My Sign
Pisces: February 19—March 20
Neptune, God of the Sea and master of illusion and mystery, rules Pisces. Those born under this sign have an affinity for the performing arts, music, writing…anything that allows them to dream and create a more beautiful world. This same tendency toward illusion can also be expressed in self-delusion, as Pisces would rather ignore anything that isn’t in keeping with their lovely vision of the world. Pisceans possess a high level of emotional intelligence, easily perceiving the feelings of those around them, which makes them wonderful teachers and guides of the soul.

No Controversy
Rachel Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) was an American member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) who traveled to the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada. She died close to the border with Egypt while trying to obstruct a Caterpillar D9 armoured bulldozer, operated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). [*]The circumstances and the question of responsibility for her death remain controversial.[!]
There is no controversy. She was crushed by a bulldozer driven by an Israeli Army person while trying to stop Palestinian homes from getting destroyed. Oh yeah, fault. Fault. Israel's policies? or the US's enabling of those policies?
There is a book recently published of Rachel's writings.

Jack Kerouac, Charlie Parker
Charlie Parker
Charlie Parker looked like Buddha
Charlie Parker, who recently died
Laughing at a juggler on the TV
After weeks of strain and sickness,
Was called the Perfect Musician.
And his expression on his face
Was as calm, beautiful, and profound
As the image of the Buddha
Represented in the East, the lidded eyes
The expression that says "All Is Well"
This was what Charlie Parker
Said when he played, All is Well.
You had the feeling of early-in-the-morning
Like a hermit's joy, or
Like the perfect cry of some wild gang
At a jam session,
"Wail, Wop"
Charlie burst his lungs to reach the speed
Of what the speedsters wanted
And what they wanted
Was his eternal Slowdown.

Howard Kurtz takes the bobble head prize today
1 - Triple feeding ABC's Katy Snow the Russert Farrakhan BHO jab multiple times
2 - Expressing righteous indignation about Alter's observation that for all intents and purposes the race is over and the hyena should gather up her carpetbags and skedaddle back to her den in the boonies or to DC BACK TO WORKING "HARD" to do the "HARD" WORK we pay her for toot-sweet (actually they print their own money out of thin air, so technically she works for the FRB and who ever bought the last batch of T-bills, which might explain her stalwart loyalty to the constitution and support for Wexler and HR333, NOT!!! Why don't I blame the black guy? Because he only been inside the BELTWAY CESSPOOL for a matter of months, and oh yea he's the token black guy NOT a DLC HEAVYWEIGHT.)
I couldn't hold back the vomit after that, so there may be more slime that oozed out of his pie hole which I missed.
In my mind there's a minute fraction of a degree's difference between Face the Nation's Scheier, Russert, Kurtz and Tucker when it comes to the false pretence of being neutral annalists, 90% of the time. In South Park terms, there all g0p ball lickers. I fear that Stephanopoulos is just plain old retarded, either that or it's the shrooms in his designer scones that's having an MK-ULTRA effect on him.
And this whole spchiel about the primary race not being over; their feigned ignorance about their vested interest in drawing it out to fill time in their cock & bull programs is intellectual dishonesty, insincere cognitive dissonance, a ton of reeking bullshit and insulting.

at Easter time, the stores sold baby chicks, ducks, and rabbits. Someone gave me a baby duck who used to follow me everywhere. When he started to grow, we took him to a farm in Central Illinois to live out his life.
I think it is cruel to sell these creatures to kids. Not all were like I was and these poor things suffered. Hope they don't do that any more.

