been going on for a long time. but the people of this country are too fucking stupid or addicted to speed and have the mind of a retard to notice or remember a week after being told.

so when the bad news hits the fucking retard in his fucked up chemically altered worthless mind of his, the corporate fascist media newscast redirects the hatred that this retard suddenly feels towards the powers that be, and himself (for being such a worthless schmuck of a human being). Hell. United States censors Guantanamo prisoner's sketch of force-feeding

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba — The United States has censored a gruesome drawing by a Guantanamo Bay detainee depicting him as a skeleton being force-fed at the military prison, the man's lawyers said Monday as they released a recreation of the sketch.

The detainee, Sami al-Haj, a Sudanese cameramen for the Al-Jazeera TV network, marked his 431st day on hunger strike Monday at Guantanamo, the U.S. base in Cuba where some 275 men suspected of terrorism or links with al-Qaida or the Taliban are being held.

"My picture reflects my nightmares of what I must look like, with my head double-strapped down, a tube in my nose, a black mask over my mouth, with no eyes and only giant cheekbones," al-Haj said in a statement released by the British legal rights group Reprieve.

The lawyers said they commissioned a political cartoonist, Lewis Peake, to recreate four of al-Haj's drawings, based on descriptions of the censored originals, to reveal "aspects of the prisoners' suffering in U.S. custody."

U.S. navy Cmdr. Rick Haupt, a spokesman for the prison camp, denied detainees are mistreated and said al-Qaida trains its operatives to allege inhumane treatment.

"We continue to treat all detainees safely and humanely," Haupt said.

Seven detainees remained on hunger strike Monday to protest against conditions and their indefinite confinement at Guantanamo. All were being fed liquid nutrients through a tube inserted into their nostril.

Clive Stafford Smith, one of al Haj's lawyers, said the censorship of the drawings was motivated by public-relations concerns.
