To think of it, I think Dennis Kucunich is free of the group of politicians this joke fits! And I think Ralph Nader,too, is free of the group of politicians this joke applies to. Nader may not even be a politician (professional politician that is) technically.
Maybe we should have a new category of public servants: those who've been voted in because they are not professional politicians who make a career of gaming the election system.

The New Republic reports that Michigan "plans to get out of its uncounted delegate problem by announcing a new caucus in the next few days."
Said the source: "They want to play. They know how to do caucuses. That was their plan all along, before they got cute with the primary."
"Michigan Democrats had originally planned on caucuses after the legally permissible Feb. 5 date, but then went along with top elected Democrats, including Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who pushed for an early primary."

I spent an hour on a "town hall meeting" "conference call" with Roy Blunt.
Yes, he's an embarrassment. He took some heat but deflected it by, well, smoothly answering with unrelated information. That is to say he lied.
A caller was unhappy with the earmark appropriations that he had learned about on CBS (60 Minutes?). Blunt answered the accusation by talking about highway projects. (The highway projects were fuel tax money, not earmarks buried in unrelated legislation.)
Some idiot complained about the rising cost of agricultural products due to corn production being devoted to "methanol." I guess what with words and concepts like methane, ethanol and methamphetamine to keep straight, it's just too much to ask of a rube.
While Roy waxed eloquent about drilling in Anwar, I accessed the information online that indicates (by the U.S.'s own estimates) that the entirety of the most likely total number of barrels of available oil in Anwar would supply the U.S. for 210 days.

For 40 years, Kucinich has cleverly molded his image to suit the political climate.
Subject(s): Dennis Kucinich, political clap-trap It was December 1978, the darkest period in Cleveland history.
Just a year earlier, 31-year-old Dennis Kucinich had been elected mayor. Now the city was in bankruptcy. Six hundred jobs had been slashed, including 400 policemen and firefighters. The neighborhood development corporations, once the backbone of Cleveland's renewal, had been drained of their funding. And City Hall had been overrun with an army of novitiates, whose qualifications began and ended with their loyalty to the mayor.
The man charged with averting disaster was the city's 24-year-old finance director, whose only work experience was a nine-month stint at Merrill Lynch. The acting police chief was a 21-year-old college coed with wispy bangs. The inevitable implosion of Kucinich's scorched-earth rise to mayor had arrived.
As a city councilman, he had climbed the ranks of Cleveland politics through a strategy of nonstop combat, fighting everyone from colleagues to businessmen, bankers to bureaucrats. He accused them of being corrupt, lazy, and unsympathetic to the city's white working class — his largest sect of voters. If council was for tax abatements, Kucinich accused them of being in the pocket of business. If they wanted housing for the East Side's black poor, he castigated them for ignoring the West Side's ethnic whites. If you weren't with him, you were his enemy, and Kucinich spared no sound bites in illuminating your sins.
"It's not every day in Cleveland or any other city that you have the mayor calling the city council a bunch of lunatics and buffoons," says Brent Larkin, The Plain Dealer's editorial director, who covered Kucinich's reign for the now-defunct Cleveland Press. "You don't call everybody a bunch of fucking crooks, and that's what he did."
Kucinich may have been right about corruption and lethargy, but he was now proving to be a much worse alternative. After all, a mayor's job is a yeoman's task, about paving streets and ensuring safety. But Kucinich had allowed style to manhandle substance; he was against everything, rather than providing solutions of his own.
"If you are mayor, you have to do things," says Mike Roberts, The Plain Dealer's former city editor. "There was nothing that he did of any success, unless it was self-serving."
City dwellers who could afford to flee did so in droves. Everyone else was holding on for dear life. "The town had a nervous breakdown during [Kucinich's] mayoralty," Larkin says. "He wore everybody out."
Yet almost 30 years later, Kucinich has managed to recast this period as his greatest triumph. In the revised telling, this isn't a story of a mayor who hurled the city into chaos with startling swiftness. It's a rewritten David and Goliath tale, with Kucinich playing the role as the only man with the cojones to stand up to corruption and nefarious corporations. His presidential campaign paints a man of sturdy principles, unsinkable optimism, and untainted liberal bona fides — a mythology now being regurgitated by everyone from supporters to the national media.
The "people's mayor," he is called. The "worker's president," he dubs himself.
"It's Kucinich time, now," wrote Cleveland native Scott Raab in his gushing Esquire profile.
"Kucinich has made a life and career of overcoming obstacles, challenging expectations and making unpopular decisions simply by trusting his gut," lavished the Chicago Tribune.
But if history tells us anything, it's that Kucinich will play any role to his advantage — be it race-baiter or liberal purist — only to spin himself a new image the next day. It's a formula that hasn't changed in 40 years.
"He has done a spectacular job of rewriting history," Larkin says. ". . . You can neither understand nor appreciate Dennis unless you were here then. You had to have lived through it — and, God, it was incredible."

