McCain makes brains explode!

Absolutely the only good thing about McCain's "surge in the polls",
as every cable news-head insists on calling it, is that it makes
conservative talkshow hosts smokin' mad. Which is kind of funny to
watch. It has been widely reported that Rush Limbaugh has said that if
McCain is the Republican nominee, it will be the end of the Republican
party. And Ann Coulter got herself back on the tube today by saying
that she would actually campaign for Hillary if McCain got the nod.

Alex Koppelman over at War Room has a comprehensive run-down
of all of the nutjobs' reactions to McCain. My favorite part is
definitely Michelle Malkin freaking out over Schwarzenegger's
endorsement: "He extolled McCain for 'reach[ing] across the political
aisle to get things done'....To which I say: When did it become the
Republican Party's top priority to 'get things done?'....'Get things
done' is mindless liberal code for passing legislation and expanding
government."

Heaven forbid! McCain's ability (or lackthereof) to compromise aside, what a ridiculous criticism to make of ANYone.
Look out, Michelle, it's a vast left-wing conspiracy to make law-makers
make laws!

Just as a reality check here, the latest Gallup poll
has McCain leading Romney and all the rest of the GOPs by at least 15 points, and
climbing. So...let the hysteria continue. I, for one, still wish that
our Dem in November could run against Tancredo or some other cuckoo
bird, but at least McCain is making things entertaining.

Disowned by the Ownership Society

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/02/01/6778/

Remember the “ownership society,” fixture of major George W. Bush addresses for the first four years of his presidency? “We’re creating…an ownership society in this country, where more Americans than ever will be able to open up their door where they live and say, welcome to my house, welcome to my piece of property,” Bush said in October 2004. Washington think-tanker Grover Norquist predicted that the ownership society would be Bush’s greatest legacy, remembered “long after people can no longer pronounce or spell Fallujah.” Yet in Bush’s final State of the Union address, the once-ubiquitous phrase was conspicuously absent. And little wonder: rather than its proud father, Bush has turned out to be the ownership society’s undertaker.

Global Warming Denier Group

Global Warming Denier Group Funded By Big Oil Hosting Climate Change Denial Conference
From March 2-4, right-wing climate-denier group The Heartland Institute will host what it calls a ‘Climate Skeptics’ Conference. Heartland President Joseph Blast boasted that his conference would feature climate change deniers: “This is their chance to speak out.” The online poster for the conference declares, “Global Warming is not a crisis!”

Heartland’s environmental stance is completely out of the mainstream. The debate over human contribution to global warming is long over. Even as all three top GOP presidential candidates recently endorsed California’s effort to reduce auto greenhouse gas emissions, Heartland ridiculed the idea, calling California and its allies “environmental extremists.”

Heartland’s extreme anti-environmentalism no doubt spawns from its supporters. Between 1998 and 2005, oil giant ExxonMobil gave nearly $800,000 to Heartland. The group’s Board of Directors also explains the group’s climate change denials:

– Thomas Walton is the Director of Economic Policy at General Motors.

–James L. Johnston is a former senior economist for oil company Amoco Corporation.

–Walter F. Buchholtz is a former member of Heartland’s board of directors and worked as ExxonMobil’s Senior Issues Advisor.

–James M. Taylor is editor of Heartland’s weekly Environment & Climate News and wrote an op-ed criticizing Gore’s “Assault On Reason” insisting that “global warming threats they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.”

RealClimate quips, “Normal scientific conferences have the goal of discussing ideas and data in order to advance scientific understanding. Not this one.”

Wisconsin Senate Votes to

Wisconsin Senate Votes to Reimburse Prosecuted Aide
By Paul Kiel - February 1, 2008, 4:21PM
Continued fallout from the U.S. attorneys scandal. From The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

The state Senate on Thursday unanimously approved the payment of legal fees for Georgia Thompson, a state employee whose conviction for mishandling a contract was overturned by a federal appeals court....

Senators voted 32-0 to pay $228,793 for Thompson's legal fees; the bill now goes to the Assembly, where it is expected to pass. There was no debate on the bill, but Sen. Judy Robson (D-Beloit) said it was the "least we can do" for Thompson, who served time in a federal prison before the appeals judges ordered her released.

Of course, the appeals court's decision to immediately overturn the case was remarkable in itself. But here you have a state legislature working to redress the wrongs of a federal prosecutor. Has this ever happened before? It strikes me as a rather unique situation.

And remember that efforts by Congress to investigate the Justice Department's handling of the case -- in addition to other possible cases of selective prosecution -- have been firmly rebuffed (with the exception of the disclosure of one telling email).

My Thoughts (Not Set In Stone) On Universal Health Care

[This is a repeated post because Lauren provided the blog with a stitch in time for nine new threads.]

Submitted by Catharine on Fri, 02/01/2008 - 6:33pm.
...His "plan" is to negotiate with the healthcare companies...
----------
If the private sector is to be recruited into Universal Health Care, it would be the insurance industry (in my worthless opinion), not the health care industry. The health care industry is downstream of the insurance industry (and more disparate than the insurance industry), so it be beholden to them what be holdin' the purse strings.

I believe that recruiting the private sector, whether the insurance or health care industries, is a bad idea. Universal Health Care is a socialist effort that should be (at first, at the least) undertaken and structured and funded and regulated by government. Probably in time, the private sector will be banging on government's door for a piece of the action despite the stiff regulation.

That said (and in the real world), I expect that the whole health care thing will be terribly screwed up by the time it sees daylight.

