Afghan death toll soars to 8,000 last year
The United Nations has delivered a grim assessment of the conflict in Afghanistan, reporting that violence increased sharply last year and resulted in the deaths of more than 8,000 people, at least 1,500 of them civilians.

In a report to the security council, the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, said the number of violent incidents rose from an average of 425 a month in 2006 to 566 each month last year.

Chris Matthews (almost) never makes me do anything but roll my eyes and groan when he opines but he just knocked one completely out of the park.

Matthews was on Morning Joe shortly after a segment with Rep. Patrick Murphy had appeared. Joe Scarborough had told Murphy that (because of his Iraq service) he was exactly what the Democratic party needs (inferring that he is the exception).

Scarborough was discussing Murphy with Matthews as his segment started and said "He's what the Democrats have needed for so long, it's been so easy to beat up Democrats as sort of weak on defense" and "This guys the real deal" when Matthews cut in with "So let me get this right, If you're a Democrat you have to have about four or five battle ribbons to be OK but if you're a republican you can be Dick Cheney with four or five deferments. That's the rule." and "Democrat's start about four notches down from patriotism and have to work their way up."

Matthews later added "But if you're a republican the National Guard will do, I mean I love these standards you know, you got to be Audie Murphy if you're a Democrat. You're unbelievable Joe, you patronized this guy."

Those of us who are players in financial markets know very well that the system is rigged in favor of those at the top and against those at the bottom and in the middle.

Because of a substantial body of work over a career, the market is a little bit fairer.

Because of Eliot Spitzer, average American investors in the market are a little more protected. Those most corrupt forces in the market are a little more investigated.

The guilty are a little more prosecuted and the potentially corrupt are a little more deterred because of Eliot Spitzer.

Yes, what he did in this latest fiasco was shameful, and no doubt he will pay some price — and he should.

Yet watching the crowing and high-fiving on CNBC and from some on Wall Street, they are crowing and high-fiving not because they care about average investors, but because they have largely opposed reform and protection for average investors, and prosecutions of those who rip off average investors.

So: Let’s boo for his involvement with prostitution but give him a standing ovation for his defense of honest markets, his support for honorable investing, his advocacy of greater disclosure, and his prosecution of crooks.

Add samsedershow to your buddy list - doesnt require you to send an invite to Sam....just add samsedershow as a buddy.

Then this is the easy way to IM

Obama On Track For Big Victory In Mississippi Today

Today is the Mississippi primary, in which Barack Obama is excepted to win big thanks to heavy African-American turnout, as he has in other Deep South primaries.

The Jackson Clarion-Ledger says turnout is expected to be only light to moderate, but still higher than the 2004 primary when John kerry had already sewn up the nomination. The polls close at 8 p.m. ET.

I left the Sammy Cam open after Thom's show. It came right on.

My county has a homeowner's education program. It was free to attend
for several weeks and we learned about mortgages, home repair, home inspection, real estate agents, contracts, etc. Both my husband and I took the course
separately and got a certificate at the end that gave me some kind of special
deal on my mortgage. It WAS VERY WORTHWHILE. There's a lot to learn.

My mom was telling me a while back about the police force in her town (West-Central Illinois, on the MS river) conducting crowd control training. This is an unbelievably tame, Right Wing town of about 30k-40k, with never the slightest signs of activism (aside from anti-abortion rallies).

Fallon Resigns
Admiral William Fallon is out as CENTCOM commander.

Fallon has resigned, according to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, in a press conference at the Pentagon.

According to a recent Esquire profile of Fallon, a piece which generated considerable controversy within the Pentagon:

[W]ell-placed observers now say that it will come as no surprise if Fallon is relieved of his command before his time is up next spring, maybe as early as this summer, in favor of a commander the White House considers to be more pliable.

Here is Fallon's statement:

"Recent press reports suggesting a disconnect between my views and the President's policy objectives have become a distraction at a critical time and hamper efforts in the CENTCOM region. And although I don't believe there have ever been any differences about the objectives of our policy in the Central Command Area of Responsibility, the simple perception that there is makes it difficult for me to effectively serve America's interests there," said Fallon.