In New York City, as TV's widely viewed Without a Trace series regularly reminds us, people disappear all the time. But something new, a headline revealed last week, is now disappearing in New York. Grocery stores.
Over the last six years, researchers report, the number of supermarkets in New York has shrunk by a third. Three of the city's top food chains -- D'Agostino, Gristedes, and Key Food -- "have each closed about a dozen stores since 2000."
Why are New York's supermarkets shutting down? No one needs to call in the FBI to investigate. Analysts already know the answer. New York is simply becoming too unequal -- too economically top-heavy -- to sustain the basics of modern American middle class life.
The enormous wealth now concentrated in New York has sent property prices so high that supermarkets can no longer afford to rent their urban spaces. The city's "soaring real estate values," the Washington Post notes, "are prompting property owners throughout the city to shutter grocery stores and sell to developers."
Those developers are bringing to market condos and businesses that cater to the ever-richer ranks of New York's awesomely affluent. No mystery why. These affluents have congregated in New York at levels seen nowhere else in the United States.

Folks, for 2008, Hillary Clinton has one overriding goal:
Prevent Barack Obama from winning the White House.
If that means she wins, great. But, if that means handing the White House to the Republican and John McCain, that's also acceptable. Because, after all, there's always 2012.

I won't say vote for the less evil, I say vote for the candidate you think public pressure has the best chance to change after the election. Nevada, Hillary threatens to sue because she didn’t like the caucus process, but then she “won” more votes, so she dropped that rhetoric. Delegate count? Clinton - 12 Obama - 13. Huh? That doesn’t seem like a win to me.
Texas, Hillary scored a “huge” victory by winning the Primary and likely picking up 1-4 (yes, that is correct) delegates. Problem is, the caucus is still being counted and will fall to Obama, with him picking up 5-7 delegates and will be the actual winner in Texas, by several delegates.
Oh, and by the way, Hillary is threatening to sue the Texas caucus process. I know, you’re surprised.

but I can't..I've checked with myself numerous times...It felt proper for me to study the appealing candidates, see what they've done, said, promised, platform etc...and I'm voting for the person who most matches what I would want as a president, (if I'm forced to have one)...I decided to play this game of political elections, knowing that it may matter not one whit who I vote for....I'm pretending it does matter...I think it was pbtrue who said it best in my mind the other day, not sure, but it was something like the Dems lubricate before they fuck you...
And I can see why that seems appealing when considering who ya want to be fucked by....

As has been widely reported, Hillary Clinton's top guru, Mark Penn, is leading the charge within the Clinton campaign to go aggressively negative against Obama. Besides the fact that Penn is the architect responsible for Hillary's presidential aspirations going from "inevitable" to being on life support, he is reportedly obsessed with destroying Obama. While it is understandable that Clinton's top adviser wants his client to win at all costs, going massively negative against Obama (or Hillary for that matter) risks damaging our candidate in the fall election against McCain. Unfortunately, this is something another "client" would welcome. That client is named John McCain.