Always COSTS TOO MUCH?Why
Always COSTS TOO MUCH?
Why is it when Healthcare-for-All is discussed, so many respond with "It's too expensive!"
Same thing happens in discussing controlling pollution, maintaining quality democraticization of education, preserving habitats, restoring the infrastructure, improved prenatal care, teaching art and music in schools, developing clean energy to replace filthy petroleum, making mass transit successful locally and coast to coast...it always "COSTS TOO MUCH! Forget it. Enough said."
But I never hear this cost effectiveness argument dismissing THE IRAQ OCCUPATION, or THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL CONGRESSIONAL MEDIA COMPLEX, or the TOTALLY publicly subsidized Nuclear Power Boondoggle (which has consistently siphoned funding ways from clean energy alternatives), or the farm subsidies for Big Agribusiness, or subsidies for Big Oil like the depletion allowance, or outsourcing government jobs (for example, Blackwater-style mercenary forces guarding embassies now), or the no-bid contract system of Bushworld war- and disaster-profiteering, and the ENTIRE off-the-record BLACK BUDGET and the federal spending of secrecy institutions like the NSA et al.
Services and programs that build, protect and maintain our country and us citizens cost little compared to the INFINITE BUDGETS given to these Monster Money Suckers above. It's time to redirect monies to programs that will make us a stronger nation right down to the individual citizen.
Friday (I think) Sam had a caller who talked at length about the Coagulation of Plastic refuse (Plastistan, he called it?) that is forming in the Pacific Ocean, growing larger all the time, evidently damaging sea life and threatening to lead to the collapse of the oceans. I mentioned to someone who had also heard the show that perhaps this plastic waste mess should be MINED as soon as possible and be used for such things as aggragate in concrete mix we can use to rebuild our infrastructure like dykes (say, around New Orlean), roads (replacing the bulk of the asphalt--asphalt roads are part of the gas-car-AsphaltRoads MONEY STREAM of the Big Oil Guys!), and as an ingredient in recycled plastic 'lumber', etc. It is IMPERATIVE to contain the plastics we've already made (and, of course, stop making new plastic oil by-products altogether and move back to ceramics and glass). The person's response was -- it would be just "too expensive". It was futile to make him see that at some point the mindset that says the profit motive alone where the cost effective formula says the difference between $9.99 and $10.99 dictates when it isn't worth stopping the collapse of the oceans has to be replaced with "We make this work no matter what the cost."
Here's my instant wish list for change:
o Stop the Waste Stream in its tracks -- End the Synthetic Age based on Oil and its by-products and waste products
o Restore the Earth's 'lungs' -- REFORESTATION
o Turn scientific research loose on finding small-scale, locally-based, sustainable living -- in energy, agriculture, natural and preventive medicine, geographically-based/location-based wise architectural design, local rail for people and freight, and so on....

Russia's new man could bring
Russia's new man could bring thaw, reform
Gazprom, Sberbank, LSG Group likely to do well under Medvedev regime
By Aude Lagorce, MarketWatch
Last update: 6:43 p.m. EST March 2, 2008
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's new president, could foster better relations with the West and bring about market-friendly reforms.
In an election whose outcome was almost certain before polling began, Medvedev won with 68% of the vote Sunday, according to Russian election officials. Medvedev built the insurmountable lead on returns from about half the nation's polling stations.
Of the four candidates running, Medvedev, 42, who is deputy prime minister in the current government, had been widely predicted as victor since securing the endorsement of outgoing President Vladimir Putin, who still enjoys high levels of popularity.
Opinion polls suggested Medvedev would win 60% to 80% of the vote.
Given the almost guaranteed outcome, the most pressing question for markets is how much power will remain concentrated in Putin's hands, Credit Suisse analysts wrote in a note to clients. Putin has already accepted an offer to be Medvedev's prime minister.

Israeli Says Comment Manipulated
By Associated Press
12:32 PM CST, March 2, 2008
JERUSALEM
An Israeli official who sparked an uproar by using the word for "holocaust" to describe what Israel might do to the Gaza Strip said Sunday his comment had been manipulated by the media but acknowledged he could have chosen another term.
In a radio interview Friday discussing Palestinian rocket fire at Israel and Israel's military response, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai said, "As the rocket fire grows, and the range increases ... they are bringing upon themselves a greater 'shoah' because we will use all our strength in every way we deem appropriate."
The Hebrew word "shoah" refers to the Nazi Holocaust, but also means "disaster," and a spokesman for Vilnai immediately clarified he meant the latter.
Nonetheless, many international media outlets translated it as "holocaust" and the statement was taken by many in the Arab world to mean that Israel was threatening the Palestinians with genocide.
On Saturday, Palestinian leaders from both Hamas and Fatah called Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip, which has killed dozens of people, a "holocaust" and "genocide."
In Syria, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal described Israeli killings of civilians in Gaza as "the real Holocaust."
"It's clear to everyone that I used it to mean 'disaster' or 'catastrophe,'" Vilnai said Sunday in an interview with Army Radio, charging the media with "manipulating" his words.
"You can use other words, absolutely," Vilnai acknowledged, "but that shouldn't divert us from the main point, which is that they are bringing a disaster on their people because of their actions."

