Will the conservatives start impeachment hearings?
Can you impeach a candidate? I guess we'll find out.
A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.
What's it say about his chances where best case scenario he's just a lobbyist tool.
Mr. McCain’s confidence in his ability to distinguish personal friendships from compromising connections was at the center of questions advisers raised about Ms. Iseman.
The lobbyist, a partner at the firm Alcalde & Fay, represented telecommunications companies for whom Mr. McCain’s commerce committee was pivotal. Her clients contributed tens of thousands of dollars to his campaigns.
Mr. Black said Mr. McCain and Ms. Iseman were friends and nothing more. But in 1999 she began showing up so frequently in his offices and at campaign events that staff members took notice. One recalled asking, “Why is she always around?”
I'm starting to realize why the Huckster is sticking around.

MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY
Thu Dec 20 2007 10:49:27 ET
Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!
McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
The paper’s Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain’s aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.
The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation. The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

When solar fears eclipse reason

Eclipses Through Traditions & Cultures
"Most early calendars were lunar calendars, because the monthly duration of the lunar cycle is 29.53 days, 12.37 months during a solar seasonal year. Every year, the lunar "synodic" calendar of 29.53 days slips by 0.38 of a month or 11.2 days relative to the seasonal "planting" year.
At the same time that ancient peoples kept track of how the lunar and solar calenders meshed with each other, they also uncovered some of the factors that lead to lunar and solar eclipses which also require specific timings of the solar and lunar positions across the sky and over the years. In many ways, the ability to predict eclipses was an outgrowth of the pre-existing need to keep track of lunar and solar calender relationships."

McCain Fails in Rebutting Story ......
McCain Campaign Responds Angrily to Report Questioning Ethics
ABC’s Ron Claiborne and Tahman Bradley report: Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Arizona Sen. John McCain's campaign responded angrily tonight to an article in the New York Times about his ethics, and specifically to reports that McCain had a relationship with a female lobbyist eight years ago that some on his staff were concerned appeared inappropriate.
The Times reports that Vicki Iseman, with the Washington DC firm Alcalde and Fay, represented telecommunications businesses that had business before McCain's commerce committee. The Times reports that a former campaign adviser was instructed to keep Ms. Iseman away from the senator at public events. The paper says another unnamed McCain aide met with the woman at Union Station in Washington, DC to ask her to stay away from the senator.
According to the New York Times, these advisers were "convinced the relationship had become romantic."
The Times article also revisits McCain's involvement in the Keating Five scandal, in which McCain and four other senators were accused of lobbying banking regulators on behalf of a political associate who ran a failed Savings and Loan.
The McCain campaign tonight accused the New York Times of lowering its standards and engaging in a "hit and run smear" campaign.
McCain campaign advisor Charles Black accused the New York Times of shoddy journalism, telling ABCNews, “The New York Times is playing the National Enquirer. They chased around this gossip story, chasing rumors which are false for the past three-and-a-half months.”
Black says the Times only chose to publish the story when it learned another news organization, The New Republic magazine, was preparing a story about the Times’ decision to hold back publication. "The New Republic stampeded them into running this story, which is shoddy journalism, which is a smear of John McCain," Black said.
Here is the full statement from McCain Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker:
"It is a shame that the New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit and run smear campaign. John McCain has a 24-year record of serving our country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the issues at stake in this election.
"Americans are sick and tired of this kind of gutter politics, and there is nothing in this story to suggest that John McCain has ever violated the principles that have guided his career."
Re: shit-for-brains
Nader was always a nonentity, and Dean was out of the running. I only had the opportunity to vote for Kerry. That Kerry was not elected allowed many former Bush supporters to finally wake up.
The fact is, neither one of us will see another Republican in the White House during our lifetimes. The Chimp you wanted to have a beer with has seen to that.

One election at a time......

