Weekend Watchdog
Submitted by Bill.Scher on Fri, 02/08/2008 - 10:05pm.
If it's Friday, it's time for Weekend Watchdog! Here are my suggested questions for the Sunday shows. Add your own in the comments, and send them on to the shows. Contact info for the shows is below. Remember: always be brief, polite and respectful when contacting the media, so our voices will be taken seriously. For Karl Rove (CBS' Face The Nation): President Bush's new attorney general Michael Mukasey said he will not enforce any contempt of Congress citation against you for refusing to testify about your role in the purge of U.S. Attorneys. Is the Administration covering up your role in the prosecutor purge? For President George W. Bush (Fox News Sunday): 71% of Americans say we're on the wrong track. 66% say we're already in a recession. 64% oppose the occupation of Iraq. Is there one aspect of your record as president, in foreign policy or domestic policy, that the public considers a success? For former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark. (Meet The Press, CBS' Face The Nation): You have characterized President Bush’s foreign policy as having an “arrogant, bunker mentality.” Sen. John McCain has said he’s fine with staying in Iraq for 100 years. Does Sen. McCain’s foreign policy views show an arrogant, bunker mentality? *** Contact NBC's Meet The Press by clicking here Email Fox News Sunday at FNS@foxnews.com Email CBS' Face The Nation at ftn@cbsnews.com More successes of the 97%Submitted by Brett on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 2:02am.
Why the Afghan Taleban feel confident By David Loyn In Afghanistan, the Taleban now claim to have influence across most of the country and have extended their area of control from their traditional heartland in the south. They are able to operate freely even in Wardak Province, neighbouring the capital Kabul, as a BBC camera crew who filmed them recently found. One of their commanders in Wardak, Mullah Hakmatullah, said they do not control the roads nor the towns, but they hold the countryside and have increasing support because of the corruption of the administration. "The administration do not solve people's problems. People who go there with problems have to give a lot of money in bribes and then they get stuck there," Mullah Hakmatullah said. 'Much better now' Support from villagers is essential to their ability to continue operations through the winter months. map Local people said that they were willing to help the Taleban because they supported their brand of justice. In one of the villages under their control, people willing to come forward and talk to the BBC said that security was much better now that the Taleban were there. One of them, Gul Wazir, said that the Taleban were prepared to try to resolve small problems. "Even if it's a minor thing, the Taleban will sort it out. Before (when the government of President Karzai was in control) it was not like that. They did not pay attention to us and the poor people were ignored." The Taleban group showed off weapons, including a heavy machine gun they said they had captured from government forces. They test-fired them in broad daylight, apparently not fearing retaliation from government nor international forces. They were armed with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Nearby the burnt-out wreck of a government vehicle was left from a recent confrontation with Afghan national forces. Orders from the south The overall military commander of the Taleban in Wardak, Mullah Rashid Akhond, claimed to have 2,000 active fighters. Taleban in Wardak province He said that he was operating an administrative system with orders coming from Kandahar in the south, just like during the days of the Taleban government that fell in 2001. He said that the Taleban were running their own courts. "People are taking their cases away from the government courts and coming to us. Now there is no robbery in our area." Many of the suicide bombers who go to Kabul come from this area, just an hour's drive away. Mullah Akhond justified them, saying that most of the attacks are now carried out by Afghans themselves, not foreign fighters. Six years ago the Taleban found it hard to recruit. They put their increasing success now down to official corruption, the slow pace of reconstruction and the presence of foreign troops. 'Unstable environment' Speaking in London, the former Afghan Interior Minister Ali Ahmad Jalali said that the rise of the Taleban was caused by weakness in the central government. Taleban in Wardak province "I think it is a major threat. What moves people is not ideology, but an unstable environment among the existing networks of clans, tribes, aggrieved people, drug traffickers, opportunists, and unemployed youth. "It is the kind of problem that can be solved only with the establishment of good governance." Mr Jalali is a potential presidential candidate in next year's election, as President Karzai faces increasing international pressure to deliver swift results. But if anything, the battle for Afghanistan is harder now than it was after the Taleban were first forced out of power in Kabul. same old shit/new nameSubmitted by Cathy in Seattle on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 1:55am.

Oh, Mitt, Mitt, Mitt. Losing Mitt Romney from the presidential race is not just a matter of another Republican biting the dust. It’s all those dozens and dozens of future incarnations that we may never have a chance to meet. I was hoping that someday we’d get a Libertarian Mitt, or maybe a cowboy. Worst of all, I’m going to have to get through the rest of the year without ever again referring to the fact that Romney once drove to Canada with the family dog, Seamus, strapped to the roof of the car. Mitt invested more than $40 million of his own money and $50 million of other people’s on his race, which comes down to about $8 million per state won (North Dakota says thank you!) or around $324,000 per delegate. It was an incredible bargain compared to the $60 million Rudy Giuliani spent on zero delegates, but still not exactly the kind of return on investment he was used to getting in the private sector. “We’re going to keep on battling. We’re going to go all the way to the convention,” he told his cheering supporters Tuesday night as his loyal wife, Ann, stood by looking somewhat unenthusiastic........... but they were COOL!Submitted by Sunshine Jim on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 2:30am.

Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain. Does The Brownshirt Party Have Aces Up Its Sleeve?Submitted by bidobear on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 7:34am.
Does The Brownshirt Party Have Aces Up Its Sleeve? By Paul Craig Roberts 08/02/08 "ICH" -- -- The Brownshirt Party has chosen John “hundred year war” McCain as its presidential candidate. Except for Cheney, Norman Podhoretz, and billy kristol, McCain is America’s greatest warmonger. In a McCain Regime, Cheney will be back in office with another stint as Secretary of War. Norman “Bomb-bomb-bomb-Iran” Podhoretz will be Undersecretary for Nuclear War with General John “Nuke them” Shalikashvili as his deputy. Rudy Giuliani will be the Minister of Interior in charge of Halliburton’s detention centers into which will be herded all critics of war and the police state. billy kristol will be chief White House spokesliar. The whole gang will be back--Wolfowitz, Perle, Wurmster, Feith, Libby, Bolton. America will have a second chance to bomb the world into submission. With the majority of voters sick of war, sick of lies, sick of fraud from the Federal Reserve and Wall Street, and sick of stagnant and falling incomes, McCain is poised to capture 20% of the vote--the Christian Zionists, the rapture evangelicals, and the diehard macho flag-waving thugs who believe America is done for unless “Islamofacists” are exterminated. The accumulated lies, deceptions, war crimes, the shame of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo prisons, Bush’s police state assault on civil liberty, countless numbers of Iraqi and Afghan men, women, and children murdered for the sake of American and Israeli hegemony, and the collapsing US economy indicate a political wipeout for the Brownshirt Party. In a country with an informed and humane population, the Republican Party would be reduced to such a small minority that it could never recover. What will happen in America? Polls show that Americans have had it with Bush, and the 2006 congressional election showed that the voters have had it with Republicans. But the Republicans have seen the message and ignored it, and the people and the Democrats have continued to tolerate and to enable that which they claim to oppose. Meanwhile Bush holds on to his determination to find a way to bomb Iran, dismissing along with the neocons the unanimous NIE report that there is no Iranian weapons program, just as Bush and the neocons dismissed the Iraq weapons inspectors who reported truthfully that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction. What the American people and the Democrats have not understood is that a party with an agenda could care less for the facts. As Lenin declared, truth is what serves the agenda. The Democrats are far from pure, but they lack the fervor and determination that only ideology can provide. The Democrats might have issue-specific ideologies, but they lack an over-arching ideology that makes it imperative for them, and only them, to be in power. In contrast, the Brownshirt Party is fueled by the neocon ideology of American (and Israeli) supremacy. The neocon ideology of supremacy is more far-reaching than Hitler’s. Hitler merely aimed for sway over Europe and Russia. The neocons have targeted the entire world. Neocons have prepared plans for war against China. They are ringing Russia with military facilities and paying millions of dollars to leaders of former constituent parts of the Soviet Union to sign up with NATO, which the neocons have turned into a mechanism for drafting Europeans to serve American Empire. All this work, the neocon Project for a New American Century, the costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the demonization of Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas, the ghettoization of the West Bank and Gaza, the police state measures that Bush has succeeded in putting on the books, the concentration of power in the executive branch, these are successes from which the Brownshirts will not walk away. Possibly the neocons and their Brownshirt followers are so delusional that they do not realize that their glorious aims are not shared. Maybe they are no different from Americans, maxed out on credit and unable to make mortgage payments, who believe that next week they will win the lotto. On the other hand maybe the Brownshirts have a plan. What could the plan be? They can steal the election with the Diebold electronic voting machines and proprietary software that no one is allowed to check. There are now enough elections on record with significant divergences between exit polls and vote tallies that a stolen election can be explained away. The Democrats have been house trained to acquiesce to stolen elections. The voters, whose votes are stolen, dismiss the evidence as “conspiracy theories.” Or what about a well-timed orchestrated “terrorist attack” to drive fearful Americans to the war candidate. False flag events are stock-in-trade. Hitler used the Reichstag fire to turn German democracy into a dictatorship overnight. And what about the widespread spying on Americans? The Bush regime’s explanation for its violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act makes no sense. Bush’s violation of the law is clearly a felony, grounds for impeachment, arrest, indictment, and a prison sentence. Moreover, no intelligence purpose was achieved by Bush’s illegal acts. The FISA law only requires the executive branch to come to a secret court to explain its purpose and obtain a warrant. The law even allows the executive branch to spy first and obtain the warrant afterward. The purpose of the warrant is to prevent an administration from spying for political purposes. The only reason for Bush to refuse to obtain warrants is that he had no valid reason for the spying. Does this mean that during the presidential campaign we will hear from Attorney General Michael Mukasey that candidate Hillary is under investigation for a Whitewater related offense, or that candidate Obama is linked to an alleged crime figure or Islamist? The neocons control most of the print and TV media, and the right-wing radio talk hosts are no friends of Democrats. As Americans have fallen for every other fraud perpetrated upon them, they are likely to be suckers as well for “investigations” or rumors of investigations of the Democratic candidate. Hillary is widely disliked and easy to distrust. Obama is a new face with which voters have little experience. He is partly black and has a funny name. John McCain is a war hero, a graduate of the US Naval Academy. His father and grandfather were admirals. On his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam in one of America’s orchestrated wars, he was shot down and injured. A POW for 5.5 years, he was tortured by communists due in part to traitorous actions by Democrats like Jane Fonda. McCain has been in Congress and thus in the public eye since 1983. The only scandal with which he is associated is that he was one of “the Keating five,” one of five senators associated through campaign contributions with S&L owner and real estate investor Charles Keating and alleged interveners in his behalf. Keating was framed by prosecutors, but was later exonerated by a federal judge. Adolf Hitler never had the support of a majority of the German electorate. In the November 1932 election, he received 33.1 percent of the vote. His peak was March 6, 1933, with 43.9 percent following the Reichstag fire a few days before on February 27, blamed on the communists. Hitler’s minority support in a democracy did not prevent him from becoming dictator of Germany. Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during President Reagan’s first term. He was Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal. He has held numerous academic appointments, including the William E. It is now very clear that there were two separate agreements, one the official agreement with Carter in Algeria, the other, a secret agreement with another party, which, it is now apparent, was Reagan. They made a deal with Reagan that the hostages should not be released until after Reagan became president. So, then in return, Reagan would give them arms. We have published documents which show that US arms were shipped, via Israel, in March, about 2 months after Reagan became president. Actually, I am agnostic on the October Surprise. While I consider the Reagan "crime syndicate" awful for democracy--and world peace-- I am not convinced that Khomenei's keeping of the hostages had anything to do with any dealings by him and Reagan's cohorts. But I do keep an open mind. FWIW, I think Ted Koppel's Nightline (and other MSM outfits) and its nightly coverage of the hostage crisis a major factor in Reagan winning in 1980. right now.. Speaking of combs, I stumbled onto an interesting torture used on a sainted martyr while researching Ash Wednesday (which led to St. Aloysius which led to St. Blaise). I hope Dick Cheney doesn't know about this one. Excerpt from: http://www.answers.com/St.