chat room debate

earlier, people in a chat room were asking, if Barack Obama is half black and half white - why do people say he's a black Presidential candidate? wouldn't it be equally true to say he's a white Presidential candidate?

i hadn't thought of that, really. what do you guys think?

Going to be in the 50's tomorrow, warming up as we speak and heavy fog. Humidity is 85%

That means swelling of the joints for me.

Maybe they should say the first mixed race president.

Yes, I agree. He is as much white as he is black. The fact that they automatically call anyone who has the slightest semblance of Afro blood black, gives the impression to any reasonable person that it is like some form of contamination. Why don't they just not mention his color. Ha! Fat chance of that!

Things I didn't know about Obama .....

By what is posted here, he has a pretty good Resume, from wiki --

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama

Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Obama, Sr. (born in Nyanza Province, Kenya, of Luo ethnicity) and Ann Dunham (born in Wichita, Kansas).[9] His parents met while both were attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was enrolled as a foreign student.[10] Obama's parents separated when he was two years old and later divorced.

[11] His father went to Harvard University to pursue Ph.D. studies, then returned to Kenya.[12] His mother married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian foreign student, and the family moved to Jakarta in 1967.[13] Obama attended local schools in Jakarta from ages 6 to 10, where classes were taught in the Indonesian language,[14] which he still speaks passably.[15] He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade until his graduation in 1979.[16] Obama's mother died of ovarian cancer a few months after the publication of his 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father.[17]

In the memoir, Obama describes his experiences growing up in his mother's American middle class family. His knowledge about his African father, who returned once for a brief visit in 1971, came mainly through family stories and photographs.[12] Of his early childhood, Obama writes: "That my father looked nothing like the people around me—that he was black as pitch, my mother white as milk—barely registered in my mind."

[18] The book describes his struggles as a young adult to reconcile social perceptions of his multiracial heritage.[19] He wrote that he used alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine during his teenage years to "push questions of who I was out of my mind".[20]

After high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles, where he studied at Occidental College for two years.[21] He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialization in international relations.[22] Obama received his B.A. degree in 1983, then worked at Business International Corporation and NYPIRG before moving to Chicago to take a job as a community organizer.

[23] As Director of the Developing Communities Project, he worked with low-income residents in Chicago's Roseland community and the Altgeld Gardens public housing development.[24] He entered Harvard Law School in 1988.[25] In 1990, The New York Times reported his election as the Harvard Law Review's "first black president in its 104-year history".[26] He completed his J.D. degree magna cum laude in 1991.

[27] On returning to Chicago, Obama directed a voter registration drive.[27] As an associate attorney with Miner, Barnhill & Galland from 1993 to 1996, he represented community organizers, discrimination claims, and voting rights cases.[28] He was a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1993 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004.[29]

Josh Marshall: My Take

Here's how he saw it .....

-SNIP-

In general, I think Obama's the winner tonight. I think Hillary made her case well. I think Edwards had the best debate. But the debate can only be understood in the context of the moment. Right now, Obama's on fire. The first post-Iowa polls show him picking up a big post-caucus bump. He needed to come off well. Not make any mistakes. And not let Hillary open up any strong line of attack against him. And I think he did each one of those things. Which means he gave some reassurance to those who might be hesitating to get on the bandwagon and didn't do or allow anything to happen which significantly change the trend of the moment, which is moving heavily in his favor.

John Edwards won the debate

John Edwards won the debate tonight on ABC. He kept on point about how on how the corporation have a strangle hold on this country. Who lost Barack Obama. When Charlie Gibson said to him that he has the same views as George Bush on how to deal with intervening with Pakistan he had no answer. He did not keep his composure. I have lost complete credibility with Barack Obama cause he is a card caring member of the CFR.
http://www.cfr.org/bios/11603/barack_obama.html
When Clinton pointed out his record he got flustered. By his record he is a centrist. His record while he was in the state legislature he voted as being present over 160 times. That doesn't show any leadership.
What we need is a leader like John Edwards who by far has shown he can take on the corporate power while he was a Lawyer. He brought out alot of passion in the debate keeping everyone on point about how corporate power needs to be put in check. Even if he doesn't win the primaries he is holding all the other candidates feet to the fire on what need to be changed in this country.