Here's somthing I found early today .....
John McCain has been a Senator since 1987
He's served on the Senate Armed Services Committee from the beginning, and yet, how has our military been improved? Our national defense is being dismantled in favor of private military organizations that aren't being held accountable like Blackwater and Haliburton. Our veterans must suffer poverty, homelessness and no healthcare, or worse, be submitted to the disgraceful failure that is the Walter Reed Medical Center. He's refused to perform his duty to oversee that our soldiers get body armor and properly armored vehicles. And he's only shown a token effort to tell Bush that torture is WRONG.
He's served and serves on the Indian Affairs committee but just how exactly have the lives of Native Americans been improved from his service? Native Americans suffer the lowest life expectancy of any people. And they continue to be taken advantage of by the likes of criminals such as Abramoff and the Republican swine who set them up with false pretences.
He was one of the Keating Five who were responsible for the Savings and Loan crisis in the 80's. What did they do exactly? They took money from banks to pass legislation that allowed banks to overextend aggressive loans for commercial real-estate. That's right folks, nearly the same damn issue as the sub-Prime lending crisis in this country now. Later, he had the audacity to put his name on 'campaign finance reform'. Well, it actually has done nothing to improve the system and lobbyists still give money to politicians as they hand lawmakers the bills they want passed.
And what happen when his wife, Cindy McCain was caught in the midst of this scandal? She became addicted to drugs and as the accountant for the Keating Five group, she stole drugs from the American Voluntary Medical Team she worked for. When she was caught red-handed in 1992 by Tom Gosinski, the director of government and international affairs for AVMT, McCain had Gosinski terminated. Her activities violated federal statutes, so a federal investigation was conducted. McCain's defense team secured an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's office that limited her punishment to financial restitution and enrollment in a diversion program, without anything being made public. Isn't that nice?
John McCain is a failure as a senator and a wolf in sheeps clothing when it comes to reaching out to Independents. He is as corrupt and as vile as they get in the GOP.

The NYT's wrote that article making it look like more to come ..
and McCain's lack of outright denial in this story is telling
This will all come up again .... bet Limbaugh is wetting himself with anticipation ....
McCain was one of the Keating Five, congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips.
Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito screwed up jury instructions.
Though he was not convicted of anything, McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center.

Your statement is based on a small pile of bullshit.
All we need is to have whichever the Democratic nominee is to be still breathing by November, and its the beginning of the end for the Republican Party.
Most of the American people are still unaware of extent of the criminal activity of the Bush Administration. Coupled with the sissyphean task of trying to put our country back on its feet, there will be a landslide of hearings, revelations, and Republican criminal convictions with the new Democratic Administration and congress.
All that will be left to do will be to strengthen our extradition treaty with Paraguay.

The McCain Story
This afternoon, before the Times story came out, I was working on a post about national political reporters' tendency not to give much of any scrutiny to various McCain flipflops, contradictions and bamboozlements. Obviously, the terrain has changed a bit since I started writing that one (I'd hoped to finish it up this evening; either tonight or tomorrow early).
This is an odd story for a couple reasons. We know that the McCain Camp went to the mattresses to get this story spiked back in December. And some heavy legal muscle was apparently brought to bear. When a story has to go through that much lawyering it often comes out pretty stilted and with some obvious lacunae. And this one definitely qualifies. Reading the Times piece it struck me as a bit of a jumble. The reference to a possible affair is there in the lede. But then most of the piece is a rehash of a lot of older material about McCain's record before getting back to the relationship with Iseman.
In terms of a relationship between the two, the Times piece seems quite hedged. According to two staffers, staffers became concerned there was a romantic relationship. They took steps to protect McCain from himself. According to the Times sources, after being confronted by staffers, McCain "acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman."
The Post did a quick follow up in the wake of the Times piece. But the emphasis is significantly different -- suggesting the 'concern' on the part of the McCain staff was not so much about a potential affair but rather having McCain too close to a lobbyist while running a reformist insurgent presidential campaign, a suggestion that strikes me as rather dubious. (Note the role of John Weaver in the Post story and possibly in the Times story too. Weaver is a key figure in McCain's turn toward reformism and then turn back away from it.)
At the moment it seems to me that we have a story from the Times that reads like it's had most of the meat lawyered out of it. And a lot of miscellany and fluff has been packed in where the meat was. Still, if the Times sources are to be believed, the staff thought he was having an affair with Iseman and when confronted about it he in so many words conceded that he was (much of course hangs on 'behaving inappropriately' but then, doesn't it always?) and promised to shape up. And whatever the personal relationship it was a stem wound about a lobbying branch.
I find it very difficult to believe that the Times would have put their chin so far out on this story if they didn't know a lot more than they felt they could put in the article, at least on the first go. But in a decade of doing this, I've learned not to give any benefits of the doubt, even to the most esteemed institutions.
Equally telling, though, is the McCain camp's response and their clear unwillingness to address or deny any the key charges of the piece. (Read the statement closely. It's all bluster.) When it comes to sex stories even falsely accused politicians have some reluctance to get into nitty gritty denials. But McCain -- or rather McCain's communications office since it's in their name not his -- doesn't even address it.