%20Blaise ...Saint Blaise (or Blasius Βλάσιος, Armenian: Սուրբ Բարսեղ) was a physician and bishop of Sebaste (modern Sivas), Armenia. According to his Acta he was martyred by being beaten, attacked with iron carding combs, and beheaded. In iconography, Blaise is often shown with the instruments of his martyrdom, iron combs. The similarity of these instruments of torture to wool combs led to his adoption as patron of wool combers in particular, and the wool trade in general. He may also be depicted with crossed candles. Such crossed candles (left unlighted for safety reasons) are used for the blessing of throats on the feast day of St. Blaise, which falls on February 3, the day after Candlemas on the Catholic calendar of saints, Blaise is traditionally believed to intercede in cases of throat illnesses, especially for fish-bones stuck in the throat... Jennifer Van Bergen Writes to John Conyers at john.conyers@mail.house.gov Dear Representative and Chairman Conyers: Historically, the party that impeaches has won at subsequent elections. Impeachment of the criminals who now run our country will also show your constituents -- and other Democrats across the country -- that you still believe in and will uphold the Constitution and your duty under it. It is also important to note that there are many non-Democrats who will vote for those who they believe will uphold the Constitution, because they still believe deeply in this country and for the liberties it purports to protect. Impeachment is also the only way to truly wash away the corruption and lawlessness that have crept (leapt?) into our Executive branch. This Executive is like a cancer, infecting everything with which it comes into contact. Look at the US Attorney firings, look at Mukasey's unwillingness to comply with Congress' mandates, look at the laws passed at its behest (themselves often in flagrant violation of the Constitution or international laws), look at the presidential signing-statement "exceptions" to disfavored portions of the laws, in violation of the President's oath of office and mandate to take care that laws are faithfully executed. Undoing the Bush Legacy Most people who cast ballots on Super Tuesday believed they were voting not just for a new face in the White House but also for sweeping new policies. Few believe a President McCain, Romney, Obama or Clinton would hew to all of the policies of Bush and Cheney--and even fewer believe they should. Yet that certainty may be misplaced. When the next President is sworn in, the clammy fingers of the Bush Administration may still be wrapped around vital national policies. Even in the past few weeks, the Administration began entrenching strategic policies that are core to its ideological commitments in national security. Acting largely in secret, the Administration is moving to tie down the next White House--Republican or Democratic--in ways that will prove hard to unravel. Whether or not it succeeds depends on the vigilance of Congress and the public. "Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance." WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain became the likely Republican nominee after Mitt Romney decided to suspend his campaign Thursday. Now, the Democrats are debating who would do better against the Arizona Republican. Two polls this month have asked registered voters nationwide how they would vote if the choice were between McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton. A CNN poll, conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation February 1-3, shows Clinton three points ahead of McCain, 50 percent to 47 percent. That's within the poll's margin of error of 3 percentage points, meaning that the race is statistically tied.. A Time magazine poll, conducted February 1-4, also shows a dead heat between Clinton and McCain. Each was backed by 46 percent of those polled. Sen. Barack Obama believes he can do better, arguing "I've got appeal that goes beyond our party." In the CNN poll, Obama leads McCain by 8 points, 52 percent to 44 percent. That's outside the margin of error, meaning that Obama has the lead. And in the Time poll, Obama leads McCain by 7 points, 48 percent to 41 percent -- a lead also outside of the poll's margin of error of 3 percentage points................... Don't fear Bush! Turkey's parliament on Saturday approved constitutional amendments to ease a ban on Islamic headscarves in universities. Legislators in the predominantly Muslim but secular country voted 403-107 in favour of a first amendment that will add a paragraph to the constitution stating that everyone has the right to equal treatment from state institutions. They later voted 403-108 in favour of a second amendment stating "no-one can be deprived of [his or her] right to higher education." The changes must be signed by President Abdullah Gul, an observant Muslim who is widely expected to approve them. The changes were backed by Turkey's ruling party and the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party, but bitterly opposed by the secular establishment and the main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party. "The head scarf is a political symbol," said legislator Canan Aritman of the Republican People's Party, which said it would appeal the changes. AP - It always sounded innocuous enough, tucked into the adjectives Mitt Romney would rattle off when he described the qualities for the next president. Wisdom, optimism and the right temperament, said the former Republican presidential candidate. There was no doubt whom Romney was referring to — rival and likely GOP nominee John McCain, whose short-fuse temper is widely known, especially among his Senate colleagues. The dig that McCain lacks the comportment to be commander in chief was part of the playbook that Romney used in his unsuccessful bid to secure the Republican nomination. Now it provides a piece of the playbook for either Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton or Sen. Barack Obama in a general election campaign against the four-term Arizona senator. Among the weaknesses that Romney criticized: _McCain's admission that he was better versed in foreign affairs and military matters than economic issues. _McCain's flip-flops both philosophically and on specific issues. _McCain's alignment with Democrats on taxes, illegal immigration, campaign finance and environmental issues. Romney stopped short of labeling McCain a liberal, but he said McCain's history of agreements with Democrats would leave voters little more than intangibles with which to distinguish between the Democratic and Republican nominees. While he never defined those intangibles, Romney suggested McCain would be a liability in a race in which the 71-year-old would be trying to become the oldest person ever elected president, while Clinton was trying to become the first female president and Obama, the first black........... No single remedy can calm global markets, G7 nations saySubmitted by smcgee43 on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 12:13pm.
Seven of the world's wealthiest nations said on Saturday they will act together or individually to calm markets in the wake of a global economic downturn, but stopped short of prescribing specific measures. Finance ministers from the G7 group, meeting for one day of talks in Tokyo, said the fundamentals of the world economy remained "solid" and that the U.S. economy was likely to escape a recession this year. However, they also listed several factors that are fuelling concerns. "We note that downside risks still persist, which include further deterioration of the U.S. residential housing markets; tighter credit conditions from prolonged difficulties in the financial markets; high oil and commodity prices; and heightened inflation expectations in some countries," a G7 communiqué said. No single remedy was recommended to bolster the global economy, but Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney indicated further interest rate cuts are likely needed in Canada. and the most basic principle of checks and balances is being undermined. Not since Watergate has a president so openly disregarded the will of Congress. During hearings in the Judiciary Committee yesterday, I told Attorney General Michael Mukasey that I called for impeachment hearings because of the stonewalling and blatant abuses of the Bush Administration. He responded by stating that he will NOT enforce a contempt of Congress citation against Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten for refusing to testify before Congress. The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7M9sjRLCtQ Alberto Gonzales may be long gone, but the Bush Administration continues its executive overreach with the new Attorney General. We can debate the need for Impeachment hearings. We can argue its effects on the election or our agenda. But one thing is abundantly clear: If Congress' right to require testimony is undermined, then our country's leaders - Democrat, Republican, or Independent - will be immune from accountability. The power of the subpoena - to call officials before us - is one of the most fundamental safeguards in our system of government. To have it effectively discarded - by virtue of the President instructing Administration officials to ignore a congressional subpoenas and not even appear before Congress - is unprecedented. The idea that the Attorney General would willingly defend this position - despite Congress' constitutional right to call such witnesses, is outrageous. Impeachment hearings could render this moot: The President, Vice President, and all officials under them would no longer invoke executive privilege. There would be no more smokescreens. In one week, I will be delivering my letter calling for impeachment hearings to Chairman John Conyers. Already, 16 Members of Congress have joined my call, including 3 Judiciary Committee members. I am hopeful for more in the coming days, but it is important for you to reach out to your representative in Congress to express how you feel. You can view the current list of signers, here: http://www.wexlerforcongress.com/news.asp?ItemID=230 I do not know how Congress will react, but I do know this: I will pursue this course aggressively. I will not compromise away the constitutional role of Congress. Your support is invaluable. Please know that I am working everyday to ensure that the Bush Administration is held accountable. For President George W. Bush
For President George W. Bush (Fox News Sunday): 71% of Americans say we're on the wrong track. 66% say we're already in a recession. 64% oppose the occupation of Iraq.---------
Poll: ‘to fix economy, get out of Iraq.’
The AP writes that Americans want to end the Iraq recession by ending the war:
The heck with Congress’ big stimulus bill. The way to get the country out of recession — and most people think we’re in one — is to get the country out of Iraq, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll.
[J]ust 19 percent of the people surveyed said they planned to go out and spend the money [from the rebate checks in the economic stimulus package]; 45 percent said they’d use it to pay bills. And nearly half said what the government really should do is get out of Iraq.
Forty-eight percent said a pullout would help fix the country’s economic problems “a great deal,” and an additional 20 percent said it would help at least somewhat. Some 43 percent said increasing government spending on health care, education and housing programs would help a great deal; 36 percent said cutting taxes.

