Threatening the Texas Primary/Caucus
by: Glenn Smith
Fri Feb 29, 2008 at 10:45 AM CST
There is method to the Clinton campaign's mad preemptive sword rattling over the Texas primary/caucus. They want to delay and disrupt the reporting of the delegate count. They hope that if they win the popular vote, they can avoid, at least for one news cycle, news reports that even if they do so they will very likely lose the delegate fight in Texas and fall further behind Obama in the national delegate contest.

Mukasey Refuses Probe of Bush Aides
WASHINGTON-Attorney General Michael Mukasey is refusing to refer the House's contempt citations against two of President Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury. Mukasey says they committed no crime.
In a letter Friday, he told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers were right in refusing to turn over documents or testify about the firings of federal prosecutors.
The House voted two weeks ago to cite Bolten and Mukasey for contempt of Congress and seek a grand jury investigation. Most Republicans boycotted the vote.
Pelosi has threatened to file a civil suit over the issue.

Democratic turnout in early Texas voting worries GOP
FORT WORTH — Early voting for Texas’ March 4th primary ended Friday with turnout numbers that shattered all previous records.
The vast majority of those ballots were cast in the Democratic primary, a turnout that gave Republican officials pause in this traditionally "red" state.
A final tally wasn’t immediately available Friday afternoon, but as of Wednesday, about 805,000 people had voted in the state’s 15 biggest counties, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s web site. More than 600,000 of those voters are participating in the Democratic primary.
The numbers far outpace the early turnout in primaries in recent years. In 2000, about 315,000 voters cast early primary ballots in the 15 largest counties. Less than 300,000 cast early ballots in the 2002 and 2004 primaries.
In Tarrant County, approximately 2,100 votes were being cast per hour on Friday, according to Tarrant County Elections Administrator Steve Raborn. In contrast, only 3,300 people voted in the county on the entire last day of early voting in 2004.
“We have never seen this kind of early voting turnout in a Primary Election,” Raborn said.........
Why Barack Obama Got My Vote
by Naomi Wolf
I just flew back from Australia, where I was speaking about the erosions of our civil liberties. Believe me, the rest of the world is agog at our inaction as what makes us Americans is being set aflame; and they are more scared of what an unsheathed US could do to the rest of the world than we are.
They also get more news out in the rest of the world about these depredations than we do here in our media bubble.
For instance: As the Australian reported earlier this week, New South Wales Justice of the Peace Mamdouh Habib is suing the Australian federal government — which under the Howard administration had colluded with the US in committing various abuses against detainees and due process — for having allowed him to be arrested wrongly in Pakistan in 2001, kidnapped and sent illegally to Egypt. There this Justice of the Peace was illegally imprisoned and tortured for six months. After that the United States held him for FOUR YEARS in Guantanamo. His complaint notes that he is a law-abiding citizen who was swept up under false pretexts. “It turns out that Habib has incontrovertible proof of his good standing,” the Australian noted. “[H]e is a fully accredited Justice of the Peace in NSW. A search of the NSW Attorney General’s Department website reveals that not only Habib, but his wife Maha Habib, is a JP.” To become justice of the peace in New South Wales, the Australian added, “you have to be NOMINATED BY A MEMBER OF THE NSW PARLIAMENT and submit to a full character inquiry, including a criminal records check by NSW Police.” (ALL CAPS mine)
Get that? A justice of the peace in a developed-world democracy. Had you heard of that?
Me neither.
WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? Leadership means getting out in front of where people are and waking them up. Right now, given these violent possible threats to us and our families, we are sleeping.
Which is why I am formally coming out of the closet with my SUPPORT FOR SENATOR BARACK OBAMA. Of all the candidates running now, he is the leader on understanding the threat to the Constitution and actually taking action, not just mouthing soundbites, on the need to deny torturers space in our nation and to restore the rule of law.
“Lawyers for Gitmo detainees endorse Obama,” read a recent headline on the Boston Globe’s political blog. In the article, reporter Charlie Savage notes that “More than 80 volunteer lawyers for Guantanamo Bay detainees today endorsed Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s presidential bid. The attorneys said in a joint statement that they believed Obama was the best choice to roll back the Bush-Cheney administration’s detention policies in the war on terrorism and thereby to ‘restore the rule of law, demonstrate our commitment to human rights, and repair our reputation in the world community.’”