I liked Edwards

framing of terror and calmness.

during the debate he made a funny (as in humorous) remark that
he'd seen more civil exchanges during a hostage negotiation
uhh that was funny? well then later what i really thought was funny was how he again tried to say we need to quit this arguing (ok not his exact words, but again with the similar remark that they weren't playing nice)but this time they weren't arguing or going after each other or anything it was an odd remark that he seems to think will score him points but it didn't, it just made him look ...uh ridiculous
and for the first time I've been able to put my finger on why I don't like Richardson he really is not very articulate, truly.I think one reason the others are kinda nice to him is specifically for that reason he's kinda the doddering old neighbor who isn't very bright but he's a nice neighbor so you put up with him and even defend the old guy when necessary. Not someone I think should or could lead this country and get us out the huge mess created by Bush/Cheney et al.

Special Report: WashPo and Time Help ABC Bury Treatment of Kucinich

* Congressman Kucinich was apparently deliberately cropped out of a "Politics Page" photo of the candidates.

* Sometime Monday afternoon, after Congressman Kucinich took a commanding lead in ABC's own on-line "Who won the Democratic debate" survey, the survey was dropped from prominence on the website.

* ABC News has not officially reported the results of its online survey.

* After the results of that survey showed Congressman Kucinich winning handily, ABC News, sometime Monday afternoon, replaced the original survey with a second survey asking "Who is winning the Democratic debate?"

* During the early voting Monday afternoon and evening, U.S. Senator Barack Obama was in the lead. By sometime late Monday or early Tuesday morning, Congressman Kucinich regained the lead by a wide margin in this second survey.

* Sometime Tuesday morning, ABC News apparently dropped the second survey from prominence or killed it entirely.

* AND, as every viewer of the nationally televised Sunday Presidential forum is aware, Congressman Kucinich was not given an opportunity to answer a question from moderator George Stephanopoulos until 28 minutes into the program.

Hey, Barack

An Appeal to Barack Obama
by Tom Hayden; January 05, 2008

“The Democrats have been stuck in the arguments of Vietnam, which means that either you’re a Scoop Jackson Democrat or you’re a Tom Hayden Democrat and you’re suspicious of any military action. And that’s just not my framework.” – Sen. Barack Obama [1]

Barack, I thought Hillary Clinton was known as the Great Triangulator, but you are learning well. The problem with setting up false polarities to position yourself in the “center”, however, is that it’s unproductive both politically and intellectually.

Politically, it is a mistake because there last time I looked there were a whole lot more “Tom Hayden Democrats” voting in the California primary and, I suspect, around the country, than “‘Scoop’ Jackson Democrats.” In fact, they are your greatest potential base, aside from African-American voters, in a multi-candidate primary.

More disturbing is what happens to the mind by setting up these polarities. To take a “centrist” position, one calculates the equal distance between two “extremes.” It doesn’t matter if one “extreme” is closer to the truth. All that matters is achieving the equidistance. This means the presumably “extreme” view is prevented from having a fair hearing, which would require abandoning the imaginary center. And it invites the “extreme” to become more “extreme” in order to pull the candidate’s thinking in a more progressive direction. The process of substantive thinking is corroded by the priority of political positioning.

I have been enthused by the crowds you draw, by the excitement you instill in my son and daughter-in-law, by the seeds of inspiration you plant in our seven-year old [biracial] kid. I love the alternative American narrative you weave on the stump, one in which once-radical social movements ultimately create a better America step by step. I very much respect your senior advisers like David Axelrod, who figured out a way to elect Harold Washington mayor of Chicago. You are a truly global figure in this age of globalization.