We should not have attacked Afghanistan in the first place. There was reason to believe that OBL was behind the 9/11 attack. So, he should have been arrested. Progressives need to stop supporting the notion that the attack on Afghanistan was justified.

Dems are in a class war, not race or gender
David Sirota noted today how weird it is that working class folks are identifying with Clinton and Obama is attracting the upper tier when conventional wisdom says the opposite.
For all the hype about generational and gender wars in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, we have a class war on our hands. And incredibly, corporate America's preferred candidate is winning the poorer "us" versus the wealthier "them" — a potentially decisive trend with the contest now moving to working-class bastions like Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The Taliban - What was it they said? Go to hell?
----------------------------
Prelude to invasion
Taliban press conference in Pakistan after the September 11th attacks, declaring they will not extradite Osama bin Laden without evidenceAfter the September 11 attacks and the PENTTBOM investigation, the USA delivered this ultimatum to the Taliban:
Deliver to the US all of the leaders of Al Qaeda;
Release all imprisoned foreign nationals;
Close immediately every terrorist training camp;
Hand over every terrorist and their supporters to appropriate authorities;
Give the United States full access to terrorist training camps for inspection.[109]
On September 21, 2001, the Taliban responded that if the United States could bring evidence that bin Laden was guilty they would hand him over, stating there was no evidence in their possession linking him to the September 11 attacks.[92]

