Reports Emerge of Diebold Failures in Montgomery County, Ohio
'40-50 People in Line...4 of 8 Machines Not Working...Poll Workers Didn't Offer Paper Ballots...Get Rid of These Diebold Machines and Get Something That Works!,' Declares one Buckeye Voter
Switch to Paper Ballots Reportedly Going 'Exceptionally Well' in Cuyahoga (Cleveland), So Far, According to New Election Director...
The ever-necessary caveat: Most problems and failures with election systems don't fully begin to reveal themselves until the night of, and more often, the days and weeks following the elections.

That said, this from RAW STORY's compilation article of various reports of trouble so far today, coming out of Ohio...

In southwest Ohio, the Dayton Daily News was collecting voters' tales from the voting booths on Tuesday. Most voters reported a pleasant experience, although some trouble persisted.

"About 40-50 people in line and 1 of the voting machine were down," one commenter wrote. "Waited to 7:00 AM and the line didn’t move 3 more machine went down, now 4 0f the 8 machine not working. The poll worker didn’t offer paper ballot and seemed overhelmed by the process. Let get rid of these Diebold machines and get something that works! I will be back tonite to vote, hope the machines are working by then."

"The district I am in had a line the full length of the gymnasium and there were 4 voting machines down that had been report[ed] 1 1/2 [sic] before but no one had been there to look at [them]," said a commenter from Beavercreek, Ohio. "I talked to several people in line, and everyone seemed to be enthusiastic."

On the other hand, for some good news --- at least for now --- Cuyahoga County (Cleveland)'s new Election Director Jane Platten reports that things were going well there so far today, in the county which has been the center of much controversy for a number of reasons, not the least of which was its recent switch from Diebold touch-screen machines to paper ballots to be scanned at the county by ES&S machines. As of noon today, Platten said things were going "exceptionally good" and that all precincts had been able to open on time. For a change.

In Dayton's Montgomery County, where the report of Diebold touch-screen machine failures above comes from, things are not going quite as well...

ORIGINS OF THE HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE SPELLS

Being a devotee of pronoia doesn't mean you will never have another difficult or painful experience. It doesn't obligate you to pretend everything is perfectly right with the world. You don't have to cover your eyes whenever you come into proximity with a daily newspaper.

On the other hand, we're not going to waste our valuable space or your precious energy by giving equal time to stories of tragedy, failure, and tumult. They get far more than their fair share of attention everywhere else. Future historians might even conclude that our age suffered from a collective obsessive-compulsive disorder: the pathological need to repetitively seek out reasons for how bad life is.

Still, we feel the need to push a bit further in our acknowledgement of all the confusing evils of the world. We realize that what we've said so far may not be sufficient to satisfy the paranoid cynics, who include among their number many well-respected thinkers. Unless we demonstrate that we have some mastery of their ideology, they'll dismiss us as intellectual pussies. They will need proof that we're familiar with the data they favor.

We've decided, therefore, to launch a preemptive strike that will make it harder for the paranoids to dismiss us pronoiacs as naive optimists. On page 67 and at four other places in this book, we've created Homeopathic Medicine Spells. They're designed to recognize the evils of the world, but in a controlled manner that prevents them from poisoning you. In this way, we can also practice what we preach, subverting any tendencies we might have toward fanaticism and unilateralism.

Each Homeopathic Medicine Spell consists of a contained space within which lies a recitation of Very Bad Things. The border around each space is a magical seal that we consecrated during a ritual invocation of the Cackling Goddess Who Eternally Creates Us Anew. Inspired through communion with Her fierce jokes, we also surrounded each seal with good mojo in the form of word charms and talismanic symbols.

As you gaze at the Homeopathic Medicine Spells, you'll be building up your protection against the dangers named inside the contained space.
You'll also get intuitions about how to dissolve the pop nihilistic toxins within you that resonate with those dangers.

Journalist Quits After Station Pulls Republican Vote Buying Story
By: Nicole Belle @ 5:01 PM - PST

KKOB Radio afternoon drive time news anchor Laura MacCallum quit her job last Thursday after the station’s news director pulled her stories about alleged vote-buying efforts at the recent Bernalillo County Republican Party delegate nominating conventions.

MacCallum, a 32-year radio and TV news veteran who has worked in Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles, said the station caved to complaints from Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s Senate campaign about the stories. Wilson campaign spokeswoman Whitney Cheshire called the station to argue the unfairness of stories alleging that many delegates to the ward conventions were paid by Wilson’s and other campaigns to show up and cast their votes for certain delegates.