Abbas breaks contact with Israel
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has suspended contact with Israel in protest at an assault on Gaza which has killed about 100 people, an aide says.
The suspension came amid demonstrations in Gaza and fresh clashes with Israeli troops in the West Bank.
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert vowed to carry on the assault, which came in response to militant rocket attacks on Israel.
The violence intensified on Saturday, when nearly 70 people were killed in one of Gaza's bloodiest days in years.
The dead included at least 13 Palestinians civilians and two Israeli soldiers.
The negotiations are suspended, because in light of the Israeli aggression such communication has no meaning
Mahmoud Abbas
Egypt said it had opened its border crossing with Gaza and was letting critically injured Palestinians across to get medical attention.
Reports say at least 100 people will be allowed in.
The fighting has drawn international calls for restraint, with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the US urging both sides to halt the violence.
But Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said his country needed to prepare for an escalation of its air and ground operations in Gaza.

MEDICARE for all COSTS TOO MUCH ... NOT!!!
How paying premiums to a NOT FOR PROFIT govt insurance co, ie MEDICARE whose overhead is tiny when compared to the private ones, each of whom has a duplicate infrastructure, could cost more for the consumers, is the wrong question. The reason being, IT CANT COST MORE!!!
The question is how to gracefully phase out the scam artists who have been conniving to deny claims and delay or disapprove medical procedures that they deem superfluous, despite the fact that they have been prescribed by a MD who has already evaluated the case.
Hospitals like the ones the FRISYPANTS clan owns, that have been caught defrauding the govt for mega millions with false claims would be shut down quickly, since the new IT system would spot fraudsters 10 times quicker. So it's a matter of switching their revenue stream from ripping off the govt, to BLOOD DIAMONDS or other such VULTURE CAPITAL venture that matches their personalities, ScAlito gene.
There is a COST SAVINGS that makes the system not only less expensive to operate than the private corporations, but since they instantly track trends in ailments, they can focus R&D and dispense prophylactic measures according to trend lines. Thus incrementally increase their efficiency further in rapid succession.
THERE IS NO DOWN SIDE TO MEDICARE FOR ALL, PERIOD!!!
Those with expertise in the current industry hierarchy merely have to pass a pisstest to get a FED job, and the grunts can pick up the phone bank positions that become available when they shut down the INDIA operation that put 100,000 operators in the US out of work. If FAIR-TRADE is enacted it will cost little, or no more to operate here than it does to create vast income disparities that disrupt and interfere with the social evolution of cultures over seas.
This is just a part of a STOP SHIPPING US JOBS OVERSEAS - KILL NAFTA et. al. PLAN!!!
It's all laid out in Kucinich's campaign materials, that when BHO takes office he would be wise to assimilate into his agenda wholesale. That is if he wants to stop the hemorrhaging, the impending doom of a DEPRESSION once this recession hits bottom by the end of the year.
What would be nice is if they started impeachment hearings NOW, so they could get some shit done before the end of the year with the Vader-shrubs replacements in the 4th qtr.

My favorite comments expressed (so far) during tonight's 60 Minutes came from a guy standing next to a busy road while holding a sign touting his choice for President of the United States. His group of advocates claimed to have been keeping an informal poll of opinions.
"How do you know if they agree with you?" he was asked.
His answer: "If they give you the thumbs-up, they agree. If they give you the finger, they disagree. Those are pretty much international symbols, aren't they?"

The leftist leader warned Colombia's U.S.-allied government that Venezuela will not permit acts like Saturday's killing of top rebel leader Raul Reyes and 16 other Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia guerrillas at a camp across the border in Ecuador.
"Mr. Defense Minister, move 10 battalions to the border with Colombia for me, immediately — tank battalions, deploy the air force," Chavez said during his weekly TV and radio program. "We don't want war, but we aren't going to permit the U.S. empire, which is the master (of Colombia) ... to come to divide us."
He ordered the Venezuelan Embassy in Bogota closed and said all embassy personnel would be withdrawn. It pushes already tense relations between the South American neighbors to their lowest point yet, with potentially far-reach effects on billions of dollars in cross-border trade.

US Personnel to Train Pakistan Military Officers in Counter-Insurgency Warfare

Mar 02, 2008 13:48 EST
U.S. trainers will travel to Pakistan this year to teach military officials counterinsurgency techniques to aid soldiers along the Afghan border in the fight against al-Qaida and Taliban militants, U.S. officials said Sunday.
The training will also leave the Pakistani border force better able to cooperate with U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, a U.S. military official said.
Twenty-two U.S. trainers will arrive in "drips and drabs" this year and could be in place as soon as June or as late as October, the military official said on condition he not be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Militant attacks have increased sharply in Pakistan's border region in the last year. More than 40 people were killed in a suicide bombing in the North West Frontier Province on Sunday, the third suicide blast in the region in as many days.
Rising attacks in Pakistan have led to a corresponding drop in attacks across the border in eastern Afghanistan — where the majority of the 28,000 American troops in the country are based. But officials are worried the increasing instability is allowing al-Qaida to re-establish a presence in the border region.