"I have therefore concluded that it would be best to step aside and allow the Secretary and our military leaders to move beyond this distraction…and focus on the achievement of our strategic objectives in the region. I have submitted my request to retire to the Secretary of Defense."

Spitzer Spoils Clinton’s Delegate Count
Susan Davis reports on the presidential race.

If New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigns, as is widely anticipated, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton will be down one superdelegate. The scandal-tainted governor and his Lt. Gov. David Paterson currently are two of the roughly 800 superdelegates who will also cast ballots at the August nominating convention. Both are public backers of Clinton.

If Spitzer resigns, New York succession laws provide for Paterson to assume the role of governor until the term expires in 2010. Here’s the rub: succession law also provides for the president of the state senate to become lieutenant governor. That man is Joseph Bruno, a Republican and political enemy of Spitzer.

It is safe to say that Bruno will not be casting a ballot at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

The Democratic National Committee today confirmed that New York would lose Spitzer’s superdelegate slot. His resignation at this point seems inevitable. The New York Sun reported today that the governor is using his resignation as a potential bargaining chip with federal prosecutors to avoid criminal charges.

... is complicated by the fact that they're running on a third-party ticket in an election literally stacked against third-party candidates. As the Green Party platform addresses, third-party candidates in the Presidential election have little chance of winning an election until Instant Runoff Voting (or similar) are implemented for the Presidential contest (short of one party's candidate totally imploding during the campaign).

Your comment would definitely apply, imo, to the candidacies of many of the Democrats in this year's cycle, prior to "whittling" the choice down to Obama and Clinton.

In announcing the troop increase thirteen months ago, President Bush told the public that the added numbers of U.S. soldiers would give the Iraqi government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki “political space” in which to debate and enact laws

1) amending earlier statutes that would deny employment in the post-Saddam Iraq to any Iraqi who had been a member of the Ba’athist Party;

2) creating new arrangements to develop Iraq’s oil fields and for distributing revenues from sales of oil, and

3) finalizing arrangements for the election of provincial government officials.

So what is the box score?

1) The “re-employment” law as passed throws more people out of work than it takes in, particularly in the security services where an estimated 20,000 could lose their positions, their income, and all inhibitions to oppose the current government and the coalition forces.

2) The Iraqi parliament could not resolve disagreements on which level of government, Baghdad or the provinces, controls oil and gas resources and who has the power to conclude contracts for developing the oil fields. Similarly, efforts to legislate the informal arrangements pertaining to the distribution of oil revenues foundered on objections of the Kurdish faction and their demands for the referendum on the future of Kirkukt.

3) As for the provincial election law, this was passed by the Iraqi parliament but was then vetoed by the presidency council.

That’s zero for three, which in baseball is an out.

Mississippi Primary: Latest News And Polls

What To Watch For In Today's Results: Andrew Romano at Newsweek argues that although Mississippi is Obama's to lose (according to recent polls), there are three important things to watch coming out of today's primary:

1) The Delegate Count: As we've repeated ad nauseum, Obama's case for the nomination at this point is all about math: I am winning by 100-plus delegates, he says. No matter what happens in the upcoming contests, I will still be ahead in the delegate count by the end of regulation. If things go as planned today, his campaign could emerge with a new arithmetical talking point. On March 4, Hillary Clinton won the primaries in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, giving her a ton of narrative momentum--"Comeback Kid," anyone?--but only a tiny net gain in delegates. Ohio awarded her nine more delegates than Obama, but his victories in Vermont and the Texas caucuses canceled out her primary wins in Rhode Island and the Lone State State. With two delegates from Saturday's Wyoming win, that means Obama has a chance to completely erase Clinton's March 4 advances today. According to Slate's Delegate Calculator, a 20-point win net him the seven delegates needed to do the trick--which is exactly what the polls are predicting. So keep an eye on that margin. Of course, a nifty mathematical "triumph" won't trump Clinton's comeback storyline, or shift the spotlight off of Pennsylvania. But it's definitely the factoid that Team Obama is hoping to feed the talking heads tonight....