Critics of the alleged vote-buying effort say it was an unfair scheme to lock out any challengers to Wilson’s senate and Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White’s congressional campaigns

KKOB News Director Pat Allen said the stories were pulled, not because of the campaign’s complaints, but because he felt they lacked corroboration and that a source in some of MacCallum’s stories, former New Mexico Governor Dave Cargo, was bitter because he wasn’t elected as a delegate to the upcoming state Republican Party nominating convention.

But here’s the best part: one of the reasons cited by the station manager for not running the story is because it “would have been picked up by bloggers” and other news agencies if it was valid.

We know that Heather Wilson has been guilty of placing pressure on the US Attorney’s office in the past, it’s certainly within her character to try to squelch a story like this, which could cost her her seat.

Moses was high on drugs: Israeli researcher

Mar 4 07

High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.

Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."

He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.

He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

Yoko Ono on Lennon's art: 'He would not have minded'
By Bill DeYoung
Thursday, February 28, 2008

PALM BEACH GARDENS

As the keeper of John Lennon's flame, Yoko Ono is the motivator behind "A Day in the Life," a touring exhibition of her late husband's artwork.

Lennon was a compulsive doodler, filling one sketchbook after another with quirky, whimsical drawings. After his death in 1980, Ono started pulling them out of drawers and file cabinets; "A Day in the Life" includes more than 100 pieces spanning the years 1968 to '80.

They aren't original works, but limited edition copies, many of which have had color added. In this interview, Ono, who just turned 75, explains how and why she overcame the thought of "sacrilege."

I didn't stick around for resolutions, just the presidential caucus. 52% went Obama, 48% Clinton. Each side grabbed 13 delegates to send to the county on March 30th from 1 till 8pm (yuck).

I would SERIOUSLY have to doubt their love of little baby Jesus if they didn't take a stand and vote as God, up to the point of McCain trouncing God's Own Huckster in the primaries, commanded them to.

McCain's defeat of Huckle-Chuckles is manifest evidence that Satan is alive and well on the planet, and that Christo-Fascisti everywhere must join hands in prayer and defeat McCain... for little blonde baby Jesus!

I watched the Hillary supporters today. Good peeps. I saw no Rethugs at the caucus during the convention.

I volunteered to sign people into the convention to help my neighbor out. He gave me the instructions and the two other volunteers heard it with me.

I interpreted the directions slightly differently. There were about 300 people in the cafeteria. With only half a dozen people signing others in, I assumed I didn't have to hold the pen for the caucus attendees. Instead, I verified they could attend, gave them the instructions from the chairman and handed out pens. Others filled out the forms for them. The results were that I signed in at 3 times the rate as others so I met many of my neighbors.

One particular Hillary supporter had a disability (stroke) and we filled the sign-in sheet together. She was a sweet lady. Another - was a biker. Good people.

Rep. Heather Wilson Accused

Rep. Heather Wilson Accused of Felony Vote-Buying in New Mexico; Reporter Quits After News Director Scrubs Story

Republican Delegate Convention Attendees Paid by Wilson Senate Campaign, According to Report Sourced by Three Eye-Witnesses, Removed from Website After Complaints to Station by Wilson

Memo From News Director to Reporter: 'Don't you think if there was anything to it the bloggers would have picked this up?'

The short version, however: New Mexico's ABC field producer and KKOB afternoon drive news reporter, Laura MacCallum, a 32-year news veteran, has quit her job after her story on an alleged vote-buying scheme by Republican Rep. Heather Wilson at the recent delegate nominating convention in Bernalillo County, New Mexico was scrubbed from her station's website by the News Director after allegedly pressure from Wilson.

The sitting Congresswoman is angling for an upgrade, as she hopes to be the state's Republican nominee to fill the Senate seat being vacated by outgoing Republican Pete Domenici. MacCallum's report, sourced by at least three different people, including herself, said that voters showed up to the delegate convention and claimed they were being were "paid $35-an-hour (for two hours)" by Wilson's senate campaign and the congressional campaign of Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, "and that the campaigns had also paid their $30 registration fees."

Such a scheme, if true, would be a fourth-degree felony, according to New Mexico law. But as remarkable as those charges are, even if having the ring of truth, given what we already know about Wilson, the response, including the memo from KKOB News Director Pat Allen to MacCallum, is almost as remarkable...

transient ischemic attack:

A transient ischemic attack, or TIA, is often described as a mini-stroke. Unlike a stroke, however, the symptoms can disappear within a few minutes. TIAs and strokes are both caused by a disruption of the blood flow to the brain. In TIAs and most strokes, this disruption is caused by a blood clot blocking one of the blood vessels leading to the brain. The blockage produces symptoms such as sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden dimming or loss of vision, and difficulty speaking or understanding speech. If the symptoms are caused by a TIA, they last less than 24 hours and do not cause brain damage...