Thanks PB - its not the contractors that are the problem here. I wish that was the problem...would be much easier to deal with. Its quite complicated not counting the 2+ years its taken to just get to this point making me feel like its never going to get done. But thanks for the good thoughts.

Robot bear will carry soldiers to safety

Daring battlefield rescues of wounded comrades may one day be a thing of the past as the US army is developing a robot that can recover injured or abducted soldiers.
Daniel Theobald, president of Maryland-based Vecna Technologies, which is developing Bear, told New Scientist: "We saw a need for a robot that can essentially go where a human can."

Some local poets paid tribute to women in the House of Hunger Poetry Slam held at the Book Café over the weekend.
The honour was held to celebrate the International Women's Day held every year on March 8. The poets among them United States-based Mutaurwa "Foretold" Mapondera, Munamato Gabi popularly known as Vatete, George "Ishkold" Makuyana and renowned filmmaker Olley Maruma took to the stage in a battle for supremacy on Saturday afternoon.
The poets displayed their understanding of women's issues through their poems and made interesting comments on the fairer sex. Maruma recited another poem that looked at the African continent which by then he says was called Ethiopia. Mutaurwa also made his presence felt by reciting a touching poem titled Oru-comrade dedicated to his aunt and liberation war heroine. Vatete who preferred Shona poems wowed audiences with rich Shona language that talked about womanhood and the girl child. The judges had a difficult time in selecting the winners but three poets - Vatete, Makuyana and Mutaurwa were picked as the winners. Vatete and Makuyana walked away with a book apiece while Mutaurwa was given a CD.
Slam master Larry Kwirirayi said the House of Hunger Poetry Slam continued to grow as well as attracting the best talents from around the country.

Carlyle Group default sparks panic selling in New York

Property investment trusts shares have crashed on panic selling in New York after an affiliate of the private equity giant Carlyle Group fell into default on mortgage losses.
Carlyle Capital Corp (CCC) said it had missed margin calls to seven creditors and lacked collateral to cover its trading exposure to mortgage securities.
The news sent shockwaves through the financial markets. Carlyle Capital has leveraged itself to the hilt, taking out debt at a ratio of 32:1 to invest in the US mortgage assets. It held securities worth a $21.7bn (£10.8bn) last month, raising the spectre of distress sales on a scale large enough to trigger a cascade of liquidations by other funds.
Fears of forced sales ravaged real estate investment trusts, which also own big holdings of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debt. Anworth Mortgage shares plunged 24pc and Capstead Mortgage was off 25pc.
Thornburg Mortgage crashed 60pc after revealing an SEC-filing in New York that it had missed a $28m margin call to JP Morgan Chase. It has suffered from the collapse in investor demand for so-called jumbo mortgages.
An analyst report that UBS was engaged in a "fire-sale" of mortgage securities worth $24bn accelerated the flight from risk. Most of the assets are alleged to be Alt A securities, the next notch up from sub-prime. The Dow Jones index fell 164 points in early trading to 12,090.
Traders said Carlyle had been scooping up AAA-rated mortgage securities, believing that they had fallen fall below inherent value. The risky bet - known as "catching a falling knife" - appears similar to the strategy that ensnared the UK hedge fund Peloton Partners, which was forced to close a $2bn fund last week.
The assets were issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, federally-chartered bodies that have an implicit US government guarantee.