People like Zinn and Chomsky were "sell[ing] this opinion" from the beginning. I will not stop arguing for it. And my hunch is that many people are of "the opinion".
Half of U.K. men would swap sex for 50-inch TV
Survey found that only a third of women would make the same trade

LONDON - Nearly half of British men surveyed would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, a survey — perhaps unsurprisingly carried out for a firm selling televisions — said on Friday.
Electrical retailer Comet surveyed 2,000 Britons, asking them what they would give up for a large television, one of the latest consumer “must-haves.”
The firm found 47 percent of men would give up sex for half a year, compared to just over a third of women.
“It seems that size really does matter more for men than women,” the firm said.
A quarter of people said they would give up smoking, with roughly the same proportion willing to give up chocolate
The Passion of ‘Anonymous’
A shadowy, loose-knit consortium of activists and hackers called 'Anonymous' is just the latest thorn in Scientology's side.
These are unfriendly times to be a Scientologist. In December, Germany's Interior Ministry moved to ban the organization, which has tax-exempt religious status in the United States. In January, St. Martin's Press published Andrew Morton's salacious unauthorized biography of Tom Cruise, which describes the star as its de facto second in command. The church responded with a 15-page statement, calling the book "a bigoted, defamatory assault replete with lies" and saying Cruise "is a Scientology parishioner and holds no official or unofficial position in the Church hierarchy." Jenna Hill Miscavige, a niece of church leader David Miscavige who left the fold in 2005, this week came out in support of Morton and slammed the organization for, among other things, its practice of "disconnection--essentially severing contact with family members seen as hostile to the group.
Now, a loose-knit consortium of hackers and activists calling itself "Anonymous" has declared "war" on the organization. In a creepy YouTube clip addressed to the "leaders of Scientology," a robotic voice announces "with the leakage of your latest propaganda video into mainstream circulation, the extent of your malign influence over those who trust you as leaders has been made clear to us. Anonymous has therefore decided that your organization should be destroyed." (The clip has been viewed more than 2 million times since it was posted Jan. 21.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCbKv9yiLiQ
Hello, Scientology.
We are Anonymous.
Over the years, we have been watching you. Your campaigns of misinformation; suppression of dissent; your litigious nature, all of these things have caught our eye. With the leakage of your latest propaganda video into mainstream circulation, the extent of your malign influence over those who trust you, who call you leader, has been made clear to us. Anonymous has therefore decided that your organization should be destroyed. For the good of your followers, for the good of mankind--for the laughs--we shall expel you from the Internet and systematically dismantle the Church of Scientology in its present form. We acknowledge you as a serious opponent, and we are prepared for a long, long campaign. You will not prevail forever against the angry masses of the body politic. Your methods, hypocrisy, and the artlessness of your organization have sounded its death knell.
You cannot hide; we are everywhere.
We cannot die; we are forever. We're getting bigger every day--and solely by the force of our ideas, malicious and hostile as they often are. If you want another name for your opponent, then call us Legion, for we are many.
Yet for all that we are not as monstrous as you are; still our methods are a parallel to your own. Doubtless you will use the Anon's actions as an example of the persecution you have so long warned your followers would come; this is acceptable. In fact, it is encouraged. We are your SPs.
Gradually as we merge our pulse with that of your "Church", the suppression of your followers will become increasingly difficult to maintain. Believers will wake, and see that salvation has no price. They will know that the stress, the frustration that they feel is not something that may be blamed upon Anonymous. No--they will see that it stems from a source far closer to each. Yes, we are SPs. But the sum of suppression we could ever muster is eclipsed by that of the RTC.
Knowledge is free.
We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
WE DO NOT FORGET.