Alice, dear Alice!

I am working towards my Librarian's degree... Specifically my Master's of Library Sciences degree.... but right now all I have is an AA+ and have worked in the college library since 2003.

Next on the agenda is getting the BA (that's enough from you Crank!) at Holyoke... but they want to decimate my AA credits so it will take quite a while to get even that. Then off to the UW to finish up the Master's (MLS). At this rate I will be an "Official" Librarian... and about 87 years old when I'm done.

You can be a Library tech (various levels) with an AA, but that's not a "real" librarian (so the "real" Librarians say).

Working towards? What? I thought you got it like a year ago!

hmm..seems there's something to be desired as far as my reading comprehension! jeez..ok..

87 years...fuck.

-want to decimate my AA credits-

In my in-person orientation for school the program director mentioned this whole "thing" about xfering credits..is that what you mean?

I'm doing the lib tech thing online and am in the tail end of my first ONE CREDIT of 26.5 credits for the certificate...the AA requires things that are beyo9nd my comprehension... basic math and public speaking being just two of them...

Ah - Alice OK now I Understand

I am done with my active studies in relation to my degrees.
Undergrad was psychology and also religion (religion is my hobby now) My other degree is an M.Ed. in Special Ed, developmental disabilities concentration and a teaching certification in the same. Other certifications for teaching in areas non-related ie my wall street world and other finance topics, but that would bore anyone, and I can't remember the list too well these days anyway.

Now, I don't really study anything, but enjoy learning all kinds of things, some are revisits of topics and areas from the past, and some are new interests.

But, as you know most of my time lately has been spent on legal paperwork, house building stuff and now decorating plans.

Thanks for asking, and I hope this makes some sense as migraine meds are kicking in.

This is the part I was asking you Neff-Kitti...

Goolsbee An Expensive

Goolsbee An Expensive Indulgence?
It's hard to say whether this has any necessary connection to the NAFTA stuff. But a lot of the suspicion in liberal policy circles toward Obama centered on Goolsbee and his positions on Social Security and social insurance generally. What's ironic about the NAFTA/Goolsbee thing is Clinton's actually the candidate who's always been basically pro-NAFTA whereas Obama's the reverse. So I wonder if having Goolsbee around (who I suspect, based on other policy positions but don't specifically, is pro-NAFTA) came back to bite Obama.

Late Update: TPM Reader NBL chimes in ...

I'm an Ohio native and can tell you that many people I talked to referenced Obama's 'double talk' (their words, not mine) on NAFTA as their reason for switching to Clinton. They said they don't trust Clinton, but now they don't trust Obama either. I've always wondered what would happen if someone punctured Obama's aura of integrity and trustworthiness. I guess Ohio gave us the answer. I just never thought it would be someone on his own team that did the puncturing.
My biggest fear now is that the turf wars within the Clinton camp will lead Penn to aggressively push the idea (wrongly) that the '3AM' ad was what put them over the top. If Penn wins the battle of egos, the Clinton campaign could go hardcore negative and end up handing the presidency to McCain. I guess I should expect as much from a campaign built by people (not Clinton, her advisers) who care more about the credit and blame than on what actually works.

p.s: I was raised and went to college in Ohio. For much of that time I worked on local and statewide Democratic campaigns. Trust me when I say NAFTA is a BIG issue among Democrats there.

Clinton Takes Texas MSNBC

Clinton Takes Texas
MSNBC and Fox call Texas for Obama.

Remember, that's the popular vote in the primary. That accounts for 126 of the Texas delegates; 67 more are up for grabs in the caucus. The Texas primary has no bonus for getting an overall win. So with the margin this close, that's probably a tie in delegates -- even conceivable that Obama picks up more because of the way the apportionment works. But assume that's basically a wash. Then there's the caucus. People assume, though that's only based on earlier caucuses, that Obama will win there. So keep in mind the very distinct possibility, even a probability, that Obama will take more delegates out of Texas than Clinton, even assuming he narrowly loses the primary part of the contest.