"DSL and Cable internet are the same price as dial up too."
Not true here!
DSL is cheaper, if you can get it. Not all areas have it. I pay 14.99 a month for AT&T lowest speed DSL. Comcast is faster, yes, but it is $39.99 a month. You can get a 6 month promo offer for $19.99 a month but then it reverts to the $39.99.
Not all areas are covered.
I was talking to a guy that works for AT&T and he said they are waiting til next year to use the bands that are now used by TV, when all will be converted to HDTV. They are going completely wireless. He said that all the country would then be able to get wireless. Wonder how much that will cost?

Corrie family asks court to reinstate case against Caterpillar
by AP
published in The International Herald Tribune
SEATTLE: The family of a woman killed trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home in 2003 asked a federal appeals court panel to reinstate its lawsuit against Caterpillar Inc., saying the company knew bulldozers it sold to the Israeli government were being used to commit human rights violations.
“Caterpillar sold this product knowing — or it should have known — it would cause exactly this harm,” one of the family’s lawyers, Duke University law professor Erwin Chemerinsky told the three judges from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday.
Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old peace activist from Olympia, Washington, was crushed by a 60-ton Israeli bulldozer as she stood before a Palestinian home in the Gaza Strip.
Her parents, Cindy and Craig Corrie, sued Peoria, Illinois-based Caterpillar, which manufactured the bulldozer, seeking to hold the company civilly liable for aiding and abetting human rights violations — the destruction of civilian homes.
Four Palestinian families whose relatives were killed or injured when the Israeli Defense Forces flattened their homes joined the Corries in filing suit.

United Technologies Makes $3 Billion Offer to Acquire Diebold

United Technologies Corp. said Sunday it has made an offer to buy Diebold Inc. for $3 billion.
United Technologies, parent company of jet engine-maker Pratt & Whitney, Otis elevator and Sikorsky Aircraft, said it made the offer to Diebold on Friday.
Diebold, based in Canton, Ohio, makes ATMs, business security systems and voting machines.
The purchase price represents United Technologies' offer of $40 per share, about two-thirds higher than Diebold's closing stock price Friday of $24.12.
"This transaction creates significant and immediate value for Diebold shareholders with no operational risk, while creating long term value for UTC shareholders," George David, United Technologies' chairman, said in a news release.
"Diebold represents an excellent fit with UTC, with its strong market position, U.S. footprint and balance between product and service revenues," he said.
"We are committed to working with Diebold's board of directors to enter quickly into a definitive agreement," David said.

If the beginning premise is (as it is for me) that society has no reason to exist beyond the support of its members, then the "winners and losers" argument is moot.
It is my belief that no economy, no system of government, and no faith in the supernatural can obviate the existence of poverty and wealth, caste by birth, the lucky and the unlucky, the healthy and the unhealthy, and the motivated and the slackers. If this is true, then a disenfranchised population is a fact to be addressed with compassion, not a problem that can be eliminated.
The disenfranchised population can be reduced by clever societal manipulation. It can be increased by bumbled societal manipulation. It cannot be eliminated.
Therefore, it always exists to one degree or another.
I can read between the lines.
I have a recommendation for the storage of that information.

Selling Housing Aid Proposals in Washington Means Staying Out of Bailout Neighborhood
ALAN ZIBEL
AP News
Mar 02, 2008 16:07 EST
Bailout is a dirty word in the nation's capital. Lately, efforts by both Democrats and Republicans to clean up the housing mess are getting sullied with the b-word.
An inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars is what President Bush and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson call some plans in Congress to aid homeowners stung by the mortgage market mess. For their part, Democrats say the Bush administration is more interested in bailing out Wall Street than Main Street.
But despite the toxic reputation of bailouts, more and more lifelines keep getting tossed — including one administration plan dubbed "Project Lifeline."
With the housing market wheezing and presidential candidates seizing on the crisis, politicians and government officials will likely toss out more proposals, rescue plans and initiatives. Whatever these plans are called, both Democrats and Republicans are being careful to couch their proposals as an effort to aid homeowners — and not mortgage lenders — amid an ever-widening economic problem, though it's nearly impossible to aid one without helping the other.
"Anything that can be described as a bailout is going to be dead-on-arrival, so how these proposals are framed is critical to whether or not they even have a chance at enactment," said Jaret Seiberg, a financial services policy analyst with Stanford Group. "It has to be framed as a short-term rescue for the housing market and the economy and not as a way to help individual lenders or investors."