Was John McCain Getting
Was John McCain Getting 'Lobbied' By A Woman 30 Years His Junior?
This evening the New York Times posted a 3,000 word takedown of Senator John McCain's ethics—and a possibly inappropriate relationship with a female lobbyist—after rival publications became aware of the details of the story, which the newspaper had been holding back.
Carrying the bylines of Jim Rutenberg, Marilyn W. Thompson, David D. Kirkpatrick, and Stephen Labaton, the article describes the efforts of McCain aides, during his first presidential run eight years ago, to separate the senator from a then-32-year-old lobbyist named Vicki Iseman, who they feared might have started a romantic relationship with McCain. Iseman and McCain both denied such a relationship to the Times. While McCain refused to be interviewed by any of the Times reporters, he did telephone Executive Editor Bill Keller to deny that particular allegation.
Michael Isikoff of Newsweek and Michael Calderone of Politico were two of the reporters at rival publications who were chasing the Times story. Calderone was particularly well informed about the details of the Times investigation. Marc Santora, who had been covering the McCain campaign for the paper, reportedly left the beat, in part because of McCain's unhappiness with the pursuit of this story by Ruttenberg and his Times colleagues.
The story also recounts McCain's use of lobbyists in his campaign, and his frequent trips on corporate jets, until the law was changed to prohibit them. (McCain voted for the change in the law.) Keith Olbermann was among the first to discuss the article on MSNBC toight.

Vicki Iseman
Two weeks after graduating from IUP with a degree in elementary education, Iseman joined a friend in Washington and was hired as a receptionist. With only a few months’ experience on the job, she said she “walked into my boss’s office [the president of the company] and said, ‘You don’t really know me, but I answer the phones. I’m a college graduate and I’d like you to consider me for a secretarial or an administrative position.’” He agreed to try her out for three months. Within a year she became his special assistant.
Alcalde and Fay represents clients from cruise lines and universities to airports and broadcasters. With no background in politics or telecommunications, Iseman realized she needed to know as much as possible to survive her new job. She spent most of her waking hours learning the business, and it paid off handsomely. Eight years later she became the youngest partner ever in the firm, counting among her clients PAXtv, Religious Voices in Broadcasting, Telemundo, the Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation, and Computer Sciences Corporation. In addition, she has met Melanie Griffith, Britney Spears, Bo Derek, and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Iseman said that the most important aspect of her job is the effect that one person can have on legislation in small communities and educational institutions. “Where my heart lies is in education,” she said. “I believe it is the great equalizer.”

Iran body reinstates more hopefuls for March vote
TEHRAN (Reuters) - An Iranian hard-line watchdog body has reinstated another 200 candidates to run in a March parliamentary election, state television reported on Wednesday.
The vote for the 290-seat parliament, dominated by hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's supporters, is a test for the popularity of the president who came to power in 2005 vowing to share out oil wealth more fairly but failed to curb inflation.
Over 2,000 registered candidates out of 7,200 were initially barred by government committees. Moderate politicians, including former president Mohammad Khatami and some of Ahmadinejad's backers, have complained over the mass disqualifications.
However, the conservative-run Guardian Council, which has stopped hundreds of reformists running in past votes, has now reinstated more than 1,000 hopefuls to run for parliament.
Potential candidates in Iran face a vetting process. Those who pass the filter of government committees, have to be approved by the council.
The council has the authority to reinstate those who were initially rejected or bar more hopefuls based on criteria such as loyalty to the Islamic system.
It was not clear how many moderate candidates were among those reinstated, but reformists accuse the council of not reinstating leading moderate hopefuls.
The final list of eligible candidates will be announced in the first week of March.
Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, an architect of the Islamic revolution, criticized the clerical establishment for the mass disqualification, saying it was "undermining freedom and rights of people". Continued...