Chronic pain and meds - its possible that one of the meds could be causing the sleep problem. Some people have an opposite reaction to meds that usually make most people tired. So that would be the first thing I suggest you look into.I think that is a real possibility. Also remember that while it may be true that others may have it worse than you it does you no good to devalue your own individual experience - your experience is just as valid as all others experiences. So a part of this could also be your point of view and state of mind.
Depending on what meds you take for pain - check the side effects on the info sheet. and then keep track of what happens when you take them to see if sleeplessness is part of your individual reaction to any of them... or any of the other meds you might be taking.
Also, taking something for sleep, is not always what is needed - granted I am not a doctor so am not qualified to rx anything...but you mentioned the anxiety and depression that goes along with the pain and not being able to work... those 2 together or seperately, could be part of the cause of your having problems sleeping.
Again, I think the best thing to start with is to keep a medication and sleep and lack thereof journal - to see if a pattern is existing - this will provide you with data to present to your doctors when you find the cause or causes or lack of causes when you go to ask for help.
Example - if its anxiety - keeping your brain working overtime and thus keeping your brain and body from going into rest and sleep mode...something for anxiety to cause the brain to rest to allow you to sleep might be what you need... or, if its one of your pain meds providing an atypical reaction of not sleeping when many do make others sleepy...that may be something to work on with your doctors to counter-act. You get the idea. But a diary will be the best data and resource for you to have to find the solution to the current status which is not working for you.

As for me, my insomnia was a long time ago, and based on very different circumstances. It was caused by extreme stress and my body going into over drive and not being able to get it out of the stress reaction mode. It took me working with a great doctor and finding the right combo of treatment and course of action for me to get past what was pure hell. I didn't sleep normally or even naturally for over 2 months. It was just aweful. Eventually they had me taking something they give patients before surgery - before they take you into the operating room - just to get my body to rest - I got 5 hours of "sleep" tops per night with it...just enough to keep me from falling apart physically.
What finally changed, was my living situation, and thankfully my life situation made a change big enough to remove me from the situation that was causing me more stress than I could handle, and while it took me a long time to recover from the entire insomnia and related stress experience... I vowed to never be in that situation again...and that determination - despite this later events change in my life of fibro and having to retire etc... I have never allowed myself to get pulled back into that world of that stress level and environment which brought on the insomnia in the first place.

I don't know if this has helped much or not. But, by taking charge of everything I can be in charge of, and taking pre-ventive and pre-emptive measures I have made sure that the conditions that allowed the insomnia to happen the first time, have never been allowed to happen again...BUT please remember - my insomnia was a totally different animal than yours is.

When it comes to sleep problems now, if I cannot sleep because of the fibro or migraine or whatever... I don't worry about it...and just make sure to take good care of myself and go with the flow...knowing that i will eventually sleep because my body will require it.

And bottomline - if I can't control it, whatever it is, I just let it go...

So, try the sleep/med reaction diary to begin with...that will give you the basis from which to start your investigation.

hope this helps and good luck. I know you will figure it out.

Subprime Obama

Excerpts:

As the subprime mortgage debacle drives a recession that threatens financial markets around the world, the Democratic presidential candidates are pushing plans to address the crisis. John Edwards and Hillary Clinton are pledging substantial federal resources to stabilize the mortgage market and intervene on behalf of borrowers.

Barack Obama's proposal is tepid by comparison, short on aggressive government involvement and infused with conservative rhetoric about fiscal responsibility.

As he has done on domestic issues like healthcare, job creation and energy policy, Obama is staking out a position to the right of not only populist Edwards but Clinton as well.

Austan Goolsbee, an economist at the University of Chicago who calls himself a "centrist market economist," has been most directly involved with crafting Obama's subprime agenda.

In a column last March in the New York Times, Goolsbee disputed whether "subprime lending was the leading cause of foreclosure problems," touted its benefits for credit-poor minority borrowers and warned that "regulators should be mindful of the potential downside in tightening [the mortgage market] too much."

In October, no less a conservative luminary than George Will devoted a whole column in the Washington Post to saluting Goolsbee's "nuanced understanding" of traditional Democratic issues like globalization and income inequality and concluded that he "seems to be the sort of fellow--amiable, empirical, and reasonable--you would want at the elbow of a Democratic president, if such there must be."

Goolsbee, Moore, and the Beige Bomber

Michael Moore and the Beige Bomber

by Austan Goolsbee

Excerpts:

Michael Moore's shtick cracks me up. As entertainment, most of his movies are great fun.

In Sicko, though, he goes beyond his usual ranting. After spending the first half of the movie railing against the American health-care system, he actually puts forward a policy prescription.

Moore thinks the United States should adopt a free, single-payer, national health system like Canada, the United Kingdom, France, or Cuba—socialized medicine, in the words of his critics.