Howard Dean to the rescue?
By: Steve Benen @ 5:15 PM - PST Following up on reports hinting at the likelihood of a brokered Democratic convention in August, it’s worth keeping in mind that DNC Chairman Howard Dean apparently has some kind of plan to intervene.
The narrow margin in delegates, and the growing likelihood that it will remain close, prompted concern on Wednesday from the chairman of the Democratic Party, Howard Dean, who said Tuesday night that Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton should avoid taking the nominating fight all the way to the party convention in August.
“I think we will have a nominee sometime in the middle of March or April,” Mr. Dean said Wednesday on the NY1 cable news channel, “but if we don’t, then we’re going to have to get the candidates together and make some kind of an arrangement. Because I don’t think we can afford to have a brokered convention; that would not be good news for either party.”
That sounds great, but realistically, Howard Dean has very limited options here.

Bill Clinton's friend George H.W. Bush is a Clinton deficit...
Been at the old thread alone so dragging this stuff over--
Been reading the history of the Bush family. They're investment shell game specialists pure and simple, they backed the Nazis, and escaping real prosecution then, went on to permeate key government institutions. And now the family mental deficit (G.W.Bush) usurped the presidency twice with the aid of his brother Jeb, his dad's pals, his Christianist/Dominionist base (the source of both his election fraud and private police/army) and it is like Caligula all over again.
People are afraid of this junta. And that includes those in Congress.
What we need is a Magnificent Seven to drive the Bush Gang out. But who would be so crazy-brave?
REAGAN WORSHIP EXPLANATION:
Dick Cheney did not invent the Vice Presidential Shadow Government. He merely is following in the footsteps of George H.W. Bush who acted under the radar when he was Ronald Reagan's vice president. Reagan was losing it due to Alzheimers dementia, and Vice President George H.W. Bush just kept consolidating power in the shadows.
I think hiding the fact of George H.W. Bush's real power between 1980 and 1988 is the real reason the Reagan Legend must bloat and bloat and bloat till it is out of all proportion to anything resembling reality: The more bloated the Reagan Legacy, the harder it is to look past it to The Truth about George Herbert Walker Bush.
Bill Clinton closed the investigations of Iran-Contra/H.W.Bush and I don't remember much of anything being done about Bush's Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney giving the order to attack a retreating army and burning them to a crisp in the desert at the end of Gulf War I. So, will Hillary Clinton as president mean 8 MORE YEARS of not facing these past Bush crimes, let alone touch Bush 43's crimes?

Reagan was a friendly face for Geo.H.W. Bush to hide behind...
When Geo.H.W. Bush went to see Ronald Reagan after Reagan was shot by Hinckley, I think Bush Senior realized Reagan was mentally out-of-it because he was like a forgiving child about the whole thing, something conscious and adult was missing from the poor senile Reagan. I think that was when Geo.H.W. Bush realized Reagan was worth more as camouflage than as a dead stepping stone to the Presidency.

The Taliban - What was it they said? Go to hell?

You are echoing, one could say, the commentary of Timothy McVea who was apprehended via police work and tried, convicted and executed, unlike Osama bin Laden.
I do not expect for your militaristic viewpoint, which is your solution to every international insult (current failures notwithstanding), to ascribe to the notion that murdering three, or thirty, or three-hundred, or three-thousand people is a crime known internationally as "murder".
It is apparent that there is a line drawn in your mind between one total number of dead and another, greater, number of dead killed by a murderer. When that line has been crossed (according to you), declare war.
Guess what? Your methodology has not been successful and it is realizing deteriorating (and already deteriorated) results as well as unintended negative consequences.
To claim that an international police effort would have had worse results is a wild shot in the dark, not unlike the wild shot in the dark that military action was and is.
Reagan was a liberal
until he went to work for the ultra anti-New Deal G.E. And we know the rest of the story. I would argue that he became a true believer. Anyone read Toland's bio of Adolf Hitler? In it, he shows that prior to WWl, Hitler was fairly progressive politically. Embittered by his war experience, he bought into the propaganda of the ultra nationalists and after the war, he discovered he had a talent for spewing anti-semitic bile. The movie "Max" somewhat covers this episode.

