Take Action to Stop the Foreclosures --Action--
Many working families are finding themselves in trouble with debt—often as a result of predatory lenders. We have a chance to stop these unethical lenders from targeting people who simply can't afford to pay the money back and risk losing their homes.
On behalf of Working America and AFL-CIO members, we're asking the top mortgage lenders to commit to the following practices:
An immediate moratorium on foreclosures associated with all subprime mortgages for the next year;
Conversion of all outstanding subprime loans into conventional 30-year mortgages at fair rates;
Renounce servicing agreements that reward foreclosure and instead encourage refinancing or other workout strategies; and
Commit to publicly reporting on how many subprime loans these lenders are servicing. How many they have reset, how many have been restructured and how many foreclosures are occurring and where.
Please sign this petition calling on mortgage lenders to take the necessary steps to save thousands of working people from crushing personal debt.
Thank you for your action today.

Market Weirdness
Submitted by toniD on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 10:49am.
If you're wondering why the market is tanking again, this is it.
Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. service industries unexpectedly shrank in January at the fastest pace since the last recession as the housing slump deepened and consumer spending cooled.
The Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing index, which reflects almost 90 percent of the economy, fell to 41.9, the lowest since October 2001, from 54.4 the prior month, the Tempe, Arizona-based ISM said. A reading of 50 is the dividing line between growth and contraction.
--------------
toniD, dan and others,
The spread between the previous and the current numbers is said to be inexplicably wide. There is some suspicion that the current number might be adjusted in the future.
I don't know one way or the other. I find it interesting because 1.) If the numbers are accurate, they have shocked the experts and 2.) If the numbers are to be corrected by narrowing the spread in the future, bad data caused a lot of trouble.

The possibilities include snow, ice, rain, hail, severe winds, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and warm sunshine depending upon location and the whims of the westerly cold front versus the southerly warm and wet Gulf winds.
I am in a meteorological sweet spot for the moment. My house is open, the sun is shining and the temperature is nearly 70F. Yesterday the temperature was 76F which beat the previous record of 75F set over 100 years ago (1886, I think?).

I listened to a bit of Washington Journal on C-Span - most were those folks who were in their recliner chair with a bean bag ashtray finishing off a pot of percolated - all Repubs who said they'd stay home if McCain wins the Nomination-everyone who called fit the Zogby demographic profile in terms of their choice.
Will vote for McCain if Sam thinks he's easier to beat
McCain is never easy to beat.
Re: caucuses and superdelegates
Yeah, I'm not a fan of caucuses. They seem to keep voter involvement waaay low, and the whole lack of secrecy is a problem for me, as well.
I'd like to see the Democratic Party (1) do away with caucuses; (2) shift to Instant Runoff Voting across all primaries; (3) decrease or eliminate the 15% delegate-allocation threshold.
I'd think it would be worthwhile to decrease the delegate-allocation threshold down to 5% or less in the early primaries, to allow lesser known candidates to accumulate delegates; and then increase as the weeks go by, eventually getting back up to a 10% or 15% threshold.

Re: "Clinton will win today"
Most certainly. But that wasn't ever really in question. Obama's goal is merely to make the margins narrow enough to remain close in the delegate count, to allow him to get back to retail politics.

In my political region it is possible to choose a ballot by party (in this primary the choices are Democratic, Libertarian or Republican).
I would add to your wish list: I would prefer one ballot with everyone on it. (It is moot in the primary in my area because only one political race is on today's ballot.)
However, in the midterm election there were lots of races being run. One ballot offering the ability to vote for any candidate of any party would help to put the kibosh to the stranglehold of the (major) two party system.
Has either candidate addressed the issue of contractors

Black Keys,Yes Err Ree !
Sounds Good,Marc !
Is your Sammy Cam need to be refreshed every min. too ?
"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."
Crank... I don't like the open primary system.
(though can always be convinced otherwise)
For party nominations, the choice should be made by party members -- and maybe independents. I'm not sure Reps should be allowed to vote in Dem primaries, and vice versa.
To end the two-party system, Instant Runoff Voting will go a long way, as it would allow you to vote your conscience (i.e. third-party) without enabling your least favorite candidate (i.e. spoiling).
I highly recommend getting involved in pervasive implementation of IRV.
McCain is never easy to beat.

During the show MoveOn called to nag me into voting Obama-I told them I had an article to finish- George Packer in NEW YORKER & a discussion to listen to -then I'd go vote. It was the same conversation. I said Obama because he would refresh the electorate, she said kids like him. But Clinton held hearings on environmental justice, while Obama doesn't do hearings, I said. And what about COAL? Then I remembered Zogby said that NM looked to go Clinton because of Latino support - will it make a difference?
Crank... Re: "now we're both dreaming"... chuckle.
yeah, it may be. I'd love to see the Dem. president promote such a thing, though. It may seem a risk to Democratic power, but doing so would engender much gratitude.

i could i was also in the middle of a cooking adventure, i always try hard on carnival day (mardi gras) to do some traditional italian cooking for the occasion - in this case some type of rice fritters from the Tuscany region - i must say it wasn't the greatest success, the things came out ok, though not as good as i remember them to be while i savored them in italy watching the parades on the beach there - oh well, and the blender which i used to whip up the eggwhites started spewing some black ash and dust - chemical burnt rubber smell in the kitchen - decided to turn it off and throw the whole appliance in the garbage to avoid explosions or further harm - have no idea what the fuck happened and not too inclined to find out - just a cheap black and decker blender - prolly made in china - whatever