But as the months wear on, I see a problem of the potential being squandered. Hillary Clinton already occupies the political center. John Edwards holds the populist labor/left. And that leaves you with a transcendent vision in search of a constituency.

Your opposition to the Iraq War could have distinguished you, but it became more parsed than pronounced. All the nuance might please the New York Times’Michael Gordon, who helped get us into this madness in the first place, but the slivers of difference appear too narrow for many voters to notice. Clinton’s plan, such as it is, amounts to six more years of thousands of American troops in Iraq [at least]. Your proposal is to remove combat troops by mid-2010, while leaving thousands of advisers trying to train a dysfunctional Iraqi army, and adding that you might re-invade to stave off ethnic genocide. Lately, you have said the mission of your residual American force would be more limited than the Clinton proposal. You would commit trainers, for example, only if the Iraqi government engages in reconciliation and abandons sectarian policing. You would not embed American trainers in the crossfire of combat. This nuancing avoids the tough and obvious question of what to do with the sectarian Frankenstein monster we have funded, armed and trained in the Baghdad Interior Ministry. The Jones Commission recently proposed “scrapping” the Iraqi police service. Do you agree? The Center for American Progress, directed by Bill Clinton’s former chief of staff, is urging that all US troops, including trainers, be redeployed this year. Why do you disagree? Lately you have taken advantage of Hillary Clinton’s hawkishness on Iran to oppose bombing that country without Congressional authorization. But you carefully decline to say whether you would support bombing Iran when and if the time comes. . .

Exclusive: Scary 'NYT' story on faulty voting machines coming on Sunday

Coming between the Iowa and New Hampshire tallies, this Sunday's cover of The New York Times Magazine ought to strike a chord. It shows a man inside an exploding voting booth with a WARNING label over it and the words: "Your vote may be lost, destroyed, miscounted, wrongly attributed or hacked."

The massive Clive Thompson article, titled "The Bugs in the Machines," is quite chilling. "After the 2000 election," it opens, "counties around the country rushed to buy new computerized voting machines. But it turns out that these machines may cause problems worse than hanging chads. Is America ready for another contested election?" One key passage: "The earliest crtiiques of digital voting booths came from the fringe -- disgruntled citizens and scared-senseless computer geeks -- but the fears have now risen to the highest levels of government."

Some of the first modern psychophysiological researchers to examine the conversations between the heart and brain were John and Beatrice Lacey.

The age-old struggle between intellect and emotion will not be resolved by the mind gaining dominance over the emotions, but rather by increasing the harmonious balance between the two systems - a synthesis that provides greater access to our full range of intelligence.

Ralph Nader sues Democratic Party

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

"The Democratic Party is going after anyone who presents a credible challenge to their monopoly over their perceived voters," Nader said in a statement. "This lawsuit was filed to help advance a free and open electoral process for all candidates and voters. Candidate rights and voter rights nourish each other for more voices, choices, and a more open and competitive democracy."

"This is a case designed to make sure other independent and third party candidates will not be subject to the same kind of conspiracy in the future,"

Speaking of Which ! -- Can You Count on Voting Machines?

Hell No ! !

By CLIVE THOMPSON
Published: January 6, 2008

iVotronic touchscreen voting machines in a warehouse in Pittsburgh.

Jane Platten gestured, bleary-eyed, into the secure room filled with voting machines. It was 3 a.m. on Nov. 7, and she had been working for 22 hours straight. “I guess we’ve seen how technology can affect an election,” she said. The electronic voting machines in Cleveland were causing trouble again.

For a while, it had looked as if things would go smoothly for the Board of Elections office in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. About 200,000 voters had trooped out on the first Tuesday in November for the lightly attended local elections, tapping their choices onto the county’s 5,729 touch-screen voting machines. The elections staff had collected electronic copies of the votes on memory cards and taken them to the main office, where dozens of workers inside a secure, glass-encased room fed them into the “GEMS server,” a gleaming silver Dell desktop computer that tallies the votes.