Reagan politicked for the Dems in the 1940s---
Man, he was OLD in 1980 when he got elected thanks to the October Surprise. That's why his senility should have been expected!
What an oldtimer sees in this primary...
(As I was stuck at first thread alone, I've dragged this over too----)
An old-timer tells me the analysis of this primary is being dominated by people too young [and idealistic?] to identify what they are seeing.
He tells me that the states where Obama is creating his "magic" -- red states like Kansas -- will NEVER vote for a Democratic president.
He also says the caucus states are going for Obama -- an emotional primary style responding to an inspirational speech style --and that the caucus method represent too small a sample of state voters and too emotional a method of choosing to replicate in a general election; he says the open designation voting also throws off the sincerity quotient [?]. He maintains that when voters are alone with a ballot in the privacy of the voting booth, the emotional zeal and pressure experienced in a caucus will be gone and they will revert to their historic voting preference.
So, my question is, do the DNC guys consider Obama's win manufactured in the Rovian realm capable of dreaming up ways to give the Dem Party a mind wedgy by screwing up a smooth primary?

In 1947, as SAG president, Reagan testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee regarding the influence of communists in the motion picture industry. Strongly opposed to communism, he reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles, stating, "As a citizen, I would hesitate to see any political party outlawed on the basis of its political ideology. However, if it is proven that an organization is an agent of foreign power, or in any way not a legitimate political party —and I think the government is capable of proving that—then that is another matter... But at the same time I never as a citizen want to see our country become urged, by either fear or resentment of this group, that we ever compromise with any of our democratic principles through that fear or resentment."Lipstick Lesbian

A Quote
By the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, public opinion polls showed that over 80 percent of the American public was opposed to entering another European war. It took the dramatic event of the attack on Pearl Harbor to shift public opinion overwhelmingly to suppor our entry into the war. The public was unaware of the evidence that we now have that Roosevelt provoked the attack on Pearl Harbor and actually withheld information from the military commanders stationed there, which if furnished to them, would have probably prevented the attack.

Louisville Courier-Journal editorial:
Obstructionist
Sen. Mitch McConnell did precisely what we said he was doing. He blocked the Senate Democrats' economic stimulus bill, which would have included not only payments to more than 20 million Americans on Social Security and more than 250,000 disabled veterans but help for others in need.
As a result of Sen. McConnell's tactics, the federal effort to stimulate the lagging economy will provide less help. The failure to extend unemployment insurance will affect 11,458 Kentuckians. And Kentucky loses $50.24 million in energy assistance for the needy.

Bush administration strategy in Anbar imploding

Ilan Goldenberg tells us that the "Anbar Awakening" forces, essentially the Sunni groups we gave money and weapons to so they'd drive out the minor (if oft-cited) al Qaeda elements in Anbar, are close to open conflict with the major elected Sunni parties. I know, it's hard to believe that giving a large group of people a bunch of money and weapons might make them think about using it to gain political power (and not just do whatever we tell them), but it's true:
It looks like tensions have reached a new level between the Sunni Green Zone politicians and the "Awakening" movement. What's scary here is that the level of distrust and hatred in intra-Sunni politics probably doesn't even come close to what you have to deal with in terms of getting the Awakening Groups and Concerned Local Citizens integrated into national Shi'a dominated institutions. And trying to change the leadership by holding elections may only make the situation worse. On top of that, if violence between the Green Zone politicians and the Awakening Councils breaks out in Anbar we're in for a whole new set of problems and "bottom up reconciliation" could very well go up in smoke.
The Bush administration strategy in Iraq continues to make things worse, not better. Day by day, worse and worse.
I was going to close this post by linking to a report of the latest US deaths in Iraq, but CNN doesn't have that information on its front page . . . or it's "World" page . . . or the front page of its "Middle East" section. Fitting, I guess.

Regarding comments made by David Shuster to the effect that Chelsea Clinton was being "pimped out" by the campaign -- it may surprise everyone but I actually wasn't bothered by it. The word is ubiquitous, I use it all the time and although it is a loaded term my initial impression was that in the wake of all the truly awful sexist stuff that's come down the pipeline from MSNBC over the course of this campaign, much of which I have personally railed about, this just didn't fall into that category.

Why do I feel leaving the Taliban to protect, shelter, and nurture Al Qaeda would be a bad idea?
But nothing I like better the a real-world test of an idea. Senator Obama might just provide that test if he becomes President Obama. If he is as good as his word, he plans to call on Iran and just ask them to stop terrorism and ask them if they would kindly not build a nuclear weapon, thank you very much.
I see no reason they would agree, but then that's the test, isn't it?
Now the down side is that if Iran builds a nuke and uses it for terrorism we might all just be dead. But one must give the 2 Year Senator time to learn from his mistakes.

Pakistan is authorized to arrest Bin Laden at any time. How is that working out?
We are using just the strategy you would like us to employ.
Night all
Long day at work tomorrow.
Like Shooting Dead Fish In A Barrel
POTDog: "We should have taken care of it ourselves."
POTDog (again): "Pakistan is authorized to arrest Bin Laden at any time. How is that working out?"

