Tensions are high in the Andes following a Colombian military attack in neighboring Ecuador. A leading commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia–FARC–and twenty other fighters were killed Saturday when Colombian troops crossed the Ecuadorian border in a pre-dawn raid. Lucille. Yesterday was grey cold and wet. We got a light dusting of snow that did not stick. I'm taking the day off to listen to Sam and go vote. So far I've got one load of laundry done and I washed the doggie. She hates getting in the bath but just loves the warm water and all of the attention. One of the small benefits of having to retire so early was the ability to roll over my 401K's into IRAs and take them out of the volitility, altho even with the probs, this past year my 401Ks were doing quite well. But now everything was re-aligned already based on whats been happening and is set for the long haul.
NOW, all I really want is my HOUSE!!! - which once again...is the investment for the long haul...and of course the fact that I need a place to live so I can get out of the damn hotel. Not too much to ask...

Mortgage rates were always tied to Bond rates. I don't know if this is true today, but when I was selling real estate, that was the case. Another symptom of the housing bubble. And that could be why mortgage rates are up today even thoug the bank rate has been lowered.

Many ordinary people invest with the intention of having a pool of liquid capital from which to draw during the later years of their lives. When that time arrives, they do not have a "long haul" horizon that will allow them to weather a bad market.

In other words, if you had a $100,000 portfolio eight years ago when you did not need to draw down on it, and it is now a $70,000 portfolio while you have no choice but to draw down on it, you are fucked by nothing more complicated than the unlucky timing of your birth.

In other, other words, the long haul strategy does not ensure that short-term market downturns will not bite you in the ass.

I agree and know that the long haul does not cure all ills, beleive me, I spent years working on wall street so I know all too well how the markets work from the inside.
But, most people do not have the background and experience that I do - or that Dan does, so we both agree with your comments. And of course investing in the stock market is always based on taking a risk. That is why it is best to not have all your investments no matter if its 100 or 100K all in the same type of stock, bond, mutual fund.... Planning for the short and long term is key and making sure that you have the right information and the right person be it yourself or someone else working for you managing your investment in YOUR best interest is the best thing you can do for your future.