The only way to control runaway costs in health care is to regulate the shit out of it. Hardcore Capitalists will scream, "You are stifling medical research and innovation that results from a free marketplace!"

To a degree this is true. Unlimited remittances fund research and innovation. Unlimited costs also limit the recipients (the beneficiaries) of research and innovation. The cutting edge is available only to the deepest pockets. Universal Health Care won't change this fact for the rich who are willing to pay more even though it might reduce the pace of research and innovation. Greater rewards warrant bigger risks. Get over it. I could argue that the rewards are not now as great as they could be, so let's increase the cost of health care.

Cable and satellite dish television service providers charge a gross fee of (roughly) $50 per month. The beauty of this scheduled type of Capitalism is that subscribers remit $50 per month over and over and over again in a steady stream. From the $50, the company pays its costs and pockets a profit. The profit percentage of the $50 increases with the increase in total subscribers.

Universal Health Care should be no different (assuming that the insurance industry is to be included in the cash stream regulated by the government). Even if the net profit, after costs, for insuring 300 million people is only one dollar per citizen per month, it is still a sizable profit. Due to government regulation there would be no giant growth potential for the insurers BUT I refuse to believe that every potential insurer would walk away from a net profit stream of 300 million dollars per month.

It may not be the Wall Street Big Time, but it isn't an offer that would sit on the table for long.

Blackwell, a Cincinnati Republican, has been asked to testify Friday in Washington by the House Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.

The topic: "Voter Suppression," according to a letter sent to Blackwell, who now works for the Family Research Council, Buckeye Institute and other conservative policy groups.

Blackwell said in an e-mailed statement that he received the invitation. "However, my schedule will not permit me to attend the hearings."

Olbermann: Bush push for telco immunity 'textbook example of fascism'.

David Edwards and Nick Juliano
Published: Friday February 1, 2008

In a blistering condemnation of President Bush's willingness to go to the wall for corporations he relies on to spy on Americans, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann says the president's message in his State of the Union address calling for immunity of telecommunications companies is a "textbook example of fascism."

Bush and Congressional Democrats are in a pitched fight over whether to free telecoms from legal liability as part of an overhaul of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The president says the companies should be rewarded for their cooperation in the war on terror; critics say legal immunity would preclude any oversight of Bush's warrantless wiretapping program that ensnared US citizens.

Don’t feed the Trolls
By: John Amato @ 6:15 PM - PST With the primaries upon us—there is no shortage of trolls.

Atrios:

I cannot make anyone stop responding to pointless or nuisance comments. You have to want to restrain yourself, because you understand that the only way to get rid of them is to fail to give them the attention they want. A “troll” is not just someone whose comments you disagree with, or even just a nasty or badly-worded comment. A troll is someone who does not, under any possible set of circumstances, care what you think about him or his comments.

He merely wants attention. Negative attention will do. The more you disagree with him, the more he is able to tell himself that he is persecuted and victimized or the only voice of reason or one of the elite few who has the God’s-eye view of the world or whatever his current delusion is…and there’s more.

Why I'm Backing Obama

By Susan Eisenhower
Saturday, February 2, 2008; Page A15

Forty-seven years ago, my grandfather Dwight D. Eisenhower bid farewell to a nation he had served for more than five decades. In his televised address, Ike famously coined the term "military-industrial complex," and he offered advice that is still relevant today. "As we peer into society's future," he said, we "must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow."

Today we are engaged in a debate about these very issues. Deep in America's heart, I believe, is the nagging fear that our best years as a nation may be over. We are disliked overseas and feel insecure at home. We watch as our federal budget hemorrhages red ink and our civil liberties are eroded. Crises in energy, health care and education threaten our way of life and our ability to compete internationally. There are also the issues of a costly, unpopular war; a long-neglected infrastructure; and an aging and increasingly needy population.

I am not alone in worrying that my generation will fail to do what my grandfather's did so well: Leave America a better, stronger place than the one it found.

Given the magnitude of these issues and the cost of addressing them, our next president must be able to bring about a sense of national unity and change. As we no longer have the financial resources to address all these problems comprehensively and simultaneously, setting priorities will be essential. With hard work, much can be done.

The biggest barrier to rolling up our sleeves and preparing for a better future is our own apathy, fear or immobility. We have been living in a zero-sum political environment where all heads have been lowered to avert being lopped off by angry, noisy extremists. I am convinced that Barack Obama is the one presidential candidate today who can encourage ordinary Americans to stand straight again; he is a man who can salve our national wounds and both inspire and pursue genuine bipartisan cooperation. Just as important, Obama can assure the world and Americans that this great nation's impulses are still free, open, fair and broad-minded.

Interesting figures....

Since coming to Washington, John McCain has voted anti-choice 125 times out of 130 votes cast on abortion and other reproductive-rights issues. He even boasts about it! “I have many, many votes and it’s been consistent. And I’ve gotten a consistent zero from NARAL throughout all those years.”

As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney vetoed legislation to improve women’s access to emergency contraception. Fortunately, the Massachusetts legislature voted to override Romney’s veto. And when asked if the repeal of Roe v. Wade would be a good day for America, Romney replied, “Absolutely.”

Mike Huckabee, who has emphatically stated that Roe v. Wade should be overturned, even supports a so-called “human life” amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Versions of this type of amendment could outlaw not only abortion, but birth control, stem-cell research, and in-vitro fertilization, too.

The men lost their lives when their patrol hit an explosive charge in the town located in Salah-Eddin Governorate, Iraqi security source told KUNA here.