    -----------------

For Moore, though, the answer is not reform of the current system. It is having the government run it all. He sets out on a worldwide tour to show us how great a single-payer system is in countries that have it.

    ---------------------
    Goolsbee says:

So, to do as Moore wants in the United States, you would need to do more than just overcome the insurance industry.

You would need to cut the salaries of doctors, reform the legal system, enrage our allies by causing their prescription drug costs to escalate, and accustom patients to a central decision-maker authorized to determine what procedures they are and are not allowed to get. Unless every one of these changes comes together, Moore's new system would end up costing an enormous amount of money.

    -------------

I used to have an old, old car that my friends called The Beige Bomber. It constantly had problems. Every time something went wrong, I had to decide whether to pay the $300 to fix it or shell out many thousands to get a new car. Eventually, yes, it completely died and I had to buy a new car. But I held out as long as I could.

As the credits rolled on Sicko, and I still sat in Michael Moore land, I couldn't help but think that we've got ourselves a Beige Bomber of a health system.

A lot of stuff goes wrong with it, but to replace the whole thing would cost a hell of a lot of money. Moore thinks the car is already broken down beyond repair.

The metaphor isn't perfect, though, I realized after I left the theater. All cars have to be replaced; our health-care system, if improved, could live for a very long time. And so we shouldn't forget that Moore is glossing over the huge costs of an overhaul, in his urge to rush.

Digby Sez: "Netroots Failed Miserably..."

I agree with digby. I thought that the liberal side of the blogosphere would fight back against the corporate media bias.

It's been dismal reading the sexist and misogynistic comments and posts on various liberal blogs (including this one).

-----------------------

Pressing Issues

by digby

The blogosphere is all abuzz about this outrageous Charlotte Allen piece in the WaPo yesterday saying women are dumb.

It was over the top, but frankly I'm a little bit surprised that everyone is so shocked. It doesn't seem much more obscene than the fare we've heard from the right for years.

Moreover, it's not even as derisive and demeaning as many things I've read on the liberal side of the blogosphere (or in my comment section) in the past few months. It's bad, but it's just par for the course as far as I can tell. The idea that sexism is politically incorrect is laughable.

    ------

I have received approximately 350 emails similar to that just in the last six months. It's so commonplace, people don't even mention it anymore.

The fact that Clinton kept going, becoming a senator, then the first woman to ever win a presidential primary and continues to put herself out there in the face of that kind of psychopathic bile is a testament to her tenacity and commitment. Everybody says they want a fighter. Regardless of who you vote for, the woman deserves respect for refusing to back down from that lizard brain sludge.

And I would warn that if unfair and biased press coverage and right wing smears are now a disqualification for elected office, then I think we'd better think long and hard about whether the Democrats are going to be viable as a political party. Smears and bad press for Democrats is part of the package.

I would also add that I thought it was understood to be part of the Netroots job to fight back media bias against all Democratic candidates, even if, as individuals, we were pulling for a particular one over the other.

That did not happen and I think the Netroots failed miserably in one of its primary missions this time out.

Kristol and McCain - So Happy Together

Question on a previous thread:

I wonder if...
...William The Bloody is on Hillary's payroll?

__________________

Actually, Kristol supports McCain.

(I was wondering if this was a joke -- considering the extensive archive of his writings against both Hillary and Bill Clinton. I could add Gore, Kerry, Edwards, and a list of other Democrats that he has smeared.)

It’s All About Him

by William Kristol

Excerpts:

Obama likes to say, "we are the change that we seek" and "we are the ones we’ve been waiting for." Obama’s rhetorical skill makes his candidacy appear almost collective rather than individual. That’s a democratic courtesy on his part, and one flattering to his followers. But the effectual truth of what Obama is saying is that he is the one we’ve been waiting for.

Barack Obama is an awfully talented politician.

But could the American people, by November, decide that for all his impressive qualities, Obama tends too much toward the preening self-regard of Bill Clinton, the patronizing elitism of Al Gore and the haughty liberalism of John Kerry?

It’s fitting that the alternative to Obama will be John McCain.

He makes no grand claim to fix our souls. He doesn’t think he’s the one everyone has been waiting for.

He’s more proud of his country than of himself. And his patriotism has consisted of deeds more challenging than "speaking out on issues."

Finally, read the following article. (Although I believe Kristol is serious in this article, the bad writing almost passes as comedy.)

Democrats Should Read Kipling

by William Kristol

Kristol asks at the end:

Is this generation of Democrats capable of governing?