Then at 10 p.m., the server suddenly froze up and stopped counting votes. Cuyahoga County technicians clustered around the computer, debating what to do. A young, business-suited employee from Diebold — the company that makes the voting machines used in Cuyahoga — peered into the screen and pecked at the keyboard. No one could figure out what was wrong. So, like anyone faced with a misbehaving computer, they simply turned it off and on again. Voilà: It started working — until an hour later, when it crashed a second time. Again, they rebooted. By the wee hours, the server mystery still hadn’t been solved.

Worse was yet to come. When the votes were finally tallied the next day, 10 races were so close that they needed to be recounted. But when Platten went to retrieve paper copies of each vote — generated by the Diebold machines as they worked — she discovered that so many printers had jammed that 20 percent of the machines involved in the recounted races lacked paper copies of some of the votes. They weren’t lost, technically speaking; Platten could hit “print” and a machine would generate a replacement copy. But she had no way of proving that these replacements were, indeed, what the voters had voted. She could only hope the machines had worked correctly.

Kucinich on Fifth Anniversary of War Speech

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

Among those supporting the "Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002" were Senators Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Chris Dodd, and Joe Biden, all of whom spoke forcefully in favor of the President's strategy – all four of whom are now Democratic Presidential candidates. All four subsequently approved additional measures for supplemental appropriations to fund the war, as did Democratic Senator Barack Obama after he was elected to the Senate in 2004.

Now, five years after they approved a war that should never have been authorized in the first place, those same Democrats are scrambling to explain, excuse, or defend their votes.

And yet, a great many people today think that the problem is George W. Bush and his gang. And yes, the Bush gang are extreme. But my experience is that they are no more than an extreme version of what has gone on before. In my lifetime, more wars have been started by liberal Democrats than by Republicans. Ignoring this truth is a guarantee that the propaganda system and the war-making system will continue.

Late night hiya, MM..

He would seem like another choice to me, rather than "a drag" because there are people who don't agree with the platform of Democrats or Republicans...

The cost of one day of the Iraq war, they say, could:

create over 95,000 Head Start slots for kids,

buy 6,482 homes for families,

provide healthcare for 423,529 children or 163,525 people,

hire 12,478 elementary school teachers,

outfit 1.27 million homes with renewable electricity,

sponsor almost 35,000 four-year college scholarships or

provide 1.15 million free school lunches.

Agreed. And smart too...

ABC's framing of the debate last night was stifling.

Obama is not raising the fundamental issues

That's my main concern about him. I don't him making definitive stands on issues. I know he's intelligent. I know he'd be 100 X's the President our current loser is, but I don't know what he's going to do unlike Edwards who is not afraid to pick his fights now.

Agreed.

Agreed.

the corporations are running scared

just finished the morning (conservative - but its the only show in town) paper and there were several articles denigrating populism and directly or indirectly edwards and to some extent huckleberry hound. at the same time there were numerous articles praising clinton and romney.

its clear that msm is now ccm - corporate controlled media. how they treated kucinich and paul probably serves three purposes. the first is that it's a dry run for marginalizing candidates they disagree with, the second is that it's intended to desensitize us to it happening, and the third is that is compromises the politicians who don't object.

edwards forgot the precept that sometimes you win bigger when everyone wins. he should have fought to have kucinich on the debate platform. even though kucinichs chances of winning are slim to nothing and slim just left town, kucinich's words aren't going to hurt anything.

Edwards who is not afraid to pick his fights now.

doesn't that more reflect that its do or die time. in the same way, you can see hillary getting feisty because all of a sudden she's being left behind.

watching politics a long time

I was frustrated with bill clinton in '92 for not talking about issues much. Jerry Brown was doing all the issues talk.

What I've come to accept is, there's an art to politics. You have to allow people to project their hopes on to you. Getting into the issues can be a detriment ... people get bogged down in picking apart your solutions. This is just the way it is. Most people vote based on what their hopes are about you. Getting into specifics just tends to dissipate hope rather than enhance it.

I, personally, don't have a problem with Obama. And up until last night I didn't have a problem with Hillary. I'll be happy now if Obama is the front runner. Or Edwards. Either way.