Tonight on his show, Keith Olbermann eviscerated Hillary Clinton for a good ten minutes for promoting John McCain's presidency over her fellow Democrats. He compared her to Joe Lieberman. He asked "is she equating her time in the East Wing with McCain's time in the Hanoi Hilton?" You have got to watch these videos. They're devastating in only the way that Keith can be. Imagination and the fifth dimension
Ah, I always love a bit of theoretical physics! - particularly for its "mindfuck" qualities, if you'll pardon the French. I discovered this video entitled Imagining the Tenth Dimension (see below) courtesy of my younger brother who is in his second year of a science degree and who is also interested in the philosophy of science. As far as the content of this video is concerned, I think I'm only convinced up until the fifth dimension.
If we take the idea of "virtual" to describe all of those possibilities in a given set-up that remain un-actualised, it is precisely this which, in the video, is given the name of the "fifth dimension". The first four dimensions (height, width, depth, and duration) all exist in the realm of the "actual", but the fifth dimension onwards exist only in the realm of the virtual. I've thought a lot about the virtual in previous theorisations, but until now, I'd never really thought of it as a "dimension", in the sense that height, width, depth, and duration are. However, I think I like the formulation a lot, and feel it will be incredibly helpful for me in my work!
For instance: So many of us remain trapped within four dimensions, but to become cognizant of the fifth dimension is surely to become aware of the fact that what "is" is only one among infinite possibilities that exist in the virtual, and that at any moment, any one of those possibilities can be actualised through a combination of chance and will. It allows us an appreciation that what "is" is not necessarily what must be, and that things might always be otherwise. Reality, then, becomes reconceived as a dynamic process, rather than in terms of static being. As activists, it is precisely the fifth dimension that is called upon in our imaginations as we both re-imagine how the world might be otherwise and struggle to make that imagined better world a reality! The battle-cry of the World Social Forum says it all: "Another World is Possible!"
I would contend that the imagination emerges as central here, seeing that it is precisely the faculty of the imagination which we employ in order to behold that which does not yet exist in actuality. I would add that the imagination becomes central in another sense too: Let's say we liberate the concept of the imagination from the human psyche and use it to denote the very realm of the virtual; that is, the fifth dimension from which everything emerges or actualises. That which we know and which we take for reality is but one manifestation of an infinite number of possible worlds, and the realm of the actual (i.e. the so-called "real world") is continually transmutating through relay loops back and forth between the fifth dimension. If we apply the term "imagination" to this realm of the virtual, then we might say that reality itself is imaginative!

Hillary Rodham Clinton won't catch Barack Obama in the race for Democratic delegates chosen in primaries and caucuses, even if she wins every remaining contest.
So much for Hillary's comeback. Of course, the media knew this Tuesday night, but it was more fun to pretend like Hillary's momentum (yes, winning a state that she was already expected to win for the past 14 months is now momentum and a comeback) was going to make this an all new race. Now, to be fair, Obama can't reach the magic number of 2,025 total delegates either - not without the help of the Superdelegates. But note that the AP article is now definitively saying that not only can't Hillary reach 2,025 delegates, she also can't even catch up to Obama in terms of pledged (elected) delegates even if she wins every race. That's what we've been saying for the past few weeks. It's over, in terms of elections. Hillary can't catch up to Obama, period. Now all she can do is try to convince the Superdelegates to overturn the will of the people (this is probably the motivation behind her having gone postal the past week, embracing John McCain, telling everyone how qualified he is to be president, etc.) And if the Superdelegates listen to Hillary, and overrule the will of the people by denying the nomination to the first African-American nominee in American history, God help our party, cuz it ain't gonna be pretty.

ASIA MARKETS - Financials suffer big losses on Wall Street slide
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Asian markets suffered heavy losses Friday, reacting to a slide on Wall Street, with the declines led by financials such as Mizuho Financial Group in Tokyo, National Australia Bank in Sydney and HSBC Holdings in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 3% 22,648.14, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index shed 3.3% to 12,632.31.
"Things seem to be getting worse because there is no buying. The (trend of declines) will go on until the end of this quarter and we don't expect any rebound until April," said Francis Lun, general manager at Fulbright Securities in Hong Kong........

Because of that thing with my vote not showing for the State results, I was sent by the local auditor the offical results that are going to be presented to the Board of Sups... and my vote does show there..but anyway you can see on these results something WAY funky...two things really..
one is that it appears that this is a Democratic County..it isn't
and two is this weird thing with the Decline to State vote....
I got my party change in 10 days before the primary and even though the day I called the clerk said that she was mailing out ballots that day, she said I needed to come and pick up my ballot, and to hand deliver it....
I'm not sure what it is exactly that is disturbing...