McCain: Reports on lobbyist a "smear"
TOLEDO, Ohio - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain issued a statement Wednesday night saying he "will not allow a smear campaign" to distract from his campaign as published reports questioned his relationship with a lobbyist.
The Washington Post quoted longtime aide John Weaver, who split with McCain last year, as saying he met with Vicki Iseman and urged her to stay away from McCain. The New York Times suggested an inappropriate relationship between the Arizona senator and Iseman, a Washington lobbyist. The New York Times quoted anonymous aides saying they had confronted McCain and Iseman, urging them to stay away from each other, before his failed presidential campaign in 2000.
Eight years later, McCain is close to securing the GOP nomination. Aides said the senator would address the allegations at a news conference Thursday morning.
The published reports said McCain and Iseman each denied having a romantic relationship, and the paper offered no evidence that they had, saying only that aides worried about the appearance of McCain having close ties to a lobbyist with business before the Senate Commerce Committee on which McCain served.
The story alleges that McCain wrote letters and pushed legislation involving television station ownership that would have benefited Iseman's clients.
In a statement issued by his presidential campaign, McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said: "It is a shame that The New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit-and-run smear campaign.
"John McCain has a 24-year record of serving our country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the issues at stake in this election. McCain must have forgot about the Keating Five
"Americans are sick and tired of this kind of gutter politics, and there is nothing in this story to suggest that John McCain has ever violated the principles that have guided his career."
McCain's campaign also issued a lengthy statement insisting that his actions did not benefit any one party or favor any particular interest.
McCain defending his integrity last December, after he was questioned about reports that the Times was investigating allegations of legislative favoritism by the Arizona Republican and that his aides had been trying to dissuade the newspaper from publishing a story.
"I've never done any favors for anybody — lobbyist or special-interest group. That's a clear, 24-year record," he told reporters in Detroit.
McCain and four other senators were accused two decades ago of trying to influence banking regulators on behalf of Charles Keating, a savings and loan financier later convicted of securities fraud. The Senate Ethics Committee said McCain had used "poor judgment" but that his actions "were not improper" and warranted no penalty.....

US military 'heroes' associated with some despicable assaults
George Orwell's essay "Reflections on Gandhi", opens with the words "Saints should always be judged guilty until proved innocent..."
Thinking about the US military and its willing role in quelling lawful dissent, I felt that Orwell's statement, with a few word changes, would apply to military "heroes".
This feeling became a certainty after reading about the "Bonus March" in Professor Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States".
Zinn described the fate of American First World War veterans, who "out of work and with hungry families" joined (in 1932) thousands of comrades suffering similar deprivation at the hands of rampant capitalism, and converged on Washington.
These men (some accompanied by wives and children) became known as the "Bonus Army".

Re: If things go as badly for you...
You mean for all of us. We are all in this together--whether we choose to know it or not.
As smcgee43 mentioned, both elections were close enough to steal so Bush could have his 51% "mandate" (nevermind all the subsequent "man dates" that were conjugated in the White House by the likes of Jeff Gannon).
You forget that many of us knew Kerry's victory was slipping away by mid-September with help from the "liberal" Corporate Media, the Swiftboat Liars, and Kerry's campaign manager Bob Shrum (not to mention Kerry himself). It was a disappointment but not great surprise.
The Rapture-ready Right was poised to vote against their own best interests with all the anti-gay intitiatives in pivotal states so they could do the bidding of the Neo-Cons. The "fundies" are slow to learn that gay people continue to be produced by heterosexual couples, and a woman's right to choose will never go away.
Things are far different now, or haven't you noticed? Where before, getting rid of the Republican Pig Class was wishful thinking, now it's merely a foregone conclusion. Most of Bush's Kool-Aid guzzlers have dwindled to a steady 28%, or roughly the equivalent to the size of the old East German Stazi. There will always be that number in any society of those who will always do what they're told "or else."
So there you have it--the Republicans are done, finished, kaput, finito, bupkis, toast.