And even if Hillary pulls off some kind of miracle, I will support her. Right now she looks to be burying herself.

Bradley Effect

The term Bradley effect or Wilder effect refers to a phenomenon which has led to inaccurate voter opinion polls in some American political campaigns between a white candidate and a non-white candidate.[1][2][3] Specifically, there have been instances in which statistically significant numbers of white voters tell pollsters in advance of an election that they are either genuinely undecided, or likely to vote for the non-white candidate, but those voters exhibit a different behavior when actually casting their ballots. White voters who said that they were undecided break in statistically large numbers toward the white candidate, and many of the white voters who said that they were likely to vote for the black candidate ultimately cast their ballot for the white candidate. This reluctance to give accurate polling answers has sometimes extended to post-election exit polls as well.
Researchers who have studied the issue theorize that some white voters give inaccurate responses to polling questions because of a fear that they might appear to others to be racially prejudiced. Some research has suggested that the race of the pollster conducting the interview may factor into that concern. At least one prominent researcher has suggested that with regard to pre-election polls, the discrepancy can be traced in part by the polls' failure to account for general conservative political leanings among late-deciding voters.

Jerry Brown

I was frustrated with bill clinton in '92 for not talking about issues much. Jerry Brown was doing all the issues talk.

I heard jerry Brown speak at UW (Seattle) in 1992. Dynamic. Good politics. He said that he would ask Jesse Jackson to be his running mate. Had a lot to say about Clinton's sleaziness, too.

I hope you are right. Of course M$M want him out, as they dread populism. But when I hear progressive analysts say he's done, I worry. Send his campaign some money.

It's hard to see any future for the Edwards campaign, unless as some kind of Hillary surrogate to siphon votes away from Obama in New Hampshire and South Carolina. There's no evidence that economic populism doesn't sell in Iowa. It's simply that this time around Democrats and Independents didn't see Edwards as a persuasive salesman.

Navy Must Cut Sonar Use off California
by Kenneth R. Weiss
A federal judge in Los Angeles on Thursday ordered the toughest set of restrictions ever imposed on the U.S. Navy’s use of mid-frequency sonar off the Southern California coast as part of a protracted court battle to protect whales and other marine mammals from underwater sonic blasts. The order was the first time the judge has spelled out specific rules the Navy must follow to avoid a court-imposed ban on training missions with a type of sonar that has been linked to the death and panicked behavior of whales and dolphins.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper ordered the Navy to refrain from using the powerful submarine-hunting sonar within 12 miles of the coast, a corridor heavily used by migrating gray whales, dolphins and other marine mammals.

No, I don't get paid by Live365

I pay them $107 for 200Mb space and the ability to serve 500 listeners at a time. The other kicker is I'm limited to 500 total listener hours per month. If I go over that I have to either pay extra for each hour listened or up my monthly payment for more listener hours. That's why I keep a close watch on my stats. I want to share, but only if it remains within my budget. I don't want to get into advertising, no way.

I can't understand why it would sound good on some systems and bad on others.

I also don't understand why they "block" stations. None of my regular listeners have complained. Many listen everyday for hours at a time as about the only thing I'm good at is providing decent background music. ;-)