WASHINGTON – The Senate on Thursday passed the most sweeping reform of the nation's consumer safety system in a generation, including stricter tests for toys, greater public access to complaints about products and an overhaul of the federal safety agency charged with regulating most items in American homes.
The bill, which passed 79-13, is tougher in key areas than a House version approved last year. House and Senate negotiators will meet to reconcile the differences before the bill heads to President Bush.
Both versions of the legislation would significantly reduce the amount of lead allowed in children's products.
A Tribune investigation last year exposed how the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission was so slow to act on complaints about dangerous children's products that children died while regulators failed to spot hazards or promptly recall products. The reports also revealed the scope of products tainted by lead.
The legislation, which grew out of hearings prompted by the "Hidden Hazards" series, seeks to give the agency more power, more staff and more money.
The biggest change for consumers would occur if the Senate provision for a public database of product safety complaints survives. The House version called for simply studying whether to include consumer complaints in such a database.
Currently, consumers who want to know if a product – whether it's a crib, a toy or a chainsaw – has been linked to injuries or deaths, they can only check government recall lists or file public records requests that take months, sometimes years, to arrive. Consumers are left in the dark about emerging hazards while the government investigates and then negotiates recall alerts with companies.
In an attempt to make those recalls more transparent, an amendment inserted Thursday on behalf of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) requires recall notices to include the names and locations of factories where the flawed products were produced. The failure of recall notices to include such information has allowed overseas factories to continue selling tainted products to unwitting U.S. importers that don't know of the factories' troubled track record.
As the lawmakers negotiate a compromise, the areas where lobbying will be most intense include proposals to protect whistle-blowers who expose dangerous products at their companies and a provision to give state attorneys general greater power to enforce safety laws.

In a possible sign of trouble for the GOP, the National Republican Congressional Committee has poured more than $1 million into this Saturday's special election for the vacant seat of former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), who resigned last year.
Democratic candidate Bill Foster, a businessman and physicist, has received the active backing of Barack Obama, who in the midst of the presidential campaign cut an ad just for him. Meanwhile, Hastert led the GOP establishment in giving their early backing to dairy businessman and big-time GOP donor Jim Oberweis, who previously ran three unsuccessful self-financed campaigns, losing the Republican primaries for Senate in 2002 and 2004, and for governor in 2006.
Despite being a historically Republican district that voted 55% for President Bush in 2004, a new SurveyUSA poll shows Foster ahead of Oberweis 52%-47%.
The cash-strapped National Republican Congressional Committee has been forced to invest over $1.2 million, dumping $800,000 into the race last Friday alone. The Democratic Congressional Committee has also thrown over $1 million into this election, according to the latest FEC filings.

So, here is my advice to the new guys: Get Maron back under contract. Do whatever you need to to smooth out the crap that he has been through. Get Seder back on 5 days per week for a few hours; how about the empty morning slot? How about the 9-midnight slot? He has been on early and late and his fans seem to follow. Don't dump the mornings;that's a mistake. Get someone like Maron in place and give him a few years to work though the curve. Look at the very real possibility that Rachel Maddow might have better things to do sooner than you think, and that those things may entice her more than a 3rd hour. Be sure to at least have some hosts on board to fill in, so that you're not scraping around for someone after Seder has worked 7 days in a row.

on the surface this sounds like a plausible explanation for not complaining about kbr cheating the governement out of taxes but maybe its disingenous.
as i've heard it, the pentagon pays about 10x what it would cost to do something when they use a private contractor. so wouldn't they get real cost savings by having soldiers who do the cooking, soldiers who do the laundry, soldiers who drive the fuel trucks?

is this the equivalent of a short squeeze on futures?
overnight the winds were blowing in the direction that we were staring into the abyss and that poor job numbers would put pressure on the market to break thru the current level of support. if that happened, the next bottom was pretty far down, suggesting that today could be quite a shock to the system. of course other partys chimed in and said the fed would jump in and cut rates before the day was out if that happened (sorry but i belong to the camp that says the lower rates are actually making things worse rather than better).