Lobbying Firm Yanks Vicki Iseman's bio from their site
Washington lobbying firm pulls bio of lobbyist accused in McCain scandal, then readds it
The Washington lobbying firm Alcalde & Fay pulled the biography of partner Vicki Iseman Wednesday evening after a New York Times article accused her of having a romantic relationship with Republican presidential nominee shoe-in Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
The removal was caught and reported on by the Huffington Post at 947pm ET.
RAW STORY, however, found the bio was readded around 11pm ET Wednesday night.
Originally, Iseman's corporate biographical profile was posted with the identifying ID tag of "44." An Aug. 10, 2007 file at archive.org -- an Internet service which saves older files of websites -- shows Iseman's bio with the 44 ID.
That bio was deleted Wednesday. A link to the page with ID 44 came up blank when retrieved late Wednesday evening..........

Former Rep. Ney Transferred to Halfway House
If it was anyvboy else they would still be in jail !
Former Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, convicted in a corruption probe tied to former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, has been released from a minimum security federal prison in Morgantown, W.Va., and transferred to a halfway house.
Officials said Wednesday he will serve out his 30-month sentence at a halfway house at an undisclosed location.
Ney, a former chairman of the House Administration Committee, resigned from the House Nov. 3, 2006, after pleading guilty Oct. 13, 2006, to making false statements and conspiracy to commit fraud. The charges arose from his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is also in federal prison. Ney admitted receiving lavish gifts from Abramoff in return for political favors.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons said Ney will be released from the bureau’s custody on Aug. 16, and he could be transferred to home confinement in Ohio before then. That release date depends on Ney continuing to compile “good time credit.”
Ney reported to the Morgantown prison to begin his sentence March 1, 2007. While there, he has participated in an alcoholism rehabilitation program.
Ney represented the sprawling 18th District in eastern and southern Ohio for six terms. Democrat Zack Space won the seat in the 2006 elections.

US missile hits 'toxic satellite'
BBC
The US has successfully struck a disabled spy satellite with a missile fired from a warship in waters west of Hawaii, military officials say.
Military operatives had only a 10-second window to hit the satellite - USA 193 - which lost control shortly after it was launched in December 2006.
Officials said they were worried fuel on board could pose a threat to humans.
But Russia suspects the operation was a cover to test anti-satellite technology under the US missile defence programme.
The US denies the operation was a response to an anti-satellite test carried out by China last year, which prompted fears of a space arms race.......

Re: I will admit Bush has done a hell of a job...
Or is that "heck of a job?"
Interesting to note how you've overcome your difficulty in having to admit your delusion that Bush has done a damn thing to prevent another terrorist attack. Most of us who have had our heads out of our asses for any length of time know that the only reason that we haven't been attacked again (after Bush left the keys in the car and the engine running before 9/11--you know, the first time?) is because our attackers have chosen not to.
It's funny also that you call it a "war." What president would lower taxes and ask for no sacrifices during "a time of War?" That Kool-Aid must be damn intoxicating.
"Have you taken into account the political ramifications of another Terrorist attack on the United States?"
To carry your hypothetical a step further, will you be swept up in the swirling emotional fervor? Or will your intellect will out as you ruminate that yet another terrorist attack happened under Bush's watch, the cowboy who vowed to run a "crusade," to track Bin Laden down "dead or alive," and then later, swear he doesn't "give that much thought to him." What class of citizens will you be in? Hypothetically speaking, of course.
"But an attack is just a matter of time."
I see you are laying your "fear cards" out on the table for all to see. Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, and yes, John McCain has taught you to be the good little soldier you truly are.