Kucinich backs Obama

“Antiwar” candidate Kucinich backs leading Democrat in Iowa primary

By Jeff Lassahn
3 January 2008

Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich has announced to his supporters in Iowa that if he does not reach the 15 percent threshold of votes needed to proceed to the second round of nominating the party’s presidential candidate, he “strongly encourages” them to vote for Senator Barack Obama. This further underscores the cynical and deceptive nature of Kucinich’s campaign and his supposedly leftist, antiwar stance.
Kucinich’s statement states, “In those caucus locations where my support doesn’t reach the necessary threshold, I strongly encourage all of my supporters to make Barack Obama their second choice. Sen. Obama and I have one thing in common: Change.”
Obama is one of the top-tier Democratic candidates and is thoroughly in line with the militarist strategies of the ruling elite. Just like the Democratic Party as a whole, Obama’s criticisms of the Iraq war are not about ending it, but how to make it succeed. Currently he advocates a partial withdraw from Iraq to re-focus on the “war on terror.” He has called for more troops in Afghanistan, and unilateral US military incursions into Pakistan.
In a Foreign Affairs magazine piece from July 2007, Obama laid out how he intends to preserve US military dominance: “We must use this moment both to rebuild our military and to prepare it for the missions of the future. We must retain the capacity to swiftly defeat any conventional threat to our country and our vital interests. But we must also become better prepared to put boots on the ground in order to take on foes that fight asymmetrical and highly adaptive campaigns on a global scale.” His current campaign includes recommendations to add another 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines to the standing military.
Congressman Kucinich is known as the “antiwar” candidate and has suggested that he would withdraw all troops from Iraq and close military bases there. His willingness to back the openly militarist Obama demonstrates—far more than his pseudo-leftist rhetoric—that he has no intention of challenging the geo-political interests of American imperialism.
Noting that all of the leading Democratic candidates have continued to fund the war, including Obama, Kucinich states, “their judgment was wrong. They have repeatedly said ‘all options’ are on the table with respect to Iran. Intelligence reports revealing that Iran abandoned its nuclear weapons program four years ago again demonstrates that their judgment was wrong.” Thus, Obama funds the criminal enterprise in Iraq and threatens to launch war against Iran but that should not prevent Kucinich’s supporters from voting for the Illinois senator.
With the elections nearly a year away Kucinich is already retracing the steps he took in the 2004 presidential election. Throughout that year Kucinich denounced the war and corporate America and insisted that mass pressure could push the Democratic Party to the left. Then, prior to the Democratic convention, Kucinich and his supporters dropped their opposition to the right-wing Democratic platform and lined up behind pro-war candidate John Kerry, with Kucinich declaring, “The word is unity. That is the operative word.”
With the announcement that Kucinich’s supporters in the Iowa caucus should endorse Obama, the Ohio congressman has made it clear he is again seeking to bolster the Democratic Party, which has been further discredited by its collaboration with the Bush administration since taking over the majority of the US Congress in the 2006 elections.
One year after taking control Congress, none of the promises of the Democrats have been carried through. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, with the Democrats delivering critical support for over $200 billion more in funding. Domestic spying, torture, and other attacks on democratic rights continue unabated. The living standards of ordinary people continue to fall, while the wealthiest continue to enjoy massive tax breaks and record profits and bonuses.
In face of this sordid record, the Kucinich campaign serves to appeal to the broad hostility over the war and inequality, and channel it back into the two-party system. At the announcement of his current presidential run in December of 2006, Kucinich stated, “At this moment, people’s trust in government is on the line. Trust in the Democratic Party is on the line.” He added that there is a “sacred responsibility” to “protect people’s faith in not just our party, but in the political process itself.”
Aside from his slavish insistence of supporting the Democratic Party, the purportedly left-wing program Kucinich offers a mix of the typical reformist proposals and economic nationalism that has proved to be an utter failure in the course of the last century. This is combined with a substantial dose of hypocrisy.
A recent press release claims that Kucinich is the only presidential candidate who has “the ability and the foresight to make the right decisions at the right time. And when you’re talking about life and death decisions, a belated and apologetic ‘I made a mistake’ is not acceptable.” Nowhere is it mentioned that shortly after 9/11 he voted for the “Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists,” which allowed the Bush Administration to begin the war in Afghanistan and roll back democratic rights.
Notably, in all of the “strength through peace” rhetoric on Kucinich’s campaign web site there is no mention of the war in Afghanistan, and the immense social catastrophe it has created. In the United Nations global human development index Afghanistan has fallen to 174 out of 178 countries, with declines in life expectancy, literacy, nutrition, and further decay of social infrastructure. At the same time the brutal counter-insurgency program of the US military continues to shed the blood of innocent Afghans. Presumably, though, the lack of comment on Kucinich’s web site indicates that Afghanistan is still the “good war.”
Kucinich presents himself as a populist, with election claims to rework health care, end poverty and reverse environmental degradation. Yet he steadfastly defends the two-party system, which upholds the capitalist social and economic setup. His campaign web site even has as a topic entitled “Saving Capitalism,” containing nationalist economic positions of regulation and protectionism.