where are those references?
WASHINGTON — Attorney General Michael Mukasey refused Friday to refer the House's contempt citations against two of President Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury.
I know Mukasey said he wouldn't refer but the house paperwork (is it the rules committee?) specifically says that contempt will be referred to the D.C. Us attorney and it was his job to refer the contempt citations to a grand jury.
I'm thinking this is a delay tactic so when the house does its own referal per
H. Res. 980 -- Authorizing the Committee on the Judiciary to initiate or intervene in judicial proceedings to enforce certain subpoenas.
the court will saw "we can't rule untilthe D.C. Us attorney sees it."
strike that. Conyers said yesterday
"Now that the Speaker has referred the contempt citations against Harriet Miers and Joshua Bolten to U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor, I hope the Justice Department will put the partisan manipulation of our system of justice behind it, and follow its obligation to allow this matter to be addressed by a grand jury. To do otherwise would turn on its head the notion that we are all equally accountable under the law."
before he said
"Our investigation into the firing of United States Attorneys revealed an administration and a Justice Department that seemed to put politics first, and today’s decision to shelve the contempt process, in violation of a federal statute, shows that the White House will go to any lengths to keep its role in the US Attorney firings hidden. In the face of such extraordinary actions, we have no choice but to proceed with a lawsuit to enforce the committee's subpoenas.”

Senate shelves Iraq U.S. troop withdrawal bill
Richard Cowan
Reuters US Online Report Top News
Feb 28, 2008 15:58 EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A liberal Democrat's attempt to impose quick U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq collapsed in the U.S. Senate, as expected, but leaders on Thursday insisted they will retool legislation and force votes in coming months.
The Senate spent much of this week debating a plan by Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin to begin withdrawing most American troops from Iraq by July.
His effort, like one last December, faced deep opposition in the chamber, where members have repeatedly blocked steps to impose timetables for winding down a war that is entering its sixth year.
Senate leaders pulled the bill from debate when it was obvious there was not support for passage.
"We'll be back. There are a number of things we're considering," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, told reporters in acknowledging Feingold's measure was doomed.

Poll: Majority Of Americans
Poll: Majority Of Americans Support Mandates Requiring The Purchase Of Health Coverage
When Medicare was being created in 1964, Ronald Reagan said, “I think we are against forcing all citizens, regardless of need, into a compulsory government program.”
To this day, conservatives continue to resist universal programs. In his 2008 State of the Union address, President Bush once again mentioned private health savings accounts, despite the fact that they may increase the number of uninsured Americans. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) similarly touts private plans, saying he wants people to “go out and choose their insurer anywhere in America.”
A new poll from NPR, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health, however, finds that most Americans reject conservatives’ approach to health care. In fact, the majority of the public supports mandates requiring Americans to purchase health insurance. NPR reports:
When asked whether they would support a broad proposal that would require everyone to get coverage, 59 percent said they would support it. Such a proposal would require employers to provide coverage or pay into a pool. The government would help low-income people get coverage, and insurance companies would be required to take anyone who applies. People who don’t get coverage through one of these channels or purchase it themselves would pay a fine.
As Jonathan Cohn of The New Republic notes, “In a system based on private insurance, a lot of people won’t obtain even affordable insurance without some sort of requirement.” This point is backed up by prominent health care experts such as Columbia’s Sherry Glied and former Clinton administration adviser on Medicare Bruce Vladeck, who have criticized the tactic of scaring Americans into thinking mandates will force them to buy unaffordable health coverage.
For a practical approach to guaranteeing an American right to affordable, quality health coverage, the Center for American Progress has more here.

Preparing for his 14th HBO comedy special, George Carlin waxes philosophic on the freedom that comes from not giving a #%&@.
By Heather Havrilesky
Feb. 28, 2008 | We're not accustomed to thinking of comedians as cultural commentators, but a performer as sharp and defiant as George Carlin is just the person to call this outdated separation of high and low culture into question. Carlin made a name for himself with comedic bits aimed at provoking conventional Americans, but he cemented his status as a pop-cultural icon by digging deeper, illustrating his gripes about American politics and culture with the imagination and insights of our most ambitious contemporary writers.

FBI documents contradict 9/11 Commission report

Hijacker had post-9/11 flights scheduled, files say
Newly-released records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request contradict the 9/11 Commission’s report on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and raise fresh questions about the role of Saudi government officials in connection to the hijackers.
The nearly 300 pages of a Federal Bureau of Investigation timeline used by the 9/11 Commission as the basis for many of its findings were acquired through a FOIA request filed by Kevin Fenton, a 26 year old translator from the Czech Republic. The FBI released the 298-page “hijacker timeline” Feb. 4.
The FBI timeline reveals that alleged hijacker Hamza Al-Ghamdi, who was aboard the United Airlines flight which crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, had booked a future flight to San Francisco. He also had a ticket for a trip from Casablanca to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Though referenced repeatedly in the footnotes of the final 9/11 Commission report, the timeline has not previously been made available to the public.
The FBI timeline is dated Nov. 14, 2003 but appears to have been put together earlier (since the last date mentioned in the document is Oct. 22, 2001) and was provided to the 9/11 Commission during its 2003 investigation. The final Commission report cites the FBI timeline 52 times.