McCain & Veterans' Health Care
Excerpt:
Throughout this campaign, John McCain has relied on the support of fellow veterans and promised to make veterans' health care his "top domestic priority." [Associated Press, 12/12/07] In reality, John McCain has consistently put his campaign ahead of veterans and military families by pandering to the right wing of his Party on tax cuts.
McCain Has Repeatedly Voted Against Increasing Funding for Veterans Healthcare to Keep Tax Cuts for the Rich. John McCain has repeatedly voted to keep intact tax cuts for the rich, rather than provide American veterans with adequate healthcare funding. McCain has repeatedly voted against amendments in the Senate that would have added funding for healthcare services, but eliminated tax cuts for the wealthy. Funding would have covered such important services as improving care at veterans' hospitals, providing mental health services to soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse problems. [2006 Senate Vote #7, 2/2/06; 2005 Senate Vote #343, 11/17/05; 2003 Senate Vote #74, 3/21/03]
2006: McCain Voted Against Eliminating Increased Fees And Co-Payments For Veterans Health Care Program By Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes. In 2006, McCain voted against the Kerry amendment that would eliminate increased fees and co-payments for veterans in the TRICARE health care program by raising the discretionary spending limit by approximately $10 billion. The provisions would have been fully offset by eliminating creating corporate tax breaks. [2006 Senate Vote #67, 3/16/2006]
McCain Stood Out in Opposing Veterans' Healthcare Funding. McCain was one of only 13 Republicans to vote against an amendment that added over $400 million for inpatient and outpatient care for veterans. [2006 Senate Vote #98, 4/26/06]
McCain Puts Politics Over Vets; Would Rather Be Out Campaigning Than Supporting Our Troops. McCain missed an important vote this year that supported the funding of the troops in Iraq and guaranteed them adequate medical care upon returning home. [2007 Senate Vote #76, 3/15/07]

Veterans Not Entitled to Specific Types of Health Care
Bush Administration Argues That Veterans Not Entitled to Specific Types of Health Care
According to government lawyers, federal law establishes "veterans' eligibility for health care, but it does not create an entitlement to any particular medical service." The lawyers said the law entitles veterans only to "medical care which the secretary (of Veterans Affairs) determines is needed, and only to the extent funds ... are available."
According to Erspamer, "They're saying it's completely discretionary, that even if Congress appropriates money for veterans' health care, we can do anything we want with it"

Maverick Republican Drops WC Bomb on Bush/Cheney
by Dan DeWalt
In a packed hearing room on Feb 19th, under a carved wooden sign reading “Live Free or Die”, the New Hampshire House committee of State-Federal Relations and Veterans’ Affairs heard testimony on Representative Betty Hall’s HR 24, which calls on the U.S. Congress to begin impeachment hearings for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.
What was most notable about the four straight hours of testimony was not that opponents of the resolution could only muster two people willing to testify against it, both Republican stalwarts using selected excerpts from Jefferson’s parliamentary manual or from the bill itself, whose arguments were embarrassingly empty.
It was not that Kris Roberts, the committee chair, had taken this hearing seriously enough to have researched the law, history and nuances of the subject, and that he used this to inform the proceedings in a reasonably fair manner.
It was not the fact that after the hearing ended, several pro-impeachment witnesses were approached by committee members and thanked for their clarity and useful testimony.
It was not even the novelty of the interjections by one committee member that would periodically steer the conversation abruptly into Rockefeller/Trilateral Commission territory.
The most remarkable moment came late in the afternoon when Republican House member Steve Vaillancourt strode into the room to testify. After passing out copies of the second chapter of Patrick Buchanan’s “Day of Reckoning” as supporting evidence, Vaillancourt opened his remarks quoting “fools rush in where wise men fear to tread”, and it sounded like a set up to condemn a rush to impeach. But instead he said that Betty Hall is neither fool nor wise man, but is a model of courage and that her impeachment resolution should be supported.
And then the fun began.