In the Thrall of AIPAC

Why Obama Can't Save Us
By MISSY COMLEY BEATTIE

Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh recently said that Barack Obama is our "only hope" to "lead a reconciliation between the Muslim countries and the US." Why? Because Obama's father was a Muslim.

I simply don't follow Hersh's logic here. Seems to me the actions of a president are more important than some familial affiliation with a particular religion-not to mention that candidate Obama has aligned himself with Israel.

These are some of Obama's comments during a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC):

"Our job is to rebuild the road to real peace and lasting security throughout the region, "Our job is to do more than lay out another road map."

"That effort begins with a clear and strong commitment to the security of Israel: Our strongest ally in the region and its only established democracy. "That will always be my starting point."

And calling for sustained military support to Israel, Obama said: "We must preserve our total commitment to our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense programs."

For Barack Obama to say that "our job is to lay out another road map" for peace while we are providing military support to Israel as the country launches attacks on Palestinians is hypocrisy. There is more than a conflict of interest for the US to go to the table, act as peace brokers, and make demands. But, then, that is what we do as self-appointed police officers to the world. We decry the violence in Kenya. Condi Rice has just made a statement that it must stop. But the violence perpetrated on the Iraqi and Afghan populations by her boss's policies continues without end. Our violence is good violence. Anyone else's is barbaric.

It matters little to me that Barack Obama says he was against invading Iraq. After all, he votes to continue funding it. If this presidential candidate wanted to mend relations with Muslims, he could start by voting against additional war funding.

And he could say no to AIPAC-but this would be political suicide.

Scientists Use Sunlight to Make Fuel From CO2

Wired:
By Chuck Squatriglia

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico have found a way of using sunlight to recycle carbon dioxide and produce fuels like methanol or gasoline.

The Sunlight to Petrol, or S2P, project essentially reverses the combustion process, recovering the building blocks of hydrocarbons. They can then be used to synthesize liquid fuels like methanol or gasoline. Researchers said the technology already works and could help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, although large-scale implementation could be a decade or more away.

"This is about closing the cycle," said Ellen Stechel, manager of Sandia's Fuels and Energy Transitions department. "Right now our fossil fuels are emitting CO2. This would help us manage and reduce our emissions and put us on the path to a carbon-neutral energy system."

Politicians Are Not Representing Our Interests

America's mainstream media and their helpmates have just about accomplished their mission of eliminating every anti-war candidate for this year's presidential election. Meanwhile, after providing an unprecented amount of extremely costly protection to an area of the world which seems to thrive on religious and cultural conflict, I wonder if, during his upcoming tour, Bush will be passing collection plates to help recover some of his administration's fiscally-irresponsible, if not morally-unsound, expenditures?

Printers are a touchy subject...

..depends the volume and type of printing you do. If you're more a document printer, but low volume, get a cheapy inkjet, if you do lot's o' doc's go laser.

If you're an image/pic printer then you'll want to go at least for an intermediate ink jet printer.

Because they change so fast and furious it's hard to recommend a specific one, I've opted to buy a new cheapy HP every year or so. I first look to see which cartridges are most readily available and then go look at the printers.

Only thing I really suggest is to get an All-in-One type so you can scan, print, (and fax if you need it) and only have to deal with one peripheral.

Hope this helps..

Edwards, Obama, Tag Team

When John Edwards stood up for Obama, saying that even though they had differences, they were the only two candidates for change; he had Clinton on her heals. If he would have done that he would have left her explaining herself instead of telling us what she had accomplished. I think it would have been a knock out blow.