World markets tumble amid US worries
SEOUL, South Korea - Asian and European markets fell Friday after another overnight drop on Wall Street that was spurred by news about rising foreclosures on U.S. mortgages, intensifying concerns about the world's largest economy.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 3.3 percent to close at 12,782.80 as investors sold exporters' shares amid the dollar's drop to a three-year low against the yen during Asian trading.
Hong Hong's Hang Seng index closed down 3.6 percent, bringing its decline since the start of the year to 19 percent.
Australia's benchmark index sank 3.2 percent while in Seoul the Korea Stock Price Index declined 2 percent. India's benchmark Sensex was down 4 percent in afternoon trading, paring earlier losses of over 5 percent.
In early European trading, the U.K.'s benchmark FTSE 100 sank 1.3 percent, while Germany's DAX fell 1.5 percent. France's CAC 40 declined 1.3 percent.

Hedge Funds Frozen Shut
There's a chill spreading across the hedge fund industry. With more portfolios falling victim to the credit crunch, managers by the dozen are freezing investor redemptions, preventing a mad rush to the exits that would force funds to sell beaten-down assets to raise cash. But is this unprecedented move just postponing the day of reckoning for funds and the market?
Since November at least 24 hedge funds have barred or limited investors from taking their money out, tying up tens of billions of dollars for an indefinite period. Among them: GPS Partners, a $1 billion fund that bets mainly on natural gas pipelines; Pursuit Capital Partners, a $650 million portfolio with troubled debt; and Alcentra European Credit, a $500 million fund that owns slumping loans used to finance private equity buyouts. The new rules affect not only the pension funds, endowments, and well-to-do families that buy the funds directly but also smaller individual investors exposed through diversified portfolios of hedge funds, known as funds of funds. Some hedge funds have broad powers under their contracts with investors to make such changes at their discretion. Carlyle Capital Suspended; Lenders Force Asset Sales (Update3)
March 7 (Bloomberg) -- Carlyle Group's mortgage-bond fund was suspended in Amsterdam trading after creditors forced the sale of some holdings, jeopardizing shareholders' capital.
Lenders who issued default notices have liquidated some residential mortgage-backed securities held by the fund and may sell more as talks continue, Carlyle Capital Corp. said in a statement today. The fund had ``substantial'' margin calls and additional default notices from lenders yesterday, it said.
Carlyle Capital said yesterday it had failed to meet margin calls, prompting creditors to seek immediate repayment. Started by David Rubenstein in 1987, Carlyle increased its mortgage holdings last year, selling $300 million of shares in Carlyle Capital. The fund used leverage to buy about $22 billion of AAA rated mortgage debt issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
``This marks a further savage step in the ongoing credit implosion of recent months,'' Keith Baird, an analyst at Bear Stears Cos. in London, wrote in a note to clients today. ``The liquidation of the fund cannot be excluded nor the potential loss of capital, rendering the shares worthless.''

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street's so-called "vulture" debt investors aren't exactly racing to buy billions of dollars of complex U.S. mortgage-related bonds that have sunk in value amid the troubles in global financial markets.
That's a bad omen for banks and other holders of dicey mortgage investments since it shows even the market's riskier players see no bottom to the downward spiral of mortgage defaults, bond rating downgrades, bank losses and stingier lending that is sapping the strength of the U.S. economy.
While mainstream investors might be expected to take flight whenever prices stop making sense and newspaper headlines scream of losses, distressed or "vulture" investors tend to eventually pick over assets more carefully, helping balance markets by providing a floor for thinly-traded bonds.
But despite plummeting prices and a regular drumbeat of fire sales by mortgage vehicles called collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs, many vultures aren't touching subprime mortgage securities with a ten-foot pole.
"The CDO space is in a state of distress beyond repair," says Stuart Goldberg, a managing director at $10.7 billion hedge fund Marathon Asset Management in New York.
"It's a melting ice cube," Goldberg says. "The CDO of (asset-backed securities) is a very different animal than the typical generic distressed marketplace. There are literally deals and many assets within the ABS CDO space that have no value."