McCain’s tax breaks for
McCain’s tax breaks for donating to his kids’ elite schools. Ken Silverstein of Harper’s takes a look at Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) charitable contributions, noting that the senator is essentially the sole donor to the John and Cindy McCain Foundation, and his wife is its chairman and president”:
Between 2001 and 2006, McCain contributed roughly $950,000 to the foundation. That accounted for all of its listed income other than for $100 that came from an anonymous donor. During that same period, the McCain foundation made contributions of roughly $1.6 million. More than $500,000 went to his kids’ private schools, most of which was donated when his children were attending those institutions. So McCain apparently received major tax deductions for supporting elite schools attended by his children.

The Alabama G.O.P. Wrestles with Retraction
One of the most interesting sideshows coming out of the transmission of the 60 Minutes segment dealing with former Alabama Governor Don E. Siegelman has been the conduct of the Alabama G.O.P. The CBS piece features direct charges leveled at Karl Rove and at Bush Administration prosecutors. But to listen to Michael Hubbard, the chair of the Alabama Republicans, you’d think it was a grudge match between 60 Minutes and his party. There must be some reason for Hubbard to adopt this posture, and for it instantly to be shared by his captive press. But maybe it’s something on the order of that line from Hamlet: The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
So let’s do something that no Advance newspaper in Alabama will ever do. Let’s take a look at the way Hubbard keeps moving the stakes around and the points which are left curiously unaddressed in the Hubbard statements.
Here’s what Mr. Hubbard said on February 24:
“Our staff has done an exhaustive search of Alabama Republican Party records going back several years, and we can find not one instance of Dana Jill Simpson volunteering or working on behalf of the Alabama Republican Party. . . Nor can we find anyone within the Republican Party leadership in Alabama who has ever so much as heard of Dana Jill Simpson until she made her first wave of accusations last summer.” (my emphasis)
And here’s how the Birmingham News repositions Mr. Hubbard three days later:
Alabama Republican leaders said this week that they can find no evidence Simpson served as an operative or in any other major role in a campaign. They did not dispute that she may have been among hundreds of volunteers who offer help to GOP campaigns. (my emphasis)
What a difference 72 hours makes. Maybe they got around, in the three days after that “exhaustive search” to talking with Governor Bob Riley and Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh (the G.O.P. chair at the time of the events in question) about Jill Simpson? Maybe they recognized that it was going a bit far out on the ledge to deny that a former county co-chair was unknown to the party leadership? After all, an artful spinner of falsehoods knows that they must at least be somewhat plausible. Or maybe it was Simpson’s statement to NBC’s senior legal correspondent Dan Abrams, who has now adopted the Siegelman case as a staple of his “Bush League Justice” series, that she had confirming telephone records that gave Mr. Hubbard a bit of pause? In any event, what we see between these two statements looks remarkably close to a retraction.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - The economic impact of the mortgage crisis and credit crunch will be huge, and it has barely begun, a new study prepared by several prominent economists and released Friday has concluded.
"Feedback from the financial market turmoil to the real economy could be substantial," it said. Unless they can quickly recapitalize, banks are likely to cut back their lending to consumers and businesses by more than $1 trillion, cutting economic growth by more than a percentage point over the next 12 months.

Oil profits
Tell that woman that her husband needs to use his head - oil company PROFITS are at a record high, and profits reflect their income after the cost of doing business. They may choose to use those profits to build more refineries, but of course, they don't have much of an incentive. You build refineries, you increase supplies and lower prices. Which would mean lower profits.
Yeah, that's happening.
Martial law in the USA
Check out the Matt Rothschild article in the current Progressive (www.progressive.org/mag_rothschild)
which lays out how the FBI is deputizing private businesses with shoot-to-kill power in case of a national emergency. Put it together with Presidential Directive 51, in which W gives himself the power to suspend the Constitution in case of a national emergency defined by him. Plus the Rogue Government website
(http://www.roguegovernment.com/news.php?id=6563)
in which this extra-Constitutional military entity called US Northern Command declares itself ready to implement martial law.
They're going to pull a Reichstag fire event, suspend the Constitution, cancel the election, and bomb Iran. Their crimes are too great for them to just leave quietly.

The Obama Craze
Count Me Out
The Obama Craze
By MATT GONZALEZ
Part of me shares the enthusiasm for Barack Obama. After all, how could someone calling themself a progressive not sense the importance of what it means to have an African-American so close to the presidency? But as his campaign has unfolded, and I heard that we are not red states or blue states for the 6th or 7th time, I realized I knew virtually nothing about him.
Like most, I know he gave a stirring speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. I know he defeated Alan Keyes in the Illinois Senate race; although it wasn't much of a contest (Keyes was living in Maryland when he announced). Recently, I started looking into Obama's voting record, and I'm afraid to say I'm not just uninspired: I'm downright fearful. Here's why:
This is a candidate who says he's going to usher in change; that he is a different kind of politician who has the skills to get things done. He reminds us again and again that he had the foresight to oppose the war in Iraq. And he seems to have a genuine interest in lifting up the poor.
But his record suggests that he is incapable of ushering in any kind of change I'd like to see. It is one of accommodation and concession to the very political powers that we need to reign in and oppose if we are to make truly lasting advances.
THE WAR IN IRAQ
Let's start with his signature position against the Iraq war. Obama has sent mixed messages at best...