Rove: Iraq Redeployment
Rove: Iraq Redeployment Would Cause Oil Prices To Skyrocket To $200 A Barrel
This morning on Fox News Sunday, former White House adviser Karl Rove claimed that redeployment from Iraq would cause oil prices to shoot to $200 a barrel:
If we were to give up Iraq with the third largest oil reserves in the world to the control of an Al Qaida regime or to the control of Iran, don’t you think $200 a barrel oil would have a cost to the American economy?
Watch it: At Link
Occupying Iraq has hardly helped oil prices stay low. Last week, oil prices reached a record high of over $102 a barrel. On March 19, 2003 — the day the Iraq war commenced — oil was trading at $36 a barrel. A look at the rise in oil prices:
None of this should have come as a surprise to the Bush administration; before the war, economists were widely predicting a prolonged presence in Iraq would lead to a rise in oil prices. As Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz recently noted in Vanity Fair, “The soaring price of oil is clearly related to the Iraq war. The issue is not whether to blame the war for this but simply how much to blame it.”
Rove is also out of step with the American people, a majority of whom believes that the Iraq war is tied to the current economic downturn. A recent AP poll found that 68 percent of Americans say that redeploying from Iraq would help the economy.

Whistle While You Work

A secretive Swiss bank landed an apparently novel censorship blow against the internet this week. Anyone who tried to call up wikileaks.org, a global website devoted to publicising leaked documents, found themselves frustrated. The site simply wasn't there any more.
The Julius Baer bank in Zurich succeeded in hamstringing the shadowy individuals behind the website by the simple trick of moving not against them, but against a US company that hosted their domain name.
Dynadot, the California resellers who collect a few dollars by this internet trade, submitted to a legal injunction ordering the name to be deleted. Yet however wise this scheme may have appeared at the time to the Swiss bank's Los Angeles lawyers, Lavely & Singer, it has now backfired in a big way.
The injunction blew up a gale of debate about internet freedom, and sprayed the bank's secret documents all over the net. It has also thrust into prominence an obscure group of dreamers and programmers who want to provide what they call an "untraceable and uncensorable" leaking machine, to be used by dissidents worldwide.
Those behind Wikileaks include Tibetan, Chinese and Thai political campaigners, an Australian hacking author, and Ben Laurie, a mathematician living in west London who is on the advisory board.

Regional tensions rise after Colombia raid into Ecuador by Jean-Luc Porte
Sun Mar 2, 5:15 PM ET
BOGOTA (AFP) - Venezuela and Ecuador moved their armies to the Colombian border and shut down their embassies in Bogota, as tensions soared over Colombia's cross-border killing of a top Colombian FARC rebel in Ecuador.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Sunday he was sending troops, tanks and fighter aircraft to his country's border with Colombia, a move the White House called an "odd reaction" to Colombia's fight against what the US government deems "a terrorist organization."
"Mr Defense Minister (Gustavo Rangel), send 10 battalions at once to the border with Colombia! Tank units, military aviation get moving!" Chavez said during his weekly "Alo Presidente" television and radio program.
Chavez' fiery words followed a Colombian army raid Saturday on a jungle camp just inside Ecuador of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's largest leftist rebel group. The attack killed FARC's second-in-command Raul Reyes.
Chavez said Ecuador "is moving troops to its northern border (with Colombia)," adding that Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa "can count on Venezuela for whatever it needs, in any situation."
"We don't want war," said Chavez, "but we won't let the Empire (United States) or its lap dog (Colombian) President (Alvaro) Uribe to try to make us weaker."

Bush wields Colombia trade deal to halt Venezuela
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush’s contention that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Colombia is key to halting the influence of Venezuela’s leftist president in Latin America has convinced few in the US Congress.
Opposition Democrats that control Congress have refused to ratify the agreement — which Washington and Bogota signed in December 2006 — in part concerned over ties between President Alvaro Uribe’s government and a right-wing paramilitary group involved in human rights violations and drug trafficking on the US list of terrorist organizations.
To help get the agreement approved, Bush is now presenting the FTA as the main US policy tool to halt the influence of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a firebrand leftist who famously described Bush as "the devil" at the United Nations.