The Fletcher Memorial Home
Take all your overgrown infants away somewhere
and build them a home a little place of their own
the fletcher memorial home for incurable tyrants and kings
And they can appear to themselves every day on closed circuit t.v.
to make sure they're still real
it's the only connection they feel
"ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Reagan and Haig
Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher and Paisley, Mr. Brezhnev and party, the ghost of McCarthy, the memories of Nixon
and now adding color a group of anonymous Latin-American meat packing glitterati"
Did they expect us to treat them with any respect?
They can polish their medals and sharpen their smiles,
and amuse themselves playing games for a while.
boom boom, bang bang, lie down you're dead.
Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye
with their favorite toys
they'll be good girls and boys
in the fletcher memorial home for colonial
wasters of life and limb
is everyone in?
are you having a nice time?
now the final solution can be applied
Hi Mel--long time no see
Are you ready for an Obama Nation?
The redneck racists are getting nervous. They're going to fight to the death to keep America pure and white, like War Dog's prick.
Heck EB
They're calling it Fear of a Black Planet.
Naw but Obama is pretty inspirational and this country needs that now. A real cheerleader unlike George and his bullshit. If every state of the union is a call and response with Congress I'm going to love Obama's America. Too bad we can't recall Bush's court appointments.
They will begin to shoot wildly at the Obama camp
And that's when you know it's over. Just as long as nothing sticks. No swift boat shit and no Donna Rice or whatever these guys come up with.
Masters of War
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
Fear of a Black Planet
Man, you ain't gotta
Worry about a thing
about your daughter
Nah she ain't my type
(But supposin' she said she loved me)
Are you afraid of the mix of Black and White
We're livin' in a land where
The law say the mixing of race
Makes the blood impure
She's a woman I'm a man
But by the look on your face
See ya can't stand it
Man calm your ass down don't get mad
I don't want your sister
(But suppose she said she loved me)
Would you still love her
Or would you dismiss her
What is pure? Who is pure?
Is it a European state of being, I'm not sure
If the whole world was to come
Through peace and love
Then what would we be made of?
Excuse me for the news
You might not be amused
But did you know white comes from Black
No need to be confused
Excuse me for the news
I question those accused
Why is this fear of Black from White
Influence who you choose?
Man c'mon now, I don't want your wife
Stop screaming it's not the end of your life
(But suppose she said she loved me)
What's wrong with some color in your family tree
I don't know
I'm just a rhyme sayer
Skins protected against the ozone layers breakdown
2008
Might be best to be Black
Or just Brown countdown
I've been wondering why
People living in fear
Of my shade
(Or my hi top fade)
I'm not the one that's running
But they got me one the run
Treat me like I have a gun
All I got is genes and chromosomes
Consider me Black to the bone
All I want is peace and love
On this planet
(Ain't that how God planned it?)
Excuse me for the news
You might not be amused
But did you know White comes from Black
No need to be confused
Excuse me for the news
I question those accused
Why is this fear of Black from White
Influence who you choose?
The youth need a cool dude like Obama
and can you dig the white women are voting for him instead of Hillary.
But the white women really want a handsome, articulate, and sexy man that looks like Muhammad Ali, for President.
Hahahahahaha
That goddess in the sky sure loves to play with us.
Obama is saying, "Hey, Bill Clinton, I'M going to be the first Black President!"

Bush at 19% approval. I have two reactions:
1. 19% is unbelievably high for this worst of all presidents (to date).

War
Until the philosophy which holds one race superior
And another Inferior
Is finally And permanently
Discredited And abandoned -
Everywhere is war -
Me say war.
That until there are no longer
First class and second class citizens of any nation
Until the color of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the color of his eyes -
Me say war.
That until the basic human rights
Are equally guaranteed to all,
Without regard to race -
This a war.
That until that day
The dream of lasting peace,
World citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain just but a fleeting illusion to be pursued,
But never attained -
Now everywhere is war -
war.
And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
that hold our brothers in Angola,
In Mozambique,
South Africa
Sub-human bondage
Have been toppled,
Utterly destroyed -
Well, everywhere is war -
Me say war.
War in the east,
War in the west,
War up north,
War down south -
War - war -
Rumors of war.
And until that day,
The African continent
Will not know peace,
We Africans will fight - we find it necessary -
And we know we shall win
As we are confident
In the victory
Of good over evil.

Too bad we can't recall Bush's court appointments.
supreme court justices can be impeached.
the other option is to add more justices to the court.
Yep, Dan....

