WAR OF THE ROSES

Hillary Clinton, fratricidal maniac.

writing about Hillary's scorched earth campaign
And here I was thinking she was maniacally pursuing her slim thread of a chance, not caring--or possibly even hoping, with an eye toward 2012-that she would destroy Obama's chances of defeating McCain in the process. I feel ashamed for having suspected her motives.

Then Jonathan proceeds to methodically examine exactly why destroying the Democratic party for a run in 2012 is exactly what Hillary's plan is. Its an excellent analysis I wish more Hillary supporters would read.

TORONTO - Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office denied on Friday that Canadian officials received back-channel assurances from Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign that her comments on NAFTA were for political show.

Harper's chief of staff, Ian Brodie, was reported to have said that someone in Clinton's campaign gave Canada assurances that her harsh words about the North American Free Trade Agreement should be taken "with a grain of salt," according to a report by the Canadian Press.

Asked about it on Thursday, Harper spokeswoman Sandra Buckler said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that "Ian Brodie is alleged to have made an offhand comment about a rumor to a reporter. He does not recall saying it."

Asked about it again on Friday, Buckler said Canadian officials did not discuss NAFTA with the Clinton campaign.

After reading many pages of this manipulation, It looks like possibly the entire scandal was created by Canada for Canada. They don't want NAFTA renegotiated at all.

Tough talking

These two contests are really one contest. It is Senator Clinton who has spent the past week tying herself to John McCain as fast as McCain could tie himself to the purse and leading-strings of George W. Bush. They have thus simplified Obama's task. The most direct and appropriate way for Obama now to run against Hillary Clinton is to run against John McCain.

Treat McCain as the opponent, and Clinton, with all politeness, as the ghost on McCain's threshold. If she dares to follow Obama into opposition again, let her try; but here Obama is the one with the "lifetime of experience."

An open run against John McCain, starting now, will also be a referendum on the presidency of George W. Bush. Because, to repeat, McCain has pinned himself to Bush just as Clinton has pinned herself to McCain. Yahoo

Clinton Library Money Woes

The little that is known about the identities of the donors to the Clinton library was reported by the New York Sun in 2004, after a reporter discovered the names on a touch-screen computer on the third floor of the library after its opening.

Members of the Saudi royal family, Arab businessmen, the governments of Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar, Brunei and Taiwan, and Hollywood celebrities, were among the 57 individuals or foundations who gave $1 million or more to the library, according to the Sun.

The computer with the list of donors was disconnected after the Sun article ran. At the time, Clinton officials said that a permanent list of donors contributing $100,000 or more would eventually be installed on a wall at the library. ABC Blotter

Bill Clinton's presidential library raised more than 10 percent of the cost of its $165 million facility from foreign sources, with the most generous overseas donation coming from Saudi Arabia, according to interviews yesterday.

The royal family of Saudi Arabia gave the Clinton facility in Little Rock about $10 million, roughly the same amount it gave toward the presidential library of George H.W. Bush, according to people directly familiar with the contributions. WAPO

Now, in the wake of the launch of her presidential campaign, the pardon controversy has reemerged in an obscure court case in which Senator Clinton's brother Tony is battling an order to repay more than $100,000 he received from a couple pardoned by President Clinton. Boston.com