No Grand Jury Probe For
No Grand Jury Probe For Former Bush Aides
WASHINGTON, Feb. 29, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(AP) Attorney General Michael Mukasey refused Friday to refer the House's contempt citations against two of President Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury. Mukasey said White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers committed no crime.
As promised, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she has given the Judiciary Committee authority to file a lawsuit against Bolten and Miers in federal court.
"The House shall do so promptly," she said in a statement.
Mukasey said Bolten and Miers were right in ignoring subpoenas to provide Congress with White House documents or testify about the firings of federal prosecutors.
"The department will not bring the congressional contempt citations before a grand jury or take any other action to prosecute Mr. Bolten or Ms. Miers," Mukasey wrote Pelosi.
Pelosi shot back that the aides can expect a lawsuit.
"The American people demand that we uphold the law," Pelosi said. "As public officials, we take an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect our system of checks and balances and our civil lawsuit seeks to do just that."
The suit had a political purpose too. Democrats have urged that the filing occur swiftly so that a judge might rule before the November elections, when all 435 House seats and a third of the Senate are up for grabs. Criticism of Bush's use of executive power is a key tenet of the Democrats' platform, from the presidential race on down.
The House voted two weeks ago to cite Bolten and Miers for contempt of Congress and seek a grand jury investigation. Most Republicans boycotted the vote.
Pelosi requested the grand jury investigation on Thursday and gave Mukasey a week to reply. She said the House would file a civil suit seeking enforcement of the contempt citations if federal prosecutors declined to seek misdemeanor charges against Bolten and Miers. The plaintiffs would be the entire Judiciary Committee, who would be represented by the House's lawyers, according to aides to Pelosi and committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich.
Mukasey took only a day to get back to her. But he had earlier joined his predecessor, Alberto Gonzales, in telling lawmakers they would refuse to refer any contempt citations to prosecutors because Bolten and Miers were acting at Bush's instruction.
A civil suit would drag out a slow-motion crawl to a constitutional struggle between a Democratic-run Congress and a Republican White House that has been simmering for more than a year.
Democrats say Bush's instructions to Miers and Bolten to ignore the House Judiciary Committee's subpoenas was an abuse of power and an effort to block an effort to find out whether the White House directed the firing of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006 for political reasons.
Republicans call the whole affair a political game and walked out of the House vote on the contempt citations in protest.
The 223-32 House vote on a resolution approving the contempt citations Feb. 14 was the first of its type in 25 years. The White House pointed out that it was the first time that such action had been taken against top White House officials who had been instructed by the president to remain silent to preserve executive privilege.
In his letter, received by the House early Friday evening, Mukasey pointed out that not only was Miers directed not to testify, she also was immune from congressional subpoenas and was right to not show up to the hearing to which she had been summoned.
"The contempt of Congress statute was not intended to apply and could not constitutionally be applied to an executive branch official who asserts the president's claim of executive privilege," Mukasey wrote, quoting Justice policy.
"Accordingly," Mukasey concluded, "the department has determined that the noncompliance by Mr. Bolten and Ms. Miers with the Judiciary Committee subpoenas did not constitute a crime."
Though they were not surprised, Democrats reacted to Mukasey's letter with outrage.
"Today's decision to shelve the contempt process, in violation of a federal statute, shows that the White House will go to any lengths to keep its role in the U.S. attorney firings hidden," said Conyers. "In the face of such extraordinary actions, we have no choice but to proceed with a lawsuit to enforce the committee's subpoenas."

We are in agreement. I was not taking a shot at your comments. I was using your comments as a jumping-off point to practice and polish the argument that I use in opposition to "bootstraps" Conservatives and "Welfare Queen" Reaganites and "anti-nanny-state" fuckfaces.
If the discussion does not begin with the inherent purpose behind the existence of human society, then it does not begin at the beginning.
If the pursuit of the "common good" excludes the people we don't like, then it ain't the common good.

SEDER you need a little more control over the size of files being posted. I have a large pipe and it is slow for me. So someone on a budget connection is either just annoyed or not coming back.

A Question For Fernando And Similarly Knowledgeable Geeks
The United States Air Force has been running a televised recruitment advertisement for their "Cyberforce."
It pictures the Pentagon and states that it is under attack three million times every day.
My question: Using the same definition that the Air Force is most likely using for what constitutes an attack, how many times would you guess that Microsoft or Google or eBay is "under attack" every day?
I know, It's only rock n roll, but I like it.
Ya I know.