You promote your choice of candidate for the Democratic nomination with fervor. I don't object to your determined attempts to sell Hillary Clinton to your readers.

It is your methodology that I criticize because I do not believe that it is furthering your cause.

I believe that you hope to sway fence-sitters at the least and Hillary haters at the most.

Hitting readers over the head with a big stick is not likely to be successful. I state this with the full awareness that I have tried hitting you over the head with a big critical stick without success...although the wolf pseudonym has been more civil and measured in its attempts to sway readers' opinions.

The Right really likes to peek where it doesn't belong: They are peeping toms into our private bedroom actions -- but they strictly use the results of their peeping to serve their own greedy purposes, not for any decent reason for the public good. If the Right wanted to, they could've made as big a scandal -- even bigger -- out of Paul Wolfowitz's putting his girlfriend on the payroll letting the taxpayers' pay for her. (At least Spitzer paid his babe's bill himself!)

The Right knows how liberals as a group want to do the right thing and any hint of naughtiness and scandal destroys the idealistic glow we enjoy and they know we don't want the human side of our liberal brethren to upset that idealistic balance. The Right knows we are not realistic about this. We have to get over this manipulation by the Right and the Right-dominated media! Spitzer should not have to resign if Sen. Vitter and Rep. Larry Craig continue to get to hang out on public salaries.

The Right knows we have high standards and says to us -- "You live by your liberal standards and we Righties will live by OURS!" And we put up with this! NO MORE DOUBLE STANDARD. All leave or none leave; no double standard.

SPITZER'S PRESS STATEMENT A BIG ERROR
I think the political error Spitzer made was that press conference where he apologized. The public doesn't really understand what he apologized for. Therefore, every slimy thing thrown at him -- crimes worse than an appetite for 'call girls' -- will now appear to be valid. It was a serious failure on his part. His apology now will be juxtaposed to every accusation and used to make him look guilty for aspects that aren't even close to true. A big failure. Never make an apology until the charge is clarified and disputed in detail.

Crimes like the Murderous Iraq InvasionOccupation, death by bad food and pharmaceutical drugs and denial of medical care, War Profiteering and Disaster Profiteering, and so on -- these are the crimes the FBI et al should be investigating. Spending our limited crime-busting budgets on stopping ADULT CONSENSUAL PHYSICAL CONTACT shows a FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO SET PRIORITIES in an era of economic downturn and -- as we are so often told -- during a 'war on terror'. Lack of proper priorities set by the FBI et al should not be acceptable! If Spitzer leaves, we should make sure those who orchestrated this bad priority fiasco are also shown the door.

We should certainly form televised hearings to investigate the corruption within the democratic party!!!

I listened to a few minutes of Rhodes again today. I see the Clintons strategy is working on Rhodes as well as in general. Rhodes is really a stupid woman.

I'm pretty sure now the Clintons will be back in the White House. I was unsure for a while because their approach did not seem to work well with Obama but they have tailored it and it is starting to kick in.

I have to say that the Clintons are the most interesting politicians I have ever seen. If you don't understand what they are doing when they go into battle mode, and you have to be pretty smart to get it-it all seems random and chaotic. Once you understand their strategy it is almost frightening how brilliant they are.

Its funny, the I told you so left supporting Obama is not smart enough to see what the Clintons are doing but you can tell they sense something is wrong. They live in a constant state of fear, causing them to lash out wildly making crazy accusations, raising their voices in a state of panic at every new development. Sort of like a sheepy that knows the wolves are closing in.

I heard Rhodes today once again misstating basic facts to support her various silly theories-I find them all to be patently absurd. But all I can say is "You go girl". As a Hillary supporter I only wish there were hundreds more just like you. :)