The Situation Room: Is McCain Eligible To Be President?
By: Nicole Belle @ 11:45 AM - PST
What if you ran a candidate who was disqualified from being President by virtue of the location of his birth? It has to make some in Republican circles a little nervous to think about.
From CNN’s Jack Cafferty:
Here’s something you may not know about John McCain: He was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936. His father was stationed there in the Navy.
The New York Times reports the circumstances surrounding McCain’s birth raise questions about his ability to become president since our founding fathers specifically said only a “natural-born citizen” can hold the highest office in the land. The idea was to prevent foreigners from becoming president.
There’s no precedent for McCain. No U.S. president has ever been born outside the 50 states. But, McCain’s campaign says they’re confident he meets the requirement, that they researched the question during his last run in 2000 and this time around as well. And they have asked former solicitor general Theodore Olson to prepare a legal opinion.
So is John McCain eligible to be President if he was not born in the US? To be honest, I thought it was a ridiculous question, since my lay understanding of international law is that military bases and embassies in foreign countries were considered to be American soil, but after consulting my brother in law the attorney, there does appear to be a little technical problem:

PB - I think the best approach is to post the request to click on the link and then to click to donate within each blog thread every day - because that is where everyone who visits the site automatically goes to ASAP, and will therefore provide the most visibility to the most eyes and give us the best chance for more people to catch on to the idea by repeated message with graphic and links.
From a marketing perspective, this approach makes the most sense to me, with also asking those who have individual blogs here to add the links to their permanent pages as well.
Research shows that it takes 21 days for a behavior to be practiced for it to become a habit, so by posting the links, with an explanation of the what and why and the good that can be done w/out ANY cost other than a total of 2 minutes of a person's time a day, within a month, the seed can be well planted and then the donations can grow exponentially.

Rep. Waxman: US Officials Certified New Baghdad Embassy As Complete, Despite Major Problems
ANNE FLAHERTY
AP News
Feb 29, 2008 15:12 EST
Federal officials last year certified as complete the new $736 million U.S. embassy in Iraq, even though the mammoth complex was still plagued by construction defects, a senior House Democrat charged Friday.
Rep. Henry Waxman, who heads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called on the State Department to respond in a March 12 hearing and demanded they release internal documents related to the project.
Waxman cites a Feb. 13 independent assessment of the embassy that found "major" infrastructure problems and "critical and non-critical" deficiencies in most buildings, despite a December 2007 certification by a senior project official that the embassy was complete.
"These inspection reports raise many questions about whether the embassy is safe for occupation and why the State Department certified the project as substantially complete in December," Waxman wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Fact is that progressive or socialist-ic policies are not photo-ready, broadcast-friendly, sexy or well-attired. They don't play well in sound bytes. The don't look good on the View. Furthermore they don't need spokesmodels because they are about real people. Ugly people. People that struggle everyday in the shame of ____ blank. Fill it in ... poverty.. disease... addiction... violence.. whatever. Progressive social policy engages the ugliness in society and as a result does not play well in the media. Until the grip of the Disney-fication of politics is brought to an end, and we can look into the mirror of our society sans- breast implant or botox... nothing will change. Change is ugly. Our society is ugly. Obama is pretty.

Re: Animal rescue.
Could you use your influence with the Boss man, and see if he could include a permanent link for these critters, or will we get better traction by reposting?

This may be the guy sam was just referring to, to email:
Philippe Collin has been an interactive and marketing executive managing digital media products and services for more than 14 years, serving clients including ABC Radio Networks, CNN, FedEx, LVMH and Muzak. He most recently was President of innovative marketing group M-IMS. Collin said: "I look forward to strengthening and monetizing Air America’s digital assets by leveraging the intense relationship the brand has with the progressive audience."
If this statement is true (like the statements that Danny Goldman made when he first came to AAR)then they should respond to audience pressure. I want to ask Sam via IM if it is Phillipe...if so, then the email will be pcollin@airamerica.com and then the new owner/money guy
Krieker would be at CKireker@airamerica.com ...if they even bother to assign these guys emails addresses anymore, they turn over so quickly (and thank god, in the case of the last one!)
Anyway, if this Phillipe guy is doing any sort of programming, we may be able to write him.