IMPEACH THE FIVE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES
i was looking for some more information about whats involved in impeaching supreme court justices and found this:
We the undersigned, after grieving as we have in the past for a close friend or relative who died in a war to ensure our right to vote, do hereby decide not to bury that entity, but to restore the life, dignity and respect of the institution our forefathers held... and we now hold dear. In order to accomplish this, we do hereby call for the impeachment of the five Supreme Court Justices Rehnquist, Scalia, O'Connor, Thomas, and Kennedy because of the disgrace they have brought to said institution for the following reasons:
more on the supreme court
from msn encarta:
Supreme Court of the United States
VIII. Removal from Office
Justices serve lifetime appointments. Under the Constitution they can be removed from the Court only by first being impeached (accused) by a majority vote of the U.S. House of Representatives and then convicted by a two-thirds vote of the Senate. There is no precise standard for determining whether a justice has committed an impeachable offense, though the consensus is that removal should be for criminal or ethical lapses, not for partisan political reasons. No justice has ever been removed through this process, and only one justice of the Supreme Court has ever been impeached. In 1805 Justice Samuel Chase was impeached in the House by his political enemies, but the Senate failed to convict when it became apparent that Chase’s opponents were after him not because he had committed any wrongdoing but because they disagreed with his decisions. The possibility of impeachment may have been a factor in the resignation of Justice Abe Fortas, who left the Court in 1969 after allegations surfaced that he had accepted a questionable fee from a private foundation. Some conservative groups rallied for the removal of Chief Justice Earl Warren in the 1960s, but their efforts failed.
In the wake of the controversy over Abe Fortas’s financial practices, the Court became more restrained in its public activities. Once confirmed to the Court, justices try to ensure that their investments and outside income do not bring their integrity into question. Common practice now dictates that justices also remove themselves from politics, refraining from speaking out about controversial issues or pending legislation. The justices can make public speeches, but these are usually confined to subjects related to the law in general and to the federal court system. In these and other questions of judicial ethics the Court usually follows the American Bar Association (ABA) Code of Judicial Conduct, although these rules are not binding on the Court.
=====
i do believe the conservatives have lowered the bar to include political reasons as a valid reason for impeachment so the next four years could prove interesting.
Dan,I wonder
if they have a Newer Petition ?
That ones abit old.. :)

Thanks for the link about eclipse superstitions.
I liked this one:
"But historically, not all peoples have been so negative in their view of eclipses.
Some North American Inuit believe that during an eclipse, the Sun and the Moon temporarily leave their places in the sky and check to see that things are going all right on Earth."

It sure seems
to me that McCain has real troubles because of the link with lobbyists and how it might affect independent voters and how the affair will affect the republican base.

"Straight Talk" McCain Loan Raises FEC Questions
AP - The government's top campaign finance regulator says John McCain can't drop out of the primary election's public financing system until he answers questions about a loan he obtained to kickstart his once faltering presidential campaign.
Federal Election Commission Chairman David Mason, in a letter to McCain this week, said the all-but-certain Republican nominee needs to assure the commission that he did not use the promise of public money to help secure a $4 million line of credit he obtained in November.
McCain's lawyer, Trevor Potter, said Wednesday evening that McCain has withdrawn from the system and that the FEC can't stop him. Potter said the campaign did not encumber the public funds in any way.
McCain, a longtime advocate of stricter limits on money in politics, was one of the few leading presidential candidates to seek FEC certification for public money during the primaries. The FEC determined that he was entitled to at least $5.8 million. But McCain did not obtain the money, and he notified the FEC earlier this month that he would bypass the system, freeing him from its spending limits.
But just as McCain was beginning to turn his attention to a likely Democratic opponent, Mason, a Republican appointee to the commission, essentially said, "Not so fast."
By accepting the public money, McCain would be limited to spending about $54 million for the primaries, a ceiling his campaign is near. That would significantly hinder his ability to finance his campaign between now and the Republican National Convention in September.
Complicating the dispute is the FEC's current lack of a quorum. The six-member commission has four vacancies and Senate Democrats and Republicans are at loggerheads over how to fill them.
In his letter, Mason told McCain he would need the votes of four commissioners to accept his withdrawal from the system.
"The commission will consider your request at such a time as it has a quorum," Mason wrote.
Without action by the Senate, McCain could be waiting indefinitely.......