You cite two failures of your preferred foreign policy as evidence that my preferred foreign policy would have been a failure?
You couldn't debate your way out of a grade school lunchroom to save your milk money.
you ain't gonna find the command and control center anywhere.
not without "collateral losses".
We call them innocent civilians. Even America is against America.
George Bush hates America. He made America hated.
You cite two failures of your preferred foreign policy
Nice try...
We let the Afghans have a shot..
We let Pakistan have a shot..
Just who is it you want to arrest Bin Laden?
Scary.
Obam,a Security Lax

Just what Bush needs to declare martial law
O'bama's security is so horrible, that it looks to be intentional.
I saw footage last night that just blew me away. O'bama was walking across a concrete lot, in the near background were several multi-stored buildings as near as 100 yards away. There were no security agents within 10 feet of (the principle), most were 20 to 30 feet away, I don't believe any were as tall as he is, and I did not see an agent of color either.
There have been many threats already and he looks to be on a standard 'packet'. With threats already made, he should be on 'special packet' that should include at least 8 agents as tall or taller. 4 each for both a front and rear fan design. He should never have been taken across that parking lot in the complete open under any circumstances. Your average deer hunter can be deadly accurate at those distances.
In the handshake crowd, there should be an additional 2 tall agents directly in front about 4 foot back from the line. Standard protection in the line should be as it is but to include the taller agents both in front and behind the principle.
The footage I saw was just unbelieveable. This nation has a sordid history of gunning down progressive leadership. In a time of economic hardship, there are internal pressures that build in those who see their economic world crashing down, nothing left to loose, throw in some racism and that creates extreme danger for O'bama.
I bring this up fo 2 reasons, not only does he need 'special packet' protection to keep him secure, but his killing and the explosion in the city streets would be the prime trigger point for just what bush and cheney really want, martial law and the delay or cancellation of the election. This would work perfectly for them and their 'unfinished agenda'.
This lack of protection needs public posting, this site is monitored and that is a good start, once this security lapse is posted, there can not be any denial that this was not 'foreseen'.
Nice try...
moniker of the defenseless.
can you spell abdication of responsibility?
Mixed signals – Pakistan after Bhutto
Islamabad – The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi on December 27 brought home the gravity of Pakistan’s crisis. That she was its latest martyr added a terrible poignancy, and not just because she was the third of her family to have been politically murdered.
For her followers Bhutto offered the hope of deliverance from her nation’s woes of military rule, religious bigotry and pauperization. On return to Pakistan on October 18 – met with the slaughter of 137 people by dual suicide attacks – she said “education, employment and empowerment” were the arms to defeat Pakistan’s evil axis of military dictatorship and Islamic militancy.
To the Bush administration and Britain she was a savior of a different kind. They had engineered her return to deliver President Pervez’s Musharraf’s military regime the civilian legitimacy it so palpably lacked. In the caustic description of Pakistan historian Ahmed Rashid a “loveless marriage” had been arranged so that “the General can combat terrorists and the Lady play democracy”.
Washington also assumed Bhutto would endorse augmented US military operations in Pakistan, especially on the border areas with Afghanistan where the Taliban and, says US intelligence, al Qaeda are entrenched.
Which will be her legacy? The American surrogate who, in return for office, was prepared to rent Pakistan as a forward NATO base for the war in Afghanistan. Or the martyr who was killed because she alone could mobilize the nation’s poor against the military’s stranglehold on the state.

The Team In The Cellar

We let the Afghans have a shot..
We let Pakistan have a shot..

"We" did not "let" anyone do anything.
You voted for Cheney and Bush. Twice.
They usurped Executive power that did not exist heretofore and used it to expose their incompetence.
As a result, Osama bin Laden is making videos while Americans and Iraqis are attending funerals, Afghans are growing poppies for the Taliban, and Pakistan is pretending to be a U.S. ally, laughing all the way to the bank.
It is your team and your plan, POTDog. It ain't mine. You own your outcomes.
ole' one eye
Taleban leader Mullah Omar and al-Qaeda commanders, including Osama Bin Laden, are living in Pakistan, a senior US official has told reporters.
He said senior Taleban leaders were in hiding with Mullah Omar in Quetta, from where they co-ordinated the insurgency in Afghanistan.
He also reiterated Washington's belief that Bin Laden was taking refuge in Pakistan's western tribal areas.
Islamabad repeatedly denies that Mullah Omar or Bin Laden are in Pakistan.
The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity in Washington, told reporters:
"There is no question that the iconic leaders of al-Qaeda - (Ayman al-)Zawahiri, Bin Laden... are in the tribal areas of Pakistan.
"We believe that the Taleban's shura (consultation) council leaders led by Mullah Omar reside in Quetta in Pakistan," he said.
Captured evidence
The official, who did not give a source for his information, said al-Qaeda was doing its planning in the tribal areas "just as Mullah Omar is giving strategic direction for the Taleban from Quetta".
Quetta is the capital of rugged Balochistan province which borders Afghanistan.
Last month, captured Taleban spokesman Muhammad Hanif made similar claims about Mullah Omar's whereabouts, which were rejected by Pakistan.
Mr Hanif said Mullah Omar was protected by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai made similar allegations last year. The ISI was instrumental in backing the Taleban after civil war swept Afghanistan following the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989.
